Good News: The World Finally Has a Malaria Vaccine
This is great progress, but there is even more in the vaccine pipeline.

Malaria cases annually number nearly 230 million, and the disease kills more than 400,000 people—mostly children—each year. Until now, the search for an effective vaccine against the parasitic disease spread by mosquitoes has been fruitless. Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it is recommending the approval of the Mosquirix malaria vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline. The research on this vaccine began in 1987 and was earlier this year shown to be 50 percent effective in preventing malaria infections in the first year of Phase III clinical trials in children in three African countries.
Compared to the 95 percent efficacy of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, 50 percent may not sound like much, but a 2020 modeling study estimated that rolling out the vaccine in the areas with the higher prevalence of the illness could prevent 5.3 million cases and 24,000 deaths annually.
"This is a historic moment. The long-awaited malaria vaccine for children is a breakthrough for science, child health and malaria control," said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement. "Using this vaccine on top of existing tools to prevent malaria could save tens of thousands of young lives each year."
The malaria parasite enters the host's bloodstream through a mosquito bite. The vaccine prevents the parasite from infecting the liver, where it multiplies and from which it then reenters the bloodstream to cause disease by infecting red blood cells.
The even better news is that there are several promising malaria vaccines in development including an mRNA version by BioNTech, the German company that developed a highly effective mRNA COVID-19 vaccine in partnership with Pfizer. The company aims to begin clinical trials in 2022. Note that Mosquirix took more than 30 years to develop. If BioNTech's vaccine works, it could be ready in less than 5 years.

Kills more than 400K annually.
50% effective vaccine
Could save 24K annually?
Is this a 2+2=5 thing?
I presume that number is derived from the probability that not everyone exposed to malaria will get a vaccine. So it's probably a massaged estimate of "Kills 400,000 annually, 50% vaccine effectiveness applied to x% of the 400,000."
This is the kind of shit comment that makes me rarely visit the reason comments nowadays.
And yet here you are, visiting the reason comments.
I see you decided to bring a little shit comment of your own.
"Math is hard. That's why I avoid it."
Is reading no longer a thing in your neck?
Or is thinking your weak point?
"Is reading no longer a thing in your neck?"
I don't read through my neck. You must be a lower species.
"Or is thinking your weak point?"
I'd drop my CV but I don't want to break your foot.
"neck of the
woodsbrain" was the full phrase, but I mistakenly thought you'd understand.Anyone who thinks a CV is a substitute for thinking is obviously useless.
Missed the section of the sentence that said "rolling out the vaccine in the areas with the higher prevalence of the illness"?
There is no intention (in that analysis) to roll the vaccine out universally. Possibly because of cost but equally likely because of side-effects.
The annual prevention number makes it an estimate in perpetuity, not for a specific year in a roll out. If they're hitting a specific population section then the deaths/lives saved should be for that target population otherwise you end up implying a relationship that is not valid.
But then this Ron, a journolist that pretends to understand science when it's become increasingly clear he means "The Science" a modern equivalent of Lysenkoism.
Compared to the 95 percent efficacy of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, 50 percent may not sound like much
HAHAHAHAHAHAH, hee hee, hee, hoooooo...ohmygod...one sec...hehehe
Ron, I had no idea you were a comedian. I have to apologize for some of my criticisms.
Ron aka Miss Information
Came hear to laugh at the same.
* here*
Me too.
Ron, at this point, the 95% efficacy of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines is no longer tenable.
Ron is obviously the Loki of the Reason staff.
Vaccine efficacy.
If you think this will ever end once we're "fully vaccinated" you're wrong.
They need to reopen harder. Let it rip through the population, while the vaccine still has some positive effect. This trying to not let anyone die will never work.
Boosters and lockdowns as far as the eye can see.
The vaccine approaches 95% effective with booster shots every 11 days.
Depends on the actual goal there doesn't it. Habituating people to repressive total government control seems to be something that is working just fine.
The malaria vaccine provides temporary, limited protection for young children. And long-term safety remains an open question.
