Nikki Haley Is Running for President

Expect a lot of harsh positioning on immigration and China.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will be announcing later this month that she'll be running for the Republican nomination for president. | Jessica Gallagher/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(Jessica Gallagher/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

It's unofficially official: Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will be announcing later this month that she'll be running for the Republican nomination for president.

On February 15, Haley will be making a "special announcement" at the Charleston, South Carolina, Visitor Center, and it's widely reported that it'll be a formal declaration of her run for president.

Haley has been making the rounds on Fox News and planting seeds for her run, telling Bret Baier in January, "I think it's time for new, generational change. I don't think you don't need to be 80 years old to go be a leader in D.C.," and then excerpting that clip on Twitter. Her profile's pinned tweet right now is of a subsequent appearance on Sean Hannity's show during which she not-very-subtly hinted at a run.

Today, she tweeted a link to an interview from 2021 where she called for a cognitive test for older politicians, seen as a dig at President Joe Biden, 80, and an observation about former President Donald Trump, 76, who has already announced he's running again.

Haley served Trump as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations but stepped down in 2018. They notably disagreed with how to deal with Russia's aggressive behavior when Trump was in office. Haley called for more sanctions against Russia in 2018, but Trump resisted both her and Congress until reluctantly relenting. It seems likely that this difference in position will be a point of contention during the race.

Haley supports U.S. and NATO assistance in arming Ukraine against Russia and also wants the U.S. to take a harder line against China's oppressive government. It's worth noting that she doesn't see trade conflicts with countries like China as an excuse for domestic corporate handouts. She opposed a bill last year to provide billions in federal subsidies to the domestic semiconductor chip industry, sold by the Biden administration as a way to resolve supply chain issues and compete with China. (Reason's Eric Boehm has been calling out the problems with this plan for some time.)

Though, a good chunk of her objection was over concerns that the money would be funneled to China through the market: "The way to encourage innovation and strengthen our national security isn't through corporate handouts," she told Fox in July. "As Americans suffer from the worst inflation in 40 years, this legislation doesn't ensure that our best asset—our innovation—won't be funneled back to help Communist China. That's a bad deal for the American people."

So, on the one hand, she doesn't want corporate welfare, which is good. On the other hand, she's itching for a trade war with China, which is bad for consumers (and most definitely not a way to fight inflation).

Haley's Republican conservativism trends pretty mainstream—she is very opposed to abortion and favors strong borders with heavy police enforcement of immigration policies. As governor of South Carolina, she signed a bill that created an immigration enforcement unit and required police to check the citizenship of anybody they stopped to make sure they were in the country legally. The law also mandates that private employers use the flawed E-Verify system to prove that people they hire are legally in the country, putting her in good company with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, with whom she may compete in the race for the Republican nomination.

As for some of the other culture war populism that has animated both the left and the right, Haley opposes the teaching of critical race theory in schools and has called for every governor in the country to ban funding for its teaching. But she supports school choice and parents' rights to provide their kids the education that they want. She, like DeSantis, is stumbling into the conservative populist contradiction of refusing to consider that some parents support teaching their children subjects Haley doesn't approve of.

As for LGBT issues that might come up in the primary, in 2016 as governor she said South Carolina didn't need a bill proposed by Republican lawmakers mandating that people use the public restrooms that match the sex listed on their birth certificates. But she opposes letting trans women compete in sports alongside other women and has complained about "woke culture" weakening the military in some vague fashion.

Her former boss, Trump, is so far the only Republican to formally announce a run for the presidency. He responded to her plans with a post on Truth Social that "Nikki has to follow her heart, not her honor. She should definitely run!" He included a clip of Haley from 2021 from a press conference where she said that she would not run for president if Trump ran.

Nikki Haley is a bigot. No wonder she figures she would be an attractive candidate among right-wingers.

If she isn’t capable of turning the rest of the nation into a cultural war victor paradise like Chicago, she should not be allowed to run.

South Carolina is an uneducated, bigoted, desolate culture war casualty, still closer to the Confederacy's traitors, bigots, and losers than to modern America -- and it's Nikki Haley Country!

Um – sounds good, as far as it goes. But even if she thinks that, she lacks the spine to back it up. I’d rate her chances of being the Republican nominee for president at 0.001% greater than my own. She doesn’t bring much to the table as another candidate’s “running mate”, either. It’s very unlikely that I’d vote for the Democrat for president in 2024, but Nikki as the Republican candidate could be the catalyst for just that.

