New California Data Reinforce the Evidence That Omicron Is Less Virulent Than Delta
Omicron patients were much less likely to have severe symptoms.

A new study of COVID-19 patients in California reinforces the evidence that the omicron variant, while highly contagious, is much less likely to cause serious symptoms than prior iterations of the coronavirus. Compared to people infected by the delta variant, the researchers found, people infected with omicron were half as likely to be hospitalized, one-quarter as likely to require intensive care, and less than one-tenth as likely to die. When omicron patients were admitted to a hospital, their average stay was 70 percent shorter.
Berkeley epidemiologist Joseph Lewnard and his collaborators examined the records of nearly 70,000 Kaiser Permanente patients in Southern California who tested positive for COVID-19 from November 30 to January 1. During that period, omicron accounted for three-quarters of COVID-19 cases. While 11 of the delta patients received mechanical ventilation, none of the omicron patients did; just one omicron patient died, compared to 14 deaths in the delta group. "During a period with mixed Delta and Omicron variant circulation," Lewnard and his co-authors report, "SARS-CoV-2 infections with presumed Omicron variant infection were associated with substantially reduced risk of severe clinical endpoints and shorter durations of hospital stay."
Recent COVID-19 trends in the United States and other countries show that cases are exploding. But deaths have risen much less dramatically, making the current surge far less lethal than last winter's. According to the New York Times COVID-19 database, the seven-day average of newly identified cases has more than sextupled in the last month, while the seven-day average of daily deaths has risen by 34 percent.
One possible explanation for that contrast is increased resistance to COVID-19 as a result of vaccination and prior infection. But because the California study compares delta and omicron outcomes in the same place during the same period, its results suggest that omicron is inherently less dangerous than delta to any given patient, possibly because it is less apt to infect the lungs.
Even among unvaccinated patients, those infected by omicron were 60 percent less likely than those infected by delta to be hospitalized with symptoms. The reduced risk from omicron also held up across age groups, and it was apparent regardless of whether patients had comorbidities or had previously been infected by COVID-19.
Lewnard et al. note that the "consistency of the association of Omicron variant infection with reduced risk of hospitalization across age and comorbidity categories, and regardless of prior immunity from vaccination or SARS-CoV-2 infection, during the same month and in the same population, argues against host or behavioral factors as causes of the observed disease attenuation with the Omicron variant." They add that "the finding of a reduction in severity of Omicron in patients with known prior infection is compelling evidence of an intrinsically less severe infection, rather than only different (more immune) persons becoming infected with the Omicron variant."
Previous research also has found that omicron infection is associated with a reduced risk of severe symptoms. Between October 1 and December 6, according to a South African study, COVID-19 patients infected by omicron were 80 percent less likely to be hospitalized than patients infected by other variants. A Scottish study that looked at patients who tested positive for the coronavirus from November 1 to December 19 found that "Omicron is associated with a two-thirds reduction in the risk of COVID-19 hospitalisation when compared to Delta."
According to an English study of people tested from December 1 through December 14, omicron patients were 41 percent less likely than delta patients to stay in the hospital overnight. A Canadian study of cases identified between November 22 and December 25 found that omicron patients were 65 percent less likely to be hospitalized than delta patients.
"These findings collectively suggest that differences in viral factors between the Omicron and the Delta variants, such as differences in viral tropism or virulence factors, might be driving the observed relative reductions in disease severity," Lewnard et al. write. "Recent ex vivo studies demonstrate higher replication of the Omicron variant in the human upper respiratory tract as compared to the small airways of the lung, consistent with animal experiments suggesting that disease from infection with the Omicron variant might be confined to the large airway."
Like other studies, Lewnard et al. say, "our findings suggest vaccine protection against infection with the Omicron variant may be lower than protection against infection with the Delta variant." But also consistent with other data, this study indicates that vaccination provides strong protection against severe disease caused by either variant.
Among cases identified in outpatient settings, for example, delta patients who had received three vaccine doses were 85 percent less likely to be hospitalized with symptoms than unvaccinated delta patients; the risk reduction for omicron patients was 62 percent. The authors say "evidence for a reduction in severe outcomes among vaccinated cases with both Delta and Omicron variant infections in our study…suggests substantial public health benefits from continued COVID-19 vaccination."

So of all the predictions of our health authorities, all but one has fallen by the wayside. The Vaccines didn't protect us from getting sick. They did not stop the spread. It wasn't "Two shots to end COVID". In the end, the Vaccine proved an effective mechanism for protecting oneself from ending up in the hospital (or worse) for COVID.

But I wish the scolds who repeated every statement of the health officials without question for months- insisting that if we would just vaccinate the disease would be gone- would actually take a few moments of contrition and really reflect on their sanctimony. They spent months needlessly harassing anyone who objected to vaccination. They carried water for the officials who instituted vaccine mandates and vaccine passports. And not even the most draconian of rules in places like New York worked.
From Israel, to New York, to my own county where the vaccination rate is north of 90%- vaccination did not end this pandemic, and people trying to create the moral urgency for folks to stick needles in their arms on their behalf should remember that not only were they wrong on the MORAL OBLIGATIONS, but they were wrong on the FACTS as well.

