Riley Gaines Says She Was Attacked by Trans Activist Students at SFSU

The college swimmer was reportedly forced to barricade herself in a room for three hours.

Riley Gaines is a former college swimmer who competed against Lia Thomas and has criticized the unfairness of including transgender athletes in women's sports. On Thursday, she appeared at San Francisco State University to speak on the subject.

Activists allegedly tried to drown out her event by making so much noise that it would be impossible to hear her; after the event, they chased her, physically assaulted her, and trapped her in a room for three hours.

That's according to numerous accounts of the event from conservative news sources, including Fox News and the New York Post. Louis Barker, Gaines' husband, said his wife was struck multiple times by "a guy in a dress," even while under police protection. Videos circulating on social media do not specifically depict the assault, but they do show activists attempting to get at Gaines.

Another video shows campus administrators negotiating with the student activists, attempting to persuade them to disperse so that Gaines could leave campus. One activist suggests that they each be paid $10 to do so.

Gaines was ultimately barricaded inside the room from three hours. Gaines did not immediately responded to a request for comment.

The New York Post reported that student-activists affiliated with the university's Queer and Trans Resource Center (QTRC) had helped organize the protest. QTRC is denying any involvement, however.

"The protest at Turning Point USA's event was organized by an individual who is not an SF State student and is not a part of the QTRC," the resource center tells Reason.

A spokesperson for the University Police Department (UPD) at SFSU says the incident is being investigated.

"There were no arrests related to the event," the spokesperson tells Reason. "The disruption occurred after the conclusion of the event which made it necessary for UPD officers to move the event speaker from the room to a different, safe location."

Charlie Kirk, president of Turning Point USA, the conservative student organization that invited Gaines to campus, said on Twitter, "This is unacceptable at an American college campus, even in San Francisco."

He's right. San Francisco State University is a public institution, which means that it is bound by the First Amendment. Student organizations have every right to invite controversial speakers to campus; other students may protest those speakers, but they may not engage in violence or prevent them from freely moving about campus. It's all well and good that Gaines was able to give her remarks, but the alleged attack and apparent obstruction of her exit are still alarming acts of anti-speech intimidation.

One need not agree with Gaines or Turning Point USA to recognize that the First Amendment protects her absolute right to contribute to the debate about transgender athletes in sports.

Arrest them all for kidnapping or hostage taking. That might take a little wind out of their sails.

And felony theft if they for even moment disrupted others from getting the education they paid for.

What does this have to do with a free speaking event late at night on a college campus? It wasn’t an official part of the campus curriculum. It was a private event.

But if you want to get folks for “felony theft” for interfering in other people’s education, go after the parents banning books from school classrooms and libraries.

Somebody used or threatened to use violence for THEIR tribe!!! “Got him”, ass asshole JesseBahnFuhrer says!!! Go GET him, says self-righteous JesseBahnFuhrer!!! Assholes are ass assholes do and say!

The intelligent, well-informed, and benevolent members of tribes have ALWAYS been feared and resented by those who are made to look relatively worse (often FAR worse), as compared to the advanced ones. Especially when the advanced ones denigrate tribalism. The advanced ones DARE to openly mock “MY Tribe’s lies leading to violence against your tribe GOOD! Your tribe’s lies leading to violence against MY Tribe BAD! VERY bad!” And then that’s when the Jesus-killers, Mahatma Gandhi-killers, Martin Luther King Jr.-killers, etc., unsheath their long knives!

“Do-gooder derogation” (look it up) is a socio-biologically programmed instinct. SOME of us are ethically advanced enough to overcome it, using benevolence and free will! For details, see http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Do_Gooders_Bad/ and http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Jesus_Validated/ .

In conclusion, troglodytes, thanks for helping me to prove my points!

Then they crucified Jesus, ’cause Jesus made them look bad! ALSO because Jesus made them look bad FOR THEIR STUPID, HIDE-BOUND TRIBALISM! “The parable of the Good Samaritan” was VERY pointed, because the Samaritans were of the WRONG tribe, in the eyes of “Good Jews” of the day.

