Brickbat: No Surfing!

A man charged with civil disorder and assaulting, resisting or impeding a law enforcement officer during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol may be returned to jail for violating the terms of his bond by accessing the Internet. Prosecutors say Douglas Jensen admitted watching MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell's Cyber Symposium that argued that the 2020 election was stolen.

Authorities are allowed to lie to accused, not the other way around. But, really, it's not the continuing wrongthink so much as hiding the wrongthink that hurts prosecutors the most.

It’s like they line in a vacuum and don’t realize that most jobs these days require accessing the Internet. Most white collar jobs use cloud-based software like Office 365 and most blue collar jobs also use one or more mobile apps for work orders and such. Why not just say he’s not allowed to have a job?
Besides, aren’t they in essence just demanding a change in beliefs? He could just as easily be discussing ideas with a family member or even mulling things over in his head. Since when is merely believing something a crime even in the absence of any action?
Well, to be fair, he's not being punished for the wrong-think. He's still being punished for "civil disorder and assaulting, resisting or impeding a law enforcement officer"... And his jail-house/court false "for show" conversion to right-think doesn't help his case.
But you're right, the "smell test" stinks. We can revoke your parole or your bond for using scary "high tech" internet, but would they do that for having the wrong discussions? Reading the wrong newspaper or book? Enough with this crap of making the "high tech" internet be the scary boogeyman!
" but would they do that for having the wrong discussions? Reading the wrong newspaper or book?"
Why not? They can revoke a bond for associating with the wrong people.
Well, yes! You're absolutely correct! But only if they catch you! (Find a middleman to smuggle your letters to and from "wrong" friends, and various kinds of "samizdat" as well, then, I guess. Read them with a flashlight under your covers at night.).

Kinda like with election fraud concerns and off-script Covid conversations then, huh.
And BTW, unless you have a sarcasmic-level education, absolutely everyone knows what samizdat is. It's not arcane knowledge that requires an explanation and a wikipedia link.
More arcane knowledge for MarxistMammaryBahnFuhrer VERY specifically!

Punished? This is pre-trial!!
"The process is the punishment". Jailed before trial, jailed after trial? Your hopes for acquittal, or a short sentence, are just about the only real differences.
We can revoke your parole or your bond for using scary “high tech” internet, but would they do that for having the wrong discussions? Reading the wrong newspaper or book? Enough with this crap of making the “high tech” internet be the scary boogeyman!
Especially with the movement in other circles of government to effectively codify internet access as a fundamental human right. "It's essential to your survival unless you use it to think the wrong things, then we must prevent you from having it."
Maybe it’s time we stop joking about “wrongthink” and start taking this evil shit seriously in this country.
Word for word from “The Government’s Motion to Revoke Defendants Pre-Trial Release”:
A mere thirty days after his release from the D.C. Jail, defendant Douglas Jensen was found alone, in his garage, using a WiFi-connected iPhone to stream news from Rumble.1 When confronted about this obvious violation of his release conditions, defendant provided his Pretrial Services Officer with one excuse after another. First, he claimed that the phone belonged to his daughter. Jensen’s daughter, however, later told Pretrial Services that she had gotten a new phone almost three weeks ago. Then, Jensen claimed that his wife – the same individual who swore, under oath, to notify the Court immediately if Jensen violates a condition of release – facilitated his violation by leaving the news on for him when she left for work in the morning. Finally, Jensen claimed not to know the password to the iPhone, only to later enter the password for his Pretrial Services Officer.
This is what the justice system looks like in a town where 92% of the vote went to Biden/Harris.
Then, Jensen claimed that his wife – the same individual who swore, under oath, to notify the Court immediately if Jensen violates a condition of release – facilitated his violation by leaving the news on for him when she left for work in the morning.
Sounds like they're building a case for criminal facilitation of violating parole.
At that point, the officer should have been killed for entering without a search warrant.
There’s no conviction, no probation supervision ordered. Pre-trial bond is limited to checking that a defendant hasn’t fled the jurisdiction by knocking on the door or calling his landline.
The motion should have explained the unconstitutionally of the restriction.
Could, not should.
Go fuck yourself, G-man.
Geez, he was only consuming the same jihadi porn that inspired him to commit violence. I don't get it!
Sad but true. The below is relevant.
We aren’t merely just self-righteous by genetic programming; we are also prone to making up lies about our “tribal enemies”, in order to justify attacking them! Not to make you retch, but please recall your history. And not to pick on Christians too much; this is just the history that I am most familiar with. Dark-ages Christians spread horrible lies about “witches” (pre-Christian Wiccans, pagans, etc.) in order to justify witch-burnings, witch-drownings, etc. And the same with rumors about Jews and (ugh!) drinking the blood of Christian babies, etc. (Sorry I had to go there).
This, too, may be at least somewhat genetically programmed. See https://thehill.com/changing-america/respect/equality/566982-terrifying-new-study-says-our-conspiracy-theory-epidemic and (same thing) https://www.salon.com/2021/08/08/a-terrifying-new-theory-fake-news-and-conspiracy-theories-as-an-evolutionary-strategy/
A terrifying new theory: Fake news and conspiracy theories as an evolutionary strategy.
Social scientist Michael Bang Petersen on why people believe outrageous lies — as a tool in violent group conflict.
So we instinctively hold fast to the lies that we WANT to believe, to mark our tribal allegiances! And to pre-justify “my tribe’s violence GOOD, and YOUR tribe’s violence BAD!” This is next to impossible to “educate away”, since it is so primordial. It’s not a matter of FACTS; it is FAR more so, a matter of tribal alliances and allegiances, and political (and even physical, in times of war) survival.
The true nature of reality has very-very little to do with short-term political success. That’s what the above-cited article is all about! Short-term political success has MUCH more to do with signaling that “I am part of OUR tribe! I hold ALL of the wacky beliefs that OUR tribe holds, whether they are true, or not! My tribe’s violence GOOD; THEIR tribe’s violence is BAD! So when our tribal chieftain is looking to whack the bad guys with a stick… Remember! I am one of the GOOD guys! I go with the untruths of OUR tribe, NOT those of the BAD tribe!”
People like you are the real problem.
I don't even own a communication device that can't access the internet. TV, phone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer . . . even the radio in my car.

Timmy in well. GPS pin attached. Send help.
This is incredibly fucked up and evil. He's charged with trespassing basically. No crime involving the internet is alleged. How is this possibly justifiable? It's legal to believe Qanon nonsense. It's legal to think the election was stolen. These people are being punished primarily for their thoughts and beliefs. If it was any kind of left-leaning protest almost everyone would have gotten a fine and some community service (if anything) and it would all be forgotten.
"It’s legal to believe Qanon nonsense. It’s legal to think the election was stolen."
They're working on that; so far the government can only pressure social media sites into banning you for wrong search, but as Biden has often said, "This is just the beginning."
PS: "These people are being punished primarily for their thoughts and beliefs.'
Where government is concerned, thoughts and beliefs matter. There is a correct one and a lot of wrong ones.
pretty obvious the election was stolen.
Even if not literally stolen by rigging votes, effectively stolen by people willing to persecute dissenters and violate oaths to defend and uphold the Constitution.
absolutely. I'll take rigged for $2000 also, Alex (or Mayim)
Oh, I see its been downgraded to a riot from an insurrection now.
