In Leaked Audio, CDC's Rochelle Walensky Privately Confirms She Won't Relax School Mask Guidance
Walensky acknowledged "limitations" of available studies but told a congressional committee "our guidance currently is that masking should happen in all schools."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have no plans to change their recommendation that all U.S. schools require students to wear masks, according to an audio recording of a closed-door House Energy and Commerce committee briefing obtained by Reason.
"The CDC provides guidance," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky can be heard saying on the recording. "Our guidance currently is that masking should happen in all schools right now."
The Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hosted the briefing, which took place virtually on Tuesday and was attended by Walensky, White House COVID-19 adviser Anthony Fauci, and Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Dawn O'Connell.
Walensky faced criticism—from members in both parties—that the CDC's guidance is confusing and out of step with human behavior at this stage of the pandemic. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R–Wash.), the committee's ranking Republican member, challenged Walensky on the science behind school mask mandates, noting that the Arizona study oft-cited by the CDC in support of masking kids has been thoroughly debunked by The Atlantic.
"What we see in the U.S. is an outlier as it relates to the mask mandate for our children to go to school," said McMorris Rodgers. "[The World Health Organization and UNICEF] have both recommended against masking for kids under the age of five because it's going to do more harm than good. For children ages 6 to 11, they think that we should be considering other factors like learning and social development. My question today, my one question, is Dr. Walensky, will you commit to update your guidance by Friday to allow children in person without the burden of masks?"
Walensky made no such commitment to a timetable for abolishing school mask mandates. She acknowledged the "limitations" of the Arizona study, as well as other studies the CDC has relied upon to inform their guidance, but rejected any near-term changes on masking in schools.
"They all have limitations, and that's important to recognize because we are not randomizing schools," she said. "We have to control for whether there are windows, ventilation, and other activities happening outside of these schools. So all of these studies have limitations. But they are for the most part uniformly pointing to that when there's a lot of disease out there, the masks are preventing that disease and preventing that transmission and because of that we are able to keep our schools open."
Rep. Gary Palmer (R–Ala.) also asked Walensky how she could justify the agency's school masking guidance.
"Explain why we need to keep allowing school districts to impose a mask mandate on kids," he asked.
In response, Walensky defended the agency's current guidance, but also noted—perhaps with some frustration—that local jurisdictions were free to disregard it.
"I will also say that guidance is just guidance, and all of these decisions, we've continued to say, have to be made at the local level," she said. "As cases come down dramatically, we have deferred our guidance to the local jurisdictions."
Given that many coronavirus-cautious jurisdictions are seemingly waiting for the CDC's permission to relax masking requirements—in schools, especially—this answer prompted some outrage.
"That's not acceptable," said Palmer.
It wasn't just the Republicans; Rep. Anna Eshoo (D–Calif.) expressed considerable bafflement that the CDC was incapable of being clearer about what levels of caution were still appropriate.
"You hear the word confusion over and over again," said Eshoo. "But here's another one for you: masking. You know where I live in the Bay Area, the peninsula in the heart of Silicon Valley? Schools, cities, towns, counties: you're saying one thing, and they're doing something else. And this is a highly educated area, too. I trust our public health officials here. So my first question and my second point to you, Dr. Walensky, why do we have to be on two different tracks? Isn't there some kind of public health consensus about this?"
Walensky replied by citing the national figures—170,000 cases per day, 2,200 deaths per day, etc.—and was immediately cut off by Eshoo.
"When you use the national figures, that's not a snapshot of where we are, so can you take that into consideration as you're giving me an answer?" said Eshoo.
"Absolutely," said Walensky. "We know that all of these decisions have to be made at the jurisdictional level. So not only do we report the national data, but we have to report them at the jurisdictional level, because we know that we ask the jurisdictions to look at their local context, to look at their local cases, to look at how their hospitals are doing, to look at their local death rates. And that is exactly what I think is happening across the country in a phased way. Many different policies are rolling out. Some are saying they're removing masks. Now some are saying they're removing masks at the end of the month. Some say we're removing masks at the end of the month, but not yet for schools. And so this is really happening at the jurisdictional level. And what we're recommending is that given right now, where we are for cases, that the masks should still stay on."
Eshoo responded with skepticism that people were checking the CDC website to figure out which policies were merited based on their local jurisdictions' numbers.
"I think that's confusing, and I do think that it puts a dent in CDC credibility," said Eshoo. "Credibility is everything in this. Who are you going to pay attention to? So, I mean, it goes to that and I think it's troubling. They're making it sound as if, you know, all of these local entities, public health directors, whatever, are not paying attention to the CDC. That's the way it looks to me. All right? That's the way it looks. That's the way it sounds. So I don't know. What should I tell my constituents? Oh, look at their website. I don't think that's a good answer, honestly."
The three government health advisors fielded questions from Democratic and Republican committee members on a variety of other subjects as well, including the approval of fourth booster shots, the availability of therapeutics, and the possibility that COVID-19 emerged from a lab. Republicans grilled Fauci about the National Institute for Health (NIH) grant that funded coronavirus research in Wuhan with the same vigor that they demonstrate in public. Rep. John Joyce (R–Penn.) asked Walensky about the CDC's refusal to recognize immunity acquired from a previous infection as legitimately protective. He noted that given recent findings, so-called natural immunity should count as satisfying the federal vaccine requirement for health care workers.
"During the delta surge, case rates for those who had previous infection and no vaccination were substantially lower, four- to fivefold lower, than those who were only vaccinated," said Joyce. "Hospital rates followed a similar pattern. Given these findings, will the CDC commit to updating the guidance to recognize the value of natural immunity? And will you advocate to alter the [Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] vaccine mandate for health workers, which you pointed out right now are gravely affected by COVID-19, so that natural immunity will be recognized as satisfying the requirement in order to ease the pressure on health care staffing throughout the United States?"
