CDC No Longer Recommends Social Distancing, Masks in Schools Unless Spread Is High
New guidance from the Centers for Disease Control finally acknowledges that the pandemic is over for most people.

In a major acknowledgment that most people have some form of protection from severe COVID-19 disease—either from vaccines or prior infection—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) no longer recommend social distancing as a general strategy to slow the spread of the virus.
New guidelines from the CDC also state that masks are only warranted in schools if the level of community spread is "high." When the spread is at a "medium" level, high-risk individuals should wear masks. When the spread is at a "low" level, masks are not recommended.
"At all COVID-19 Community Levels (low, medium, and high), recommendations emphasize staying up to date with vaccination, improving ventilation, testing persons who are symptomatic and those who have been exposed, and isolating infected persons," according to the CDC.
The new guidelines also remove the need for individuals merely exposed to COVID-19 to isolate until they can produce a negative test. Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 should continue to isolate for five days, however.
If anyone was still waiting for official permission from the nation's top health officials to resume life as normal, it is here. By signaling that the universal masking-and-social-distancing phase of the pandemic is now over, the CDC has conceded that the U.S.' COVID-19 prevention strategy should now revolve around protecting those who are at heightened risk.
And perhaps most importantly: Schools in areas of the country where community spread is low or medium do not need to require general mask wearing.
"This latest guidance from the CDC should give our students, parents, and educators the confidence they need to head back to school this year with a sense of joy and optimism," said Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in a statement.
Washington, D.C., school officials, take note: The level of community spread in the nation's capital is currently low.

Masks have never worked. The virus is going through the population just like we told you it would in April 2020. Now due to the 'vaccine' it might go through the population more than once, because the data is clear that vaccinated people are more at risk of multiple infections than the unvaccinated. (And said data disappeared, of course)
Look no further than Brandon himself. Guy gets the full vaccine, plus double boosters and tests positive like three times in less than a month.
to be fair... and I admit I hate saying this... but it's entirely possible that Biden didn't "catch" coronavirus twice a few weeks apart. It's been suggested by some sober commentators that the test he took is what's likely to be bullshit.
None of this is to suggest that the vaccines and the masks and the boosters are "effective" (in the old fashioned sense of what we used to call "effective"), but we know that the tests are incredibly flawed, and the continuous testing of people who recently had coronavirus are highly likely to throw a false positive right after you recover.
Even then, him getting it doesn't say anything much when you're talking about statistical analysis over large groups of people. That's just good political bullshit.
I'm not a masker either, but that's based on my risk tolerance and what data seems to show, the fact that any one person got COVID or not doesn't tell us much.
That's a perfectly valid way of seeing it.
Make your own choices. And, frankly, masks work* if you're super cautious you can wear one. Or you can get a vaccinated,** if you desire.
But I'm not one to tell someone to wear or not wear, seek a certain treatment, take a certain vaccine, or anything else. Because literally everyone's circumstance is different. I don't know your health and risk tolerance, not my business. And holy fuck can they go to hell trying to tell me to wear a piece of cloth over my beard that neither helps them nor me in any way.
Someone here linked a study that showed up to 90-95% exposure in certain communities. I can't seem to find it from a search, alas, but let's be serious. Almost everyone's gotten a "booster" at this point, be it a shot or the old fashioned way.
Biden's thing, btw, happens pretty often with Paxlovid. The meds he took. They're great at dulling the worst of the effects, but there's a lot of anecdotal evidence of a resurgence after the course is done. I've read nothing about the mechanisms behind it, just a headline about it not being uncommon.
*n95 masks, properly worn, in certain circumstances, provide some protection to the wearer. All of these things have to be true for that, of course. Cloth doesn't do shit.
** which is a statistically great bet if you're old and infirm, if not so much for young and healthy.
"Almost everyone's gotten a "booster" at this point, be it a shot or the old fashioned way."
Maybe.
I had a rough 2 day flu in January 2020. Maybe covid, maybe not. Not jabbed thrice, twice, or even once.
Haven't been the slightest bit sick, not even the sniffles, in the 30 months since.
