Ukrainians Find Refuge in Previously Unwelcoming Places
Nearly 4 million people fled Ukraine in the first month after the February 24 invasion, and thousands have left each day since.

The mass displacement of Ukrainians triggered by Russia's invasion constitutes "the fastest growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II," according to U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. Nearly 4 million people fled Ukraine in the first month after the February 24 invasion, and thousands have left each day since.
As of March, most fleeing Ukrainians had settled in Poland. Smaller numbers found refuge in nearby Hungary, Slovakia, and Germany. Ukraine's tiny neighbor and Europe's poorest country, Moldova, has welcomed more than 350,000 Ukrainian refugees.
Politicians across Europe have extended a helping hand to these migrants, even in nations where refugee inflows previously have been unwelcome. "These are not the refugees we are used to," said Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov. "These people are Europeans. There is not a single European country now which is afraid of the current wave of refugees."
Problematic though that distinction may be, cultural, linguistic, and historical similarities have indeed helped Ukrainian refugees find willing hosts in Europe. Ukrainians do not need to secure visas before arriving in Ireland, and they may work there and access public benefits once they arrive. The resettlement effort in Poland has been largely bottom-up, with thousands of citizens offering to accommodate refugees in their homes. The European Union as a whole will provide refugees with short-term residency and work authorization, among other benefits. Many of the Ukrainians who have been forced to flee are staying with relatives who left Ukraine after the 2014 Russian invasion of Crimea.
The U.S. is making some accommodations as well. On March 3, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas gave Ukrainians temporary protected status, sparing an estimated 75,100 Ukrainians in the U.S. from deportation and allowing them to work legally. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced in early March that it would halt deportations to Ukraine, Russia, and seven other countries in the region.
The Biden administration can do more. A special student relief designation would relax academic requirements for Ukrainian students in the U.S. and allow them to work while attending school. More efficient visa application processing would help Ukrainians hoping to join relatives in the United States. The current backlog saw 140,000 family-based green cards—62 percent of the total cap—go to waste in fiscal year 2021.
President Joe Biden finally announced in late March that the U.S. would accept up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. But the low number and lack of a detailed intake plan are disappointing, and they do not reflect the moral imperative the U.S. has to help Ukrainians.

Literally every single one should end up in the US. Because here they can provide cost-effective labor for Charles Koch, the billionaire who funds Reason.com.

When every migrant crisis is the fastest growing crisis ever - none of them are.
My immigrants protect you, your immigrants protect me.
they do not reflect the moral imperative the U.S. has to help Ukrainians.
The US has no moral imperative to help anyone. Our constitution and it's protection ends at our border.
How do you expect to achieve global socialism and social justice with that kind of attitude?
The current Administration only believes we have a moral imperative to help dark-skinned and/or Muslim refugees. Light-skinned Christian refugees can pound sand.
Fiona-bot: "Mass immigration is the best."
Putin: "You're welcome."
Why pay taxes when you can be an economic migrant and get more than you ever paid in!
Renounce your citizenship, vacation for a month south of the border and illegally cross for those fat bennies!
Libertarians recognize freedoms, like freedom to move and associate. Conservative Farmers For Trump hate that kind of thing. They literally invoke communitarian ideals to argue against it. Then they come on here and go 'why is Reason so Leftist? Waaah.'
Why are you just a Farmers For Trump Republican?
Libertarians recognize freedoms, like freedom to move and associate.
Yes. Too bad you're not a libertarian.
What's wrong with farmers, Shrike? Not everyone wants to fifty-cent for Soros. Some people have to grow the ingredients for your Hoho's and Dingdongs.
Libertarians also recognize property rights. And within that freedom to associate is a respect for community property. Does that make them "communitarians"?
Non idiots recognize welfare states and understand economic liabilities of non paying influx of people against those promised benefits.
Sadly you are an idiot.
Just like the leftists they hate, they judge things by who, not what. What a person says or does is immaterial. What matters is their politics. If someone they perceive as a leftist (that includes libertarians because most of us didn't support Trump) says or does something, they oppose it. Doesn't matter what was said or done. Likewise if Trump supporter says or does the exact same thing they will reflexively support it. They don't need to know the details. The politics of the people involved are all that is needed to make a decision.
I call it Political Tribalism.
Now do the left and Trump juice.
I’m not a farmer, but that’s not really an insult either way.
You really need to explain your bizarre hatred of farmers? What is up with that?
The men are barred from leaving though.
What a radical idea - the first place Europeans should flee to refuge is another country in Europe. Here's an idea just as radical - the first countries to offer help to Africans should be other African countries. Ditto for the Middle East and Asia. It certainly makes more sense than flying Ukrainians, Afghans, or Nigerians halfway around the world to the United States.
I have this great idea for a new TV show. The premise is simple. Just toss a liberal celebrity into the ring with a couple of Marines, and spend about an hour filming him getting the living shit beat out of him. Wouldn't it be great, every night you can turn on your TV and watch some loathsome parasite like Gavin Newsom or Chuck Schumer getting a Front Street Face Lift? If that's not a hit, I don't know what is!
Why are all these people leaving Ukraine when they're winning the war.

Canadian sniper Wali is back in his homeland after spending 2 months in Ukraine and Donbass.
Like other members of so called Foreign legion he’s noted:
• total lack of communications
• lack of weapons
• f????????cked up UAF command
• huge ???????? losses
• most mercenaries defected

Lacked a detailed intake plan, you say?
Perhaps snatching Ukrainian refugees from the bosom of its surrounding neighbors is trickier than we thought?
Or perhaps those refugees are uncomfortable taking 'refuge' in a country an ocean away when they can take refuge in a country where a short bus ride can get them back home if things get better?
Or perhaps the surrounding nations are better equipped to deal with refugees from a somewhat similar culture and more native speaking ability?
Or perhaps moral imperatives are not so clear cut with bright lines around their borders...er, social constructs.
Hey! Refugees, like people of every victim type and class, have no idea of what is best for them. Thank the gods that we have elites eager to guide them.
It's actually pretty amazing the Poles and Romanians are taking in Ukrainians, considering the Ukrainian behavior targeting those peoples not too long ago.
It’s all just one big happy world now!
Problematic though that distinction may be,
Let's take in 15% of our population with a group of people who are mostly economic migrants, believe that not only homosexuality is wrong but should be a crime, punishable by being thrown off a rooftop.
Problematic distinction indeed.
"We should create a distinct definition of refugee and migrant, and hold on to those definitions tightly"
"Well, the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia's always on my mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mind
Oh, come on!"
I visited Ukraine once. Almost every single woman I saw would be a solid 9 here in the states.
Also, it looks like the US didn't need to take in many refugees after all - their *neighbors* helped out.
Nothing about "Doctor" Jill over there watching out for the family interests?
