Brickbat: Tough Lesson

A Fremont, Colorado, school bus driver has been charged with harassment, assault causing injury and child abuse after slapping a 10-year-old student on his bus for having her mask down beneath her nose. Video shows the driver pull the girl's mask up and appear to argue with her before slapping her. The driver was suspended, and the school began the process to fire him. The termination letter the school system sent to the driver said this was the second time he touched a student in anger. The first time was in August 2020 and was also because of a dispute over a mask. The driver resigned before he could be fired.

Sort of the opposite of what one father told me during my (one!) year of teaching middle school: "If he gets out of line, you do just like I do and wack him a good one. And you let me know, so's I can clobber him when he gets home too!"

My dad would have kicked his ass. It was never acceptable to slap a child if one wasn't the parent. Corporal punishment via the "board of education" was acceptable, but slapping was not. My dad would have kicked his ass. There is a reason I am certain of this.

The girl tried multiple times to get off the bus and he refused. He didn’t call his dispatcher, either, to report the girl wanting to leave.

From the video, it appears the bus had an adult assistant. Not sure why that person was not arrested for not calling police.
