Brickbat: This Blows

A Washington, D.C., law that took effect earlier this year bans the use of gas-powered leaf blowers. The law carries a fine of up to $500. But it exempts those using leaf blowers on federal property. USA Today reports Washington is one of several cities around the country that have recently banned or are considering bans on gas-powered leaf blowers.

I second that emotion.
Yes, your betters must be protected from their own rules.
And let me guess; If you don't clean the leaves from your yard you'll be fined until the 'special privileged' class takes your house? At which point then they of course can use the leaf blower....
This is sick. Pure 'elitist - special privileges' BS.
Just a couple of thoughts…
Use a rake. It’s slower but more effective at concentrating leaves into a pile for disposal. Blowers can only do that if you’ve got a corner into which the leaves can be blown and even then they’re still sloppy.
There are plenty of battery-powered blowers available these days and they are good enough for the average property size in DC. I have one with a 4 AmpHr battery and a 2.5 AH battery for back-up. The 4 AH battery usually lasts about 35 – 40 minutes, which is sufficient for my needs most of the time. I don’t use it exclusively for leaves anywhere except inside the garage; I use it to clear grass clippings (and leaves) off the driveway and loose dirt (and leaves) off the porches.
This law won’t be a big problem for home-owners. It will be a huge problem for garden care businesses. When my battery runs out, I’m usually finished anyway. A professional gardener doesn’t have that luxury, which is why they use gas-powered models. If they have to switch to batteries, they will need plenty of spares.
My guess is they will get around the problem by having a diesel generator to power their chargers. Typical of politicians to not be able to see the totally foreseeable consequences of their stupid decisions. I suspect someone has been paid off by the battery makers.
Just a thought, how about they mind their own business.
I like the way you think.
Just work online and earn money. He now makes over $500 a day by working from home. I made $19,517 last month just doing this online job 2 hours a day. so easy and no special skills required…You can run google and then make this work.

How are you going to recharge it when they reserve the entire grid for recharging their electric cars (that you can't afford)?

LOL@"saving the environment reasonably" by using DC when AC, which is both more powerful and more efficient, is literally within arm's reach.
I have an AC blower - it's power cord is 2 inches long (what idiot thought that was a good idea?). It's of limited use without an extension cord but, I do have a 35 yard cord and a 15 yard cord. I just find the cordless blower more convenient, even if it is less powerful (I don't give a f*ck about electrical efficiency). And, I didn't mention "saving the environment" so, I don't know why you think I care about that.
My point was that homeowners aren't really the ones most affected by this law; it's gardening businesses that will have to find ways to get around it. An AC blower is useless if you don't have access to a power point and the same applies to DC chargers. Gardeners will have to use a diesel generator to supply electricity either way.
*Having now read the original article, it seems the DC law is more about noise pollution than anything else so, businesses will use generators to get around the regulation. Commifornia, on the other hand, wants to ban the use of gas altogether because, they are a bunch of idiots. Rich people will just hire more illegals to do all the extra work, while everyone else will have to get used to doing all their yard work the old fashioned way - iow back-breaking manual labor. They certainly won't be using electric tools because, the grid will be constantly failing due to all the stupid decisions Commifornia politicians keep making.
" the DC law is more about noise pollution than anything else so"
Obviously. You'd have to be utterly batshit insane for your mind to go anywhere else with this one. People are fucking fed up with ring-ding-a-ding unsilenced two-strokes. Leaf blowers have only become a thing in the last decade or two, and they have managed to piss off pretty much everyone in almost no time.
I mean, I love little two strokes, some of my favourite engines, and even I'm pissed off at how much of the time I can hear someone's gardener half a mile away through my open window. And don't get me started about the idiot next door who thinks 7am on a weekend is the right time to run noisy power tools in his garden.
So sensitive this one is. Poor baby.
I love little two strokes
That's all it takes for you, huh?

