Austria Orders the Unvaccinated Back Into Lockdown
Plus: Myanmar releases imprisoned U.S. journalist Danny Fenster, another budding San Francisco small business is strangled by red tape, and more...

Austria is ordering its unvaccinated population back into lockdown in an effort to "encourage" more people to get the jab. On Sunday, Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced that those who are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, but who haven't received it or haven't recently recovered from COVID-19, will have to stay in their homes unless engaged in essential business or travel, reports Politico.
That means unvaccinated people over the age of 12 will only be allowed to leave the house in order to do things like go to the grocery store or go on a walk, says the Los Angeles Times. Those with a negative COVID-19 test will be able to go to work as well, reports The Guardian.
The new policy affects roughly 2 million people out of the country's population of nearly 9 million. Some 63 percent of Austria's population is fully vaccinated, one of the lowest rates in Western Europe. The country reported 13,000 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend.
"We really didn't take this step lightly," the chancellor said in a radio interview announcing the policy. "My aim is very clearly to get the unvaccinated to get themselves vaccinated and not to lock down the vaccinated, in the long term, the way out of this vicious circle we are in—and it is a vicious circle, we are stumbling from wave to lockdown, and that can't carry on ad infinitum—is only vaccination."
Violators will be hit with fines of 500 euros ($572). Police will also be conducting random stops of citizens to enforce the new lockdown policy. Those who refuse to participate in these checks can be fined an additional 1,450 euros ($1,658), says the BBC.
"It can happen anytime and anywhere," said Interior Minister Karl Nehammer of the governing Austrian People's Party about the police checks, according to The Guardian. "Every citizen has to expect to be checked."
The lockdown is scheduled to last at least 10 days.
Protests erupted in the capital city of Vienna in response to the lockdown, and the right-wing Freedom Party has promised to challenge its legality.
Austria might not be the only country trying to lock down the unvaccinated. German politicians are also considering similar restrictions. This week, the left-wing Greens and Social Democrats alongside the classical liberal Free Democrats (the three political parties likely to form the country's next coalition government) proposed requiring unvaccinated people to show a negative COVID-19 test when traveling on public transportation.
Green co-chair Robert Habeck said the proposed restrictions amounted to a "lockdown for the unvaccinated," reports Politico. Berlin and other German state governments have gone further by limiting access to restaurants, theaters, and other public venues to the unvaccinated beginning this week.

An American journalist imprisoned by Myanmar's military government has been freed and is on his way home. Danny Fenster, managing editor of the online magazine Frontier Myanmar, was released from prison Monday and allowed to leave the country.
Fenster had been convicted on Friday of spreading false or inflammatory information, contacting illegal organizations, and violating visa regulations. He was sentenced to 11 years of hard labor, reported the Associated Press.
He was set to stand trial on a number of additional, more serious charges, including sedition, that could have seen him imprisoned for life. Former New Mexico governor and diplomat Bill Richardson traveled to Myanmar and helped secure the journalist's release.
Myanmar's military government has convicted at least seven journalists since it overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February.
The U.S. State Department criticized Fenster's imprisonment, as did the New York–based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
"We regret today's harsh ruling against journalist Danny Fenster, call for his immediate and unconditional release, and for all charges pending against him to be dropped," said Shawn Crispin, CPJ's senior Southeast Asia representative, in a statement. "Myanmar must stop jailing journalists for merely doing their jobs of reporting the news."

Another day, another small business crushed by San Francisco's oppressive permitting regime. Yoko and Clint Tan, the operators of a ramen noodle pop-up, have spent months and thousands of dollars trying to open a small, permanent restaurant space in the city's Inner Richmond neighborhood. As San Francisco Chronicle columnist Heather Knight reports, it was all for naught:
All the Tans wanted to do was take over a small restaurant space that was available and serve ramen to 10 guests per evening, three nights a week. They figured that turning one Japanese restaurant into another Japanese restaurant would be straightforward, but little about opening a business in San Francisco ever is.
Now they're $100,000 in the hole, far from opening and full of regrets.
While acknowledging they're like "deer in the headlights" when it comes to navigating the city's byzantine permitting process, they still wish they had more guidance. Or, perhaps, that they'd hired a professional permit expediter to get the job done for them.

Austria is ordering its unvaccinated population back into lockdown in an effort to "encourage" more people to get the jab.
This "you know who else" is just too on the nose.

I found this mandatory lockdown originally alarming, but since they are just trying to "encourage" vaccination, I feel way better. Obviously that means these are choices made using free will.
Lightly encouraged.
Cat-o-nine-tails or the rack? You get to chose.
Maybe sadomasochism explains all this lockdown shit.
The gentle touch of the invisible hand?
An invisible Hans.
There is only one, so it’s Han Solo.
Perhaps I could interest you in this new book?

It is a manual and cook book all in one.
This sounds great. Maybe I can "Nudge" more people into becoming libertarians.
Good luck with the pajama class (aka Democratic elites).
Fuck you. "You know who" never ordered anybody to get vaccinated, he only ordered them to take a shower.
You know who also had high speed rail. And infrastructure.
Allegedly. It was never proven.
Some people can just never give up on a failed idea.
What the hell does beetoven have to do with internment?
You know what other Austrian Chancellor...
Yeah, ok. You're right.
My buddy's sister makes $95/hr on the pc. She has been out of work for eight months but last month her pay check was $25450 merely working on the pc, pop over here..... http://Www.EarnCash1.com
The cops and the military are refusing to enforce the order...a good sign.
Austria might not be the only country trying to lock down the unvaccinated. German politicians are also considering similar restrictions.
Well, I guess we now know who else.
Who could not see this coming?
The problem is that it will embolden Team D to attempt to do the same.
Who does not see that coming?
Whooooosh
This is the wurst!
They are a bunch of brats.
Hot dog! That means “who else” is actually Matyas Rakosi! He of the infamous Salami Tactics
To be frank, for tourism this could be bad.
OMFG, Chumby. You're a godsdamned wizard with the one liners. Seriously, man, you're definitely one of the highlights of coming here. Most days, I could really use a good laugh, and a lot of the time, you can provide one.
Thank you for your service. 😀
Yes, totally agree.
I aim to please. Just ask all my ex wives. My fourth ex wife left me for my third ex wife. At least my fifth one left me for a man. The mailman. Something about him delivering better than I did.
They are literally stopping people on the street and asking for their papers. And their populace cheers it on.
This time it's for a noble purpose, though. To keep diseased individuals from polluting society.
Right. After all, just one drop of blood- er, phlegm- makes one unclean and spoils the man.
This way to the showers!
the unvaccinated are like a plague of rats which must be cleansed from society.. Am I doing it right?
Try badges and tattoos for the rats, and special arm bands for the righteous.
Hey, maybe a stiff arm salute and a snappy slogan.
Do it in German?
Impfstoff Macht Frei
"This time it's for a noble purpose, though. To keep diseased individuals from polluting society."
Facetiousness aside, ideas of impurity and disgust feature behind many of the very worst human evils.
Treatment of Untouchables in India, Serfs and then the Kulaks in Russia, the Burakumin in Japan, the Blacks during Segregation, Intellectuals during the Killing Fields, Wreckers by the Red Guards, and Jews and Gypsies during the Holocaust, was always motivated by ideas of physical or intellectual purity.
This aspect of the human psyche is so prevelant in psychological literature that it's basically a trope nowadays.
And this is exactly what is being irresponsibly pushed by governments and the media nowadays, and it's incredibly dangerous.
Perhaps humans are not worth saving.
Fuck that.
Leftists aren't people
You're reading ahead again, Skeptic.
That chapter isn't until next year.
And everyone wonders why Musk wants to go to Mars.
Also, no joking, if the vaccines are effective in preventing infection, why are the vaccinated so worried about those who choose otherwise?
And that is the tell.
Because fear is merely how they justify to themselves their desire for your submission
Because some people can’t get vaccinated. That’s a legit argument. But they don’t want to have the debate about whether it’s worth it to protect so few. Because in their minds there are no costs or risks to getting vaccinated.
There are pretty big protests in the capitol. So not everybody is cheering it on.
Insurrection!
They did last time, as well. So much for the theory that they'd learned anything.
"Well, I guess we now know who else."
Wait...I thought Classical Liberalism was nigh upon us in Germany? It was LITERALLY the libertarian moment!
https://reason.com/2021/09/23/could-classical-liberalism-win-big-in-germany/
To be fair, the article is about a fantasy scenario where a purportedly classical liberal party gets to make the next coalition. Skimming through Wikipedia, it seems that the coalition hasn't been decided on, but it's not looking good for a Classical Liberal Germany so far, despite that classical liberal party being almost guaranteed a seat at the table.
Classical Liberal Germany might be THE oxymoron of national politics.
It was an article based on the hopium that somehow the libertarian party in Germany would somehow get enough seats that they would be attractive to authoritarians in a coalition...when there are already three authoritarian parties who can form their coalition, absent a major blow out.
Again, from the little I've read, it seems that the German Libertarian party will be included in the authoritarian coalition. So much for that plan.
Sorry, you are right. I thought the coalition was being formed from three different crews- I didn't realize that the FDP was one of the groups.
This is worse than what I thought. The "classical liberals" are actually joining up with vax mandates. That is terrible.
Only real libertarians support mandates. Just ask Mike.
"This week, the left-wing Greens and Social Democrats alongside the classical liberal Free Democrats (the three political parties likely to form the country's next coalition government) proposed requiring unvaccinated people to show a negative COVID-19 test when traveling on public transportation."
The libertarian moment is here in Germany. It just looks like it is a libertarian moment that includes controlling other people.
Bold fail. That was only supposed to bold "classical liberal Free Democrats"
Let me try: classical liberal Free Democrats.
It's this you need to put around the text
Watch that last closing bitm It's a loo-loo.
Thanks for the encouragement. I hqven't done manual HTML in years.
Austria isn't part of Germany anymore.
Nevermind, I see the Germans are going there too. Yay.

That will solve the supply chain problems! Less people!
SUPPLY CHAIN PROBLEMS IS WHITE SUPREMACY!

INTERSECTIONALITY, IT'S ALL OF THEM!
We needs more trans ports.
Fuck Noam Chomsky.