You resent the hell out of the fact that many other people are flat-out, better, more honest people than you are, right? More “live and let live”, and WAAAY less authoritarian?
                https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/in-love-and-war/201706/why-some-people-resent-do-gooders
From the conclusion to the above…
These findings suggest that we don’t need to downplay personal triumphs to avoid negative social consequences, as long as we make it clear that we don’t look down on others as a result.

SQRLSY back here now… So, I do NOT want you to feel BAD about YOU being an authoritarian asshole, and me NOT being one! PLEASE feel GOOD about you being an evil, lying asshole! You do NOT need to push me (or other REAL lovers of personal liberty) down, so that you can feel better about being an asshole! EVERYONE ADORES you for being that asshole that you are, because, well, because you are YOU! FEEL that self-esteem, now!

        2. Sometimes a Great Notion   2 years ago

Been awhile but I’d assume there are still night classes at colleges. So if any of these assholes kept someone from getting to their class than felony theft charges are warranted.

Parents presumably paid for those schools with their tax dollars, so they get a say in how they are run. Its called democracy. Which I’ve been told dies in the dark, so it must be good that parents are bring the curriculum into the light.

And that may be the greatest madness here. This is a group of the most privileged people in the world, spending 4 years at activism camp that someone is coughing up 6 figures for. A lot of schools have been promoting themselves as places to do activism for decades.

” This is a group of the most privileged people in the world”

Not all Diane. In the crowd, along with the moonbats, I’d be willing to bet were some semi-normal, beta males who were whooping and hollering right along with their girlfriends in the hope that she’d get all worked up and wet, and he’d get a little taste that night. That type wouldn’t usually last long enough to do her any good though.

“Says she was attacked”..JC what do you think that was Robbie? There are no such things as “trans rights” You want to pretend you are the opposite sex..no one cares but that doesn’t mean you have the “right” to compete or engage in any biological difference action like sports. And you don’t have the right to sexualize kids and mutilate them for your enjoyment. Trans is a mental illness not a sexual preference.

As for sports..most high school boys best 800 meters runner would qualify and medal for a woman’s olympic 800 meter final. think about that…

Turns out it’s only about 95% fatal. Most people die of ‘multiple blunt force trama’ from hitting the water at ~80 mph, some drown, and a few do survive.

How about “disperse or you are all expelled and will be arrested for trespassing”.

    1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

Doesn’t happen when the people in power are entirely sympathetic to the political use of power. It’s exactly the same with the Trump charges-those charges absolutely won’t be dismissed because the person who can dismiss them is a judge who wants to see Trump in prison as well.

This is what happens when you devalue free speech as a principle, independent of being government protected. People don’t feel they have any obligation to respect people who say something they disagree with and they accept treating them unequally.

“The protest at Turning Point USA’s event was organized by an individual who is not an SF State student and is not a part of the QTRC,” the resource center tells Reason.

Ah okay. So just arrest all the students for insurrection, then.

  10. shawn_dude   2 years ago

Key points most media accounts are glossing over:
1 – She was able to give her full speech in the classroom with everyone in attendance being generally quiet and polite.
2 – Things got a little more noisy once she went to the Q&A portion and she made it half-way through before people started getting upset.
3 – The attendees, according to the Gateway Xpress student paper, were roughly 2-1 pro-trans rights. Some pro-trans rights attendees did express to the journalists that they were interested in hearing her express her ideas.
4 – A significant portion of the protesters do not appear to have been students, which is not surprising given San Francisco–a city known for welcoming and respecting LGBT persons.
5 – At this point, we don’t know if the person who may have struck her was a student.
6 – The university police force is small.

Also… having this talk in a classroom in a building with limited exits, knowing in advance that it would draw protesters (the whole purpose for this to begin with), seems like bad planning. On whose part, I don’t know, but they should have known she’d have to leave the building through a group of protesters.

    1. The Margrave of Azilia   2 years ago

      1. They committed kidnapping by refusing to allow her to leave.

      2. They became violent.

Your other points are just excuse making.

