Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter is "on hold" pending a review of the proportion of spam accounts on the site, the billionaire investor and CEO of Tesla said on Friday.

Twitter deal temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of usershttps://t.co/Y2t0QMuuyn

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 13, 2022

Musk added that he was "still committed to acquisition."

Twitter has estimated that spam accounts comprise about 5 percent of the site's total, and Musk has indicated that he will hold the company to that. His comments could suggest an intention to back out of the deal entirely, or he might be trying to drive down the value of Twitter in order to make the acquisition easier, according to The New York Times.

Musk had recently indicated that if he does acquire Twitter, he will rescind the permanent ban of former President Donald Trump.

The Pro-Choice Caucus in the House circulated new talking points to Democrats on Thursday, recommending different language about abortion.

NEW: The Pro Choice Caucus has just sent out messaging materials to House Dems on Roe draft.

One of the recommendations: Don't use "choice." pic.twitter.com/nqVA8W1nWT

— Sarah Ferris (@sarahnferris) May 12, 2022

It's hard to argue that the purportedly "helpful" language is superior to the purportedly "harmful" language. Many pregnancies are "unexpected," but don't result in abortion, to take just one example.

If Democrats had conducted some polling and concluded that choice and safe, legal, and rare were unpopular ways to describe these issues, that would be one thing. But no. This framing seems to be the work of progressive activists who decided that choice "ignores the lived realities of people, especially Black people and people of color."

One wonders if the Pro-Choice Caucus will immediately rebrand itself as the Pro-Decision Caucus.

The baby formula shortage is making life difficult for many mothers across America. More than 40 percent of formulas are unavailable, according to The New York Times:

"Realistically, I think we're looking at several more months," said Dr. Steven Abrams, a spokesman for the American Academy of Pediatrics. "Even once that factory restarts, I don't think the situation will get better super rapidly because the shortages have been developing for so long."…

If you can't find your baby's typical formula, your first call should be to their pediatrician. Health care providers might be able to help you find samples, connect you with a local formula representative or point you toward a charity that can help, Dr. Abrams said. Your local Women, Infants and Children, or WIC, office might also be able to help you find options.

Local parenting groups can also be an important resource. As the shortage continues, regional Facebook groups helping parents find their preferred formula have been popping up.

The Cato Institute's Gabriella Beaumont-Smith writes that trade restrictions are a significant cause of the shortages:

One reason retailers are struggling to recover stock levels is the multifarious trade restrictions that limit infant formula imports. The United States subjects infant formula to tariffs up to 17.5 percent and tariff-rate quotas (TRQs); for TRQs some level imported are subject to a tariff with the excess subject to a tariff and additional duties. A few trading partners receive "special" duty rates where some infant formula imports are duty-free or receive lower tariffs and TRQs. Mexico is one of the few U.S. trading partners that has some duty-free access for infant formula, and uncoincidentally, is the top trading partner for U.S. formula imports. Though, in comparison to total imports from Mexico (worth almost $400 billion), formula imports are extremely low.

Absurdly, provisions were added to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to restrict imports of formula from Canada, supposedly because China was investing in a baby food plant in Ontario, and this new production might eventually enter the U.S. market (heaven forbid!). Thus, the provisions in the USMCA's agriculture annex establish confusing and costly TRQs on Canadian exports of infant formula, and the United States imported no baby formula from Canada in 2021.

Making matters even worse, infant formula is subject to onerous U.S. regulatory ("non-tariff") barriers. For example, the FDA requires specific ingredients, labeling requirements, and mandates retailers wait at least 90 days before marketing a new infant formula. Therefore, if U.S. retailers wanted to source more formula from established trading partners like Mexico or Canada, the needs of parents cannot be quickly met because of these wait times. Businesses also have little incentive to go through the onerous regulatory process to sell to American retailers, given the aforementioned tariffs and the relatively short duration of the current crisis.

Update (0750ET): Twitter shares are bouncing back now that Musk has clarified that the deal saga isn't over yet: on the contrary, Musk just clarified that he is "still committed to the acquisition".