Here's your major error. You'll never get that apology because as each claim has been solidly debunked, the followup position of the now-debunked constituency is to say "we never said that/we never claimed that".
When written or video evidence is presented of them saying or claiming exactly [that], then the next rejoinder is to claim some sort of multi-dimensional contextual reasoning for the statement they say they never uttered being uttered.

A year ago with Alpha the vaccine was wildly effective. Delta was way more contagious and different enough that that calculus changed. The vaccine was now to protect yourself. But the rhetoric didn't change. Omicron evades prior immunity (all immunity) for infection. It's somewhere between chickenpox and measels in infectivity, which is pretty incredible. Prior infection and vaccination is a great way to keep you out of the hospital, but not going to stop the spread.
The rhetoric is still where it was this time last year. They aren't even gaslighting yet. They're just pulling a catholic church and having a shitfit that Copernicus said the earth wasn't the center of the universe.

You need to be careful with interpreting this data. If a population is 80% (or more) vaccinated, then you should expect to see an 80% (or more) vaccinated population in the hospital, not a 50-50 split.
I think it is pretty conclusive that this vaccine protects you to some extent from the virus. Of course, I think that the VAST, VAST number of people in this country under the age of 55 were at very little risk from the virus in the first place.
Again, the biggest shame about the sanctimony and politicizing of this issue is that solutions had to be one size fits all, rather than nuanced to fit an individual's needs. Whether you are pro-vax or anti-vax we should all resist the urge to follow that mob mentality. There are people who absolutely ought to get the vaccine for their own benefit, and a lot of people who probably don't need it. The worst thing is to try and create a one size fits all socialized solution to this.

I would be unsurprised to find that when everything is adjusted for- again, the vaccine gives benefits. But, as I noted in that Bailey article, wearing a helmet might reduce your risk of dying from falling apples, but that is a pretty small risk to begin with. The vast majority of people under the age of 50 have so little risk from this virus that you are cutting in half (or more) an already tiny risk.

During the Delta surge good local data, recent so not uncluding OG covid, was published ever week here. Infections were 3x for unvaccinated, hospitalizations varied but anywhere from 4x to 40x on any given week, same with deaths, and they were that wild because so few vaccinated were in the hospital that the number single digit so even one or two change was big.
That's infection/hopsitalization/death rates compared to population, not relative to each other.
In short, there was some mild reduction in infection, measureable reduction in hospitalization, and significant reduction in death rates. If you meter out by age, it's more dramatic, because a great percentage of the vaccinated who were at greatest risk of hospitalization were significantly older with lots of comorbidities so at risk no matter what you do. I posted an excellent analysis of this and he called me a name that would make my mother blush.

I'm not convinced the vaccine has provided any significant difference in outcomes for individuals vs what would have happened without the vaccine.
It seems that all the reports of efficacy are short-term, like all the "studies" of mask effectiveness that only covered a couple weeks during the peak infection time vs non-peak elsewhere. 80% of the 50+ population is "fully vaccinated". Almost all numbers we have received throughout this are between cloudy and shit, but the vaccination rates should be pretty accurate. 2000+ died of covid yesterday, despite 80+% of the most at-risk population being vaccinated.

The opposite motivation is behind that change. Payers (and honestly, patients themselves) hate it when you end up as an inpatient, so all the effort is spent around keeping that from happening while reclassifying any possible service so it can be done in an outpatient setting, preferably off-campus.
Hospitals make far, far better margins off inpatient services, but they can't fill the beds without payers having a conniption. So, the beds go away.

Oh weird. In a state with an ~80% vaccination rate, the IFR for omicron and delta *combined* was 0.002% and not something closer to, say, 20%. Let's see, if I had a virus that was 99.9% non-lethal, alone that would be 700 dead in a caseload of 700K people. If I had a virus that was 100% lethal and a vaccine that was 95% effective, universally applied, it would be 35K dead. If it were 95% effective but only 80% adopted, that would be 42K dead. If it were 99.9% non-lethal, 75% adopted, and 95% effective, that's still 200 dead and if it were 99.9% non-lethal, 100% adopted and 95% effective, that would still be 35 dead.
So, the question remains how we got to hundreds dead to 15 dead with 75-80% adoption of a 95% effective vaccine?

Heather tells a great anecdote of a very good friend of hers who was 147% on board with the Vaccinenacht and just got boosted. She started suffering from side effects and decided she was "done" with the entire thing, done with the pandemic, done with the "get your vaccine" droning messaging... just done. And now she's losing friends and family members.

What if we had nothing with the initial virus and just allowed it to run its course? Who among the healthy was getting sick? Who was dying? Old people who were obese and diabetic were at highest risk. Chronically ill people who were immuno-suppressed. Children? No. Adolescents? No. Young adults? No. Middle-aged adults? A few.
Instead, we forfeited the future of the young to benefit the old. To much of the world, we administered an experimental vaccine the long-term effects of which still are unknown. By keeping those alive who, otherwise, would have died, we provided a huge breeding-ground for the viral mutations that we now are suffering en masse with more likely to come; for example, Deltacron.
Politicians became our physicians. We blindly plunged into the black void of the unknown in the name of humanitarianism, a term that has become an obscenity as described in the novel, Retribution Fever. We are sacrificing the whole to benefit the few, often the unworthy few.
