3 Unvaccinated Florida Teachers Died, the Media Rushed To Blame Ron DeSantis' Mask Ban
DeSantis was wrong to restrict options for COVID control in Florida schools, but the push to blame mask bans is misdirection.

These last 24 hours were a time of tragedy in Broward County, Florida, where four public school teachers all died from COVID-19. The local CBS affiliate notes that these deaths come at a moment of heightened tension between Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and Broward County's school board, which has opted to defy the governor's ban on school mask mandates.
Broward's decision to keep its mask mandate despite the governor's orders was implicitly celebrated in the news article as an obvious move given these deaths, with the Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco saying she felt "relief." CNN similarly used the news hook to focus on DeSantis' mask prohibition. Jen Perelman, a local progressive political activist, tweeted: "I stand with our Broward County school board in defiance of Governor DeSantis. As a local resident with my youngest in HS, school is where our children should be safest. 4 teachers have died from COVID just this week. This is life & death, not a political game. Mask Up."
A casual consumer of this news might come away with the distinct impression that the teachers caught COVID-19 from their maskless students. But school hasn't actually started yet in Broward, so the teachers probably did not contract the disease in their classrooms. Indeed, Fusco noted that they were on summer break. Furthermore, at least three of the four teachers were unvaccinated (the status of the fourth is unknown). CBS saved this detail for the very last sentence of its story; CNN noted it upfront but quickly moved on to discuss masks.
This is shameful misdirection. The media want to pillory DeSantis for banning mask mandates in schools, and to associate this decision with the deaths of teachers. But the lack of vaccination is the more important underlying factor here.
The governor made vaccines available to all teachers in the state as far back as the beginning of March. But in addition to prohibiting mask requirements in schools, DeSantis has also made it very difficult for both government agencies and private businesses to require vaccination. That's the aspect of this story for which DeSantis deserves criticism: His COVID-19 declarations get in the way of individual public schools or districts requiring teachers to get vaccinated as a condition of employment. Yet the mainstream media and many Democratic legislators often appear fixated on masks and mask mandates—even though vaccination is by far a more effective tool for fighting the pandemic.
Instead of governors dictating to schools what policies they are permitted to implement, state governments should adopt broad school choice measures so that families can pick a school that matches their level of risk tolerance as well as giving schools latitude to make their own choices about health and safety measures. Parents who prefer a fully vaccinated (or regularly tested) teaching staff could make that a priority in choosing a school. And teachers and families who prefer not to get vaccinated could select schools where everyone knows and accepts the risks associated with that choice. If a public school wishes to require masks, then parents should be able to enroll their kids elsewhere. The Arkansas legislature is already considering such a proposal.
Meanwhile, the deaths of several unvaccinated teachers should not be cited in favor of a return to ceaseless mandatory masking. Instead, we should focus on letting schools and families have the tools and options they need to stay safe and healthy.

My first thought was "Why weren't they vaccinated?"
Their union is radical about GET VACCINATED!!!!, yet they did not care enough to go get a free shot. Can we just blame the union leaders for not leading well enough?
The governor did not prohibit vaccines or masks.
Right but he didn't MANDATE that they get The Jab, which is the real thing to criticize DeSantis for.

WHY? Didjya forget that al three of the injectioin manufacturers have plainly stated that their injectioins do not PREVENT transmission to others, nor do they PREVENT anyone from contracting the disaase, but they MAY reduce severity of symptoms to some degree.
Stack this pile of blocks up against the other pile.. the deaths, permanehnt genetic altaraion, blood clots, stroke, homoone imbalances, heart issue,s long term increase iin susceptibility to things like Alzheimers, Parkinsons, etc...... and they expect me to be eager to get poked with those odds stacked agasint me? No thanks. I'll stand firm on trusting the life-decisions I make every day keeping my body's natural immunity strong enough to repulse THIS virus, as it has successfully repulsed LL the other nasty diseases that were "going to kill us all, or at least most of us" over the past five decades.
Ad please remember, that Governor DeSantis does NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY to mandate anyone takingthat injection. Remember, it is not "approved" ut only allowed to be administerd under n Emergency Ise Authorisation". That plops it squarely into the "experimental drug" category, and NO ONE can lawfully MANDATE that I or anyone else take the thing.
I am NOT "vaccine hesitant". I am a well informed, well educated, nowledgable individual who has throughly researched these injections and made a WELL INFORMED DeciSION to just say NOPE. Not me. READ the ingredient list of those shots, research what EACH item listed is, how it works, and why. THEN come back and tell me I MUST take that poke in my arm. I will STILL stand solidly and say NOPE. YOU roll up YOUR sleeve as you wish. I will not. I am enjoying my life far too well to willingly and deliberately expose it to the threat this gene-altering therapy brings along with it.
Preventing disease automatically prevents transmission.
You are a fool of the highest order.

And what condition were these teachers in? And what part did the alleged SARS-CoV2 virus play in their deaths?
Who doesn't know that the old saying "it was the final straw" or "that was the last straw" means the final straw WAS NOT THE KILLER BLOW, but simple the teeny tiny last little bit.
We need a LOT more info before we can decide anything about anything here!
They’ve already retracted the 4 number to 3, and you’re right about any real conclusion being made from any of this due to the omission of details (like the size of the school district, pre-existing health issues, the teachers ages, etc).
At this point, since I’m not privy to the actual medical records, I don’t put a lot of stock in these news stories. They’re clearly agenda driven, typical modern propaganda, and anything contrary to the narrative is considered “misinformation”.
One of the dead educators reportedly was going to get vaccinated soon - she was waiting for her doctor to clear her to get the shot. That suggests she had health issues - no healthy adult has needed to check with their primary care physician before getting jabbed.
And what of the Alien spacecraft seen over the moon at the time of their death?
And what about the sightings of bigfoot in the north?
"And what condition were these teachers in? And what part did the alleged SARS-CoV2 virus play in their deaths?" - Moron
So many moronic quesitons.
The teachers in question most definitely should've been vaccinated, but DeSantis is also to blame for not requiring people to wear masks, either. His way of handling Covid-19 has been absolutely and totally deplorable. This guy is a total disgrace!

DeSantis for President 2024!
School hasn’t begun in Broward yet, also, it’s 4 teachers died , one was completely vaccinated. This is lying by omission. They want you to get the jab so they tell you only about the three that weren’t vaccinated. Media is manipulating! only putting out info to throw you in a panic. Don’t fall for it! Do your research!
You are free to wear a mask any time you want.

and I am free to REFUSE to slap one of those nappies accross my mug, too. I was kept out of a facility this evening because I refused to slap one on. I did not care one bit. Far better to still be healthy in thirty years and not get where my prefernce would lead me this evening than to compromise my physical well-being long term in favour of the short term slight benefit I was denied. MY standards. YOU use the ones YOU prefer. But DO NOT stand there and tell me what I MUST do. I will stand here both feet firmly planted upon the floor and say NOPE.
A marvellous response! And for Soave to even suggest that deSantis is in any way responsible indicates that he prefers others to guide him through life. We all have brains and we all should protect our own health. Were those teachers looking out for their own immunity? Some questions here…and Soave is wrong as usual.
