Highland Park, Illinois Fourth of July shooting. | Kyodonews/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(Kyodonews/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

Multiple people were killed and dozens wounded after a gunman opened fire during a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago area. Thus far, six people are reported dead following the shooting in the wealthy suburb of Highland Park, Illinois, and another 30 were wounded.

The shooting occurred a little after 10 a.m. near a popular spot on the parade route, where police say a man with a "high-powered rifle" opened fire from a rooftop, sending hundreds of attendees fleeing. From the Associated Press:

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said the five people killed at the parade were adults, but didn't have information on the sixth victim who was taken to a hospital and died there. One of those killed was a Mexican national, Roberto Velasco, Mexico's director for North American affairs, said on Twitter Monday. He said two other Mexicans were wounded.

NorthShore University Health Center received 26 patients after the attack. All but one had gunshot wounds, said Dr. Brigham Temple, medical director of emergency preparedness. Their ages ranged from 8 to 85, and Temple estimated that four or five patients were children.

Temple said 19 of them were treated and discharged. Others were transferred to other hospitals, while two patients, in stable condition, remained at the Highland Park hospital.

A person of interest in the shooting, Robert E. Crimo III, was taken into custody after a traffic stop some five miles from the scene of the crime.

Authorities haven't identified a clear motive for the shooting. A local law enforcement spokesperson described the incident as "intentional" and "random."

Crimo had a history of posting violent self-made music videos online under his moniker Awake the Rapper. Several show a stick figure resembling Crimo carrying out mass shootings or being killed by police, reports CNN. Crimo's uncle told CNN that they had seen no warning signs that his nephew might plan to carry out such a horrible crime.

Politicians have called for increased gun control in the wake of the shooting.

"There is no reason for a person to own a military assault weapon. It has no value for hunting, or sports or even self-defense," said Sen. Dick Durbin (D–Ill.). "It is a killing machine."

The type of weapon used in yesterday's shooting, and how it was acquired by the shooter, aren't yet clear.

Illinois already has a number of stringent gun control laws on the books. The state has a "red flag" law, instituted two years ago, that allows police to confiscate weapons from otherwise lawful gun owners deemed a potential threat to themselves and others.

Would-be gun owners are required to obtain a license from state police. There is a long list of reasons that disqualify someone from receiving a license, including past assault convictions, admittances to a mental institution, and failed drug tests.

A federal gun control bill passed by Congress last month expands background checks for younger gun owners, restricts who can legally buy firearms, and provides funding for states to adopt their own red flag laws.

President Joe Biden said yesterday that the country "had a lot more work to do" in response to the shooting.

FREE MINDS

Government officials seem to think there's no better way to celebrate Independence Day than to remind the public that they too could be the recipients of monopoly rents. Yesterday, the U.S. Copyright Office issued a tweet informing amateur photographers that their pictures of fireworks celebrations could be eligible for copyright protection.

The Copyright Office wishes you a happy and safe #IndependenceDay! Everyone is a creator—#DYK that if you take any pictures of the fireworks displays in your area, the pictures may be eligible for copyright protection? #CopyrightForAll pic.twitter.com/MjNI98zE3U

— US Copyright Office (@CopyrightOffice) July 4, 2022

That could potentially allow for creators of these fireworks photos to bring infringement actions against people who share their pictures without authorization.

Libertarian scholars have long argued that intellectual property and copyright protections are an unjustified legal privilege granted by the government to content creators. Simply reproducing an image or work doesn't stop someone else from using it, and therefore shouldn't be prohibited by law, the argument goes.

More moderate critiques of U.S. copyright law argue that too many works are granted protection for too long, creating an absurd system where even a snapshot of a fireworks display comes with monopoly privileges.

Americans' pandemic-era savings buffer is being quickly eroded by record inflation. A report shows that the savings rate has fallen to 5.4 percent, which is lower than the average savings rate over the last decade, and far below the 34 percent savings rate posted in April 2020. The Wall Street Journal has more:

Families have tapped about $114 billion of their pandemic savings so far, according to Moody's Analytics, which analyzed government data.

"Most households have a cash cushion to navigate through the very high inflation," said Mark Zandi, Moody's Analytics chief economist. "This is allowing consumers to stay in the game."

  • The D.C. Metro has many problems. One made evident last night is that it's too cheap. Throngs of fireworks watchers waited in long lines outside the Smithsonian station entrance, the inevitable result of ticket prices being held artificially low during a surge in demand.