squish squish squish
The U.S. State Department criticized Fenster's imprisonment...
We found other ways to make journalists fall into line without such barbaric methods.
You mean drone strikes?
Or perhaps you're referencing the FBI raid on an investigative journalism outlet last week?
Farmed it out to the Saudis, if we had to...
> Former New Mexico governor and diplomat Bill Richardson traveled to Myanmar and helped secure the journalist's release.
They let him go just to get Richardson out of their country.
The lockdown is scheduled to last at least 10 days.
This seems familiar somehow.
One more kick at the football!
Just still Easter.
Does the 10 days start after our two weeks are eventually over?
Only ten days to flatten the curve.
Or, perhaps, that they'd hired a professional permit expediter to get the job done for them.
That one hundred grand would have one into the right pockets.
Gotta “know a guy”.
You must ask a favor of Sharky Laguana. He runs the commission that gets these kind of things done.
Well, he only bags for Curran:
"SF Building Inspector Under Fire For Secretive $180,000 Loan from Developer He was Inspecting"https://sfist.com/2021/06/08/dbi-inspector-under-fire-for-secretive-180-000-loan-from-developer-he-was-inspecting/
“Loan”
It probably would have been $40K instead of $100K going into the right pockets, but at least the ramen shop would have saved some bucks.
These people clearly haven't watched "The Wire". Stringer Bell was a petty crook compared to the REAL criminals in Baltimore.
". Or, perhaps, that they'd hired a professional permit expediter to get the job done for them."
JOBS!
Who said jobs have to add actual value to be considered valuable?
I've noticed something strange. Rental prices for SF houses (not apartments) has been dropping. I am starting to think the upper middle class is leaving some vacancies behind them. Prices still too high for the poor, who face a massive housing shortage, and the rich don't care. But those who aren't leaving the state and migrating out of the crazy cities and past the suburbs.
That was going to be my plan for retirement. Might have to keep going until I hid Democrat controlled Nevada.
Stay the fuck out of Idaho. We've absorbed enough Californians in the last two years.
Keep your ugly fuckin' goldbrickin' ass out of my potato community.
Moving more public hearings online was supposed to make them more accessible and democratic. But they're still dominated by the same unrepresentative loudmouths...
Unrepresentative loudmouths? Online?
WHAT?
I can report it’s the same for online HOA meetings.
I bet the people in Dee’s HOA don’t like her either.
Wonder how many the asshole has 'muted'.
You attend those things?
I try to avoid listening to NIMBYs discuss how they want me to use my property.
If you haven't noticed already, Mike is really big on telling others what to do. Basically a HOA incarnate.
Notice he's whining about Republican residents in the HOA "telling people what to do"--but he's the silly bitch who bought his home in an HOA to begin with.
See what I mean about White Mike being a masochist? For all his mewling about "conservative victim narratives," the simp absolutely marinates in how the big, bad conservatives are so mean to him.
So, not a Democrat?
I can assure you I currently live in an HOA neighborhood where the Republicans outnumber the Democrats, and there are Republicans who are very much into telling their neighbors what to do, reporting them for violations, etc.
And on the web, no one can tell you're a dog, lying piece of lefty shit.
You have an old fiero up on blocks don’t you?
Occasionally.
A couple decades ago I lived in a condo “complex” that had only eight units.
Never do that. Bad idea. I ended up serving as Treasurer and Vice President. It was unbelievable how much drama an eight-unit complex could generate.
Lots of drama when it went broke , I’m sure.
I did realize while living there that every condo complex is going to reach an end-of-life stage where it’s better to sell the whole complex off, let someone tear it all down and rebuild.
But I’ve never heard of a condo complex that has an end-of-life plan.
Whoosh!
I was treasurer and VP and *still* haven't heard of a complex HOA with an EOL plan.
Sigh! It went broke because he was the treasurer, get it?
That's what I'm saying.
"Every HOA I've ever seen has been terribly managed. Including the one I managed."
Oh, you were insulting me. OK, fuck off --- I'll put you back on mute.
Oh no, he will never recover!
Just practice for the move up on the real mute list.
Lol.
Nothing will ever replace Michael Hihn’s Enemies List though. Heck, it even had its own separate webpage!
Haha!
The beast ice mute classic is in full swing.
Good luck fellas
Winner gets two cases of Beast Ice along with three days (and two nights) at a $500,000 house.
There was one family that bought a unit for their grandmother, who only spoke Chinese. And she kept burning food in her kitchen and setting off the complex-wide smoke alarm.
There was another unit running a daycare, and their neighbor was pissed about the surge of parents parking to drop off and pick up their kids.
And there was an upstairs neighbor who overwatered their plants on their balcony, causing water to drip down and “ruin” the downstairs neighbor’s deck.
Pretty much everyone not involved in those three dramas served on the board.
Condexes are even worse. Buying into a Condex is insane.
Condo complex associations are the worst.
Condos have accounted for only about 5% of my rental portfolio but about 80% of my pain in that portfolio. So many complaints against me and my tenants. Accusations of prostitution, backing into a parking space and only allowing 30+ day rentals (which they tracked like it was their only job) among many others. Good riddance to those properties.
I hear ya.
Ok, so seriously, what's wrong with backing into a parking spot?
Ever been stuck sitting in a parking lot waiting for someone to back their Suburban or F250 into a spot? When it's much easier for most people to back out of a spot than to back in? What are you up to that you need to make such a quick getaway? "Backers" drive me crazy.
It's possible that I've got a skewed perception here since I spend a lot of time in parking lots waiting for people to back 75 foot long tractor trailers into parking spots. And those bend in the middle. And I'm often looking at a clock that will tattle on me if I exceed it.
So that doesn't actually sound all that bad.
It’s not allowed. That’s what’s wrong.
In a lot of ways, they've actually made these local leaders less accountable because the leaders have more control over the public engagement mechanism. I'm sure that a lot of these left-captured school boards regretted going back to in-person meetings.
Sharky Laguana, president of the small business commission
Sharky Laguana? President of the Small Business Commission? The government of San Francisco and the mafia are becoming indistinguishable.
Is he a loan sharky?
Nothing Mafia ends in a "-y" or an "-ie."
Don't insult the mafia like that.
The Mafia won't break your kneecaps if you pay them. The city government, on the other hand...
When you pay the mafia protection money you can be certain that no one will rob your store. You pay the Gov protection money and they tell people to rob your store
^
It's robbery all the way down.
You'll notice you'll never hear about this sort of thing anywhere the populace is armed.
The first pin-stripped suit that says: "Nice business you have here..." would get a reply of a pointed 12 Gauge and the owner saying: "Yeah! And nothing 'bad' is gonna happen to it either!"
And sometimes they let people burn the whole thing down.
No one burns anything down. They express their righteous anger by dispropriating the ownership class of their means of oppression. And by chasing a frightened teenager running away from them.
Sorry, how white supremacist of me.
You're clearly an anti-arson fascist.
The military did everything it could to conceal the civilian death tolls...
No one said we wouldn't get our hair mussed.
"The military did everything it could to conceal the civilian death tolls..."
But because 2019 was during the dark ages of Orange Tyranny, the New York Times is on the case. They will leave no rock uncovered, so long as it was placed after Jan 20 2017 and before Jan 20 2020.
Trump ended an Obama policy of reporting civilian deaths from drone strikes, so no surprise for those of us paying attention.
"President Donald Trump has revoked a policy set by his predecessor requiring US intelligence officials to publish the number of civilians killed in drone strikes outside of war zones..."
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-47480207
Details of this incident:
"In the last days of the battle against the Islamic State in Syria, when members of the once-fierce caliphate were cornered in a dirt field next to a town called Baghuz, a U.S. military drone circled high overhead, hunting for military targets. But it saw only a large crowd of women and children huddled against a river bank.
Without warning, an American F-15E attack jet streaked across the drone’s high-definition field of vision and dropped a 500-pound bomb on the crowd, swallowing it in a shuddering blast. As the smoke cleared, a few people stumbled away in search of cover. Then a jet tracking them dropped one 2,000-pound bomb, then another, killing most of the survivors.
It was March 18, 2019. At the U.S. military’s busy Combined Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, uniformed personnel watching the live drone footage looked on in stunned disbelief, according to one officer who was there.
“Who dropped that?” a confused analyst typed on a secure chat system being used by those monitoring the drone, two people who reviewed the chat log recalled. Another responded, “We just dropped on 50 women and children.”
An initial battle damage assessment quickly found that the number of dead was actually about 70.
The Baghuz strike was one of the largest civilian casualty incidents of the war against the Islamic State, but it has never been publicly acknowledged by the U.S. military. The details, reported here for the first time, show that the death toll was almost immediately apparent to military officials. A legal officer flagged the strike as a possible war crime that required an investigation. But at nearly every step, the military made moves that concealed the catastrophic strike. The death toll was downplayed. Reports were delayed, sanitized and classified. United States-led coalition forces bulldozed the blast site. And top leaders were not notified..."
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/13/us/us-airstrikes-civilian-deaths.html
So Biden put that metric right back in right?
Also, are you ignoring how quickly the IC/Military declared the Afghanistan aid worker a military combatant? Numbers don't mean anything when they willingly misclassify.
Asshole Joe doesn't care about facts.
Why do you always have to ruin the fifty-center's narrative, you bully? He was just waiting to post that too. He had a big quote and everything.
Also, how the hell did the shillbot get two different links in one post?
Mother apparently doesn't know how to use the Google machine. Try it out sometime. Actually looking things up before posting will save you from saying dumb s..t all the time and playing the fool.
Your wife will thank you too.
Take your own advice, asshole; quit posting dumb shit.
What does looking anything up have to do with my comment, retard.
Admit it, you're just posting retorts without actually thinking about what you're saying.
Joe Fucksmear got lucky on the links?
I don't know Jesse, but he's been kinda' busy. We know what Obama and Trump did.
Busy with his record number of trips to his beach house?
https://thefederalist.com/2021/10/07/is-joe-biden-flying-to-wilmington-nearly-every-weekend-to-dodge-visitor-logs/
What has he accomplished with all of his busy work? He calls a lid early afternoon most days.
What has he accomplisehd?
Got vaccines out quickly and until Delta variant met the know-nothing, no-vaxx movement piling up bodies in resistance, had already with CDC repealed masking recommendation for the vaccinated when outside or in company of known.
Got us out of Afghanistan finally without having to bring Taliban to Camp David like Trump wanted, evacuating 120k in 1 week.
Record economic rebound and new jobs (points to scoreboard).
Passed infrastructure bill neither Trump or Obama could get done.
Rejoined the Paris Climate Accord and helped take the next step just last week.
Working on restarting the Iran nuclear deal. Since Trump ended it - what a f..king dunce - Iran has gone from compliance according to US and Israeli military intelligence and the on site IAEA, to adding nuclear material and getting closer to a nuclear weapon.
Here's the best one - we can go for a week or two without thinking about him, though you BDS sufferers surely can't. Seek relief. He doesn't demand constant attention like the previous occupant.
Got vaccines out quickly and until Delta variant met the know-nothing, no-vaxx movement piling up bodies in resistance
The therapeutics were already being distributed before he got in to office, and Delta infects both.
Got us out of Afghanistan finally without having to bring Taliban to Camp David like Trump wanted, evacuating 120k in 1 week.
Trump already had us on a timeline that he busted for his stupid 9/11 withdrawal photo op, only to have the Taliban laugh his plans into oblivion.
Record economic rebound and new jobs (points to scoreboard).
(Points to employment-to-population ratio)
Passed infrastructure bill neither Trump or Obama could get done.
At terms far less than he wanted.
Rejoined the Paris Climate Accord and helped take the next step just last week.
Which is a resume-fluffer, not an accomplishment.
Here's the best one - we can go for a week or two without thinking about him, though you BDS sufferers surely can't.
LOL, you silly bitches can't even hear "Let's Go Brandon" without getting your panties in a twist.
I notice you left out inflation, immigration, and his tanking poll numbers, but that's understandable.
Also the 120k evacuated were evacuated by not the us
Say what?
Fuck Joe Friday.
Red Rock:
Regeneron costs $2100 a dose, the vaccines about $21.
So, Biden is at fault for not following the timeline of the guy who lacked the balls to do anything but talk about Afghanistan but held his negotiations with the Taliban without Afghani Government involvement and wanted to bring them to Camp David? Really?
Record jobs and economic rebound (points to scoreboard).
Getting less than you wanted but getting something is called negotiating and compromising. Trump got nothing after promising infrastructure for 4 years and even having a $2 trillion plan from Pelosi to work with. F..koing guy is a loud mouth eunuch.
Like I said, seek help for you BDS.
Inflation is largely caused by factors at play from before Biden took office, including oil prices.
I prefer votes to polls though Trump lost both.
Regeneron costs $2100 a dose, the vaccines about $21.
The "vaccines" crap out after 6-8 months, which makes them therapeutics.
So, Biden is at fault for not following the timeline of the guy who lacked the balls to do anything but talk about Afghanistan but held his negotiations with the Taliban without Afghani Government involvement and wanted to bring them to Camp David? Really?
Yeah, Biden's at fault for trying to turn a military withdrawal in to a PR photo op and then fucking up the withdrawal.
Record jobs and economic rebound (points to scoreboard).
Employment to population ratio (points to scoreboard).
Getting less than you wanted but getting something is called negotiating and compromising.
It's called getting kicked in the ass by reality.
Like I said, seek help for you BDS.
Like I said, learn to take a joke, shitlib.
Inflation is largely caused by factors at play from before Biden took office, including oil prices.
And they haven't improved since he's been in office.
I prefer votes to polls though Trump lost both.
Funny how that happens when your guy is in the toilet.
Regeneron costs $2100 a dose, the vaccines about $21.
Covid IFR is under 0.5% for those under 70. So multiply that 21 dollars for the millions who don't need it and what do you get?
Record jobs and economic rebound (points to scoreboard).
The nov/dec numbers from last year were better. And the recovery is because your side shut down cities and states last year. You are crowing about a partial recovery on what you destroyed!
Hey, yes the building is destroyed, but I finished rebuilding the guest room! You really are dumb Joe.
without Afghani Government involvement
What Afghani Government?
He extended the Afghanistan withdrawal deadline so he could have a presser on Sept 11 to stroke his ego. He then ignored his own intelligence when it was clear things were going sideways and did jack squat until Saigon part 2 photos appeared. He abandoned Bagram, the best location for an evacuation, by literally leaving in the middle of the night. Not telling anyone. This left 5,000 ISIS and other dangerous detainees to go free. One of whom was reported to be the suicide bomber at HKIA. The one that killed dozens including US servicemen. Recall when their remains were returned to the US? Botcher Joe kept checking his watch. Biden then followed that up with not ordering the destruction of US equipment there until the last day. He managed to drone strike murder an aid worker and some children at the time too. With humility. And as we left, Biden gave the Taliban the info for all the Americans he left behind. Leaving Afghanistan was not going to be a feel good moment but Biden’s failure to plan and desire for a photo op moment made it worse.
Chumby:
""Retaining Bagram would have required putting as many as 5,000 U.S. troops in harm's way just to operate and defend," Austin said. "Staying at Bagram, even for counterterrorism purposes, meant staying at war in Afghanistan — something that the president made clear that he would not do."
In his testimony Tuesday, the secretary also noted that keeping the air base would’ve “contributed little to the mission that we’d been assigned, and that was to protect and defend the embassy.” Similarly, Milley explained that Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul was "going to be the center of gravity" for any noncombatant evacuation operation, not Bagram...."

