Chris Cuomo Violated Journalism Norms To Help His Brother and Should Resign From CNN
He clearly advised former Gov. Andrew Cuomo on how to survive the scandals.

The office of New York's attorney general released thousands of pages of testimony relating to the sexual harassment allegations against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and the new information makes it abundantly clear that CNN host Chris Cuomo involved himself in his brother's efforts to survive public scrutiny. Contrary to Chris Cuomo's claim that he did not act as an official adviser to his brother, the documents reveal that he actively used his journalistic access and connections to find out more information about the accusers—and potentially, to discredit them.
Chris texted his brother's long-serving handler, Melissa DeRosa, about one of the accusers, saying, "I have a lead on the wedding girl." The wedding girl is Anna Ruch, who accused Andrew of making a pass at her. Chris's "lead" was a possible means of casting aspersions on her accusation; Chris told the attorney general's fact-finders that he had learned of a source who might say Ruch had ulterior motives.
Despite claiming during his interview with the attorney general's office that "I would never do oppo research on anybody alleging anything like this," he was clearly engaged in a form of opposition research. He wasn't just passively listening to his brother's side of the story and offering words of encouragement: He took part in the strategizing.
That's not a crime, of course. It's unsurprising that he would take his brother's side and want to help him. But it was wrong for Chris to mislead his viewers about the role he played, and it was wildly unethical to ignore the scandal during his broadcast while privately participating in the governor's response efforts.
The matter was badly handled by the network: At the height of the pandemic, CNN broke its own policy and allowed Andrew to give fluff interviews to Chris that glamorized the then-governor's response to COVID-19. These interviews never should have taken place, and they look especially ridiculous now that we know about the nursing home scandal and subsequent coverup.
Given that Chris significantly understated his involvement in his brother's strategizing, CNN must discipline him. The network says it's reviewing the anchor's conduct. It is difficult to imagine any competent review reaching the conclusion that he should keep his job. An important television journalist being the brother of a high-profile government official was an ethically challenging situation at best, and if there was some line in the sand that made it workable enough, Chris Cuomo clearly crossed it.
"By keeping Cuomo on the air and in his job, CNN would send the message that journalistic ethics are only for the little people and viewers are on their own," wrote The Atlantic's David Graham. "Cuomo should take some time off and reflect on his chosen profession—and if and when he comes back, perhaps he should choose a new beat."
An entirely new line of work might be for the best.

At least suspend Cuomo, lest you think his actions warrant termination.
This was some of your better work
Was it touching?
If you were here, I would kiss you full on the mouth.
I always thought the Cuomos were above this touchy-feely political stuff.
Yeah but their behavior this time is an assault on the senses.
Great work...but the largest stockholder of the company that bought CNN has said he wants it to become a news channel again and that would mean terminating some "talent".
It's not like they bring value.
Well, the difficult decision as to "who should be first to go?" certainly has been made easier.
Now he just has to decide which of their other "talent" are fact-averse, talentless, propaganda-mongering, wastes-of-space.
A decision made much more difficult by still needing to have enough people to stay on the air. If I were to make such a decision, moving to "a more journalistic approach", CNN would have a few days of running test patterns.
Now do the entirty of the media coving up molestation Joe.

of testimony relating to the sexual harassment allegations against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and the new information makes it abundantly clear that CNN host Chris Cuomo involved himself in his brother's efforts to survive public scrutiny.
Um, like the Waukesha SUV accident, the internet had the scoop on this what, six months ago? It didn't require "new information" for us to know this.
Oh, and by the way, he did NOT violate Journalism "Norms". He violated Journalism ethics, but not journalism norms. This behavior is all too normal within journalism, and in fact, I'm more surprised when it doesn't happen.
That's not a crime, of course. It's unsurprising that he would take his brother's side and want to help him. But it was wrong for Chris to mislead his viewers about the role he played, and it was wildly unethical to ignore the scandal during his broadcast while privately participating in the governor's response efforts.
You realize that Chris Cuomo is not a journalist and CNN is not a news channel, right? Journalistic standards and ethics have nothing to do with this story.
Ditto
I say promote him and give him a pay raise.
"This Is CNN."
"hey look especially ridiculous now that we know about the nursing home scandal and subsequent coverup."
We knew about the nursing home scandal before those interviews took place. Hell, it was PREDICTED that thousands of elderly nursing home residents would die as a result of the policy before the policy was even implemented.
