E.U. Rules Will Force Dutch To Ban Livestock Farming
A 2019 court ruling has begun to force Dutch farmers out of business—by design.

Dutch livestock farmers are increasingly outraged and bewildered over a court ruling that has begun to force thousands of them out of the business—by design.
In 2019, the High Council of the Netherlands, the country's supreme judicial authority, ruled* that a 2015 system of permitting new nitrogen-emitting projects by requiring nitrogen offsets failed to meet emission limits agreed to by all European Union members. The High Council ruling responded to the verdict in a 2016 lawsuit that Dutch environmental activists filed before the E.U. Court of Justice, in which the plaintiffs claimed that the Netherlands had failed to protect European Union Natura 2000 zones from nitrogen runoff.
The High Council stopped nearly all new construction permitting in the Netherlands–including farm expansions. Since then, Dutch farmers have been locked in a regulatory battle with the Dutch government over whether the country's incredibly dense animal husbandry sector can continue to be the largest meat exporter in the E.U.
The answer appears to be "no."
In June, the Dutch government introduced a plan, costing tens of billions of dollars, to "radically" reduce the number of livestock raised in the country by more than 35 million by 2030. The plan includes "paying some Dutch livestock farmers to relocate or exit the industry, and helping others transition to more extensive (as opposed to intensive) methods of farming, with fewer animals and a bigger area of land."
The plan has sparked "fury" among Dutch farmers, as well as more protests.
"This proud farming nation is under immense pressure to make radical changes to cut harmful emissions, and some farmers fear their livelihoods will be obliterated," the BBC reported this past summer, one of several times Dutch farmers have taken to the streets.
"I am a land owner, so a critical question is whether the government are allowed to push farmers out of the land," dairy farmer and Dutch young farmers' union member Marije Klever told the Guardian in December. "It can't be The Hague telling farmers they must go, you need an agreement."
"It can't be." It shouldn't be. But it is.
Livestock farming and meat consumption are clearly under attack from climate activists. This past autumn, as I detailed in a column, the Dutch city of Haarlem banned meat advertisements to combat climate change. Months later, students at a public university in Scotland voted to prohibit the sale of meat on the school's campus for the same reason. And in a column earlier this month, I highlighted a new study that pushes for the inclusion of climate "warning labels" on foods containing red meat.
A Guardian report this week suggests the same fate ultimately could be in the cards for farmers in the United States as well. "Have we reached 'peak meat,' like peak oil: so much livestock, so much local pollution, that the only sustainable future is in reduction?" the paper wonders. "They're questions the US, the world's largest producer of beef, will also soon have to answer."
However, the Dutch are famous for their agricultural innovation. As The Washington Post noted last year, the Netherlands supplies food to most of Western Europe–both meat and produce–from a land area the size of Maryland. The country's greenhouses can produce vegetables using a fraction of the water needed for outdoor growing operations.
Those greenhouses also use less fertilizer, which leaves chicken, cow, and pig farmers with more manure than they know what to do with. That idle excrement, in turn, has produced an abundance of nitrogen that washes into and alters non-agricultural ecosystems, such as the Natura 2000 zones that E.U. member states have agreed to protect.
Hence, the Netherlands is eschewing its rich history of agricultural innovation to instead reduce the amount of animal husbandry in the country. But why not spend some of the billions set aside to pay Dutch farmers to give up on beef and use it to work with those same farmers to gather, treat, and ship the country's excess manure to Angola, which was briefly a Dutch colony? Angola's fertilizer shortage—of which manure is an effective and natural example—has threatened crop harvests and exacerbated poverty and hunger for millions of people there. People living in other poor countries with fertilizer deficits could benefit, too, if other countries with excess fertilizer (including the United States) took the same approach.
Pollution is a problem. Banning meat is not the answer to those problems.
*CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article mistakenly claimed that the Dutch government's plan to reduce animal husbandry was to reduce methane to comply with a High Council ruling about greenhouse gas emissions. The article text has been updated throughout to clarify that the 2019 ruling in question concerned excessive nitrogen levels in and around European Union Natura 2000 zones.

But don't worry. Rich environmentalists who show up at Davos and other feel-good soirees will have their Wagyu beef flown in from Japan on special chartered jets.
All such international events where any international elitist expresses concern about the climate or carbon or sustainability should require all attendees to produce zero carbon on the way to the event and back.
No more private jets, black SUVs, private helicopters or yachts.
Only sailboats, hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing to get there.
Private rickshaw service would be acceptable, depending on what the person pulling the rickshaw had for lunch.
And their skin color.