    1. Overt   3 years ago

His PsyOps are quite advanced. The snowflakes at Twitter are going to be emotionally drained by the time he actually closes the deal.

Perhaps his goal is to get most of them to quit before he takes ownership.

No educated, informed, well-adjusted, reasoning person (oir regulator) considers Elon Musk credible. He is an impulsive, immature, proven liar and loose cannon.

Disaffected, on-the-spectrum, antisocial losers find him just dreamy, though.

Unlike Mark Zuckerberg, who should be in charge of the internet.

            1. Tony   3 years ago

Zuckerberg's problem is that he dropped out of college to become a tech billionaire and simply has no other life experience. He, according to accounts, has a stick up his ass about relinquishing power, even though everyone around him thinks he should do just that since he's not up to his own job. Certainly not up to the task of managing a global information platform that can change governments and cause riots.

I don't know for sure but I think Elon Musk's problems are more about mood instability along with just not being very smart.

Neither should be in charge of much of anything. No one person should have a hell of a lot of power in a free society, even if they aren't intellectually and emotionally stunted boys with toys. If it's necessary for people to have a lot of power, we place them in restraints known as regular elections.

              1. Truthfulness   3 years ago

When a man is doing a better job than the government on the electric car and space industries, that is not indicative with "not being very smart". It really helps that he actually believes in free speech unlike you and Kirtland, who want censorship.

Musk does not plan to have much authority over Twitter despite the ownership. So he's not breaking any principle you supposedly hold to.

                1. Tony   3 years ago

Could you people go one goddamn day not sucking the cock of some charlatan? It's embarrassing.

The Pro-Choice Caucus in the House circulated new talking points to Democrats on Thursday, recommending different language about abortion.

How is abortion not rebranded Trans Justice? smdh

    1. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

The problem with the pro choice position is that most people dislike full, unlimited abortion. The word “choice” becomes undesirable because it’s an accurate term for their position-that women just choose for literally any reason and with no restrictions on whether a fetus gets to live.

      1. Zeb   3 years ago

I'd be OK with it if the people calling themselves "pro-choice" were consistently pro-choice about things other than abortion. The time period of the choice may be constrained to the first few months or whatever, but the choice to continue a pregnancy still exists in that situation.

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

They are pretty consistent. Most progressives would like to use "choice" to avoid work, default on debts, and obtain things they want without payment.

          1. Zeb   3 years ago

Yeah, I guess. They lose me there. Insisting that others be forced to enable your poor choices is another thing.

            1. Nelson   3 years ago

Assuming poor choices is another dishonest narrative from the anti-abortion extremists.

              1. DesigNate   3 years ago

Zeb is referring to the poor choices of avoiding work, not paying your debts, and asking for the government to give you free shit.

              2. (Redacted)   3 years ago

Yes, considering babies to be human beings with a right to live not withstanding the mother’s wishes is the ‘extreme’ position. As opposed to rational actions, like infanticide.

        2. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

The whole reason the movement is called "pro-choice" is because they didn't think anyone would support them if they were "pro-abortion." People who think abortion should be legal still aren't in favor of it, they want it to be an exception for rare cases and not a primary method of birth control.

The reason they're struggling with the word "choice" is that it's become synonymous with "abortion," and most people don't like abortions. It's like saying "retard" is a slur and we shouldn't use it, but ANY term we use for the mentally handicapped is going to end up being a slur because it's not desirable. Call it "pro-choice," call it "planned parenthood," call it "Baby-Be-Gone," it's going to end up with a negative connotation because abortions are not desirable even in the circumstances most people will accept them (health of mother, rape/incest).

          1. Roberta   3 years ago

And "decision" is going to be better how?

            1. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

              ....

It's almost like that was my point.

          2. Zeb   3 years ago

Yeah, and that's a lot of why I will call myself pro-legal-abortion, but avoid "pro-choice". The people who want to make it out as some kind of positive and desirable thing are creepy as fuck.