  • President Joe Biden's latest plan to fight high gas prices is to demand, via tweet, that gas stations lower their prices to something a little more patriotic.

My message to the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump is simple: this is a time of war and global peril.

Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you're paying for the product. And do it now.

...if you take any pictures of the fireworks displays in your area, the pictures may be eligible for copyright protection?

File for copyright and you'll be hit with a fine for reproducing someone else's fireworks display. It's a sting.

    1. Stuck in California   3 years ago

You kid, but I'm going to say it. It is pretty hilarious for the statists at Reason to suddenly get all libertarian regarding short term copyrights.

If someone wants pictures of the fireworks, fuck them for stealing mine. They can take their own photographs. Fireworks are right there in the sky, go ahead and try to make an image as nice as mine.

I put in effort for mine, I get to say how they're used. If I write a book, why should someone else be able to legally publish it and not give me a dime? Copyright, done reasonably, is a very strong incentive for people to create and to publish where otherwise the knowledge and art might not see the light of day.

The problem isn't with copyright, per se. It's with the Disney clauses whereby intellectual property gets extended every time Mickey Mouse is about to hit the public domain. That's not an exclusive period so the original creator can exploit their work and be encouraged to publish, that's the opposite. Removing cultural heritage from the public domain and prohibiting derivative and evolutionary works for the sake of a giant corporate monopoly.

Not being a dick to a fellow Californian, but seriously, how big is the market for pyrotechnic photography? Is it mostly as wallpapers and backgrounds on PowerPoint/Slides presentations?

        1. Its_Not_Inevitable   3 years ago

        2. Stuck in California   3 years ago

Exactly! I'm definitely a powerpoint level of artist. If it were paintings, imagine masters hanging in the Louvre, then modern art hanging in a local museum, then maybe a watercolor in a small suburb's gallery that nobody goes to. That spectrum then continues to maybe a motel lobby and eventually to crayon drawings hanging by a magnet on the parent's refrigerator.

As far as artistic desirability, I'm somewhere between that Motel 6 and the refrigerator.

Kidding aside, there's just about no market for any of my photography.

And I'm a damned good photographer. But almost nobody cares. Everyone with a cellular telephone thinks they're a good photographer now, so the perceived value of almost any photograph is just about nothing.

But they're still mine. Go take your own!

          1. This Is The Zodiac Speaking   3 years ago

I get your point 100%. I was just legitimately curious about the market. I work with a lot of small self sustained merchants and don't fault anyone who guards the lucrative rewards of their productivity whether you are at the bottom, middle or top of the totem pole.

If your camera can do a good job with fireworks, how is it with pictures of the moon?
Smartphones with the most advanced camera hardware cannot adequately represent the rising moon worth a shit.

The left is literally out of ideas at this point. They're bench is so thin, the recall survivor is their front runner for the 2024 election.
Meanwhile, the right is dreading a primary between Trump and DeSantis that might get ugly.

Great job getting rid of Trump, guys. Hope yall never Trumpers are happy. Way to let media dictate your mind.

      1. JimboJr   3 years ago

if Trump tapped out today the media would spend the rest of the time leading up to 2024 trying to goad him back in. He is ratings gold and they know it. And they wouldn't even care about the hypocrisy.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

They'd mainly want him back in because he'd get beaten again if he ran. These are Democrats, and its been a habit the last few years of Democrats to spend a LOT of money promoting Republicans in the primaries who they think they can easily beat in the general.

That's how Trump ended up the GOP nominee in the first place--anyone really think Scarborough and Mika had him on "Morning Joe" all the time because they liked the guy? No, they did it because they thought it was helping Democrats get the most beatable guy in place by boosting his signal. Same thing with CNN doing their breathless "breaking news: Trump tweet" shit.
The DNC email dump even proved that Hillary wanted Trump for that very reason.

          1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   3 years ago

The reason Bernie nearly took her out was because of Democrats voting for Trump while Republicans were voting for Bernie. Look at who won in open primaries and it is as obvious as a pile of shit on the living room rug.

Trump dodged a bullet by not getting re-elected. The inflation train has been building up steam since Bush the Worst started throwing money away on nation building and the 2008 bailouts.

Hell, Dubya started the whole "give away government money in hard economic times" trend in the first place. Remember those post-9/11 checks we got for like $250?