China Spy Balloon over Montana. The $1T a year Pentagon has been tracking it for days before it entered US airspace. But I suppose all our Ground to Air missiles were sent to Ukraine so the Neocon Globalists who control our Foreign Policy can get back at the Czar for what he did to their people 150 years ago. It is always about that with those folks..old world grudges.

Since Corn Pop has too much invested in Hunter's dealings with China I advise the great Gov of Montana to call up his Air National Guard..get some F15s in the air and shoot the Tik Tok Spy Balloon down..Corn Pop might be a coward and degenerate, but real American is waking up...Russia isn't the enemy...the bolshies who have taken over DC are

She spent years with her nose up Trump's ass, supporting and appeasing Trump and his worthless, un-American supporters. That is most of what makes her a national figure, the figurative fellating of the bigoted, downscale MAGA movement.

      1. Chumby   2 years ago

While Biden, the current big guy, is given a free pass Reason spends its time focusing on someone that will not get the nomination. They will also use the article as a vehicle to continue their Trump obsession.

The top male chess players score about 200 FIDE points ahead of the top women players. Why? Wikipedia to the rescue:

"Chess players, both men and women, have speculated on the reasons behind the gap in chess achievements by women compared to men. Some women players believe the major reason is due to cultural expectations and bias. Jennifer Shahade, a FIDE Woman Grandmaster and the women's program director at the United States Chess Federation (USCF), said there is a large drop-off of girls at the USCF around the ages of 12 and 13, which she attributes to the lack of a social network for girls that age in chess.[13] Polgár said that society and some parents may weaken the desire of young female chess players to improve,[14] and that women were often held back by lower ambition by choosing to compete in all-women tournaments rather than open tournaments.[15] Jovanka Houska, an International Master and Woman Grandmaster, argued that overconfidence by boys gives an advantage over girls.[16]

In a 2007 study at the University of Padua, male and female players of similar ability were matched up with each other on online games. When the players were unaware of their opponent's sex, female players won slightly under half their games. When female players were told their opponent was male, they played less aggressively, and they won about one in four games. However, when female players were told their opponent was female, even though they were actually male, they were as aggressive as the male players and won about one in two games. The researchers argued that gender stereotypes may have led female players to lower their self-esteem and self-confidence when they know they are playing male players, causing them to play defensively which worsened their performance.[17][15]

Some male players have commented on women's performance in chess. In a 1963 interview, Bobby Fischer was dismissive of female players, calling them "terrible" and said it was because "[women] are not so smart".[18] In 2015, Nigel Short argued that male players performed better because men and women were "hard-wired" for different skills,[19] which was met with controversy.[20] In 2022, Ilya Smirin, while broadcasting live during the ninth round of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2022-23, said that chess was "maybe not for women", and also praised a woman for playing like a man.[21] FIDE apologized through Twitter and called Smirin's comments embarrasing and offensive. The same day FIDE fired Smirin for making "offensive remarks".[22]"

Nigel Short's book on his tournament with Gary Kasparov mentions how exhausting a tournament, a game a day for a few weeks, can be. Physically and emotionally.

Is there a point to all this?

"Is there a point to all this?"

I'm glad you asked. You see, the top men chess players score about 200 point above the top women players. Why? People have tried to answer in various ways. Wikipedia gives us some of their explanations.

            1. mtrueman   2 years ago

It seems to depend to some extent on whether the play is online or over the board, in which women perhaps suffer a psychological disadvantage. The burning question is whether this psychological disadvantage is manifest against a transexual opponent.

There doesn't seem to be much difference between men and women in shooting and archery. Even at times giving an advantage to women. (I heard the words 'low center of gravity' bandied about.) Diana, Roman goddess of the hunt, is traditionally depicted with a bow and arrow. (The Korean women's Olympic archery team were national heroines.)

Important caveat: I'm referring to shooting as a sport. Mass shootings like Sandy Hook etc are perpetrated by men and women are not involved.

          3. n00bdragon   2 years ago

I'm inclined to agree with Judit Polgar that the existence of women's brackets for purely intellectual activities (like chess) are belittling and self-reinforcing. A man choosing to compete in a women's weightlifting competition is ruining the integrity of the sport, but a man choosing to compete in a women's chess tournament is just insulting himself (his opponents have already insulted themselves by participating as well). Men and women are built differently, their brains are built differently even, but there's nothing to suggest that women are simply not capable of various intellectual or dexterity-based activities and those that settle for a lower standard of excellence than men demean themselves.