I mean, Jesus... "Journalism Norms"? Really? The Washington Post under Ben Bradlee was KNOWN to be completely editorially compromised by the Kennedy administration, as Bradlee had a very close, personal relationship with John F. Kennedy, and became a mouthpiece for the administration. Yet this period of the newspaper is considered the nadir of hard-hitting print journalism.
Your better term is "ethics", because that points to a set of ideals even if not widely practiced... that journalism can aspire to.
And Marilyn Monroe ultimately paid the price.
She was also a Kennedy mouthpiece.
Kudos!
Because people got away with something in the past (without anybody knowing about it at the time) isn't a good reason to let blatant and open violations of standards go when you find them in real time.
It's the difference between a prosecutor calling a witness that lies on the stand, and a prosecutor instructing a witness to lie on the stand. It's not CNN's fault of Chris Cuomo violated standards without their knowledge. Now that they know he was working behind the scenes to spin the news in someone's favor, they can't keep him on the air and make any kind of pretense of objectivity. And America's faith in the news media is testing all time lows at the moment.
Or, they keep him on because FYTW.
The #MeToo people should be very upset about this. They've cancelled people for much less.
Nah, that would be a violation of OBL's second law.
#DemocratsAreNeverWrong
(personally, I think the stupid SOB Cuomo should be fired)
I should add that I don't think this is a cancel culture issue. I think CNN should try to reassert some credibility for the news department, and you just can't do that by keeping Chris Cuomo as the face of your franchise anymore.
The #MeToo people do things for their own reasons, but working against the victims of the governor of New York's sexual behavior to help him defend his position of power against the accusations shouldn't be kosher from their perspective.
They've got their reasons. I've got mine.
They brought back the guy who pulled out his dick on a zoom call.
This is nothing to them.
#MeToo was always purely partisan Ken. As such, defending Cuomo from accusations isn't just Kosher, doing otherwise is Treif.
Yeah, and they went against Andrew Cuomo anyway.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/07/nyregion/andrew-cuomo-metoo.html
Cuomo certainly has a face for radio.
I'm sorry, but it's the first amendment: no reasonable person would assume that he's being honest about his brother.
The question isn't whether what he did was legal. The question isn't whether CNN keeping him is legal.
The question is whether what he did and his continued presence at CNN hurts CNN's credibility, and the answer is "yes".
CNN doesn't really have any credibility among the sanefolk. Needless to say, to their remaining viewership this revelation doesn't actually matter. Either they'll think it's a right-wing lie or they'll apply some mental gymnastics to sweep this under the rug. So whether Lil' Cuomo remains at CNN or not is of no consequence...
If everyone on the right knew that they were full of crap before, this just pulled the curtain up for the rest of America. And the guy behind the curtain isn't just not a real wizard. He's a clown.
Has anyone asked the seven viewers if this bothers them?
Really don't see how CNN could possibly hurt their credibility anymore than they already have. It's the difference between third or fourth place in the race to the bottom. It's all rounding errors at this point.
But millions of Americans still do believe CNN has credibility. Whether they should believe in CNN's credibility isn't the issue if the fact is that they do (or they did). There's no pretense anymore if they keep Chris Cuomo around. He's putting a clown nose on the public face of CNN--and not just for Republicans. #MeToo progressives should be upset about this.
This is right. CNN was a full participant in this clown show. Putting them both on was their attempt to weaponize the pandemic and they didn't much care Andrew killed 15,000 people.
I don't see this as actually being much of an issue for most. It isn't like CNN is going to really do a deep dive into this and let's face it - we live in a time where people do actually live in cones of silence within their own hive. They simply don't listen to anything that goes against their distorted belief system.
Reason likes to pick on Q-anon for this but it's absolutely true that C-aNoN exists in similar numbers.
Yeah, I was making a joke. Not a good joke, mind you, but a joke nonetheless.
"The question is whether what he did and his continued presence at CNN hurts CNN's credibility, and the answer is "yes"."
What credibility? After four years of the liberal media's (CNN, MSNBC, WaPo, NYT, and the less famous ones) incessant nattering about the Russia Collusion, which was a complete lie, I have written them off entirely. I don't trust them for the weather or the ball scores. The only reasonable thing you can do is roll your eyes whenever anybody cites any of those "reliable sources"
Whether they should have credibility and whether they do have credibility with some people are two separate questions.
Why should he resign from CNN? He is right where he belongs.
Oh look. Another story that doesn't exist.
What the blue hell does this even mean?
