Twitter Files: Employees Knew the Media's Favorite Russian Bots List Was Fake

"I think we need to just call this out on the bullshit it is."

The Alliance for Securing Democracy (ASD) is a nonprofit organization that leverages the purported expertise of former U.S. national intelligence officials to identify Russian influence on social media. Its advisory council includes the neoconservative writer Bill Kristol, Hillary Clinton campaign official John Podesta, and various former employees of national security agencies.

ASD maintains Hamilton 68, a dashboard that monitors the accounts of 600 Twitter accounts alleged to be Russian bots. The dashboard was highly regarded by the mainstream media: Favorable coverage of ASD's work appeared in Politico ("The Russian Bots Are Coming. This Bipartisan Duo Is On It."), The Washington Post ("Russia-linked accounts are tweeting their support of embattled Fox News host Laura Ingraham"), and elsewhere.

But according to new revelations uncovered by independent journalist Matt Taibbi as part of the Twitter Files, the accounts on ASD's list weren't Russian bots. Moreover, Twitter content moderators knew the list was inaccurate but were reluctant to criticize it due to fears of bad press.

Indeed, Taibbi published screenshots of several emails that show Twitter's former trust and safety czar, Yoel Roth, discovering the list was wrong. The dashboard "falsely accuses a bunch of legitimate right-leaning accounts of being Russian bots," he wrote. "I think we need to just call this out on the bullshit it is."

3."Falsely accuses a bunch of legitimate right-leaning accounts of being Russian bots." pic.twitter.com/EHRWACkZu4

— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) January 27, 2023

Ultimately, Roth did not publicly denounce the list as bullshit—in part because other Twitter employees dissuaded him. "We have to be careful in how much we push back on ASD publicly," said one communications official.

Taibbi notes that several of the officials who advised against a public confrontation with ASD eventually left Twitter to work for Democratic political figures.

This is all extremely damning. An organization with ties to the U.S. national security apparatus falsely portrayed a bunch of mostly right-leaning, Trump-supporting Twitter content as nefarious and Russian in origin. The mainstream media eagerly peddled this incorrect narrative. And Twitter wavered on pushing back because elite sentiment was so disposed to imagine Russian operatives hiding behind every curtain.

Corbin O’Brian to Edward Snowden, “Only approved people can know the truth”.

As with every conspiracy the vast majority of “approved people” only know a little piece, their “bit part” of the conspiracy.

It’s apparently easier to commit a “little” lie, leaving the compiling of the false narrative to the few who play bigger roles in the conspiracy.

Years late, really. The tone is pretty soft as well, especially considering that Robby pushed the Russia hoax as well.
It would be nice if Reason would fully cover the Twitter files and expand into how the same thing goes on in most media and other social media platforms. It would be nice if they at least mentioned that these things are almost always directed at harming the right while supporting the establishment/left. It would be nice if they could muster some of the outrage the constantly show towards conservatives in order to condemn the collusion of government and media to violate the first amendment. Unfortunately, I don't see any of this happening

KMG also said in defense of Twitter's previous management that “a highly censored private platform is a good part of free speech”. This was already after we knew that Twitter censorship had at least some government involvement.

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliance_for_Securing_Democracy

The Alliance for Securing Democracy (ASD) is a non-partisan transatlantic national security advocacy group formed in July 2017 with the stated aim of countering efforts by Russia to undermine democratic institutions in the United States and Europe.[1][2][3] As of 2021, it had expanded to combating the malign influence of the Chinese and Iranian governments and their state-backed media outlets.[4][5][6][7][8]

The organization is chaired and run primarily by former senior United States intelligence and State Department officials.[9] Its daily operations are led by Zack Cooper, a research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Laura Thornton, formerly of International IDEA, joined the group as its new director in May of 2021.[10][11] Laura Rosenberger, senior director for China on the Biden administration's National Security Council was previously involved.[7] The ASD is housed at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and pursues its work in both the United States and Europe.[3]

The ASD publishes an online dashboard called "Hamilton 2.0" showing the activity of Twitter accounts that the organization claims are linked to Russian propaganda.

    3. A Cynical Asshole   2 years ago

@MotherJones did over a dozen Hamilton 68 stories and I bet they won’t even comment.

First they would have to have something approaching the capacity to feel shame.

      1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

Progressives, feel shame? Surely you must be joking. These assholes are still running the Hamilton 68 website (see my comment below).

    4. Elmer Fudd the CHUD   2 years ago (edited)

Cam we all agree that we no longer have a free president in this country, and that all those organizations are basically Marxist propaganda fronts? If so, how do we go about getting rid of them?

      1. Granite   2 years ago

Bro that ship sailed 22 years ago. You’re not getting rid of anything anymore. But you still have a couple choices left: you can kys now, or you can be jailed and tortured and the they will kys.

