Time for an Operation Warp Speed to Develop Pan-Coronavirus Vaccines
Meanwhile the FDA dawdles over second boosters as new COVID-19 wave approaches

Cases of COVID-19 are again rising in much of Europe due to the spread of the BA.2 version of the omicron variant that appears to be 30 percent more infectious than its already highly contagious progenitor. And the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is, as usual, way behind the trajectory of the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, the agency has decided to take its sweet time again and only begin to consider next month the emergency use authorizations for further booster doses of the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines. By that time, a new wave of infections caused by the spread of the BA.2 version of the omicron variant will likely be cresting in the United States.
Let's take brief look at the history of FDA dawdling. Based on preliminary positive results, Israel approved COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for its older citizens in July 2020. Taking those data into account, the Biden administration urged the approval of COVID-19 booster shots in mid-August. This plan apparently sparked "anger" among FDA bureaucrats who, according to Politico, feared that "political pressures will once again override the agency's expertise." Even as the delta variant wave of infections began rising in August, the agency's experts finally got around to approving boosters for older Americans in late September. It took until late November for the FDA's experts to authorize boosters for all adult Americans just as the omicron variant tsunami was taking off.
Health agencies are administering booster shots of the vaccines that were formulated back in 2020 when the original coronavirus variant was dominant. The good news is that when used as boosters those vaccines are still effective at preventing hospitalization and deaths from subsequent variants including the omicron variants. However, as the coronavirus virus evolves the vaccines are becoming less effective at preventing mild to moderate infections. It is notable that based on preliminary efficacy data, Israel began offering a second COVID-19 booster shot to its older citizens on January 3, 2022.
While the omicron variant is significantly more contagious than earlier variants and more easily spreads to both people previously infected with earlier variants and vaccinated people, it seems to have evolved such that it causes less severe illness. The risks of hospitalization and death from omicron variant infections are be lower than those stemming from earlier variants, but unvaccinated folks are still considerably more vulnerable to the worse outcomes of omicron COVID-19 infections. However, there is no guarantee that future COVID-19 variants will continue to become milder over time. The virus has plenty of scope for further evolution as it spreads among humans and many different species of animals including white tail deer.
Given how fast the COVID-19 virus mutates and spreads, a strategy of developing variant-specific vaccines is unlikely to forestall future waves of infections. For example, Pfizer announced on January 25, 2022 that it was launching a clinical trial of vaccine targeting the omicron variant. That was a week after omicron cases had peaked in the United States.
Way back in May 2020, three researchers at National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) published an op-ed in Nature arguing that with respect to developing universal coronavirus vaccines "the time to start is now." As it turns out, the time to start for the NIAID was 15 months later when the agency got around to awarding three academic institutions a little over $36 million to research pan-coronavirus vaccines in September 2021.
The Trump administration's Operation Warp Speed could serve as a much better model for incentivizing pharmaceutical companies to greatly speed up the development and deployment of the candidate pan-coronavirus vaccines on which some are currently working. In a recent op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, two immunologists point out that the global cost of the COVID-19 pandemic is an estimated $16 trillion, compared to the cost of developing a typical vaccine at $1 billion. They note that even a $10 billion vaccine is minuscule compared with the pandemic's toll.
Among the promising pan-coronavirus candidate vaccines are the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research's spike ferritin nanoparticle COVID-19 vaccine; Osivax's nucleocapsid vaccine targeting a protein widely prevalent among coronaviruses that is unlikely to mutate; and Inovio's DNA vaccine encoding variant sequences of the spike proteins the virus uses to invade cells.
It's way past time to focus on quickly developing and deploying pan-coronavirus vaccines.

Why are we still treating this like the black death?
Fauci needs more airtime.
OK, but where was he these last few weeks?
I assumed (hoped) he had the Communist Chinese Virus, or at least that the democrat demographic people had determined to dump the old white guy for the menstruating person of color.
But no, he resurfaced spouting the same old bullshit. WOLF!! WOLF!!
The last thing anyone needs to do is urge the FDA to rush anything. Had they followed the normal practice and time line, when we got data on the vaccines, it would have more accurately stated the efficacy by age group, and would have been more acceptable. Now we all stop reading at "FDA".
I wouldn't' believe any of the federal three letter agencies if they issued a joint statement that the sun rises in the east.
Had they followed the normal practice and time line, when we got data on the vaccines, it would have more accurately stated the efficacy by age group, and would have been more acceptable.
Had they followed the normal practice & timeline, we wouldn't have a vaccine until POTUS 47 is in office.
We still don’t have a vaccine.