The fact that an awful of people are not doing that, however, is a big part of why we're still in the middle of this goddamned pandemic. So is the high vaccine refusal rate in the the United States, as a whole.

Meanwhile in the UK 54% of the delta deaths are 'fully' vaccinated.

There's concerning data out of Israel as well.
Israel is providing booster shots for everybody in that country. They make it mandatory for everybody, just as they make it mandatory for both guys and gals to serve in the Army as soon as they turn 18.

Uttar Pradesh on Ivermectin: Population 240 Million [4.9% fully vaccinated]
COVID Daily Cases: 26
COVID Daily Deaths: 3
The United States off Ivermectin: Population 331 Million [50.5% fully vaccinated]
COVID Daily Cases: 127,108
COVID Daily Deaths: 574
Let us look at other Ivermectin using areas of India with numbers from August 5, 2021, compiled by the JHU CSSE:
Delhi on Ivermectin: Population 31 Million [15% fully vaccinated]
COVID Daily Cases: 61
COVID Daily Deaths: 2
Uttarakhand on Ivermectin: Population 11.4 Million [15% fully vaccinated]
COVID Daily Cases: 24
COVID Daily Deaths: 0
Now let us look at an area of India that rejected Ivermectin.
Tamil Nadu announced they would reject Ivermectin and instead follow the dubious USA-style guidance of using Remdesivir. Knowing this, you might expect their numbers to be closer to the US, with more cases and more deaths. You would be correct. Tamil Nadu went on to lead India in COVID-19 cases.
Tamil Nadu continues to suffer for its choice to reject Ivermectin. As a result, the Delta variant continues to ravage their citizens while it was virtually wiped out in the Ivermectin-using states. Likewise, in the United States, without Ivermectin, both the vaccinated and unvaccinated continue to spread the Delta variant like wildfire.
Tamil Nadu off Ivermectin: Population 78.8 Million [6.9% fully vaccinated]
COVID Daily Cases: 1,997
COVID Daily Deaths: 33
/compares contrasts hospitalizations between UK and US
/checks share of vaccinated adults
Yeah, this isn't at all concerning. It's the same people being hospitalized as during prior waves. Vaccination is a reinforcement to natural defenses, not a replacement; in the end your body still has to do the work. And if your immune system sucks then no volume of vaccines will help.
Which gets me to my bitch: where's the new treatments? We should have TheraCOV by now, but we're still living off infusion-based treatments and off-label antiparasitics. Get on that, biotech.
The virus has never been reasonably concerning, at least not since April 2020.
What's concerning is the totalitarianism and fanatical, fear based (and stoking) groupthink.
I agree, groupthink is the most concerning issue we're dealing with. It is like a mass hysteria, moral panic, on steroids and it leads people to do and go along with crazy, crazy things.
Like refusing to get vaccinated.
You are referring to the “vaccine” that isn’t really a vaccine, with deadly side effects, that relieves manufacturers of all liability for harmful side effects, with declining efficacy and booster shots stretching to infinity?
The one that may (or may not, but will go with possibly) reduce severity of a virus that the average healthy person is 99.99% in no danger from without the vaccine.
I'm vaccinated. There are reasons to be a skeptic. It's not insanity. Mrna therapies have no long term track record. They are brand new and, technically, haven't even been approved yet. I think we should allow children (who don't suffer much or die from COVID) to escape the unknown consequences of the vaccine. Just in case.
how many booster shots are you going to get before you realize the vaccines are failing?
Right. IF the injectioins worked as gummit now claim they are (falsely) then WHY do they now mandate masks> IF the vaccine WORKED masks would e useless, so don't bother with them. If MASKS worked the way they say they do, the SHOTS would be useless. Logic, anyone? IF yuor belt holds yer britches up why bother with suspenders? If the suspenders do the job, WHY bother with the belt? But to demand I wear BOTH? Someone has their hand in my money poke. My guess it is the same guy who took out a patent for the injection technology that was developed back in July or so of 2019. IIf I need to remind yuo that the virus leaked or was releaded from the WUhan Viral Lab in oOctobe/November that same year, than yuo have proven yourself to be part of the problem, and complicit in treason.
"Like refusing to get vaccinated"
None of your business, asshole.
Not quite. I have madea well-informed decision to NOT take the thing. If you want to call that "refusing", fine. I'm still not gonna take it. How much medical biology have YOU had at university level? What youve read in the lame stream media these past two years?
You're damned right!
One of my nephews, an Emergency Room physician who works in the Emergency room of St. Luke's Hospital down in New Bedford, MA, which is the second largest hospital in that south coastal city, has seen tons of Covid-19 cases, and not a single one of these people who've ended up in the overcrowded Emergency room of St. Luke's Hospital has been vaccinated. Moreover, many of these patients are regretting not being vaccinated way too late in the game.
On a happier, more optimistic note, however, my nephew has not seen a single vaccinated person come down with Covid-19, or at least end up in the hospital.
Your (likely made up) anecdotal evidence is talking about the filtered environment of a hospital, where the population is heavily skewed in favor of sick people with all sorts of conditions.
What you are saying is therefore without merit with regards to the general population where 99+% dont have to worry about the wuflu.
That's why group thinking can be quite dangerous, at times.
Tell the democrats. Also, learn English.
there already exist numberous EFFECTIVE treatments and prevention measures that are well proven as safe, and effective (and, by the buy cheap, which is why they have alll been mocked, outlawed, cancelled, banned, and otherwise put out of reach) that COULD andT us all maked and poked... despite the clear FACTS that neither are efff=ective in preventing contagion, either inbound or outbound, from any given individual.
That's because they're not treatments for Covid-19 at all. They're just as dangerous and deadly as the Covid-19 virus.

54% of what? 10? What's the average age? 80? How many comorbidities? 2? 3?
402/742 deaths. The 2x vax cohort is 25536:21427 for under 50:over 50. No comorbidity data. CFR for 2x vac is 402/47008 or 0.85% while the CFR for unvaxed is 253/151054 or 0.17%. Meaning unvaxxed are 5x less likey to die from delta than 2x vax
The CFR of the flu is 15% if you just count confirmed cases.
From other articles I've read, it sounds like the vaccine immunity is waning, quickly. We don't have comorbidity data, I wonder if it is the same people that have been most at risk the entire time, obese, old, multiple comorbidities, etc.
If what you say is true about unvaxxed being less likely to die than vax, I think it shows they have assessed the risk very well and are taking the necessary precautions to protect themselves.
There's a reason why they're about to recommend boosters for those groups.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-19-vaccine-booster-dose-for-immunocompromised-endorsed-by-cdc-advisers-11628878044
The neurosis the CDC and a good portion of the pop surrounding community spread is going to end up being as much of an anchor as vaccine resistance.
I read that in Israel, the booster shots aren't working for those vulnerable populations.
I'm sure many people reluctantly got the jab in the first place, I wonder how many of them will get boosters.
Like I said, if your immune system sucks then no volume of vaccines will help. Unfortunately, those people aren't preventable deaths. It's ludicrous to upend society to protect them; they should be stocking up on real masks and limiting their time in broader society.
We all have to die of something. This is just one more something.
Oh, come on now! More people have become seriously ill, been hospitalized, intubated, and actually died of Covid-19 who have not been vaccinated. Stop kidding yourself.