I love how this floated off into noise ordinance territory.
It's not a law against noise in case anyone missed the entire premise.
What else is it? You have brainworms.
Its banning a product; has nothing to do with the noise. If it was about noise then it would be an ordinance about noise.
ROFL. Actual wriggly brain-eating worms.
re: " the DC law is more about noise pollution"
If that were true, then they would have passed a law that actually addressed noise instead of the engine type. If you don't like the noise, put a muffler on the engine. It won't make that much difference, though. Electric leaf blowers are just about as noisy as the gas ones. The bulk of the noise is from the air flow, not the engine.
Electric lawn mowers, on the other hand, are substantially quieter than their gas counterparts - and the law doesn't address lawn mowers at all. The evidence does not support your claim that noise reduction had anything plausible to do with this law.
"The bulk of the noise is from the air flow, not the engine."
Bullshit. Total bullshit. Absurd bullshit. Who do you think you're fooling with nonsense like this?
As for your muffler suggestion, you evidently don't know how two-strokes work.
And, I didn’t mention “saving the environment” so, I don’t know why you think I care about that.
OK, good. If you don't care, then I didn't offend.
Still LOLing at all the other idiots who (e.g.) buy 40V cordless mower for more than 3X the cost of the 13A AC mower for the convenience of saving the planet.
Neighbor down the street had an AC trimmer. He switched to cordless electric after he cut through the third extension cord with it. Kinda makes you think the greenies aren't exactly wrong in in the notion that the herd could use some thinning.
No-one buys a cordless tool instead of a corded one to 'save the planet'. They buy one for the convenience of having a cordless tool. You're suffering from brainworms. The good news is there's a simple treatment for brainworms: you can shoot them with one of those guns you love so much.
LOL. So how many of your extension cords did you mow through Davedave?
None. What is wrong with you? Do you still use a corded drill?!
I think the bigger issues is lawn-care businesses. They can't get by on a 35-40 minute run time, and a typically day of operation for them would require dozens of batteries (and enough chargers to get them charged up for the following day)
Add in the inevitable ban on all gas-powered lawn equipment and they'll need a whole additional truck just to haul their batteries around.
LOL. I already use power tools all day with similar power outputs. I have one (double slot) charger and 4 5ah batteries.
Astonishingly, people whose homes I'm working on have mains electricity supplies I can use for charging during the day. Whodathunkit?
There's already enough hot air in DC. Am I right, people?
The public must lie prostrate before the criminal element. Activists want to ban armed security:

"On April 27, Banko Brown, a black transgender individual, was shot and killed by a San Francisco security officer working at a local Walgreens. Days later, protesters held a rally and demanded the pharmacy retail chain store fire the guard.
“It’s insane that Walgreens has armed security, there’s nothing in that store worth a human life, and Walgreens is not taking care of our community,” Jessica Nowlan of the Young Women’s Freedom Center told a local Fox affiliate on Monday. “We demand an end to armed security.”
However, on Tuesday, District Attorney Jenkins held a press conference in which she declined to press charges.
“We reviewed witness statements, statements from the suspect, and video footage of the incident and it does not meet the People’s burden to be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt to a jury that the suspect is guilty of a crime,” the public defender insisted. “The evidence clearly shows that the suspect believed he was in mortal danger and acted in self-defense.”"
"Don't believe conservative's exaggerated narratives about SF." - Greenhut
I'm not sure I'm creative enough to parody SF.
Hey, I love this idea for San Francisco. Make Nancy get rid of her armed security! There's nothing there worth an actual human's life!
Jessica Nowlan: “We demand an end to armed security.”
Every politician everywhere: "F*ck You!"
there’s nothing in that store worth a human life
What about the humans that work there?
Well, we could actually admit that the leaves are on the ground to provide warmth to the earth so things can grow in the spring, and just stop moving leaves from where God/nature puts them.
Or go back to manually raking them to the curb and dropping a match, like in the days of pre-history.
“Well, we could actually admit that the leaves are on the ground to provide warmth to the earth so things can grow in the spring…”
Ummm, we already turned the planet into a greenhouse. Do you even climate change?
.
those assholes at 1600 keep blowing their leaves through the gates into our yard at 1596!
"But it exempts those using leaf blowers on federal property."
I don't think it exempts them. Rather, the D.C. government does not have authority over what happens on property owned by the U.S. government, so they couldn't ban them there even if they wanted to.
