Germany's Failed Bid To Be the Global Climate Leader
Nuclear power wasn’t green enough for German leaders, so now they depend on energy from Russia.
Of the world's largest economies, none have tried harder to fight climate change than Germany. In 2011, former Chancellor Angela Merkel announced an unprecedented Energiewende ("energy transition") plan to slash her country's greenhouse gas emissions and usher in a new green economy. A decade later, electricity prices are skyrocketing while Germany is finalizing a new natural gas pipeline with Russia. With the news that Germany will miss its emissions reduction targets for 2022 and 2023, the Energiwende can officially be declared a self-imposed climate disaster.
Turning the world's fourth-largest economy—one that emerged from the ashes of World War II on the back of its coal, steel, and auto manufacturing industries—green required radical transformation. In a sense, Germany's proposed 21st century economic transformation would require undoing its 20th century economic miracle.
Germany was already reducing its greenhouse gas emissions before 2011, so it came as a surprise when Merkel announced that her government would "end the use of nuclear energy and reach the age of renewable energy as fast as possible." The Energiewende's goal of reducing emissions 80 to 95 percent by 2050 was ambitious, but it was the prospect of achieving this goal without nuclear energy that truly turned heads. By shuttering nuclear plants and scaling wind and solar, Merkel made a poor bet that a green economy could run on wind and sunshine alone.
After a swath of decrees and guidelines, as well as tens of billions of euros in subsidies for, and investment in, renewable projects, Merkel boasted about creating hundreds of thousands of green-collar jobs. Many Germans embraced this vision for the future, taking pride in their nation's turn toward an economy powered by nature. Yet it quickly became apparent that while the Energiewende plan offered vision, it lacked sound strategy.
Bureaucracy slowed the construction of necessary infrastructure for storing and transporting new renewable forms of energy. And suddenly Dunkelflaute—a term used to describe periods of low energy production when the sun failed to shine or the wind didn't blow—entered the German vernacular. By 2019, the Federal Court of Auditors declared that the 160 billion euros ($180 billion) spent over the last five years were "in extreme disproportion to the results."
By the tenth anniversary of the Energiewende, the scope of the project's failure became clear. The year before, German leaders had celebrated renewables reaching 46.2 percent of national electricity consumption due to favorable weather conditions and lower demand. But in 2021, this trend reversed. During the COVID economic bounce back, energy demand exploded while wind power production decreased by 25 percent—leaving coal and natural gas generation to fill in the gaps.
German households have the highest electricity prices in the world, but many Germans are still committed to their utopian vision. Last fall, voters pushed out Merkel's center-right Christian Democrats in favor of a coalition led by the center-left Social Democrats. This wasn't a refutation of the Energiewende though, since it appears that Chancellor Olaf Scholz will double down as he has expressed interest in being known as the "climate chancellor" and supports policies including an EU-wide carbon price.
The Energiewende has consequences beyond German borders too. The country can't meet its energy needs with domestic wind, solar, and coal production. So Germans are eagerly awaiting the completion of Nord Stream 2, a pipeline that will deliver natural gas from Russia. It will pump fossil fuel into Germany while lining the pockets of Russian oligarchs with cash. Those excommunicated nuclear plants would have provided emissions-free energy without any reliance on Russia.
Meanwhile in Brussels, Germany's new Economy and Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck wants to force the Energiewende plan on the rest of Europe. He recently rejected the European Commission's plan to label nuclear energy "green," saying the move "waters down the good label for sustainability." As long as Germany is miscategorized as the global climate leader, other nations will follow its mindless model.
German technocrats' hubris has produced a coal renaissance and a dangerous dependence on Russian natural gas. The rest of the world should not take advice from them.

Germany’s efforts to get away from coal and nuclear have left them gassed.
They broke wind.
Fuel for further discussion.
The sun will rise tomorrow... unless it's cloudy.
Would this be properly classified as a strategy of Blitzgrüner or is it a full on Grünerkrieg? Either way, be assured the French will never see it coming.
The Germans are so Uber-Green that they's trying to loudly, greenly spout Brussels-Spouted Brussels-Sprouts of non-nuclear greenishness all over the EU HQ! Greeny-weenies and watermelons! Green on the outside, red on the inside!
It is certainly not Fahrvergnügen.

All Day I Dream About Solar
I have a pair of World Cup '82s that say "made in West Germany" I still use them.
Bet those have a substantial footprint.
You know who else was an ally to The Rising Sun?
Arbeit macht frei, indeed.
*Ooof!* That really took my breath away!
Trump called them out on it. Why are we defending them thru NATO when they are making deals with the country NATO was created to oppose?
An even better question is why we’re subsidizing Germany’s green boondoggle via our defense dollars?