Walensky gave no indication that she would support that change.
"Thank you for that question and for recognizing our work and trying to understand the importance of infection and immunity," she said. "We published that report in [Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report] and actually late last year, we also published a scientific proof that demonstrated a review of dozens of papers on the importance and the and the impact of infection-induced immunity. Two key limitations from that report were that they were done during the delta surge. All of these data were collected during the delta surge and did not reflect omicron, which we now know requires a higher level of immunity. And secondly, that they did not reflect the period of time when boosters were available. People were not necessarily up to date with their vaccines, and the vaccines had actually likely been waning."
Walensky did not specifically mention school masking in her public remarks at the White House the following day, though she did signal that the CDC intends to issue more flexible guidance on masking in general. So far, however, she has given no indication that any update to the guidance would apply to kids in schools—and even behind closed doors, she has reiterated the agency's position that all schools should have mask mandates.

Trust the "Science."

Pure tyranny. Walensky is Justin Trudeau's secret sister. These people are evil dictators.

WAllensky is worse than anyone Trump had on his COVID team. She’s a blathering idiot, yet the media continue to give her a pass despite everything she’s said turning out wrong.
This woman is like giving an intern from the local college the responsibility of flying a rocket ship. Maybe they know how it works on paper, but if you put them in the pilot's seat, they'll crash in to the ocean.
That analogy is inapt in so far as it represents a self limiting problem.
In reality these people only fail upward.
^ Bravo!
like Biden.
No Presidents ever fallen UP stairs.
Fuck Biden
Par for the course with Biden appointees. Academic backgrounds, zero experience outside the cloister. The level of incompetence is objectively mind boggling, at least the incompetence is "diverse".
Calling her an "idiot" gives her too much credit. She is deliberate and calculating. She is a totalitarian goon that knows exactly what she is doing and following her marching orders.
She absolutely is lying. Studies "uniformly pointing" to masks working? You mean except for the ones that don't.
Any studies that do not arrive at the desired conclusion can safely be hand-waved away as misinformation.
You keep posting stuff like that and they're going to throw Joe Rogan in jail.
Don't worry, Joe Friday will ignore those studies and keep quoting the CDC verbatim as proof of how wrong you are.
Anyone so clearly in thrall to irrational fear, as demonstrated by wearing two damned masks after the vaccination and boosters she pushes, cannot be trusted.
DOOOOOM!
Morbo?
So much science happening at the CDC!
They've got the best science! Freshest in town!
BTW, it didn't require 'leaked audio' for us to know this. Those of us who pay attention knew this was going to be the outcome. Just like those of us who pay attention know that they're going to "approve" the vaccine for toddlers, no matter what the safety profile is.
We didn't need it. But it's nice to have proof, and kudos to Reason for actually providing it. Beats the shit out of most of what they and other older media sources usually do anymore, at least.
Basically, some real journalists need to keep these liars feet to the fire. Since we don't have any, at least Reason is doing it. Hopefully someone else picks this recording up and it gets spread.
Indeed! Especially if this was a Reason special!
Every time I think Roby can't sink any lower he pulls a stunt like this,,, and compleatly redeems himself.
Seriously he is one of 2 or 3 actual journalists that work for reason
It is an opinion magazine. And their interns are very obviously hired to push an agenda. I mean, I wish Fiona well and she writes well, but I'm pretty sure most of her article topics are in lockstep with OBL here in the comments section.
The reason I read here more than occasionally was an excellent article a couple years ago about a supreme court decision. Well researched and written. Journalism can happen here. But it only seems to happen fortnightly, not every day.
Maybe it's a case of a stopped clock finding an acorn now and again, or maybe it's Roby exercising his actual old-timey journalist chops. But, in case it's the latter, I want to recognize it and the good it does for society.
Robby also might have just found the file in his inbox 😉
Robby's been much better lately. I haven't seen a "to be sure" out of him in over a year.
I thank the comments section for pulling that off so Soavely.
We're going to need some bigger lamp posts.
+1
I read the report, actually I skimmed the report, from the FDA panel 27 October, 2021. It left me more questions than answers on why the vaccine was approved for 5-11 yo.
And to this very subject: Dr. Vinay Prasad on how the CDC abandoned science.
That dude needs to keep his tongue in his mouth if he's going to appear on video. He's hard to watch.
Thankfully he writes well.
I don't need to see him talk to hear what he's saying. He does, however, need to flood his studio with Sulfur Hexafluoride or autotune his pitch down a little bit.
And to this very subject: Dr. Vinay Prasad on how the CDC abandoned science.
Thank you. It is apparent Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, professor at Stanford University Medical School, was right all along. Shame on CDC and Democrats for shoving down the throats of Americans politicized science and medicine.
He was more than right but I can't think of the words to express it.
CDC didnt.
CDCs Politically appointed managers did.
CDC and NIH both published papers proving N95 masks dont work 5 to 100% of the time.
" porosity of N95 masks"
Odd how such sciencers as Walensky and FauXi never discuss the science.
Fuck both
So... data collected during Delta doesn't count because Omicron.
Except the policy was in place before even Delta.
And Omicron is different, blah blah blah.
Except, masking studies, which are very weak, which she KNOWS don't show even an iota of a dent in any numbers outside of a laboratory, were all done before Omicron, which is insanely more infective than Alpha was, or the flu, ore pretty much anything short of the Measles. So those studies are all bunk too, because Omicron, right?
The CDC and other governmental agencies were a cluster fuck two years ago, we all know this. But Wallensky is a whole new level of horrible. I have said it before, the moment she was crying on television (when infections, deaths, hospitalizations were all plummeting) she should have been relieved. I wouldn't trust her to lead a church group in a silent prayer, much less a major governmental health agency during a pandemic.