Democrats are losing.
^ WW3 isn’t giving Biden the bump in the poles he needs.
I heard the Polish Navy has new submarines with screen doors.
They keep them closed though.
A polish farmeris tilling his field. It's another beautiful spring day when suddenly his plough hits something. Upon inspection he sees that it's some sort of golden lamp. He dusts it off and a genie comes out of it and says to the humble polish farmer "Thank you for awakening me. I had been trapped for over a thousand years and as a reward I shall give you three wishes".
The farmer of course is shocked by this and asks the genie to prove what he claims. With the snap of a finger from the genie, all of the farmers fields are ploughed and planted and with another snap it's back to normal. The polish farmer is very excited and thinks of all the wonderful things this genie could do to improve his life and the lives of his people. After thinking for a few days the farmer tells the genie "I finally know what my wishes shall be."
"Great!" Says the genie.
"First, I wish china to invade Poland!", exclaims the farmer.
Perplexed, the genie asks, "But this is Poland, is it not?"
"Yes", replies the farmer, "And I wish that China would invade."
"...Okay."
The genie snaps his finger. Days later sirens are heard all over the country and planes black out the sky as they carpet bomb the country. Refugees are pouring through the country roads looking for food and shelter and a place to burry their dead children and loved ones. The polish farmer is smiling ear to ear and snickering as he helps these poor people any way he can.
"Well, what is your second wish?"
"I wish Poland to be invaded by china!" Shouts the farmer through his laughter.
"That wish has already happened, what is your second wish?" Said the genie, slightly annoyed.
"That is my second wish." Laughed the farmer
"Very well, your wish is my command." And the genie snaps his fingers. Again, a few days later, the sirens that still stand are heard throughout the country. Chinese soldiers and war machines quickly and surgically sweep through the country, burning and destroying the rest of the metropolitan areas. Again, though fewer, refugees clog the country roads looking for food and shelter. This time the polish farmer is crying from laughter and helps these people any way he can.
The genie reappears, though visibly worried by this farmer. Anxious to be done with this man, he says "What be your third wish?
Laughing the farmer says "I wish China to invade Poland!"
"I mean I always heard you people up north were a little nuts but this is insane. Why not rebuild the damage done? Or wealth for your country to rebuild or food for the starving people?"
"No, I wish China to invade Poland!"
"As you have said, so shall it be done." And the genie snaps his fingers.
Days later, the last siren near the man's farm is warning what few people left of the invasion. The Chinese forces come by plane, boat, and armored vehicles destroying what little left there is and even burning the farmers fields before they leave.
The farmer is rolling on the ground, laughing uncontrollably, hardly able to breathe. The genie can't figure out why this man wanted such terror brought upon his own people so he asks the farmer "Sir, our contract has expired and I am returning home, but first, I have to asks, why do you hate Poland so much?"
The man stops laughing and his face becomes very serious as he barks, "How dare you?! I love Poland more than my own family and life itself. I love my country more than any other person to have existed!"
Confused the genie asks "Then why did you wish for China to invade Poland three times?"
The farmers face lights up and his uncontrollable laughter resumes. Between gasps he tells the genie "Because, they had to go through Russia first!"
Ronnie needs to stop shitting his pants over a fucking cold.
Amen. This is such a tired narrative.
This is the most ridiculous article I read recently! The writer thinks we need to incentivize pharmaceutical companies? Are you effing kidding me? What rock has this guy been under for the past couple of years at least? This entire thing has been about profits for big Pharma. I am shocked at the reason would even publish something like this it is so stupid.
Let's disband the FDA, NIH, NIAID and the rest of the federal medical alphabet, and use the resultant funds to develop it.
And maybe do some serious testing on Invermectin to really settle the debate there. It's cheap, so that should be pretty inexpensive to run.
Debate's already been settled. Ivermectin is safe and effective when used prophylactically (not when disease has advanced far enough that hospitalization is required).
Ronald Bailey... is not smart.
Just get 20 different shots and test.
Just think of the possible effects of sequencing it. It will work great. Test, shot, test, test, test, shot 2, test, test, test, test, test, booster, test, test, test, booster, test, test, test, test, test, test, test, booster. If you follow Ron's favorite sequence, you should only catch COVID 3 times, it will be very mild a few of the times, and if you aren't in a nursing home, survival rate will be well north of 99%.
I chuckle a little every time I hear an asthma or RA treatment commercial where it says "Talk with your doctor if you're recently vaccinated or plan to get vaccinated."