All their food must be cooked using electricity that's certified to be from non-emitting sources. In fact, all electricity they use must be from that type of source. Anyone belching or farting will be ejected, and all their belongings confiscated and shipped by sailboat to some poor people. No smoking, of course. No working fireplaces. All clothing must be made from natural, renewable materials by workers who are unionized and paid at least 200% of the average wage of their country. Every participant must spend two hours a day on a pedal-powered electric generator.

We need exemptions for ideological belches and brain farts.
I recall an EV only event where diesel generators were brought in to charge the vehicle batteries.
The Fast Lane Truck had a road. Trip test of an EB where they took a generator with them.

Steakholders not wanting to go Dutch have a beef with this.
That's a load of bull.
Don’t have a cow, man.
Let's just meat when we get to it is happening but it is a good thing.
Meat and milk producers, MOOOOOOOVE on over, and make way for eco-efficient crickets!
(Yet when I try and drum up enthusiasm for cricket drumsticks, all that I hear is… Crickets! For Jiminy Cricket’s sake, people!)
I'm going to start the concern trolling for the crickets, since no one else will. Ethical insectarians should insist that any crickets raised for human consumption be raised in humane conditions -- at least one cubic meter for each cricket to move about in, with fresh water delivered by eye-dropper at least 3 times per day.
What about top hats?
If Jiminy Cricket will eat his top hat, first, before I eat Jiminy Cricket, that's even better yet! Yet MORE pre-digested and digestible fiber in my diet!
Or a little wooden boy to keep them company.
Especially the termites. Woodism is a real problem ignored by the plasticites.
If a little wooden boy dies, his decomposing corpse generates methane.
Fair-wage, free-range crickets!!! Gluten-free, organic, low-plutonium crickets!!! Yummy in my tummy!!!
Remember, squirrels are meat dishes too, although in your case, the stew might taste crappy.
Burgoo is good stew, except when there's too many burrs in the goo!
The EU will discover one day that crickets poop, too.

Are the Dutch so cowed as to take this? Most outrageous thing I’ve herd.
Apparently it's their duty.
If the Dutch give Van Damn, Corrie needs to pull out the Ten-Gauge Boom-Boom.

What Hiding Place did you pull THAT one out of?
I sure hope that some brave little Dutch boys have the courage to stick their fingers in the dikes-dykes of world-destroying methane-containing cow farts, but I really-really do NOT want to see videos of it-shit! (I'm trying to EAT here!)
Both books and film. The Eighties were especially fun in the school auditorium, since someone would always yell out: "DON'T GO OUT THAT DOOR, ANNE! DEM NAT-ZAY MO-FOS GWINE'A GIT CHU!"

OK, so maybe we should let Russia take over Europe after all - - - - - -
In many ways, that would be liberating for ordinary people.
You're shitting me, right? With a GDP the size of Italy, Russians are already at the bug-eating phase and Putin doesn't care if they're happy.
No, I'm thinking about the scope and depth of regulations in the EU vs. Russia.
The E.U. does it by regulation. Putin does it by diktat. Distinction without difference. I sure don't see any Libertarian tourism packages heading in either direction.
What legislation? The E.U. is nothing more than another version of the Supreme Soviet. They do, however, take orders directly from the Davos Dildo crowd..
The 1992 Habitats Directive, implementing the 1979 Bern Convention? Which, I believe, was passed by all Member States unanimously (and acceded to by every new Member State since).
That legislation?

The only difference between the Soviet Union and the EU is that Russia had an army.

Yeah, the last time I made a pun like that I got cussed out by someone with Turrets Syndrome!