          3. Nardz   3 years ago

The problem they're having with the word choice is that their ideology fundamentally rejects the concept of choice.

            1. (Redacted)   3 years ago

One of the ‘choices’ being infanticide…….

This is maybe one of my favorite things about English. Every 20 years or so we need to come up with a new term for the disabled because 'normies' keep using the latest 'new' term as an insult.

See: Idiot, imbecile, moron, retard, handicapped.......

            1. Square = Circle   3 years ago

Every 20 years or so we need to come up with a new term

I was still teaching English 20 years ago when "People of Color" started becoming common, and I told my students at the time "in just the way that "colored people" was the PC term 30 years ago, you will be told in 20-30 years that "People of Color" is racist, and you will be given a new term to use that you'll be told is not racist, but that one will be, too."

To paraphrase Ezra Pound, it's gratifying to reach middle age and realize you've been right all along.

              1. R Mac   3 years ago

I’m still waiting for an explanation why colored people is racist but people of color isn’t.

              Don't forget special!

            3. Outlaw Josey Wales   3 years ago

See: Idiot, imbecile, moron, retard, handicapped.......

Great example. I always found it interesting that the clinical labels for varying degrees of IQ, Idiot, Imbecile, Moron, Retard, turned to insults for lack thereof.

We still use them in different degrees. An idiot is close to being a normie, but with some dumb ideas. Moron - a real dummy. An imbecile, hardly worth engaging with and then forget about the retard.

Also the word dumb. Someone who couldn't speak. But later becomes someone who shouldn't speak. Dummy. Man you're dumb.

I agree with Square Circle on the people of color. Seems a mild twist on Colored but nowadays being 'White' is becoming the race to hate and/or apologize for being. What happened to Negro?

              1. R Mac   3 years ago

The only real acceptable term should be "healed," but even if the cure is discovered and even if harmless wnd fully consensual, that would be lambasted to the high heavens as "Ableist Violence."

          6. Nelson   3 years ago

Because choice is a terrible thing? The only people who think "choice" has negative connotations are those who believe abortion is, universally, a bad thing. Those who think abortion is, situationally, a good thing are perfectly comfortable with it. And most people are comfortable with abortion being a choice.

            1. DesigNate   3 years ago

Because they aren't actually pro-choice. They are pro-abortion.

You can tell this because they still wage the war on drugs, try to pass laws regulating the size of a Big Gulp, and like fucking with anyone who chooses differently then what they think they should.

          7. (Redacted)   3 years ago

Yes, it’s totally ok to abort a retarded baby, but don’t dare use the word ‘retard’ because it’s impolite.

"The problem with the pro choice position is that most people dislike full, unlimited abortion."

When we had the "peaceful protests" some of the first things looted out of the stores was formula, followed by diapers, laundry detergent, diabetic test strips, Viagra and so on. Hard to trace and pretty much instant money.

Now it's all in locked plastic cages that need someone from half-way across the store called to unlock it and then escort it to the register where the customer checks out. Even then, when the customer changes theit mind on where to check out, the xashier has to run to where it is. Sometimes, someone else gets it anyway, by hook or by crook, then the circle of life starts again. /sarc.

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of Russian Oligarchs and all the odious apparatus of Putin's rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight on Facebook, we shall fight on Twitter and Youtube, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our social media island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight at the logins, we shall fight on the landing pages, we shall fight in the posts and in the forums, we shall fight in the archives; we shall never surrender. And even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this social media island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the network, armed and guarded by the British Intelligence would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

According to Wikipedia, Biden won by GA 11,779 votes.

Widespread fraud not required to fake fewer than 12,000 votes.

      1. creech   3 years ago

Biden also won because he had the fortune to run against a human lightning rod. Then, to compound things, the rod runs off at the mouth and costs the GOP at least one Senate seat. Anyone observing Biden's "campaign" could charitably believe that fraud had to have been involved (how does he get more black votes than Obama?) yet his opponent had something to do with it too.