Inept followers following an inept leader.
Two runways not in the middle of the country’s population center versus one runway in Kabul. Which would have been better? Hmmmm.
They had no mission to address evacuating the Americans months before the original May deadline? Or even after until Kabul was surrounded by the Taliban? I am not surprised because that is exactly how it looked.
“We still should have thrown the ball against the Pats instead of running Beast Mode.” - so no Seahawks fan
Chumby, I'll bet you're a terror on the Risk board.
Bet you usually place top three when you play tic-tac-toe.
Chumby, I'll bet you're a terror on the Risk board.
That was almost as funny as watching your boy get made in to the Taliban's bitch this September.
Notice that Joe cannot respond to the administration letting a guy out of jail, who then suicide bombed americans a few days later. H cannot respond to the fact that Biden then bombed a US Aid worker, claiming that he had avenged the deaths of these US Servicemen that he couldn't be bothered to show proper sympathy for.
That is Joe for you...Pick one little thing and argue it, without realizing that everyone sees how you cannot argue the other damning points.
You might notice Overt, I didn't claim Trump personally killed 70 women and children in Syria, only that he had removed an Obama requirement to report drone collateral damage and provided the BBC link proving that. Therefore no surprise this event was not brought out until now. You and others here want to pretend Biden was steering the drone in Kabul, which of course is ridiculous. Grow up.
Biden is the Commander in Chief and said, “The buck stops here.” He also delayed the evacuation turning it into a botched abandonment. His position says he is responsible. He said he is responsible. And his previous fuck-up facilitated it.
Well Chumby, you have offered nothing to show the delay had anything to do with the schedule - gee, maybe the Taliban was mad they didn't get the Camp David meeting, and of course Trump has never taken responsibility for anything in his life, while bragging he did things he didn't, or that others had done. Is that the kind of leader you like?
Taking responsibility does not mean Biden targeted the drone, much as you claim he did.
contributed little to the mission that we’d been assigned
Pause on that, and contemplate it.
"I didn't claim Trump personally killed 70 women and children in Syria...You and others here want to pretend Biden was steering the drone in Kabul, which of course is ridiculous."
Here is another tactic of Joe's. Just a few messages above, he celebrated all of "Biden's Accomplishments" including rolling out Vaccines that were developed under Orange man, and pulling out of Afghanistan.
For some reason these "successful accomplishments" are Biden's. When people point out that Afghanistan was not, you know, anything a majority would call successful, now it isn't Biden's fault because he wasn't flying the drones.
Like within 3 posts, Joe has already forgotten that Biden is supposed to get credit for the actions of his administration, and he now argues that it is wrong to hold him accountable for the actions of his administration.
"Grow up."
Your projection is showing again, Joe.
"Well Chumby, you have offered nothing to show the delay had anything to do with the schedule"
This has been shown over and again, but because Joe doesn't *actually* read the comments he is responding to, he looks foolish demanding that people state what they've already stated.
But let's give Joe a bone here, for the benefit of the thread: If the US had stuck to its original evacuation plans, we'd have been out of there before the 2021 Fighting Season began. And we'd have been evacuating Americans while the taliban was still huddling around stoves in their caves.
Well Joe, you have offered nothing to indicate the delay was inevitable regardless of the schedule.
In late August, Biden and Co. were still claiming everything was fine. It wasn’t. The WH press corps even asked about this and, with humility, he talked down to him. POTUS was not putting on a full court press to get Americans out then. Nor was he prior to this.
You’re going to have to provide a wealth of evidence to indicate that from Jan 6 through August, there were no means to evacuate Americans (and friendly Afghanis) from there but the resources and logistics somehow became available once the Taliban had surrounded Kabul.
Are you suggesting events were due to the Taliban not getting a Camp David invite?
Biden said he takes responsibility but now he shouldn’t. He was in charge but you say he wasn’t. His botchery beforehand facilitated the murders but you say that he should get a pass.
Invoking Trump is chaff and redirect. Both sides whatboutism. It didn’t happen while Trump was POTUS and Trump didn’t claim responsibility for it like Biden did.
“If the US had stuck to its original evacuation plans, we'd have been out of there before the 2021 Fighting Season began.”
If Joe actually read all of your comment, this will be the first he heard about this “fighting season”, and has no idea what the fuck it means.
“Rejoined the Paris Climate Accord and helped take the next step just last week.”
Unconstitutional non-treaties aren’t really accomplishments to those of us that actually care about the constitution.
R mac, yes they are and have the full effect of law. Yes, they can be reversed with a new administration.
By the way, if you are care about the Constitution you must have been really concerned Trump's end run around the border wall funding he promised the Mexicans would pay for, his ignoring Congressional subpoenas, his use of presidential power and congressionally appropriated funds directly in the aid of his political campaign - see Ukraine - and his attempted coup on Jan 6th - right?
Wait, you think the President can enter into a treaty without it being ratified by the Senate?
Yes. But it depends on which President.
Desig, they are called agreements and yes, it's been done repeatedly by presidents of both parties.
For example, in 1989, the United States was a party to 890 treaties and 5,117 executive agreements.
Joe, your understanding of government is infantile. It isn't ratified. It is not backed by law. You're ignorant.
Jesse, we have executive agreements with foreign countries all the time which have the force of law and all modern presidents have been part of them.
Overt, I didn't claim Trump personally killed 70 womend and children in Syria, only that he had removed an Obama requirement to report drone collateral damage. Therefore no surprise this event was not brought out until now. You and others here want to pretend Biden was steering the drone in Kabul, which of course is ridiculous. Grow up.
Executive agreements not ratified are not law dummy.
Jesse:
"Despite questions about the constitutionality of executive agreements, in 1937 the Supreme Court ruled that they had the same force as treaties. Because executive agreements are made on the authority of the incumbent president, they do not necessarily bind his successors."
Encyclopedia Brittanica
You should maybe look things up before posting. It keeps you from looking so foolish.
Because executive agreements are made on the authority of the incumbent president, they do not necessarily bind his successors.
So . . . they don't carry the force of law.
You are overworking for .50/hr. But still not worth .50/hr.
Square, they do have the authority of law. A successor would have to actively withdraw, as Trump foolishly did from both the Paris Agreement and the Iran Nuclear Agreement. Trolling Obama - kind of his personal version of "owning the libs" which is of course the only principle left that the GOP believes in - was more important to Trump than the fact that since then we have lost 4 years of an already short period to reduce CO2 omissions and watched Iran, previously compliant with the nuclear agreement according to Israeli and US intelligence as well as the IAEA inspectors, gain more nuclear materials and grow ever closer to a nuclear weapon.
A successor would have to actively withdraw
And there would be no reason that the successor couldn't, as it wouldn't be a matter of law.
"BDS sufferers "
Biden Derangement Syndrome?
I mean... just you first clause:
Got vaccines out quickly
Literally the same rate as when he came into office. It never increased.
evacuating 120k in 1 week.
Why are you giving him credit for other country's evacuations? Are you this partisan and this dumb?
Rejoined the Paris Climate Accord
The accord that gave china all they wanted, hampers US supply, and not ratified by Congress? You have weird definitions of accomplishments.
Won't even bother with your idiotic crowing about 1.7T more in spending.
Why did you skip more Covid deaths than under Trump? Great accomplishment there. Why not inflation? Why not continued 10 year labor participation rates?
Jesse, any agreement with over 200 other countries will have something to bitch about - it's that compromise thing again which is the only way you get anything done without force. The US was with China and Russia in not signing the agreement on coal reductions and of course India was primarily responsible for extending the coal timeline. However, 40 countries agreed to cut investments in coal technology and aim to end it soon. Agreements on deforestation (signed by Amazon home Brazil) and methane production are also helpful. As noted by Obama, moving the ball forward should be and is the only the realistic goal. 200 nations are in this - that is reason enough for guarded optimism compared to the know nothing, no future platform Trump pushed.
Infrastructure was a goal sought by Obama and Trump which Biden accomplished. Caw! caw!
Funny stuff on Covid deaths. Yes indeed, counting the red state surge we just witnessed and GOP digging in their heels to further politicize a world health crisis. If the GOP didn't have the culture wars, they'd have no platform at all. In fact THE GOP HAD NO PLATFORM AT ALL in 2020 - literraly. Trump you know.
Obama bought a near sea level mansion. He’s clearly not worried about CAGW and SLR.
When the folks squawking about this are not acting like it is occurring, it calls into question their honesty. Such as bringing an entourage to the United Kingdom on carbon belching jets when the entire gals could have been done via Zoom.
If the GOP didn't have the culture wars, they'd have no platform at all.
This statement is eloquent proof of why the culture wars should remain front and center.
It's not the GOP, after all, who's calling pedophiles "minor-attracted persons." Sic semper Rosenbaumae.
Why do you keep saying a non ratified agreement that is non binding means something?
That shows your desperation.
Indeed Chumby, don't know why Kerry and Obama didn't go by Kayak (dude, you want your leaders to efficient and productive more than consistent, or Churchill should have been rowing out to save troops at Dunkirk.
Red Rocks, thanks for confirming the GOP has no plan for the future as was clear by their failure to produce a platform in 2020 and their failure now to come up with anything other than scaring snowflakes like you and most here with horror stories.
Jesse, try Google next time:
"Despite questions about the constitutionality of executive agreements, in 1937 the Supreme Court ruled that they had the same force as treaties. Because executive agreements are made on the authority of the incumbent president, they do not necessarily bind his successors." NAFTA was an example.
However, 40 countries that don't depend on coal agreed to cut investments in coal technology and aim to end it soon.
Meanwhile, remind me what happened with China and India?
Jesus Joe. I stated they could have used Zoom. Or perhaps not attend at all given that it was a social event for virtue signaling.
Churchill would not have impacted the rescue of the BEF had he been onsite. If carbon pollution is contributing to CAGW/CC/SLR, then I expect folks drinking that Kool Aid to eliminate their net carbon pollution and not increase it in the name of reducing it.
And given the Venn diagram overlap of the Church of Climate Scientology with the Church of Disease Scientology, is it a good idea for peoples around the globe meeting together? Makes me think they don’t give a shit about that either. Especially someone elderly and frail like President Biden. Maybe shitting his pants in front of the Pope was on his bucket list. “Poped my pants - check.”
Square, China and India (#1 and #3 respectfully in total emissions with us at #2. We are #1 in per capita emissions and of course with the rest of the west responsible for the majority of already banked CO2) restated their commitments to the Paris accord including new plans to facilitate those goals, but India sought an extension of coal use and China offered little concrete. There are 200 countries in the agreement and your desire to make this a competition with the 2 most populous countries would guarantee short sighted failure dealing with a problem which will not respect borders. To quote Obama again, moving the ball forward should and is the only realistic goal. All countries realize the danger to themselves with this problem and inaction is not an option.
Red Rocks, thanks for confirming the GOP has no plan for the future as was clear by their failure to produce a platform in 2020 and their failure now to come up with anything other than scaring snowflakes like you and most here with horror stories.
LOL at Joey-poo going back to the "this is just a pointless culture war issue!" talking point. Meanwhile, his allies are freaking the fuck out that the GOP might actually be able to leverage that anger into political action.
I didn't say it wasn't effective Red Rocks - look at the intended audience - but mindless and unprincipled. Freedom to not be vaccinated? You gonna' take that down to those for getting into grade school? That's the logical conclusion. How about CRT, which isn't actually being taught anywhere besides maybe Berkely High School? Illegal immigrants are going to kill you - they have lower criminal behavior rates than native born Americans and besides, Mexicans are this generation Italians. Pretty soon we'll all think they're white too. Afghanistan is fading, Infrastructure is passed and federal projects will start coming on-line, working class people in WV and elsewhere will start to catch on they will benefit from the BBB programs, and inflation is expected to cool in 2022 to between 2.2 to 2.6%.
Well see, wont we.
We are #1 in per capita emissions
We're also #1 in reducing emissions despite ignoring Paris (which everyone else did, too).
Your 40-country agreement reminds me very much of Bush's 'coalition of the willing,' which contained quite a few countries that don't even have armies.
Face it Joe, Greta is right - COP26 didn't accomplish jack shit.
Square:
"In Obama’s eight years as president, CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels and cement production fell by 11%. The amount of coal used for primary energy production decreased by 38% while renewable generation went up by 44%.
In Trump’s three years in power to 2019, this trend continued but slowed down. CO2 emissions fell by just 0.5%. Coal use for primary energy production went down 3%, despite the president’s talk of reviving the industry, while renewables rose 11%.
Historically, the US is responsible for more CO2 emissions than any other country, having been the largest emitter between the mid-19th century and 2005, when it was overtaken by China. We have emitted more than twice the CO2 China has.
PS Square, we all had big dreams as teenagers but as we age our dreams hopefully become more realizable. I'm not a fan of listening much to teenagers except maybe as narrators of their own experiences.
So you agree that we're #1 in reducing emissions despite ignoring Paris, that neither Obama nor Trump had anything to do with that, and that China, the biggest polluter, isn't going to go off of coal as a result of COP26, nor is India.
Square, why would I agree Obama and Trump had nothing to do with it when the differences between them was so stark? Did you read any of this? Yes, we are #1 in reductions but still emit twice per capita what China does and are the biggest historical emitters of all time. That means more than it seems, because that CO2 from the industrial revolution is banked and part of the total.
I didn't say it wasn't effective Red Rocks - look at the intended audience - but mindless and unprincipled.
Woof, the copium inhalation here is off the charts.
This is how shitlibs react when conservatives invade their turf.
That’s funny cause I remember an article from 2015 or 2016 complaining about Obama’s lack of transparency in regards to civilian deaths by drone strike.
Indeed Desig, and the administration reacted with the policy noted above by the BBC.
So weird how this was the NYTs take while Obama was in office.
https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2016/01/12/reflecting-on-obamas-presidency/obamas-embrace-of-drone-strikes-will-be-a-lasting-legacy?nytmobile=0%3F
Yet you crow about something done as he was exiting office?
Jesse, drones are without doubt less likely to produce as much collateral damage as bombs and assaults, so yes, embracing them as effective weapons is consistent with respect for protecting innocent lives and nothing in your article counters that fact. They don't mean there is no collateral damage unfortunately.
You seem to be walking back your argument lol.
Maybe you can say how then. I have been consistent in everything I've said on this topic.
Jen Psaki level spin.
"Trump ended an Obama policy of reporting civilian deaths from drone strikes, so no surprise for those of us paying attention."
Yes, because the Media suddenly gave a shit about civilian deaths when President Murder Drone left office in 2017. Obama's persecution of islamic wedding parties was only matched by his cynical disregard for the protestations of freedom among those same brown people. His foreign policy in the Middle East and North Africa was actually worse than Bush's and that is such a low bar that it isn't even funny.
The only thing more disappointing than Obama's desire to "fix" problems with missiles, is the Media's sudden silence when it comes to Biden's continuing of the policy.
Overt, you have no idea what you are talking about do you? Obama removed all but a very small force from Iraq - as promised - and is generally criticized for standing up for the freedom of Syrians against Bashir Al-assad and for the freedom of Libyans who started a non-fundamentalist revolution and were being murdered by Qadafi. Obama said at one point his biggest regret was not sticking with Libyan aid after the revolution won (and which by the way featured parades in the streets with American flags, something promised by your guy Bush in Bahgdad which never happened.
"Overt, you have no idea what you are talking about do you? "
Here is Joe going to an insult because he is frustrated that he cannot bait me into defending Orange Man.
"Obama removed all but a very small force from Iraq - as promised - and is generally criticized for standing up for the freedom of Syrians against Bashir Al-assad and for the freedom of Libyans who started a non-fundamentalist revolution and were being murdered by Qadafi. "
Here is Joe changing the subject. He knows that Obama's record on Drone strikes, and ACTUAL RESULTS in the ME was so bad that he has to try and change the metrics to who Obama "stood up to". The results are in fact, the creation of ISIS, the fracturing of Syria and displacement of millions of Syrians. The death of the Green Revolution in Iran. Libya now has a burgeoning slave trade. Not only did Obama fail to stay out of wars as he admonished the previous administration, he bombed these countries into instability like a coward, and looked the other way while they descended into chaos.
"something promised by your guy Bush in Bahgdad which never happened."
And here is Joe proving that he doesn't even read my arguments. If he did, he would see that Bush isn't "my guy". From the previous post: "[Obama's] foreign policy in the Middle East and North Africa was actually worse than Bush's and that is such a low bar that it isn't even funny."
Bush fucked up two countries. Obama fucked up at least 3 (Syria, Libya, made Iraq worse. Backing the Maidan overthrow in Ukraine. Began the massive bombing campaign in Yemen. Failed in Afghanistan. Began a massive bombing campaign in Somalia. Sold out the people of Iran.) And most importantly: Obama ran as an intervention skeptic, Bush was an unabashed interventionist after 2001. Bush was terrible, Obama was even more interventionist and lied about it.
Overt, Obama did not f...up Syria and Libya which were both independently begun revolutions which he/we tried to intervene in defense of human rights. Syria was too murky to be successful in and our action there was very limited, while in Libya there was a legitimate revolutionary movement in favor of democracy, not Jihad (that distinction was not present in Syria opposition). As I previously noted, when Qadafi's troops folded there were parades in the streets with American flags and a democratically elected government took over. Unfortunately, tribal groups waited and began rear guard fighting that is still not over and as Obama has admitted, he should have lent more support to the democratic revolution. Libya is still not lost, though it is a mess. BUT OBAMA DID NOT START the revolution there or in Syria.
Iraq had to sort out it's own sectarian problems and largely has, but unless you think we should have maintained large troop numbers there, what are you recommending. Iran was not going to be toppled with American help. Speak clearly what you think was needed there? You think the Green Revolution wanted open US backing? You think only the fundamentalists viewed us as enemies?
As to Afghanistan, Obama should have listened to Biden who argued against his surge in 2009/2010. He listened instead to the military brass which is the single source of the BS that has kept us there for 20 years by pumping sunshine. They were still at it as Joe pulled the plug for good.
Overt, Obama did not f...up Syria and Libya which were both independently begun revolutions which he/we tried to intervene in defense of human rights.
Oh, bullshit. Both were fomented by the CIA and the State Department as part of the Arab Spring color revolution operations across the region, and his administration's actions directly resulted in Libya becoming a failed state and the rise of ISIS in the MERV.
Libya is still not lost, though it is a mess.
Woof, the levels of delusion here are off the charts. Libya has real, actual slave markets operating, and this senile fossil is arguing that it's "not lost."
As to Afghanistan, Obama should have listened to Biden who argued against his surge in 2009/2010. He listened instead to the military brass which is the single source of the BS that has kept us there for 20 years by pumping sunshine. They were still at it as Joe pulled the plug for good.
Huh, good thing his predecessor set the table for that and had already drawn troop levels down to 2,500 when he took office.
Red Rock, i get your conspiracy think, or you wouldn't be on this site, but the Libyan revolution and the Syrian revolutions were - unlike the Iraq war - not fomented by the US. There is still a national government recognized by the UN and and supported by the west and elections are to be held in December, again with the support of the world's major powers. I'm sure your wishing for failure and you may get it, but unlike Iraq, there was a movement for democracy against Qadafi, and he was about to unleash his full military force on that movement in a predicted bloodbath. We acted on a UN resolution approving stopping him and we did. Other countries provided air power. We lost no troops and spent about a billion. Want to compare that to Iraq?
Bush abandoned Afghanistan in 2004 when he went into Iraq and even said he didn't care about getting Bin Laden, so you're right about that.
Red Rock, i get your conspiracy think, or you wouldn't be on this site, but the Libyan revolution and the Syrian revolutions were - unlike the Iraq war - not fomented by the US.
Yeah, they were.
There is still a national government recognized by the UN
Whose actual authority amounts to fuck-all.
unlike Iraq, there was a movement for democracy against Qadafi, and he was about to unleash his full military force on that movement in a predicted bloodbath.
Funny how we had to provide top cover to prevent that "bloodbath" all the way in to Tripoli.
And fuckin' LOL that you can't even defend Syria and deflect all the way back to Bush. Pathetic.
Hey now, cut Joe some slack. His whore mother's specialty was getting fistfucked, so Joe got punched in the head a *lot* while he was still in the womb. And given the number of times she dropped him on his head in a drunken stupor as an infant, it's no wonder he's brain damaged.
"Syria and Libya which were both independently begun revolutions which he/we tried to intervene in defense of human rights. "
Syria and Libya have had "independently begun revolutions" since their respective dictators came into power. And they have tended to deal with them the same way Iran dealt with it- some balance of police-state crack downs, tyranny and repression. But unlike Iran where Obama couldn't even mouth support for the Green Revolution, Obama bombed Libya and Syria's abilities to maintain order (their military assets). And shocker, without the ability to maintain police state tyrannies, these countries became failed states full of EVEN WORSE human rights abuses than what you claim Obama hoped to defend. That is what happens when you bomb countries while declining to put boots on the ground- you have to hire all the people to do the "maintaining order" in your name. And those people tend to be the only folks that flourish in police states- brutal assholes. So I don't care what Obama claimed he was going to supporting- he very obviously wasn't defending human rights.
If you think decapitating the Gaddafi regime and letting the various factions fight it out in the entirely predictable and inevitable power vacuum was a good result, you are insane. If you thought arming the likes of ISIS and turning Syria and parts of Iraq into no-go zones where women are further abused was a good result, you are insane.
Mind you, I don't think you are insane. I think you are a standard lefty who is so blinded by tribal politics that he would deny reality a 1000 times rather than hold his President Murder Drone to account for betraying the ideals he claimed to support.
Overt, unlike Syria, the Libyan revolution was both home grown and led by democratic forces who did manage to institute elections. That it was overcome by tribal and religious forces was the part Obama regretted not acting to help them resist. Yes, he agrees he f..ked that up, but not for acting at first. You need to read more about it. Likewise, we were and are very minor players in Syria where there wasn't a similar democratic faction.
As to Iran's green revolution, what don't you get about the fact that Obama shooting off his mouth about it would not be successfully used by the fundamentalists? We weren't going to invade Iran.
Of course your fair assessment of these events, outside of the tribal loyalties of the right, is indicated in your respectful nickname for Obama, a person himself capable of fair assessments of the region.
Lol. A true believer. Ignorant as always Joe. Protect the gospel/narrative!
in Libya there was a legitimate revolutionary movement in favor of democracy
Then why have they been the least successful faction, perceived by most people in Libya as a puppet government of the UN?
Why was the actually successful revolution the one led by the Muslim Brotherhood? That's the closest one to a "democratic" movement we've seen - is that the one Obama supported?
Your reference to 'tribal groups' is nonsense - the third side was/is Haftar, who represents essentially the same sort of ideology as Qaddaffi, and is the guy who will probably come out on top.
You're trying to sound knowledgeable, but you're demonstrating that you know jack about Libya.
Stand by, Square, Joe needs some time to furiously Google some lame-ass response he pulled from Daily Kos.
There must be Vox explainer.
Red, I don't read Daily Kos or as claimed by someone here, Democratic Underground. You seem well schooled in MAGA speak however, so what do you read?
You seem well schooled in MAGA speak however, so what do you read?
Books that don't require crayons to finish, shitlib.
As I noted Square, the democratic faction quickly set up a government with national elections resulting in a National Congress which ruled for 2 years. Obviously it was not strong enough to resist the tribal and religious factions which were all armed and loaded for bear. This is where Obama failed to support the legitimate and democratic revolution of Libya, unlike any other in the region.
the "democratic" faction quickly set up a government with national elections resulting in a National Congress which ruled parts of Tripoli for 2 years
FTFY
Obviously it was not strong enough to resist the tribal and religious factions
Again, you haven't the foggiest idea what you're talking about. Just stop.
Square, thanks for adjusting to the fact that the revolutionary faction most able to unite the country, hold elections, and remain in power for 2 years was democratic. That happened nowhere else in the ME, and also included parades honoring the US. Too bad Obama did not supply more support.
Square, thanks for adjusting to the fact that the revolutionary faction most able to unite the country, hold elections, and remain in power for 2 years was democratic.
Holy shit you're an idiot.
They "united" parts of Tripoli, and did so through force of UN-supplied arms. That's why I put "democratic" in scare-quote, you ninny.
The closest thing to a democratically representative body is the revolutionary government that was in Tobruk (waving Egyptian flags), but that actually was religious fundamentalists, by and large. Haftar dealt with them and co-opted that movement, and ruled most of Libya outside of Tripoli until the most recent cease-fire saved what was left of the UN puppet government.
Square, the party affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood that you think was the strongest force received 150k votes for it's party in the national Congress. The pro democratic party, with numerous sub-parties joined won over 700k votes. Those were the number 1 and 2 parties in the election of 2012. Your supposed "puppet" government rightly had UN support as the both the most popular and democratic of the forces involved in the revolution. To repeat, nothing like this happened anywhere else in the ME and so deserved our support. Too bad it didn't get it for long enough.
Square, the party affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood that you think was the strongest force received 150k votes for it's party in the national Congress. The pro democratic party, with numerous sub-parties joined won over 700k votes. Those were the number 1 and 2 parties in the election of 2012.
It's 2021 you senile idiot.
Red, the subject was history. Keep up or shut up.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) said on Twitter that billionaires should be taxed more. "I keep forgetting you're still alive," responded billionaire Elon Musk.
When a millionaire shows up to a billionaire fight.
Bernie's net worth is $3 including his homes.
So, corrupt multimillionaire up against the richest guy (and possibly the smartest guy), on the planet.
Don't look, do you have any idea what homes are worth in counties that didn't go for Trump, you know, where people want to live, have jobs, and that produced 70% of 2020 GDP?
What does that have to do with the fact that Bernie is out of his league here?
Don't look, what league is that? I didn't think governance was supposed to be only by the richest, but hey, I'm not in the GOP either.
Bernie is in league with nazis. Literally he has promoted more nationalism and more socialism
Ah, Nazis! Sorry dude, 1st one to call the other side Nazis loses.
Imposing a rule unilaterally? Definitely doesn’t come across as Nazi.
Ok chumby, you're out to. Head to the silly tent.
Make me, irrelevant authority.
Oh, you're already there!
Only in your head. Which is irrelevant.
You are out of your league as well.
Indeed Don't look, but I like slumming and preaching to the natives.
So a socialist whose entire career has been spent living off other people's taxes owns at least one home valued at $3mil, in an overpriced community where the poor can't afford to live.
This isn't the own you think it is.
He and his wife have 2 homes I think - they married later and she has one - and yes they are better off than the poor Bernie tries to serve - and the GOP "populists" don't - but not rich. Bernie came from nothing, but gets a $174k salary as a senator, which he has apparently banked for years now. He has never been accused by anybody of being on the take, and unlike Trump, he doesn't have to hide whatever it is he does.
A socialist making $174K a year off other people's taxes who owns 2 houses is still not the own you think it is, even if he's not "rich." He's still wealthier than most Americans. And if he's been banking his money for years, that's even less of an own than you think it is.
Caring about the poor is lovely, but they're still poor and Bernie still has 2 houses and $174K salary from the public coffers.
Socialism is a boutique ideology for people who can afford the luxury.
Not getting the point Cronut. All the people in the Senate are well off by that standard and Bernie is near the bottom
And? None of that addresses the wealth disparity between publicly funded Bernie and the unwashed masses he claims to champion.
How would like that addressed Chumby and will the rule apply on a non-partisan basis?
How would I like Bernie’s hypocrisy addressed? Is that what you are asking?
Chumby, it's that English thing again. Hypocrisy doesn't mean voting for things you don't like, it's for voting for things at odds with what you advocate.
It isn’t the voting. It is the being. Cronut’s point.
Aha, it's an existential problem then Chumby? It's his "being".
Deep stuff!
Joe, you missed the plot. Again. Good luck with things in the future.
Damn, this thread should embarrass you Joe. But it won’t I’m sure, because you don’t understand what’s going on.
Most of his money came from paying his wife from campaign funds.
I'll use a favorite source of Joe's as the link.

