Brickbat: Bad Medicine

As Jerod Draper was dying of a meth overdose, video shows that staff at the Harrison County, Indiana, jail did not immediately seek medical attention for him. Instead, they placed him in a restraint chair and placed a hood over his head, used their Tasers on him repeatedly, stomped his feet, and used pain compliance holds on him. Harrison County officials agreed to pay $1 million to settle a lawsuit brought by Draper's family. But no one at the jail has been criminally charged in the incident.

Guess we’re up to speed (although if I lived and paid taxes in that county I’d feel a bit cranky).

When someone is dying the state is always ready to help.
I’d say the guards were right.
The first thought when an inmate acts irrationally is that they’re being a jerk, not dying of something that shouldn’t be in the prison.
This dirtbag’s life wasn’t worth $1 million, not even a penny, so I’m guessing the settlement is just to make it go away.
Even if the guy is faking it, you don't use Tasers on someone who is restrained.
Also, if you read the article, they think he ingested the drug before he got to the jail.
What's your life worth?
Future earnings and value to family is bullshit. You can get struck by a meteor or die of an aneurysm at any time, regardless of care or caution. No one is guaranteed tomorrow or even a dinner.
So, I’d estimate my value as the lunch in front of me: $2.75, the price of a slice of pizza on my street.
Don’t give me the “$1 million is for pain and suffering” bullshit, either. Lots of people pay good money to enjoy being tied up for pain and suffering. Lots of people end their lives.
Since we can’t determine who may have enjoyed it and who didn’t, no one’s value should be increased or decreased based on pain and suffering.
Let him be worth a slice, too.
What's your life worth?
Here's what the voters think it is worth.
SGLI pays out $400,000 for an Active Duty death and the DoD pays a tax-free death gratuity payment of $12,420; For those whose death is as a result of hostile actions and occurred in a designated combat operation or combat zone or while training for combat or performing a hazardous duty, the payment is $100,000.
Lick some more boots.
Do that to the county prosecutor and see how he likes it.