28.What makes this an important story is the sheer scale of the news footprint left by Hamilton 68’s digital McCarthyism. The quantity of headlines and TV segments dwarfs the impact of individual fabulists like Jayson Blair or Stephen Glass.

        1. DesigNate   2 years ago

It wasn’t McCarthyism, it was just straight psyops.

All roads eventually lead back to George Soros and his Open Society Foundation.

The OSF has funded the German Marshall Fund of the United States, which in turn has funded the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

    https://www.influencewatch.org/non-profit/german-marshall-fund-of-the-united-states/

GMF is heavily funded by the American, German, and Swedish governments. [6] Aside from governmental funding, GMF has also accepted donations from several left-of-center grantmaking organizations, including the Democracy Fund, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and the Open Society Foundations. [7] Though most of GMF’s work is nonpartisan, several organization members have taken strong stances against President Donald Trump, accusing him of “imitating” Chinese aggression using “manipulation of information and bullying tactics.”

    1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

And the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

      https://www.influencewatch.org/non-profit/alliance-for-securing-democracy/

The Alliance for Securing Democracy is a project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the German Marshall Fund is a think tank founded in 1972 that is committed to strengthening international ties between the United States and Europe. [1] Created in 2017, [2] the Alliance for Securing Democracy develops strategies and programs to deter autocratic efforts to undermine democratic values across the globe.

    2. Utkonos   2 years ago

      Bullying tactics, huh?

  19. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

Here's the actual Hamilton 68 page.

    https://securingdemocracy.gmfus.org/hamilton-68-a-new-tool-to-track-russian-disinformation-on-twitter/

    And their claims:

The Hamilton 68 dashboard, launching today as part of the Alliance for Securing Democracy, provides a near real-time look at Russian propaganda and disinformation efforts online. The top of the page shows tweets from official Russian propaganda outlets in English, and a short post discussing the themes of the day. This is Russia’s overt messaging.

We are not telling you what to think, but we believe you should know when someone is trying to manipulate you. What you do with that information is up to you.

What utter bullshit. Hamilton 68 is trying to tell us what to think and manipulate everyone they can.

    1. Super Scary   2 years ago

"We are not telling you what to think, but we believe you should know when someone is trying to manipulate you. What you do with that information is up to you."

      These people are shameless.

Lead with your weakness. Just like the fbi did regarding election meddling. They meddled when they brought up Hillary’s emails the night before the election. That was the only meddling going on, but they were quick to point to the big bad wolf to keep our eyes off the obvious.

        1. Truthfulness   2 years ago

Read the Twitter Files, the FBI colluded with Twitter to suppress the Hunter Biden story. That's what actual election meddling is.

  20. Flaco   2 years ago

Hmmm, a group made up of former US intelligence officials making false claims that something that favors conservatives is planted by Russians...it's Hunter Biden Laptop all over again.

  23. TJJ2000   2 years ago

Summary; If you don't support the Democratic (National Sozialist)Nazi-Movement and mention words like "US Constitution" or Hillary Clinton is bad; then you are a treasonous Russian-bot trying to destroy "our democracy" whether you're a US Citizen or not.

The "Russian" part of the equation was just a BS-Lie/Excuse to justify the prosecution and censorship of U.S. Citizens.

  24. Jerry B.   2 years ago

For some reason, the Washington Post is not covering this. Wonder why.

    1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

That's concerning. The WaPo rushing to declaim or trying to hide shit is usually the best indicator that a story is true.

  25. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

So the Paul Pelosi videos were released today. There's a few commenters here who said the broken window was staged and looked like someone breaking it from the inside. I wonder how they'll respond to the videos that clearly show the guy with the hammer breaking in.

I honestly don't know why they waited this long to release that video. It looks like almost exactly what officers said it was. Looks like a crazy broke into the home and threatened Paul with a hammer and he made an awkward hostage-esque phone call.

    1. Sevo   2 years ago

"...There’s a few commenters here who said the broken window was staged and looked like someone breaking it from the inside..."

Never claimed it was staged, but that the explanations didn't even match the drone pics on the SF news coverage. Still have a pic on the desktop with the glass all over the brick porch(?) outside the glass doors and none visible inside.
Added to the documented fact that Pelosi is every bit as honest as Obo, she is not due the benefit of doubt.

      1. Sevo   2 years ago (edited)

“I wonder how they’ll respond to the videos that clearly show the guy with the hammer breaking in.”
        Just watched this vid: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=paul+pelosi+body+cam+footage&docid=20724076973740&mid=4E2D08EF0914FA96C5EA4E2D08EF0914FA96C5EA&view=detail&FORM=VIRE
Don’t see anything of anyone “breaking in”. Got a cite for your claim?
If a whacko broke into my home and the cops showed up at the door, I'm out that door in a New York minute, screaming for the cops to grab the whacko.
        See any of that?
My goodness, what an 'accepting mind' we have here!

