Senate Could Pass a $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Bill This Week, Even Though There's No Agreement on How To Pay for It
Plus: Strip clubs help reduce crime rates, tariffs fail to achieve their primary political purposes, Jeff Bezos goes to space, and more.

Before the end of the week, the Senate may pass a trillion-dollar infrastructure spending bill, or the bipartisan effort to do so might completely unravel. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–N.Y.) has called for a procedural vote on Wednesday to open debate on the infrastructure bill. It's a political gambit meant to apply pressure to Republican senators who agreed to support a smaller version of the $2.25 trillion infrastructure plan that President Joe Biden outlined in March, but that agreement now appears to be on thin ice.
"We shouldn't have an arbitrary deadline of Wednesday," Sen. Rob Portman (R–Ohio), who has led Republican negotiations over the infrastructure bill, told CNN on Sunday. As things stand right now, Schumer is "not going to get 60," Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R–S.D.) tells Politico—referring to the number of votes necessary to invoke cloture and foreclose the possibility of a Republican filibuster of the bill.
One major problem with voting to move the legislation along on Wednesday is that senators are unlikely to know what's in the final version of the bill until Thursday at the earliest.

Another stumbling block is a disagreement over how to pay for the $579 billion in new spending that's proposed as part of the overall $1.2 trillion package—roughly half of which would be covered by repurposing already-approved funds. The bipartisan agreement struck last month calls for beefing up IRS enforcement in order to close the so-called "tax gap," which are federal taxes owed but not paid, and raise $100 billion in new revenue. But some Republicans are (quite understandably) unhappy about the idea of expanding the federal tax cops' power, The Washington Post reports.
Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are also hoping to pass a $3.5 trillion budget plan before the end of the week. It's likely to move forward without any Republican support via the reconciliation process that allows a simple Senate majority to make changes to existing laws governing taxes and spending.
The two things could end up colliding, at least in part. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, suggested on Monday that parts of the infrastructure package could get rolled into the reconciliation bill if the bipartisan agreement falls apart. But even some of his fellow Democrats now seem to be hoping that it does.
It all adds up to another sadly typical example of how big-ticket items make their way through Congress, where the rules are mostly made up and the deficits don't matter. Voting for a bill before we know what's in it? Of course! Agreeing to spend money before we know how we'll pay for it? Naturally!
Much of the discourse surrounding the impending success or collapse of the infrastructure bill will focus on what it means for Biden's promise that he could bring both sides together to, in his words, do big things. But this week is really a test of how aggressively the Senate Democrats are willing to ram through yet another huge spending bill.

The opening of strip clubs correlates with a drop in the number of sex crimes that occur in the same neighborhood, according to a new study published in Oxford University's The Economic Journal:
Can you guess what happens when an adult entertainment establishment opens in a neighborhood?
Sex crimes decline by 13% as a direct result.
Why?

Using tariffs to curb global carbon emissions, as Senate Democrats have proposed doing as part of a $3.5 trillion budget plan, is "a political gimmick, not a real response to climate change," writes The Washington Post's Megan McArdle:
Taxing imports that are carbon-intensive to produce sounds like an easy way to introduce better incentives, especially for developing countries eager to emulate China's coal-fueled economic boom. Unfortunately, carbon tariffs are a political gimmick that won't solve the real problems they ostensibly address, and might well introduce new ones. …
If you want a laser focus on controlling costs and appealing to consumers, it's probably not going to come from government, which always has priorities other than maximum value for money. Case in point: carbon tariffs, which aren't just difficult to implement without domestic carbon pricing, but exactly backward, if we're trying to decarbonize the globe. Industries protected by tariffs tend to be less efficient than their competitors, and "less efficient than competitors" is hardly a model that will appeal to developing countries.
Say it with me: Tariffs not only impose immense economic costs but also fail to achieve their primary policy aims and foster political dysfunction along the way.

Before the end of the week, the Senate may pass a trillion-dollar infrastructure spending bill, or the bipartisan effort to do so might completely unravel.
Not spend money we don't have? Not a chance.
No discussion of Democrat plans to stuff unrelated and very important policy changes into these bills?
They are threatening/promising to shove amnesty, election "reform".. All sorts of very partisan policies into these bills.
But sure.... "bipartisan efforts" might "unravel".
Shes using the white Mike definition of bipartisan, where 1 republican joining 50 democrats is bipartisan. Despite white Mike being kind and online two definitions that require the parties to pass the legislation, not merely individuals of a party, implying bipartisan means majorities of both parties.
But at Reason we do both sides so the democrats don't look as bad.
I think these were written up by Boehm, but potatoe potato
I rarely read the byline. Saw the snippet for Strip Clubs and just guessed it was ENBs usual banter.
Pass a $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Bill This Week, Even Though There's No Agreement on How To Pay for It
Meh. Details.
There's still a disagreement about how exactly they're going to split the tab between Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny.
Don't you guys get it? Not paying for things you want is a progressive Democratic core value--and political strategy. Just claim something is a human right, and its yours.
We shouldn't have an arbitrary deadline of Wednesday...
But our infrastructures like cowboy poetry or whatever the fuck are crumbling now!
And deadlines and calendars (and even the names of the days of the week) are sexist and racist and unjust.
Well days of the week are named for Norse gods, so...
And one goddess and one Roman god and one Christian God.
What happens when they learn that July was named after a man?
Of course they know how they'll pay for it! It's called MMT: Magic Money Theory.
Just wait until Schumer springs a Federal Marijuana Tax as the solution.
I minted this coin yesterday. It's worth ONE TRILLION DOLLARS. Problem solved.
You realize this has been seriously floated as a solution by real people in government, right?
They look at the economic might of Zimbabwe and wonder why America can't be more like them.
I think it was floated by Paul Krugman and not real people in government, though at this point it wouldn't surprise me.
Any sufficiently advanced economic theory is indistinguishable from magic.
By sufficiently advanced I mean anything past the principle of scarcity or the law of supply and demand.
Math (and property) are racist!
Therefore, innumeracy and destitution are anti-racist.
QED, CRT is going to make a bunch of impoverished idiots out of all of us.
One major problem with voting to move the legislation along on Wednesday is that senators are unlikely to know what's in the final version of the bill until Thursday at the earliest.
You say problem; the crafters say opportunity.
Minor detail. It's never stopped them before.
This is a simple application of the Pelosi Gambit:
I.e., I'm smarter than you are so trust me that you'll like it once you experience it, now bend over (although, in her ignorance, she may have been relying on "You can keep your insurance" or "You can keep your doctor" comments by other unnamed individuals).
One major problem with voting to move the legislation along on Wednesday is that senators are unlikely to know what's in the final version of the bill until Thursday at the earliest.
Meh. No one reads it anyway.
Meh. No one reads
itanyway.Fixed that for you (given this is Congress we're talking about).
The opening of strip clubs correlates with a drop in the number of sex crimes that occur in the same neighborhood...
But of course there's the problem of the inverse number of daddy issues.
Can you guess what happens when an adult entertainment establishment opens in a neighborhood?
Sex crimes decline by 13% as a direct result.
Why?
"Potential sex offenders frequent [adult entertainment] establishments rather than committing [sex] crimes"
Oh, now there's a good argument for strip-clubss! So porn videos and OnlyFans for peaceful, friendly, harmless horndogs?
If ever anything screamed "Junk Science" in 1000ft tall letters, it is this "study" and conclusion. Not that I am against strip clubs. But the idea that the neighborhood sex offender from a block and a half away is who is frequenting them is beyond laughable.
Strip clubs are located in nice neighborhoods. Anyone living near one has low property values, and not a lot of disposable income. Strip clubs do not cater to walk-in traffic from people down the block.
I don't know how big of an idiot you have to be to trumpet this study, much less even start with this conclusion and torture some math to reach it.
*are NOT located in nice neighborhoods
* start with this conclusion, torture some math to reach it, and expect intelligent people to believe it.
Heh. The Royal Palace or whatever it is called now is spitting distance from the Hinkley Hilton on Connecticut Avenue in DC, and there used to be two more directly across the street from each other on Wisconsin Avenue at the top of Georgetown (Glover Park, technically).
It all adds up to another sadly typical example of how big-ticket items make their way through Congress, where the rules are mostly made up and the deficits don't matter.