Schweizer said that shortly after his wife joined Sanders' administration, she set up a media buying business registered to the Sanders' home in Vermont – despite having no previous experience in the field – and started doing media buying for her husband's campaign.
"And, the dirty little secret here is, Steve, when you do a media buy, the buyer is entitled to a commission of between 10 and 15 percent," Schweizer added. "So, it can be quite lucrative."
According to Schweizer, at least $150,000 was funneled to Jane Sanders, though he stressed that the practice was not illegal. Doocy said the Sanders campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
From a different source^
This also doesn't include the various roles given to his wife due to him being a Senator in Burlington, Vt.
Bernie is why all elected offials salaries should be $1. Bernie is such a useless retard nobody would want to work with him. Including the socialist comune that kicked him out. Then he would starve to death by not being able to afford food
Rev, that's a formula for only rich people holding office. You might want to think about that.
I know you are angry, but I have to disagree. The Texas Legislature has positively insulting salaries (below minimum wage). This has the result of no honest people being able to go into the legislature. If you want to run for office, you are either retired, independently wealthy, or corrupt.
Exactly
Because the polititions today aren't corrupt, or dishonest?
Bernie is literally a 1%-er. If you think that makes him "not rich" then what makes someone rich?
Overt, it's relative and if you want to sound off on rich politicians, Bernie would not be at the top of anyone's list.
Is there a national debate regarding Bernie’s wealth and say that of Mitt Romney? Or Nancy Pelosi?
Or is there one where publicly funded and wealthy Bernie says others need more?
English please
Yeah. You should learn it.
Haha. Again.
"it's relative"
Joe looks at me say Bernie is a 1%-er, and then objects that it is "all relative". Bernie is richer than 99% of the country (a relative comparison, right?), but now Joe wants to shift the goal posts and say we can only compare him to other politicians. Sure...right.
Do you ever even feel the tiniest bit dirty defending the indefensible? I mean, it is a fact that Bernie is rich. Rather than explain why that is irrelevant, you are trying to deny reality and dissemble about him not being rich-rich. It makes you look craven.
Overt, you must live 100 miles from Omaha. $3 million net worth with 2 homes is not even close to being rich. here you go:
"The minimum net worth of the top 1% is roughly $11.1 million."
https://www.investopedia.com/financial-edge/1212/average-net-worth-of-the-1.aspx
He’s not in the top 1% but within the top 10%.
Rich is subjective; a search for that produced articles on what net worth Americans consider to be wealthy. Again subjective. But Bernie meets that criteria.
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/12/net-worth-to-be-considered-wealthy-in-2021.html
Top 1%: no
Top 10%: yes
Rich: ask again later
Wealthy: yes
You get a point for pointing out Bernie isn’t top 1%. You lose several for trying to frame another’s argument by focusing on Bernie’s net worth versus some other politician(s) versus America.
Chumby, your dentist is in the top 10%. Too elitist for Congress?
What is my dentist’s net worth?
Overt, what definition are using for 1%. Income of $174K? All senators are then. Net worth of $3 million? My 2000 sq ft house is probably worth about $600,000 and I built it 30 years ago for less than $100k. With life insurance, wife's retirement, etc, I guess we're definitely "millionaires" but I thought that referred to income, not net worth. I'm not poor mouthing and very grateful for how we've done, but it's not that impressive
His wife makes money dumbass. Often off his influence. See above.
The Bern and his wife have over 450K in income....who the fuck are you kidding that Bernie and his wife ain't rich. They're lying hypocrites who dare to tell us 'plebes' what we should think. Fuck that.
Commentor, Bernie has been elected over and over at every level of Vermont politics, which was Republicans when he started. Look up his record as mayor of Burlington where he won over business leaders by his pragmatism and willingness to listen. He came from the "plebes" and didn't tell them what to do, he listened to them.
Bernie had been telling the nation something that Vermonters did not want:
https://www.npr.org/2017/09/13/550757713/why-bernie-sanders-single-payer-health-care-plan-failed-in-vermont
Or is NPR too pro Trump to be used as a reliable source?
Gee Chumby, I guess they will turn him out then after 30+ years representing the state. But wait, that article is from 2017 and he was reelected in 2018 with 67% of the vote
Bernie wanted it in 2017, the same time Vermont considered then rejected his idea locally. The argument is whether he listens to Vermont instead of telling them what to do. On one of the biggest Bernie issues, if not the biggest, he did not.
Chumby, the only time Sanders is mentioned in your link, other than the inaccurate headline, is here:
"SHAPIRO: For people who do support this policy, do you think the shortest way to getting it enacted is on a state-by-state basis or on the federal level as Senator Sanders is proposing?
BLUMBERG: I think doing it on a state-by-state basis is really challenging. ..."
As a senator of course Sanders couldn't institute a state plan, which is what the article is about.
Next?
The people of Vermont did not want this. Bernie did.
Next?
Chumby, you remain confused. Your own link says nothing of the kind, and as a US senator he would not be the promoter of a state health care plan. The governor was, as your link makes clear, and the only mention of Bernie in the article is about his favoring a federal health care plan.
Helllloooo! Anyone home?
Joe, you again missed the plot. If Reason would allow a coloring book version of this to be posted, perhaps you’d figure it out.
Oof. Brutal. You should take a break Joey