This seems more like a political gimmick (generating good press for some governments and the Gates foundation) than an actual breakthrough.
You'd think after 30 years they should know the long-term effects.
Well, you might jump to that conclusion. However, the vaccine had its first phase III trial in 2013, and given the populations they are testing it in, they have no usable data on long-term effects.
The mRNA thing is not a vaccine. And it sounds like this malaria injection is not a vaccine either. They are therapeutics that have some efficacy in staving off the worse effects of these illnesses.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying they don’t help a lot. But let’s stop calling them “vaccines.” It seems the new definition of vaccine is “any drug that you inject into your body to kill a virus or bacterium or parasite.” I’m not buying it.
They're ibuprofen for viruses.
Of course mRNA vaccines are vaccines.
Is this that talking point that the CDC changed their definition of “vaccine”? You know what often happens when new technologies come along — definitions of words get updated.
Funny stuff.
The definition of insurrection recently got updated.
They do indeed, and the quiet changing of a word that's been stable for... what, a century, during a time when the efficacy of a CDC-pushed vaccine is widely turning out to be... not as effective as they say it is, smells of politics. No, that's not right. It REEKS of politics.
Couple that with everything else the CDC has gotten wrong or lied about during this pandemic, and I'm sorry, I'm just not buying what the cigar chomping guy with the plaid leisure suit in the used-car parking lot of the CDC is selling.
Speaking of language, perhaps fauci becomes part of the lexicon like quisling has. A government official that falsely provides information to further government control.
“quiet changing of a word”
Yeah, they should hold a press conference about changing some wording on their website. Sheesh.
definitions of words get updated
New names get added to the list of dumbfucks all the time.
But let’s stop calling them “vaccines.” It seems the new definition of vaccine is “any drug that you inject into your body to kill a virus or bacterium or parasite.” I’m not buying it.
Been saying that about the flu shot that varies from 30% to 70% effective, year-over-year.
Not that it's not effective, but it's not 1 or 3 shots confers immunity 95% of the time for 10 yrs. or more.
Yes, it is: it is an artificial substance that elicits a protective immune response.
it is an artificial substance that elicits a protective immune response
That's virtually everything. Human blood, surgical-grade titanium, even a good number of placebo doses.
Malaria vaccine approved. Republicans hardest hit.
Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it is recommending the approval of the Mosquirix malaria vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline.
There we go. The WHO is wrong about everything, so the "vaccine" is bunk.
I'm just saying it's not approved.
Don't worry Brandybuck, sarcasmic's obviously not big into reading comprehension either.
Yeah, they’ll be throwing malaria parties for their kids, instead.
Right, let's continue to compare a disease with a 28% mortality rate across the broad population to one that has a >99% survival rate across most of the population, except those who are old, infirm or have poorly managed comorbidities.
This is why no one believes people who screech "Teh Scientism!". This is also why Democrats have now been scientifically proven to be the literal worst estimators of relative risk in the solar system.
Republicans who are refusing to get the COVID vaccine because they somehow think it owns the libs are being partisan morons, cutting off their own nose to spite the line’ faces. Just dumb.
Yes, it's apples to oranges. But the anti-vaxx movement is not just about COVID vaccines. It a movement that comes from the LEFT and predates the pandemic by a couple of decades. But it was a convenient movement for hyper-partisan Republicans to latch on to.
COVID-19 remains a virus that has killed over 600,000 Americans. Mostly the old and those with comorbidities. But it also affects those outside those groups. My friend who is thirty and perfectly healthy and in good shape ended up in the hospital. There are numerous cases of young healthy people in good shape landing in the hospital and dying.
And it's not just a case of dying or not. It's not whether you get the sniffles or your die, there's a huge range in between. That's the problem with the ICU bed shortage, they're all full of intubated patients battling this disease. So dismiss them is bullshit. And then there are cases where people are in the hospital for MONTHS, yet aren't counted as "dead". But you just dismiss them.