Earlier today there were comments about this very subject, with remarks about how Reason never covers stories like that because Reason is in the tank with the Democrats and Biden who they are never critical of.
Well, it took <Reason long enough to notice. 😛
Damn straight! They'd have never noticed if not for the people in the comments section chastising the magazine for ignoring what is really important!
ALL the left wing organizations are covering this now. At the exact same time. Do you find that in any way odd?
This is a story about CNN. I suppose this means you view CNN as blatantly and explicitly "The Democratic Party," then, or some vehicle of such.
You can suppose whatever you want. Doesn't make it true.
As I've said in previous serious conversations, and I will be serious for a moment, demographics. The job of CNN is the same as any other news outlet: to sell advertising. So their content is going to reflect their perceived demographic. That is why the content on FOX is different from MSNBC. They cater to different demographics. They even have different commercials. In fact you can infer a lot about the demographic someone is trying to reach by what they are trying to sell.
They have just barely 1 million viewers. They aren't increasing viewership but catering it. They do this at the behest of the left. This is the same ignorant shit Mike says. You really have gotten dumber following jeff and Mike around like a lost puppy.
Cratering*
Will you seriously fuck off? I don't read your comments. I'm not curious. I don't care.
Ideas!
peek a boo
We know you’re not curious. You’re just a crank defender of the democrats.
All you do is clutter the page when I'm trying to have conversations with people, instead of about people.
LOL
All you do is clutter the page when I'm trying to have conversations with people, instead of about people.
That's amusing from someone whose first action on every thread is insulting others. If he were really interested in conversations he'd skip that step.
In reality he's a narcissist and knows insulting people will get them to respond. As he's admitted before he's only here to ruin the thread for everyone else.
Are you referring to me in the third person? Cute.
Ideas!
Coming for you chumby
You don’t really have conversations. You blindly attack non democrats and rant. You basically shitpost and disrupt OUR discourse.
U mean news brought to u by Pfizer? As da Kung Flu propaganda now pays for all the......, propaganda mouths they seek.
The Phucko Knows
That actually only occurred in your strawman post dumbass.
It means sarc’s broken.
Do you just adopt the personality of whatever leftist you currently fall in love with? This is mikes shtick from last year. Stop stanning for democrats. Youre allowed to attack them shitlib.
>>"By keeping Cuomo on the air and in his job, CNN would send the message that journalistic ethics are only for the little people and viewers are on their own,"
lol these fuckwads think CNN still has juice anywhere but airports.
Here's the issue. So let's say someone is nominated as a Supreme Court justice, and during his confirmation hearing, he's accused of raping or sexually assaulting someone years before. There isn't any evidence other than the accusation itself. It's just a question of whom to believe, the accuser or the nominee.
Well, that was the situation, here, where Chris Cuomo had Michael Avenatti on his CNN show to discuss the credibility of the woman who accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqgZZyNPlSA
Michael Avenatti has been sentenced to 30 months in a federal penitentiary since then--for
extortionthreatening to lie about someone in the news unless they paid him off. After being convicted by a jury for something like that, CNN can't legitimately have Michael Avenatti on their broadcasts talking about who's supposedly guilty of what--at least, they can't do that and maintain their credibility as a news organization.Likewise, they can't legitimately maintain their credibility as a news organization and keep Chris Cuomo on--after he's been busted helping people spin stories, not just on his own network but helping someone spin the news everywhere.
This should be obvious. Other obvious statements like this are that Jeffrey Epstein shouldn't be hired by a security company to protect a girls' summer camp for troubled teens, O.J. shouldn't be hired as a therapist by a company that does marriage counseling. Bernie Madoff shouldn't be hired by a financial planning company to handle their clients' money, and Harvey Weinstein shouldn't be hired by your company to write your policies on sexual harassment.
That's how it is with CNN and Chris Cuomo now.
If CNN wants to keep him on, that's their prerogative. Good luck trading on anything like credibility in the future. Progressives should be mad as hell about this. They're making it harder for progressives to maintain the pretense of credibility. How do you keep your cred with #MeToo and keep your prime time guy--after he's conspired to defend someone's disgusting sexual behavior in the media? The answer is you can't.
Ken, the people running CNN and people who think like them do not give a shit whether rational people like us believe they have no credibility. I mean, the only benefit here is to figuratively rub their faces in it. Regardless, they will not change.
I think the advertisers do care whether viewers see them as credible. I think advertisers and CNN care that their viewership numbers have been in a downward spiral. I think no one should have any faith in CNN's version of the news, but I think lots of people still do--regardless of whether they should.