        1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

That rod running off at the mouth was the main reason the voters supported it. Trump got more votes in 2020 than any previous presidential candidate.

          1. Nardz   3 years ago

He increased the votes he received by 20%.

            1. Cronut   3 years ago

Biden also won because he had the benefit of a cabal of leftist activists who worked behind the scenes to "fortify" the election.

              https://time.com/5936036/secret-2020-election-campaign/

Joe Biden has been a mediocrity his entire career. There's zero way, even against Donald Trump, that he got more votes than Barack Obama without "assistance."

Especially since, as noted above, Trump expanded his vote share by 20% AND chipped singnificantly into voter demographics that democrats needed to win.

There's enough "there" there to warrant a real, serious investigation into how one of the most lackluster, medicre, uninspiring candidates managed to grab more votes than the first black POTUS.

              1. Nelson   3 years ago

There have been literally hundreds of serious investigations, headed by pro-Trump Republicans as well as.moderates and Democrats, that have all found the exact same thing: nothing. Because Trump got beaten fair and square.

There have been literally hundreds of serious investigations,

And we're having this discussion because ANOTHER one turned up actual evidence of the cheating that the left bragged about committing in the article about 'fortifying' the election.

And it will be ignored because the right refuses to hit back.

They're wanting the left to go 'okay, you got us' but the left won't do that. They don't care how many have to die to keep them in power--just so long as they have power.

            2. (Redacted)   3 years ago

True. It makes sense that Trump would gain votes. I really wish that some of these water-carriers would show even an ounce of contrition at how wrong they have been to defend this disgusting administration.

On vaccines, they repeatedly deflected from criticism about mandates by insisting that vaccinated people don't catch or spread the virus, up until it was clear that this was wrong. So then they moved on to mushy-socialist nonsense about taking up hospital beds.

On CRT, they insisted CRT wasn't happening in schools. Until even Reason is showing examples of actual curriculums being taught, and the NEA teachers' union insisting that it must be taught in school.

The same is true with gender-bending queer theory. At first it was not happening in schools, and then it was just exposing kids to ideas until we start getting actual examples of teachers not just "bringing up" these topics, but teaching them as truth.

Now yet another of their "Nothing to see here" handwaving falls apart. We see that in fact when the NSBA asked the DOJ to investigate parents like terrorists and the DOJ said "We're on it", it actually wasn't just to hold some meetings. They really are sending the FBI to talk to parents to intimidate them from exercising their 1st Amendment rights.

They don't even bother to defend their statements any more. They just pretend they never said them in the first place, and instead freak out about the "reaction" or try to change the subject.

How long before they are proven wrong on the DBG as well? Two weeks? Two Months?

YES, lefties, the Biden Administration *really* is that bad. The Democratic party *really* is falling into pure authoritarianism, where they believe government appointed experts ought to decide what is allowed to be spoken, taught or consumed. If you don't turn to your peers that you endlessly defend, and tell them to knock it the fuck off, you are going to find yourself in a dystopia before long.

It wasn't widely reported, but apparently an art teacher at a middle school up in Wellington, Colorado has been recruiting kids to a tranny-conversion seminar--run by an incredibly fat dyke activist and supported by one of the school board members--disguised as an "art event" that flat-out tells kids who just happen to be going through puberty that, if they feel "uncomfortable" or "different" in their body, it means they're transgender, AND encouraged the kids to lie to their parents about what the event was actually about.

Daily Fail had a pretty decent write-up on it, and of course the local shitstain Denver media has been radio silent on the whole thing.

How Zuckerberg Used a Tax-Exempt Foundation to Help Biden Fix the 2020 Election
    https://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/2022/05/how-zuckerberg-used-tax-exempt-foundation-help-david-horowitz-and-john-perazzo/

The existence of such a regulation is meaningless, however, if it is not enforced. Consequently, this ban on campaign activities by “charitable” organizations didn’t daunt Facebook billionaire and Democrat Party patron Mark Zuckerberg and his wife when they plotted a massive campaign to swing the 2020 presidential election in favor of the Democrat, Joe Biden. The Facebook couple donated $419.5 million to two leftwing tax-exempt foundations with the intention of tipping the result to Biden by launching “get-out-the-vote” campaigns focused on Democrat precincts in battleground states.