Once again, I think we need to divide the world. Let's give Europe to progressives, socialists, and nanny-authoritarians. Asia can host a few totalitarian nations. African and South America can be themselves. And North America is only for people who prioritize personal liberty, autonomy, and responsibility and prefer minimalist government.
It's already been done. Remember the Iron Curtain? The problem is that there are freedom-lovers in socialist nations, and socialists in freedom-loving nations. It's not like politics is hereditary.
That's why we will have an annual sorting.
Know who else sorted people by politics?
The French?
Hogwarts?
Which house were the libertarians in?
Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality answers that and many more questions. Ever thought the wizards' money was wide open to arbitrage? Ever though Quidditch scoring was a bit ... stupid? Ever thought it would be interesting to run double blind tests on spells and incantations, or why broomsticks didn't follow Newton's Laws?
One particularly obnoxious poli sci professor at my university when it came to the seating arrangement in his class?
Was he going for a model legislature thing?
No, he just made conservatives sit on the right, liberals sit on the left and centrists sit in the middle. He did have a favorite section of the class as well….
I steered well clear of his courses.
Didn't want to be corralled in a bullpen, eh?
🙂
Libertarians clearly need not apply. (Boo friggin hoo!)
Gasden Libertarians could audit the course and just slither around the radiator pipe.
You?
Mitt Romney? He had binders full of women.
Not stables, to continue the bovine punnery?
🙂
I think we’ve milked the beef puns dry. But back to these binders full of women: is this a #Meatoo thing?
Romney put his Mitt where it shouldn't be on the folds of paper and tripped over his tongue describing them as binders, but no actual binding of actual women took place. This was a prelude to the #MeToo lynching bee.
The "No Labels" political movement?
Reason commenters?
You mean like the 6 trillion dollar minimalist government we have now? The most expensive in human history?
Er, no.
I was also thinking if "North America" is going to "prioritize personal liberty, autonomy, and responsibility", we're going to have to do something about Mexico and Canada, in addition to the Left Coast, first.
How does shipping the manure someplace else solve the “environmental concerns”?
Get Green! We can feed the manure to bugs or eat it ourselves.
It honestly doesn’t, but everything about this is a bunch of people using shallow knowledge to balance contrived accounting ledgers. The theory (I stress theory) here is that various things lead meat production to be climate-change positive (in a bad way).
Assuming that you can produce meat/plants without fossil fuels (a big assumption), one would think that meat production is neutral to climate change. You pull CO2 out of the air into feedstock, which then gets fed to tasty, tasty animals. When those animals poop and are consumed, and carbon is released back into the atmosphere, you haven’t added any carbon back into the cycle.
However, the problem is that the process of making meat converts the CO2 to a more potent greenhouse gas, methane. As manure is left to decompose, it releases the methane, which people argue is 20 – 84x the warming power of CO2 (more on that huge range in a second).
But this is all bullshit (Hah!).
First, Methane is seen as a problem largely because of the way we count greenhouse gases. Methane is actually in the atmosphere only for about 10 years, where it is trapping far more heat. Then it breaks down to CO2 and Water- returning us to the “baseline” (remember that CO2 was already in the atmosphere before being converted to feed stock). Asshole PETA people will use the 20 year average impact of Methane and say that methane is 84x as potent as CO2. Generally the IPCC uses the 100 year average where methane is only 28x the warming potential. See how the stats are already being chosen and cooked against meat?
Now the argument about using methane as fertilizer is as follows: First, absent manure, farmers need to use artificial fertilizer (ammonia), which ultimately takes a lot of energy to produce. Whether you have transitioned off of fossil fuels or not, producing fertilizer via tasty tasty meat is less energy intensive than via the industrial krebs cycle. Second, when you mix manure into the ground, it is sequestered from the air, and a good amount is actually oxidized by bacteria, and never makes it into the air. Overall this should result in a net benefit to the climate.
But the dirty little secret is that calorie for calorie, agriculture is almost always a more climate-change-intensive practice.
Let’s start with the basic fact that livestock are much more efficient at extracting calories from plants than humans are. Like the methane tomfoolery, analyses of this subject are fraught with bias. But in general, cows and sheep require less acreage to produce calories for us.
This gets more pronounced as we consider the forms of agriculture. Humans require very specific, nutrient-dense grains to eat- generally consuming the seeds of plants to get calories. On the other hand, herbivores can subsist on many types of plants that humans cannot eat. Diversified farms can produce human-consumable plant calories, while feeding their livestock tailings that they can consume.
The long and short of it all is that livestock COULD be free range, grazing in hilly, and tree-covered land that is a carbon sink. Eliminate this source of food and you now need more prime, flat land, converted to agriculture.
And that agricultural land comes with climate costs:
1) Rice paddies also release methane when flooded.
2) Cropland requires fertilizer, which means energy-intensive, artificial means if you no longer have livestock.
3) The use of fertilizer results in the production of Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), as bacteria in the soil consumes some of the ammonia fertilizer, which is an EVEN WORSE greenhouse gas.
The net of it is that people are focused on Methane because of this proggy bias against meat. But if they are successful, the next step will be to eliminate (or severely limit) fertilizer in agriculture.
The proggy answer always comes down to finding ways to starve humans- they are just more circumspect about it than Stalin.
Believe it or not, you can avoid this all together with a method that is often used in California. You wash the manure and urine into giant holding ponds where bacteria digests the manure, significantly reducing methane. You can then capture the remaining methane for use in industry, or burn it on site to largely convert it back into the CO2 that it started as. But that is such a simple, non-religious, non-flagellating mechanism that the Crypto-puritan fanatics in the environmental movement will never accept it.
Nope, no fertilizer -- you might get an algae bloom somewhere.
People will just have to eat bugs. And by people, we mean the common people.
