Some People Love a State of Crisis
Why do so many people seem eager to fret and impose emergency measures even as COVID-19 becomes endemic and restrictions take a growing toll?

Can't we get back to some version of normal? That's a fair question now that every American who wants a COVID-19 vaccine has had the opportunity to get one. But we still get breathless coverage of every variant and new rounds of travel restrictions, mask mandates, and vaccine document checks as if it were still the early days of the pandemic.
Why do so many people seem eager to fret and impose emergency measures even as COVID-19 becomes endemic and restrictions take a growing toll? It's as if they actually enjoy living in a permanent state of crisis—and maybe they do.
"Crisis-prone individuals don't just like to live in a state of high alert—they seem to relish being called upon to fix all those problems that are causing the crisis," Susan Krauss Whitbourne, professor emerita of psychological and brain sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, wrote in a 2014 Psychology Today article. These people, she explained, "seek—if not revel in—drama, become worked up over small problems, and tend to see themselves as the center of their all-too-frenetic universes."
Whitbourne wrote years before vaccine passports were a twinkle in a bureaucrat's eye, referring to people hooked on disruptive adrenaline rushes at work or home. But a substantial share of our population seems to get much the same kick from a public health crisis.
Early in the pandemic, Elizabeth Cohen, a psychologist who specializes in anxiety, estimated that 20 percent of her clients had seen an improvement in their symptoms with the arrival of the virus and related restrictions. The reason, she told The Daily Beast, was that their fear of the unknown had been replaced by an actual danger with which they could grapple.
"A lot of people are saying, 'The terrible thing happened,'" she said. "So in a lot of ways you're not in the anticipating state."
Whether because a previously amorphous catastrophe has taken specific shape or for other reasons, part of the population actually takes pleasure from the destruction of normal life by public health measures. "On balance a third of people in the UK have been enjoying the lockdown," University College of London researchers reported in June 2020. About a quarter "felt they would miss lockdown more than not miss it."
On this side of the Atlantic, while Americans overall reported being less happy as COVID-19 spread, 27 percent of us said we felt "on top of the world," according to researchers with NORC at the University of Chicago. Who tends to embrace such chaos?
"Of the third of people who report enjoying lockdown, a large number have higher household incomes and live with others or children, suggesting these people may have been less affected by the economic and social restrictions," the University College of London researchers noted. Higher-income people are also more likely to be able to work from home. That meant 60 million fewer commuting hours per day just in the United States, according to a 2020 VoxEU paper. Remote workers, who split the saved hours between their job duties, leisure, and other activities, ended up with an average work week of 32 hours—4.4 fewer than they put in pre-pandemic. Less time in transit and more for leisure and family might convince people to embrace a crisis even if they're not adrenaline junkies.
Let's not forget the public health officials who found themselves thrust into the spotlight and the politicians who assumed unprecedented powers. Newly minted New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) declared a state of emergency in November while scientists were still assessing what, if any, special dangers the omicron variant posed. Stepping back into obscurity and normal power parameters is difficult when you've been juiced by a crisis.
Adrenaline junkies, those who can work in pajamas, and empowered politicos don't entirely explain the lingering crisis. Mask mandates, travel restrictions, and vaccination requirements maintained solid majority support among Americans in a Morning Consult survey conducted after omicron appeared. Those who enjoy disruption may be persuading or shaming others to embrace chaos.
"For crisis-prone co-workers, bosses, or employees, the key is to start by managing your own reactions," Whitbourne wrote in 2014. "It's all too easy to take on the 'sky is falling' mentality of such individuals." Those of us who are ready for a return to some sort of normality may have to learn to calm our crisis-prone peers, or else ignore them.

"God is dead, and we killed Him." You gotta believe in something larger than yourself or life has no meaning and if it's not God, the Trilateral Commission will have to do.
If not God then family. If not family then community.
This is why the left works so hard to destroy local institutions. They have tonremove the belief on local social connections in order to gain obedience to a state or government.
I am too much a skeptic to ever have faith, but I think losing it has been extremely destructive for our nation.
Translation: imbecilic assumptions yield imbecile conclusions, just like in Dilbert.
if it's not God, the Trilateral Commission will have to do.
I don't believe in either of those things; my life has as much meaning as anyone else's...