J Friday is a thread generator; and he accomplishes just that, with the usual troll deflections and what abouts.
I figured I'd keep following out of curiosity; is this some kind of ideologue who is obsessed with forcing others to do his will? Turns out he is just another troll who is here to distract and disrupt.
Muted. I suggest others do the same unless you enjoy wasting your time, or "engaging," with him.
Due to carefully arranged paperwork of ownership, of course.

Why so low? I expected more corruption and grift from old Bernie.

Closing arguments in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial are set to begin today.
I'll wait for the corporate press to sum it up for me.
Some person did something.
He shouldn't have been there so he's guilty.
He is a baby, so he should have stayed home, therefore he is guilty.
And before anyone forgets - he's white! What else is there to even discuss?
Some people did some things and it was White Supremacy.
"White People is Bad"
Already asked and answered.
I expect "white supremacy" to be in just about every article or segment covering it.

BREAKING: RITTENHOUSE GUN CHARGE DISMISSED
Thats a big L for libs.
Big W for lefty tear collectors. Ive got my barrels ready for when he walks.
I'd better swap the flatbed for a tanker trailer.
That's fantastic if true.
White Mike looks like an idiot know nothing yet again. he swore he understood this law since day one even in the face of the actual cited laws provided to him day one.
Cognitive dissonance. He still knows the law better than the judge now. Now all he has to say is that the judge is a racist piece of shit for dismissing this and he's still not forced to admit he's wrong.
People delude themselves and it's upsetting.
"Yet again" implies there was some point in the middle where it stopped. It seems pretty continuous to me.
One worry I have is the judge allowed the provocation language from the prosecution in. They also allowed lesser charges of reckless endangerment.
The whole world has seen now that Rittenhouse did not fire at anyone who didn't directly threaten him. If he is not guilty of homicide, I can't see that the judge has any choice but to throw out lesser charges.
If they need blood, maybe they could charge the lefty shit that fired the first shot into the air while 'Dumpster Fire Joe' chased Kyle with felony murder? If they want lesser charges, they could charge Grosskuntz with illegal concealed carry and brandishing.
I figured this out on Friday after about 10 minutes of research. Not surprised it took the media weeks.
https://reason.com/2021/11/12/the-white-house-says-more-government-spending-will-fix-inflation/?comments=true#comment-9206341
No way Rittenhouse gets convicted. The only thing the prosecution (and the press) had was that if Rittenhouse was carrying illegally, then his claim of self defense was potentially impaired. This is a huge vindication of the 2A.
Kyle COULD carry! Let's go Brandon!
As they said above, the Judge allowed the possibility that there was provocation, and reckless endangerment.
The trial is public, and yet youtube block Rekieta's stream for infringing on copyright. Silencing a non-mainstream source for having something to say.
Interesting. That was the only charge they realistically had a chance of getting to stick, right?