All I can say is, thank God I live in Texas.
For now. The human virus that CA exports is going to change TX. It's already happening here in AZ. Might be a slow process but the policies they are enacting in CA is in part a way to influence their useful idiots to leave and salt the earth elsewhere.
That isn’t a long term fail safe, the democrats have to be dealt with, decisively.
And yet a majority of Democrats will still defend the CDC and these mandates. The idea that this nonsense is driven by the "right" politicizing these issues is laid bare with these revelations. The right is in absolute agreement with Independents. If you are arguing that prudence and caution are the way to go, you are in the fringe. You need to look around at your agreeable friends and realize that you are all members of a cloistered, leftist bubble, and understand that, indeed, you are the baddie.
Skulls on their uniforms.
At the opera last night -- the OPERA, where they are as leftist progressive as it is possible to be -- the director pulled out the old "take care of one another" line while announcing we all had to keep our masks on. Grumbling from the seats around me "Oh, get over yourself with that horseshit."
This was after they had some mask-nazi usher in my section waving a paddle that had "Masks On!" on it in the face of people who weren't appropriately compliant then walking away smugly after they reset their chin diapers.
Even the liberal wing of the octogenarian set, who are theoretically those we all have to protect, is sick of the pseudo-religious dogma and pandemic theater. These mottos are so far past their expiration date that even covid "survivors" can smell how rotten they've become.
I visited my friend at yesterday at NRCS. Some lady from FSA got after me for not wearing a mask, while she wasn't masked. I put a mask on my pocket (note the ones they were handing out weren't N-95) and waited for him to finish his conversation then we went outside and finished our business.
Note: I visit almost weekly, as my friend is also my mentor, and I stop by his office for advice frequently, and no one has ever criticized me before for not masking.
Simple: stop complying. Fourth Amendment protection, violation of Civil Rights Act. Stand up, "olds" (I'm one) and cut the crap. The entire Scamdemic is a simple test of YOUR compliance. When the jabbed start dropping from aids I promise not to say "I told you so".
These Leftist hemmoroids like to play identity games.
By mouthing Talking Points, they manufacture an association with authority by ' appealing to...."
What they really are is mouth breathing assclowns.
Everyone needs to wear two or three mask at all times. Plus, everyone needs to get their fourth booster shot so that no one will have to wear masks. Children under five should wear six masks so the teachers can be safe as they zoom their work sheets explaining to the young boys that "1 plus 2 equals racism, and don't you want to change yourself into a girl (but let's not mention that to mom or dad)."
Then we will have happiness and everyone will have all the money they need because those evil rich people will be required to send you all their money each day.
Easy Peasy! Utopia has been reached.
This isn't Robby's fault, but out of fifteen articles published today, the ones about marshal law being declared and democracy suspended in America's northern neighbor... are zero.
SYRUP FOR THE SYRUP GOD!
HONKS FOR THE HONK THRONE!
Don't forget the silence on Ukraine. Nationwide cyberattacks and mortar fire on residential zones.
Not saying anything until the Trump connection is established or what?
They're too busy covering the D.C. police breaking into a congressman's office.
Right?
And the Capital Police being just dandy with one of their officers beating an already unconscious person in the head with a baton.
I for one welcome our new masked overlords.
Yes. Along with Blue Helmets, target ID is much easier.
"But they are for the most part uniformly pointing to that when there's a lot of disease out there, the masks are preventing that disease and preventing that transmission and because of that we are able to keep our schools open."
Why were all the mask-if-you-want schools able to keep schools open, then? How do they get away with this?
No one ever seems to ask and they never say... exactly how much of a difference is there with or without one of their policies. If there is a 0.0005 chance of getting infected and the policy cuts that in half, I don't care. All you ever hear are generalities... it's safer, it cuts the danger, it decreases/increases the chance. If I take one step forward in a 2000 mile trip, it matters not.
There's no evidence or any study which showed they worked. None. Zero. The narrative has imploded.
Actually, they can tout a 2% reduction in Covid deaths by isolation strategies.
Worth it. Not even one.
And no tiger attacks. Added benefit.
I carry my tiger rock everywhere. No tigers.
It was .2%.
You're right. I was overly generous.
Actually, it wasn't even a reduction of deaths, it was simply a delaying of deaths, e.g. if the restrictions were in place for 6 months it gave the at risk only less than a day longer to live.
The implied assumption is that any measure is justified if we can save one person from dying from Covid. No weighing of pros and cons of mitigation efforts.
save one, destroy the entire economy.
Yay, that.
The most scientifically sound study the CDC cites for their masking recommendations is the Bangladesh study that found a whopping 13.5% reduction in transmission with masks. The rest were garbage studies.
Most of them involving only small groups, and then they dismiss any studies that contradicted their findings as being, for the most part, to small to draw a conclusion. Yet, studies that contained 15 people wasn't to small for the CDC to cite when it supported their arguments. This is how you know they are practicing biased science.
Dr vinay prasad: the cdc is really just trying to save face at this point. They'll claim the situation on the ground changed so they can lift the mask mandates. They can't just admit that they were wrong for the last two years.
Rochelle walensky can't just turn off the mandates. So she has to hold fast until some event or statistical blip occurs allowing her to say "OK, we've met a metric, masks worked, now we can lift the mandates."
https://youtu.be/NALzWyASruw
This is it exactly. They staked the entire election on covid. Joe was supposed to shut down the virus and then he didn't. Now they have to try and gaslight the country into believing that, whenever they do lift mandates, it was always the plan and they succeeded.