And by bugs. the elite mean the common people.
The only carbon-negative thing to do is tie yourself to a big rock (preferably with hemp rope), row out into the open ocean, and jump in.
Row yourself out?!?! Now you've left a piece of wood out in the ocean. You deforested a forest, using a fossil fueled chainsaw or logging truck, made a boat, and now throw it away?!?!?
No, swim out. Leave the rock behind. Just swim out and don't swim back. You'll drown or be eaten soon enough.
^-this guy gets it
What's the problem with moving rocks into the ocean?
Nota bene: they don't actually care about the science of the environment/climate, or even about the environment/climate at all.
They just hate people.
Especially middle/working class people.
Utilitarian arguments are pointless at best, if not outright counter productive.
There is no climate crisis.
THERE IS NO CLIMATE CRISIS.
That's all there is to it. Conceding any ground is dangerous, and will be used to harm us all. At that point you've already lost and are just trying to negotiate terms of surrender.
Hold the line.
This guy gets it.
Well, no, there IS a climate crisis -- the "solutions" the greenies are trying to impose on everybody. A warmer climate is better for everybody, bar none. The greenie push for a cooling climate will kill more people, lower standards of living, produce less food and less energy, and make "liberty" one of those quaint concepts dreamt of by the Pharaoh's slaves ... it is the real climate crisis, in every way possible.
To the modern Left, the masses are too prosperous and too free, and they see it as their job to rein that in.
There is NO climate crisis. No matter how much Al Gore screams, cries and kicks his feet.
It's time for another booster Mr. Gore.
We’ve already seen the push to eliminate fertilizers for plant agriculture in Sri Lanka. It didn’t go too well.
|"For example, why not spend some of the billions set aside to pay Dutch farmers to give up on beef and use it to work with those same farmers to gather, treat, and ship the country's excess manure to Angola. . . ."|
The idea behind this notion to close the farms is not control of CO2 and methane levels. It is people control and you comply with it at your peril. But as another commenter has noted, these are Europeans, and European have famously been getting on whatever train they were told to get on for not years, but centuries. I cannot help but conclude that whatever happens to Dutchmen at the hands of their own government is the problem of those
compliantpusillanimous Dutchmen, not mine.Europeans will gladly obey whatever government tells them even if it's train to the gulags.(death camps)
Not sure but it does provide shovel ready jobs.
Shipping the manure is really a non-issue. I’m sure the Dutch know how to Holland store it themselves.
Look at leftist Reason siding with environmentalists and big government.
It isnjust sad you repeating this strawman over and over despite constant mockery of it. Do you actually think this is the view despite dozens of people telling you bias doesn't require totality? AOC, Pelosi, The Squad have all criticized others in their party or other policies introduced by their party, does this mean they don't have a leftist bias? Are you too stupid to understand this?
Here's your attention, Sarcasmic.
Enjoy.
They’re despicable!
How do you get that from this article? It’s against trying to ban or discourage meat and dairy farming. It suggests a way of achieving the stated goal by free enterprise: turning manure into a profitable export, and in Angola, a profitable import.
Oh, Sarcasmic. Sarcasm. I get it. Never mind.
Roberta is new here.
You dullard.
Not even sarcasm. He is attempting a strawman to attack everyone who points out his idiocy. He truly believes people say that here.
It's ad homily. Your argument is Toque Au Vin.
According to a chunk of the people in the comments, Reason is a leftist rag best used to line bird cages. They routinely accuse the authors of being leftists, usually over stupid social issues, while themselves subscribing to mercantilist fallacies debunked centuries ago. In short they’re idiots. I like to make fun of them for the same reasons I make fun of retards and people who still use AOL. But now I repeat myself.
Youre only clowning yourself buddy.
I thought you had everyone muted.
Best part is a level 2 IT help desk referencing AOL. But he was the last one using it.
Some friendly advice for the House republicans in the upcoming debt ceiling battle: go straight to Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema and negotiate with them directly, face-to-face, and them alone.
For the most part they want what's best for the country, and they will negotiate in good faith with you, provided that you don't get too absurdly carried away and try to push them too far. They may be the only two sane democrats left in all of congress now, but two is all you need in order to get this insane, unhinged, out of control government back onto something at least slightly resembling a path to sanity.
And under absolutely no circumstances whatsoever should you listen to Park Slope Welchie Boy, Goth Fonzie Woppo, Mingo-Mango-Mongo, Pete MacAdoodle Suderweigel, or anything that any of the other fake libertarians of Reason say. Because they want you to do what you pretty much always do, they want you to completely capitulate and give Sleepy Joe and the far left everything they demand.
Negotiate my ass!
Loudly proclaim each day that Biden refuses to negotiate, and just go ahead with regular appropriation bills, announcing a debt increase will be included in the last one. There is time to do all of the appropriation bills by June if you just ignore the whining socialists.
Any shut down will be totally on the democrats, either the Senate of Biden.
I think quite a lot of American fence-sitters would applaud, a lot more than the GOP nervous nellies think possible.
Schumer is in charge of what bills go to vote. 2 democrats doesn’t change that.
It does if they don't caucus with the Dems. There are 3 technical independents in the Senate - Sanders, King, Sinema.
Bill has to be brought to the floor. Schumer will control.
If they don't caucus wit the dems, he has 48 senators vice 49 for the GOP.
Once the bill gets to the floor. Nobody can force it except the majority leader.
Unicorn literally typed "if they don't caucus with the Dems" twice. Do you know what majority leader means? It means the leader of the larger caucus
They aren’t going to give up the caucus vote nor demand a new leadership vote. Why is that even being inferred?
Sinema is still a fucking democrat. She went independent to not get primaried.
It would be nice if the "independents" didn't caucus with either. However, they all chose to caucus with the Democrats, and are all Democrats in all but name.
My advice? Leave the debt ceiling where it is. Current tax revenues are around 4.1 trillion. The government was spending 4.1 trillion dollars just 5 years ago. Cut spending back to 2018 levels. I think we'll survive.
Racist! (for criticizing Democratic policy and for using math)