They’re apparently too poor to pay for their own fucking defense, but have enough to throw away in failed energy programs. The fuck out with the shit.
One of the many reasons why the US should leave NATO yesterday.
>>none have tried harder to fight climate change than Germany.
the lessons of Don Quixote are very easy ones to learn. even in German.
Huh, well this makes sense for why I hear about Germany every time I hear about failed green energy.
Someone should mention that, even as I type, Germany is negotiating with Putin on Minsk 2, which would give Russia veto rights over Ukrainian legislation that gets in the way of Russia's territorial ambitions.
"France and Germany, in particular, are pursuing negotiations that could give Mr. Putin a face-saving way to de-escalate, focusing on moves to advance the long-stalled Minsk-2 agreement on the role of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Russian and Ukrainian officials last week met in Paris to revive talks on the Minsk-2 agreement that remains unimplemented since its signing in 2015, with another round slated for next week in Berlin."

Meanwhile, Germany has prohibited any weapons sales to Ukraine by German contractors. You can't make this stuff up!
It should be understood that all of this is an escalation tied to Biden's foolish decision on Nord Stream 2. Biden incompetently capitulated to Nord Stream 2 as a gesture of good faith to repair our relationship with Germany--that Donald Trump supposedly ruined--and we probably wouldn't be looking at what we're seeing in Ukraine right now if Biden hadn't stupidly given Germany a pass for decommissioning their nuclear power to become even more dependent on Russian natural gas.
Nations, like people, have a way of rationalizing whatever they need to do because it's in their best interests, and their best interests are typically rationalized to coincide with their best interests economically. Now that it's in Germany's best interests, economically, to depend on Putin's natural gas, suddenly Germany doesn't want anybody selling weapons to Russia's enemies and is working against the rest of NATO (sans France) to make Ukraine capitulate to Minsk 2. Who knew that could happen?!
The answer is just about everybody in the world except the Biden administration. Why did we put the world in such feeble hands?
One of the reasons Donald Trump's cries of "America first!" had such resonance with so many people was because Barack Obama considered the interests of other countries first--with the Paris Accords being one example and his deal to let Iran enrich their own uranium being another. Biden's stupid efforts to repair our relationship with Germany--by subverting American security interests for the interest of the Germans--may have irreparably broken our long term alliance with Germany going forward. The Biden administration is so stupid, and turning NATO against itself is n't the only problem. Biden is practically begging the next populist to come out screaming, "America first!", and the next one may not be as docile as Donald Trump.
How does Biden have any say over NordStream 2? Why does Biden have any say over Germany's nuclear reactors?
It's a great question.
The US is guaranteeing Germany's security through NATO.
Germany can, of course, choose to become dependent on Russia.
And the US can then tell Germany to defend itself, cease military cooperation, cease technology transfer. It can also impose the same economic restrictions on Germany as it does on Russia.
See, both sides have choices.
"And the US can then tell Germany to defend itself, "
And this is the proper route to untangling ourselves from this morass.
The only reason Germany continues to climb into bed with Russia is that the US is there to protect them if Russia gets too frisky. Their neighbors and the United States are the ones to pay for the collective defense of Europe, either in war material or territory lost.
Put simply, Germany can engage in this risky double-dealing and back-stabbing geopolitical behavior solely because the US is a deterrent to any sort of behavior that might ACTUALLY harm the country. Ukraine? Poland? Lithuania? Feh- those countries aren't Germany.
If the US were not part of the equation, then Germany and its neighbors will quickly change their tune. If all these neighbors really believe Germany's behavior is creating a strategic vulnerability, then they need to take that up with Germany, not assume that the US will bail them out. And if Germany can decide whether they want to be a credible voice at the table the next time Russia decides a country owes them territory. (Hint: if they are scene as an economic vassal of Russia, no one is going to even want them at the table.)
"The only reason Germany continues to climb into bed with Russia is that the US is there to protect them if Russia gets too frisky. Their neighbors and the United States are the ones to pay for the collective defense of Europe, either in war material or territory lost."
I spent three years of my life in Germany to defend it from the Warsaw Pact. I was there when the Berlin Wall fell. Back then I thought we had won.
Now that Germany is willing to suck Russia’s dick, I think it’s time to abandon Europe and leave them to their own devices. We should stop defending nations that aren’t willing to defend themselves.
Fuck Europe and fuck NATO, let’s defend the nations that are willing to fight and bleed their own blood to defend themselves. Like the nations being threatened by China.
The entire purpose of NATO was to resist the encroachment of the Soviet Union, now Russia. The fact that NATO's #2 (or 3) country thinks that the enemy of NATO is good enough to depend on for 40% of its energy needs should be prima facie proof that NATO is a bygone relic whose time is long past.
