Maribel Duarte says her 13-year-old son was vaccinated against COVID-19 without her permission at Barack Obama Global Prep Academy in Los Angeles. Duarte said school officials gave her son pizza in return for getting vaccinated and told him not to tell. The Los Angeles Unified School District said it could not comment on the claims but did say steps are in place for vaccinated students to receive prizes. The school system has mandated that all students 12 and older receive the vaccine by Jan. 10. Those who aren't vaccinated at that time will be moved back to virtual learning.

This whole thing is OUTRAGEOUS!!! The nurse should be fired for the "don't tell" part, for sure. The parents need to know for several reasons - there could be an adverse reaction, they could schedule the kid to get the vaccination elsewhere, etc.

The nurse and/or school officials had the same attitude towards these parents as our own Rev Arthur has toward anyone they imagine might potentially have even slightly different views: force “modernity” (ie, their beliefs) on ‘em. It’s all on the annual physical clearance form that their pediatrician must submit each year. Vaccination history, allergies, conditions that may affect physical activity, learning challenges, and any medications.

This story may not be entirely as it seems, though. Kids forge parents’ signatures all the time. Schools lie. Tough to know who to believe, but I don’t think the mom has the whole story, or she’d have sued by now.

This particular school is in a part of L.A. where a lot of the kids in public schools aren't raised by either of their biological parents. This kid seems to live with at least his mother, but something like 40% of the students at some of the LAUSD schools are in foster care or group homes and who knows how many more are being raised by grandparents or some other "relative" (in the case of "dreamer" kids who were sent across the border unaccompanied that can be anything from a cousin to a friend of the family).

The rate of kids living with custodial parents might be higher at BO Academy since it's a public charter school (until UTLA gets it shut down, anyway), and might require some kind of effort to get kids into. With their current performance levels (5% of students at grade level in math and 12% in reading), it's hard to say whether getting kicked out of the physical building is actually a punishment or if it'd amount to a lateral move at worst though.

Early in the spring, we got a call from the school that our youngest was light-headed, fatigued, and clammy during lunch, which was right after recess. No fever, no cough, no congestion, no other symptoms. Admins said he had to come home. Working from home, no problem. Clearly sick when I picked him up. After eating lunch at home and about 30 min. of R&R, he was clearly better. About a week later, the nurse calls with the same problem. "So I need to come pick him up?" I said. "No, I was out of the office when he came in last time and I think our substitute nurse was just being cautious.", she replied.

One kid. Presumably one illness. Two nurses. Two different courses of treatment. I understand it's a public school nurse and didn't get my hackles up but, at the same time, neither one was injecting him with anything.

Not for kids. Almost every pediatric group and clinical trial recommended a 3-5 month delay for a second shot, and only if the kid is at risk for developing complications.

Frankly, adults shouldn’t be getting shots sooner than 3 months apart. Too many risks, zero benefit for getting it in under 3 months.