Of or with?
What you're missing is that the vaccination rate in the UK is something like 83%, which means that vaccinated people far outnumber unvaccinated ones (by over 4.88:1). So even if full vaccination resulted in NO reduction at all in the odds of you dying from Covid then, all other things being equal, you'd expect to see ~83% of all Delta variant deaths being fully-vaccinated patients. But you don't see that, nor anything even remotely close to that. The number you cite indicates an overall ratio of vaccinated:unvaccinated deaths of about 1.17:1....or about 76% less than what you'd see if the vaccines weren't offering any reduction in the likelihood of death from Covid.
In other words, the data you cite does NOT mean what you're suggesting it means. It means quite the opposite, actually.
Oops...I cited the wrong vaccination rate for the UK. First off, the full-vaccination rate for the UK is actually only about 60%. And even the total vaccination (which includes partially vaccinated) rate is only ~70%. So the fully-vaccinated:all-others ratio is really only 1.5:1. But even with that the suggestion that the data cited shows that those who are vaccinated are more (or even as) likely to die due to Delta infection than those who are unvaccinated is wrong.
Try it this way:
The UNvaccinated account for 30% of the population of the UK, but they account for ~68% of the Delta deaths among those under 50 years of age, and just over 30% of those 50 and over (the group where comorbidities and other factors become more important). But there's more. That unvaccinated 30% of the population also account for the following shares of these categories:
All Delta cases: 50%
Cases with an emergency care visit: 61%
Cases where presentation to emergency care resulted in overnight
inpatient admission: 57%
So, again...your 54% figure isn't saying what you seem to think it's saying.
Now we have to ask died from or died with. I'm betting at least one of the teachers committed suicide, 2 of them are 1000 lbs with diabetes, and the 4th was probably a traffic accident. 4 people in the same county dying of the wuflu in one week is sketchy at best
Also keep in mind that in the US it's entirely possible to "die from Covid" even if you never had COVID-19. In fact, it's not only possible but financially incentivized for doctors to list a death as "probable COVID-19" even if they never even tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 using hypersensitive PCR tests, let alone actually had COVID-19.
Has anyone looked into it to see if a union meeting was the superspreader?
Democrat approved activities don’t spread COVID. This is a very woke virus.
For those of us who have mastered the trick of walking and chewing gum at the same time, masks *and* vaccines provide more overall protection than either separately.
I'm supes proud of you. You are roughly in line with my 6 year old. By 9, my kids were able to do even basic cost/benefit risk analysis.
Overt with the KO
Humblebrag about driving 25mph in the fast lane while you're at it.
Masks are always ineffective. Do you have any other superstitious totems you use to keep the virus at bay? Maybe something to balance your bodily humors?
On the contrary, mask mandates undercut vaccinations (which have a strong protection) and replaces them with a paltry protection.
Actions speak louder than words, and the actions that are coming from the left are very clear and very loud. WE DON'T TRUST THE VACCINE. IT DOESN'T WORK.
If you trusted it, then we wouldn't need mask mandates, testing, and hand wringing. We'd get vaccinated and push off. You reduce your chances of death to about the same as winning the lottery, so you stop worrying about it. In my opinion, it is this, more than anything else, that is causing vaccine resistance: the clear and transparent lack of trust that people have in the vaccine at all levels.
Who doesn’t remember all the declarations that they wouldn’t take the vaccine or demand more tests for their state because Trump?
Sure happened here:
>"SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California won't allow any distribution
>of coronavirus vaccines in the nation’s most populous state
>until it is reviewed by the state’s own panel of experts, Gov.
>Gavin Newsom said Monday.
From the first google hit. But, yeah, Newsome was anti-vax before the election. In fact, he was so anti-vax that California had NO apparatus in place to actually distribute the vaccine when it arrived only a couple of weeks after the Feds predicted it would when saying "Have your plans in place in November".
MSN on Cuomo:
>Governor Andrew Cuomo is threatening to withhold a COVID-19
> vaccine from New York until his team of doctors deem it
> safe because he doesn't trust the FDA or CDC, raising
> serious questions about how and when it will eventually
> become available and who will be the arbiter of it.
>
That was late October. The readouts from the studies were only a month later, they were authorized the beginning of December. Dems are as anti-vax as it comes when it suits their needs.
Vaccines are affective, but they're not a substitute for masking up and social distancing out in public. The mask mandates do NOT undercut the vaccines' affect. What you're saying is totally BS.
This is hilarious.
It's like mass neurosis, completely ignorant of actual data and rationality, created an account to post the fear mongering script itself.
For those of us who have mastered comparison of size, we've realized that wearing anything other than an N95 mask with no gaps is as useful as walking and chewing gum at the same time in terms of protection, group-thinker.
logic fail. If EITHER the mask or the poke WORKED, the other would be superfluous.
DO a bit of real world research: WHAT is the size (measurement in microns) of the openengs, pores, holes, whatever you want to call them, in the "filter medium" the blue paper multi-fold masks that are almost universally used out there? Find out, the unit of mearure in microns would be most accurate and useful.
Now find out the range of diameter of the Novel Coronaa Virus that is behind all the kerfuffle.
Next take out your little ten key hand calculator and work out the total number of viral "cells" that can spread out in a straight line and still easily pass tsideways hrough the "holes" in that overrated mug nappie into which you put your complete trust......
NOW come back and tell me again how "effective" masks are.......
You're better than this, Reason.
Now that Koch / Reason libertarianism has a comfortable home in the Democratic Party, it's time to start preparing for 2024. Obviously we'll vote for Biden and / or Harris like we did in 2020. And DeSantis is a possible GOP Presidential candidate. We have to support the progressive / corporate / neocon #Resistance plan to damage him as much as possible over the next few years.
#DeathSantis
PS — Andrew Cuomo is still a way better governor than #DeathSantis.
The unvaccinated are going to die, also unmasked they’ll drop like flies as those with passports return to almost normal lives.
the vaccinated will also die.
Agreed but the vaccinated get, transmit, get seriously ill and die from COVID at a much lower rate than those who aren’t fully vaccinated.
It’s Darwinian.
give it five years.
Like when your friends exterminated the Jews?
No! Wrong, Dillinger! People who are vaccinated don't end up in the hospital, or end up dying from it.
lol
Isn't that thrilling AF?
I am shocked to see the holocost denier favor internal passports!
I'm glad the anti holocaust believer also believes firmly in the non science backed covid fear hysterics.
Yes covid is real. No life shouldn't shut down from the risks.
Hospitals are shutting down for the rest of us because people like you. Rationed care is here! You did it!
But being morbidly obese and unhealthy to the point of cancer really didn't cause the beds to fill up right?
Or maybe immune-compromised people should be shut away right? They are taking up valuable health care when they know at all time interacting will get them sick?
That’s what jfree says.
A man shot six times in TX has been waiting a week for surgery because covid has filled the hospitals
That's horrible! We can thank Donald Trump and his minions in Congress for having gotten us into this hellish pandemic, and for guys like DeSantis and his ilk for making an already hellishly horrific situation far worse.
Any more lies you want to spread? Or is that all you’ve got?
