I Finally Caught COVID. The Government Made the Experience Even Worse.
Thanks to onerous regulations, life-saving drugs are more expensive and harder to get.

When I swallow, knives cut my throat.
I cough and sometimes can't stop. That's frightening.
I caught COVID.
Dodged it three years. But this week, I suddenly felt lousy, and a home test said: "positive." The thermometer said: 101.8.
No big deal, I thought. Almost everyone gets COVID. Lots of people say it's no worse than a cold.
I'm multi-vaccinated and boosted. My fever's not super high. I'm fit. This will give me a chance to lie around.
But then came the knives to my throat, and the cough that makes it hard to breathe.
Darn. This is much worse than any flu I've had. I feel miserable. It hurts so much to talk that I just text.
I think, "COVID still kills several hundred Americans every day." Will I be one? I do feel like I might die. But COVID mostly kills old people. Wait, that's me!
Actually, I'm very old. 76. I didn't think about being so old last week when I rode my bike and played volleyball. I felt like a kid. Now everything is different.
Half of American men don't even make it to 73. I forget that when I feel good.
I check what hospital I should go to if I have trouble breathing. My doctor calls in a Paxlovid prescription.
Day 2
Paxlovid leaves a nasty metallic taste. Someone is mining silver in my mouth.
Ibuprofen knocked my fever is down, but it's still above normal. The knives and strangling cough are still there.
Will I die? Short of that, will I have to go to the emergency room? Will they put me on a ventilator? I'm scared of that. I shouldn't have looked it up on Google.
Google makes everything scarier. Will I get long COVID? Have brain fog? Get COVID pneumonia? I've got to stop Googling.
But at least I'm not getting worse.
Day 4
I'm getting better! Crisis over!
Every swallow still hurts, but my cough no longer scares me. I no longer fear I'm going to die.
Thank you, Paxlovid!
Was it Paxlovid that made the difference? No way to know. But three cheers for America's much-vilified free market. Pfizer invented and produced this drug in just a year.
Pfizer did tests in which Paxlovid reduced deaths so much that the company was advised to stop the clinical trials and just give subjects the drug.
Still, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wouldn't let the rest of us take it for another three months.
Government kills people by delaying approval of life-saving drugs.
Yes, we want to be sure any new drug is safe, and delaying months is a big improvement over the 10 years they usually take. But it's still too long!
My brother's potentially life-saving drug, gelsolin, has been inching through the review process for almost 10 years.
The FDA's delays are a reason drugs cost so much.
At least during the pandemic, the FDA loosened regulations to get some medicines to people faster. Great.
But of course, once government is involved with anything, lots of things become more difficult.
Health and Human Services decided that they would distribute the pills.
One result: I can't get Paxlovid delivered from my local pharmacy.
CVS says it delivers, but their phone system hangs up when I ask for that. I send my son to pick it up.
The cost? Zero dollars, proudly printed on the label.
When government pays for things, common sense often goes away.
Paxlovid comes with 19 pages of detailed…instructions?
There is nonsense like "important notice related to privacy," telling me to sign and return a paper to CVS acknowledging "I have received CVS/Pharmacy Notice of Privacy."
That's another government complication, a HIPAA privacy rule. Government's obsession with paperwork and rules deters medical research and forces all of us to lie, (c'mon, you've done it), claiming we read fine print almost no one reads.
I'm glad I'm not dead. I'm grateful to Pfizer for creating Paxlovid. I'm grateful I live in America.
But more and more, I hate the intrusions of our ever-growing government.

Well, I will never know.
Is it me? Or is this dude kind of a drama queen?
Oh my god! I'm going to die! Worse than the flu! Ugh, just suck it up and wait three days, like the rest of us. Geez.
I'd bet that there's a Will that suggests he's considered all of this between bike rides and playing volleyball.
Are you familiar with Stossel's career? He's a TV news guy, of course he's a drama queen.
Stossel has some good ideas, but all of us are limited by our own horizons, and I suspect animal husbandry is well outside Stossel's horizond. TV talking heads who claim to know and pretend to wisdom advise us that ivermectin is horse paste and Neil Cavuto (FNC) seriously warned us “that stuff will kill you”. (Mr. Cavuto may well have been stupid enough to believe that, but if he denies such a degree of ignorance he must plead to knowingly lying to promote the government’s Royal Nonesuch.) And city folks weren’t aware you could get a ton of the stuff, without prescription, at any veterinary/farmer’s supply vendor. [sarc]Therefore I am sure that having both shots and the booster is all that saved Stossel’s life when this viral reaper came a’callin’. [/sarc]
And somehow it seemed to escape a lot of people’s notice that (1) ivermectin was developed and originally improved as a human medication and (2) that nations where it is widely used to prevent river blindness (or for other purposes) had much lower rates of COVID transmissibility and deaths. But whatever you do, don’t take that horse paste (unless you can’t get the sheep formulation that is easier to figure the human dose with), and always - ALWAYS - believe what the government and the TV tells you.