BREAKING: YouTube has suspended @RekietaMedia coverage of Kyle Rittenhouse trial
The relationship between President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris is reportedly at a low...
Just like between the rest of the country and each of them.
There is really nothing more delicious than seeing politicians when they think THEIR brand is salvageable at the expense of a one time political ally.
This Team Harris smear job is quite enjoyable. Not only does it show you the democrats circling into their firing positions, but it also shows you which journalists are clearly in the bag for which side.
This reminds me of the defections of Romney, et al. They really thought that their brands were salvageable as long as they could attack orange man. And it has done nothing good for them. At all.
If only the Biden admin were as clever in all things. Harris called him a racists, so what does he do - hires her and then sinks her by putting her in charge of the border crisis. The border crisis being an unwinnable problem politically; either she can make the left base happy or do something realistic that alleviates some of the problems.
Harris's nomination was solely to appease Hillary and her political harem. She would have likely been the Pres nominee if the Surf Mommy hadn't shanked her candidacy on live TV.
This is more of a power struggle between the Clinton and Obama factions for ultimate party control than it is a beef between Biden and Harris personally.
While I think some of that is also true, he as much came out and said the nominee had to be a woman of color so he could check his 2 boxes. Her senate seat being safe also helped.
In the aftermath of st. Floyd, the crazy wokeness that the dems are on right now, and their absolute obsession with melanin amounts and intersectionality, they really didnt give themselves many other options.
Sure, but he could have picked someone in that regard who wasn't a total moron, like Tammy Duckworth or Val Demings, and still checked off those boxes.
And of course the media gives cover for Harris. Between the "she is just getting impossible jobs!" to "its racism/sexism!".
Trump gave his son-in-law, who had no real position, "hey go fix the middle east". Not necessarily agreeing with this, but to act like asking the VP to take on the border is "unfair" and an impossible task is a joke. Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations.
VPs have been given a lot more responsibility for agenda and policy starting with Gore, particularly his climate apocalypticism as well as promoting NAFTA. It's not like it was for most of its existence where you essentially acted like a placeholder and did PR fluff.
If the President gives the VP a policy issue to pursue, the VP best treat it they're acting as the de facto President there, and start crafting a plan and execute it properly. VPs who can't do that and make excuses, like Harris and her staff, are going to have a bad time.
If Harris was smart--and she's not, she got where she is today by her talent at sucking off powerful men who could advance her career--she'd have spent the last 8 months camped out in the Rio Grande Valley and Gadsden Purchase working with the local government officials there, not going to fucking France to shop for dishes. No wonder Biden's puppet masters are pissed at her.
"Trump gave his son-in-law, who had no real position, "hey go fix the middle east". "
The hilarious part is, as right as you are in framing it that way, Kushner did a hell of a job by fixing it better than anyone else had in some time. As much as I dislike how much sway he and Ivanka had over Trump, he did a really good job with the Saudis and Israelis.
If Kushner did for Obama the Middle East work he did for Trump, they'd be giving Obama a second peace prize.
He would have actually deserved that one.
I don't think it's particularly bigoted to have low expectations of someone who cocksucked her way into power. Unless she was going to handle the border crisis on her knees, there was never any chance she'd succeed there.
Biden aint no Willie Brown
The tax break would allow eligible local media organizations, including newspapers, digital news websites and television stations to receive a tax credit of $25,000 per journalist they employ, and $15,000 for the following four years. The tax break can be claimed for up to 1,500 journalists.
While the measure is aimed at helping smaller local news outlets, bigger media organizations like Gannett will benefit from the tax break and could receive as much as $127.5 million over the next five years.

OBL's first law strikes again.
They're basically giving the big media companies the money to buy the smaller ones and then fire their journalists.

And despite simping hard for four years, Reason won't see a dime of that sweet, sweet trough money.
All they have to do is hire a journalist or two.
Do they have to be Journalists? Can they be Editors instead?
Lol
White House staff have complained about Harris' lack of focus.
Focus is the name of Joe's favorite shampoo.
Or it could be that when a political superior grabs Kamala from behind, she expects more than a hair sniff.
Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei, a famed artist and activist, warned Americans during an interview that aired late last week that they are already under the control of an authoritarian state, they just don’t realize it yet.
“In many ways, you’re already in the authoritarian state,” he said. “You just don’t know it.”
When asked how so, he responded, “Many things happening today in U.S. can be compared to Cultural Revolution in China.”
“Like people trying to be unified in a certain political correctness,” he continued. “That is very dangerous.”

"Green co-chair Robert Habeck said the proposed restrictions amounted to a "lockdown for the unvaccinated," reports Politico."
You know who else wanted to lockdown (or up) undesirable Germans?
"Austria Orders the Unvaccinated Back Into Lockdown"
The same totalitarian Democrat Governors who conspired to impose nearly identical lockdowns last year (purportedly for two weeks to "flatten the curve", but lasting for many months in order to destroy the economy, GOP businesses and defeat Trump in November) would have imposed this same policy in their states except that DNC surveys found only 10%-15% of the public (i.e. left wing Democrat sheeple) would be supportive.
By highlighting this totalitarian Austria lockdown (even though a state in Australia imposed a similar policy weeks ago), while ignoring this weekend's US Appeals Court ruling that stayed/nixed Biden's vaccine mandate this weekend, it seems like Britschgi is trying to promote more lock downs in the US.
BRITSCHGI
The lead article on Austria's lockdown would have been more informative and objective had it revealed that many countries in Europe are now experiencing skyrocketing increases and the highest (or second highest) rate of new covid cases since the pandemic began 20 months ago, including Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, Chechia, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, Hungary, Greece, Denmark and Germany (i.e. countries that imposed restrictive lockdowns last year).
Meanwhile, Sweden, which never imposed lockdowns or mask mandates, has had very few new covid cases since June. Seems like herd immunity has taken over Sweden.
https://ourworldindata.org/explorers/coronavirus-data-explorer?zoomToSelection=true&time=2020-09-19..latest&facet=none&pickerSort=desc&pickerMetric=new_cases_smoothed_per_million&Metric=Confirmed+cases&Interval=7-day+rolling+average&Relative+to+Population=true&Align+outbreaks=false&country=USA~GBR~ISR~SWE~DEU~AUT~CZE~BEL~IRL~NLD~DNK~SVN~SVK~HRV~HUN~GRC
Everyone knows everybody in Sweden died.
"The lead article on Austria's lockdown would have been more informative and objective had it revealed that many countries in Europe are now experiencing skyrocketing increases and the highest (or second highest) rate of new covid cases since the pandemic began 20 months ago"
Correct. And many of these countries have populations that are more than 80 percent vaccinated, and the vast majority of new cases are in those that are fully vaccinated.
No European country has achieved an 80% covid vaccine rate, and all but two of the European countries I cited have vaccination rates of 58% - 77.5%.
I strongly suspect that unvaccinated individuals still account for at least two thirds of new covid cases in Europe.
Seems unlikely.
One cause of confusion that I have seen is that news outlets tend to play fast and loose oscilating between "Percent of Population" and "Percent of Eligible Population". So when talking lovingly about Israel's vaccination efforts, it is 80% of eligible population, but when condemning those assholes in Florida, we talk about only 60% of the overall population.
"Myanmar's military government has convicted at least seven journalists since it overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February."
Only seven in nine months? Just wait until the new US Federal Information Purity Agency gets going. More like seven hundred!
"All the Tans wanted to do was take over a small restaurant space that was available and serve ramen to 10 guests per evening, three nights a week."
SFC officials are certainly assholes, but I question the business acumen of the Tans. Unless this would be some kind of performance art.
Or very expensive noodles.
How much could an expensive three course ramen omakase with appetizers even run? $60?
I see you aren’t from a large city.
Hah - I'm used to seeing $20 bowls of ramen; I'm throwing in $20 shishito peppers and a $20 anmitsu to get there.
Cincinnati is not considered to be a large city.
There are a lot of insults I can stomach, but calling me an Ohioan is over the line.
You are not even trying. $300
$1000 with the premium sake pairing.
For SF hipsters? If you managed to get hip with the right crowd, you might be able to sell $100 bowls of noodles.
My guess is, the restaurant would have 10 seats - for 10 guests at a time, like a traditional noodle bar, and the reporter, understanding less than nothing about the subject on which they are reporting - i.e. how restaurants are run - fucked this detail up.
Actually the plans for their restaurant space look very much like a traditional noodle bar, but there are 14 seats shown - 10 regular (bar height) and 2 ADA (regular table height) and 2 more at a window counter.
So, I can't see why anyone would think that they would only serve 10 guests per evening.
At least we built the camps for the Japanese; Austria is making people use their own houses.
Anyone thinking about opening a business in San Francisco is not smart enough to run a business.

Well sure, openly violate the constitution, but also openly violate the constitution on a variety of issues all at once.
There is a plausible argument for lack of mens rea.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10173895/Chicago-Police-watchdog-branded-insensitive-recommended-dead-Officer-Ella-French-suspended-3-days.html
Cops raid the wrong house, handcuff a naked woman, and then this lady cop has the nerve to let the woman get dressed in the bathroom.
If she hadn't been shot at a traffic stop she would have been forced out. Treating people with dignity and respect is unbecoming of a police officer.
She was part of a raid on a wrong house. So I feel like there needs to be some accountability for that.
I will admit that it does sound tone def to do it to a dead person though.
The raid was all male. She showed up afterwards and allowed the woman to get dressed while the men mocked her. Depraved indifference is a job requirement. She showed compassion. There's no way the rest of the crew would have allowed her to stay on the job.
While I think that she shouldn't have gotten the retroactive post death 3 day suspension, she wasn't suspended for letting the woman get dressed. She was suspended for not turning on her body camera after she was dressed and being involved in 2 incidents later without her camera on.
Gee, sarc caught lying again?
I missed that clarification, but it does sound like it was because of her camera not being turned on.
That was the justification for the reprimand. I'm talking about her being forced out of the job for not being being a callous sadist.
Understood
This lady friend of mine's ex was a cop. He quit the job because he was found himself becoming an arrogant asshole and didn't like it. So rather than fit in with the guys, he found respectable employment.
That is too bad actually. I feel like law enforcement needs more self aware people like that. The profession largely seems to attract some of the worst people. Most anyone decent is either miserable or gets out of the profession pretty quickly. There are, of course, some exceptions.
I think the profession does attract good people who want to help people. The problem is that the prevailing attitude in police forces is "I do what I want, and you do what I say." So good people are faced with three choices: quit, get forced out, or conform. This guy found himself conforming, so he quit.
This is deeper than just some stupid hatred of police. You look at repressive societies around the world and they all have no problems finding thugs to do their bidding. The only thing I can think of is that it's all about power. Police officers literally do whatever they want because nobody will stop them. Their lies in their reports and testimony are treated as the truth, so they feel like they can shape reality. That kind of power has got to be the reason they do it. Right? Wrong? Who cares? It doesn't apply to me!
Power is an end, not a means.
I'm not sure that's realistically possible. Yes, some literal saint could take the gig, but the "penalty" for being the good guy cop is that your fellow officers will leave you to die in a bad situation if you find yourself there. And the vast majority of people won't deal well with that, and will either comply with the culture, or leave beforehand. And there's not that many potential saints applying for the job to start with.
Like, I have a friend, who was a serious, hardcore libertarian who tried to go that route. Became a cop. And ten years later... there's not much libertarian left there. It's really disappointing, actually.
The libertarian conundrum is that those who don't want power over others don't seek positions of power. And when they do...
Nobody's going to win an election by saying "I'm gonna fire most of the federal work force and end all transfer payments."
Who doesn't know someone who would be negatively affected?
According to the article the reprimand report was written before she got shot, and they're not allowed to redact it. So the union is being dishonest in their portrayal of the report, which is to be expected.
Big surprise that the union is lying. Also unsurprising that Lori Lightfoot is trying to take advantage of the situation.

Though many police officers wake up every morning and think to themselves "Maybe this my lucky day and I'll get to kill someone."
During an Ashli Babbitt debate a while back Sarcasmic made a comment that she died because she “fucked around and found out”. I really wish I would have saved that comment because it really messes with his “all cops are assholes” narrative. I am sure he will claim he was just living up to his Sarcasmic name but you can’t complain about people not debating you when you pull that crap.