Yep. They're going to give credit to the NPIs and take credit FOR the NPIs. That's why we have to remind them exactly what the NPIs actually got us -- death and destruction, without altering the course of the virus.
notice theyre timing it with the public kickback...
Face saving, posturing move to pretend to be ahead of the curve.
I think it's like the situation in Ukraine. The Whitehouse has been predicting an invasion for months, and has basically painted Putin into a corner, and themselves into a corner. Putin basically has to invade now, or he looks weak to the world and his own country, which dictators can't afford to do.
I am dubious if the Russians ever meant to invade. But we've gotten to a point where he can't afford not to invade now.
Biden is warning that it will be painful if he is forced to sanction Russia because of the rise in the price of gas and oil. It was like he didn't even realize that is already happening.

Biden's handlers are up to something here, but I can't figure out their long game. They're either politically incompetent (which I can't discount) or they have some other political or financial goal in mind that is of greater value to them than the House (and probably Senate) as well as a host of other races.
See the project Veritas video with the fda guy. It is all about money.
I don't know that they're up to something, so kuch as they're just scrambling to figure out how to salvage anything from their shit show of a majority. They staked everything on covid and BBB. Joe was gonna SHUT DOWN THE VIRUS and save humanity. And then he didn't. More deaths under Biden than Trump, inflation out of control, jobs numbers are abysmal, they can't pass a fucking thing through Congress because two democrat Senator won't play ball, now the Canadian Truckers are scaring the shit out of democrat governors who are changing their policies out of step with the Administration, approval is in the shitter on every metric. And I'm sure they owe a whole lot of Fortifiers a whole lot of favors for their work Fortifying the Election.
I think it's like Dr. Prasad says, they're going to find themselves some bullshit stat or metric and pretend they met their goal and saved the world. They're going to try and gaslight the country into believing this was ALWAYS the plan.
"They're going to try and gaslight the country into believing this was ALWAYS the plan."
This. They are playing for time right now looking for the right moment and lining up their messaging with their media networks and operatives.
That is why every day the Whitehouse is beating the war drums in Ukraine. They can't now have the Russians not invade, but an invasion would spike energy prices, and now the don't know what to do.
I suspect they see the upcoming report of the Jan 6 commission as their ace in the hole. It's supposed to come out this summer, right before the election. It will tell dark tales of "insurrection". They may even pursue the legal action some lefties have spoken of, using the 14th Amendment to claim the Republicans who "supported the coup" are disqualified from office.
In short, they'll change whatever rules they have to.
I think that would be a serious miscalculation on their part, but not at all surprising at the same time. Wasn't there a poll not long ago that said independents don't really care about J6 and their concerns are inflation and supply chain issues? And that they're also souring quickly on covid?
Maybe that's the plan, but it's a TERRIBLE plan. Unless it's just a step toward goading conservatives into action- violent or not- so you can Trudeau them as insurrectionists or something. It's still a terrible plan. I think they lack the political good will to pull something like that off.
I agree that it's a terrible plan and if they try it they won't like the reaction. But some of them don't care. Perhaps the old-timers will be able to rein them in; we'll see.
It all just looks like desperate grasping to me. But desperate people are the most dangerous people, especially when they control pretty much every government and many civil and business institutions as well.
The old-timer democrats may try to reign it in, but they made a critical error when they let their TDS drive them to jump in bed with the rabid, progressive far-left. I think they're fucked now, and it's their own fault. At this point, the best they can hope for is that the progs burn down somebody else's house.
It's hard for people to admit they're wrong. Confirmation bias. This is the problem with "temporarily" handing over dictator-like powers to a few governors and medical officials. We've shut down democracy and the normal process of open debate.
And don't forget the Woke Uni to legislative intern pipeline - these people live and work in insulated echo chambers.
Theyre 100% UN Globalist lock step idealogs but the Agenda got terribly interrupted and the NWO Implementation script got torn up.
They have no Plan B bc Plan A is all they know.
Agenda 21 is founded on destroying the US economy bc we use too much of the worlds resources.
De industrialization is the goal.
Hence NAFTA and Made in China.
Their Plandemic response has accomplished that accidentally.
My take: all hands on deck as the bureaucracy does everything it can to protect its benefactors/partners in big pharma. As long as they maintain the illusion that covid is an emergency, big pharma maintains immunity from law suits for adverse reactions.
Walensky at least is starkly describing the problem with bureaucracy. For practical purposes she is incapable of supplanting the masking guidance locally, and for political purposes she is incapable of changing her "guidance".
Getting paid to know nothing and do nothing is not usually celebrated so graphically.
Keep making the case for vouchers, private schools, home schooling. The more we can save the children from public education the better.
Masks forever, Covid "vaccine" every fucking year...that's the plan isn't it?
Well, jolly good luck forcing us to do it.
Yes same as their annual flu vax campaign
Abour 10 years ago, the news floated that da Gummit had large stockpiles of flu vax not being used.
Since then its been the bleating of media sheep crying " were all gonna die without flu vaccines"
The failure of that morphed into this failure.
Denial was the logical response.
The Teacher's Unions haven't given her permission to change the mask mandate yet. They are still trying to play it for all it's worth.
Walensky is another statist. That allows her an absence of objective, independent thinking-the Achilles heel of statism.
Mix in some woke DNA, and you’ve got today’s mindless bureaucrat. It’s Stalin and Mao lite.
For now.
Political sciencism and financial incentives.
They're trying to save face by going all-in and hoping we follow along like good little idiots.
Never mind boosters only last up to 4 months. Never mind the risks of myocarditis spikes with each booster. Never mind most people having a 99.98% survival. Never mind other treatment options. Never mind the CEO of Moderna dumping his stock portfolio. Never mind life insurance claims up 40% not related to Covid.
Just trust the gov't and it'll all be OK.