This is why we take the vaccine. The risk of the vaccines is miniscule compared to the risk of the disease. Several orders of magnitude difference. It's the Republicans who are the literal worst estimators of relative risk in the solar system, who would refuse a vaccine because they think it's more dangerous than the disease.
And these Republicans are not extending this sentiment to all other vaccines (remember, the anti-vaxx movement started out in the Hollywood Left). Now they're refusing to vaccinate their children against rubella and pertussis. Fuck, we had the latter all but eliminated in the United State, now it's coming back. Children die of pertussis, even if they don't it's one of the most painful childhood diseases imaginable. And yet some Republicans won't vaccinate their children so that they can own the libs.
Perfect
As a parasitic infection, I was not under the impression that malaria was contagious between people. But I could be wrong.
Malaria is a parasite which requires two hosts. The mosquito and the human. The mosquito transmits the parasite to the human. They also acquire the parasite from the human host.
Eradication efforts which have been successful in parts of the world have focused on eliminating the mosquito vector. This has not worked everywhere as the mosquitos are more difficult to eradicate in some environments and have developed more resistance to insecticides.
So this is a welcome advancement. A vaccine with even 50% protection is a great achievement in combatting this disease.
What are the politics behind this new medicine? That's what matters.
Finally, you're being honest about your motivations.
You’re catching on!
Everyone should get it! Regardless of your proximity to the disease!
The Gates Foundation created it. That's why it's being pushed.
We need to know who GlaxoSmithKline voted for before we accept this vaccine! They're could be microchips in it designed to turn people into Democrats!
In other news, Sweden and Denmark just blocked the Moderna vaccine for anyone born after 1991 due to side effects.
Let that sink in.
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
Something is rotten in the state of Nigeria. Denmark not so much in this case.
Oh you were discussing Shakespeare.
“The dead man’s knell
Is there scarce asked for who, and good men’s lives
Expire before the flowers in their caps
Dying or ere they sicken.”
From Macbeth.

Los Angeles seems to have a different opinion:
https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-business-los-angeles-health-57e9f1de7f9636f0567b00f7f551e41e
“LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles leaders on Wednesday approved one of the nation’s strictest vaccine mandates — a sweeping measure that requires the shots for everyone entering bars, restaurants, nail salons, gyms or even a Lakers game.”
To be fair, Swedes and Danes probably are science denying, Q-anon, conservative monsters compared to the LA city council.
Danes are well known Trumpistas or some such thing.
Three out of four of us are not vaccinated from the swine flu.
Can public establishments afford to lose 75% of their customers?
https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/sweden-pauses-use-moderna-covid-vaccine-cites-rare-side-effects-2021-10-06/
They're banning it over a rare side effect that resolves itself.
I fail to see that as a UGE deal.
From the same Reuters article:
“The Swedish health agency said it would pause using the shot for people born in 1991 and later as data pointed to an increase of myocarditis and pericarditis among youths and young adults that had been vaccinated. Those conditions involve an inflammation of the heart or its lining.
‘The connection is especially clear when it comes to Moderna's vaccine Spikevax, especially after the second dose,’ the health agency said, adding the risk of being affected was very small.”
Apparently the Swedes disagree with you.
Did you read past the part you bolded? Looks like precautionary principle more than real danger.
They are pausing the vaccine for young people who are not much at risk from COVID.
The risk of serious COVID infection in that population is also very small. That's why a small risk of side effects from the vaccine is significant in that population.
You left out that all the articles say the side effects are very rare, and they are pausing for a month until a study is finished.
How do you define rare? Less than 1%?
Use any standard you like, the rarity meets it.
You won't listen to what American scientists say, but you will do what "socialist" Sweden and Denmark say? My God, next you'll be on board with Stalin's Lysenkoism!
Do you seriously not think that Fauci and the lot of them are engaged in Lysenkoism? COVID science has been weaponized in the US. It is being used to undermine the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th amendments.
The Swedes and Danes are looking at the science because the issue is not fraught with political implications for them. They don't have a pesky Bill of Rights impeding their government.