A rarely mentioned fact about the 2020 election is that Biden eked out a victory by perhaps the narrowest margin in history — .027% of the 159 million votes cast. This was a margin easily created by a strategic influx of campaign cash coupled with orders to spend the money on massive numbers of paper ballots, which could be harvested from “drop boxes,” which, as Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary 2000 Mules shows, were repeatedly stuffed by Democrat operatives in the middle of the night.

All these millions of Zuckerberg dollars, underwritten by American taxpayers, drew no attention from I.R.S. Commissioner Charles Rettig or the I.R.S. investigating teams whose responsibility it was to see that taxpayer supported operations like the Zuckerberg “charities” were not intervening in American election campaigns with the idea of shaping their outcomes.

In 2020, the Zuckerbergs donated $69.5 million to the tax-exempt Center for Election Innovation and Research (CEIR), whose founder was formerly a director of the leftwing People For the American Way, and $350 million to the “Safe Elections” Project of the tax-exempt Center for Technology and Civic Life (CTCL). The title “Safe Elections” refers to the cover for Zuckerberg’s fraudulent operation, which he presented as an effort to protect voters from COVID-19. The three founders of CTCL were former co-workers at the Democrat-aligning New Organizing Institute. The conduit Zuckerberg used to funnel his $419.5 million to CEIR and CTCL was yet another tax-exempt nonprofit, the California-based Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The Silicon Valley Community Foundation supports get-out-the-vote campaigns for the Democratic Party.

On receiving Zuckerberg’s funds, CEIR and CTCL distributed the money, in the form of “COVID-19 response” grants of varying amounts, to election administrators in some 2,500 municipalities in 49 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. The alleged purpose of these grants, according to CTCL, was to help create conditions where Americans could vote as safely as possible in the midst of the deadly coronavirus pandemic. This could have been accomplished by renting football stadiums and other sports arenas that would provide enough space for “social distancing” and would have been a worthy tax-exempt objective, if it had been the actual purpose of the project. But it wasn’t.

Neither CEIT nor CTCL had ever before experienced anything even remotely resembling the size of the cash influx they received from Zuckerberg for the 2020 election cycle. For example, over the course of the entire prior history of CTCL - a small, unremarkable organization founded in 2012 - its yearly revenues from contributions and grants had never once exceeded $2.84 million. That high-water mark represented a mere eight-tenths-of-one-percent of the astronomical sum donated by Zuckerberg in 2020.

Despite their self-professed “non-partisanship,” CEIR and CTCL allocated their Zuckerberg-provided funds in a highly partisan manner, which conformed to the election strategies followed by Democrat operatives across the country to make election fraud easier. The goal of Zuckerberg and the two organizations was to pump massive sums of money into voter-mobilization initiatives in specific cities and counties that had traditionally voted for Democrats, so as to maximize the likelihood that large numbers of Democrat voters in those places would cast ballots in the 2020 elections. Meanwhile, places that traditionally had voted Republican received far less money — or in some cases no money at all. The CEIR and CTCL campaigns were highly targeted efforts to boost voter turnout in Democrat districts to a degree that would be substantial enough to overcome whatever level of voter turnout Republican districts in the same states might experience.

Many of these paid activists also tied the staff and dollars for election officials to illegal rule changes for the election. The dollars were conditional.

    2. Overt   3 years ago

While I do not think 2000 Mules was persuasive, there is no doubt that this initiative disproportionately favored blue districts over red districts. And it disproportionately did so in swing states. Even *if* you believe there was no actual fraud- that every ballot delivered was the god's honest reflection of an american citizen's will, this should *still* be considered a terrible breach of American trust.