Don't worry OBL, the jury's been fortified with enough media threats to insure that they reach the correct conclusion. They'll get him on something.
serve ramen to 10 guests per evening, three nights a week
This doesn't seem like a sound business model for renting space in San Francisco.
You underestimate how much San Franciscans are willing to pay for authentic cup ramen served by authentic Asians.
I'll be generous and assume the "guests" are two tops, so 30 two-tops per week. Assume $100 per person on average (pretty typical for an SF dinner date price), you're looking at about $12000 month, gross. After expenses... well you can make more than that driving for Uber. Seriously.
This was either a vanity project for someone who already has a ton of money or.. they have no idea what they're doing.
You're neglecting to consider that the more exclusive the place, the more people are willing to pay for the privilege of bragging about how they were let into the exclusive place. That and the possibility that they're only serving ramen three nights a week because the other four nights they're using the kitchen to cook meth.
It’s always a good idea to have a cash business as a front.
Austria the country noted mostly for one thing.
SEIG HEIL!
We can thusly surmise Austria will commit a false flag against a neighboring country, accusing it of spreading contagion and invading it. One would also tend to think the Austrians would have, by now, realized what an authoritarian state looks like.It appears they too have selective memory.
How soon before troops are goose stepping down the main boulevard?
Will Austria reactivate the Hitler Youth program to spy on and expose the unvaxxed?
The first rule of doing business in India is that you have to hire a fixer who knows exactly which civil servants need to be given envelopes of appreciation and exactly how much appreciation needs to be put into the envelopes to encourage the civil servants to do their jobs in an expeditious manner in order to obtain the myriad permits and licenses to so much as fart in India. The difference between doing business in India and doing business in San Francisco is mostly a matter of the size of the envelopes.
Ironically, India is getting cleaned up while San Francisco is going the other direction.
San Fran trying to compete to see if they can get more poor people + feces on the street than India. So far, its going well

The guy who was shot in the arm and testified under oath that he had pointed his pistol at Rittenhouse was interviewed by Cooper on CNN and asked if he had done so.
Cooper allowed him to waffle all over the place, mostly whining that the defense attorney had 'caused' him to say that, without ever saying "no".

Not all will live on...
But I was assured lawfare was invented by the Texas state legislature this year.
You clearly don't remember when Cubby v. Compuserve and Oakmont v. Prodigy were wrongly decided, overturned, resurrected by state legislature, and then contravened by federal legislature, giving birth to the 1A of the Internet.
Otherwise, we would've had no internet and a tidal wave of trolls who would be, despite Compuserve winning and Prodigy losing, 100% successfully suing the shit out of anyone and everyone who tried to build one.
"Relative to all voters in the community, online participants in local hearings in Massachusetts during the pandemic were whiter (by a 13 percent margin), older (22 percent likelier to be over the age of 50) and more likely to be homeowners than renters (a 25 percent gap). These gaps are roughly the same as Einstein and her co-authors observed with in-person housing meetings pre-pandemic. The only difference is that partisanship went up on Zoom: Republicans were less likely to participate in local meetings online."
----"Thought Zoom Would Save Local Democracy? It Hasn’t."
Have they tried capping the number of whites, people over the age of 50, and homeowners?
Too racist?
Maybe they restrict freedom of speech to people in an invitation only focus group--that accurately reflects a diverse community?
Too unconstitutional?
Yeah, that's the problem with equality of outcome shit--it's incompatible with individual rights and capitalism.
Think this crap isn't anti-capitalist? Then why are they trying to solve the problem of people with more invested in the city--homeowners--being more interested in the way the place is run?
What's next--maybe we should start asking why the only people who are allowed to vote for the board of directors in a publicly traded corporation are the shareholders?
If people who actually own property in the city are disproportionately represented at city council meetings--because they're invested their life savings in the outcome--that isn't evidence of a problem with civil engagements. That's the solution!
If he wants to improve civil engagement, why isn't the article about how to turn renters into homeowners?
We could try "No representation without taxation!"
Yeah, the people who are actually paying property taxes are disproportionately represented among those who actually show up to the meeting about raising property taxes.
How do we fix that?!
This is framing. This is all socialist framing.
I do not buy into their assumptions.
What's next--maybe we should start asking why the only people who are allowed to vote for the board of directors in a publicly traded corporation are the shareholders?
They're already doing that.
I fucking hate the bullshit term "stakeholder".
The only legitimate steakholder is next to the grill at a BBQ.
Found it, it's called "Stakeholder Capitalism". Romanian guy discussing the concept: https://youtube.com/watch?v=YvTfLO0Fi3w
When they use different words for the same thing, it doesn't actually change the thing they're talking about in reality. This is why it's so important to hit people with the fundamentals. Rights are the obligation other people have to respect your choices. Property rights are the obligation other people have to respect the choices you make about the property you own.
Capitalism is when wealth is distributed by markets, prices are set by markets, and industry is owned as private property. The legitimate purpose of government in such a system is to protect your right to make choices about the property you own--among other rights.
Socialism is when wealth is distributed by government, prices are set by government, and industry is effectively owned by government. The government is such a system makes the choices about property--who uses it, who manages it, who benefits from it, etc.
If the government forces the owners to abide by the decisions of non-owners, then it is not a capitalist system. It is a socialist system. They can call the thieves, trespassers, and looters "stakeholders", but using different words doesn't magically turn socialism into capitalism.

Haha, eat shit, Austin:
Austin school district falls short of enrollment goal, leaving employees without 2% raises
María Méndez, Austin American-Statesman
Mon, November 15, 2021
The Austin school district fell short of its goal to enroll more than 77,000 students by October, leaving 2% annual raises for employees off the table.
In June, school district leaders agreed to give employees 2% raises if the district reached an enrollment of 77,351 students through new community outreach efforts. But last month, officials reported an enrollment of 74,727 students, including 2,577 learning remotely this semester.
Texas generally funds public schools based on the number of students in schools.
District leaders are reporting an additional $18.6 million shortfall in revenue due to the lower-than-expected enrollment and attendance. The school board already had planned to spend $43.6 million in reserves this year.
"How do I pay for a raise when I didn't generate the dollars?" Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde told the American-Statesman.
Austin's been ground zero in Texas for the California tech bugpeople migration, and the cost of housing has gone through the roof thanks to all the liquidity that's been injected into the market (like every other place these locusts have migrated to over the last decade). Hopefully a lot more urban areas see this happen.

Unless there are any last moment theatrics, it looks like Pelosi has the votes to pass Biden's socialist, Green New Deal budget reconciliation bill.
I should say that if they pass this bill despite Joe Biden's approval rating continuing to plummet, despite the results of the Virginia and New Jersey elections, and despite the reports of continued inflationary pressure, it will look like the moderates are either completely divorced from reality or committing political suicide.
Even IF IF IF it passes the House, there is still the question of whether Manchin and Sinema are on board. As it stands, the House is expected to pass the budget reconciliating bill--without any Republican support--and when it goes to the Senate, Manchin and Sinema are expected to tear certain parts of it to shreds--especially the family leave portion, some of the Green New Deal mechanisms, the portion that gives amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, etc. . .
If you read most of the news on this, they'll tell you that the question is whether the progressives in the House will vote for the bill after Manchin and Sinema are through chopping it up, but that probably isn't the spot where the the gears are grinding. I think the moderates in the House are more likely to object before its sent to the Senate.
The reason is because the Moderate Democrats don't want to go on record voting for raising the cost of energy just as winter is starting, giving amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, and other controversial provisions--when everyone knows they won't survive in the Senate.
The Senate parliamentarian has already ruled (repeatedly) that amnesty for illegal aliens can't be included in a budget reconciliation bill--meaning it will be subject to the filibuster. The Democrats can't pass that. Even if they tried, Manchin would vote against it, and they need every single Democrat vote in a budget reconciliation bill. Everyone already knows that Manchin will pull out the amnesty provisions anyway, some of the worst Green New Deal stuff, etc.--and the moderates don't want to go on the record voting for this controversial stuff if it won't end up in the bill sent back to the House anyway.
Look at this from the perspective of a Democrat representative from a purple district. None of them wants to go on the record voting for hated legislation--only to have the legislation fail anyway. You're going to get some credit from some blue voters for passing it. You're going to get a lot of opposition from red voters for voting for it. If you vote for it, and it doesn't pass--you get the worst of both worlds. You don't get any credit for actually accomplishing anything, and your Republican opponent can point to you voting for the Green New Deal and amnesty anyway!
I think where the gears are grinding right now is that Democrat moderates in the House want to be sure that Manchin and Sinema are on board. And they don't want to go on the record for controversial provisions that won't survive in the Senate anyway.
They are going to pass this thing, and if it takes shooting someone to do it, so be it.
The people the moderates are shooting are themselves!
FYI, they are running ads in AZ thanking Sinema for supporting the BBB. Just a couple weeks ago they were running scare ads instead.
That may be damage control.
I haven't heard about Sinema officially weighing in one way or the other.
I suspect the Democrats need to do a lot of damage control in Arizona after that stunt they pulled with Sinema in the restroom.
And that ad may be a way of reminding Sinema of what they can do in her state when a challenger comes along in the primaries--if she doesn't toe the progressive party line.
your optimism is a beautiful thing.
>>Manchin and Sinema are expected ...
who is doing the expecting here? I expect them to side with (D) once their children are threatened or whatever (D) does after you sign your soul in blood to join
I think the part about Manchin tearing the amnesty and family leave portions out of the bill are generally accepted. Regardless of whether this should be expected, I believe it generally is expected.
as always, hopes are high you are correct.
That's the way the people who want it to pass in its entirety are seeing it. I believe all the mainstream news outlets are calling it that way. That's what must happen in order for any of it to pass, and they can't get past the Senate parliamentarian. If she says they can't use budget reconciliation to get an immigration amnesty bill through the Senate, then they either need to strip it, pass it despite her, or nix it.
My prognostication.
If/when the House passes the bill, the Senate Parliamentarian, Senators Manchin and Sinema will very likely rewrite/amend the bill in the Senate (by removing every policy/clause/sentence/word they choose).
If/when/after that occurs, all 50 Dems will likely vote for the bill, and Harris will deliver the 51st vote (and a speech praising what's left of Biden's Build Back Better socialism).
Then the amended bill will go back to the House, and Pelosi will get the Democrats to immediately approve the bill (along with a speech praising Biden's fiscally disastrous socialist policies).
Then Biden will sign it into law, along with another speech praising himself.
Then, the GOP will take control of 50+ additional House seats and 3 - 5 Senate seats in next year's election.
"Then, the GOP will take control of 50+ additional House seats and 3 - 5 Senate seats in next year's election."
I think that's the way Pelosi has this train headed.
It only takes four of those 50+ representatives you're talking about to stop this bill, and I don't see why any of the 123 moderate Democrats in the House should want to get aboard that train.
It's a cookbook, and they know it's a cookbook!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dk01eeKMD_I
Surely at least four of them want to get out of line.
If/when/after that occurs, all 50 Dems will likely vote for the bill, and Harris will deliver the 51st vote (and a speech praising what's left of Biden's Build Back Better socialism).
Interesting thought given the "Harris is being set up to fail." kerfuffle above. One *might* almost conceptualize a sort of in-party coup that ends with a Harris/Sinema ticket in 2024.
Beto O’Rourke is running for governor of Texas, challenging Abbot.
Because he did well against Cruz in 2018, doesn't mean he'll do well against Abbot in 2022.
He's on the wrong side of the president's first midterm. The first midterm in a president's first term are almost always a referendum on the president. 2018 was such an election--even if it wasn't for the House or a national office. In the midterm elections of 2018m the Texas Democrats who turned out to vote in House elections against Trump--were voting for Beto the same ballot. That's why he did so well. Now that Biden is in office, Republicans will be swarming the voting booths to vote for Republican representatives to the House (to show their opposition to Biden), and Beto will be on the receiving end of that. The fact that gave him such an advantage in 2018 will be working against him in 2022--and probably in a larger proportion.
That being said, we should probably expect Abbot to move to the left between now and November of 2022.
Without a major scandal, I don't see how O'Rourke could beat Abbot (even if left wing millionaires give O'Rourke even many more millions of dollars).
During his two unsuccessful campaigns (for Senator and President), O'Rourke has pissed off every gun owner, conservative, Republican and libertarian in Texas.
I don't know how important pandemic issues will be a year from now, but the court staying Biden's vaccine mandate is making Abbot's actions in that regard look pretty good right about now--regardless of whether it should. If there was any fear of Abbot's actions becoming a serious liability, the courts seem to made a non-issue. The only thing most people will remember is that Abbot opposed Biden's vaccine mandate.
Damn it, I really don't want to vote for Abbot, but fuck Beto in his gun confiscating pie hole.
Fuck Beto!