The same day that Colbrelli collapses with cardiac arrest at the Catalunya Tour.
Are we gonna keep pretending this is normal?
[Link]
I have had noticeable heart tingling issues since the vaccination. Colbrelli was amazing last year so he probably had a bit of doping though.
"Cardiac tests on Italian rider Sonny Colbrelli have shown no signs of “concern or compromised functions”..."
So nothing visibly wrong with his ticker, maybe he was struggling with massive systemic inflammation following a largely ineffective gene therapy or something?

Or 4 different shots and 20 tests.
That depends on how much Big Pharma is paying him.
If you mean he's an hysterical, pant-shitting germophobe who can cite scary numbers that are irrelevant to reality, yes.
Holy shit talk about missing the whole point.

I think it's time to start treating this like a normal cold/flu virus. Natural immunity is better and longer lasting than that from the current vaccines. Most people have nothing to fear with omicron.
And promoting diet, d3, etc.
Fauci owes.
Pure fantasy. Time to finally cure cancer and poverty and death itself.
Taking those data into account, the Biden administration urged the approval of COVID-19 booster shots in mid-August. This plan apparently sparked "anger" among FDA bureaucrats who, according to Politico, feared that "political pressures will once again override the agency's expertise."
As an Engineer, I have a response to the FDA. I don't care if you Approve it or Disapprove it. Make a Decision. Quit sitting on your ass for months doing nothing.
You SAY they're "doing nothing" but they are getting paid more for sitting on their asses for months than they would be for making a prompt decision.
One route is beneficial to the public, the other route is beneficial to FDA bureaucrats and Big Pharma.
If I were a bettin' man...I'd be looking for a stupid bettin' man to take the "prompt decision" side.
Not willing to give up on this power gold mine.
"Based on preliminary positive results, Israel approved COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for its older citizens in July 2020."
Should be 2021. Proofreading seems to be a dying art.
And it accomplished nothing.
There are some very pointed questions to be asked about the last operation warp speed which got us a slew of EUAs on potentially dodgy vaccines, in particular the J&J which, according to some experts (hey, NYT, I can do that too) should have been pulled, let alone ever gotten an EUA.
Operation Warp Speed 1.0 is what got us the FDA (on a very narrow margin) voting to allow the booster and vaccine for very small children, something that caused several top FDA officials to resign. A very un-talked about story.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the idea of sclerotic regulatory agencies speeding things up, but when we combine Operation Warp Speed with Operation Mandated Medical Procedure, I get a little jumpy.
Not to mention Operation Liability Exemption.
No, OWS had been long dismantled by the time boosters were getting discussed. OWS primarily saved time by doing steps in parallel. The booster authorization/recommendation happened by simply skipping inconvenient steps. Oh, the CDC's ACIP committee refuses to recommend the booster to healthy <50 year olds? Let's use Omicron as an excuse to let the CDC director bypass the committee and make it a universal recommendation.