Credibility with whom? They don't care about, or want, credibility with the other team. And they don't need any credibility with their own team. You're positing some third group, of which there are very, very few remaining in America. Everything is tribal now.
Please see my comment above.
All of the cable networks saw steep declines in viewership versus 2020, when the coverage was focused on the final weeks of the presidential race.
In primetime, Fox News was on top with an average of 2.3 million total viewers, a drop of 53% from October 2020. MSNBC averaged 1.2 million, off by 56%, and CNN posted 661,000, down by 73%."
https://deadline.com/2021/11/fox-news-the-five-ratings-october-1234866535/
CNN was getting clobbered before this, and this will make their credibility even worse than it was. They are seen as being a more credible source of mainstream news than more progressive MSNBC. That perception of their credibility is in trouble, and keeping Chris Cuomo on isn't about to help their case at all.
The issue there is there's plenty of 'angel' investors willing to lose money on the media if they get to control it.
I mean, I appreciate that CNN shouldn't have an credibility, but the fact is that they do with some people.
Some people will pay hipsters to pierce their nipples for them! Whether they should is another question.
>>But it was wrong for Chris to mislead his viewers about the role he played
please tell us you understand all media misleads its viewers about the role it plays.
This lack of understanding explains a lot.
If he gets fired he can always apply at McDonald's. On second thought, he is under qualified for a job flipping hamburgers.
He should’ve learned from the old saw: it ain’t the crime, but the cover-up. In any case, fuck him. He’s part of CNN’s ( glorious) march to death-as with progressivism itself-by a thousand cuts.
OT
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the central bank was prepared to prepared to quicken the pullback of its easy-money policies, opening the door to raising interest rates in the first half of next year as it grapples with inflation and a potential new virus wave that could exacerbate supply-chain disruptions.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/powell-warns-omicron-variant-could-worsen-inflation-boosting-bottlenecks-11638280800?
The Federal Reserve is getting ready to raise interest rate to head off inflation--while Biden and the progressives fight to pass trillions in permanent Green New Deal and entitlement spending that will only make it worse?!
This should be the lead story every day.
And last I heard, they'll need to raise the debt ceiling by sometimes between December 4th and December 14th. This is all coming to a head. Let's hope McConnell keeps his promise and refuses to help them raise the debt ceiling.
I love how Biden is going to fight inflation by throwing trillions of dollars around. Should work just as well as throwing gas on a fire.
Update!!!
Chris Cuomo has been suspended from CNN indefinitely.
"New York (CNN Business) CNN said Tuesday that it has suspended Chris Cuomo "indefinitely" after new documents released this week indicated that the anchor was more intimately involved than previously known in helping his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, craft a defense amid a flurry of sexual misconduct allegations."
https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/30/media/chris-cuomo-suspended/index.html
Chris Cuomo is done.
Cuomo is nomo.
And if they dump Don Lemon, then it will be no mo’ homo.
And given his legal problems and likely public embarrassment from his sexual assault trial coming up, him leaving is not outside the realm of the possible.
Bear in mind that the Zoom pervert was suspended indefinitely and was later reinstated.
If exposing yourself to your colleagues isn't a firing offense, then this probably isn't either.
No he is gone. The Atlantic has spoken..the social registry will be expunged with the Cuomo's
Chris Cuomo is being accused of working through journalist channels to try and find out the identities of the women who were making accusations against his brother.
He may have been unmaking women, if not to intimidate or retaliate against them for making accusations against his brother then to prepare responses to their allegations for media consumption.
I think this is unforgivable in certain circles. If his brother were still a viable candidate for president, this might be different, but his brother has been knocked off his perch. CNN has nothing to gain by putting him back on the air--and plenty to lose.
He's no longer got a special in, so he's easily replaceable.

"Why bother to defend him"
I would have no idea why anyone would want to defend Chris Cuomo. I didn't defend him. I hadn't even heard of him before today.
I saw it at the daily mail.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10260517/Chris-Cuomo-SUSPENDED-indefinitely-CNN.html
In their comment section this one stood out. Note the handle.

Give me a bleepin break you bunch of phonies and self righteous liars.
You mean tell me you wouldn't offer advice to your brother and help him
out if these shoes were in your feet. Did he really do something so
awful to get crucified like this? He wasnt a Matt Lauer or Bill Cosby
- so big stinking deal he fired off some texts so spare me the nonsense
arguments. Bunch of witch hunting fools. America is doomed....