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

I'll say this for FDR, at least his welfare programs mostly had the expectation of work tied to them, and we got a lot of stuff out of the deal that is, in some cases, still around and being used nearly 100 years after it was created or built.

Today's politicians don't even have standards that high. "Here's money for existing." "Gee, thanks Dad!"

            1. Fats of Fury   3 years ago

Same with the old robber barons. They built schools, museums, libraries, et al with their own money. Nowadays billionaires are scheming to make life miserable for the middle class. I don't care how much money they have or what they do with it, but when they use it to force me to do their bidding it's time to bring out Madame Guillotine.

      1. Claptrap   3 years ago

Yet Beelzebub's campaign would be toast if Newsom could credibly tie him to the Republican Party.

        1. Stuck in California   3 years ago

I live in California. My vote no longer counts.

I'm to the point where it's literally "anything not a democrat" for me. Even if my vote DID count. And I hate the Republican party soooo much... but they're not democrats! If we're good and lucky we'll get Rs in congress after the midterms and nothing will get done because Biden can't compromise. That'd be SO good.

But for the next presidential election, Newsome is the worst of Democrats. Extremely progressive, even by progressive standards, and more than willing to cowtow to whatever the latest "thing" is, over and over. He might be guaranteed Ca's electoral college votes, but he's not going to look good to any swing voters anywhere on the national stage.

There are many reasons that violence is low in Denmark in general.

One is population size, another is the relative homogeneity of their demographic - both ethnicity / culturally speaking, and income stratification. They don't really have generational poverty over there. They don't have groups of people who are taught that no matter what they do, they won't be able to be successful.

Libertarian scholars have long argued that intellectual property and copyright protections are an unjustified legal privilege granted by the government to content creators. Simply reproducing an image or work doesn't stop someone else from using it, and therefore shouldn't be prohibited by law, the argument goes.

But if you're monetizing it and someone else created it, you actually ARE stealing from them. I don't see how so-called libertarians square that.

    1. Mickey Rat   3 years ago

The most valuable products of labor are intellectual property. The libertarian denial that intellectual property is a thing kind of denies property rights at all.

      1. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

And if I pirate a few movies and then sell digital copies for a quarter, I’m not hurting anyone. It doesn’t stop the producers from continuing to sell the movie, right? I didn’t steal THEIR copy.

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

A federal gun control bill passed by Congress last month expands background checks for younger gun owners, restricts who can legally buy firearms, and provides funding for states to adopt their own red flag laws.

I'm honestly surprised Russia's entire economy hasn't collapsed, considering pretty much the entire planet is refusing to do business with them outside of a few exceptions, even though it's obviously hurting.

Putin must have done more to disconnect Russia's economy from globalist dependence than I ever expected.

        1. Moonrocks   3 years ago

considering pretty much the entire planet is refusing to do business with them outside of a few exceptions, even though it's obviously hurting.

That's the thing, it's not the entire planet refusing to do business with them, it's the US, the EU, and then a smattering of other countries. Most of the world is still open to business with Russia, and in particular large economies like India and China are still fully open to Russian oil exports, so Russia can still milk its cash cow albeit at a slightly reduced price compared to global oil prices (but global prices have risen so much that Russia is still making more money off oil now than before the war). In addition, Russia has been preparing to get cut off from Western imports for years, and that's coming in handy now, although they're still able to supplement anything they can't produce themselves with imports from all the countries that aren't sanctioning Russia, namely China and India.

          1. Moonrocks   3 years ago

Also, those EU sanctions? They'll be gone when Germans start feeling their Climate policies bite them in the ass this winter.

"anything they can't produce themselves with imports from all the countries that aren't sanctioning Russia"

Yes. The US imports everything from China nowadays. So can Russia.

Aside from selling stuff to the West, I can't really think of anything Russia regularly bought from it.

          "pretty much the entire planet"

Brazil, China, Indonesia and India aren't, so that's 3.5 billion people.

What we're learning from this is that Europe and North America's economic clout isn't what it was a decade ago. Another thing that Western Citizens can and should remember to thank their establishment class for.

          1. Moonrocks   3 years ago

I'd argue it's not even that. Europe and America's economic clout hasn't been overwhelmingly large for a long time. It's just that our betters in the regime decided to start their reign by screwing over nearly every country that was nominally friendly with us.