      1. shawn_dude   2 years ago

They cleared a path for her to leave. I would understand if she didn’t trust that. There’s a difference between “you cannot leave” and “you can leave but have to listen to us berate you as you walk out.” The protesters had every right to be on a public campus so the failure to get her out more quickly may rest with the campus police. (Personally, I’d blame the person who selected a room in that building with limited exits and narrow hallways and then the person on Gaines’s TPUSA team who didn’t get that changed. Incredibly poor planning. Everyone knew there would be a protest, which is probably why she was there in the first place.)

“They” didn’t become violent. There’s an accusation that one person struck her. The police in that situation didn’t detain that person. Why, I’m not sure. But there were over 100 protesters there and one person is accused having struck her. The audience in the video is clearly listening to the associate dean and not acting like they’re out of control.

No they didn’t. They attacked her on the way out. Cops had to keep her in a locked room for safety. They even joked about getting paid for hostage ransom. They continued to threaten violence which is why they stuck around for 2 hours. Yes they were violent. Surrounding someone, hitting them, refusing to let them leave is violence.

          Youre full of shit.

You’re trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Maybe you’re just butt-hurt that a bunch of young people sat with her in a classroom and listened to her without interruption? That there wasn’t anything worse than having her stuck in a classroom for a few hours? And that when the police told the protesters to leave or be arrested, they left and Gaines left a few minutes later?

The very idea of protesting a speaker, on whatever topic, merely for speaking, at an institution supposedly dedicated to open enquiry, should be anathema. If you disagree, challenge them with polite questions, or have your own event where you present your ideas. They are trying to silence one side of an active debate that is far from settled. A school tolerating that is damn close to worthless.

      1. shawn_dude   2 years ago

This doesn’t make any sense. She was given her full time to speak. No one interrupted her. The protests happened outside of the venue and then inside after she finished. And they weren’t protesting her because she was “merely speaking” but because she was advocating for removing freedoms from a historically oppressed minority.

This was a private event taking place late at night after normal school hours. She acquired the venue because it is a public building. The school sent out an email to all staff and students earlier in the week reminding people that she had a right to speak without interruption. They had police and administrators there to maintain peace (which you can see happening in the video.) The attendees didn’t interrupt her speech.

“challenge them with polite questions” Why should she get the benefit of politeness that she hasn’t been willing to give to others? Since when does free speech demand politeness, anyway? And why should trans people have to be polite when they speak and homophobes can yell, scream, threaten, and accusing them of being pedophiles? Are you making a “know your place” argument here?

        1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   2 years ago (edited)

You may disagree, but it makes perfect sense. They angrily protested her because she dared to disagree with them. That is what I am saying is inappropriate and wrong. To say nothing of the violence and threats of violence.
And they weren’t protesting her because she was “merely speaking” but because she was advocating for removing freedoms from a historically oppressed minority.
You mean like women? (Not a minority, but do you really think women athletes have no legitimate grievance here?)
I’m making no excuses for asshole activists on the other side of the debate. They should also try to have a respectful debate. Free speech doesn’t demand politeness, but it’s still a good thing.

        3. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 years ago

she was advocating for removing freedoms from a historically oppressed minority.

When exactly in history have men been an oppressed minority? What freedom what she advocating to be removed?

Why should she get the benefit of politeness that she hasn’t been willing to give to others?

When was she impolite? When she objected to swimming against a full grown man in a womens’ swim competition? What part of that is remotely impolite?

How do you justify just making shit up and posing it as an argument?

          1. Zeb   2 years ago

dude_bro’s approach seems to be to assume that an active debate has already been settled so everyone who disagrees should just shut up because it’s mean and unfair.

Oh, she had it coming because you think she was rude (without, of course, expressing when she was rude). Given their violence and mental disorders — why should I give two shits about trans issues? If one is getting angry, should I not prepare to answer their violence?

    4. JesseAz   2 years ago

Oh wait. Your talking points are even more bullshit.

Lahren was called a White supremacist before the event and could see protesters frantically banging on the doors while she was speaking. Her speech was cut short, and she was escorted into a campus kitchen where she was barricaded until police arrived. Police and an emergency response team organized her exit through a loading dock.

So speech wasn’t allowed in full. They had to exit through a loading dock for her safety.