Bravo!
Canada will allow vaccinated Americans to cross the border starting August 9. The Biden administration has yet to announce when it will reciprocate
, as its requirement for Hosing the Hosers is being fine-tuned.
yeah, but who wants to go to Canada?
Fishermen, hunters, lumberjacks, draft-dodgers, heterosexuals, whisky aficionados, Indians fleeing Custer, gold panners, wheat farmers...
19 and 20 year olds who want to drink
Using tariffs to curb global carbon emissions, as Senate Democrats have proposed doing as part of a $3.5 trillion budget plan, is "a political gimmick, not a real response to climate change..."
I would hate to think they've slipped gimmicks into the budget or - and I shudder to consider - played politics with global warming.
One surmises at least part of AGW is the delighted rubbing together of hands by so many evil geniuses.
All that friction ain't making the earth any cooler.
that's why they have cardboard beds at the Japan Olympics, to stop friction.
Bravo.
If the 3.5 trillion doesn't change the weather, they can always spend more.
"Paul Hodgkins, a 38-year-old Florida man, was sentenced to eight months in prison on Monday for his role in the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol."
Only 8 months for being part of a HEAVILY ARMED INSURRECTION?!
Look, as a Koch / Reason libertarian of course I want to #EmptyThePrisons — but not when it comes to dangerous criminals like this. Honestly a life sentence would be appropriate.

3/5ths of them are.
Not sure what this says about me, but I laughed out loud 🙂
Flagged for racism.
"Paul Hodgkins, a 38-year-old Florida man, was sentenced to eight months in prison on Monday"
Minus 6.5 months of time already served?
I read that he voluntarily did 100 hours of community service after his arrest, so I'd assume he was out on bail and little to no time served would be warranted. 8 months and $2000 fine is pretty harsh though for what his involvement was.
Biden should commute/pardon sentences if he actually wants unity. And Hodgkins would be great start from all I read on him.
He took a selfie. Burn him.
He should be punished for being a 38-year-old man taking selfies more than anything he did at the Capitol.
Monumental stupidity. Taking a selfie while committing a felony.
Should it be a felony? Congress seems to get interrupted a lot.
Well he copped a plea. I have no idea how the law is written but it seems that barging into the chamber while they are in session and forcing them to flee is not kosher.
Exactly how many people were charged with barging into the Kavanaugh hearing much less "copping a plea" for 8 months in jail?
I'll give you a hint - it rhymes with hero....
Excuse me if I think that everything out elected representatives do should be 100% open to the public. No exceptions.
Funny how none of the people disrupting the capitol when Kavanaugh was confirmed were arrested for it.
https://twitter.com/barnes_law/status/1417240028158169107?s=19
8 months in prison for temporary trespass on a government building. That is 8 months longer than ALL OF THE SENTENCES COMBINED for every Kavanaugh trespasser and every Spygate perjurer, forger, fraudster, obstructor, spy, and criminal.
Not to mention the peaceful protesters that tried to burn down a federal courthouse in Portland.
Or a church or two in D.C.
https://www.kptv.com/news/da-charges-filed-against-10-people-arrested-during-protests-riots-in-portland/article_dd6bc7ca-c544-11eb-a970-2f20b3c9dcc1.html
Wait, so you don't understand the difference between an arrest and an actual sentencing?
https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-nearly-70-of-portland-rioters-had-charges-dropped-by-progressive-da
And this guy just got sentenced to four years in prison for his actions in a Sept. 23, 2020 riot in Portland.
Don't interrupt the narrative with contrary facts.
Don't make me pull out my chemistry book.
Unity?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
One can dream and use Biden's own words against him.
That only works if he remembers saying them, which he does not.

Love that movie
It was the first manned suborbital flight in human history with an all-civilian crew.
Unlike when the government does it, they could have wiped out all student loan debt with the cost of this joy ride!
Or made a start at Reparations!
Space Reparations.
Wait.... Branson had the military on board?
Also, I am pretty sure flat-earth guy's rocket flight was sub orbital. As we're our bike jumps when I was a kid.
That statement either had too many qualifiers or too few.
Yeah "the edge of space" at 250,000 feet up. That's almost 0.02% of the way to the moon!
Paul Hodgkins, a 38-year-old Florida man, was sentenced to eight months in prison on Monday for his role in the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol.
The cost of insurrecting our fragile democracy is pretty low I see.
He did say he was really really sorry. And he pled guilty.
From what I have seen few of those arrested are planning to go to trial.
Seems pretty high for someone who didn't break anything. The Hill cops opened the doors and let him in, and then he wandered around taking selfies.
If this isn't a harbinger of things to come:
https://www.npr.org/2021/07/19/1017916061/capitol-rioter-who-walked-on-senate-floor-on-jan-6-sentenced-to-8-months-in-pris

Eight fucking months for carrying a US flag into the Senate. While nobody in the BLM attack on the White House was even charged. While nobody in the invasion of the Kavenaugh hearings in the senate was even charged.
Mike Laursen must be fapping like a madman.
flag into the US Senate
The hill cops botched the situation. I think we could all see that. They were totally unprepared.
Or they did what they were supposed to do.
"Senate Could Pass a $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Bill This Week, Even Though There's No Agreement on How To Pay for It"
None of this would have occurred had Democrats and their left wing media coconspirators (including Reason) not rigged/stolen the 2020 election.
Yeah, Trump's infrastructure bill would have been bigger and more terrific, made by smart people, the smartest.
You got what you wanted; own it
I most specifically did not get what I wanted. I have not received anything political which I chose. Everyone I voted for failed to get elected. It's people like you who kill third parties with your us or them rhetoric. Politely, autocopulate.
So you got exactly what you wanted, to bitch because your idiotic idealistic choice lost to the greatest evil.
Well done.
So-called "stablecoins," a type of cryptocurrency that is pegged to a traditional currency or basket of assets
So the currency will be based on the paper standard?
So an ATM machine.
No, a printing press.
Great economic news from WaPo.
The U.S. is growing more unequal.
"The combined wealth of all households in the United States added up to $129.5 trillion in the first quarter of this year. The wealthiest 1 percent held 32.1 percent of the total, up from 23.4 percent in 1989."
Of course WaPo pretends to believe the concentration of wealth at the top is a "problem" to be "fixed." But this is another example of OpenBordersLiberal-tarian's First Law. As long as we keep billionaire-approved Democrats like Biden and Harris in charge, the richest people in the country will continue to get even richer.
#InDefenseOfBillionaires
imagine the GDP growth as Hunter makes more paintings.

Government lying to government. That's a check I can balance.
The IG report says he didn't tell the full story as to motivations and called it a lie.
This seems less of a care about than shit like Clapper lying. Biden won't even pull his BLM nominee for lying to Congress. Reid celebrated lying to congress.

There have been at least 67 recent positive tests among the more than 11,000 athletes expected to gather in Tokyo for the games.
Can't they compete over Zoom?
Just pass out the medals based on equity theory.
Or based on a Facebook algorithm. Think of the carbon reductions from no travel and no broadcasts.
That's a 0.61% positivity rate.
And among perhaps the most healthy and young populace imaginable.
Who are all vaccinated and asymptomatic. They only know because they are tested regularly regardless of symptoms.

A movie.....about a desert planet in space....that features no dark skinned people of any nationality.....Hard pass
It does not matter that there are POC performers in the movie. You also need skin tone diversity. And apparently there is not a single extremely dark skinned Black body anywhere onscreen.
#HollywoodMustDoBetter
Sun screen doesn't exist in the future.
Water played a vital role in the Fremen culture. Indeed, for Fremen, water was life. To conserve against the unnecessary loss of water in the desert, Fremen wore complex full-body filtration systems called stillsuits, which reclaimed the body's moisture. Additionally, specialized headgear prevented most of the normal loss through the scalp and forehead via perspiration, while masks and noseplugs reclaimed moisture from the wearers' breathing.
If you're basically never exposed to direct sunlight would there still be an evolution towards dark skin? Aren't Bedouins not particularly dark?
DING DING DING!
Does POC include green skin? Asking for a friend.
How do they vote?
Green, of course.
Do they smash a lot of things?
Yoda?
A movie…..about a desert planet in space….that features no dark skinned people of any nationality
Look at the anti-science nut. An insular population over time will always lack diversity. And people that spend the majority of their efforts avoiding solar radiation have no need for high melanin content. Exposure to the Arrakeen sun was deadly.
Mask up!
Best thread on Reason in years.
"There have been at least 67 recent positive tests among the more than 11,000 athletes expected to gather in Tokyo for the games."
It looks very likely that covid protocol rules for Olympic athletes and teams (i.e. banning athletes and/or entire teams from competing because of a potential exposure to someone who may or may not tested positive for covid) will create far more drama and controversy than the actual competition/games.
So will the Olympics strip medal winners of their medal(s) if they test positive for covid (as they do for athletes who fail drug tests)?
Look, one of the biggest perks of making the Olympic games is getting to live in the Olympic village with all of the other young hardbodied athletes from around the world. You will be there for two weeks and then likely never see them again.
If you cannot participate in the festival of free love, what is the point?
Saw a story about how the beds provided can only accommodate one. Guess the anti-sex decision makers aren’t very creative.
Japanese prudery + COVID fears. I think in Brazil they gave every athlete a box of condoms.
But a single bed is no barrier to boning. Did you skip college?
Have you seen these people? A phone booth with spikes on the walls wouldn't be an impediment.
In college went to find some "privacy" with a young lady in a secluded area of campus behind some hedges. Occupied. As was the next spot. And the next. And the next. 8 spots with hidden site lines around the bell tower, all occupied.
And that was just regular people who are 19. Add in "and they are not going to be on campus with you forever" so there is no clingy guy following you around, and no mattress lady?
Please....
I think in Brazil they gave every athlete a box of condoms.
You could put three boxes worth on your willie and it probably wouldn't be enough down there.
“Guess the anti-sex decision makers aren’t very creative.”
Japan apparently made the single person weight limit that of a sumo wrestler. Video of an Olympian testing the beds by jumping on them. Stayed up.
Bet there are a lot of broken bed frames with leftover handcuffs and soaked mattress with collapsed springs, too!
Medals for sport fucking?
Am waiting for the “tug on heartstrings” biopics about athletes with that special “human story” that were not allowed to compete after a positive test. The US team of course will be able to blame Trump.

