Brickbat: So That's Where It Was

In Texas, the Lubbock Independent School District has placed a police officer on administrative leave after a firearm was found in a faculty restroom. The officer reportedly left the gun in the restroom. The school system did not release the officer's name or say who found the gun.

Was it one of those AR-16's that'll vaporize your body? Or just one of those Glocks that'll blow your lungs out?
I didn't realize Officer Byrd moved to Texas.
Only trained government agents should carry guns.
Suspension. No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers' dirty looks.
Yet another example of the need for proper gun control.
Apparently, schools in Lubbock, TX are such an unmitigated war zone, such killing fields, that Sgt. Slaughter feels obligated to hit the head with a gun on his hip and just knowing that certain death awaited him on the other side of the bulletproof bathroom stall doors. But not so unmitigated that accidentally leaving his sidearm there didn't cost anyone their life... this time.
I didn’t get that sarcasm.
Schools should have armed protectors to shoot back at school killers.
The protectors need training on not forgetting their guns when leaving the bathroom.
This is a surprisingly common problem.
I have heard this story at least three times. It's kinda depressing. I've never left *my* gun in the can.
Also,
-Never had an AD with a weapon that wasn't pointed down range.
-I've never locked my keys in my car or in my house.
-I've never left any of my kids in the back seat of my car while I was at work.
-I was in my early teens, without a licence, the last time I backed over and destroyed anything with a vehicle.
Some people are immune to certain forms of stupidity, some people, apparently, need mRNA injections against it every couple of months.
And I'm by no means perfect. Probably about a week on the job before I'd be doing something not-duty-related, and no amount of training, probably nothing short of regular incoming fire, would prevent me from finding something to do... but I wouldn't leave my gun in the can.
Thing is - the rest of us don't need that training. Non-cops don't forget their guns in the bathroom.
re: "Schools should have armed protectors to shoot back at school killers."
No, they really shouldn't because those "school killers" are so astonishingly rare as to be statistical anomalies. The "armed protectors", on the other hand, are around constantly and do harm on a weekly basis. Just look in the history of articles here about how school 'resource officers' are being abused to escalate what should be routine school discipline into criminal matters.
In fact, this kind of absurd overreaction to statistical rarities is what breeds the very carelessness, boredom and ineffectiveness of the response. It is a near-classic example of the wrong way to respond to very-low-frequency risk.
The “armed protectors”, on the other hand, are around constantly and do harm on a weekly basis.
I actually noted the distinction wrt “armed protector”. To me, an armed protector is someone who owns a weapon(s) but may or may not have it on them at any given moment as they have other job roles as their primary duty. The person whose primary duty is to be armed and providing security and order is a guard. The secretary outside a/the general’s office may be armed and may have a duty to protect the General, and thus be an armed protector, but they are a Secretary, not a guard.
Not how I interpreted docduracoat's comment but maybe. I will certainly concede that jurisdictions allowing armed teachers have shown remarkably better results and fewer adverse consequences than jurisdictions bringing in police as school 'resource officers'.
I know where all my firearms are currently. I have never lost one as that would be completely irresponsible. I am too white from European descendants to think otherwise.
I've ever lost a gun either, but I have found one. A newer Remington 870 leaning against a tree at a trailhead. At least it was unloaded.
I once found some lost guns at the bottom of a lake in a boat that had tragically sunk. Fortunately, I knew the owner and was able to return them.
I used to work as an armed security guard. The company that I worked for had an excellent training program. One of the things that was taught was what to do with your weapon when you used the restroom. The instructor also told us a few things about concealed carry. The main point was that if you are going to carry, then carry all of the time. You have to get used to the weapon being on you. That way, you are not drawing attention to yourself by fidgeting with it and not constantly adjusting your holster. That includes having a plan for using the restroom while carrying. For me, it isn't really an issue because I use a shoulder holster.
Why do morons do this?
Just keep the gun. Don't say anything.
1. Hey, free gun!
2. You took the gun out of the hands of someone too incompetent to have one. Good job.
No, they'd treat the thief more severely than the cop who lost the gun.
You think there aren't cameras in the hallway and that a false accusation of theft wouldn't be used as an excuse to distract attention from the negligent cop?
so Mikey Corleone could use it at lunch ...
Outstanding.
'....The Trace found at least a dozen incidents in which an officer drove off with a firearm resting on the hood or bumper of a car. One Missouri state trooper forgot a rifle on the side of a highway after stopping to help a stranded motorist. DEA agents left guns in a CVS restroom, in a Lyft car, and in the seat pocket of an aircraft. In 2011, a handgun fell out of an agent’s ankle holster while he was attending a concert in Chicago...' And now this travesty in the land of Buddy Holly - currently with a population that is 5% European descent..
Seriously (because I don't carry), why would you take it off ? Isn't on-campus security required to have firearms in retention holsters in case of scuffles ?

Look, he went into the bathroom to play with one gun or another. He chose the bigger one.
Retention holsters are going to be a very jurisdiction-specific requirement. It may be a good idea but it's not a universal requirement.
Regardless, the article doesn't say that the weapon was found unholstered, just that it was unsecured. Most police carry in some form of waist or belt holster which means the holster will either be in the way or will completely drop to the floor when you unbuckle and sit on the toilet. Given the condition of most school restroom floors, I wouldn't want any of my stuff in the mess either. My guess is that the cop removed the holster and either placed it on a counter or hung it from a hook, just like you might a backpack or overcoat, but then forgot to put it back on when done.
All of which is a possible reason but most definitely not an excuse. This careless cop deserves the same arrest, prosecution and punishment as he/she would inflict on any civilian who equally careless leaving a loaded weapon unattended around children. (Actually deserves more because cops are supposed to be held to a higher standard but I'll take any smidgen of accountability we can get.)
...or arrest and indict the idiot, the way they would a student, parent, teacher or janitor!