          1. mad.casual   2 years ago

You’re also letting them steal a base or two. That is, IMO, while “left-wing” vs. “progressive” maybe more of taking a big lead rather than full steal, “right-wing” vs. “conservative” is taking a base and rolling it all up into “reporting a falsehood” rounding the corners with your head down.

Maybe Robbie doesn’t remember that the New York Post vetted the laptop story before running it. Maybe he doesn’t remember the rest of the media knowingly jumped the gun shouting them down. Maybe (dubiously) that’s what he means when he says conservative. But, ultimately yeah, either call them dishonest, assert that he thinks they’re jumping the gun, assert that they’re icky or, ideally, just cut out the mealy-mouthed douchebaggery altogether.

I use the term “categorically different” when I refer to women competing against men, but that doesn’t capture it. Avi never broke into what would be considered the top/open Men’s weight class in competitive lifting (265+). He weighs (250) what would effectively be two weight classes above the women’s top weight class (185+)… if they went up that high. Categorical doesn’t describe it accurately. It’s, lierally, objectively, an acategorical distinction.

    BE SCARED!

COVID-19 isn’t “just a flu,” with a study of hospital patients finding that the virus was still 60% deadlier than influenza in the winter that just ended.

Greater immunity against the coronavirus, better treatments and different virus variants lowered COVID’s mortality risk to about 6% among adults hospitalized in the U.S. last winter from 17-21% in 2020, researchers at the Clinical Epidemiology Center of the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System in Missouri found. That was still much higher than the flu’s death rate of 3.7%.

“This finding should be interpreted in the context of a two-to-three times greater number of people being hospitalized for COVID-19 versus influenza in the US in this period,” epidemiologist Ziyad Al-Aly and colleagues wrote in a letter Thursday in the journal JAMA. The research is based on an analysis of electronic health records in databases kept by the Department of Veterans Affairs, which operates the largest nationally integrated health care system in the U.S.

    1. Idaho Bob   2 years ago

I was wondering if the article was going to mention age. Last line:

VA users are mostly older white men, which might limit how generalizable the findings are to other groups, the authors said.

In other words, the entire article is bullshit.

    2. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

They’re really reaching here, aren’t they, to keep an easily survivable virus in the news as a bogeyman.

    3. Zeb   2 years ago

What would the flu death rate be if we tested every single person who died for flu and called it a flu death if the test was positive?

And in any case, so what? The vaccine didn’t work, what else are you going to do? Try to hide from a respiratory virus that everyone is going to get for the rest of your life?

Electronic medical records are not a good source of data anyway. That’s not what they are for.

    4. mad.casual   2 years ago (edited)

the virus was still 60% deadlier than influenza … This finding should be interpreted in the context of a two-to-three times greater number of people being hospitalized for COVID-19 versus influenza in the US in this period

Somebody check my math but 2-3X as likely to hospitalize you, but only 60% more deadly adds up to “isn’t *even* ‘just a flu’”, not “isn’t ‘just a flu’”.

Edit: Seriously, they’re either fudging the numbers, committing a medical/statistical/mathematical fallacy, or both (right?). If it’s 60% more deadly and 2-3X more people are showing up with it, it should still be up in the 17-21% of total hospital deaths, not in the 3.7-6% range.

Riley Gaines “says” she was attacked, “claims” she was “allegedly” forced to barricade herself in a room, but there’s no direct evidence of her claims. Remember, she’s a liar who also claims there are physical differences between “men” and “women” when we all know that’s not true when even noted anthropologists acknowledge that there’s no discernible differences between men’s and women’s skeletons. It’s just a remnant of cishetero patriarchy which led them to just assume that “King” Tut was a man rather than an actual queen. Or that “Queen” Cleopatra wasn’t actually a man, since we know how much the Romans were into pederasty and sodomy. Why are you even giving this crazy bimbo any sort of platform to spew her nonsense?

The gay and lesbian community don’t “just seem like normal people” either.

How many violent interruptions and harassments have we seen from right wing objectors to leftwing speakers?

  29. damikesc   2 years ago

Given their behavior as of late — why should trans lives mean much to me? Seems any blowback they receive is deeply and earnestly deserved.