Democrats in CA are so concerned that black conservative/libertarian Larry Elder will win Gov Newsome's recall election vote they are trying to keep him off the ballot.
https://townhall.com/tipsheet/leahbarkoukis/2021/07/20/larry-elder-update-n2592785
They kept him off because they claimed he didn't redact his personal tax returns correct.
The law makes it so Gavin Newsome doesn't even have to provide his returns.
Ever notice that Blaek conservatives have that same preachy, holier-than-thou smugness that white conservatives do?
Elder, Bongino, Spermin' Herman Cain, etc
At least they don't post kiddie porn links on internet boards, and pay the bets they lose.
Are you saying Elder is uppity?
Who knew being denied a spot in an election despite filling out all paper work for being a black conservative mean you were holier than thou.
Good take Pedo.
Sharpton, Kendi, Coates, Jackson, Farrakhan - humble and never self-satisfied, that group.
The smuggest people in society are white liberals. One can be excused for losing patience with them.
Probably because they’re smarter than you.
If you’re a known pedophile, why do you come here? And why doesn’t anyone here work on unmasking this scumbag so he can be thrown in prison?
I can see why Cali Dems are worried, since any black person scores as more equity-friendly than some gel-haired white guy.
It's hard to pull their favorite card, the race card in such instances. But the Democrats have never felt the need to comport with reality.
Expect to read in the New York Times and Atlantic that a vote for Larry Elder is a vote for white supremacy.
Paul Hodgkins, a 38-year-old Florida man, was sentenced to eight months in prison on Monday for his role in the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol. Hodgkins is the first person convicted of a felony related to the riots to be sentenced.
Prosecution admitted Hodgkins committed no assaults nor damaged any property. And he got 8 months. He was forced to make a statement about how he contributed to damaging the country. And reason has no opinion of this?
I linked to two stories yesterday. One of Kavanaugh protestors disrupting official proceedings and one of pdotestors interrupting certification in 2017.
The law Hodgkins is charged with is disruption. There is no requirement of it only being when other individuals causing problems. So ae have disparate treatment for the same act.
Again, the court and prosecutor admitted no vandalism or assaults from this individual.
Felony disruption?
Disruption of Congress is a felony with up to 20 years in prison.
it was congresses choice to stop not the protester. if congress had continued more than likely the protesters would have entered and watched. people only get violent when they are ignored
And I expect this is what most people expected to happen.
Looks like even recently that was just a misdemeanor. Maybe different variations depending on factors.
I expect the Democrats to try to get the old USSR crime of "hooliganism" into our statute books any time now.
Hmm, will there be gender and race qualifications for "hooligan"?
No, but political affiliation will continue to be an important, unwritten factor.
If all of the BLM and Antifa rioters and looters were sentenced to 8 months, violent crime in Democrat cities would sharply decline to the lowest in history.
And no impact on employment.
Well, except in the window repair industry.
No, they'd still be expecting their Soros money, even in lockup.
Democrats are rarely prosecuted.
Canada will allow vaccinated Americans to cross the border starting August 9. The Biden administration has yet to announce when it will reciprocate.
So ENB is pro vaccine passports?
I'm sure she's pro-penicillin passports for whorehouses, as well as stamped pages for discount programs.
He pleaded guilty last month to obstructing congressional proceedings -- specifically, the counting of the electoral votes, which he helped delay on January 6. He spent about 15 minutes inside the Senate chamber, wearing a Donald Trump shirt and carrying a Trump flag.
Why exactly was the death penalty taken off the table?
CNN is still referring to it as the "US Capitol insurrection", as is NPR. Meanwhile, the story of the completely defenseless woman who was shot in the throat by a Capitol police officer and died a slow death choking on her own blood remains unaddressed by any major news outlet.
The left has grown so bold as to rewrite history right before our eyes.
An outrageously false statement by the UK covid czar (claiming 60% of those hospitalized for covid had already received two vaccine doses) led to yesterday's sharp decline on Wall Street.

Wait... That can do that?????
I need to find me some government health officials!! Take a big short position.... Have them fumble a statement. Repeat a few times... And I am a gozillionaire.
Fauci is doing that weekly for free.
LOL, talk about your Freudian slips.
Like when fauci called covid19 a prototype?
You don't 'accidentally' say the exact opposite of what you meant to say and even the supposed correction is a fucking obfuscation. If 60% of the hospitalizations for COVID are unvaccinated, what exactly are the other 40%? According to anything I can find, the number of hospitalizations for COVID after vaccination is extremely small.
It is getting harder and harder to avoid conspiracy theories regarding 'health experts' and COVID. No rational person can attribute all of this nonsense to stupidity.
some one is lying to us. In UK those with covid are 40 to 60% vaccinated while in the U.S. only the un vaccinated are getting covid, surely both can't be correct. some one in either country are lying or both are lying purely for the political control of the people.
First, some of the vaccines in the UK are less effective than MRNA. So I'd expect a slight increase. Slight. Not 40%.
Something's not right with those numbers either way. Breakthrough infections causing hospitalization in the US are so small as to be a statistical anomaly. LA right now just reported 100% of the people in LA County hospitals with covid are unvaccinated.
These data don't jibe.
For US data, since I'm here, it's 5500 breakthrough cases hospitalized or fatal. 1500 of those were asymptomatic and in the hospital for other reasons but got tested and reported. 4500 of those are over 65 years of age.
Out of what, 170 million fully vaccinated Americans? 40% in UK hospitals seems nuts. It ain't right.
According to most sources, Cuomo was to be "interviewed" on Saturday regarding his harassment of some 9 women. It's Tuesday.
No information about that at all? Not one reporter even asked Cuomo for his obligatory 'I didn't do it and won't do it again'?
Nobody wrote nothing?
Serial rapists Donnie-boy Trump and Matt Gaetz showed Cuomo that if you just ignore your accusers they eventually go away on their own.
They learned it from watching the Clintons.
The Clintons paid off one of Bill’s victims.
the other victims of the Clintons are dead or missing
turd lies; it's what turd does. If turd posts statistics, they are guaranteed to be outright lies or cherry-picked to favor the Ds.
Regardless, turd is incapable of commenting without lying as the steaming pile of lefty shit did here.
Wow. A biden and a Cuomo cultist.