One of the biggest foundations of the electoral system is equal treatment between districts. Democrats have been going to court for YEARS insisting that elections were unfair because certain districts did not have enough resources to conduct elections. And now they have flipped the script. In 5 cities in all america, they poured tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to get every single voter they could find to deliver a ballot. But everywhere else in the country, voters were left confused and confounded as their precinct tried to cope with changing legal challenges and health directives.

Flip this around. If it had been Red districts that were receiving massive funding to go out and gather ballots from a majority republican populace, while inner cities were left to stand in lines, the usual suspects would have been apoplectic.

Believe what you want about the fraud- I still have not seen evidence that there was widespread fraud that could tip an election. And that is the problem. Even *if* we rule out fraud, if we don't mandate that these private players fund state precincts equally, instead of targeting specific Likely-to-be-blue voters in heavily blue districts, this will continue to happen.

      1. JesseAz   3 years ago

Why do you think it wasn't persuasive? Honestly curious. The harvester from Yuma, Arizona is now working with authorities under immunity to show how spread it was there. There is no question mail in ballots surged, there are videos of people dropping off many ballots, etc.

Michigan just had a conviction on a guy claiming ballots he dropped off were given to him by citizens. The citizens testified they never met the man and their addresses were wrong.

So there is a lot of evidence the things in 2000 makes happened. We still don't know how big.

        1. Overt   3 years ago

"Why do you think it wasn't persuasive?"

2000 Mules uses a bunch of not-even-correlation to imply causation, and sprinkles in a few specific examples of potentially illegal activity to try and prove a broad trend. The entire case is that they have identified "thousands" of mules based on geo-fencing. They never prove that these people are actually mules.

The only thing that the geo-fencing data proves is that there were people who regularly traveled to non-profit offices and ballot boxes. I have experience with geo-fencing, and their case is plausible. They show examples of the suspect behavior and one is very persuasive. But as many critics have pointed out, it is also possible to net false positives in your population if you design your regions incorrectly. One deeply persuasive example is not an indictment of the entire population. (Again, their claim is that there were thousands of these harvesters- enough to swing an election.)

          I) The best way to confirm the hypothesis would be to sample a set of these "suspect geo-fence IDs" and then compare them to video footage. I know this ID was at ballot box A at 9am, Box B at 12pm, and C at 1am. Do I see the same person stuffing ballots at this time? How many of my random sample set can be confirmed in the same manner?

II) If I cannot get ubiquitous video data, then I am left to doing the opposite. Can I use video to identify an example of one person stuffing ballots at multiple places and then mine my geo-fence data to identify which cell phone this was? Can I then compare it to others to uncover more examples?

But they do not do this. They *say* they have correlated video with the cell phone data, but they crucially do not show it when that would be *the* piece of visual evidence that seals their case. How damning would it be to have that map of a cell phone going from box to box, put beside 2 - 4 time-synced surveillance videos showing the same person stuffing ballots at the same time the geo-fence data shows they are there? It would be the type of mic-drop moment that shuts up every critic...and yet they didn't bother to include this crucial visual.

Not only do they not link Geo-Fence data to video data, they decline to actually back up their claims that the same people were stuffing ballots in multiple places. Again- this is the type of red flag that you show in your "Expose". But they don't. They don't show a single instance of a person going to multiple ballot boxes in a day. The best evidence was provided by that tweet from D'Souza today showing a guy going twice to the same ballot box, which is a different problem (if still concerning).

Now, it could be that they are just incompetent video editors, and forgot to show the ample evidence that validates their accusations, but I think it is more likely that they didn't show that evidence because, uh, they don't have it. Either way, they failed to prove their case.

As you know, I was deeply skeptical of people like Sullum claiming "Nothing to see here!" shortly after the election. But if True The Vote really had the evidence, they ought to publish it- not insist they've got it and release something else. The easiest thing to do is to post their alleged petabytes of data (or the sample they selected) and their alleged video data. But absent that, if you are going to put out an accusatory video, show the god damn evidence.