"Ben Taub's ICU is at 98% capacity, a spokesperson told Fox 26. About a third of those ICU patients are being treated for the coronavirus, the spokesperson said."
JFree - Cherry picking is a successful career!
Now tell us why he can't transfer somewhere else, you cowardly piece of lefty shit. Oh, and jam your PANIC flag up your ass, stick first.
No they aren't. Stop believing the media and go look at the data yourself Sullum
"Hospitals are shutting down for the rest of us because people like you..."
You.
Are.
Full.
Of.
Shit.
Fatties should have been dieting for the past 18 months and there would be no issues.
Jeffy hardest hit.
I'm proud to say my kid is in zero compliance with masking at school. They weren't too happy with me when I showed zero concern.
Aren't they used to neglect by now?
Or when she keyed their cars
That's really stupid of you to let your kid be in zero compliance with mask-wearing at school. I don't blame the school faculty members for being angry with you for showing no concern.
So where's the tragedy, and what's with the non sequitur?
A year ago, masks were the best available containment method.
Now, vaccines are so vastly superior to masks, that it is patently silly to be debating masks at all. And never should the vaccinated be held hostage for masking, lockdowns, distancing, simply to accommodate those who have chosen otherwise on vaccination.
Get the damn vaccine. Otherwise you takes your chances.
Sorry, but according to "authoritative" sources the vaccine is so ineffective that making is required regardless of vaccination status. At least that is the interpretation I come to given no new mandates or precautions actually remove older, supposedly less effective restrictions.
And the bozos talking out both sides of their mouths wonder why vaccine hesitancy doesn't dissipate.
Gaslightman has figured it out.
>>so vastly superior to masks
anything superior to nothing.
If these unvaccinated would crawl under the front porch I might agree with you but they're of course running to the doctors they refused to listen to in the first place and it's overwhelming the hospital system causing others who need that medical care to suffer.
"If these unvaccinated would crawl under the front porch..."
None of your business, steaming pile of lefty shit.
lol cucarahas!
You strong a bunch of words together to bleat like an idiot saying things not reflected by facts. Of course I can say that about every comment you’ve ever made.
Indeed.
You're such a dumb faggot, perhaps try a different talking point. Possibly one that's based in reality. We had to listen to over a year of you retards telling us the hospital systems would be overwhelmed and there would be dead in the streets. Still waiting. 2 weeks to slow the curve is turning into 2 years? Fuck off.
Neither should the unvaccinated.
If you're scared of them, stay the fuck home.
I agree that the fully vaccinated people should not constantly be held hostage to lock-downs, but I do think that masking up and social distancing also have to go along with the vaccines, which are not a substitute for masking or social distancing.
I'm fully vaccinated, but I wear masks everywhere I go, except for my apartment and when I'm in my car, since I live alone, and am the only one who drives my car.
Lol
And why exactly was it wrong?
Because it's authoritarian to not medicate people against their will. That's the takeaway from the Reason headlines today.
Unless they live in Africa or south of the border, in which case it's wrong to want them to be vaccinated. Or something. I can't follow the convoluted thinking anymore.
It's pretty easy: progressive policies are in fact, by results, racist, whether implicitly or tacitly from the start. But if one points it out, that person is racist, because power and privilege. If the person is non-white (minus most Asians, Hispanics who don't want to be called Latinx, and ethnic variations that don't fit into the progressive Manichean worldview) and disadvantaged, their internalized white supremacy has them questioning their betters. Simple!
Coming soon from Reason:
‘The Libertarian Case for Government Forced Vaccinations at Gunpoint’
Sounds like Robby article.
To be sure.
That's a sullum piece, my guess. Though, after today's greenhut horseshit, they could write it together.
It could be any of the writers here
I have the same question. He didn't tell teachers they weren't allowed to wear masks. He didn't tell anyone not to get vaccinated. He didn't recommend people start licking foreign substances.
While one of the ideas many libertarians hold is about making government as localized as possible, that doesn't mean it's good for local governments to violate civil rights.
Right, libertarians aren't looking to substitute a grand tyranny with hundreds of others.
Desantis just sat on his fat ass and did nothing useful. Gone by Easter! The summer heat will kill it! It's just like the flu no big deal!
Desantis just sat on his fat ass and did nothing useful. Gone by Easter! The summer heat will kill it! It’s just like the flu no big deal!
And compared to states with wannabe-dictator governors like Whitmer and Newsom his outcomes were . . . about the same.
"Desantis just sat on his fat ass and did nothing useful..."
Compared to Cuomo who actively murdered people and Newsom wh0 trashed the CA economy, steaming pile of lefty shit?
Mission Accomplished!
DeSantis has declared victory against a deadly pathogen at least three times: In May 2020, when he bucked masks and social distancing as a winning strategy; again in March 2021, when he hailed his fact-free, unscientific response as superior to ones based on facts and science, and now, when he’s selling merchandise poking fun at medical and public health experts for spending the past year telling people to take COVID-19 seriously.
https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/op-ed/article253041468.html
Jacob, this is going to age about as well as all your pants shitting over 1/6.
You always go on about science, then show your complete ignorance of it. Just admit it, democrats don’t use science, just political propaganda.
And yet the statistics show nearly the same results as other states.
Letting parents choose is the biggest fear of authoritarians
Apparently it is wrong because he should be advocating for charter schools instead, at least if I understand the article correctly.
So, if DeSantis is wrong with a mask ban, would a school board be wrong with a mask mandate? In both cases someone is restricting options for Covid control in FL.
would a school board be wrong with a mask mandate?
The libertarian position should be yes, of course. But Reason isn't a libertarian publication, so they can freely criticize DeSantis for not letting local tyrants exercise petty tyranny on their subjects, but they'll never criticize Democrats for their petty tyranny. They couldn't even bring themselves to condemn New York's internal passport policy until the one libertarian left at Reason did it for them two days later.
when was the last time you thought "herd immunity"?
Every time I look at the Case and Mortality tracker for NJ I think of it. Those hospitalization figures are doing exactly what they're supposed to considering levels of vaccination and prior exposure extrapolated from hospital/mortality results.
Burlington Co. representing.
Glouco, bitches! And Camden County before that.
my overprotective mom used to get pissy when we played @Camden High or @Willingboro High
I hope your mom wasn't so overprotective that she worried when you played us (Highland).
think Detroit Rock City. and yes she literally set my Blizzard of Ozz cassette on fire.
Elizabeth and Rahway were supposed to be scary but we only ever got into fights with Piscataway and Old Bridge.
"That's the aspect of this story for which DeSantis deserves criticism: His COVID-19 declarations get in the way of individual public schools or districts requiring teachers to get vaccinated as a condition of employment."
Holy shit. Robby Soave is literally making the argument that the government should be requiring people to be vaccinated as a condition of their employment.
What the fuck has happened to this website? This isn't even a "private property rights" question. THESE ARE PUBLIC AGENCIES. THEY ARE PUBLIC AGENCIES THAT DESANTIS HAS BEEN ELECTED TO MANAGE.
That Robby really thinks DeSantis deserves criticism for this, means Robby really thinks PUBLIC SCHOOLS should be mandating vaccination for its employees.