Boehm failed to state that the House Democrats have explicitly made passing he $1.9 trillion infrastructure bill contingent on the Senate passing the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill. And the focus of that pressure is not primarily the Republicans. The progressives in the House, notably AOC, have threatened to withhold support for the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill because it's too small. She wants $6 trillion for the Green New Deal. The other focus is on Democrats senators, like Manchin, who are on board with the infrastructure bill but is reluctant to support the Green New Deal spending in the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill.
In short, the $1.9 trillion infrastructure bill contains spending Manchin wants because it connects West Virginia to the interstate highway system and makes them more attractive to manufacturing and distribution, but he doesn't want to vote for Green New Deal spending in the $3.5 trillion bill because his primary support in West Virginia is from the coal miners and their unions. So, the Democrats are telling him that he can't get the infrastructure bill unless he votes for Green New Deal spending.
I don't know why Reason staff can't seem to get the story straight. When five Republican Senators out of 49, none of which are in the Republican leadership and three of which are never-Trumpers Romney, Susan Collins, and Murkowski, say they'll vote to bring the $1.9 trillion infrastructure bill to a vote, they want to pretend that the bill is bipartisan. On the other hand, when the Democrats are trying to pressure reluctant Democrats to vote for the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill with all its Green New Deal and entitlement expansions, they act like the point is getting the Republicans on board.
They did drop the spending on new IRS agents to hassle us all in order to get some Republicans on board, but for the millionth time, the Democrats can pass all of this spending without a single Republican vote. Let that sink it in for a moment.
The reason the primary focus of these contortions is not the Republicans is because no Republican needs to vote for it in order for it to pass. They want Republicans to vote for it so that Democrats in red and purple districts and states can hide behind the claim of bipartisanship come November of 2022, but they're ready to move forward without ant Republicans and move the infrastructure into the reconciliation bill. This isn't about the Republicans!
Reason staff still seem to have a psychological block when it comes to confronting the reality of a one party government. The Democrats are like Cthulhu in their indifference to the Republicans. They have control of the House, the Senate, and the White House, and if they don't pass the Green New Deal and expand Medicare, etc., it's because they don't want to. The Republicans have no more say in this than I do about whether it rains on the Padres game today. The question is whether the Democrats support this, and if Manchin isn't on board, chances are that the Republicans won't save them.
Talking about sticking HR1 (elections) and amnesty into the reconciliation bill can't help either.
"Talking about sticking HR1 (elections) and amnesty into the reconciliation bill can’t help either."
My understanding was that they can't stick that into a budget reconciliation bill--the point of making it a reconciliation bill is that budget reconciliation isn't subject to the filibuster. If it's an item that isn't about spending and taxes, it's subject to the filibuster.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
That is the letter of the law.
Which is decided by the senate parliamentarian.
If she decides it is financial... It is in.
So... Do you trust a nonpartisan Washington insider to call balls and strikes fairly?
They can also do what they are claiming... Make HR1 into a spending item by saying no state can get federal funds if they don't comply with the DNC rules.
And then
If she rules against it....
There is a procedural mechanism to change the interpretation to allow it using only 51 votes. It is unclear if this would succeed.
"The Senate parliamentarian ruled Thursday that Democrats can't include the $15 per hour minimum wage hike in the COVID-19 economic relief package. It's a major setback for Democrats such as Senator Bernie Sanders, who had argued it could be included even in the budget reconciliation process."
----CBS News, February 26, 2021
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/minimum-wage-covid-relief-bill-senate-parliamentarian/
She has already drawn a line between increasing the minimum wage and budget bills, and H.R. 1 is less like a budget matter than the minimum wage.
I think you're speculating.
Yes, she theoretically could rule that H.R. 1 is a budget issue. I don't see any good reason to conclude that she will do that, but I see a good reason to think that she won't.
Where did you read that they were considering folding H.R. 1 into the reconciliation bill?
Sometimes, politicians say really stupid things. I once saw Maxine Waters go after Mr. Toyoda for refusing to admit that Americans make higher quality cars than the Japanese. This was after he (and others) explained to her that the cars under scrutiny had been manufactured in the United States. She could not get her head around the fact that Toyotas are manufactured in the United States by Americans.
Just because a politician says something with a straight face to a reporter, and a reporter buys it and sells it with conviction to the American people doesn't mean it isn't ignorant and stupid. Sometimes, it just means the politician in question is an idiot and the reporter has no critical thinking skills.
P.S. And sometimes I'm wrong. And if that's the case, I want to know.
Bernie, AOC and a few others have been "calling for it". Whatever that means.
I have not seen Schumer or Pelosi making such claims, although I did see something about Pelosi hinting about using the "strings attached" strategy to get more of their agenda through.
If I were a republican in the Senate, there is zero chance I would give them the cover of bipartisanship on this. They already came out of the infrastructure bill meeting and immediately pledged not to stick to the deal they just struck.
Bernie is the head of the budget committee, and he might be trying to intimidate the parliamentarian on a budget issue.
Just sometimes?
The parliamentarian should say no, but nuclear option lets them overrule them.
Yeah, they could get rid of the filibuster.
There are at least two Democrats in the Senate who have publicly stated they don't want to do that, so, again, if the Democrats don't get rid of the filibuster, add Puerto Rico as a state, pack the Supreme Court, pass the Green New Deal, etc., it's because they don't want to do so.
The Republicans are no more in control of that than they are in control of the weather.
Regardless, if they're having so much trouble getting Democrats on board, I suspect they'll have trouble attracting more than a couple of Republicans--and I suspect fewer Republicans will vote for the reconciliation deal than voted to impeach Donald Trump.
Sinema is a maybe. But Manchin is a fucking rat. He has been caught multiple times on party calls open to "reforming" the filibuster, essentially ending it.
I'm not saying it can't happen, and I've repeatedly bemoaned the fact that we need to depend on the promises of Democrat politicians to save us from disaster.
For the time being, everyone seems to be behaving as if the filibuster is still a real thing. I suppose we'll see what happens IF IF IF the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill fails in the Senate.
They might use that as an absurd pretext to get rid of the filibuster. For the time being, they seem to be going along with its continued existence.
I should add that the reason they dropped the spending on expanding hiring of IRS agents in the infrastructure bill to pay for it appears to have been to get Senator Jon Tester on board to support it.
John Tester is not a Republican. John Tester is the Democrat Senator from Montana.
Another day, another post from Ken: "Why can't Reason treat Democrats as the cartoon villains that they really are? Why can't Reason give Republicans more love, like I do every day?"
Substitute 'jeff' for turd:
turd lies; it’s what turd does. If turd posts statistics, they are guaranteed to be outright lies or cherry-picked to favor the Ds.
Regardless, turd is incapable of commenting without lying as the steaming pile of lefty shit did here.
You seem really upset at people pointing out actual actions democrats are taking.
chemtard radical deathfat standing up for his Democrat friends and neighbors again.
"Why can’t Reason treat Democrats as the cartoon villains that they really are?"
Probably one of the more reasonable things you've posted.
I like how Ken accuses the entire Reason staff of having a collective psychological block, with no self awareness at all.
Watching Mike laursen try to cope with his inferiority is great entertainment
I realize you're trying to imply that it's Ken who has some sort of psychological block, but he's not the one reactively shilling for a political party. That's you, you fucking cheapshot.
Funny, he never said any of that. You write a lot of this kind of nonsense. No wonder you’re so hated by the other commenters.
Your posts are more informative than reason's articles.
Boehm failed</b?,natch.
They never figured out how to pay for the Republican's gift to the wealthy in 2017 so who really cares anymore. We'll just print more money evidently.
Man, I wasn't sure that bullshit could be stacked that high, but as a bullshit champion, you've done it!
Letting you keep your own money is a gift.
You didn't build that money!
"Republican’s gift to the wealthy in 2017"
And what gift was that Tony?
Only in deranged socialist fever dreams does "not stealing" become interchangeable with "giving"
Only in retarded fascists minds (like raspberries and Tony) did the tax cuts only go to the wealthy and federal revenues didn’t increase every year since then (estimates even show an increase last year).

In a 2019 interview, Nikole Hannah-Jones @nhannahjones, whose 1619 Project is widely taught in schools, said:
"In places that are truly at least biracial countries, Cuba actually has the least inequality. That's largely due to socialism - which I'm sure no one wants to hear." [Link]
There is a ton of easy to digest commentary about how keeping everyone equally poor is a bad idea. I recommend "the Trees" by Rush. Less than 5 minutes and you'd have a better understanding than this nut job.
Jones obviously thinks that economic equality is so important that we need a crushing dictatorship.
You will note that none of the leftist accolites who sing the peaises of these Marxist dictatorships are looking to emigrate.
Meanwhile, people looking to leave Cuba still risk their lives in makeshift boats.... So much so that Biden had to warn them that they will never be allowed in.
I wonder if she has an explanation for the disparity.
This is known as “misinformation” and “disinformation.”
Next will be cisinformation!
Not on Facebook!
Next will be cisinformation!
Get the straight story!
How's that equality between party insiders and everyone else?
Disgusting.
After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro acknowledged the prevalence of racism and launched a set of reforms intended to eliminate racial disparity in public spaces, education and employment. However, he failed to adequately address its cultural and societal roots. After a few years, he declared his policies a success and made any further discussion of race or racial inequality a counterrevolutionary crime, insisting that talk of race would divide the nation. During Castro’s reign, the silence on issues of racism made further debate or improvements impossible, countering the initial benefits of his reforms. Even though the Castro government achieved more for blacks in fifty years than previous administrations had in the last 400 years, [5] his policies only addressed issues of unequal access without changing structural biases underlying society. With a new wave of economic changes affecting the country, race and racism are once again becoming important issues in Cuba.
Her doctorate should be revoked.
Obviously, she's never spoken with Afro-Cubans in Cuba about discrimination there.