Ivermectin is good for some things, but it is useless against COVID-19. And anyone understanding biology at a junior high school level would understand why. Ivermectin is a drug used against parasitic diseases. COVID-19 is caused by a virus. There is a difference!
Hooray for Pfizer for finding a treatment that helps to treat this viral diesease.
And yet the numbers do not support your claims. The vaccine is nowhere near as effective as the government claims it is.
A drug can be good at more than one thing.
Who knew?
https://c19ivm.org/
Having read your response comment, I do believe that you do have a junior high school level of "understanding" biology.
If Ivermectin doesn't address viruses, then that is Royal NoneSuch.
Oh, and the run on Ivermectin created a shortage for the animal husbandepersons who really needed it. Thanks for the sour persimmons there, Cousins.
Oh, and not believing in bullshit includes all bullshit, whether from Government, Religion, Corporate Cronies, or some bumping around the cracker-barrel.
Did you catch that he is 76 years old, dips^&t?
It was more like 3 weeks for me with some symptoms continuing for another month. YMMV
More isn't better when it comes to vaccines.
I'd think twice about taking Paxlovid: it has some nasty side effects and it doesn't seem to help that much.
Big pharma loves you and would never put out a bad product.
At least Stossel had the good sense to get vaccinated... He is data-driven, unlike the followers of the Lizard People! (Vaccines aren't perfect, but so what? Food isn't perfect either, but sensible people eat food!)
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/united-states-rates-of-covid-19-deaths-by-vaccination-status?country=~All+ages
Just LOOK at the graph right at the top of this link!!!! COVID deaths among the unvaccinated VASTLY outnumbered, and still outnumber, the deaths among the vaccinated!!!
"I'm multi-vaccinated and boosted."
And it did nothing, Shillsy, and merely ameliorating symptoms is what aspirin does. Not vaccines.
You already know this, but continuing to post your favorite little outdated chart is effectively lying, because we both now know that deaths were overreported.
We also now know that vaccinated are the majority of Covid deaths.
58% of Americans dying due to COVID-19 were either vaccinated or boosted: Report
Add to that everything we now know about persistent spike proteins and myocarditis caused by the "vaccine", and it makes you look like a sociopath, Shillsy.
Cardiac Complications After SARS-CoV-2 Infection and mRNA COVID-19 Vaccination — PCORnet, United States, January 2021–January 2022
He IS a sociopath. He also has a host of other severe personality disorders.
Typical. You don't even read the link for reading comprehension. It stated that the risk of the unvax dying is 8 to 12 times higher than it is of the vax dying. And that's among the elderly - overwhelmingly vax.
You either don't understand what is being written or you deliberately choose to lie to spread your narrative. Prob the latter.
I looked at the numbers in the very table in the link. Depending on the age group, for people 30 and over, you were 8 to 36 times more likely to die if you weren't vaccinated. For people under 30, you can't even calculate that ratio from the table because so few people in those age groups who were vaccinated died.
The reason more deaths are in the vaccinated are that most Americans got vaccinated. This is simple math, and the simple mathematical theorem known as Bayes' Theorem that explains that was proven in the 18th century.
It is fascinating that an internet site called "reason.com" allows comments that defy simple mathematical logic. The promotion of such unreason results in the deaths of many who listen to the unreason.
See my reply below. The vaccines were not as effective as you claimed in the beginning.
Are you suggesting that Reason should censor comments for “misinformation”? It sure seems like you are.
No, the government claimed that the vaccines were able to provide far greater immunity than it actually was. Mother's Lament showed numbers that they were wrong. You ignore that for healthy individuals, taking the vaccine furthers their risks than if they were to simply catch COVID themselves.
You guys were wrong about the effectiveness of the vaccines.
Boosts don't do nothing.
They correlate with worse outcomes.
The more boosts, the worse for you.
Holy shit, dude. I had NO idea you were this stupid. Nice link LOL.
Ackshuyally, I'm not a Doctor and don't play one on TV, but using aspirin with a fever could cause Reyes Syndrome, which is truly horrible, deadly stuff:
Reyes Syndrome
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/reyes-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20377255
Hence, Stossel's use of Ibuprofen instead.