"The harvester from Yuma, Arizona is now working with authorities under immunity to show how spread it was there. "

If that yields results, then that will be evidence I want to see.

African Americans have been promoted above the other non-white races as *the* oppressed, so they have to be mentioned first and then they can include the others in whatever is being discussed. It's for the same reason "black" was granted a capital letter while all the other colors have to wallow in their non-capital states.

    3. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

Also: "Black people and people of color"? Doesn't the second cover the first?

No. Literally no. Black people are almost like a nation unto themselves. People of color are other vaguely defined minorities.

For instance, the Church of England is now talking about teaching "black theology". Literally no one knows what that is. What is "black theology"? There's Japanese theology, there's Islamic or Jewish theology. But no one quite knows what "black theology" is. Yet they'll be teaching it.

"They are now pro-abortion. They are pro- "no personal responsibility"."

Neither of those things are true. The first assumes pro-choice is only supported by people who personally don't have any oroblem with abortion, which is and always has been demonstrably false. And the second is a judgemental, self-righteous, based-in-ignorance generalization/demonization by those who want to pretend that only bad people need abortions for bad reasons.

But honesty was abandoned by the anti-abortionists decades ago, so it shouldn't be a surprise.

Does this mean that not getting a beach house in Malibu, a 6 week vacation to Monaco, or a new Cadillac Escalade with rims is also sexist and racist?

    1. JimboJr   3 years ago

Also was looking at the numbers recently and its actually worse than I thought (if you are a black person that would prefer to be alive)

In the last 2 decades the numbers for white vs black abortion (overall numbers, not percentage) have almost evened out. Black women, despite being only 15% of the female population got as much or more abortions than white women.

Not only can you not make the argument that this is just some sort of luxury good that the whites get, because black people are clearly getting WAY more (in terms of percentage) than whites...but it honestly approaches some kind of scary eugenics.

The side that histrionically throws around the term "genocide" must be completely not paying attention. The black population has essentially been decimated and kept down due to this policy. I mean 15% of the population is getting AS MANY abortions as the group that makes up >50% of the country. How is that not akin to actual genocide?

      1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

A lot of black people have been saying that.

When the party of slavery, Jim Crow, the Black Codes, the KKK, segregation, redlining, race-based eugenics, etc., spends terrific effort putting abortion clinics in every black neighborhood and telling them what a good thing it is, you can forgive them for being suspicious.

      2. Jim Logajan   3 years ago

Live births per 1000 women per year in 2020 was 59.2 for black women and 53.2 for white women. Source:

        https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db418.pdf

So despite the larger abortion rate among black women, there is no "genocide" going on with black women. (An odd term to use for a voluntary procedure.) Black women are obviously getting pregnant at a higher rate than white women simply because they aren't using contraceptives. Find out why that is and what is needed to change that and the issue wouldn't come up re "genocide".

        1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

"So despite the larger abortion rate among black women, there is no "genocide" going on with black women."

"We're killin' every black rat we see, but they breed so fast we're not affectin' the numbers none, so it ain't genocide"

An uptick in the worldwide Jewish birth rate in the 1940s wouldn't mean that the holocaust wasn't a genocide.
I can't understand how you could remotely think that your disgusting argument was a rebuttal.

          1. Jim Logajan   3 years ago

The stats indicate black women are using abortion over contraceptives as a means of birth control. Are they being forced to prefer one over the other, and if so, who is engaging in the force?

Genocide involves the use of force. Jews weren't persuaded by words to march into concentration camps - they were forced.

I cannot help it if you are disgusted by my recital of stats - that's your emotional problem to sort out in your mind.

            1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

Genocide involves the use of force

What bullshit, a complete and utter ahistorical fallacy.

The Young Turks initial pogroms on the Armenians demonstrated that. Sultan Abdul Hamid had earned a lot of global opprobrium for his attacks on the Armenians. The Young Turks who overthrew him wanted to Turkify the whole Ottoman Empire, but didn't want to lose initial external support over it. So they started with eugenics and ended up with a full on genocide.