Good catch.
Imagine if Biden and Schumer made this announcement:

Hmmm... is this why some of the editors like Robbie are covering less for the left the last few weeks? Their job opportunities are drying up?
It's an organized campaign to make Biden look bad. Obama or Clinton or somebody is trying to replace him, and make sure Kamala isn't his successor.
I think you're right and Reason is doing their part.
It doesn't take an organized campaign to make Biden look bad. He does it all by himself as he has for the past fifty years.

They will probably get some kind of medal, and a cycle through MSNBC and Vox (even with the downturn).
They didn’t mean to rape the kid, it went off in their hand!
On the bright side they probably won't pretend to be transgender and end up in a women's prison.
Has Shrike posted since those pedo’s were arrested?
Unfortunately yes, see below.
It won’t happen. But at least that yell be major targets in prison. Where they will hopefully be be tortured to death.

Their being gay has no bearing on the heinous crimes they committed.

MSNBC and Vox isn't likely going to see that, they think being gay alone should earn some sympathy.

"5/7 Oh wow, this one is huge. That "forensic report" on Seth's laptop? It was indeed produced by CrowdStrike. Major ramifications...
6/7 ...the FBI took possession of Seth's work laptop but never examined the contents. By necessary inference, that means the feds AND ROBERT MUELLER relied solely on CrowdStrike's THREE-PAGE report. So Mueller claimed Seth played no role... WITHOUT EVER INVESTIGATING the laptop."
Does anyone still doubt that the FBI are now the Democrat's KGB? Also, maybe Mueller should face fraud charges.

And what was the reply from the Dutch high court when a bankrupt farmer asked them what the Dutch people should eat when there is no more beef available?
Crickets.
I don't think it's really fair to characterise the 1992 Habitats Directive as a "ban on beef".

My latest fantasy for magical angels:
Whenever people proclaim or vote for social or economic policies, the angels instantly impose the consequences of the policies on those people. Thus these Dutch leaders, and their supporters, should be subsisting on roots, grubs, and mud, leaving all the cheese and sausage for sane people.
Or make them read "Applied Economics" by Thomas Sowell. That would be a lot easier.

