COVID Diaries NYC
The HBO documentary provides plenty of examples of people conflating moral and medical judgments.

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, recently described a psychological experiment that found "moral judgments impact perceived risks from COVID-19 exposure." The HBO documentary COVID Diaries NYC, which assembles contributions from five young filmmakers, provides further evidence to support that hypothesis.
Late one night, 21-year-old Marcial Pilataxi is hanging out on a Manhattan street with a few friends when they are accosted by an angry, inebriated cyclist. After stopping and throwing his bicycle down in disgust, he berates them for congregating without face masks, thereby endangering their grandmothers.
The rant is comical, since biking while intoxicated is hardly a model of safe behavior and the drunk guy is not wearing a mask either. But Pilataxi takes the admonition to heart and later tearfully apologizes to his grandmother at the apartment they share for not thinking of her welfare. He promises to stop going out with his friends.
Meanwhile, COVID Diaries NYC treats the protests provoked by George Floyd's death reverently. Those demonstrations attracted large groups of frequently unmasked people who gathered in close proximity for extended periods of time while shouting slogans—all factors that increase the risk of virus transmission.
A more subtle conflation of moral and medical judgments, a phenomenon prevalent during the COVID-19 crisis, is apparent in 16-year-old Shane Fleming's video diary. His father, a restaurant manager, expresses amazement at the complete shutdown of both indoor and outdoor dining. Those activities were deemed "nonessential," if not utterly frivolous, by the same politicians who praised the protests.

"examples of people conflating moral and medical judgments"
OK, I mean yeah, I suppose some people might do that.
But we Koch / Reason libertarians never would. Our insistence on unlimited, unrestricted immigration during a pandemic is 100% based on science.

All tyrants believe themselves to be righteous in their cause, even when they know that their actions are morally abhorrent. I have seen this dynamic on bold display during the covid mandates and the vaccine passports initiatives. Consider for a moment that 99.7% of the population is under no legitimate threat from the covid virus; they will not die from it, and in the vast majority of cases they will recover quickly from it. Yet the covid cult consistently argues that people who refuse the mandates, the lockdowns and the vaccines are putting others at risk, which is why we need to be “forced” to submit.
Most of them know according to the data that covid is not a threat, but the narrative gives them an opportunity to apply power through “moral judgment”, and so they lie, and they continue to lie about the data until they think the lie will be accepted as reality. This is a common aspect of most cults and of fundamentalist religions that have gone astray – The habit of adherents to value lies over facts and evidence not because they are trying to protect their faith, but because it affords them the chance to feel pious and superior to those they are determined to harm.
So the casus belli to transform the current western socialism into fascism is germphobia. The homeless folks campaign didn't work out. Climate change didn’t either. Hard to buy into that when Kerry is flying a private jet all over the place and Obama buys a near sea level mansion. CRT is flopping too. But this flung pile of stinkyness might grow legs.
In fairness, some people called this years ago. A series of articles about the Pink Police State at the Federalist springs to mind, which suggests the modern Foucauldian biopolitics is increasingly based on a safe/healthy vs. unsafe/unhealthy distinction.
Are they really lying if they believe their own bull?
Yes. You are lying to yourself.
No, but (and this is a pretty big generalization) I think in many cases people know that what they are saying is not true, but believe that some kind of "noble lies" are necessary to get people to do the "right" things.
Also, that's a moral conflation too. Lying is bad because it's false and immoral because it is purposefully deceptive, but the falseness of it is essential and in a practical way much more important.
We are very moralizing and tend to focus on the deception part, increasingly to the point of excluding the simple fact that it's false.
So, lying or just plain wrong doesn't actually matter that much oftentimes. If some actor is always wrong or always lying I still doubt their judgment all the same.
The habit of adherents to value lies over facts and evidence not because they are trying to protect their faith, but because it affords them the chance to feel pious and superior to those they are determined to harm.
The subject was COVID and now you're off on a tangent about people who still believe Trump won the election? Stay on topic, dude.
Hey, there's something in the article about regime dick sucker, sarcasmic:
"Furthermore, the things they fear often revolve around their own narcissism and are of their own making. They fear failure, but they rarely work hard enough to succeed. They fear exposure, but only because they constantly lie. They fear conflict, but only because they are weak in body and character. They fear death, because they believe in nothing greater than themselves. They clamor for dominance of their surroundings because they wrongly believe that they can cheat fate and the consequences of their own terrible choices."
Look in the mirror dude. That's you and your QAnon buddies.
You can keep lying to yourself, but you can't keep truth from burrowing into your nervous system and furthering your descent
"For weak and ignorant people, subservience is a gift instead of a curse. They believe that a cage is meant to be gilded, not escaped from, and anyone that seeks escape must be crazy or dangerous. If free people exist then the slaves are forced to question their own condition and their own compliance, so everyone must be enslaved to remove any and all doubt from society. The hive mind is placed above all else."
If believing everyone who rejects your conspiracy theories is ignorant and subservient makes you feel superior, then by all means feel that way. Doesn't make you any less stupid or wrong.
It is the government's responsibility to make others do what they feel they should do so they can feel better about themselves.
I think that about covers it.
But Pilataxi takes the admonition to heart and later tearfully apologizes to his grandmother at the apartment they share for not thinking of her welfare.
I hope his grandmother smacked him across the head and told him to man the hell up.
I just wish these insensitive filmmakers would analyze their privilege of having a grandmother to kill. Is it too much to ask to not rub it in the faces of us with pre-expired grandparents? I WISH I could kill them with Covid. These people need to check themselves.