She is justifying the guidance by saying it saves lives and prevents transmission, when the research is showing the effects of mailing are marginal at best, and deleterious effects on children learning and socialization are significant. She is giving a canned answer that does not address the question.
Except every actual study says masks don't do shit against an aerosolized virus in a populace that has no fucking clue how to use PPE, and in fact make everything worse.
She knows the answer and won't say it.
Because most of hypochondriacs in our society are in the Democrat's camp, and they will not accept that general masking is mostly a ritual, especially in regards to children.
They're such Karen individuals, tobecertain.
I've mentioned it before, but if you have ever known someone with OCD, or borderline you understand. They aren't the ones who suffer from the disorder. Everyone around them suffers as they inflict their obsessions on the world and are completely irrational.
If I can walk away from people like that I will. Might fuck with 'em some, like by making a table slightly unstraight right after they straighten it because... reasons. But then I just ignore them and go about my life because I can choose to.
Alas, Covid and the media-TheScience™ complex created hypochondriacs with the ability to enforce their shit societally.
Avoided like the plague, they're an absolute cancer in any organization unfortunate enough to have them.
its NOT ppe without training...
Anyone in Industry knows that
Google, how many days to midterm elections?
Google says, "In 264 days."
Vote Biden 2022 !
Go Joe!!
Democrats Unite !
Then set yourselves alight !
Nice spin for your audience Robby. Walensky's response was to the point, but allowed for local conditions and policy. WTF else do you want? When the cases and deaths get low enough the CDC will loosen their recommendations as they did in April 2021 when, with Biden, they recommended no masks for the vaccinated except when in tight quarters with the unmasked.
Anti-vaxxers like most here quote the studies they want on masks which are at worst ambiguous while ignoring others conclusive along with common sense. More significant of course is their ignoring the mast important and conclusive data now available, which shows they have been wrong for 2 years:
In both red and blue states, the unvaccinated are driving new covid cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Get you shot and tell your friend. The rest, including the fixation on Fauci and Walensky, teachers unions, and other bugaboos is just jacking off.
If I'm right and the vaccines are safe and effective and this is mostly a pandemic of the unvaccinated then there is ZERO need for any rules for society in general. If people want to be reasonably safe from Covid they can get vaccinated; if they'd rather take their chances with Covid than the vaccine then that's their choice.
Oh, I know, but then Covid cases are going to flood the ICU's and hospitals. Sorry but the government and medical system has had 2 years to increase ICU space if that was a real problem. If not having enough ICU space was really the big concern then the government could have easily fixed that for a fraction of the trillions which were spent on Covid bills.
justabill, you forgot to consider that Covid is highly contagious and even the vaccinated can get it, though much less likely to and also highly unlikely to end up in a hospital or die from it. If they do catch it but feel nothing, they still should self quarantine for days to weeks so as to not spread it further, and that is no fun and something to be avoided.
On adding hospital beds, no, vaccines are cheaper - about $26 cost to the government, each.
Speaking of full hospitals...

what a load of bullshit!
"“Mitigation of the observed risks of myocarditis/pericarditis and associated uncertainties will be accomplished through labeling ("
By a LABEL?
Not " identifying whom are at risk and NOT vaccinating them...."
The fact is, that this is pretty much SOP for the FDA. They either label it or pull the drug completely, rather than identify the at risk population. Inapsine was a wonderful anti-nausea medication, especially for post-op patients. It caused a slight lengthening of the QR interval. Since almost all pre-op protocols include an EKG, this could easily have been dealt with. Instead, the FDA pulled the drug completely, and recommended a new drug, that was designed for chemotherapy patients, and frankly didn't work except for chemotherapy related nausea. The manufacturers didn't fight it, because inapsine was already generic, and they made more money off the new name brand.
Also, note in previous, similar situations the FDA, with something this serious, has usually ordered a black box warning, which severely restricts the use of the approved medication, but instead they just put it on the label.
I read the FDA report on the approval for vaccines 5-11 yo last night. Out of 2100+ participants total in both groups, only 16 tested positive for COVID, 13 in placebo, 3 in treatment. None of them were severe enough to need medical interventions. So they modeled efficacy at reducing hospital admissions, but they used the all adults over 20 as the basis of their models (not sure why all adults over 20 was used, as the data overwhelming shows severe infections was not a normal distribution, and extremely biased to the right). I couldn't figure out why they didn't use the 12-19 yo cohort for their model, as it was the closest in age (might be the data was to insufficient, given how fast the approval for this age group was, and how they rushed the 5-11 yo, therefore they couldn't adequately model it). Total predicted hospitalization in the model was like 300 out of 10,000. To model myocarditis, they did use the 12-19 yo data, which means they had enough data on myocarditis to model it (which makes this a substantial finding if they packed the data to model hospitalizations). They found the risk was approximately 97 out of 10000. So almost a third as high as hospitalization. From this they stated the benefits outweigh the risk, but it looks to me like the risks are fairly substantial.
*the number of myocarditis cases was stated as myocarditis requiring hospitalization, not overall myocarditis risks.
The report also stated that all observed adverse reactions increased with each subsequent dose. Pfizer didn't report the actual numbers of myocarditis, or severity, and I couldn't discern from the report was if it was due to no cases reported or if it wasn't included. So the FDA had to model it.
Overall, on these findings, I am surprised that they approved the vaccine in all children in this cohort, rather than targeted vaccinations. But then again, given the political pressure, I am not. Given the fact that they only had 1% infection rate in the placebo group (the placebo group was 1/2 as large as the treatment group, not sure why they weren't evenly balanced) and 0.2% of the treatment group.
Additionally, the FDA calculated the vaccine was 95% effective, using modeling data, but actual result data shows only 80% difference.