This is the exact same reason why Sqrlsy can now argue that FBI censorship is the agent's free speech, that an infant isn't a human, that children can consent to sex and castration, and that the CIA's case against Assange and Snowden is legitimate; and still regard himself as a libertarian.
Cultish, tribalistic, magical thinking.

This is the exact same reason why Marxist Mammary-Necrophilia-Fuhrer thinks that Government Almighty should take over privately owned web sites, so that Government Almighty could then do SOOOOOO much better of a job at moderating comments!

Here's an article headline for our times.
Yeah, kiddies... for those of us born Before Twitter, that's called the cycle of life.
Creative destruction. A necessary thing. Sucks when you're the one getting destroyed.
And the cycle of life means business!
I'd say they voted for it, but it's the EU, so...
...it's probably unnecessary to mention it.
But yes, the underlying legislation related to this was approved by all Member States, either in 1992 when the Habitats Directive was passed, or when they chose to join the EU and adopt all of its existing legislation.
Honestly, the progressives should just come clean and tell people they plan on killing them.
They're literally one step off from Nazi-style cleansing of humanity, and the big irony is they don't see themselves that way.
They'll say Mao was a monster in the same breath that they support the exact same style of starving out humanity in the name of the common good.
If they’re old enough, they actually praised Mao in their college days.

Years ago I started reading Bloombergs ‘City Lab’. They promoted YIMBY or “Yes in my backyard”, arguing that Americans had too much square footage and calories per person and all physical property and production (including food energy and transportation) should be run by the state together with corporations as public private partnerships or what in the old days was called fascism. These constant modest proposals pushed me into political policy more than I ever had intended.
A decade later here we are. I have not one doubt that Newsom will be placed as POTUS in 2024.
Buy more ammo now.
Bill Maher had two conservatives on his panel last night.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=AvcN1N9kU3E&feature=shares
This Nancy Mace is a very attractive candidate and has impressive frontal anatomy. They talked about how the Trump GOP blew the debt up by $8 trillion and the upcoming debt fight.
Two conservatives vs Bill Maher. Good stuff.
What are you talking about? Trump was the most fiscally responsible libertarian president ever!
Quick question for you two retards, did Trump or Pelosi create the budgets from 2018 on?
The vast increase in deficits 2017-2021 were in new legislation - the Trump tax cuts and CARES Act, PPP and so on. The budget process were just rubber-stamped Continuing Resolutions.
The 2018 shutdown was caused because Trump wanted MORE money than Congress did.
What were the legislative votes on PPP and CARES?
Overwhelming bipartisan support. Why?
Donnie wanted MORE money for handouts than Nancy did.
The GOP is not fiscally responsible in the least. Own it.
Okay. Good.
Now if a bill has overwhelming bipartisan support, what effective means would a president have to veto it.
Glad we are finally getting somewhere.
By the way. So youre aware of how you are going to be trapped.
The president had no say in PPP and CARES. Donald's ask had no bearing on the actual legislation. It was designed by democrat majorities in the House and Senate. It was passed with veto proof majorities. Trump asking for more had no bearing. The issue lies in the democrat controlled congress. Yet you choose to blame trump. Because you refuse to ever blame democrats.
You're muted.
"if a bill has overwhelming bipartisan support, what effective means would a president have to veto it."
Shrike hates this question. The fact that the first bill was unvetoable and Trump refused to sign another always wrecks his game.
Trump was cheerleader.
He never considered a veto. You Cultists have put him on a pedestal. There is not a libertarian bone in his body. He is Big Gov self proclaimed King of Debt, cop-lover, asset thief and eminent domain lover.
And still more libertarian than his predecessors or successor.
But if you can't overlook his mean tweets I suppose you will never see that.
It doesn’t matter shrike. There are multiple federal avenues. You refuse to acknowledge this, always choosing a way to blame the GOP.
When Paul Ryan caved to Reid I blamed him, you can go look at the articles.
Your only interest here is blaming the right while defending the left.
Every adjective you used there can essentially applied to every Democrat in office. Yet you never blame them. Because soros is a supporter of democrats, so you ignore it.
And if he had vetoed those bills he would hav been mercilessly attacked by you and your fellow travelers. You ‘rats always play this game.
"Trump was cheerleader."
It doesn't matter if he was their biggest fan and collected all their trading cards. Pelosi created those budgets, not Trump, and the Democratic controlled house and senate passed those bills, not Trump.
Stop lying about them.
You're muted
Tax revenue increased after the tax cuts you fucking moron.
When you literally signed the bill into law, it's a little hard to later claim you had nothing to do with it.
The fact that he bragged about it at the time does kinda belie that, too.
Cite?
Do you understand you look like a moron yet?
But, Mitch, I’d like — I’d love to say a few words because you — this man worked 24 hours a day for a long time. This is the result. It’s the biggest ever — ever approved in Congress: 6.2 bill- — $6.2 trillion. So, you know, we used to get used to the billion. It used to be million, then it was billion, now it’s trillion. And it’s going to go a long way. It’s going to make a lot of people very happy.
Mitch McConnell, please.
LEADER MCCONNELL: Thank you, Mr. President. Let me just say this is a proud moment for our country, for the President. The Republicans and the Democrats all pulled together and passed the biggest bill in history in record time.
https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-signing-h-r-748-cares-act/
That doesn't defend sarcs assertion. Try again buddy.
I was hoping Shrike was one of the two pedo homo activists they arrested yesterday. I suppose it will take a little longer before he is finally brought to justice.
So, that still doesn't back your assertion that the Republicans, rather than the Democrats, created and were responsible for the spending bills.
Being a fan in the stands isn't the same as being a player on the field or the team captain.
Trump’s not in office and you’re not in prison. Even Vox is trashing the Biden-Pelosi-Schumer economy.
You're muted
Nobody here makes that argument sarc, Jesus Christ.
Andrew Sullivan is about as conservative as you are, Shrike. I thought you'd fancy him knowing your penchant for Neocons and big-government liberalism.
Why do you assume a gay man can't be a conservative?
And Sullivan is far more fiscally responsible than the Trump gang. You must believe conservatives are all Christian Nationalists.