China PCR Purchases Spiked in Months Before First Known Covid Cases
"The Chinese province that was the initial epicenter of the Covid-19 outbreak made significant purchases of equipment used to test for infectious diseases months before Beijing notified international authorities of the emergence of a new coronavirus, according to research by a cybersecurity company.
The province’s purchase of polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, testing equipment, which allows scientists to amplify DNA samples to test for infectious disease or other genetic material, shot upward in 2019, with most of the increase coming in the second half of the year, the Australian-U.S. firm Internet 2.0 found.
Hubei province is home to Wuhan, the large Chinese city where the first known cases of the virus emerged. The World Health Organization reported that its China Country Office was informed on Dec. 31, 2019, that cases of pneumonia from an unknown cause had been detected in the city."
But ignore all that folks. It came from a bowl of bat soup and if you don't believe that you're racist.
Oh yeah, I saw that news a week ago, and I'm amazed at how generally quietly that story has rolled along.
Honestly, I'm pleasantly surprised it's on Bloomberg.
It’s a coincidence.
Purely by accident I'm sure. The temp editor didn't know he was supposed to clear it with the CCP political officer first.
So until it really gets approved, not just recommended for approval, we need to ship a gazillion "cloth face coverings" to Africa?
Lock tropical regions down, 6 ft social distancing, no large gatherings, and 100% vaccination rate for the planet.
"but you can't compare Malaria to COVID"
Someone did above.
The World Finally Has a Malaria Vaccine
Almost makes you think they've been working on this for a good long while.
Weird how the US and most of the Western World effectively 'eradicated' malaria decades ago without a vaccine. Almost like vaccines aren't a magic wand.
Also worth noting that malaria is a single-celled parasite that, while is may or may not adapt quicker than a virus (especially one who shall not be named) cannot mutate as quickly.
Nothing particularly weird about it: DDT, geography, and massive environmental destruction did the job. Those don't work in Africa, and not for lack of trying.
Whoosh!
No. The real solution is windows and sick leave. Malaria cannot live in mosquitos. It can ONLY transmit if an infected person is bitten by a mosquito and then a healthy person is bitten by the same mosquito.
If you can give people sick leave so that they stay home when ill, and give them windows so they are not bitten while sick, then you get the replacement cycle of malaria below 1. The incidence drops precipitously, eventually dying out.
I wonder if that scientist I used to see at the Libertarian Book Club's anarchist forums was involved. He's the only malaria researcher I knew. It was funny when I saw his name on a paper and only then found out he was a scientist. Happens to me sometimes when someone I know in one context turns up in another I'm interested in.
What a joke. Malaria was almost eradicated in the late 60's. Then the EPA was formed. The new head of it was quoted as saying "If we can ban DDT, we can ban anything." They took a BS study that was turned into a book by Rachael Carson about DDT weakening the shells of bird eggs. This study was later discredited but, that was swept under the rug in the name of global environmentalism. DDT was banned and Malaria made a come back along with several other mosquito borne diseases.
^this
DDT raised life expectancies significantly. At least part of the rise in the incidence of cancers is attributable to people living long enough to get cancer. Regardless, the idea that 1st world countries can dictate that there are no acceptable trade-offs in health outcomes is elitist and evil (and very Progressive).
Environmentalists were instrumental in the justifiable campaign against leaded gas and succeeded in eliminating its use. Convinced that they and they alone saved the world from an existential crisis, they have been chasing the dragon for another fix ever since. Their environmental disaster fan-fiction was a perfect fit for the rising Progressives. And here we are.
They started spraying DDT again in the early 2000's.
your information always
good keep doing
"the 95 percent efficacy of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines"
what the actual fuck are you smoking? this is just dishonest reporting at this point. its October of 2021 for crimeny's sake. we know that its not that high, especially at preventing infection. this kind of shit makes you look really bad
I remember when you told us the covid vaccines were 100% effective against hospitalization and death. How wrong you were. Never a retraction or apology.