            1. mtrueman   2 years ago

"I’m inclined to agree with Judit Polgar that the existence of women’s brackets for purely intellectual activities (like chess) are belittling and self-reinforcing. "

I tend to agree, though Short has a point that no competition is 'purely intellectual.' There is also psychology and stamina and the ability to focus.

"but a man choosing to compete in a women’s chess tournament is just insulting himself "

Comedian Andy Kaufman, billing himself as the world champion of men wrestling women, made a living at it for a while.

"but there’s nothing to suggest that women are simply not capable of various intellectual or dexterity-based activities"

There's a lot to indicate this.

            3. Social Justice is neither   2 years ago

My understanding is that all male endeavors are actually coed and women's brackets exist either for physical disparity or to increase participation by women leaving out cultural sex mixing taboos.

Are they demeaning, maybe but they also serve a purpose overall. If the segregation is physical the trans thing should be a non-starter, if it's for inclusion then whatever.

      2. Chumby   2 years ago

Do trans chess sets have two queens?

        1. Unicorn Abattoir   2 years ago

All of the pieces are queens.

      3. Rossami   2 years ago

That's probably part of it. Another big part of it is that almost any measured attribute will plot on a bell curve - and the bell curve for biological men is almost always wider than the curve for biological women. In other words, even though men and women have almost identical average intelligence, there are more extremely smart men than women and extremely stupid men than women. There are more extremely tall men - and extremely short men. More men than can jump extremely long distances and more men that can't jump at all. More extreme extroverts - and more extreme introverts.

The leading causal argument is that these are at least partially linked to X-chromosome influenced traits. A man, having only one X-chromosome, gains the benefit or suffers the penalty from whatever that one roll of the die happens to be. A woman, by contrast, feels the effect of two X-chromosomes which are (to a very crude approximation and oversimplification) averaged together. A man rolls a die and has a 1-in-6 chance of getting a six. A woman rolls two die, averages the result, and has a 1-in-36 chance of getting a six - fully six times less likely, but is also six times less likely to get a one.

        1. mtrueman   2 years ago

"More men than can jump extremely long distances and more men that can’t jump at all."

Seems so unfair. Men win both the jumping competition and the not jumping at all competition.

          1. Zeb   2 years ago

And also the going to prison competition and the dying in stupid ways competition and the getting killed in work accidents competition and the being completely mentally retarded competition. Life is so hard on women these days.

Yup. The X-chromosome hypothesis explains why developmental issues are more common in male than in female embryos. and why with the exception of autoimmune disorders, women tend to have better response to disease. (A possible reason for the autoimmune disorder exception may be that on occasion, the two X chromosomes, in effect, regard the other as "foreign" - but biologists aren't sure of the reason.)

  16. Zeb   2 years ago

She, like DeSantis, is stumbling into the conservative populist contradiction of refusing to consider that some parents support teaching their children subjects Haley doesn't approve of.

Is that what they are doing? Or is it just that public schools can't please everyone and should stay away from subjects that are hugely controversial?
Some parents also support teaching children that black people are inherently inferior, or that accepting Jesus into your heart is the only path to salvation. But I'm pretty sure very few people think those are appropriate subjects to be taught in public schools.

    1. Gaear Grimsrud   2 years ago

Last I checked parents can teach their kids anything they want. The issue is whether the government should teach children CRT racism. Not seeing the contradiction. There is nothing libertarian about teaching children that their skin color determines there worth. In fact it is the opposite. That Reason continues to pimp for this shit is appalling.

      1. Zeb   2 years ago

Yeah, I have no idea where they are seeing a contradiction there. Government is deciding the curriculum either way. I honestly don't think libertarian principle has anything to say about the validity of teaching CRT racism one way or another. But as long as there are public schools it is absolutely a valid topic for public debate and I certainly hope it comes down on the side of not teaching any brand of racism or radical social theory.

        1. Nardz   2 years ago

" I honestly don’t think libertarian principle has anything to say about the validity of teaching CRT racism one way or another"

          Yikes!

        2. Social Justice is neither   2 years ago

CRT racism is absolutely a violation of libertarian principles in exactly the same way KKK racism is. Neither has a place as public school teaching or the praxis that applies history to the current audience. It's one thing to talk about the history of reconstruction USA and groups like the KKK's part in that even in gory detail, CRT racism makes the current audience complicit in the crimes of history.