It's just 2 weeks to slow the spread.
It's just to flatten the curve.
It's just a mask.
It's just until a vaccine is available.
It's just until the elderly are vaccinated.
It's just until everybody is.
It's just an app for your safety.
It's just a social credit score.
I like that guy.
"The opening of strip clubs correlates with a drop in the number of sex crimes that occur in the same neighborhood"
When ice cream sales increase, so do reported rapes. This has nothing to do with warm weather, but with Ben and Jerry being rapists, right?
I have to say, being their being sufficient money that people are willing to open a business, the increased foot traffic at all hours of the night, and increased presence of security bouncers and police around strip clubs certainly have as much if not more to do with any change rather than actual diversion.
Given the element that often finances and actually controls those sorts of establishments I find it entirely unsurprising that nearby street crime declines.
So just how much carbon dioxide, methane and other gases (that are causing climate change) were emitted by Jeff Bezos during his space ride yesterday?
https://www.newsmax.com/finance/streettalk/bezos-blue-origin-space-voyage/2021/07/20/id/1029247/
I suspect was more than some nations emit during an entire year.
But nobody seems to care that the massive carbon footprint of billionaires (who want to impose economically disastrous rules on Americans) is tens/hundreds of thousands times greater than what is emitted by 99% of humans.
I'll take your bet, and Communist China as the counter nation.
Uh, no.
First of all, the BE-3 engine on the New Shepard uses hydrogen and oxygen as fuel and oxidizer, so the exhaust is water. (And yes, water is a green house gas, and contributes the majority of the greenhouse effect, but we don't want to talk about that, right?)
Second, even if an equivalent flight used the BE-4 engine, burning methane, the fuel/oxider load is about 100,000 lbs. For comparison, a trans-Atlantic 747 flight burns about 150,000 lbs of fuel.
Third, if a bunch of regular, 99%-er people drive about 50 miles and burn 2 gallons (12 lbs), then about 8500 people use more stuff--and emit more nasty "chemicals"--than one Bezos flight. Given that about 200,000,000 Americans drive every day, it would take more than 20,000 daily Bezos space flights to equal the impact.
This is not climate czar John Kerry’s weekly jaunts.
Much of the discourse surrounding the impending success or collapse of the infrastructure bill will focus on what it means for Biden's promise that he could bring both sides together to, in his words, do big things.
Everybody wants to build a new highway, nobody wants to fix the potholes. Take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves.
No emission without sequestration!
Full body condoms?
So, the narrative is that so many Republicans don't want to get vaccinated because they have honest, legitimate fears and concerns about an experimental new vaccine.
Well, here is a new poll:
https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2021/07/15/why-wont-americans-get-vaccinated-poll-data
Interestingly:
51% of Americans who said they definitely will not get vaccinated, believes that the vaccine contains microchips
49% say that vaccines cause autism
And of course 85% say the threat of COVID-19 was exaggerated for political reasons.
I think the takeaway here is that a lot of them have some very goofy beliefs about vaccines (microchips, autism) that is not based on sober, serious concerns but on irrational fear and paranoia.
Furthermore, since so many think that the threat of the virus was exaggerated for political reasons, they think that the "actual" virus is no big deal. It's just the flu, etc., etc. So why should they get a vaccine for "just the flu"?
At this point I am not sure what would persuade people that the virus is both (a) real, and (b) more dangerous than "just the flu". Already COVID cases are surging among pretty much exclusively the unvaccinated populations alone. I guess what has to happen is that they have to see people dying of COVID with their own eyes, not like what they see on the "fake librul news media", before they think about getting vaccinated.
And please:
Please get vaccinated if you haven't done so already.
We in the liberty community are the PR team for the concept of liberty.
If others see our example and interpret "liberty" to mean "the freedom to be an asshole to everyone else around me", then they aren't going to be supportive of the concept of liberty and will vote to restrict it, just like we see now with people supporting mask mandates and the like. Use your liberty wisely and responsibly, and choose to get vaccinated, if not for yourself, but for others around you who see your example and interpret it accordingly.
Your obese, waddling ass is certainly the most at risk, so I can understand why you're so freaked out about it.
Considering you're too fat to even go outside, you shouldn't have anything to worry about, though.
That's the type of serious mature response I've come to expect from the right-leaning 'libertarians' around here.
Have you been vaccinated?
I already said I was several weeks ago, fat boy. Unlike you, however, I don't need to restort to emotional manipulation and sophistry as a cheap disguise for my own fears of mortality.
Anyone hear anything from India lately? Has the entire population dropped dead from the Indian variant yet, or did cases plummet after an initial surge, like every other instance since the Chinese infected the planet?
Right, sure. Ad hominem is a terrific substitute for logical argument, isn't that right?
Make a logical argument and you'll get fewer posts dunking on you on you like you dunk donuts.
Oh fuck you. It was a mistake to even engage with you. You're just another Mean Girl asshole around here.
If two or three people point out that you're a pathetic, sanctimonious, whiny piece of lefty shit, it could be them.
When everybody does, it's YOU.
Jeff, it's you.
Logical argument. You mean like recognizing obesity as the primary comorbidity in many medical risks and thinking it better to encourage people to not be fat fucks instead of encouraging everyone else to mitigate your risk for you?
Is it really ad hominem though, and not just casual observation?
So why did you get vaccinated?
What the fuck business is it of yours, fat boy? You're not a friend, you're the enemy.
He is right. You'd lower your risk of death way more from not eating cookies.
You’re critiquing his response after the drivel you wrote about Ken Schulz above. You have no room to talk.
Jeff isn’t carbon neutral so it is just hand waving.
Didn't the most recent poll show that it was sophisticated urban atheists least likely to get the jab?
And yet here you are alluding the blame is because of those dastardly, redneck x-tians.
He skipped yesterday's roundup for that reason.
"..Please get vaccinated if you haven’t done so already.
We in the liberty community are the PR team for the concept of liberty..."
Fuck off, self-righteous piece of lefty shit.
Do you have any idea how sanctimonious you sound? Give it up already
Jeff attempts to utilize empathy when the bullshit he spews is easily countered and laughed at. Last year he empathize woth someone who lost their jobs due to shut downs while advocating for shut downs.
He is full of shit.
You are a statist and not in the liberty community
I'm far more in the liberty community than you will ever be, Team Red bootlicker
No, you're in the gunt community, fat boy.
Jeff. I had COVID. I've had the vaccine, and I've had the flu.
Out of the three, COVID gave me the least effects. The flu and the vaccine put me down for most of a week. COVID only gave me one day of feeling ill and weeks of a nuisance cough that wouldn't go away.
Yes, I know it's a random disease, but my experience is typical of the vast majority of cases. When people distrust the government and media and only go based on personal observation, it's little wonder that they think COVID is overblown.
Would you recommend that your associates get vaccinated?
I'd recommend you fuck off.
This.

The only proper response to a moralistic busy body.
LOL this is insane. You'd think I asked you to stay a virgin until marriage or something.
I think the takeaway here is that a lot of them have some very goofy beliefs about vaccines (microchips, autism) that is not based on sober, serious concerns but on irrational fear and paranoia.
An alternative explanation is that a lot of them are offering up "goofy beliefs" to the pollsters after getting tired of saying "This is America, Jack, and you can't make me!"
The most likely explanation is they are under 55 and not obese so they don't think their risk is very high. And they are right.
Yeah, lots of this. One of the enduring lessons of 2016/2020 should be that a large and growing segment of Republicans doesn't mind lying to pollsters.
Do you have any evidence of this?

Jeff won't read this, as he prefers ignorance. But here is the report from last year's polling.

You've really never heard of the shy Trump voter? Come on now.
I've heard claims that they may exist but no real evidence.
I’m going to guess that anything offered as evidence wouldn’t be enough for you.
Or they have gotten tired of people dismissing another's own personal assessment of risk vs. benefit. As if their opinion somehow counts for more.
Informed consent is always an individual matter. Anyone who cannot respect that is telling you they respect nothing.
And of course 85% say the threat of COVID-19 was exaggerated for political reasons.
I mean, is there any evidence that this wasn't actually the case? The stewards of our country have a baseless fear of their own charges.
I guess what has to happen is that they have to see people dying of COVID with their own eyes, not like what they see on the “fake librul news media”, before they think about getting vaccinated.
chemjeff, model of good faith.
People have seen it with their own eyes and draw different conclusions than you would prefer. Christ, I was on a webinar yesterday about my company's mandatory vaccine policy and the med staff executives were getting peppered with concerns by people who work in COVID wards. And this isn't Appalachia, it's northern NJ - arguably the hardest hit part of the entire country, and a reliably Democratic area.

This same fat fuck has argued that no one learned about racism in American until the last few years, said that having to walk into a DMV to get an ID for voting was too onerous, whined that Oberlin College getting stuck with a multi-million dollar damages bill for defaming a bakery shop was unfair, and complained that not letting in child molesters as refugees was hurting their liberty.
Homeboy is so firmly stuck in his blue-voting neighborhood bubble that he's suffering from Stockholm Syndrome thinks anything that hurts Democrats just isn't fair.
And since you're the "enemy", we can count on you to say truthful things about me, right?
God you really are an asshole.
Why, because he uses statements you've made against you?
I've seen you say all that
Every single thing I mentioned there are things you've actually said.
No, they are lies and gross distortions. About what I would expect from someone who considers me an "enemy".
no one learned about racism in American until the last few years
That is a lie, I never said that.
said that having to walk into a DMV to get an ID for voting was too onerous,
That is a lie, I never said that.
whined that Oberlin College getting stuck with a multi-million dollar damages bill for defaming a bakery shop was unfair,
This one actually has a kernel of truth to it. It was a little bit unfair because it took agency away from the students themselves and presumed that school administrators brainwashed students to do their bidding. What is with you and this hate towards Oberlin? Did you get rejected from there or something?
complained that not letting in child molesters as refugees was hurting their liberty.
And no I cannot expect you to discuss this issue maturely. All you will do is make juvenile demagogic insults.
Go join the Mean Girls club where you belong.
So you admit that you’re for letting child molesters enter the US from foreign countries? That’s disgusting. Why would you keep coming here after admitting that? No one like child molesters. Except for maybe you and that Buttplug commenter.