Why did we put the world in such feeble hands?
Because Biden's an environmental and economic genius and EVs are the wave of the future, Ken.
Bureaucracy slowed the construction of necessary infrastructure for storing and transporting new renewable forms of energy.
What role did thermodynamics play?
A very limiting one
Damn you, entropy!
Thermodynamics plays the role of being a bitch to these failed renewable schemes. Reality isn't known for giving in to wishes or Unicorn Farts and Pixy Dust.
German households have the highest electricity prices in the world, but many Germans are still committed to their utopian vision.
Germany has a bit of a history in being committed to their various utopian visions.
I wonder if the German Greens have their own architect yet.
I'm sure the architect's plans are like this one's:

Germany's Failed Bid To Be the Global Climate Leader
You know who else in Germany made a failed bid to be a global leader?
Germany is trying to lead the world in virtue signaling.
How much electricity can be generated by hand waving?
To quote the great engineer bender Rodriguez "would a lemon make a better batter than a human, or a Potatoe, or literally anything"
Not to disagree with Bender The Magnificent, but I'm pretty sure the Germans have plenty of hard data on exactly how much work you can extract out of a human body before it's spent. I'm pretty sure it's more than you'd get from a lemon.
That is some real "Red Pill" wisdom that would make The Matrix impossible.
The human body only generates 100 Millivolts maximum. You'd have to line up 15,000 humans wired parallel to have the Voltage for a 1.5 Volt LED. Even then, the Ohms of resistance in that much wiring would mean the Voltage would never get to the LED. So, the idea of a world-sized Virtual Reality computer powered by human Duracells is prima facie ridiculous.
1.5v is only 15 100mV humans.
And you'd add them in series to raise the voltage, not in parallel.
And... why the fuck am I explaining this? Bender doesn't understand meatbags, we already know that.
1 Millivolt is one-millionths of a Volt.
But yes, you're right on series, I had it in reverse.
Series wiring increases Voltage and keeps Current in Amps constant; parallel wiring keeps Voltage constant and increases Current. But either form of wiring wouldn't power the LED, nor would series wiring of every human being who ever lived or died power something like The Matrix.
As for Bender, he'd make a great Futurama lawn jockey, though Skynet would rain destruction on any humans who had one in their yard. 🙂
1 millivolt is like 1 millimeter. 1 thousandths. Mil equals 1000 in Latin and Spanish. I learned this in 2nd grade. You are still wrong in you math by 3 orders of magnitude.
Milli is thousandth
Micro is millionth
nano is billionth.
Especially the right hand.
I remember a report on the German wind power from offshore wind turbines. They produced $3billion dollars worth of energy for ONLY $7 billion. I tell people that my ancestors left Germany in the 1830s because it was full of Germans. So glad old Wolfgang left.
100 megatons is all it takes to create an epoch of cold and darkness.
Carl Sagan proved it.
100 megatons is all it takes to create an epoch of cold and darkness.
My ex-wife did it with far less.
Mine left in the 1850s and 1861 (didn't even knock the German mud off their boots before they were enlisted in the Union Army to fight in the Civil War).
Your ex wife?
I'm so confused.
Posted in the wrong place obviously
I was about to say, talk about "cold and darkness." 🙂
And ruin your entire day, according to the button from the Sixties.
Meanwhile in Brussels, Germany's new Economy and Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck wants to force the Energiewende plan on the rest of Europe.
Political markets aren't like regular markets.
Brussels. Elected by the peoples of Europe. Or something like that. Not.
Anyone concerned about climate change who isn't looking at nuclear power is nothing but a poseur. And yes, most people in the climate change arena are poseurs. Nuclear power is the only long term solution we have to climate neutral economy. Other alternative energies are worthwhile, but won't scale to where nuclear already can be. At least not without much more efficient battery storage. Which itself can turn out to be a climate disaster as we dig up all the rare earths.
The "icky nukes" phobia needs to be abandoned by anyone serious about climate change. Period. If you can't even discuss it, you're not serious.
Germany has been pouring money into hydrogen generation from wind and solar. It is only in proof of concept though they do have some green hydrogen fueling stations in the Fatherland. I believe someone built an airplane powered by it. It takes a lot of pixies to separate the hydrogen. And there is the issue of the rare earth metals for fuel cells. They could also just burn it at a carnot cycle power plant.
I have been highly interested in Hydrogen generation from solar-- and it seems that every few years you read about something, and then it goes dark. I remember some years ago reading about a guy in New Jersey who built a hydrogen solar set up and the media portrayed it as a completely self-sustaining home, completely disconnected from the grid. Then *poof* never heard another thing about it. I remember even reaching out to the guy in the story and exchanging a few emails with him.
