Brickbat: No-Show Job

Victor Vandergriff resigned as a member of the Texas Department of Transportation Commission in February 2018. But he continued to receive a paycheck and state benefits for the part-time job for the next five years. The money stopped coming earlier this year only after the Austin American-Statesman asked why he was still being paid for a job he wasn't doing. Even though he stepped down, Vandergriff was still considered a commissioner because Gov. Greg Abbott never appointed anyone to fill the seat he vacated. Under Texas law, people who resign from a state position are considered to still hold that post until a replacement is named. But experts said that provision was based on the expectation they would continue to serve until a replacement is named.

Sounds like the entire Texas Department of Transportation Commission could easily be shit-canned as unnecessary. Who are the members of the Commission and who are they related to? Is what I would be asking if I were suspicious that the job was simply a political payoff of a do-nothing position for friends, relatives, and campaign donors.

Did someone get a PHd in government waste and abuse analysis? Where are they employed, and what have they done that demonstrates their expertise at deciphering why this guy got paid to sit at home and drink beer or walk his dog, etc.? I think every time I read those three words, they're just created out of thin air by lazy "journalists". "We polled a group of made up experts in our head, and this is what they came up with" is a more likely source for these so called "experts" everyone pulls out of their posterior.

Oddly enough, I know someone who has basically that Ph.D, although it's more about analysis of cost and time overruns on large scale projects. He used to work for a contractor to the feds working in Navy shipbuilding, and he's got stories that I wish I could say were unbelievable. He's retired now, and it's not like his having that Ph.D convinced the Navy to not do any of the stupid shit they wanted to do, but it does exist.