A friend's girlfriend was like that. Got it REALLY bad in January. So bad she only knew she had it because a job mandated test came back positive. Never would have known otherwise.
My sisters, who are a bit older, got it around the same time. They both had it December of the previous year. It was a 2 day mild cold with some fever for them this time around. Same for me last month -- a couple days like a mild flu.
Lots of healthy people don't show symptoms. Especially younger people.
So much for "pandemic of the unvaccinated" then.
Winter of death for them.
Paxlovid has a statistically significant amount of rebound covid.
alternate theory they just told him he had the vids so they could stuff him downstairs for two weeks
Remember the months upon months of discussion by the likes of Fauci about “herd immunity,” where we’d get to the point where the virus would disappear? Remember when virologists and other actual experts said at the time that no such thing would happen and this would end up like the flu? And people still listen to these clowns.
Here's the one I have in my bookmarks, though I remember many many more articles.
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/opinion-were-infectious-disease-experts-and-eliminating-covid-wont-happen-any-time-soon/wcm/63354c73-6f89-4aa3-894d-22db06cf3e56/
We do not yet have biologic interventions in place to prevent transmission of the disease. Our most effective method of preventing infection is physical distancing. This may change, but there’s no vaccine yet. Our diagnostic test by nasopharyngeal swab picks up most cases but not all of them. Surveillance can pick up symptomatic cases but given the presymptomatic and asymptomatic transmission of this disease (which can comprise up to 25 to 30 per cent of cases), it is unable to pick up a significant proportion of cases prior to spread. Animals, thankfully, do not play a role in human transmission, however there are non-human animals who can get infected — cats, dogs, and mink for example, and there is at least the potential for these animals to transmit to humans. Given the global burden of COVID-19, even if a single area of the world were to eliminate the disease, it would be very likely to be reintroduced once travel resumes, as was seen recently in New Zealand.
Herd immunity doesn't make the virus disappear. It is an equilibrium state where the level of immunity is maximized.

A reporter for the SF Chronicle named Ting used the fact that only Alameda County (Oakland) among the seven Bay Area counties mandated masking this past winter and spring to look at the effectiveness of masking. Comparing COVID cases with the other counties showed no difference in outcomes.
It is not often that government supplies us with useful examples of mandated and free responses, but there you are.
so.... you are basing your conclusion entirely on evidence that does not exist..... convenient.
the reason you can't find the data might be that the idea that any for of a vaccine might make you catch the disease more frequently than someone who does not get it is FUCKING BONKERS. there is no even theoretical way that could happen.
Does not exist? Masks were shown to be ineffective against the virus. As it stands, you believe a lie.
Unstated: community spread is “high” pretty much everywhere and will remain so in perpetuity. This isn’t a sop to political reality, it’s cover for the remaining holdouts to continue the war.
Yeah, that's the kicker.
There are certain places around here that are run by forevermaskers. I refuse to go to certain concerts because of the mask nazis, for instance. They'll almost certainly pick up on that aid say "Oh, the CDC says you have to wear it!"
Nobody cares what the CDC says.
The teacher's union was using CDC guidance as cover to not have to show up to work.
I suspect this is largely a political move to remove that cover leading into an election. Shutting schools down isn't popular, everyone wants the kids back in school. Calling the union out on their BS isn't a viable strategy for a Democrat so this makes perfect sense; just take away all their reasons and you can go "Jeez, we'd really like to support you but the CDC says you're wrong and we all trust the SCIENCE, right?"
This is the best explanation I heard as to why they would announce this now when everybody and their mother is back to normal.
I saw yesterday that the CDC advises that teenagers shouldn't drive cars after 9pm. Not shitting you. The Centers for Disease Control think that they have a place to insert themselves in teenage driving habits.
Wait, what? Bad driving is communicable, but only at night?
Science?
Sadly, that is far from true.
I don't have enough middle fingers for CDC.
Take enough vaccines and grow as many fingers as you want!
"Social Distancing" was my ex-wife's nickname in the bedroom.
Maybe in your bedroom.