Take care of yourself, ML and everybody else. Knowledge is power and forewarned is forearmed.
My ring that keeps tigers away isn't perfect either. Why deny myself the use of it?
You should force everyone else to have one. For safety.
The tiger STOPS with each ring-wearing person.
"At least Stossel had the good sense to get vaccinated"
He's a traitor to libertarianism!!!
Government fearmongering works.
No, Stossel actually believes in reason and evidence.
Here is the table from the site that a person who doesn't linked to, claiming that the COVID vaccines were dangerous. Data are from late 2021.
Death rates from COVID-19 per 100,000
age (yrs.) unvaxed vaxed relative rate
0.5-4 0.11 0.00 **
5-11 0.02 0.00 **
12-17 0.07 0.00 **
18-29 0.26 0.00 **
30-49 2.89 0.08 36.13
50-64 12.32 0.58 21.24
65-70 52.03 2.20 23.65
80+ 72.26 9.25 7.81
** means too few deaths in the vaxed to calculate
Yet left out the fact that for healthy individuals there's greater risk to cardiac issues from the vaccine then if they were to catch COVID themselves.
The vaccines are not as effective as you claim. You are being deceptive.
“for healthy individuals there’s greater risk to cardiac issues from the vaccine then if they were to catch COVID themselves.”
Cite?
Said no one, ever.
Nearly every person here only (many of which got the vaccine) said it shouldn’t be forced and that it wasn’t as effective as they kept trying to make it sound.
Jesus H Science
Indeed, I dodged Covid for 2+ years, only catching it after vax. I’m overweight, middle aged, and male. It was a weird fever with an extremely stuffy nose but other than feeling very run down, that was it. Hardly anything justifying all the fearmongering.
Oh and suddenly post vax (but notably PRE Covid) I have had multiple sinus and ear infections (NEVER had them before), plus partial hearing loss with tinnitus. Not really a trade I would have made had I been informed: non-working vaccine that injures me? Thankfully I only took Janssen (J&J) rather than the mRNA heartstoppers, but I was on the fence and regret it. Not saying ‘No’ led to mandates and a shortage of competent medical staff (as the competent ones were educated enough not to take the shots).
And if the government is going to force the jab on citizens then people have the right to resist it.
In actual fact, Ivermectin has numerous effects on human physiology and biochemistry, and it is quite plausible for some of those to interfere with COVID-19 replication or pathogenesis (whether they actually do is another question).
If you think that a drug only has the effect it is prescribed for, perhaps it is you who has a "junior high school level of understanding of biology".
Again, Ivermectin is for parasites, not viruses. And "plausible" does not equal "definite."
Again, science is not a social club at Stepford playing horseshoes.
Nowhere did I say that it was "definite", I was simply pointing out that charliehall's and your reasoning is spurious.
Oh, look, TheReEncogitationer, our little Stepford wife is chiming in again.
Hey, tell me, does Dunning Kruger apply to mindless automata like you or were you just programmed this way?
You're the Stepford Wife. I'm trying to keep from crash-landing in your ideal community. And I'm not Dunning Kruger or anyone else for anything.
Indeed, you're not. You suffer from the effect they describe.
Quite funny!
Remember when the people amended the Constitution to allow the feds to regulate medicine?

Can't wait to see him praise Pfizer when he gets rebound COVID from paxlovid. I somehow doubt we will hear about it though.
It was the beard. When it was just a mustache, no COVID would dare try to invade.
Good to hear Stoss is on the mend, though.
Yeah, that magnificent stache did all the work needed, the beard is just overkill.
That is good

I despise Trump. But his Operation Warpspeed was his shining moment, a moment no one seems to recognize. Get the Federal Government out of the way of saving lives. Why this can't be applied to every other drug being developed is beyond my comprehension.
The progressives want to blame Fauci and Biden and Democrats for the vaccine, and the conservatives say it was developed to fast, or doesn't work. A pox on both.
I've had a lifelong friend die of Covid. My neighbor went to the hospital over it. Fortunately the virus has mutated into a less dangerous variants, but it's still going to kill people. And not just compromised. So treatments need to be Warpspeeded just like all treatments to save lives need to be Warpspeeded. Ditto for drugs that can prevent hospitalization in the first place.
Why this can’t be applied to every other drug being developed is beyond my comprehension.
Because we would end up with more useless drugs that are forced on us.
So #LibertariansForTheFDA?