Wasn't everyone involved white? If so, why are they bracing for riots?
Because 1) a lot of lefties actually thought the people he shot were black until the trial started, and 2) they sincerely believe that armed high school-age rednecks are going to start patrolling in black neighborhoods and randomly shoot black people like Amon Goeth did in Schindler's List.
So who is going to bother to riot? I predict a whole lot of nothing, regardless of the verdict.
Depends on how many Antifarts decide to show up from Madison and Chicago.
They were joining the party, not starting it.
No black people are going to be rioting for a couple of dead honkies.
Exactly. So who's going to riot over two dead whitebreads killed by some mayo motherfucker?
Madison

Elon Musk has done more to change the world using investors, capitalism and markets than Bernie Sanders has using taxpayer money, socialism, and central planning, but that's not really a fair comparison--because as a lifelong politician, Bernie Sanders has never accomplished anything.
Musk is an adept at getting government money like no-interest recession loans, tax breaks, and he even got Tesla some pandemic cash.
If it’s so easy, why didn’t you do it?
Bernie Sanders has never accomplished anything

And,. again, that is not about getting paid for achievement.
There is no performance metric. No completion date. No way to tell the difference between when Bernie Sanders performed well and when he performed poorly.
His wealth is achievement free.
Money falling into your lap for failing to achieve anything is not an achievement.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Elon Musk's reply.
But I just went to Wikipedia (I know, Wikipedia) to see if Sanders has accomplished anything:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Sanders
There are a few things he has done that I believe Ken would actually praise him for, if I understand Ken's political positions:
- Opposed the PATRIOT Act. Amended it to remove a provision which would have given the government snooping powers to examine American's library borrowing and book purchases.
- Opposed the Iraq War.
- Opposed PNTR (permanent normal trade relations) with China.
None of these things are accomplishments, since they all happened, anyway. But it is an illustration of how even Bernie Sanders, an evil progressive has common ground with Ken, although Ken would prefer to demonize him.
None of these things are accomplishments,
Exactly, yet you pressed on.
"if I understand Ken's political positions"
You probably don't, but that's never stopped you from deliberately misrepresenting and lying about them.
There's a vanishingly small amount of issues which Mike *does* understand.
Opposed PNTR (permanent normal trade relations) with China.
Yeah, I remember back when that was cool with the Democrats.
Having an opinion isn't an achievement either.
Developing heavy rockets for a tiny fraction of what it costs NASA to do--and saving the taxpayers billions of dollars with every launch is an achievement.
Manufacturing electric cars that people will wait on lists for a year or more to buy--even without government subsidies--is an achievement.
Bernie Sanders cost the taxpayers trillions of dollars without any significant results--and wants to spend $6 trillion more of the taxpayers' money to fight climate change.
Elon Musk saves the taxpayers billions of dollars and transforms the entire auto industry with his wildly profitable success giving consumers an attractive option to fight climate change.
Elon Musk is actually solving the problems Bernie Sanders blabs about and squanders our resources on. That progressives can't tell the difference between them is both hilarious and telling. That Elon Musk forgets Bernie Sanders is still alive is funny because it's true. Bernie Sanders' contributions to social transformation are entirely insignificant. Elon Musk is transforming society through investment and selling products to consumers in markets.
Part of Bernie Sanders' infrastructure bill has the taxpayers coughing up billions to bring broadband to rural America--a problem Musk is already solving through SpaceX's Starlink!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starlink
One of them is wiring rural broadband at huge cost to the taxpayers with giveaways to legacy cable companies that are circling the drain. The other one is blanketing the world with broadband at no cost to the taxpayers whatsoever. And progressives are so stupid, they can't tell the difference between the two.
Can you imagine if you had to work for a progressive that was so stupid, she couldn't tell the difference between achievement and non-achievement? What is the progressive performance metric if Bernie Sanders is an achiever? That is a nightmare world they want to create.
The lady from environmental services that cleans the bathroom in the office achieved more this morning than Bernie Sanders has in 40 years of "working" as a politician, and I have far more respect for the lady from environmental services than I do for Bernie Sanders.
OK, Boomer.
Ooh. Sick burn!
The progressive performance metric is "did the government do it centrally" and "did the government make sure no one outside the government did better than I'm doing off of it".
I applaud him for taking those positions.
It's too bad he's absolute shit on just about everything else and never saw a spending bill he didn't like.

Alex Jones is like CNN and NPR but for the other side.
I don't know if he's a conservative - I know that many on the left have decided to label him that way. But he was pretty anti-Republican during his whole '9-11 was an inside job' phase.
Also, CNN and NPR are propaganda. Jones is just yellow journalism (maybe speculative fiction). Nobody was being cribbed questions on a debate Jones was hosting.
He's George Noory, if Noory were an insufferable asshole who was not the least bit funny or entertaining.
Alex Jones is a court jester. Among his jobs is to take lurking news that might otherwise uncontrollably reveal itself later, causing problems, and break those stories in a manner calculated to leave an impression of that only kooks like Jones would be concerned. That the news is best categorized as yet another crazy conspiracy theory.
He really said that Sandy Hook was faked? What an asshole.
At the same time, courts don't hold trials to award sympathy points. The only way a defamation charge applies (assuming the description 'Jones portrays' is accurate and not 'Jones accused') is if the plaintiffs are profiting from their kids being dead.
I should go find mikes posts about trump wanting to make defamation easier and his thoughts there.

Binger's closing statement is full of lies. Not just malicious interpretations, but actual lies by introducing facts that weren't brought up in trial. Even worse, he told them that, legally, you can't argue self-defense if you brought a gun. He lied to the jury about the law in his closing.
If any half-competent lawyer was defending Rittenhouse they'd shred Binger with closing, but Richards scares the crap out of me. This could be devastating.
If the verdict takes longer than 1 hour, then it's bad news for Kyle.

Pretty sure the other charges fail; self-defense. Looks like he walks.
I thought he was going to walk prior to Friday. The prosecution intercepted with no time left on the clock by getting "provocation" added to the jury instructions. I'm actually scared that we're going to see a compromised verdict and Kyle convicted on manslaughter or something.
I don't trust Richards to construct a competent closing argument. He's shown he's a very poor communicator and a pretty weak lawyer throughout the trial.
I don't trust Richards to construct a competent closing argument. He's shown he's a very poor communicator and a pretty weak lawyer throughout the trial.
Maybe, but Binger seems to be doing his best to throw pick-6 after pick-6 in his closing statement.
Dude just argued that FMJ can go for 500 yards after penetrating through a body, and said Rittenhouse should have, no shit, "fired a warning shot."
For those who don't know, the #1 rule of the Joe Biden School of Gun Safety is actually illegal.
This plus the fact that the gun charge was dropped and the instruction that retreat is a function of self-defense makes his chances a lot better, IMO.
Dude just argued that FMJ can go for 500 yards after penetrating through a body
5.56? A body ~1.5m off the ground? Point blank?
I could maybe be convinced an FMJ .50 BMG, maybe even a .338 can go 500 yds. fired point blank through a body 2-2.5m off the ground. *searches for back of cocktail napkin*
Speed kills. If, big if, the bullet held together, then if it exited on an upward trajectory, with sufficient velocity and spin, I can see it continuing on. Ballistics is funny like that sometimes.
In this case though, that Aguila 55 grain FMJ seems less strong than even M193. I mean, it blew up that guy's bicep in what, 3-4 inches of tissue? Acted like a friggin varmint bullet. I don't know that even HPBT stuff would be that destructive, that fast.
So this DA's an idiot for a variety of reasons, but that quote might not be one of them.
Speed kills.
That's terminal ballistics. We're talking post-terminal. An unimpeded 5.56 has an ~5ft. drop (from level and a shouldered rifle aimed at the torso is, presumably, below level) at 500 yds., ~10 ft. at 600. A few degrees of angle doesn't make up for the loss of energy and stability of going through a body even if the bullet is intact. You would still need more velocity, much higher BC (phenomenally so given the density of air vs. the density of meat), and more mass (or a combination thereof). Fairly certain you could pass the 500 yd. mark with a .50 BMG, less certain with a .338 (win mag or lapua), dubious with pretty much any .30 caliber/~7mm round.
Another quote: "Being scared is not a legal justification."
Dude, what? It's the whole basis for a self-defense case!
Is Binger taking legal advice from Twitter or something?
He's got to be trying to throw this conviction. Nobody's this stupid. Not after doing his job for as long as he has.
As someone who has tried to get into a similar position as this ADA, I'd refuse to take the case, were I him. I can't ethically make the case that the kid did anything criminal here, and if I can't, then I ethically can't prosecute. Fuck it, I'll take private clients on the courthouse steps, before I compromise my integrity and credibility like this clown.
"...said Rittenhouse should have, no shit, "fired a warning shot."..."
Thereby giving the other guy time to aim carefully!
I missed it, but sure hope someone in the jury sees that as the pathetic special-pleading it is.
Firing a warning shot when there's a crowd is textbook reckless endangerment. Even if it's into the ground, a ricochet can catch someone in a foot and cause severe injury. If it's into the air, that's insane.
Binger things not firing is provocative, but causing reckless endangerment to a crowd is reasonable. What a loon.
At this point, I think he was just trying to get soundbites for the bluechecks to isolate.
If it's into the air, that's insane.
(Not to defend Binger, but) Not smart, but not insane. Depending on the round, the bullet comes out of the barrel supersonic and is stabilized by angular momentum. It can't reattain that speed/energy downward without being specifically stably reoriented (i.e. re-spun) and otherwise effectively re-fired. The false assumption is that a projectile fired upward necessarily takes the same amount of time coming down that it does going up. That's not true, time isn't conserved.
Admittedly, 55 grains of FMJ travelling at ~32 fps wouldn't feel good or be entirely harmless, but I wouldn't call anyone who volunteered to step in front of it a hero (or anyone who fired it 'insane'). Even if you work aerodynamics magic and quadruple the terminal velocity, you're at ~120 fps which is high-school pitching speeds. So, imagine a HS kid throwing a .223 bullet at you. It's the same urban legend as a dropping a quarter off the Sears Tower or Empire State building.

Hell, your average paintball travels at 300 ft/s.
Ultimately, what makes a bullet lethal is it's relative speed in the horizontal plane. Firing it into open air guarantees that *all* of *that* energy gets dissipated.
Honestly, the crazy thing is that I think the McMichaels have a decent chance to walk in the Arbery case and Rittenhouse has a good chance of a compromised verdict in Kenosha. The McMichaels have had competent lawyers and Rittenhouse's lawyer has made so many mistakes.

So half of Vermont’s far left gerontocratic freak show will shuffle and wobble off the stage in a little over a year. Here’s hoping their weird assortment of oldsters and hippies can do a little better with their next choice, but Im not overly optimistic.
I keep forgetting he’s still alive.

I guess, trying to look on the bright side of this massive spending, it’s good there will at least be a manager. Maybe we will get some actual infrastructure out of it, even if it’s crazy overpriced infrastructure.
Remember when you said the whole bill was infrastructure?
Congrats anti-vaxxers! Those guys you convinced are feeling it now.
"At least 50 percent of people who survive covid-19 experience a variety of physical and psychological health issues for six months or more after their initial recovery, according to research on the long-term effects of the disease, published in the journal JAMA Network Open.
Tracker: U.S. cases, deaths and hospitalizations
Often referred to as “long covid,” the adverse health effects vary from person to person. But the research, based on data from 250,351 adults and children, found that more than half experience a decline in general well-being, resulting in weight loss, fatigue, fever or pain.
Do you think you’re experiencing long-haul covid symptoms? Share your experience with The Post.
About 20 percent have decreased mobility, 25 percent have trouble thinking or concentrating (called “brain fog”), 30 percent develop an anxiety disorder, 25 percent have breathing problems, and 20 percent have hair loss or skin rashes. Cardiovascular issues — chest pain and palpitations — are common, as are stomach and gastrointestinal problems....."

Dear Washington Post,
COVID killed me.
Sincerely,

apart from losing smell/taste (a very specific and noticeable symptom with few other causes), whether you had that symptom is not meaningfully predicted by whether you actually had covid.
you can see here that not having had covid but thinking you did led to VASTLY more reports of “long covid” than having had covid and NOT thinking you had.
Yeah man, why wouldn't we accept an article from "el gato malo" as definitive.
Meanwhile, the study above written in the Post didn't get their data from the suggestion box.
"The primary outcome was the frequency of PASC, which was defined as the presence of at least 1 abnormality diagnosed by (1) laboratory investigation, (2) radiologic pathology, or (3) clinical signs and symptoms that was present at least 1 month after COVID-19 diagnosis or after discharge from the hospital.