The Nazi's too started with abortion programs under Aktion T4 long before they moved into full bore genocide.

Bigots have always resorted to trickery, astroturfing and incitement when they don't have the authority and capability or worried about public perceptions.

            2. Davy C   3 years ago

          1. Jim Logajan   3 years ago

I've posted the source of the stats that show black women are giving birth at a greater rate than white women. That is sufficient to debunk the claim of genocide.

            1. mad.casual   3 years ago

Not, in any way, nearly enough to make up the difference or offset the overall losses absolutely or proportionally.

Especially in the background of overall falling birth rates. You could argue that, with rising birth rates, the 'genus' subject to 'genocide' would still survive or even thrive, just not thrive as much; but with overall falling birthrates, the minority 'genus' is guaranteed to reach zero first.

I think they are going to have a rug pull moment when Roe gets shot down and they see people are actually very on board with reasonable restrictions and not at all on board with no restriction abortion.

They are banking on people being on their side because most people right now dont want Roe shot down as they think it will mean the end of abortion. Once they actually realize their state is just limiting it to first trimester (which will be the case in the majority of states I suspect) they are going to see people are actually just fine with that. The rest of the world is already there, anyways.

      1. Overt   3 years ago

Even these claims that "a majority of americans favor *some* level of abortion" are based on polling that is highly subject to interpretation of the question, as well as preference cascades.

Remember that over a period of a few years, americans went from being generally in favor of Gay Marriage bans to being overwhelmingly against them. This preference cascade was a massive shift over a short time because it turned out that it really wasn't an issue that a lot of people wanted to fight about once it was removed from the culture wars.

I think we will find that abortion is the same. Generally the public is willing to tolerate them for early pregnancy, and that includes many, many democrats who previously kept their mouths shut out of party loyalty.

And if you notice, they're running the exact same playbook--they're pushing the "majority of people support abortion" line to try and get a preference cascade going for abortion-on-demand, as opposed to the nuanced view that most people actually hold.

I think we will find that abortion is the same. Generally the public is willing to tolerate them for early pregnancy, and that includes many, many democrats who previously kept their mouths shut out of party loyalty.

Except abortion and Roe has basically been the litmus test for nearly every Supreme Court justice that's been nominated since Bork. The fact that Senators still have to ask about it 50 years after Roe shows that the issue as a culture war touchstone is far from settled.

Very surprised, to be honest. Outside of the media and the crazy left, most normal people see abortion outside of the first trimester as immoral.

So, the proggies overplayed their outrage, and the protesting outside the SCOTUS homes made it even worse. I know Bill DeBlasio thinks the GOP is hurting their mid-term chances, but I don't think this makes a difference either way. In fact, I think it makes GOP voters happy to see their party actually deliver on something they care about. Too bad that doesn't happen for spending issues. GOP is nearly as bad as the Dems.

Unless, the GOP makes a real blunder with their messaging, which is always possible. GOP is the party of stupid for a reason.

I have to agree. A couple of the more triggered lefties at work have piped up, but overall this has blown over way quicker than anything involving the COVID stuff. I was surprised myself to be honest. But I think its setting in that we will have most states with a post 1-trimester ban, and that's probably in line with most people's thinking on it. Almost no one's life will be significantly impacted tbh

Eh, I'm not so sure on that. It may depend on how the court ruling goes, but I highly suspect nearly all blue states that haven't already gone to abortion on demand like Colorado, New Mexico, and New York will do so rather quickly, while red and purple states will have restrictions ranging from "almost never" to "none past _____ weeks outside of rape, incest, or the life of the mother is in danger."

If the purple states are smart, they'll start pushing hard to convince Congress to make the morning after pill a true OTC contraceptive, as well.

Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter is "on hold" pending a review of the proportion of spam accounts on the site

Even if he is really committed to the buy, this is a great troll to get Twitter to release their actual spam account numbers.