I like the idea of hydrogen generation from Solar because if I can generate enough power with the solar, especially when I'm not home or electricity usage is low, I can live with the loss factor as long as I can produce a surplus.
My understanding is hydrogen isn't actually that tough to store and can be done in low pressure tanks. What I think is the reality though, is getting all this set up with a reliable way of hooking it back into your house is a lot harder than it looks, and requires a lot of tinkering and maintenance and in the end, may not be worth the input costs and ROI.

Notice what language they're speaking? Coincidence? I think not.
They interpret to English. They are a woke media outlet so the spin must be acknowledged. They did a lengthy story on the VW diesel motor emissions hoax and treated VW with kid gloves.
They are government propaganda.
This video is a fascinating watch, especially coupled with the article it's posted in. "Soon" with enough money and "political will" we will have green hydrogen.
It's right up there with the iron oxide battery. The tech is just around the corner, the only thing missing is the factory that powered by unicorn farts
Iron Oxide batteries will be shipped to your door by 202
23 by a self-driving electric truck.A real rust-bucket.
the problem with hydrogen is when burned to create power it creats H20 which is a bigger green house gas than CO2 its a no win if you believe its a problem. and can you imagine driving behind a water spewing car in the middle of winter ice roads every where
I live in Maine. Most roads are shit all winter. If it comes put warm it will go up. Water vapor is a greenhouse gas; a boiling water power station is also emitting that from the cooling towers. If you believe that CO2 is warming the planet then this breaks the chain of contributing to increased concentrations. Had -20 deg F last week so if you all want to warm the planet, feel free.
Do you have one of those sexy, bedroom Maine accents?
Why do you think it's called Bangor, Maine, Mayne? 😉
can you imagine driving behind a water spewing car in the middle of winter ice roads every where
What do you think the H in a hydrocarbon combustion reaction forms when it oxidizes?
HO2?
Radical answer
Germany has been pouring money into hydrogen generation from wind and solar
Which makes it even stupider of them to abandon their nukes:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/rrapier/2021/04/29/clean-hydrogen-from-nuclear-power/amp/
It would seem generating H2 from nukes as a byproduct would also be a solution for stored power that the world’s renewable schemes rely upon. Unfortunately, governments are devoted to wasting billions on massive battery projects that are likely to fail outside of massive customer rationing.
If that market peaks, it could known as a hydrogen bubble. (Three Mile Island reference).
Would taking a dose of Sodium Bicarbonate help a bubble like that?
😉
Anyone concerned about climate change who isn't looking at nuclear power is nothing but a poseur.
This is exactly why I don't take any of the climate change people seriously.
Bullshit. Renewables could not possibly supply nearly half the electricity. Night electrical usage alone makes this implausible, then throw in cloudy and windless days, and it becomes impossible.
I wonder if that 46.2% is rated capacity, not actual power delivered.
I believe they buy a lot of Norwegian hydroelectric.
And French nuclear.
The French just surrender theirs.
Nah. They sell it for a tidy profit to Germany at night and give the excess away to the Nordic countries for pumped hydroelectric storage. There is almost no marginal cost to nuclear power, so there's no reason not to run it at maximum power.
Thanks to the way the Paris accord is written, when the get electricity from Russia or Poland, that doesn't count as Germany polluting, it is Russia and Poland polluting.
Polish pollution, ich.
That is a favorite obfuscation by the unreliables crowd. What really blows my mind about this economic suicide is the moronic greens can't see the famous precision manufacturing for export their economy relies on will be completely gone in 20 years because of expensive power. No one in their right mind would invest in any new facilities from autos to data centers that are energy intensive. It's truly mind numbingly stupid. as an added bonus it should lead to the demise of the EU because they are too stupid to recognize unintended consequences.
Ther must be a German word for deriving pleasure from watching Germans try hard to fight climate change by slashing greenhouse gas emissions that result in electricity prices skyrocketing but missing its emissions reduction targets while burning fossil fuels sent from traditional enemy Russia.
I see what you did there.
Schädenscheissenfreude?
Germany's Failed
Bid To Be the Global Climate LeaderBit more concise.
Again, Bullwinkle? 🙂
“Well, last time I pulled a mentally unstable Austrian out of this hat. This time it’s just an enormous electricity bill. So, we’re making some progress.”
Green energy politicians all have one thing in common, a total lack of understanding of physics and thermodynamics. They think they can run a modern economy on windmills and unicorn farts.
If it worked it wouldn't REQUIRE NAZISM.
Didn't the Amish originally come from Germany? I think in the near future they will blend right in there.