Competent diplomats could have easily brought Brazil, Indonesia and India on board with sanctions and probably have been able to twist China's arm to some extent. But then again, there wouldn't be a Ukraine war with competent diplomats in charge.

    BULLSHIT!!!

My husband and I took one look at his online photo released by Chicago Tribune, and we both thought the same thing: yet another fucked up, broken beyond repair, 20 something whose parents couldnt have given a shit about their offspring. Im against abortion in all cases, but if adults can be screened before hooking up, and found to be irresponsible, self-absorbed, parents and will likely produce broken offspeong like Crimo, tubal ligation, vasectomy, whatever it takes should be required to prevent these mongrels from reproducing. They can have reversed surgical procedures if they demonstrate they are capable of being responsible parents.

We are seeing the fruit of the 1960/70s/80s "all about me" generation, producing kids who also produce kids who would make better utilization being fed to the sharks, than being let loose on our planet. These generations are absolute failures at creating well adjusted adults. Also, the type of rifle this punk used is irrelevant. There are thousands of high powered rifles in circulation in America. They dont shoot themselves anymore than Red SUVs run over parade watchers.

So tired of seeing the immature, mental midgets, personality disorder offspring that "adults" produced. Those parents should all be charged equally with the crimes committed, as should the Democrats who have unleashed massive violence and Marxist inspired revolution in our country.

Medicine is just as constrained by politics, group think and threats of being canceled as any other tribe. Plus, the options for physicians once they are canceled or excommunicated, are not great.

Get rid of the Feds reimbursing hospitals and medical groups, then physicians could do as they wish. Now, if hospitals and medical groups hope to get reimbursed for services rendered, they have to play along or else

So watching marxist celebutards trash the US on the 4th because they took a few Ls the past few weeks has been a delight. One of the commenters here pointedly observed that leftists don't actually like the US unless their side is winning, because they are loyal to a political cause, not the country (which also makes their "party over country" slogan so insincere--they only prize that principle when Republicans go against their own party, not the other way around).

Meanwhile, conservatives celebrated the 4th even though it's being run by a pudding-brained moron, and its cultural institutions hate their guts. Because they are loyal to the US, its history, and its traditions, over whatever political state the country happens to be in at the time.

Leftists hate the US, and when reality doesn't conform to their marxist historic determinism, they put that hatred on display for everyone to see. That makes them sellouts and traitors, not Americans.

    1. Ali Akbar Alexander   3 years ago

This is why my gay, libertarian ass was celebrating yesterday. Namely, to support its traditions and the “political state”. That’s the way libertarians should be. I’d suggest the new slogan of libertarians like you should be”well, the law is the law and if you don’t like it why don’t you move to Europe or California like all the other faggots.” That seems to be the ongoing sentiment of libertarians.

They are activist babies. And authoritarians. Its telling that anytime there is a decrease in authoritarianism they decry it as an existential crisis. Not allowing mask mandates was the end of democracy. States getting to decide their own abortion laws is the end of democracy. Florida not going full Fauci on lockdowns was a threat. NY not being able to significantly infringe on its citizens 2A rights was a threat.

Ha ha ha ha....that actually isn't funny because it would totally work for the progs as part of long term social justice equity codification. Crackers and non-plantation minorities get Pyrite Level Citizenship with 'state stewardship' (you have to declare why you voted for candidate X and that reasoning is fact checked with your vote potentially being thrown out or construed as an accidental mis-vote for the non-prog candidate which is then correctly given to the prog)

""WOMEN OF THE WORLD!" She wrote to her 2.1 million followers on Monday afternoon, "We are being stripped of our rights over our bodies, our lives and even of our name! They don't call us 'women' anymore; they call us 'birthing people' or 'menstruators,' and even 'people with vaginas.'" - Bette Midler

She was widely attacked by the left and trans activists for this statement. I enjoy watching them eat their own.

But this also shows why they are about to take a serious beating. This reaction from a lefty highlights just how far they have gone from normies. We are allowing essentially circus freaks to dictate the language the other 99.9% of the population uses because they emotionally blackmail the wine moms. Thats what this comes down to. "But theyll kill themselves!" The answer is "if they do, then they likely would have anyways, statistically"

Anyone with a shred of insanity remaining sees this stuff and shakes their head. Most people are happy to let you live your weird life. But they arent going to celebrate it for you. They arent going to start calling a vagina a "front hole", a penis a "strapless", a woman a "menstruating person" and agree that "men can get pregnant". This is all a weird combination of dystopian and childish magical thinking. But really, its an exercise in controlling language so you can control society. Everyone is noticing. Very few are going to tolerate this.