I don't come here that often anymore and even I have seen him argue that having to get an ID at the DMV was too onerous for black folks. He specifically said he is ok with ID requirements so long as the ID can be brought to the poor - his argument was "why wouldn't a college ID work?" - as if getting a college ID is easier than getting a state ID from the DMV.
Fuck him anyway - he lies so much at this point it's got to be pathological.
It was a little bit unfair because it took agency away from the students themselves and presumed that school administrators brainwashed students to do their bidding.
LOL, let's have a recap:
What is with you and this hate towards Oberlin? Did you get rejected from there or something?
What is it with you and not being slim? Did a Chad give you wedgies in high school or something?
And no I cannot expect you to discuss this issue maturely. All you will do is make juvenile demagogic insults.
You clowned yourself by taking that stance. Don't expect to ever live it down. It's not like we don't have enough pedophiles posting on this board as it is.
Don't forget, Ashli Babbit deserved to be killed by police for unarmed trespassing.
He said that?
Yes he did - on multiple occasions.
Christ, I was on a webinar yesterday about my company’s mandatory vaccine policy and the med staff executives were getting peppered with concerns by people who work in COVID wards.
The 2 most recent cases at my parents' church were the doctors that work on the (relatively) newly-formed medical advisory committee. They haven't been attending in-person services since March '20. They both got the vaccine as early as possible. 2 weeks ago, both got sick. No congestion, no anosmia. Both were certain they had contracted the delta variant. Neither could explain how/where they contracted it. Both results came back negative. Idiotic doomsaying fundamentalists? Idiotic hypochondriac medical professionals? Bad testing? Take your pick!
Rhinovirus are still a thing. More common in the summer than coronavirus too.
I mean, is there any evidence that this wasn’t actually the case?
Well the question is whether it was exaggerated for political reasons. It was exaggerated in some cases out of an overabundance of caution, but that is not the same thing.
People have seen it with their own eyes and draw different conclusions than you would prefer.
Like what? That it's "just the flu"?
The dangers were exaggerated by elected officials to increase the popularity of and compliance with the proposed strategy of public health officials: aggressive use of NPIs across all age groups. That's exaggerating for political purposes, period.
Like what? That it’s “just the flu”?
"I'm 24 years old and in perfect health, but the people that show up here are either 80 lbs overweight or over 80 years old. The nurses on my wing all got knocked out for three days after getting the shot. I've also already had COVID and it wasn't bad. I prefer to take my chances."
The dangers were exaggerated by elected officials to increase the popularity of and compliance with the proposed strategy of public health officials: aggressive use of NPIs across all age groups. That’s exaggerating for political purposes, period.
What *political agenda* does it serve to ask you to do things that make it less likely that you get sick? This is absurd. Is it "serving a political agenda" to ask you to brush your teeth? Eat your vegetables? Is EVERYTHING a "political agenda"? This is paranoid claptrap. This is you WANTING to find political demons around every corner.
I’ve also already had COVID and it wasn’t bad. I prefer to take my chances.”
So this person is relying on anecdotal evidence and is apparently unaware that the vaccine gives MORE antibodies, and more consistently, than the antibodies from a prior COVID infection, PARTICULARLY if it was a mild infection in the first place. It is based on anecdote and fear.
Reinfection barely exists, and tends to be mild, and everything the democrats do is political.
What *political agenda* does it serve to ask you...
Ask me to what? Close down the entire economy? That serves the political agenda of removing someone from the Whitehouse by making reelection impossible.
But then again you knew that and are just obfuscating as normal and acting like you have never been presented this information before - even though it's been handed to you in this comment section at least a dozen times over the past year.
Seriously - you just cannot help yourself, can you? Does lying run in the family? Maybe it's congenital?
Whatever the cause, it's all you know.
Well that and ad hominems like the full of lies screed about Ken Shultz above.
I guess what has to happen is that they have to see people dying of COVID with their own eyes, not like what they see on the “fake librul news media”, before they think about getting vaccinated.
The average flu season in our house sees between 1 and 3-4 cases (that's at an 80% vaccination rate). So far, nobody in our house has caught COVID. That's despite being in protracted, close contact, without masks, with more than a dozen people who've had it (within the two-week window). Half were in the high-morbidity age demographic. 2 would've had non-obesity-related comorbidities. 0 deaths. If my aunt in her mid-70s, who survived cancer, had her colon removed, and goes in for regular dialysis can contract it on a Friday and host Christmas the following Friday, I'll probably be OK. If my Uncle wants to get the vaccine, that's his perogative. If you want to see bodies piling up, you're going to have to come up with something stronger than COVID.
And of course 85% say the threat of COVID-19 was exaggerated for political reasons.
this is indisputably true. Here's just one very minor example:
https://abc7news.com/covid-death-count-alameda-county-deaths-19-cases/10755419/
summary: Alameda County Health Department over-reported deaths from the Wuhan Virus by ONE THIRD, and knew it, and failed to adjust the numbers for MONTHS, and (in other sources which you can Google) even came out and openly admitted the reason was to exaggerate the dangers to the public! You can't make this up.
Quote from the article:
As an example, Balram explained "a resident who had COVID-19 but died due to another cause, like a car accident, this person would be included in the total number of reported COVID-19 deaths for Alameda County."
And most critical theory supporters believe there is a centuries-old conspiracy against whatever protected but picked-on class they belong to that controls every moment of their lives.
So who is more insane? And dangerous?
Wow, you are actually trying to throw CRT as a diversion into a discussion about COVID-19 vaccines.
It ties in. Last year, when Trump was president, many democrats, including Biden, suggested the vaccine wouldn’t be safe. Many said that blacks would be used as guinea pigs to test it. Conjuring up memories of the Tuskegee experiments.
All of this was retconned out of existence after Biden became president. A lot of phrasing now suggests that the Biden administration were the ones who got the vaccines to market.
Senate Could Pass a $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Bill This Week, Even Though There's No Agreement on How To Pay for It
Probably because they don't plan to pay for it. They aren't even pretending anymore.
Look at the huge borrowing sprees every other major country and multinational corporation is engaged in right now. It's almost like they know something.
Sorry for the misfire before. We were hearing a lot, and a lot was up in the air.
So you were talking shit, but you call it a "misfire" and excuse it by suggesting it wasn't your fault you didn't know it was shit? How about if you're hearing a lot and a lot of it is up in the air just keeping your mouth shut until things settle down? Because you're a typical journalist who thinks it's more important to be first rather than to be right and who needs to know the facts when you've already decided what the story is going to be?
Wait, Sean Hannity is urging me to get the vaccine? Well, this changes everything! Sure, I know the guy's not a doctor or a scientist or even particularly smart, but he knows karate. Karate! That's all I need to hear.
I am pretty sure his actual point was that censoring people from asking legitimate questions about the vaccine or covid is counterproductive. This was the throat clear, a-la Robby Soave, before the screed about questions that should be addressed instead of hidden.
He might have stayed at a Holiday Inn at one time...
Rand Paul went at it with Fauci again. He'll do anything to avoid a straight answer to growth of function questions.
The way the gain of function research is done, they passage the virus through a sequence of animals closer to humans until they get a strain that can infect humans.
Our current partial vaccination strategy likely has the same effect, allowing enough virus to circulate to select a strain that can evade the immunity from prior strains and from the vaccine while also selecting for greater infectivity.
A heartfelt congratulations to President “Sleepy Joe” Biden on making it through the first six months. I devoutly pray to all of the deities every single day for his continued survival, and that he can somehow make it through 42 more.
In other words, please please PLEASE don’t die on us, you old bastard.
Yes. Willie Brown’s chew toy would be even worse. Biden has subpar intellect and is senile, but he doesn’t sound like a complete bitch with every syllable that he utters.
How the Danish Left Adopted a Far-Right Immigration Policy
In an effort to outflank the populist right, the ruling Social Democrats have adopted one of the harshest refugee policies in the world.
https://foreignpolicy.com/2021/07/12/denmark-refugees-frederiksen-danish-left-adopted-a-far-right-immigration-policy/
Shockingly sensible policy by the Danes.
What made it "far-right"?
On the continuum between open borders and ridding the country of goobacks the latter is "far right" of course.
Both are impractical.
Weird. I didn't know Cesar Chavez was far right.
You didn't answer my question. You just blurted out a few proggy platitudes.
What made it “far-right”?
As in Australia, both the Social Democrats and the center-right Venstre, the other major party traditionally in charge of Danish governments, are increasingly in agreement over harsh immigration policies. The Danish government hasn’t said where these centers would be, but the immigration minister signed a memorandum with Rwanda, a country under scrutiny from international human rights organizations, to cooperate concerning immigration in April.
turd lies; it’s what turd does. If turd posts statistics, they are guaranteed to be outright lies or cherry-picked to favor the Ds.
Regardless, turd is incapable of commenting without lying as the steaming pile of lefty shit did here.
Is anyone working on finding his true identity so the cops can nail him for child porn (or possibly worse)?
The hicklib pederast is late to the party. Denmark's been requiring indoctrination in civic nationalism for immigrants and refugees for a while now.
It's only considered "far-right" because it doesn't reflect the rootless cosmopolitanism of the Davos crowd.