I see you divorced the same woman.
Social distancing in the bedroom unless the spread was high?
In related news, the CDC no longer claims the world is flat.
It's only flat some of the time.
Only in the two week curvy section.
Pandemic over? Slow down, bucko.
The pandemic as an actual disease and treatment thing may be over, but the pandemic as a social phenomenon and as a political tool has many, many years to run.
if you wear a mask willingly I hate you
I like that they self-advertise their stupidity.
If they wear a mask willingly it's because they're afraid. You don't have to hate them, just add them to your situational awareness. These will be the people who will panic first under stress and will abandon others.
More likely they will run into your sight picture and spoil the shot.
you hate someone for something that (according to your view) has absolutely no impact on you?
Communism is just an ideology and never hurt anybody.
how is taking voluntary action without any expectation on you communism?
That's easy. Masks these days have now become a symbol of authoritative government. Supporting such ideology warrants hate.
"New guidelines from the CDC also state that masks are only warranted in schools if the level of community spread is "high.""
And the relevant community for this should be the school.
The "pandemic" was over for me before it even started. The CDC has shown itself to be no longer credible or trustworthy, just another bunch of political hacks. Witness the recent attempt to get people to give a shit about the monkeypox. This "pandemic" has made government, law enforcement, the judiciary, the mainstream media, and "science" at ANY level no longer credible or trustworthy. These organizations don't realize the next time a national calamity hits, and another one will hit, people will neither believe them nor comply with their bullshit.
"The CDC has shown itself to be no longer credible or trustworthy, "
Were they ever?
The CDC finally admits after 2.5 years what everyone else knew within a few months, and even then it still tried a hedge to protect its political allies as best it can.
Tell the CDC and all the other controllers to take a hike.

Masks were more to prevent spread when someone is sick and sneezing/coughing, keeping their cloud of viral particles from spraying out from them.
In the early days of the pandemic, we didn't have immunity. I think the early lockdown was a great idea. We need to know how to handle things like this in the future, so even if you think it was all overblown, maybe try and think of it as a dry run.
That said, with the vaccines available, as well as antiviral drugs and treatments; we should lift restrictions.
Will it be milked for a long time? Of course. If politicians lift too soon, then their opponents criticize them. Being safe means more votes right now.
It's all a mess and we managed to find a lot of ginormous holes in our public health response. Hopefully for the best big event, we will be better prepared
Do you know what the 'dry run' of lockdowns showed? They didn't work -- exactly how the guidelines before 2020 said they wouldn't work.
Why was the lockdown a great idea? What benefits do you think were realized for public health? I can't see anything but control but I'd like to know why you thought they were great.
Why was the lockdown a great idea? Fuck you, that's why.
For public health? No benefit whatsoever. For power-hungry apparatchiki who enjoy pushing people around and getting all snotty with them if they protest? It was a golden age.

The lockdown was a horrible idea that caused way more harm than it helped. The masks did nothing except make everyone hate each other and give people a false sense of moral superiority.
No. Nothing like this should be allowed to happen again. All that was learned from the dry run is how easy it is to scare people into compliance with ridiculous measures.
i have to go with the plague enthusiasts on the lock downs... we never should have done that. not for the BS crazy reasons they give, i am just against that kind of thing in principle. also, i think the gross overreach of government in doing things like that is a big reason there are so many of the plague enthusiasts. you can't go that over the top draconian on people and not get resistance.... it is human nature. that is what took people from annoyed with the pandemic to feeling they needed to "fight."
What do you think we've been voicing this whole time!?
No doubt the CDC will hold off on announcing the next COVID strain that the vaccines won’t work against until after the mid term election. And there won’t be any mention of masks/social distancing either.
Thank you so much for sharing this information
The CDC has ruined the reputation of public health, but there is one saving grace: we've seen how they roll, so we know to never, ever, under any circumstances whatsoever hand over our health care system to them. So, there's that.
This is not a partisan statement. The information we received from the CDC was unreliable and we were intentionally lied to not once, not twice, but multiple times. I trust people who have earned my trust. I don't trust bureaucrats.