And the democrats pretend to be surprised that no one respects their pre-conceived hatred for the Bill of Rights.

    1. Michael Ejercito   3 years ago

      https://lbpost.com/news/city-council-to-consider-lbpds-new-military-weapons-policy

The Long Beach City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to approve the police department’s use of military weapons and equipment like armored vehicles, machine guns and less-lethal foam projectiles.

The Long Beach Police Department has used military-grade equipment for years, but the City Council’s approval is now required by AB 481, which Governor Gavin Newsom signed in September 2021. The bill mandates every law enforcement agency in the state to make public an annual inventory of any and all equipment it uses that was originally designed for the military along with its policy for using the equipment. To continue using the equipment, those documents must then approval by the department’s governing body—in this case, the City Council.

News orgs seem to be all in for decrying the use of "an AR 15 style weapon" and yet the police have released nothing about what type of weapon he used.

Listening to the videos indicates it could well have been an AR [you can buy them in Illinois but cannot possess them in Cook County or municipalities, like Highland Park], but just as likely an SKS or Ruger Mini.

  57. Michael Ejercito   3 years ago

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, a Democrat, said yesterday that only police should be allowed to own guns. Two police officers were wounded in a shooting in the city last night.

For two years, I have been told that the cops routinely hunt down unarmed Black men.

Now the same side making that claim is making the claim that only police should be allowed to own guns.

If cops are allowed to own guns, despite the claim that they routinely gun down unarmed Black men, how is it fair to not let the Crips own guns?

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

Now the same side making that claim is making the claim that only police should be allowed to own guns.

The total number of people killed in mass shootings in the last 40 years is around 1,000.

That's about 25 people per year.

The risks are extremely low. This is not something that needs any policy reaction at all. It would be nice if the press would stop sensationalizing these events, which (according to the criminologists) encourages copycatting. But even with the copycatting, the risks are extremely low.

    1. Michael Ejercito   3 years ago

      https://www.the-american-interest.com/2015/12/01/the-distorted-politics-of-gun-control/

[Pastor Michael] McBride wanted President Obama to make Ceasefire and similar programs part of his post-Newtown push to reduce gun violence. He had brought a short memo to give to White House staffers, outlining a plan to devote $500 million over five years to scaling such programs nationwide. His pitch to Biden that day was even simpler: Don’t ignore that black children are dying too.

In response, the vice president agreed urban violence was very important, McBride said. But it was clear that “there was not a lot of appetite for that conversation by folks in the meeting,” McBride recalled.

Later, other ministers who worked with McBride would get an even blunter assessment from a White House staffer: There was no political will in the country to address inner-city violence.

Moreover, Democrats increasingly see gun control as a wedge issue, and are therefore may be more willing to identify gun violence as a problem associated with their political enemies—white men in red states. Talking about gun violence in communities that vote overwhelmingly Democratic would not rally the base as effectively.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

And that's the dirty little secret--take out gang-related gun violence from the equation, and our stats are about the same as most European nations.

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

Lots of dirty secrets, like finding that states with the highest gun ownership rates have the lowest gun murder rates. Or that the strongest correlation with murder rates I could find when I complied and analyzed stats a few years ago was percent black population.

Last year Brazilian police killed 6133 people. It goes without saying almost all were unarmed. It is impossible to buy even a BB gun online. Search Amazon Brazil for any type of gun and you'll find books about the care and feeding of handguns, and a Chinese cigarette lighter that looks like a miniature gun.

No one believed her before the shootings. She once again, has demonstrated how well most Democrats deliver on their promises, or should I just say they're all talk and not interested in public safety, just their safety and their re-election prospects. The people of Chicago are getting what they voted for, good and hard. They should be happy, they're getting what they voted for.

The dead and wounded are brave patriots should be lauded for defending our second amendment rights. How we move forward will determine whether we continue to exercise the freedoms for which they so selflessly laid down their lives, including those too young to understand what their actions meant. The fear of gathering to celebrate in public can never outweigh the rights to bring guns to those same events. If we ever become so complacent that we stop worrying whether our kids will be me with a hail of gunfire at a parade, the terrorists will have already won.

    1. ElvisIsReal   3 years ago

LOL you think the guy bringing his rifle to this event was legal until he fired?