Dumpy white women and skinny emasculated white guys will be hit hardest by a return to normalcy. They want to look forward to telling their grand-cats about their heroic deeds, like their daring missions to the Wal-mart parking lot to yell at people for not wearing masks.
"I lived through THE PANDEMIC!"
Good for you, buddy. So did 99.98% of everyone else.
And most of the .02% that didn't weren't long for this earth anyway.
But a 20% increase in death for younger adults not covid related is no big deal.
https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/national/coronavirus/researchers-examining-spike-in-deaths-that-were-not-covid-related
By late 2020 or early 2021, the biggest category of excess deaths were in the young crowd. To anyone with a functioning brain, it was obvious that those weren't covid deaths. The gaslighting by the media and the we're all in this together bullshit killed way more than it saved. Too bad all of us screaming that from the rooftops 2 years ago were ignored.
I have a nephew who the lockdowns and school closings have caused immense problems for. I feel honestly horrible for the boy.
When they are in line at the welfare office, they look like the number 10.
This made me groan and cradle my head, it's so true.
I got yelled at by one for wearing a red Sriracha hat a couple months ago.
TDS is strong.
Asking why she didn't like the hot asian cock sauce was extremely effective.
You sir are correct.
Why do you think so many people have quit their jobs? They've had enough of this bullshit.
But calming the panic-mongers down isn't an option any more than telling a baby to stop screaming. Just have to step away until they've worn themselves out.
At least babies can’t vote.
This situation perpetuates solely because of tribalism. A majority of independents reject this nonsense. A majority of republicans reject this nonsense. This is solely a Democratic Party problem, and it remains so because the minority on the left who realize these draconian laws must go would rather fight with independents and republicans than push back on what they know is wrong.
The leaders on the left have no incentive to drop these abridgements of our freedoms. They just point their base at the "Other Tribe" and return to the French Laundry to party. And their base is happy to oblige- as David Hogg said, he would rather wear a mask than be confused with a Trump voter. The hilarious thing is that it is the folks on the left who inhabit these comments that claim Republicans are the partisans, even as they decline to actually criticize the people that are causing this misery.
Great. You've summoned Mike.
And collectivistjeff, and sarcasmic, and I assume sqrlsy
Good. They are the ones who need to see this message. It ain't going to be Red State conservatives in flyover territory that will make these Dem leaders blink. It is the friends of the BlueCheck twitterati that say to them, "I can't do another winter with my kids learning from home. Poor Ava's missing chances to get into Yale because my law firm's office was closed to interns!"
When Biden (and his handlers) wanted to rally the base after the Disaster in Kabul, he pushed mandates. Rather than push back, folks like Mike and Jeff happily went along with it. It was precisely because this Kulture Warz bullshit works that Biden (and his handlers) relied on it. Until they get criticism from "inside the house", this shit isn't going to stop.
Are we sure they aren’t the same guy?
Did we hear Gov Newsome's newest French Laundry excuse? He said it was OK that he took his mask off for pictures at the NFL playoff game...because he held his breath...
Of course, this is after his earlier statements having taken it off for a moment just to get a photo with Magic Johnson were exposed as the lies that they were by video showing him unmasked often during the game.
And, of course, just after the recall election last year he rallied for (vaccine) exemptions for his prison-guard friends.
Better title:
Some People Love a Making Others Miserable
Alternate title: "Republican Crashes Bring Communism"
Revised title: Hank Phillips' head has a screw loose
Well, TooSilly, it could just be because progressivism makes people insane.
Have we gotten to acknowledging which team supports police state lockdowns and which one wants them to end?*

*spoiler, Dems are totalitarians.
those poor white girls are just suffering under the patriarchy. That's what is making them crazy
You jest, but I don't think that is a new development.
By which I mean:
"those poor white girls are just suffering under the patriarchy. That's what is making them crazy"
Is in their minds entirely true, and these numbers were probably the same before the CIA-CCP-Plandemic for the reason that you state(purportedly).
Other countries have social support systems. In America we have pajama class warrior women!

sounds like mass psychosis.
Mystical altruism is mass psychosis.
Found it!