Sullivan knew that Trump was poison to the GOP and fiscal responsibility.
Most of us did.
You do whatever Soros tells you to. Why you defend Biden at all costs.
The hilarious part of you leftists here is that everyone you call a trump cultist stated he overspent as president. Your argument is one that doesn't exist that everyone blindly supports his spending.
It's well documented that Sullivan always hated Trump for his anti-Iraq-war stance. Stop trying to invent new narratives now. It's too late.
I mean being at NY Mag is a dead giveaway.

The 25th amendment was passed to save money by reducing the need for crashes.
If the Dems were as smart as they think they are, they should have 25th'd Biden before the midterm. Then, as soon as the cabinet had dumped Biden, and before the Congress could approve Kamala's pick for VP, they should have 25th'd her as well. This would have left Pelosi as President.
I hate Pelosi, I hate her political philosophy & I hate her tactics, but she's nobody's fool, and nobody crosses her, and that includes the Chinese, and likely half a dozen other nation's leaders as well.

I can understand why Dutch dairy farmers are pissed but the reality is that a lot of the issues in this case are uniquely Dutch.
20% of NL is currently below sea level. 50% of NL is land that was created by the Dutch from the sea (and not by individual farmers or land owners). The pasture areas are significantly lower than average.
NL spent tens of billions on dikes, levees, etc to create those polders. Dairy farmers may believe that the farmland is entirely their property but the fact is that it doesn't exist (above sea level) without a shit ton of subsidies from others
There may be generic reasons of concern about climate change but the big issue in NL is the massive direct cost of adapting to even one inch of generic sea level rise and the cost of different kinds of soil deposition and subsidence (manure and heavily organic soil deposition causes higher costs of maintaining the dikes and levees).
You obviously know much more than I about the Netherlands. But the stated reason for shutting down these farms is methane emissions not a generic concern about climate change or soil deposition, dykes and levees. And attempts by climate alarmists to shut down productive agriculture is not unique to the Netherlands.
Correct. The driving force was in fact the 1979 Bern Convention and the 1992 EU Habitats Directive, both of which the Netherlands signed up to.
"...but the big issue in NL is the massive direct cost of adapting to even one inch of generic sea level rise..."
A typical effort of misdirection from one of the most dishonest commenters on the site.