Another fun story on the recent shooting:
President Biden was asked whether he would visit the family members and victims of the Michigan school shooting said.
“I don’t know that I’m able to do that. I don’t even have the detail of who the families are,"
...or maybe...what races they are?
Translation: "My handlers haven't told me what they want to do yet."
"I don't even know if they're clean to touch."
Opps the Atlantic says its time to go and the Reason (I want to suck anyone at the NYT's you know what to show how woke I am) staff jumps on board. The Cuomo's are scum but Chris was showing something we should applaud in the woke world..he was sticking up for family. If he wasn't a straight "white" male he would not be suspended and you know it. Why is Lemon still around with the sexual allegations? Toobin wacking off on Teams? Oh well he is the right "tribe." I don't have any issue with Cuomo losing his job, he was a joke but time to apply the same rational to the rest of the loser brigade at CNN..and let's not stop there Reason
Just paste the Tucker Carlson transcript. Don’t pretend you came up with that independently.
Why does anyone need Tucker Carlson to reach those conclusions. This is how these people operate. It’s not a secret.
Doesn't this all sort of assume he was ever a journalist in the first place?
"Violated Journalism Norms"
What are those norms today?
If you ask me, that ship sailed long ago for television news, once it transitioned to pure entertainment programming. There is nothing left anywhere in terms of norms on television news.
But reading some of the comments here, it seems that many believe that television news still has a bastion of credibility at networks like OAN, Newsmax, and Fox News.
To believe such may seem extraordinarily insane, but not if these networks are considered to be running entertainment programming. For entertainment, much like for ice-cream, subjectivity of what's good is the only possible standard.
I watch two programs most weekends on CNN; Fareed Zakaria GPS, and Smerconish. These programs seem reminiscent of something like old time objectivity. I can find nothing else on CNN, or MSNBC, or Fox News that is similarly reminiscent. All the rest of it is a big wasteland of mindless entertainment.
Sure, Cuomo should go. Another talking head can fill that hour of entertainment programming in the vast wasteland. But kicking out Cuomo is not getting rid of a bad apple in the otherwise norms-adhering population of cable news.
But reading some of the comments here, it seems that many believe that television news still has a bastion of credibility at networks like OAN, Newsmax, and Fox News
Who said or inferred that? I haven't seen anyone make that claim here.
I watch two programs most weekends on CNN; Fareed Zakaria GPS, and Smerconish. These programs seem reminiscent of something like old time objectivity.
Only if you're using the most bizarre definitions possible for "objectivity".
This is sort of quaint, like demanding a sex worker be fired because it's been discovered they're guilty of adultery.
I could see a problem if CNN was even *pretending* to be a little objective, albeit with a partisan preference (for example something like the Guardian). Then you could make a case he had abused the trust of his viewers.
But about midway through the last POTUS, CNN changed their model. Even the headlines make it obvious that they have an agenda, people who read CNN *want* that agenda, and Cuomo hasn't violated their trust at all.
The only small quibble might be that CNN and its viewers wanted him to promote the Democratic party as a whole, and at some point continuing to defend his brother was counterproductive to that goal. But that's a minor sin and plenty of other Democrats were guilty as well.
When it comes to the Cuomo clan, there is no question of ethics...because they have none. Therefor the idea of ethics and integrity mean nothing to the Cuomos.
As for CNN and their long downward spiral into oblivion noting the first to go is Fredo but just how soon before Stelter goes followed by Lemon and who knows who else. I wouldn't at all be surprised if Stelter is the next to head off to the unemployment office.
It could get bloody folks. Stay tuned.
Fredo is a scumbag raised by scumbags. He had no idea that stalking his scumbag brother's victims is wrong, because it's exactly the kind of thing that his scumbag father would have done.
-jcr
The CNN anchor had pressed sources for information on his brother’s accusers and reported back to the governor’s staff, and was active helping to craft their response to the charges, according to emails and a transcript of his testimony before investigators working for New York’s attorney general.
Cuomo had previously acknowledged talking to his brother and offering advice when the governor faced the harassment charges that led to his resignation. But the information released Nov. 29 revealed far more details about what he did.
https://worldabcnews.com/cnn-suspends-news-anchor-chris-cuomo-citing-proof-he-helped-his-politician-brother/
They pretty well kicked cumo just for being male. If you're male, think carefuly before joining the homophiliacrats. It not like there weren't perfectly good reasons to kick that slimeball out. In the end it's just because he wasn't a self hating male gender-masochist that they kicked him.