Note here that Robby's logic is as bad as the maskers. The teachers weren't at school yet. So mask policy **and** vaccination policies didn't matter- the first mandates are only a few weeks old, and likely wouldn't have saved these people.
But back to the point, it is just inconceivable to me that Soave doesn't even consider that there is- perhaps- a problem for libertarians when the government insists that people jab themselves with needles for their own good.
And by the way, I am open to the fact that reasonable people can disagree about vaccination requirements. But the fact that Soave just blindly accepts the notion that declining to mandate vaccinations is something to be criticized suggests that he is uninterested in that debate, which is a pretty new low for libertarians, IMHO.
Aron you knows darn well our only real freedom is through the chains of socialism that bind us.
Robby should do a historical piece about how Rosa Parks stunted racial equality.
Blaming DeSantis misses the mark. The vaccine restrictions are the work of the Legislature. SB 2006 specifically prohibits vaccine mandates (see pages 22-23 in the link). DeSantis did sign it when he could have vetoed, but I don't think he can bear all the credit/blame for this.
Anyone can get vaccinated. I don't see the problem. It's not a prohibition on vaccination. It's a prohibition on requiring vaccination.
I thought the people here went kinda off the rails over Trump, but apparently this isn't even a libertarian website anymore.
It's really not.
Also, apparently socialist libertarianism is a thing now, but maybe someone can confirm that. I heard that from a YouTuber named Vaush. According to that guy, libertarianism was started by socialists, so maybe reason is going back to its roots?
Jeff also claims to be one. It is a word leftists used instead of admitting they are leftists. Socialism and libertarianism don't mix. They claim it is simply the workers owning capital but they are for all sorts of authoritarian actions.
It's definitely an oxymoron.
Liberty and big govt. are truly incompatible, but I wonder when Jeff talks about owning capital, if he's referring to co-ops and that sort of thing.
I think it’s one of those things where “libertarian” has or had a slightly different meaning in England and Europe back in the day. It think it suggested something closer to an egalitarian anarcho-socialism or some such. Of course, “liberty” and “liberal” often inverted or blurred meanings down the years once the French Revolution got ahold of it. And later once the “liberal democracies” ended up getting all progressive, then Keynesian corporatist.
Does he also talk about pro-Israel Jews that are members of Hamas?
"But back to the point, it is just inconceivable to me that Soave doesn’t even consider that there is- perhaps- a problem for libertarians when the government insists that people jab themselves with needles for their own good."
Employers can mandate many criteria as a prerequisite for employment. While the government should not have the right to mandate vaccines for the general populace, they certainly are free to do so with their employees.
Can they mandate other vaccines? What about a particular diet? Childlessness? We've already been through this nonsense. It's none of their goddamned business.
"Can they mandate other vaccines? What about a particular diet? Childlessness? We’ve already been through this nonsense. It’s none of their goddamned business."
I am assuming that there are limits which the Courts would put on employers. There are also practical limitations. There is a vaccine for Ebola. Somehow I doubt a business owner in Kansas City would want to shell out the money and time to vaccinate their employers for Ebola.
I am unfamiliar with specific examples of "diet" or "lack of children" being an official prerequisite for employment. You can provide me with some examples, if you like (I do know of one case or involving "lack of children," but it was not "policy," and is being litigated. I suspect it will lose.)
"...their employEES for Ebola."
I don't agree with the following being done but I can't see diet following under a non practical limitation, you either weigh within the accepted parameters or not. What would be the limits the court would do? What would you do? Where I work our biggest spend on health care is lipitor by far. If someone was to say mandate a diet restriction; As we seem to be about everyone's affect on others abstract quality of life mine would be better. I'd have more disposable income through less drug spend and possibly lower insurance rates in general with because of less use.
“Employers can mandate many criteria as a prerequisite for employment.“
Sorry, but that doesn’t matter. DeSantis *is* the employer. He is the CEO of the state and he said, “No we won’t be mandating vaccinations!”
The surprising thing is that Soave is now on record saying this decision should be criticized. Get it? He is not arguing that DeSantis had the right to mandate vaccines. He is arguing that DeSantis is wrong not to mandate vaccines.
While many libertarians have argued that social media platforms have the right to censor the speech on their platforms, I have seen none say that they SHOULD be censoring such speech.
Likewise I find it odd that a libertarian is arguing that an employer SHOULD be conditioning employment on performing medical procedures. But 2020, man. Here we are.
"Likewise I find it odd that a libertarian is arguing that an employer SHOULD be conditioning employment on performing medical procedures. But 2020, man. Here we are."
Yeah. Getting libertarians to agree on something is like herding cats. As a general stance, I don't agree with mandates, including mandates NOT to mandate. As for schools, for instance, I would like to see that decision made locally. But then, I would also like to see curriculum approved locally, rather than mandated from above. Fat chance of that happening.
"As a general stance, I don’t agree with mandates, including mandates NOT to mandate."
So you're not a big fan of the bill of rights?
"So you’re not a big fan of the bill of rights?"
The "mandates" created by the Bill of Rights are strict LIMITS on GOVERNMENT. It does not CREATE mandates, but rather, is designed to protect us from mandates. In its most basic and strictest interpretation, the only mandate the government has is to secure our natural rights. To do that, the Constitution "mandates" the government to do some basic things (create and maintain a court system, defensive military, etc.)
But the click counts are up, so that is all that matters.
Masks should be mandatory… unless you’re eating or drinking in public. And that’s how you know it’s not science, it’s “science”.
It's even better than that, the rule in a lot of places for going to a restaurant was that you had to wear your mask except when seated at your table.
So when you enter the restaurant you have to wear your mask until you're seated, then you can take it off for as long as you remain seated. If you get up to go to the restroom, you have to wear your mask until you return to your seat.
I'm kind of amazed we haven't noticed the obvious cure to the pandemic: restaurant chairs.
Right now in restaurants in Hawaii, you have to wear a mask at the table if you're not eating or drinking.
Because those magical moments when you're eating, you're immune from catching or spreading the virus.
And the people waiting and clearing the tables are washing their hands every time they remove your covid-riddled plate. And never touching their cloth mask. And changing their masks after every interaction with a customer, but only after washing their hands so their covid-riddled hands don't infect the new mask.
There are PROCEDURES IN PLACE, PEOPLE!
This. Masks, when effective, are part of a system. When you do not use the tools in the proper manner you will not get the desired outcome.
Failure to understand this reduces masks to a sort of talisman.
Masks are more like a collar, to show you're owned
Just for the record, taking your "cloth face covering" off and then putting it back on, for any reason is NOT "wearing a mask" in any medical sense at all. Same with the 'under the nose' and around the neck' brigades.
According to the absolutely correct, never wrong, never changing science of the omnipotent CDC;
1. Be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before putting on a mask.
2. Do NOT touch the mask when wearing it. If you have to often touch/adjust your mask, it doesn’t fit you properly, and you may need to find a different mask or make adjustments.
3. The mask must cover your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin.
4. The mask must fit snugly against the sides of your face.
I'm not sure that 1 and 2 matter in the specific case of COVID. COVID doesn't spread via contact. So, it really shouldn't matter if you touch your mask.
That can't be true. Otherwise why would the government be telling us to continuously wash our hands?
Because they think it doesn't hurt to wash hands, and they haven't proven that it is totally impossible, just extremely unlikely.
