Brickbat: Knit-Picking

David and Paula Knight were dumbfounded when they received a ticket for driving in a bus lane in Bath, England. Bath is about 125 miles away from their home in Dorking, and they had not been in Bath on the day the violation happened. Then they took another look at the ticket and saw a photo from a traffic camera that was supposed to be proof of the violation. Instead, it showed a woman wearing a T-shirt with the word "KNITTER" written on it walking in the lane. Somehow her shirt had been confused with the Knights' personalized license plate, which reads "KN19 TER." A spokesman for the Bath council said it has withdrawn the ticket.

Are they The Knights Who Say:"Knit?"
Well, since knitting is a peaceful, honest endeavor, and a most enjoyable and useful one at that, We at The Knights, Ladies, and Trans-Jesters Who Say: "NIFF!" ("Non-Initiation of Force and Fraud") declare ourselves in full allegiance with The Knights Who Say: "Knit!" in their quest for justice against The Nanny Police State that is Great Britain, England, and the United Kingdom!
*NIFF! NIFF! NIFF!*

Peaceful my ass!
Look at those miniature spears! (probably for easy concealment)
Those are the weapons of terrorists for sure.
“Useful post”
Skynet starts out as a petty rent-seeker, you know.
The rent for a "Knitter" T-Shirt is £60... For now! But compounded by the minute, if'n ye don't pay up pronto!
Reason finally got down to the knitty gritty and dropped a headline pun. Well done.
They are casting purls before swine.
"purls before swine."
Inspired.
Darn, that was a good one.
I humbly 'fess I was pretty darned uncultured... Had to look up "purls"! Darn those yarns about purls; they tied me up!
Purl Bailey prolific yarn artist.
So it would seam. Puns of course are best left for threads like this one
That left me in stitches.
In the US we have the right to face our accuser in court (as long as it's not a Title IX violation, that is). Thus, demand to see the traffic camera in court!
Now, if the system was set up to issue automatic tickets, you should win. But if any human law enforcement agent reviews the pictures first, then they show up and you lose.
It wasn't a traffic camera, but I won my day in traffic court because the cop who issued the ticket was not a witness to the infraction. He showed up after the accident occurred.
Something to keep in mind.
Yeah, an officer is supposed to review the tickets. Wasn't there a case in Illinois where the camera company was issuing tickets and forging the name of a police officer - and continued to do so even after that officer had died, thus exposing the scam?
I think they ought to pay up. Rigorously designed scientific studies have proven that machine-learning-based image recognition now has superior accuracy compared to humans. That's why captchas are automatically generated, and the algorithm grades *your* performance rather than the other way around. But it's also why captchas are quickly becoming obsolete: troll bots are now better at passing the test than you.
That couple that forgot about their trip to Bath and now don't want to pay for their infraction may sincerely believe they see a woman in a T-shirt, but they're engaging in motivated reasoning and influenced by cultural biases.
Amazing that they admitted they were wrong.
But they didn't. They merely withdrew the penalty.
I had to go through a similar thing with the Oxnard, CA police for illegally parking a car I don't own in a town I've never been to. Fortunately the police officer got the description of the offending vehicle correct so they withdrew the penalty. I guess they figured they couldn't win a court case against a black Ford Mustang by going after the owner of a white Honda suv.