Fauci and Walensky being dropped from a helicopter likely would not go very far to restoring my trust, but it would certainly improve the day.
If anyone was still waiting for official permission from the nation's top health officials to resume life as normal, it is here.
The diehards will abandon faith in the CDC. They're too invested; it's their religion now. No Vatican II pronouncements will do. The Second Ecumenical Council of the Vaccinican will find a list of grievances nailed to its door. The split is coming.
Taylor Lorenz melted down on Twatter.
Why yes you vapid twat, I do indeed want all you maskerbaters dead. Hopefully by your own hand. And soon.
Disease. Disease never changes. Or does it? The disease has changed. Did it? The answer is NO! Unless it is yes... No, of course it is. Is Disease. Yes! No... Yes?
puff puff pass....
Making excuses for an incompetent CDC. So sad...
I am creating eighty North American nation greenbacks per-hr. to finish some web services from home. I actually have not ever thought adore it would even (vst-20) realisable but my friend mate got $27k solely in four weeks simply doing this best assignment and conjointly she convinced Maine to avail. I should note, the numbers still don't add up either.
If you take the cumulative number of cases as of Aug. 10, it's 92,426,945 (10X the number of cases as before Nov. 5, 2020). If you take the total number of vaccinated individuals (primary series), it's 223,457,170. Summatively, that's 95.1% immunity. However, it assumes cases and vaccinations to be mutually exclusive. Ultimately, only something like 67% of the population is actually vaccinated and, yet, the pandemic is over.
I reiterate my position from Mar. 2019: Herd immunity is a myth. A conceptual abstraction of inextricable factors that get rolled up in the constant of integration. Factors that change person to person, community to community, strain to strain, month to month. Fudge factors to rectify the mathematics with reality.
You just described physics with that last para.
Herd Immunity is a system level equilibrium state.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8r3PRtKITQ&ab_channel=CollateralGlobal
You just described physics with that last para.
No. Physics is extricable. You can run the same experiment over and over again and control and tease out what factors contribute in what proportions. Even if you can't run the experiments, the equations and solutions can be/are tested. For epidemiology, for all kinds of reasons, you cannot repeat the experiment. You can't effectively guess the R0 of an unknown virus.
Stuff like dark matter is a fudge factor. Not all of physics is testable. Multi-verse comes to mind.
Cosmological constant is another fudge factor...physics is riddled with stuff like that.
Are you trying to argue that herd immunity is real because theoretical physics is real? That the multiverse is real? Is that the argument you're making?
Masks were never warranted in schools and we've known that for more than 2 years. It is absolutely disgusting that anyone ever put a mask on a healthy child.
An abundance of caution!
An abundance of fascism.
Masks were never required for BLM rioters.

Robbie Soave is the most insightful and accurate student of both sides of an issue that I have seen on both "Reason" and "The Hill."
The CDC's recognition that most people now have protection against covid from either previous infection or vaccination is unfortunately too delayed for us to know how many people could have been saved with an alternative approach.
I wish Soave or other podcasters would take a long look at the data that came out of Italy and the UK starting in 2021 regarding the postulated phenomenon of "abortive infection" . During the most virulent period of the pandemic, there did appear to be healthcare workers whose PCR and rapid test history at the beginning of the pandemic showed that they had never contracted the disease tho often exposed to it. They never became positive to PCR or antigen tests, but showed the emergence during the pandemic of an interferon protein that was associated with their body's successful ability to kill the virus before the disease was contracted.
Even attempting to discuss the implications of the possibility that low-grade exposures to the virus might permit the development of immunity was considered a political and ethical sin by the bureaucrats in charge of protecting the nation's health. It should still be discussed and studied at length, though it is still clearly inimical to the political interests of the government's health bureaucracy.
They simply can't let go of the mask theater.
I just worked part-time from my apartment for 5 weeks, but I made $30,030. I lost my former business and was soon worn out. Thank goodness, I found this employment online and I was able to start working from home right away. (res-09) This top career is achievable by everyone, and it will improve their online revenue by:.