Additionally, the benefits outweighed the risk in only two scenarios, the highest rate of infections in the population models, while it risks outweighed benefits in the four remaining models.
It is an absolute mockery of safety protocols and data has been twisted beyond recognition for profit.
The approval came before the tests.
We should weigh pros vs. cons.
I don't think it's reasonable to shut down several years for a slight increase in longevity in <1% of the population. I think we should weigh the quality of life for the hundreds of millions of people in the US whose lives have been severely impaired by the mitigation effort vs. the small extension of life for how ever many people were actually saved by the mitigation efforts (which I'm guessing probably added a few months of life on average * to a few hundred thousand people **)
* rough guess based on data that the typical covid death was an elderly person with multiple co-morbidities
** rough guess based on maybe 20-30% difference in mortality rate between US states with extreme lockdown measures vs. free states. And on the fact that mortality under Biden has been higher than under Trump.
And that's not even considering freedom, or the Constitution, or the long term effects of drastic changes in societal institutions, etc. Once you consider all that the cost of the lockdowns and mandates really outweighs the benefits.
they had 3 years to make additional facilities but refused.
NO patients went to the ship sent to NYC.

Preach it!
Let those anti-science bigots known they are not allowed to cite science when there's perfectly good sciencism going down.
Trust the gov't. Get boosted.
What the heck are you talking about? Did you listen to the whole thing to get some further context that is not here?
The CDC guidance is that all kids should not be vaccinated and masked.
Not "as local conditions indicate".
She said some were adjusting to local conditions, but that is not the guidance.
Her responses were an incoherent word salad.... I assume this is because her mission was to repeat and defend department policy, not to have a discussion about her own thoughts on the matter.
If I had been having that discussion, I would have lost my mind at the absurd, non-sequitur talking point responses. She did not come across as a competent scientist who understands the epidemiological issues at play. My assumption is that this is not due to incompetence, but due to a strategy that they need to speak with one voice to get a desired outcome, not a strategy to have a frank discussion with leadership behind closed doors.
Christ, what a cunt.
Dude, your typing in the wrong screen and isn't kind of early in the morning for that. Hope you're not at work.
One thing I’m starting to feel more ashamed about is going places (stores, restaurants, etc) where the only people wearing masks are those who work there. There’s no good reason at all that companies virtually everywhere are still forcing their employees to muzzle up.
I’m not sure why corporations are beholden to the precautionary principle for their employees moreso than even many government bodies, but it’s about time this shit stopped.
Good business Muzzled. Multiple studies showed consumer reluctance during lockdown days was more inspired by fear than edicts.
Which proves the edicts were unnecessary and enacted policies that impacted even those not in fear. We don't ground all airlines because some people have a fear of flying. What a stupid defense.
Employees only have masks when you're looking. Turn a corner and watch the diaper dip up.
I think they might also be worried about liability. If they order masking according to CDC guidelines, they probably can't face wrongful death suits if someone does of the Vid.
That's why they did it here. Many restaurants had the requisite masked servers, all of whom know it's theater. State mandated it so they put the sign on the door and made their employees pretend.
Of course, there are other types of places. My neices run restaurants and they opened last year during shutdowns. One of their places got one of the County health order violation letters most restaurants got at one point or another during that time. They just framed it and hung it over the bar. But some businesses closer to where I live, and corporate owned businesses especially, are too paranoid to do that so they muzzle the staff to stave off the lawyers.
They (Fauci and the CDC) have been purchased are are owned by Big Pharma. You can't tell mothers to vaccinate their new born babies with 2 to 4 doses of rMNA treatments at $$$ thousands per dose paid for with taxpayer money, if there is no reason to wear a mask.
Vaccines cost the government about $26 a pop. Get yours.
Everybody who is willing to get the vaccine has gotten it. No matter how much you bleat about the vaccines, the vaccination rate will not go up appreciably.
Its passed saturation bc Wal Greens pushing only " boosters"
The Gravy Train ran out.
That still amounts to millions of taxpayer dollars being spent on vaccinating young children and young adults who aren't at risk, statistically speaking.
Hint you can't vaccinate your way out of a global pandemic if the virus escapes the vaccine 33% of the time, and there are multiple animal hosts.
In fact, all this would do is put evolutionary pressure on the virus towards new variants that escape the vaccine even more.
One of the keys in IPM (integrated pest management) which deals with resistance management, is that you never use the same mode of action every year. You must rotate chemistries to avoid resistance, as well as cultural practices.
At this point, we are using the same mode of action, the same chemistry, while the number of break through cases increases with each variant. That leads in only one direction. We've seen it in pest management, we've seen it in bacterial pathogens. Reliance on a single mode of action leads to resistance developing in the targeted species, faster than if we didn't use that mode of action, or used it sparingly and targeted.
A number of immunologist were advocating using the vaccine in targeted risk groups, to reduce the chance of resistance evolving. But idiots like you and Biden advocated for using it, and reusing it, for everyone, regardless of risk factor. I expect the next variant will likely produce even more breakthrough cases. And this will cause even more deaths in the at risk category.
Even the critics of the Arizona study are understating what horse shit it is. The CDC amplified its the conclusions as fact, and makes slick posters touting a 3.5x reduction. Put aside all the mistakes pointed out in the Atlantic article. The authors compressed the community infection rate into 4 buckets with the largest bucket (100/100,000 and up) containing almost all the zip codes. With buckets like that, you could claim that the Arizona football team has a weight distribution almost like the the overall male population.
But RW says look at all the other papers we put in our journal. There must be a pony in there.
Dude, Arizona is not the only, main, or critical study on masks, much as the author pretends. This CDC summary from December lists all the supporting studies they have used in developing policy:
"Data were added from studies published since the last update. These studies address the association of mask wearing with new infections, including infections related to SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. All of these studies demonstrated a benefit.