The best of intentions.
What could possibly go wrong?
Interesting one from Vinay Prasad (recently discovered by Reason, you're welcome, by the way).
Interesting topics he covered: mRNA vaccines are NOT like your regular flu vaccine.
Point to ponder: When you get your third, fourth, fifth booster, you're still getting the Alpha sequence of the covid strain, yet the promised genius of the mRNA vaccines was that it was supposed to be easy to plug in a new sequence into the vaccine and you'd be off to the races with the new dominant strain, yet we're not seeing this.
To expand on mRNA vaccines not being like your regular flu vaccine, he was speaking specifically to boosters, and yearly boosters. The normal flu vaccine you got in 2017 was not the one you got in 2018, and not the one you got on 2019, etc. This of course leads into the second point he made above.
For those that don't want the video, here's an article he wrote on this subject from which came the video.
And so on...
Not only this, but, they were supposed to be able to stack up to 20 variants on the same shot, or even 10+ different types of viruses.
So that, for instance, a kid's childhood immunity schedule might potentially drop from a couple dozen shots to something like, 2. Which would have been a huge benefit for a lot of people.
I didn't know that, but if that were the case, indeed. That would be awesome.
I'm pretty sure that's some pie-in-the-sky bullshitting. Like if we take the edge of what existing technology can do and, using the scientific principles of 'forgetting what we know' and 'unbridled optimism', assume the mRNA vaccines can do it and do it better, we could get X, Y, and Z.
Uh, yeah, the reason you get two (or more) doses of most vaccines isn't because your immune system doesn't respond the first time and you really just needed to turn the volume up to 11, Nigel. The reason you get them at the times you get them has nothing to do with the vaccine itself and everything to do with your risk factors of both disease and reaction to the vaccine.
So, it was the 'self-driving-car' of vaccine technology.
but you produce lots and lots of antibodies from the boosters. they have to do something, right?
Except that switching up the vaccine for the new strain appears to do nothing for those previously vaccinated (see pp. 44).
In addition to that, the Pub Health apparat may be directly responsible for the COVID gyrations from Omicron on out. Basically, the promise of mRNA has been completely undone by various bureaucratic mindsets, and we may have ended up with a worst-of-both-worlds outcome.
I was an early and enthusiastic adopter of the vaccine, but my children will never, ever be vaccinated against COVID. The risk/reward case has been turned on its head post-Omicron.
The only vaccine we really need is against control-freak-ism.
In Ronald Bailey's case it may be too late.
Indeed. Why is a Reason article proposing yet another expensive, doomed to fail, bureaucratic boondoggle?
Especially over a cold.
You geniuses are going to either get very sick or die.
The EU/UK/Ireland/South Korea/Israel data that is piling up shows that a large percentage of your hospitalized and dead are VACCINATED.
I have no idea the disconnection with media and the ACTUAL Pfizer Documents being released showing how TERRIBLE THE VACCINES WERE DURING the trials.
Oh yeah...I do now...Multiple companies and Gates paid BILLIONS to all media to give a skewed view of the vaccines under teh guise of "Saving" people.
What was the data saying? For certain age segments for every 1 person saved you hurt or kill 140.
Statistically, once you're past about 60% vaccinated, most of the sick or dead will be (assuming the vaccine is low efficacy, which it is).
Your point is correct, though, that their own documents show massive failure and huge reaction rates.
I'm sure this is a typo, but it needs fixing.
"Based on preliminary positive results, Israel approved COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for its older citizens in July 2020."
I tried pointing out this error too, but nobody at Reason is paying attention. This is a fairly glaring mistake, and should be obvious to anybody with even the most elementary understanding of the pandemic timeline.
The FDA should dawdle over the "second" booster, since the "first" booster showed such limited effectiveness.
The first shot seemed to help, and the second shot gave very good protection from serious symptoms and death -- for the original variant. Against Delta they weren't quite as effective. Against Omicron far less so.
The reason the "first" booster only lasted for 12 weeks is that it wasn't designed for the new variants. It was just a temporary souped-up response initiator to the original version. Why jack in a "second" (fourth) dose when it no longer does much? How long will the "second" booster last this time, 6 weeks?
mRNA tech has NEVER delivered a safe product. Moderna, publicly at it the longest, has been frantically experimenting with a list of diseases to find one deadly enough to make up for the huge string of side effects their therapy causes.
More importantly, the WuFlu ship has sailed. This is a rapidly mutating virus that you cannot develop a "cure" for, and the likelihood of it mutating into a more lethal, rather than less, is infinitesimal.
Majority vaccinated Israel reports a majority of patients sick with Covid are fully jabbed and boosted. This follows the UK also reporting 9/10 hospital Covid cases were jabbed.
And it only comes with 1,291 side effects!
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2022/03/israels-covid-19-cases-surge-83-1-vaccinated-infection-rate-rise-highest-level-month/
A pan-coronavirus vaccine? Really? Wasn’t the first vaccine supposed to be that? The virus mutates a lot and very quickly. Any such vaccines developed will quickly become obsolete. Like developing a vaccine for AIDS or the common cold, this is like nailing jello to a tree - not effective over time. We would be smarter to learn from our mistakes and put our money and scientific horsepower behind developing cheap, safe, over the counter treatments to mitigate symptoms rather than chase the Holy Grail of a vaccine. Fauci donned his suit of armor in search of an AIDS vaccine in the 1980s - he is still looking for that Holy Grail 40 years later.
The jab was tailored to produce a singular spike protein from the early strain, not even a whole viral sample. You can test for previous infection in the jabbed because there are so many other Covid immune markers besides that one spike.
And we already have cheap, over the counter treatments in repurposed medicine, the dreaded horse paste (Ivermectin) foremost among the options if taken early or as a prophylactic.
"Developing cheap medicine" may as well be an oxymoron at this point.
Pros/Cons of this essay:
- Pros: Author recognizes that "data" is a plural noun.
- Cons: Pretty much everything else.
/snark
Dust hasn't even settled on the first jabs, and Ronald is eager for round two.
More "vaccine" apologia from Bailey.
First, this new outbreak in Europe isn't COVID19. It's mutated enough that it should be named something else. It's way more contagious, and way less harmful than COVID19.
Second, these "remedies" aren't vaccines. They are permanent genetic transformations that are of unknown efficacy and even less known effectiveness. Strike that. The effectiveness of these "vaccines" is known: they aren't effective at anything positive. We have initial data that they are fatal to some people.