Looks like it too
Lessons from the past. After the Methodist White Terror managed to impose Czarist Prohibition laws on America, the economy crashed and communist party membership nearly doubled by 1924. War loan repayment prosperity reduced that to under 7000 until the 1929 Increased Penalties Act made beer and wine a felony. Communist membership tripled before FDR was sworn in. Fascist Republican laws against production and trade wreck the economy. Communists greet these wrecks with whoops of joy, again and again and again...
I cannot help but think that much of the problem stems from the politicization of the pandemics. Because we did not search for compromises early, we now come to a point where no one wants to compromise at all. The reality is that everyone is sick of the the pandemic, but no one wants to go first on giving into their beliefs.
We are stuck in a country where a good chunk of the population are playing senseless partisan team sports. Both major parties try everything they can to drag those of us who don't want to participate into their culture war.
So why do you keep cheerleading?
"compromise" how?
It's one group of partisans seeking to force vaccines on other people's kids. They want to shut down your business and put you in jail for trying to keep it open. They want to lock you in your home! This is evil and should be resisted. There's no middle level "compromise" here, sorry.
Please cite when an opportunity for 'compromise' was offered that did not entail complete capitulation.
What happened was Dems eased off going full totalitarian when it became apparant that they were not only completely wrong, but it also was losing them votes. You can guess which was most important, I believe.
Sorry, that was for M4E.
Politicization of the pandemics? Heck politicization of everything. Humans can make almost any issue political one. Next they will be politicizing the weather...oh wait.... 🙂
Why do so many people seem eager to fret and impose emergency measures even as COVID-19 becomes endemic and restrictions take a growing toll?
Because it makes them feel like they're a part of something big.
Yeah, being a part of a cause. People who don't volunteer or attend a church or a service organization like folks did in previous years don't get that local connection anymore.
Pandemic made a certain kind of person feel like they get to play a roll in the big thing. Not that it is a hard roll for some folks. Especially easy when it was someone else's restaurant that had to close and never reopened. Or when your income wasn't derived from an entertainment business. Or you already have a family and a home with a nice yard, so you can work from home and don't normally go out into the world to feel any sense of connection or community. You can just virtue signal online and complain about people being anti-social because they won't "do such a simple thing" as comply with restrictions that are only a placebo, or worse.
People don't have the empathy they once did. Narcissism is on the rise and has been for a generation or two -- which is saying something with a Baby Boomer baseline. If they did they might be able to imagine how terrible it is for some people, for whom they currently have no regard or just dismiss out of hand.
After two years of this crap, parts of them ARE something big!
i think they're just low iq dolts
I have friends like this.
They are living their best life right now.
See: Change, Climate.
Ah yes. When we can dream of a society where a 16 year old brat can be nominated for a noble prize simply for being a brat in front of the UN.
I'll admit that I personally benefited quite a lot from the various restrictions and lockdowns. I got to work from home for over a year, and now enjoy a hybrid work environment where I only go in a few days a week. I saved a lot of money on gas and parking, clothing, etc. I got to spend more time with my family, and enjoy my large backyard. Didn't have to go to various social events that I would have been obligated to.
I did miss some things, mainly related to activities for children. A lot of things got shut down that would have been fun.
A crisis is the perfect chance to whip out the red folder and lay claim to powers way beyond the office...witness this action from March 2020 (first months of the COVID "crisis")...
The mayor of Champaign, Illinois has declared a town emergency over the Wuhan coronavirus that includes a potential ban on the sale of firearms and ammunition.
Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen has issued an executive order that would give her office "extraordinary powers." She has issued the order despite the town and surrounding area not having a single case of the disease.
Here is the list of other items from the declaration/executive order, which also includes the ability to ban the sale of "food, water, fuel, clothing, and/or other commodities, materials, goods, services and resources," in addition to alcohol and gasoline. Additionally, government agents or officials have the ability to seize private property and to cut off the city water supply. The mayor justifies everything "in the interest of public safety and wolf."
After the declaration of an emergency, the Mayor may in the interest of public safety and welfare make any or all of the following orders and provide the following direction:
(1) Issue such other orders as are imminently necessary for the protection of life and property.
(2) Order a general curfew applicable to such geographical areas of the City or to the City as a whole, as the Mayor deems advisable, and applicable during such hours of the day or night as the Mayor deems necessary in the interest of public safety and welfare.
