Brickbat: Pay as You Go

Quebec Premier François Legault said those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 will have to pay a special health tax. Legault did not say when the tax will start nor how much it will be. But he said it will be more than $50 or $100 ($40 or $80 U.S.) and would give people an incentive to get the vaccine.

And non-vaxxed people will have to wear a cloth badge on their clothing, and maybe get a special number--for health tracking purposes.
Make it easy. Just tattoo the number on their forearm.

So is Canuckistanistanistanistanistan going to track ALL of the taxpayers to see (and verify) if they've been vaccinated or not? Sounds quite heavy-handed to me!
Now health insurance... They make you pay more if you're a smoker, right, for many insurance policies? Now they're talking of charging you more for NOT being vaccinated! https://thehill.com/opinion/healthcare/567334-paying-a-price-for-choosing-not-to-be-vaccinated ... This is a far more libertarian-oriented way to go! FREEDOM for health insurance companies, as well as customers!
In Canada, the government is basically the insurance company. I suppose that I am not opposed to allocating the cost of COVID care separately based on vaccination status (though they really should also split by age: a 25 year old is very unlikely to be hospitalized regardless of vaccine). Which given that vaccinated folks are a tenth as likely to be hospitalized as unvaccinated would imply higher premiums.
It just really bothers me that this is portrayed as creating an incentive. Out of all the ways to portray this, why choose social engineering? Why not simply portray it as: the unvaccinated result in greater hospitalization than average and mean we have to pay a lot more overtime to doctors and nurses, so those marginal costs will be passed through to those who make the decision to not get vaccinated (ideally, tiered by age to reflect that people in their 20s are irrelevant and people in their 80s are insane). Just because you are no longer protecting people from the costs of a decision doesn't mean you can't respect it.
The vast vast vast vast majority of people will use $0 to get over covid, vaxxed or not. An honest accounting of 'additional hospital costs' spread out among the citizens like good socialists would also be close to $0.
But the Canadian government has 9 more boosters for every citizen, and dammit they are gonna put those boosters into arms.
I am creating an honest wage from home 1900 Dollars/week , that is wonderful, below a year gone i used to be unemployed during an atrocious economy. (cfg28) I convey God on a daily basis. I used to be endowed with these directions and currently it’s my duty to pay it forward and share it with everybody.
Here is where I started…..... Visit Here
My guess is the easiest way is to tax everyone and let vaxxed apply for a refund.
Why not just give everyone who lives to age 85 a huge cash bonus, and let them start making all kinds of improved health decisions* for themselves?
*(totally unrelated to that large broccoli farm I just bought)

How about the many hundreds (thousands?) of dollars saved per shot be applied as a tax credit for each of the unvaccinated. Both sides of the ledger should be considered.
"...hundreds (thousands?) of dollars saved per shot..."
Citation please! Or, what good drugs are you taking these days? I want some, too!
They don't know how much the tax is or when or how it will be implemented and enforced. What makes you think *anything* is being considered? No concept of how you're going to stay in the black making a vaccine available to everyone and then keeping a database and tracking down refuseniks.
If 2020/2021 has taught me anything besides who would tell the Nazis where the Jews were hiding, it's that libertarianism is great, but getting Drew Carey and the cast of "Whose line is it anyway?" into power is not significantly better.
Wayne Brady for president!
From Chappelle:
I'm Wayne Brady, bitch!
Not that it matters, since this is all about authority and signaling rather than recouping health costs, but the pharma companies are selling at anywhere from $3 to $30 a dose.
Of course there were some outright subsidies for the development, but that's money spent so the government only saves the incremental cost of one vaccine if you decline.
Unless you're thinking the vaccine itself will cause widespread health problems in the long term and the decliners are saving those costs.
Price per dose times X doses, distribution, labor to staff the jabberies including but not limited to reception, the jabber and admin.
Quebec would do better requiring fatties to lose the weight or face tax penalties.
Carrot or stick? Fuck that, beat the people with a carrot!
This is also one of the downsides of government single payer healthcare. The incentive is to coerce the patient into compliance. We used to joke about cheeseburger taxes, now Canada essentially has one. Under a private system, a private insurance company could simply charge higher rates for smokers, or those who refuse to get vaccinated. But a government system demands that everyone conform.

Under 25 single males have paid higher auto insurance premiums since before I started driving (1973); so have other high-risk demographics (smokers, obese, gene defectives) and is the proper and natural pricing of insurance. You are paying that something bad will happen to you and the benevolent insurers are praying that nothing does. If you think your insurance premium is too high it is because the investors think that something bad will happen to you and you should rethink what it is you are trying to insure.
Government Health Care is neither insurance nor benevolence. Charity or tax-payer funded does not consider the risks or the costs because the government is neither the recipient of nor the funder of those services.
Cheese Justice John Roberts approves
Now that's kind of a cheesy comment!
I hope he realizes the error in his plan and jumps in a woodchipper.
The entrenchment that has occurred among the voluntarily unvaccinated is largely a response to vaccine mandates. Pushing them harder is not a solution and is unethical.
Why should le pharm make all the money off this thing.