          1. Elmer Fudd the CHUD   2 years ago

            KKK- antagonistic
            CRT- paternalistic

Both are racist to the core.

    2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   2 years ago (edited)

Yeah, like it’s a “conservative contradiction” that there might be subject matter floating about the ether that [Haley] doesn’t approve of. If that’s our metric, stop the world, I want to get off.

Oh which reminds me, “The dark history of jewish money-lending” will be taught next semester… sign up while there’s still room!

      2. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Is it or is it not a conservative principle that parents should be the ones to decide what subject matter their children learn? If so, where soes "subject matter ... that [Haley] doesn't approve of" enter into that equation?

Will she or Gretchen Whitmer get more of the wine mom vote is the question. If the donkey party nominates anyone other than Whitmer and Haley is the GOP pick, Haley wins.

    2. Elmer Fudd the CHUD   2 years ago

  20. Naime Bond   2 years ago

No need to run. She'll get the same 1% if she walks.

  21. Nobartium   2 years ago

As a neo-con in proud standing, there simply isn't any constituency left in the GOP for her. As a R, no D will ever vote for her, viewing her as a traitor to women and her race.

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago (edited)

The neocons love her because they think they can use the ca. 2005 “Dems R Da Reel Sexists/Raycists” card if she gets the nomination. They still haven’t figured out that accusing the left of hypocrisy is pointless because deliberate hypocrisy, aka repressive tolerance, is a cornerstone of their ideology.

    2. Social Justice is neither   2 years ago

This isn't true, plenty of Republicans see it as America's right to be the global arbiters of what is right. Now if that's all she has it won't win but you're fooling yourself if you think a neocon revival in the GOP isn't possible, it just takes the right marketing of the "right" wars.

  22. Brandybuck   2 years ago

Not my favorite Republican, but a Haley versus Trump or a Haley versus DeSantis, Haley comes out on top by a huge margin. And she would wipe the floor with either Biden or Harris.

    1. Chumby   2 years ago

      Polls suggest otherwise.

  24. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

Like I posted about her yesterday, Haley's an empty suit who's only getting attention because she makes neocon hearts go aflutter. Unlike DeSantis, she also benefitted from being governor of an extremely red state with very little political risk for her decisions.

Arthur L. Hicklib's typical partisan bitchery aside, if the left isn't scared of her, it's because they know she'll roll over at the slightest bit of pushback. She needs to show she's willing to take a giant crap on the media to get any traction with the GOP base, especially after that CJR article that got released yesterday.

  25. Jerry B.   2 years ago

She needs to do a blood test and find that she has both African and Native American ancestors. It'd be fun to see how the Democrats manage to criticize a Black, Indian, Woman. And maybe Haley could identify as a man.

  26. COINTELPRO   2 years ago

Trump made a promise to God, under his constitutional Oath of Office to NOT violate the U.S. Constitution - so they both lied! Trump’s lie seems way worse.

Under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment (Disqualification Clause) Trump is disqualified from ever running again. All we are missing is a “cop on the beat” to enforce the 14th Amendment. So far there are none to be found.

  27. Moderation4ever   2 years ago

Both Haley and DeSantis have shown competence in an executive office, so while I may disagree with some of their policies, they are a step up from the former President. They are a step up from both the former and current President in that they are younger than me, and I like that fact. What I would like both Haley and DeSantis to do is to get away from culture and instead focus on important policy issues. I think the national debt is more important than drag queens.

    1. Vernon Depner   2 years ago

A bellicose, interventionist foreign policy would be very hard for me to overlook. Nothing stands in the way of libertarian aspirations like keeping the country on a constant war footing.

      1. Moderation4ever   2 years ago

I don't think anyone would disagree with your concerns and that is why policy matters. America is a superpower. The American people enjoy that status, but also must understand that comes with responsibilities. The question that must be asked is how the candidate sees our country's responsibilities and how their foreign policy would reflect their views.

I would like to see a foreign policy heavier on diplomacy and building alliances, rather than through confrontations. Intervention through alliances and support, rather than direct military support. I think the Biden administration is doing a relatively good job here and for the current time, I would assess any candidate's policy relative to that policy.

        1. Elmer Fudd the CHUD   2 years ago

So you’re an opponent of the current administration?