(3) Order the closing of all retail liquor stores, including taverns and private clubs or portions thereof wherein the consumption of intoxicating liquor and beer is permitted;
(4) Order the discontinuance of the sale of alcoholic liquor by any wholesaler or retailer;
(5) Order the discontinuance of selling, distributing, or giving away gasoline or other liquid flammable or combustible products in any container other than a gasoline tank properly affixed to a motor vehicle;
(6) Order the discontinuance of selling, distributing, dispensing or giving away of explosives or explosive agents, firearms or ammunition of any character whatsoever;
(7) Order the control, restriction and regulation within the City by rationing, issuing quotas, fixing or freezing prices, allocating the use, sale or distribution of food, fuel, clothing and other commodities, materials, goods or services or the necessities of life;
(8) (a) Order City employees or agents, on behalf of the City, to take possession of any real or personal property of any person, or to acquire full title or such lesser interest as may be necessary to deal with a disaster or emergency, and to take possession of and for a limited time, occupy and use any real estate to accomplish alleviation of the disaster, or the effects thereof;
(b) In the event any real or personal property is utilized by the City, the City shall be liable to the owner thereof for the reasonable value of the use or for just compensation as the case may be.
(9) Order restrictions on ingress or egress to parts of the City to limit the occupancy of any premises;
(10) To make provision for the availability and use of temporary emergency housing;
(11) Temporarily suspend, limit, cancel, convene, reschedule, postpone, continue, or relocate all meetings of the City Council, and any City committee, commission, board, authority, or other City body as deemed appropriate by the Mayor.
(12) Require closing of business establishments.
(13) Prohibit the sale or distribution within the City of any products which could be employed in a manner which would constitute a danger to public safety.
(14) Temporarily close any and all streets, alleys, sidewalks, bike paths, public parks or public ways.
(15) Temporarily suspend or modify, for not more than sixty (60) days, any regulation or ordinance of the City, including, but not limited to, those regarding health, safety, and zoning. This period may be extended upon approval of the City Council.
(16) Suspend or limit the use of the water resources or other infrastructure.
(17) Control, restrict, allocate, or regulate the use, sale, production, or distribution of food, water, fuel, clothing, and/or other commodities, materials, goods, services and resources.
(18) Suspend or limit burning of any items or property with the City limits and up to two (2) miles outside the corporate limits.
(19) Direct and compel the evacuation of all or part of the population from any stricken or threatened areas within the City if the mayor deems this action is necessary for the preservation of life, property, or other disaster or emergency mitigation, response or recovery and to prescribe routes, modes of transportation and destination in connection with an evacuation.
(21) Approve application for local, state, or federal assistance.
(22) Establish and control routes of transportation, ingress or egress.
(23) Control ingress and egress from any designated disaster or emergency area or home, building or structures located therein.
(24) Approve the transfer the direction, personnel, or functions of City departments and agencies for the purpose of performing or facilitating emergency or disaster services.
(25) Accept services, gifts, grants, loans, equipment, supplies, and/or materials whether from private, nonprofit, or governmental sources.
(26) Require the continuation, termination, disconnection, or suspension of natural gas, electrical power, water, sewer, communication or other public utilities or infrastructure.
(27) Close or cancel the use of any municipally owned or operated building or other public facility.
(28) Declare, issue, enforce, modify and terminate orders for quarantine and isolation of persons or animals posing a threat to the public, not conflicting with the directions of the Health Officer of the community.
(29) Exercise such powers and functions in light of the exigencies of emergency or disaster including the waiving of compliance with any time consuming procedures and formalities, including notices, as may be prescribed by law.
(30) Issue any and all such other orders or undertake such other functions and activities as the Mayor reasonably believes is required to protect the health, safety, and welfare of persons or property within the City or otherwise preserve the public peace or abate, clean up, or mitigate the effects of any emergency or disaster.
Yep, this was my first thought. The neurotics may secretly love the lockdowns, but they aren't the ones imposing it. The problem is the politicians who jizz themselves at the power-grab opportunities.

Some idiots are furious about COVID restrictions being lifted. Other idiots on reason are furious that the government wants to regulate clean drinking water. Both positions are dumb extremist nonsense.