They don't understand the damage lack of prioritization causes. One of my "favorite" things is when I see people too scared to hand shake so they elbow bump. Which, of course, causes people to get closer together than if they shook hands and hence is almost certainly far more dangerous.
Exactly. I wasn't sure how you'd respond, because trust me, I was preloaded with images of virtue-signaling celebrities and politicians wearing two masks elbow bumping for the camera.
Like I said, this is directly from the web site of the absolutely correct, never wrong, never changing, omnipotent CDC.
You take it up with them.
"I’m kind of amazed we haven’t noticed the obvious cure to the pandemic: restaurant chairs."
Awesome. Wish you were around more, Habit. Always good for a laugh.
And BLM riots...
Peaceful Protests, actually.
Music festivals in Chicago and birthday gala events on Martha’s Vineyard are also optional mask activities.
DeSantis: The new Trump!
I would vote for him
Trump, DeSantis or both?
I'm in CA; my vote is irrelevant, but I was making reference to the new whipping boy: Anything goes wrong, blame DeSantis (Trump)!
No, ADL said he would vote for 'him' as a response to your post where you mention both. The suspense is killing me.
DeSantis.
https://www.nationalreview.com/2021/08/why-the-left-needs-ron-desantis-to-fail/
Yeah, and he's totally unapologetic about his policies, and the left absolutely hates that--they hate that they cannot assert control over him.
The new TDS variant called DSDS (DeSantis Derangement Syndrome).
Yeah. There's basically one thing I will vote for at this point: no more lockdowns, mandates, forced business closures. Never again.
Well, the next 10 months are going to suck.
I see that Reason is already taking shots at Desantis; trying to derail any shot at the Presidency 3 years out.
CB
Reason is the new National Review.
Meet the new establishment, same as the old establishment.
4 teachers have died from COVID just this week. This is life & death, not a political game. Mask Up."
Again, with the subtext that the disease is "deadly to the unvaccinated"-- mask bullshit ENTIRELY aside. 100% of the people I knew who caught covid were "unvaccinated" because there was no vaccine available in 2020 and early 2021 (at least to us normies). 100% of those people (with varying underlying health conditions) survived, and weren't even hospitalized. I'm still looking for the disconnects.
"3 Unvaccinated Florida Teachers Died, the Media Rushed To Blame Ron DeSantis' Mask Ban"
"CNN similarly used the news hook to focus on DeSantis' mask prohibition."
There is no ban on masks!
A ban on forcing people to wear masks is a Ban on Masks.
A ban on Congress making a law abridging speech is a ban on speech.
So the "ban" was a ban on *requiring* masks, allowing any karen to wear 5 of 'em if she so wished to signal?
It is similar to the “anti-vaxx” monicker. Have not heard anyone wanting the prohibition of vaccines.
Reason is establishment propaganda, and has been for a while
Did DeSantis ban "masks" or "mask mandates"? My understanding is that he banned the latter, in which case, the teachers were free to wear masks or not wear masks as they saw fit.
This is bad, even by your standards, Rico.
You raise a good point. I've seen numerous articles conflate this and give the impression DeSantis banned masks altogether. They are deliberately unclear to make DeSantis look as bad as possible, and when they get called out on it they can claim they wrote honestly.
Oooh, yeah, good call, Rico. Let's bring back segregation. Because a large majority of the unvaccinated are some combination of poor or minority.
COVID Death Toll In Florida Passes Ron DeSantis' Margin Of Victory
Florida's official COVID death total is up past 39,695 since he began his reign of anti-mask terrorism on local communities.
If you are not horrified by those numbers, then you don't have blood pumping through your veins.
Governor DeSantis has done everything he can to help the spread of COVID throughout Florida by performing for the MAGA cult and QAnon anti-vax crazies.
County, the second-largest school district in Florida, voted to ignore DeSantis' anti-mask requirements, even after the governor promised to withhold salaries of school leaders who dare to impose mask mandates.
Today, CNN reports that the Biden administration has sent ventilators to Florida as the state tries to fend off the surge of COVID after receiving requests for help.
Biden may also arrange to pay salaries in school districts that stand up to DeSantis's stupidity. Reuters: "White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters the administration is looking at whether it can use unspent COVID-19 relief funds to combat any pay cuts imposed by DeSantis."
https://crooksandliars.com/2021/08/covid-death-toll-florida-passes-ron
.. the Biden administration has sent ventilators to Florida..
Naturally, as ventilators kill people with Covid.
From steaming pile of lefty shit's link:
"Welcome to Crooks and Liars. Progressive news, curated just for you."
I'm sure they got the "liars" part covered.
Fuck off and die, steaming pile of lefty shit.
So the public school teachers the democrats so adore are actually anti-vaxx, MAGA, spreadnecks, who knew? Actually, my son’s former second grade teacher was doxxed after someone saw her mask less in the background at a Trump event. Kids don’t go to that school anymore so don’t know what happened to her, but sure it wasn’t good.
"But school hasn't actually started yet in Broward, so the teachers probably did not contract the disease in their classrooms. Indeed, Fusco noted that they were on summer break."
Doesn't matter; as far as MSM is concerned DeSantis is fair game and facts to the contrary are just racist niggling.
Killed in the summertime air. So what do you think is gonna happen when they're all gathered in a closed room for the next months now that Covid is infecting kids?
Yeah, people are spending a ton of time outside in Florida in August. Herp.
now that Covid is infecting kids?
Should we flag this for medical misinformation now?
I don't know what the fuck Strudel is carrying on about because I muted his troll ass a while back. Do what you want but I recommend it [as with the holocaust denier, the fake reverend, and the guy who takes it in the bottom].
Meh, I don't mute people. I can always choose to not respond.
"So what do you think is gonna happen when they’re all gathered in a closed room for the next months now that Covid is infecting kids?"
If the teacher is vaccinated? Two weeks paid sick leave while spending two days recovering from cold-like symptoms.
If the teacher is not vaccinated? I guess, maybe it moves up the day he rolls the dice. The vast, vast majority of people who don't get the vaccine are going to get infected by the time this ends. Does it really matter if they get it in a classroom vs a restaurant vs a grocery store? As far as I'm concerned, choosing to not get vaccinated is choosing to get infected. I see no reason to delay a return to normalcy for children (who have suffered enormous mental health harms over the last 15 months) in order to delay the inevitable.
Note: I'm not even going into the question of how infectious elementary school children are (seems to me that if an immune system kills the virus before it reaches the lungs, that is going to do a heck of a lot to decrease transmission) and how effective masks are (if masks are 20% effective, then most likely the teacher would have the same issue regardless of whether his students were masking).
So, let me see if I've got this straight.
We've gotta get vaccinated
AND
Wear masks
AND
social distance
AND
lock down
AND
get continuous booster shots
And if we do all that there's a good chance we'll get covid anyway? But the continuous vaccination means we'll survive to live lonely masked lives without human contact from inside our homes that we can't be evicted from while receiving checks from the government?
Is that the way to beat this?
Close, but you forgot the part where you need two (or more) masks.
We've always been at war with Covid.