    2. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

"I wonder how they’ll respond to the videos that clearly show the guy with the hammer breaking in."

Can you link to that? because I watched everything I could find and didn't see that.

"Looks like a crazy broke into the home and threatened Paul with a hammer and he made an awkward hostage-esque phone call."

Paul Pelosi and the guy were both obviously high as kites in the video.

      1. Sevo   2 years ago

I have no idea regarding A Thinking Mind['s] agenda, but regarding A Thinking Mind['s] agenda, honesty ain't part of it.
Seems A Thinking Mind hopes we buy into some bullshit absent evidence.
You have earned a rep, A Thinking Mind, and it's one you won't really like. You are a bullshiter.

    3. Sevo   2 years ago

BTW, I also notice you offered no cites to support your claims. Anyone capable of thinking would have done so; not you.
Care to explain why someone with a handle "A Thinking Mind" would be so idiotic, or...

    4. Nardz   2 years ago

Looks like Paul Pelosi is a complete piece of shit who participates in our rulers raping the shit out of us, so I'm not sure wtf your point is.

  26. Sevo   2 years ago

Robby, perhaps you need a 2X4 to get the attention of the other Reason writers. It seems that no others find government management of news in order to benefit one candidate in a presidential election isn't of importance.

  27. CindyF   2 years ago

"This is all extremely damning. An organization with ties to the U.S. national security apparatus falsely portrayed a bunch of mostly right-leaning, Trump-supporting Twitter content as nefarious and Russian in origin. "

Wait until Robby finds out what the same people falsely accused President Trump of doing as "nefarious and Russian in origin".

    1. Utkonos   2 years ago

The only thing that would calm him down is another opportunity to do PR for Fauci

  28. Muzzled Woodchipper   2 years ago

Since hard evidence has been definitively shown that Twitter execs knew the list was bullshit, I eagerly await libel suits. They knew the labeling certain accounts as Russian bots was false, yet allowed it to be pedaled anyways.

    1. Sevo   2 years ago

      Damages? Certainly Trump.
I'm far more in favor of criminal charges.
We have agents of the federal government involved in management of the news, attempting to affect the outcome of a presidential election.
There should be felony charges here.

      1. Michael Ejercito   2 years ago

It could be done with creative interpretations of campaign finance laws.

        What would be the downside?

  29. Sequel   2 years ago

The fact that former intelligence officials were involved in creating fake news about nonexistent Russian influence is very serious. These people appear on TV stations constantly to beat the drums for war and to pose as "experts", but never reveal who is paying them, or why.

The worst part is that this story demonstrates that they knowingly lie in order to influence elections.

  30. Livemike   2 years ago

Just the fact that it was from former intelligence officers should have been the first clue it was BS.

  31. Kuni   2 years ago

During the McCarthy Era, Joe would appear on a podium holding a piece of paper or an envelope, and declare that he was holding a list of x number of names of Communists working in the Y Department.

The news media went wild with this PR sport. Objective journalism flew out the window, and inane gossip became headline news. With Hamilton 68 and ASD, Journalism entered the McCarthy II Era.

I'm enjoying this newfound interest in radical transparency for private companies. Which industry do we get to go after next? How about News Corp.

  37. Tony   2 years ago

Perversely, one of the biggest shields that Taibbi, Greenwald, and Snowden have to protect themselves from accusations of being Russian assets is the sheer obviousness that they are Russian assets. Why would Russia do this so hamfistedly? But then think about how they're waging war.

Taibbi lived in Moscow and has made it the biggest "journalistic" crusade of his career to complain that some mainstream media outlets might have characterized Trump's connections with Russia a little too strongly for his taste. It's just bizarre. It makes no sense except as a blunt attempt to downplay those connections and propagandize a conspiracy theory. Of course it works like a charm on most of you people.

Snowden stole a vast amount of US secrets and absconded with them to where he is now a newly minted Russian citizen. Also, conveniently, he has apparently retired from the "criticizing his own government for spying at all costs" business.

Greenwald is such an embarrassing FOX News drone he's scarcely worth mentioning.

If I were Russia I'd be boasting about all the success I'd had in espionage with little more than some gum and string. They got a whole fucking president installed and their enemy perpetually coming apart at the seams because of Facebook memes. Maybe even they underestimated the stupidity of the American right.

The left is typically sincere in its use of epithets, redefined, and made-up words, right racist? It is much easier to stop debate by name-calling, rather than engage in logic-based discussion, and the ends justify the means don't-cha-know. And of course the right does this too, but to a lesser extent.

Google pays an hourly wage of $100. My most recent online earnings for a 40-hour work week were $3500. According to my younger brother’s acquaintance, he works cs-02 roughly 30 hours each week and earns an average of $12,265. I’m in awe of how simple things once were.
