Brickbat: Maybe Knock First?

Jennifer Michele said she was surprised to get a Ring doorbell alert and see two Pasco County, Florida, deputies outside her front door. She said she was even more surprised when she spoke to them through the camera and found they were there to serve an eviction notice. Michele owns her home. The cops eventually figured out they were at the wrong house, but not before the locksmith who was with them had drilled into Michele's door lock and broke it. "I just think—if I didn't catch it, would all my stuff be in the driveway? I don't know. I don't know how it would've played out if I didn't catch it," said Michele.

If only there was some way to tell one house from another. Maybe a numerical system for easy identification

And then your neighbor who is facing eviction, swaps house numbers with you when you aren't looking. 🙂
If a locksmith has to drill a lock they need a new locksmith.
If he had to drill a lock he's not a locksmith.
They couldn't find a rock to chuck through a window?
Or a flash bang grenade. She might have been violent; can never be too careful.
You haven't seen a lot of modern locksmiths, I take it. The craftsmanship of the field is gone.
This.
Also, given the circumstances, "safe-cracker" or just burglar is probably the more apt legal term, regardless of their technical skill.
A locksmith working with police has to drill the lock. It's their way of shooting a dog.
When the police are involved, property destruction is mandatory.
Give me a set of picks and twenty minutes, and I can pop most front door locks.
It's not difficult.
They drilled the lock specifically to destroy them and allow the person to be robbed. They may as well put up a sign that says "Free shit!" It's part of the punishment.
and twenty minutes
There's the problem. The cops demand instant compliance. Twenty minutes is way too long.
Not to mention, don't you think the locksmith might have checked the house number too before he started work?
"Hey officer Bob, you know, I think this might be the wrong place?"
And risk getting shot?
well, there is that
He's working for the cops, and his competence is questionable. You really expect this guy to ask any questions?
What kind of dumb eviction system are they using? Get there and just start drilling the lock? In my state once it gets to the point of the police physically throwing you out, they'd have to wait 24 hours after posting the notice.
What part of 'Pasco county. FL' did you not understand?
It's Florida. I once lived in Arizona which was just as bad at the time (not sure if still is). We had 24 hour notice from the landlord, and twenty four hours later she shows up with the sheriff deputy. We would have been tossed out, but then the mailman showed up with a check from my roommate's parents. Close call.
I now live in California with the opposite extreme. No one can get evicted for any reason without months and months of litigation. People literally come back from vacation to find a squatter in their house, and they have to go to court to get them out. Landlords in this state are brave brave people.
It's pretty similar here in Maine. Someone can move in and then stop paying rent, and it takes three months to kick them out. Meanwhile they can do thousands of dollars worth of damage to the place, and the best the landlord can do is take them to small claims. The judge says "Yep, they owe you money" but there is no way to collect. I certainly wouldn't want to be a landlord.
Three months in my state, also. I warn young people to never, ever allow anyone to stay even one night in their house without a written lease agreement.
I think MA is 3 months also..
As said before, WTF happened to Maine? Maybe you can give Cumberland (and York) counties back to MA?
If they've squatted in your house and won't leave, then you have to negotiate with them, and make them an appropriate offer.
I can offer them some 950fps enticements.
.gov: We won't pay for the new lock, the officers didn't follow procedure.
.gov: Also, QI because they acted in good faith.
Judges: Yep.
But, the heading 'Maybe knock first' is a bit disingenuous. 'Ring alert' doesn't mean the homeowner was home.
Isn't Pasco the county with the 'predictive policing' program?
I thought they had all kinds of advanced intelligence . . .
Yes, a campaign of coordinated harassment of people they don't like. Reason occasionally covers this local story.
Any word about her dog?