SARS-CoV-2 infection is transmitted predominantly by inhalation of respiratory droplets generated when people cough, sneeze, sing, talk, or breathe. CDC recommends community use of masks to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Masks are primarily intended to reduce the emission of virus-laden droplets by the wearer (“source control”), which is especially relevant for asymptomatic or presymptomatic infected wearers who feel well and may be unaware of their infectiousness to others (estimated to account for more than 50% of SARS-CoV-2 transmissions).1, 2 Masks also help reduce inhalation of these droplets by the wearer (“filtration for wearer protection”). The community benefit of masking for SARS-CoV-2 control is due to the combination of these two effects (source control and filtration for wearer protection); individual prevention benefit increases with increasing numbers of people using masks consistently and correctly."
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-briefs/masking-science-sars-cov2.html
Dude, it's is always the same comment, "yeah, the CDC might be touting that horse shit, but look at all the other papers in that same "journal". There must be a pony in there. She pushed this paper over and over and over again. That horse shit paper is still out there. The authors refuse to release the underlying data. That paper explicitly says it didn't take into account vaccination rates.
Precisely.
And others in the same journal? The CDC's pet journal which picks and chooses what to publish and has been publishing papers that are getting shredded as bad science pretty regularly? That journal?
He gets posted a lot these days, but https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/science/articles/how-the-cdc-abandoned-science
There are some scathing examples, and that's why a lot of us don't trust the CDC or their interpretation of these shaky data anymore.
Psst. Aerosols.
How many times, Barbie Jack? It's REALLY bad for your narrative when it relies on ignoring reality to function. Kinda like a religion, innit?
The funny thing is, all of that is "it should work this way"
But when you look at the data... There is no "there" there.
You should see massive reductions, not some subtle effect that has to be teased out of the data with statistical manipulation.
This stuff isn't new. Oddly, before the pandemic, leftist "skeptics" like Science Based Medicine had whole screeds about the ineffectiveness of cloth and paper masks against respiratory viruses. They said the folks masking up in Asia in public probably helped somewhat if they were wearing a mask because they were sick... But viruses are too small for those masks and even though it intuitively seems obvious that they should help at least some... When it is actually studied, they don't make any difference.
On the spring of the pandemic, they were saying that only n95 masks would be useful.
Then...
The government, realizing that there would never be hundreds of millions of n95 masks per week, said everyone should wear cloth masks.
And magically not another word was heard from the left wing skeptics. Not once it was Trump versus Science.
Both CDC and NIH published on n95s not stopping droplets of various uM sizes upwards of 250 IIRC and up to 100% failure rate (I dont recall if that was a droplet size or overall mask basis).
It was clearly stated that trapping droplets was not a filtering action- the size did not matter as much as electrostatic behaviour.
Not one peep on that from CDCs Politickers.
Im just a lowly EE and I understood it clearly.
Still relying on laboratory tests, in vitro as opposed to in vivo at that, to discount real world, in vivo, studies that discounts your assumptions I see.
Do you realize how weak in vitro lab results are considered, especially when in vivo real world research fails to support their findings?
This is why those who wish FDA would become just an advisory body regarding new drugs need to be shown how ineffectual such a reform would be by itself. All the states have pharmacy laws that require that a drug be licensed by FDA or go thru a similar approval process for that state before they may be sold there.
So it is with CDC as an advisory body as far as the states go.
In Leaked Audio, CDC's Rochelle Walensky Privately Confirms She Lies
This discussion with lawmakers leaves me of two minds.
On the one hand, I worry that she is not giving them true and candid answers in order to have the proper strategic take... To wit, to avoid some politician taking words out of context, latching on to phrasing that admits to uncertainty, etc., She makes declarative statements that are not particularly informative, not particularly on point, and not particularly thoughtful.
At least this is a strategy. This answer is indicative of a sick and dysfunctional leadership that will inevitably go horribly wrong, since everyone is speaking strategically instead of speaking forthrightly.... But at least there might be a level of intelligence and competence behind it.
The alternative is that this is the best she can do. She has been handed a set of figures and has had the basic policy explained, and she is the talking head political administrator who mouths the words. The alternative is that CDC is not really thinking deeply about any of this... That they latched on to "how can we reduce transmission" early on, and have not reconsidered any of their base assumptions since.
This is the more scary option. It is also the option that more closely matches what we observe from the outside.
I have a hard time believing this explanation. I used to work at Emory University, and working in immunology, I met quite a few people from CDC (It is right there, so we attended meeting and stuff together all the time, and they collaborated with people all around me). They are full of sharp people.
There is zero chance that they are incapable of understanding all the complex issues that have been raised... Natural immunity, risk-reward, protecting the most vulnerable while recognizing that the infection is endemic and will not be stopped without herd immunity....
Which leaves a huge disconnect between what the leadership is doing and saying and what the people who work there must actually believe.
So it has to be a messaging strategy. But why? The leadership seems to have a goal of zero infections for the least vulnerable, with no regard to ancillary costs... While having a much more pragmatic approach to those who are less vulnerable than the elderly (because politics?)
We need a press corps who are competent to question these people. Not with gotcha questions, but with real questions about policy, the disease, the dangers, tradeoffs, real data and not accepting "because I said so"... This would be relatively easy for any immunology grad student and above. Or virologist. Just as long as they had an objective of exploring the issues and getting detailed positions of officials accurately represented. Hard to find unbiased people in academia these days.
Basically, we desperately need a scientifically literate Joe Rogan who these people will talk to. A place for long form discussion and detailed answers to tough and complex questions.
I wish they could understand that they need it too. This current strategy of telling people what you think they need to hear is terrible, and it is sowing mistrust.