Because they are your fellow humans and only most are not engaging in any violence.

        1. Livemike   2 years ago

No, being trans is not the same as being a trans activist. I’m white that doesn’t mean that I share the blame for every action by those that claim to be protecting white people.

          1. Truthfulness   2 years ago

Just who exactly is “protecting white people”? You’re gonna see far more individuals and organizations protecting those who consider themselves “trans” (who are activists, mind you; they are making a statement that they’ve changed genders and demand us to acknowledge their impossibility). You make zero sense.

The decline of of the education system is oft commented and debated…
But its rare one finds such a dramatic demonstration of the decline
    2/
    The implications are clear.
School has measurably gotten remarkably dumber over the past 80 years such that the intelligence require to complete an undergraduate degree today is LESS than the intelligence required to graduate Highschool in the 1940s.
    3/
You might be taken aback by this, I was.
but a few anecdotes from the 40s quickly disabuse you of any doubt.
In the 40s you could leave high-school and go directly into management track at a bank… at the Time when “branch manager” was a profession on par with town doctor

In a disgusting attack on the right to self defense, Daniel Perry has been found guilty of murder for defending himself against a BLM extremist.

He was found not guilty on the other charge, which was aggravated assault

This is happened in the capitol of self-proclaimed deep-red “pro-gun” state. @GovAbbott has not taken any action in response to this attack on self defense from a Soros-Financed DA

The case was prosecuted by a Soros-financed DA who was accused of criminal witness tampering by the lead investigator to even get the case past a Grand Jury

Perry can appeal the case. As it’s a state case, @GovAbbott does have pardon power

The man Perry killed was affiliated with boogaloo, while some Boogs don’t support BLM, the ones who did in 2020 were extremely violent

Boog Steven Carrillo murdered a federal officer & sheriff deputy, at a court hearing he wore a “We the people, BLM, Portland, George Floyd” mask

The state said that Perry instigated it by driving into the crowd, however forensic experts reconstructed the incident and stopped for the crowd, not hitting a single person.

Following this extremist Jeremy Lent kicked his car, he later proceeded to lie about this to police.

The man Perry killed (Garrett Foster) then approached his car and raised his firearm while in a bladed stance.

Perry had lowered his window to figure out what was going on, but fearing an impending attack from Foster, Perry defended himself.

    1. mad.casual   2 years ago

More cogently: Perry didn’t spray bullets into the crows. He didn’t know Foster or know that he’d be at the protest (he wasn’t even aware of the protest until he turned the corner), Perry didn’t give Foster the gun he was carrying or cause it to be in his possession, Foster walked up to the car of his own free will… manslaughter seemed unlikely but was conceivable. Murder is incomprehensible.

      1. Nardz   2 years ago

The rule of law no longer exists.
People need to stop living in denial.

    2. JohnZ   2 years ago

Keep in mind, Austin, Tx. is a liberal shite hole and the D.A. is most likely another of George Soros’ little organ grinder monkeys.
I hope Perry appeals the conviction.
Otherwise, the entire idea of justice is dead. The rule of law has become the rule of men.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

Keep in mind, Austin, Tx. is a liberal shite hole and the D.A. is most likely another of George Soros’ little organ grinder monkeys.

That’s basically what happened. Perry wasn’t initially charged, but when the current DA took the seat, he went ahead and filed them. This being Austin, Perry had no chance of a fair trial once the charges were set against him.

Fortunately, it looks like Abbott is getting ready to pardon him, but the lesson here is that only the left’s allies are allowed to use violence against people. Red states need to start throwing the book at leftists when they get uppity, and ignore federal judges who say that they can’t be charged.

Its weird. I hear a lot of cries from Tony et al about fascism and right wing violence.

But I dont see any recent examples of right wingers behaving this way. They put Trump flags on their truck and drive around, or actually peacefully protest (where nothing gets burned down).

The only recent examples of violence are all coming from the far left and the tranny cult.