Online activity by right-wing extremists in Canada rose last year during the pandemic, despite efforts by governments and social media companies to curb extremism and hate speech, according to a new report.
The report also found that right-wing extremists in Canada are being influenced by their increasingly violent counterparts in the U.S.
"This raises the concern that an emboldened and increasingly violent extreme right in the U.S. could help to inspire similar activity in Canada, as Canadian right-wing extremists look to their U.S. counterparts for inspiration," wrote the authors of the new report from the U.K.-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue, set to be made public later this week.

Gretzky to Kurri ...
Kurri is Finnish.
Yes but the Oilers didn't play there.
Ooh maybe they'll walk around their parliament with flags too.
Paranoid leftist fuck.
Or douse you in maple syrup.
Meanwhile, left-wing extremists can apparently do what they want.
These assholes are pissing on us and telling us it's raining (I like that better than "gaslighting"). After a year full of left-wing violence we're supposed to believe the right is the real danger?
Not to deny that there are some nasty people on the far right, but everyone hates them already and I'm not seeing much violence there at all.
Right-wing extremist groups become a hyped danger whenever a Democrat is elected. Remember all those racists who hated Obama's policies because he's black, and all those racists who hated Clinton for being the first black president?
The difference though is that this time the right-wingers actually went and did something stupid, which gives the government an excuse to react.
I mean... they were all wearing skirts. Stop blaming the criminal for assaulting them.
Did I get your argument right? We can't blame the democrats because the conservatives gave them an excuse? Because that's what you just said.
I think it's more an observation than a should kind of thing.
Absolutely should blame the democrats. But I'd tend to agree that the Jan 6 dickheads didn't help things much and gave them excuses for more authoritarianism that would have been hard to sell otherwise.
"But I’d tend to agree that the Jan 6 dickheads didn’t help things much and gave them excuses for more authoritarianism that would have been hard to sell otherwise."
Would you also tend to agree that Reason, along with the majority of 'journalism' giving "mostly peaceful" murder, arson, theft, and riot a pass for months on end might have given other people the idea that it was an acceptable course of action?
You mean murder, arson, theft and rioting are ok because they did it first?
That does seem to be the prevailing attitude amongst Trump supporters.
Yes. It's dickheads all the way down. I can understand how some people might have thought that political violence was OK now. That doesn't excuse any bad behavior. But I'd say it's at least part of an explanation for the behavior.
It probably shouldn't but it still just kind of amazes me the level of hypocritical bullshit people can sustain. Nope, nothing else at all has happened in the past year. Just some idiots getting unruly at the capitol in the worlds shittiest, least likely to succeed "insurrection" ever.
How could they be trespassing? It's a public building. They did absolutely nothing wrong. I mean, it was just like a guided tour except there was no guide. Then politicians and cops freaked out for no reason at all, an innocent woman got shot for no reason at all, and all the vandalism that happened was in fact done by antifa infiltrators.
THEY DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG!!!!!!!!11!!1!!
You seem to show up with the primary goal of showing what a dishonest piece of shit you are.
You prove it regularly.
"THEY DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG"
Pretty much. You're finally getting it.
If it was an insurrection, or if insurrection was the goal, those people showed up woefully under armed for the occasion. And since they were conservative, the argument that none of them own a firearm is probably retarded.
The Bundy standoff was more of an insurrection than the capitol, but I guess that was more tolerable because reasons.
Resistance, protest, and disruption of government is only insurrection if the writer loves the specific government targeted.
-Captain Obvious
Incompetence in pulling off a crime or coup is not an excuse.
???
But you guys pulled off your coup successfully.
But not actually doing anything in the furtherance of the supposed intended crime should mean something. What did they actually do that could conceivably have led to the election getting overturned and Trump staying in office?
I'm not saying they are right or good, but I don't see them as any worse than any of the other violent protestors from the past year who got off with a slap on the wrist. I don't think it's unreasonable to call the political prisoners.
"Incompetence in pulling off a crime or coup is not an excuse."
Accusing someone of armed robbery when they are "armed" with facial tissue is the mark of a real piece of lefty shit, lefty shit.
Sarcasmic, White Mike and Chemleft always refuse to answer the question of how something is an insurrection if the "insurrectionists" don't have any weapons. Not even a pointed rock or sharp stick.
The Capitol police had guns, but all sarc's insurrectionists had were ploofy flags and cell phones.

The government doesn't actually need an excuse, they do what they want.
Given that 'protesters' that burned all sorts of things to the ground haven't been caught, nor are they even being sought out, seems to make that obvious.
If burning a police station to the ground is a protest, it seems absurd that trespassing at the capitol is a revolt.
The government doesn’t actually need an excuse, they do what they want.
"Aw shucks, those politicians were going to have soldiers occupy the capital and extend the jurisdiction of the capital police anyway. January 6 had absolutely nothing at all to do with anything."
Given that ‘protesters’ that burned all sorts of things to the ground haven’t been caught, nor are they even being sought out, seems to make that obvious.
You mean government takes it more seriously when they're the ones under attack, and they're more likely to prosecute people caught on camera in lit rooms than not on camera at night? Well.... I never!
If burning a police station to the ground is a protest, it seems absurd that trespassing at the capitol is a revolt.
Yeah, it's not like they were trying to prevent the certification of a peaceful transition of power.
It is pretty amusing to watch you make a ton of excuses for the government out of one side of your face while damning the government out of the other side. Make up your mind.
All I did was make fun of you. But if you think I was actually talking about government then go ahead. I won't stop you.
Someone needs to sit down and explain sarcasm to sarcasmic.

I mean the Capitol building with congress in session? Which is going to bring down the wrath of the FBI, federal prosecutors, the whole damn federal government. It is like smashing up Don Corleone's house and car with a sledgehammer.
"...I mean the Capitol building with congress in session?..."
Yeah, shame on those protesters protesting when the people against whom they're protesting arr *THERE*!

You're fucking pathetic.
trying to prevent the certification of a peaceful transition of power
Not you, nor any of the other fuckwits that spout this utter garbage have ever explained how a protest was going to prevent that from happening.
You solipsistic lefties and the government autocrats and the anus-licking media were flabbergasted that people would have the gall to go the Capitol and protest the thing they were actually pissed about. It made all the shitstains blocking freeways and looting stores last summer look like the thugs and looters that they really are. No fucking way you can let the truth be told. You lie about it every single chance you get.
You morons may end up with the civil war you want, but you are not going to like the result.
You mean several dozen ‘right wingers’ went and did something stupid. Not all of the, right wing. And what about all the far leftist violence? In the northwest alone, there were attempts to burn down a federal building in Portland with people still inside, and blow up an ICE facility in western Washington state.
Those things got almost no coverage from the media, outside of conservative outlets. So the reality is that the January 6th disruption in DC was only a big deal because of leftist propaganda.
turd lies; it’s what turd does. If turd posts statistics, they are guaranteed to be outright lies or cherry-picked to favor the Ds.