Even Peggy Noonan, reliable weathervane of the mushy center-right, is frustrated. Democrats' most reliable demographics are simply ignoring their pleas on vaccines and masks. I don't see this state of affairs persisting too much longer, if only out of naked self-preservation.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/biden-trump-desantis-mask-mandate-covid-19-coronavirus-teachers-union-remote-learning-delta-11628802163
So long as the democrats and their media shills can keep blaming MAGA anti-Vaxxers for the delta variant, they will. They don’t need no stinkin science to prove their point.
Well, you forgot where we'll have one internet site run by Zuckerberg that broadcasts Robin DeAngelo speeches on a loop.
Yes. You need boosters until you actually get covid, then you'll keep taking boosters you don't need.
Rather than focus on DeSantis, "the press" had better start working on preventing Trump from getting elected to the House next year. Once in, he can take the Speaker role, impeach the lid putter and the silent one both, and be back where he belongs.
people die, it happens, it's tragic
but according to CDC, people were dying at a faster rate in Jan 2018
remember 2018, with the economic shutdowns, the masks, the vaccine mandates? yeah me neither
since March 2021 excess deaths in the US have never approached the 2018 peak
sadly even Reason doesn't seem to have followed the basic science
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm
lol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%932018_United_States_flu_season
Basic science is racist. And links to the cdc are medical misinformation, so don't even go there.
But it’s the conservatives who are asking you to disbelieve your own eyes.
https://reason.com/2021/08/13/conservatives-are-asking-you-to-disbelieve-your-own-eyes/
Yeah, when the leftists are conducting a cultural revolution as we speak... a bunch of regressive leftist shits at reason for sure
Who cares what the mainstream media says, the only people who pay them any attention whatsoever are the sheep.
I thought this was a libertarian leaning publication. What's up with the fascist disembowelment of the Nuremberg Codes? Zelig Heil much Robby?
When the conclusion is handed to you, and you are told that there is no possible other thing that you could conclude, you should begin to wonder about what you're NOT being told.
I listened to that podcast and have been listening to it. It's great.
So, he made vaccines available, but didn't mandate them. Four teachers recently died. They made their choices: apparently one took the vaccine and three didn't. That's how a free society operates: individuals accept an amount of risk in their lives for the freedom to make their own choices. Why is this a problem?
FYI, Florida's COVID deaths are lower than they were a year ago this date, far lower than its peaks, and far lower than many other states in the US. Things are fine. There's no need for a totalitarian panic.
We actually don't know whether the 4th had the vaccine. My bet would be on not vaccinated.
"DeSantis was wrong to restrict options for COVID control in Florida schools"
No he wasn't. The "option" to restrict choice IS NOT AN OPTION.
For the love of god Robbie, read up on natural rights again. If your imagined "right" involves infringing upon someone else's, then it isn't a right.
Using a legislative majority to force people to vaccinate or wear masks: not a right.
Using a legislative majority to prevent people from using a legislative majority to accomplish the above: a right.
DeSantis protects the rights of all Floridians and maybe all Americans (one day).
0% of people who wear a condom 24 hours a day have died from COVID, "Science". Wear a condom.
The vaccines work. Masks don't.
Every citizen has the right to wear a mask. All that is banned is government mandates, as it should be. I also agree then my working career I was qualified on everything from a 3M paper dust mask to and SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus). I worked with silica, coal, and asbestos all which can cause long term disease. I also worked chlorine gas and anhydrous ammonia, which will kill you in a hurry, I know what masks do, and how to properly use them, and what we are doing with these masks is a joke. If it makes you feel better, wear it, but don't force it on others.
Agree; at the hospital where I work we used NIOSH approved N 95 respirators [for which we were fitted] and they must work because none of us [in the ER] got COVID, even before the vaccine came out late 2020.
What I see in the community, consisting of paper "surgical" masks for various fabrics, are essentially worthless. Even if they weren't most people do not even wear them correctly, but then it is mostly performative any way.

Reason, could you put in an edit function like most site? Some of us are power typist and need to edit out comments! I do love the mute function.
"I do love the mute function."
You're not the only one; only trolls and those who seem to love to call them names don't use it.
So Mike, sarc, jeff, pod, etc, are not trolls?
Unless a mask mandate is for M95 or N95 masks or a NBC gas mask the mandate is as Rand Paul stated Kabuki Theater. All other paper & cloth masks are as effective as the Holland tunnel is in preventing a motorcycle from passing through. The only mechanism that masks with effective openings much greater than the diameter of the virus is stopping liquid droplets which contain the virus that are expectorated by an infected individual. Apparently very little of the virus hitchhikes on liquid droplets because statistically there is very little difference in infections between countries that did & didn't have mask mandates. Social distancing & limiting indoor crowd sizes are the most effective measures. Infection risk has high correlation with duration of exposure; which is probably why contact tracing has shown that very few infections have been traced to restaurants in NYNY & La La Land or any other city, county or state that shut down these businesses.
Children are at the absolute lowest risk of contracting and dying of COVID. Teachers and administrators have the option of getting the vaccine if they want it. The Delta variant, while more contagious, is far less virulent were it not there would be millions more dead in India where it originated; a country with far worse healthcare, much more crowding, and a lower vaccination rate. Scientific studies like the Danish RCT with over 4800 subjects show masks do not stop the spread of the disease - they are virtue signaling at best and dangerous in the long term at worst. A student is much more likely to die from seasonal flu than COVID yet we have no such procedures in place for that. Can we please dispense with the COVID kabuki theater and get on with our lives?
The news is full of stories of pediatric wards filling up with young children with Covid-19 Delta variant. The idea that children are at the absolute lowest risk is out of date in this fast moving pandemic.
Organized news has an agenda in hyping the risks. Pediatric ICU's have a hand full of pediatric cases, mostly older teens, most with serious morbid obesity, a few with other substantial risk factors. I have not seen a single normal kid in intensive care in the whole epidemic.
There ARE millions more dead in India. Their covid count is roughly 10% of their excess death count. The best guess I've seen for their real covid death count is just over 3 million.
I believe the point was that the schools are going to have risks for students and teachers alike. These four teachers caught Covid-19 during summer vacation, but if they had caught it just a couple of weeks later they'd have brought it to the schools before realizing how sick they were going to get, and dying.
The schools need to be as safe as we can make them, not as unsafe as political posturing will create. Vaccination AND masking are probably the right answer when we're talking about the Delta variant, and anyone who wants to exercise their freedom to not mask should also have the freedom to not be in the school building...students, teachers, administrators or staff. What they should not have is the freedumb to deliberately put the students, teachers, administrators and staff at health risk over politics.
The most important thing for the safety of the public would be to beat you to death, or at least lock you in your home forever.
Stop being selfish.
A senior editor at a Libertarian website upset that people don't want mandates? So government mandating medical procedures and personal attire choices is a libertarian position now? Wait, is this even still a libertarian website??
The only problem with blaming Ron DeSantis is he never told anyone not to take the vaccine. He just said that the state and local governments could not demand or force any to get the vaccine. Nor did he tell anybody that they can't wear the mask. In all cases the people were told to check with your family doctor because he/she should know best what would be good for you. DeSantis was a little ahead of Texas governor Greg Abbott in this area.