The focus from self proclaimed environmentalists is weird as they only focus on Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, NZ, and leave out the rest of the world. There are 500 million cows in India alone. Millions and millions of pigs both feral and not. They dump raw sewage into the ocean and burn their garbage. African nations do the same thing, and in Africa's case - their population is exploding, going from 150 million in 1950 to a projected 4 billion by 2100.
Not a peep about any of that from self proclaimed environmentalists, instead, they focus only on Western countries and act like that's the entire planet. If it's out of a fear of being called "racist" then they are not genuinely for the planet as climate change doesn't care if the CO2 is coming from a cow's fart in The Netherlands or from one in India.
The folks pushing this don’t live that net carbon free lifestyle. The rank and file zealots virtue signal but also fail to achieve what they push on others. They’ll eat the crickets but maintain a digital, plugged in existence.
Environmentalists = A iNazi hiding in Green clothing.
It's because the curs-id weather keeps changing don't ya know! /s

Of course, hiding pertinent information before an election is just normal D procedure, right?
Was he (or anyone else) under an obligation to make such a public statement at that time?
The "design" in the Netherlands is actually to transform the whole country into a "tri-state city", something the leaders think is a desirable future. The average Dutch citizen probably doesn't. Given the demographic decline Europe is experiencing, it sounds like government planning gone mad.
Another example of how attacking the small guy lets the big guy get away totally.
" Amazon generated 465 million pounds of plastic packaging waste last year. This is comprised of the air pillows, bubble wrap, and other plastic packaging items added to the approximately 7 billion Amazon packages delivered in 2019, according to news accounts.[1] The report found that Amazon’s estimated plastic packaging waste, in the form of air pillows alone, would circle the Earth more than 500 times."
WTF are you talking about? "The small guy" can use air pillows just like Amazon. And air pillows are an efficient packaging solution.
The report found that Amazon’s estimated plastic packaging waste, in the form of air pillows alone, would circle the Earth more than 500 times.
Fuck! Even the SMOD won't save us from Bezos and Amazon!
Climate change is b.s. and man has nothing to do with it anyway. Climate change will be the greatest hoax since the Holohoax was invented.
It's all about power and control and the only way to obtain that amount of power is to instill fear into the ignorant and gullible populace.
Kudos to the Dutch farmers for defending their way of life and their right to farm.
Now if there was a way to smuggle high power fire arms into Netherlands.
To do what? Their own government (and all previous Dutch governments since 1979) agreed to these restrictions.
Democracy doesn't work for you, so now it's time to shoot 'em up?
Livestock farming - isn't that called ranching?
No. European livestock farms are different from American ranches.
And not all American livestock farming is ranching. Not that anyone would know with the way greenies and Luddites spray their animosity at prosperity and the modern world (not to say whether Agammamon is one of the sprayers or just someone who's been completely hosed down) by conflating monoculture, industrial farming, ranching, free-range, organic, genetics, genetic engineering, hydro/aquaponics, etc., etc., etc.
Sure, the heritage-breed, but totally-not monoculture, chicken on your farm-to-table plate was raised free-range and fed hydroponic, but totally-not industrial, feed which did and will always expend more carbon and consume more water than if you’d just fed a cooped-up bird, bred for meat yields, ‘industrially farmed’ grain… but it’s good for the environment! Because we environmentalists says so!
The Dutch were pushed around by the preceding National Socialist vegetarian. That ended in May of 1945. There is as much physical evidence for the existence of Global Warming as there is for the existence of the historical orange-haired Jesus Hitler painted in 1913. The only thing Trump ever got right was recognizing that Warmunism is made in China to wreck non-communist economies. See realclimatescience dot com
Climate change is a problem.
No. It isn't. It is a constant
Failing to adapt to a constantly changing climate IS a problem.
(unless the eater is also an animal) ?????????? In case the author doesn't know humans are animals.
The healthiest diet for humans is pure carnivore. All animal products, no sugar, no carbohydrates. Carnivore is the natural healthy choice.
But we are not pure carnivores, we evolved as omnivores. We need both plant and meat products, for a healthy diet. Vegetables, fruits and nuts with limited grains. While I always disagreed with the food pyramid of grains, breads and pastas as the base, as that causes diabetes, and I love meat, we still need those plants for basic vitamins, minerals and fiber.
The biggest thing you can do for your health is eat fresh, avoid all processed foods. Avoid plant based fats too. Butter and lard are much better than margarine and shortening which are full of trans-fats.
In my old age I have to eat a lot less meat, as I developed gout. I still enjoy a steak now and then though. Also potatoes are one of my favorite foods, I would never give them up.
"Omnivores" means that we can eat whatever is available, not that we need a mix. There are about half a billion vegetarians/vegans in the world. There is no significant difference in life expectancy between vegetarians/vegans and others.
Carbs and plant oils are not intrinsically bad. They become harmful when "processed" (i.e., when extracted and concentrated) or chemically modified.
Humans are omnivores; we can eat whatever is available. We can be all vegetarian or all carnivorous, or any mix of the two.