Developing new drugs quickly and letting people use them if they want to is great as long as all information and data about the drugs is made public and no one is forced (and I include in "forced" having one's job or ability to live a normal life threatened) to take them. And the companies developing and selling them need to have complete liability if they release something prematurely that turns out to be dangerous.
It is illegal to make all that data public. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
Then they should abolish the law that makes that illegal. We want transparency.
You can’t have it both ways: either people get drugs early and take responsibility for their choices, or drug companies do the testing, release only one it’s safe, and are liable.
Easy access with manufacturer liability is not a feasible policy.
"I despise Trump. But his Operation Warpspeed was his shining moment, a moment no one seems to recognize. "
TDS-addled adolescent tit heard from: personality rules, right brandyshit?
Trump had nothing to do with the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine. Pfizer turned town the Warp Speed money. And it got the vaccine done a few weeks before Moderna, even though Moderna had a head start.
Both Progressives and Trump Cult Members hate the fact that a member of Big Pharma pulled this off so well.
TDS-addled shits are pleased, right, TDS-addled shit?
Colds and flu still kill healthy healthy people too. But COVID will remain your viral boogeyman forever.
My doctor calls in a Paxlovid prescription.
I found the first flaw in the plan.
Being 76 and not realizing that death has taken a majority of your same-age peers years ago?
Why is that a flaw?
3 months to consider safety and side effects and interactions etc., for something that could have been cooked up in someone's back yard still and that's still too long? This is ridiculous - I guess John was under pressure to produce something to meet a deadline? He sounds like the idiot who dives into a lake off the beaten path, without taking any time to consider a rock (and a lifetime of paralysis) may be in his future.
"Pfizer did tests in which Paxlovid reduced deaths so much that the company was advised to stop the clinical trials and just give subjects the drug."
Pretty compelling rationale to just go with the short term safety data, for something you take once, for five days.
And yet the numbers did not show this for healthy individuals. Pfizer also left out the fact that it wouldn't stop spread, or that that cardiac risks were bigger for young healthy adults than COVID itself.
Quit being deceptive.
"At least during the pandemic, the FDA loosened regulations to get some medicines to people faster. Great."
Except for Ivermectin. They made that medicine harder to get and pretended it was only for animals, although it has been used to treat people for various issues for decades, and medical boards are still going after doctors who treated their patients with the drug.
Since they're demanding the return of the signed acknowledgement of the privacy policy as a legal compliance issue, is there any consequence for patients who fail to do so?
Does HHS come and try to re-claim pills which were already consumed? Does the pharmacy which won't deliver that particular drug send someone out to collect either the paperwork or the return of the meds?
It's like the arrest scene in the beginning of "Brazil". "This is your receipt for your husband, and this is my receipt for your receipt."
Should have called David Schultz, he would have slapped the covid right outta him!
I had Covid more than once prior to the vaccine being available, only took it because it was that or lose my job. I was then forced to take a booster or lose my job, however I noticed since all of these studies have come out showing one that the vaccine was not that effective and two all the side affects they have clammed up about forcing us to be boosted again. I think they see the writing on the wall and it is just a matter of time before the lawsuits start.
As I understood it, the EUA waived ALL liability. Those lawsuits, if they come at all, will die a swift death.
Did it waive liability for companies who forced their employees to choose between staying employed or taking the shot? I am not talking about Pfizer but the companies who forced employees to take a shot that was still in emergency use waiver status.
That’s a good point.
I bet the Democrats will make sure you can’t.

Thanks, Warren. I meant to say that too.
Stay on the path of wellness, John Stossel, and keep being a forever-young supporter of Reason (the faculty if not the magazine) and Freedom!
ode to the newest plague
A tiny crown of thorns
Invisible in the wafting breeze
Lurking on the paths we trod
Which latches onto the lining of your soul
Drowning your vitality, your will, even your thoughts
As it sucks your essence
Wrings your head in a vise
And leaves you breathless, shuddering with chills and sweats
Aching, listless, wondering how Providence could be so cruel
To send this scourge for you
Wanting only to sink back into the deep silence
Of sleep’s oblivion
Until once more you are wracked and writhing with your body’s
Waning efforts to wrest control
From that tiny fragment of nucleic codes, proteins, and other slimy
Products of hapless biology.

I caught COVID the first week of March, 2020, week zero in the US, in a jazz speakeasy in New Orleans. I have never been so sick in my adult life.
But as I slowly recovered, it changed my life, from being a resigned and bitter divorcee to a man ready to love and father again!
Life is short. Make it worthwhile for the next generation.
