Brickbat: Parlez-Vous Français?

Physicians groups, Indian leaders and others are speaking out against a law the Quebec National Assembly appears set to pass that would require healthcare workers to speak to patients in French even if the two could communicate better in another language. The only exceptions would be for those who attended English-language schools in Canada or immigrants who arrived in the previous six months. The bill would also require firms with more than 25 employees to certify they conduct business primarily in French and to take "reasonable measures" to make sure other language are spoken in the workplace as little as possible. The law would also mandate that employment and service contracts be in French, even if both parties would prefer another language.

In America when a customer complains that employees are speaking to each other in Spanish we mock him on the Internet. In Quebec you will be able to call the language police.
language police
You mean the Grammar Gestapo?
Thats "police de grammaire" to you, Anglophile.
Ahem, Gendarmerie du Grammaire, s'il vous plait!
d'accord.
Police de LA grammaire, if you know something

What could be worse than the French? French-Canadians, of course.
French speaking nations seem to have a thing for using the law for enforcing their culture. I used to find that amusing, and a bit on the tyrannical side.
On the other hand, a look at what's become of the cultures of other Western nations, including this one, is enough to make me think that perhaps the French are on to something.
It's worse in France. What is it about the language that deranges the mind?
When I was in France I went to a restaurant where the waiter refused to speak English to me. So my German host spoke with him. But the waiter did not know German, and my host did not speak French. So the waiter used English to speak with my German host, but would not use English to speak to me.
That day I learned all I needed to know about French arrogance.
Arrogant they may be, but I'll bet Louis XVI would still recognize France as France.
Whether Jefferson would still recognize America as America isn't entirely as clear.
Arrogant they may be, but I'll bet Louis XVI would still recognize France as France.
L'etat c'est Ali Akbar.
Geez! Are they so stupid that they wouldn't accept your means of payment too?
Fortunately, Slim Pickens didn't have that problem when France was still smarting from Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkey jokes 🙂 :

Surrender monkeys?
Some favorite lines from that time--
(1) A right-wing columnist dubbed a pacifist group in Ohio "Velveeta-eating surrender monkeys"
(2) A Boston pol at a St. Patrick's Day roast slanderously accused another pol of trying to have the Frog Pond in the venerable Boston Common renamed "Liberty Pond."
A lot of french have a very poor english from school. When a natural english speaker talk to you, it's complicated to understand as you will talk fast, eat some of the words with intonation and use common expressions of language that would be hard to understand if just translated.
It's actually easier to understand another non english speaker speaking english.
Fu toi, Sorcère-brûleur Nazi!
Pardon-moi: Sorcière-brûleur Nazi, puis que vous êst le tatillion de culteur!

You must think that boy has a purty mouth, huh?
Well, that punk-ass still wouldn't get a warning to "Get Off My Lawn!"
Fuck Off, both of you Witch-Burner Nazis!
They sure fooled me... It sounded like a Nazi song. I googled it to find it was composed in English for the Broadway play "Cabaret".

They did such a good job that some far-Right groups adopt it with a straight face.
Now you see why Nemo the Witch-Burning Nazi likes it.
Google trad sucks my dude.
Pour quoi? Il est un aspirant sorcière-brûleur et un Nazi. Allors 'sorcière-brûleur' et 'Nazi' sont les mots juste.

Turkey in the 1930s was worse. Ataturk and his followers were trying to create a new secular Turkish culture out of disparate largely Muslim elements. On top of the language rules there were dress codes. No baggy pants, for example, or unapproved headgear.
Ataturk did it all wrong. No Roman Alphabet or dress codes were required, just repeal of Sha'ria Law and replacement with a Secular legal code cromulent with Libertatian principles of defending Individual Rights to Life, Liberty, and Property...and Hawt Turkish Bear Bathhouses (optional to taste, of course) 🙂 :

Is Freedom Poutines a thing?
Previously called Potatoes Au Gratin.
It's horrible in general, but in the context of health care this is especially horrible, as people could *die* due to miscommunications.
Yes, but the right kind of people would die.
It's single-payer health care meets monoculture mania.
Their poutine their foot down.
The French, worldwide, are being dragged, kicking and screaming, at a SNAIL'S PACE, into a world where individual freedoms are treasured!
So where is that anymore?
If you boil the frog legs slowly enough, they don't taste so rubbery.
ayou'd have to kill them first. Fully-grown frogs don't stay in water of any temperature, contrary to the Urban Legend cited by Libertarians who should know better.
Great.
We have been taking in refugees from New York and California for years, now we will be flooded with Canadians.

Sounds pretty much like the rest of Canada today, only with a splash of French dressing.
If you like your culture, and you want to keep your culture, you're going to have force people to accept your culture. Eh?
Soon, speaking the wrong words will get you the electric chair.
French fried.
Only if the wind is blowing and the sun is shining.
Cava should just do the right thing and break up.
Canada should have done the right thing a long time ago: force Quebec to secede, then invade, beat the crap out of the Quebecois and force them all to speak, read and write English only. That would have prevented this crap from ever happening.
Why would you want to invade Quebec? You’d have to govern those people. Just leave them to their own misery.
Nah, dig up General Wolfe and kick their asses again.
La fasciste! What if la document or le table identifies as a transgender lesbian? Cheese and rice, don't they know that entire language is one of the most Anti-LGBTQIAEIEIO languages known to man?
Wait, why does the LGBTQIAEIEIO community not respect the cultural tradition of all the ancient, obsolete, gender forcing, dying language speakers of the past?
Fucking gender conjugationists and intolerant culture deniers!
Ils ont parfaitement raison.
Vive le Québec libre !
Surround it with a big moat and “liberate” it from Canada.
Would such a law be constitutional in the U.S.? If not, why not? Does forcing a specific language amount to “compelled speech” under 1A?
Yes, and freedom of speech and expression should include using any language, though, of course, that doesn't mean a right or guaranteed expectation to be understood. That requires an interpreter and that can be big bucks to pay.
"Yes" was the answer to the last question. Forcing use of a language would be compelled speech, so the answer to the first question would be "no" if I had a judgeship as one of The Supremes.
Also, requiring this of medical personnel in the U.S. l would be a restraint on their economic freedom under the 5th and 14th Amendment and the enforcement of this law in the U.S. would also violate security in "persons, houses, papers, and effects" under the 4th Amendment and violate medical confidentiality laws. This law would Constitutionally suck all the way around if imposed in the U.S.
I grew up on the Quebec border and my ancesters on my mothers side came from there. They are butt hurt over English speakers from Canada's other provinces but when you make it clear you are from the US they are good with it for the most part.
As I know, many French people struggle speaking English, so maybe that's the reason. Well, I'm glad I decided to learn French with a tutor on https://livexp.com/skills/french , even though I'm not from Quebec. But I feel like it may come in handy one day. And also, I have many French colleagues, I have to say that you're right about their arrogance.