"We need a press corps who are competent to question these people."

I ran into this recently, I gave an interview to the paper, which was science heavy. It was on addressing soil acidity and reducing soil aciditification. I did edit the journalistic piece, but as I knew what I meant to say, and the science I subconsciously filled in the blanks for the missing information that the writer didn't understand. I got a really nasty letter from the head of the soil department at our university. After that, I always have an outside expert edit any interview I give, to avoid misunderstanding.
As it turns out, at least one of his complaints, I was correct and he was wrong. Which he later admitted to. He went off the word of the research site I was referring to, who didn't realize that his soil scientist were doing that type of research.
Which he should have questioned why that research farm wasn't doing that type of research when it was in the region were the problem was first identified and most severe.
These people have lost their minds. Their unscientific "guidance" has completely shredded their credibility. It will never recover.
I am leaving my position in July of this year, to concentrate on my ranch. But I also want to work part time, so I've been trying to get my nursing license renewed. Montana can't issue my license as they don't have my transcripts from the Army. I emailed the DoD department that deals with transcripts back in early January, they still haven't even responded to my emails. The reason I was told is because of COVID protocols they are only working part time, part staff, and are backlogged.
This is bullshit, with mask mandates, vaccine mandates, the fucking government is still only working part staff. Two years and counting into this.
They are preventing nurses from working for our health and safety!
My wife, who had a legitimate health reason according to her doctor, and who has had the virus, was not given a medical exemption under the Medicare rules for healthcare workers, because they made the exemptions so narrow that almost no one could get one. She had to take a bullshit religious exemption, and submit to testing twice a week to keep her job.
Some bureaucrats in DC overruled the advice of her doctor, who has been caring for her for five years.
You're all so very REASONable. Don't you get it, YET?? It's not about a CCP virus, dummies. It's about your compliance. STOP COMPLYING. It's not complicated. Homeschool your damn kids if you have to.
Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome.

There is a reason why the love of money is considered to be the root of all evil and it’s not just what people are willing to do to get it, but also the control it grants to the person giving it over the person getting it.
Washington, for example, controls the states by granting them money on a rolling basis, and once they are hooked they threaten to take it away if the states do not do what Washington tells them to do. So they do it.
So is it any wonder then, to learn that the reason schools require and strictly enforce masking children - one of the biggest crimes against humanity in history - is because they are paid to do so by the CDC?

Trust us because reasons.
Dr Walensky is making it very plain that she is nothing but another politically appointed bureaucrat.
It is rather clear that she isn't making any statement or opinion that hasn't been vetted by the White House. In other words, she's no longer speaking as a scientist.
"so called natural immunity"
Wow. REASON editors and writers really need to get their head out of their collective nether regions when it comes to COVID-19 science. Over 141 published peer reviewed studies on "so called" Natural Immunity and that's the terminology you are using in this so called libertarian rag. Try the Brownstone Institute for better sources. You were hoodwinked. It doesn't have to continue. You don't have to continue to bray like donkeys. Wake up!
EXCUSE ME!! Where did the people (The U.S. Constitution) even grant the federal government authority for commie-school or mask mandates?
....or lets play another game; How does one even construe such powers from the Supreme Law?
Our leaders pretending like "The People" who founded this great nation had nothing to say even after giving life and blood for a free nation..... Nazi's everywhere.
This is the swamp. The rot of congressional log-jams and log-rolls mark the surface of the swamp, floating around and stinking up the place. But it's the knee deep mud of a fake technocracy, careerist suck-up's and connected party lackies, that will ultimately smother the two-and-half centuries of America's march forward toward efficiency, prosperity and progress.
These remarks should come as no surprise. From the start of this crisis, the attitude of the technocrats has been to optimize their own personal fortunes, if not in terms of actual financial prospects, then in terms of their bid price as experts and consultants in the green-pasture world after retirement. And to minimize the risk to their own careers and the authority of their agencies. The idea that optimization of the big picture, utilitarian balancing, has been labeled by these siloed bureaucrats as back-ward thinking and contrary to modern egalitarian values is anathema to all but the disciples of rainbow-fairy-unicorn worship and would-be recreators of Jonestown.
It is time to restore the default status quo ante. In the past, our courts and our congress have afforded deference to unelected technocrats on the assumption of both competence and objectivity. We have upheld their actions, so long as due process (e.g., notice and comment rule-making) were followed, in all but arbitrary and capricious acts. However, that needs to be changed. Rather than a government that can engulf in quicksand anything it sets it's gaze upon in a less-than-arbitrary way, we must set a standard where only ON CLEAR AND CONVINCING PROOF should an agency that is not directly accountable to the people be allowed to create limitations on the freedom of individuals to act as they see fit within the confines of the law. In the immortal words of Frank Hart to his utopian government bureaucrat, "...lady, you've got too many rules."
How did we get here? We let the legal profession decay into a festering wasteland. We stopped attracting sound thinkers to the bench and instead embraced a system where two parties compete to bring in hired-gun "experts" to educate the un-educatable... the lay juror. And then we allowed this hired-gun system to infect the bureaucracy, with law firms and lobbyists enmeshed in the actual rule-making processes to an extent that transparency hasn't just been left behind, it's been shot in head, tied to a cement block, tossed in the swam, and paved over as a parking lot.
Walensky will keep the kids masked indefinitely. Other forms of child abuse will be optional.
Exactly. The CDC must follow what The Science tells them to do, and The Science must follow what the American Federation of Teachers tells it to do.
Anything with the word “Public” in it doesn’t work, doesn’t make sense, is unethical, uses force and is generally bad for the Public. These clowns can’t say or do anything right. Ignore them and fight to remove them from their positions of power at all times.