The amount of gaslighting required to not realize this is absurd. We have tons of video of left wing domestic terrorists, screaming, attacking, and making demands of normal folks (surrounding them and screaming at them to “raise your fist!! say black lives matter!!” and getting violent when people dont comply, trapping them in their cars, etc). Also they attack people trying to simply film their ‘protests’. But ya, the right wingers, those are the real fascists, right?

    1. ThomasD   2 years ago

Meanwhile pathetic weathervanes like Soave have to equivocate with headlines that cannot even state the truth that Gaines was indeed attacked, instead stating it as her accusation, as if there was any real question.

alright brother, hit me with one. Since 2016 all we hear about is the dangerous, fascist, violent right wingers oppressing the benevolent caring lefties.

So show me. Ill take some examples. 2016 and on, please. Because for some reason, that year the left started finding ‘fascism’ everywhere .

Notice how the media covers these issues:

“Three trans girls playing sports is an emergency for Kansas Republicans”

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/apr/08/kansas-transgender-students-sports-week-in-patriarchy

Not a headline by the Guardian:

Three Christian children murdered by a tranny is an emergency for Tennessee democrats.

They are all doing it. “R’s pounce! on poor oppressed trannies!” Tranny kills someone: *crickets*. This is called repressive tolerance, its straight out of Marcuse.

The TN lawmakers are getting a whitehouse visit, national fame, and going down as national heroes of democracy for their insurrection. The Qanon shaman got thrown in jail for a couple years for walking his pleasantly confused ass around the capitol, escorted by capitol police who didn’t seem to take issue with his presence.

BLM can burn down your city, and if you dare defend yourself when one of them tries to kill you (Rittenhouse), they will try and end your life or see you spend the rest of it in prison.

You really don’t think that is a fair rejoinder in this context?

It isn’t like you weren’t here for everything that has happened over the last 6 years. “Believe all women” was as immutable as “thou shalt have no gods before Me” to a Christian.

Even when faced with fairly unimpeachable proof that an accuser was lying, people pressed ahead with the accusations under that exact banner (as in the case of Kavanugh).

It seems to be perfectly appropriate to toss this ludicrous standard back in their face at moments like this…. particularly since it is an accusation backed by eyewitnesses and video evidence and it is being couched almost as “despite dubious claims of assault, people should still be respectful of disparate views”.

        1. block30   2 years ago

I wish I was more eloquent like Cyto….

  48. edbeau99   2 years ago

When is it perfectly okay, in fact celebrated, for men to beat up women? When it’s a man claiming to be a woman, and the target of the beating is a conservative woman.

    1. block30   2 years ago

Yep. So what wave of feminism is that level of “nirvana.”?

  49. Cyto   2 years ago

    Who wrote this headline?

Is that really the story? She “claims”?

Would we ever write this story from this point of view if it was, say, lolice beating a suspect? If we had video and witnesses, would the headline be “Man claims police beat him”?

Heck, we rarely acknowledge that there is even a possibility of another side of things in such stories.

But for this one…. we are gonna couch it as if it were some highly dubious claims made by partisan activists?

Heck, you didn’t even come close to this level of tilted language in the initial reporting about Sandmann or Smollette. It wasn’t “Nathan Philips claims” as the initial story…. even though in that case the video clearly demonstrated that his version was a complete fabrication.

There are plenty of incongruous couchings of the language in the story, but the truly egregious one is the headline. The nut of this story is not some wild claim made by a far-right rabble-rouser.

So who wrote the headline. Why? Why did you decide to put such a spin on this story? To what end?

    1. Anastasia Beaverhausen   2 years ago

Because the only sources cited come from right-wing media. It’s entirely right for Reason to hedge in this manner, due to the overt bias of the “claims”.

      1. Truthfulness   2 years ago

What makes you think they’re lying? Why do you believe the “right-wing media” isn’t telling the truth? There’s proof that the event truly happened, and news outlets like the Guardian have failed to cover it. That’s lying by omission.

So I ask you, why aren’t they investigating the incident? If they found something that resembled a hoax, they would’ve gone bonkers over it. But since that isn’t the case (unlike what happened at Chicago with Jussie Smollett), they’ve stayed silent, because they know the Nashville shooting goes against their ideology, which is also yours.