Rand Paul just accused Dr. Fauci--to his face--of committing a felony by lying to Congress, specifically in regards to Dr. Fauci claiming that the NIH didn't fund gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Hilarity ensued. See it for yourself here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB2wVer3E1s
Rand Paul 2024!
In that video, Rand Paul is saying that the NIH funding research to make novel viruses transmissible to humans means it's gaining the function to infect humans.
While that makes sense from a layman's perspective, that isn't the actual definition, and I think Fauci is technically correct to dispute that definition. Gain of function is genetically manipulating the virus. The part that the NIH funded was taking a class of novel viruses (that had previously been genetically manipulated) and finding the ones that were transmissible to humans by way of humanized mice.
Where Fauci is wrong and Rand Paul is right is that the American people don't and shouldn't give a shit about the technical definition of "gain of function". No one should understand why the NIH was funding research at a Chinese lab (with ties to the Chinese military) that took novel viruses and made them transmissible to humans--when the lab had a terrible safety record.
What difference does it make whether the NIH was funding the actual genetic tinkering or funding making gain of function viruses transmissible to humans?
In other words, I think Fauci is correct to make the distinction between "gain of function" (which is creating a novel virus) and making a novel virus transmissible to humans, but Rand Paul is correct to point out that this distinction doesn't matter one bit.
Fauci is relying on that technical distinction to be able to answer "honestly." He knows exectly what Paul is asking him, and he's splitting hairs with it. Yes, it's technically correct and honest that the NIH didn't fund gain of function specifically. So therefore, he didn't lie. It's his "meaning of 'is' " moment.
Maybe it's me, because I don't watch a lot of TV or pay much attention to the MSM, but Fauci seems to have been conspicuously absent and quiet for a while. He'll never be held legally to account for what he did, but I think pushing him into irrelevance is a better punishment than any criminal sanctions. Wreck his credibility and make him too toxic to put on camera. It will kill him, like it's killing Hillary. People like that can't stand not being revered.
"...Yes, it’s technically correct and honest that the NIH didn’t fund gain of function specifically..."
Like turd, he's depending on low intelligence; those who somehow believe money is not fungible.
I don't understand why he's still in charge of anything except for his status as a specifically progressive bureaucrat.
If they got rid of him now, it might look like the pro-Trump rabble were right and Fauci was wrong--and we can't have that! So, we'll keep a guy in charge of funding for the NIAID in spite of the fact that their incompetence may have started the pandemic under his leadership.
He couldn't survive a massive failure of a record like his in a private company.
Too big to fail.
He is the emperor's new clothes.
Fauci is still in charge because, while he is not much of a scientist or doctor, he is an excellent politician and manipulator.
He managed to prosper despite screwing up the AIDS response decades ago; COVID is nothing in comparison.
They hitched their wagon to him, and now they're stuck with him. I think they were hoping that once they started letting up on the covid restriction nonsense, they could quietly pull him back from the public eye, and try to avoid the enormous shit splatter that's happening right now. But Paul's not going to let it die quietly. He hammers Fauci on this point every time he gets in front of him. Someone is going to have to burn for the NIH funding, but it ain't gonna be Fauci. Fauci would bring a whole lot of people down with him, I'm sure. They'll pin the funding issue on some mid-level, expendable bureaucrat. But in the end, I think Fauci is cooked. He's not going to recover from this.
It'll get worse after November of 2022 if the Republicans take the House or the Senate or both.
They'll be all over Hunter Biden, too.
No, Fauci is not technically correct, he is simply lying. Making animal viruses transmissible to humans is clearly gain-of-function research and doesn't matter how it is done. Selection in humanized cell lines is just as much gain-of-function research as genetic manipulation.
Fauci then tried to muddy the waters by saying that this particular paper didn't produce SARS-CoV-2. But at this point, we're simply establishing that he was lying and that US-funded gain of function research was happening at Wuhan. The next step is to determine whether SARS-CoV-2 was the result of that.
Either way, Fauci should be held responsible for lying to Congress.
The “sexual relations” defense.
Total hilarity. Fauci had to resort to the 'nuh uh, YOU'RE the liar" defense.
The part where Fauci starts screaming at Rand Paul, "You don't know what you're talking about!" was elitist derp as far as the average American is concerned.
He's supposed to be a well respected bureaucrat. Instead, he looked like he was throwing food in a food fight. Rand Paul kept pretty reserved and on point.
It was not a good day for Fauci.
Boy, you really have a hate thing for Fauci.
Any decent person should have a hate thing for Fauci. The man is incompetent, vain, and egotistical, and has been that way for decades.
1. The man funded gain-of-function in Coronaviruses for the purpose of infecting humans, in Wuhan.
2. The man knew he had funded gain-of-function in Coronaviruses for the purpose of infecting humans, in Wuhan.
3. The man lied about there being efforts to create gain-of-function in Coronaviruses for the purpose of infecting humans, in Wuhan.
4. The man is now trying to lawyer the definition of gain-of-function in Coronaviruses to not include the purpose of infecting humans.
This man is Mussolini tier scum. Quit trying to white knight for him.
"Boy, you really have a hate thing for Fauci."
Boy, you are a knee-walking, boot-licking, slimy piece of lefty shit.
Because Fauci is a deceitful, weasely bureaucrat. Everyone should hate him.
That lying Rand Paul. What lie? Never explained but he must be lying about St. Fauci. Ignore those facts. Totally disgusting, like a rat caught in his own trap. Fauci "I never killed anyone." Road to hell is truly paved with his intentions.
A trillion here, a trillion there, and soon you're talking about real money.
Wait the government has to pay for things? Does congress know that?
What a racist idea!
Republicans should walk away from this and let Democrats own it.

"We should say why don’t you want our schools to teach anti-racism? Why don’t Republicans want their kids to know the tradition of anti-racism in the United States?" she said, growing increasingly frustrated. "Why are they attacking the core roots of history in this country that strays anything beyond what we already know? … Why don’t Republicans want us to learn how to not be racist? Why don’t Republicans want kids to know how to not be racist?"
"Critical Race Theory is not taught in elementary school. It is barely taught in law schools, frankly, in the level that it should be taught," Ocasio-Cortez claimed after liberal host Don Lemon said he thought bans on teaching CRT were being pushed by Republicans to "win back" White suburban voters by scaring them.
All the predictable and many times disproven arguments on display. Its no surprise that the lefties here are reading from the same talking points as AOC, Don Lemon, Joy Reid.
You have to push back on this stuff, esp if you have a kid in school. Dont allow them to gaslight you, they are lying through their teeth. Dont allow them their 1984-esque trap of framing it as "anti-racist" when it is only being banned because they are the ones violating the civil rights act.
They are anti-racist in the same way the "anti-fascists" roaming the streets in mobs, with bats, dressed in black, attacking anyone who disagrees with them, are definitely the ones against fascism.
Strange! How are they gonna do it if they don't know where the fund is going to come. Probably tax people more, collect money from them and then spend it back on infra and praise themselves for it, isn't it how it works?
It will be paid for with money printing and inflation, robbing your paycheck, your savings, your retirement account and your kids piggy bank. It will hurt the poor and those on a fixed income the most.
You can thank Biden, the Democrats and the gutless Republicans that always give in to the Democrats.
"Using tariffs to curb global carbon emissions, as Senate Democrats have proposed doing as part of a $3.5 trillion budget plan, is 'a political gimmick, not a real response to climate change', writes The Washington Post's Megan McArdle."
___
She's quite correct. ...
Whether it is unprecedented heat waves/'domes' and Westcoast wildfires, an exodus of sea life due to warming waters, Europe’s wettest/hottest year on record, off-the-chart poor-air advisories, unprecedented stalling hurricanes, the mass deforestation and incineration of the Amazonian rainforest, record-breaking floods, single-use plastics clogging life-bearing waters, a B.C. (2019) midsummer’s snowfall, the gradually dying endangered whale species or geologically invasive/destructive fracking or a myriad of other categories of large-scale toxic pollutant emissions and dumps — there has been discouragingly insufficient political courage and will (a.k.a. ‘gonad and fortitude’) to properly act upon the cause-and-effect of manmade global warming and climate change. Yet, stupid-sounding catchphrases are frequently uttered, like “It’s the economy, stupid!” (Seriously, what exactly is that line supposed to mean?)
‘Liberals’ and ‘conservatives’ are overly preoccupied with vociferously criticizing one another for their politics and beliefs thus diverting attention away from the planet's greatest polluters, where it should and needs to be sharply focused. Clearly there has been discouragingly insufficient political courage and will to properly act upon the cause-and-effect of manmade global warming and climate change. To me, general human existence has for too long been analogous to a cafeteria lineup consisting of diversely societally represented people, all adamantly arguing over which identifiable person should be at the front and, conversely, at the back of the line. Many of them further fight over to whom amongst them should go the last piece of quality pie and how much they should have to pay for it — all the while the interstellar spaceship on which they’re all permanently confined, owned and operated by (besides the wealthiest passengers) the fossil fuel industry, is on fire and toxifying at locations not normally investigated. And/or those locations are occupied thus claimed and controlled by one narrow-mindedly possessive party.
But there's still some hope for spaceship Earth and therefor humankind due to environmentally conscious and active young people, especially those who are approaching/reaching voting age. In contrast, the dinosaur electorate who have been voting into high office consecutive mass-pollution promoting or complicit/complacent governments for decades are gradually dying off and making way for voters who fully support a healthy Earth thus populace.
Doesn't the government always write checks it cant cash? I live in a liberal city and its great listening to all the fucktards here praising the Biden administration for creating an infrastructure bill, child tax credits, etc. and having the top 1% pay for it. The same fucktards dont understand that they are passing the budgets to write the checks but not passing the budgets to collect the money. This will come back to the middle class and make the politicians in DC look like asshats.
And the funniest part of it all; That 'collected' (i.e. Stolen by Gov-Gun Threat) money will go right into the hands of the top 1% who coincidentally gets those 'infrastructure' grants.
Crony Socialism strikes AGAIN!