Each person should not listen to anyone that you don't trust but follow your family doctor's counsel on this and all other medical advise. Not that I am saying that the medical professionals are God but they are the best we have at this time.
Yes, deciding to remain unvaccinated is the wrong choice, from both the personal and the societal point of view. But mandating vaccination is neither libertarian nor liberal. It is Darwinian.
Masking, however, has little to recommend it.
The N-95 filters 95% of the aerosol particulates that are 0.3 microns or larger, which would not include covid viruses at 100nm (0.1microns) UNLESS they were bonded to stuff making them larger which, fortunately, they almost always are.
So that takes care of the air going through the mask. UNfortunately, a bit of inspired air comes in around the margins of the mask, which are not sealed unless you're in certain surgical theaters.
Thus the limited effectiveness of masks. Which, together with social distancing, are a rather poor approximation of the medieval solutions of quarantine, isolation, and avoidance. See the Decameron. Or Masque of the Red Death.
But it all depends on quantification. Superspreaders have a high viral load. The asymptomatic infected (50% in the Diamond Princess experiment) have a low viral load. It takes a certain inoculum to produce an infection that causes disease.
So yes, every little bit helps, a little bit.
So if you're in a room with all vaccinated individuals, whether or not they're infected (unlikely but possible), the viral load will not be sufficient to infect the vaccinated you, mask or no mask. No worries, mate. At least, no more than crossing the street.
Does this mean you have to discriminate among those you associate with? I would never say so. Surrounding the unvaccinated with pitchforks and torches would be so... uncivilized...
So please do vaccinate. Early and often, and with boosters.
Fuck you.
Covid is 99.99% (low estimate) not dangerous.
If you're scared, hide in your bubble or wear a hazmat suit.
But the neurosis you display is a far greater threat than the virus ever was.
Not getting vaccinated is the right choice.
And you're going to one day understand why.

Fuck off, slaver. None of your business.
Did you not understand what I said about mandates?
"Furthermore, at least three of the four teachers were unvaccinated (the status of the fourth is unknown). CBS saved this detail for the very last sentence of its story; CNN noted it upfront but quickly moved on to discuss masks."
But oh no, Donald Trump called the press enemies of the people. We can't do that, like ever.
Once again an article in Reason where most of the comments are far more informative and in line with actual libertarian principles than the article itself.

Yet another battle of COMMIE-EDUCATION.
Isn't it about time to shut down Government Indoctrination Camps.
Isn't it about time to stop thinking they're all Children of the State?
I'll say one thing; my property taxes could buy a heck of a lot "better" and "safer" education that what Government Forces upon us all.
“ DeSantis has also made it very difficult for both government agencies and private businesses to require vaccination. That's the aspect of this story for which DeSantis deserves criticism”
Wait. Reason magazine says someone deserves criticism for preventing a government agencies from mandating a vaccine that does not even have full government approval?
Wow.
So an effective libertarian government would be one that facilitated the mandating of specific healthcare measures? That’s where Reason is at now?
De Santis is using the right approach. It's the Swedish approach.
And one day, everyone will see it.
But for now. This scamdemic and moral panic has now moved from hysteria to another level of hysteria. The corruption and incompetence is beyond anything I could have ever imagined.
It IS Gotham. All those in authority and media are insane and mentally ill.
At this point, it must ALL collapse.
Wow.
They actually published this article...

Here’s What You Need to Know about Ivermectin
FDA has not approved ivermectin for use in treating or preventing COVID-19 in humans. Ivermectin tablets are approved at very specific doses for some parasitic worms, and there are topical (on the skin) formulations for head lice and skin conditions like rosacea. Ivermectin is not an anti-viral (a drug for treating viruses).
Taking large doses of this drug is dangerous and can cause serious harm.
If you have a prescription for ivermectin for an FDA-approved use, get it from a legitimate source and take it exactly as prescribed.
Never use medications intended for animals on yourself. Ivermectin preparations for animals are very different from those approved for humans.
Their only case against ivermectin is the dosage for horses would be bad for humans...
Here's their conclusion:
"Meanwhile, effective ways to limit the spread of COVID-19 continue to be to wear your mask, stay at least 6 feet from others who don’t live with you, wash hands frequently, and avoid crowds."
Yet another reason public education is wrong. You always had to pay for it even if you disagree with what and how the children are being taught. This is true even if you send your kids to private school at additional expense (while still paying handsomely for public schools with your taxes, that you aren't even using). Now you are additionally being forced to pay for public schools even if you disagree with their level of COVID precautions, whether overly cautions or not cautions enough for your tastes.
What the hell is so hard about understanding that education should be like any other service? Having multiple competing providers. Different providers have different policies, levels of quality and price and you can vote with your dollars which ones you do and don't want to patronize. And you don't pay if you don't consume. One size fits all doesn't even work on T shirts, let alone education. And socializing any service that doesn't equally benefit everybody (like say the military) is paramount to theft.
How does the military benefit me? We are retreating from a lost war in Afghanistan with over $900 billion spent not to mention the human cost. We lost they won. Burn the papers and evacuate the embassy.
Iraq was and is the same deal. Get out.
We need a strong defense force. It is not what we have.
Schools do benefit me. How so. My property value is related to the school district. A potential buyer can do much better if they want a better rated school and paying the fraction of property tax than they could do with the $18 k or so for private school tuition. If you do not have school age children you still need to compete with that potential buyer. I win.
Not only that. If the public school system goes away tomorrow the results on the overall economy are predictable. Somalia. So what I charge for my services drops in revenue because the illiterate cannot pay for it.
In one sense you should not pay for the education of someone else’s children. In the other it is a good investment on your part.
Those who create *value* for others gets more *value* in return??
Oh; the curse of it all!!!!! Heaven forbid life be 'fair'!!!/s
Any more excuses for Gov-Gun-Forced *theft*?
Well private schools are straining to stay open because they have to survive. Public school employees get full pay working or not. No worries about no school. Paid vacation . Yippee
And why not school choice? Because public school employees are afraid, rightfully so, they they wouldn't be chosen.
Masking 6 year old kids is ridiculous. And DeSantis doesn't prevent any parent from masking their kid but prevents a mandate which eliminates choice.
Something you think Robby and Reason would just support. But Reason is authoritarian not libertarian.
... Or just get the Gov-Guns away from the 6-year-old kids altogether.
So obviously the vaccine is not effective against the variants. Just like any flu in history. The vaccines are not 95% or anywhere near it.
But the "sciencey" folks keep embarrassing themselves by saying we just need more jabs. That obviously don't work.
The variants will become less lethal and eventually will just be another varian of the regular flu. Like 1918, 1958 and 1968. But the tyrants want control and here we go again.
Desantis didn’t restrict anything Robby. He just won’t let them mandate masks. If a kid or a teacher wants to mask up they can. They just can’t pressure others to do the same. What is wrong with that approach. Come on Robby, stop buying the media bullshit.
Why aren’t public school teachers required to be vaccinated, now that you mention it?
Because (depending on the level of Gov) Mary and Laura Ingall's out on the prairie are going to feel the oppression by Milwaukee voters making 'rules' in their secluded school hundreds of miles away when they've have zero cases in the last 2-years.
This is the beuty of proper representation enacted by the required federalism of the USA's foundation. To each their own Liberty.
