New York State Trooper Edward Longo has been charged with writing 24 fake traffic tickets, including one to a man who died earlier in the day the ticket was written. Longo wrote tickets for speeding, seat belt violations, and failure to signal a lane change, among other infractions. Documents filed by prosecutors say Longo's traffic enforcement numbers "fell consistently below" average, and he was trying to avoid a poor performance review.

A couple of observations are in order:

(1) A cop, or prosecutor, knowingly lying about a fact set that could result in a fine or incarceration for a citizen should be subject to the same penalty, in full, that the citizen was at risk for.

(2) Cops are (or should be) peace officers, protectors of the weak, and crime solving sleuths to help "police" the streets. When their job involves more than minimum participation in the raising of revenue for their venue, i.e., when they begin "enforcing for revenue" rather than enforcing for safety, they become functionally and in fact tax collectors; they will find that they then merit, and receive from the "policed", all the affection and respect that tax collectors have historically, from biblical times, enjoyed. When and if they allow themselves to become politicized enforcers of injustice, they will be regarded as the STASI or NKVD were, and everyone knows how desirous their "policed" populations were to help them.
