U.S. Troops Were Supposed To Leave Afghanistan on May 1. Biden Will Keep Them There Until September.
After nearly 20 years, America's longest war could soon be over. But delaying withdrawal for what seems like symbolic reasons is questionable.

President Joe Biden will force some 3,000 American troops to spend an additional four months risking their lives in Afghanistan seemingly in the name of symbolism.
The White House now plans to withdraw the last American troops from Afghanistan on September 11 of this year, The New York Times and other outlets reported Tuesday, rather than holding to the May 1 deadline established by the Trump administration last year. That May 1 deadline was the result of peace negotiations with the Taliban, and the Times noted that the new plan risks "an increase in violence—which the Taliban have threatened if the United States kept troops beyond May 1."
Ah, but a little more violence is nothing compared to the allure of a symbolic withdrawal on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that drew America into its longest-ever war in the first place, right?
Absent from the White House's explanation for the change in plans—delivered to the media via unnamed officials, naturally—is any discussion of what will be accomplished by keeping American troops on the ground in Afghanistan for an extra 134 days after May 1. What critical national security goals has the military been unable to achieve in the past 19-and-a-half years that will suddenly be within reach this summer? There are ongoing worries that the barely functional government in Kabul will collapse as soon as the American military is gone, but is there any reason to believe that that is any less likely to happen in September than it is in May? If so, White House and Pentagon officials should articulate those reasons.
If not, this looks like a foolish strategic decision that invites conflict. After all, what would American military officials say and do if the Taliban suddenly reneged on its side of the Doha Agreement for a purely figurative goal.
About the only good thing to be said about Tuesday's announcement is that it does contain a certain end date for the withdrawal of American troops. Maintaining a commitment to ending the war and bringing the troops home should be of the utmost importance.
Unfortunately, the delay is already creating openings for advocates of neverending war. John Bolton, the former George W. Bush and Donald Trump advisor and physical embodiment of the reckless interventionism that has defined the past two decades of U.S. foreign policy, responded to Tuesday's announcement by tweeting that "a full unconditional retreat of U.S. forces from Afghanistan is reckless." Leaving Afghanistan means "the Afghan government will likely fall, & terrorists will enjoy a resurgence threatening America," Bolton wrote.
A four-month delay in withdrawing U.S. forces means four more months for the Biden administration to be swayed into staying even longer.
"Biden should provide the Taliban and critics at home who could try to be spoilers with clear signal that we are definitely on the way out—and that no new conditions are being applied," wrote Will Ruger, the vice president for policy at the Charles Koch Institute who had been nominated by Trump to be the next ambassador to Afghanistan (Ruger was never confirmed and his nomination was returned by the Senate in January). "It would be an unnecessary shame for even one more American to die in this conflict."
More than 2,300 Americans have died in Afghanistan since the war began, and the Biden administration seems willing to add a few more lives to that grim tally just so we can all enjoy the poetic symmetry of historical occasions. I'm sure that will bring comfort to the families and friends of any American soldiers that might be killed in June, July, or August.

Not gonna happen.
Fucking GOP and Trump those war monger...
Wait what?
Gives 'em time to drum up some other excuse to stick around.
We're not leaving until Joe remembers what reason No. 3 was.
Number 4 will surprise you!
Number 4 will surprise *him*!
Senator Biden is waiting for President Harris to weigh in.
The Spice must flow!
"Ah, but a little more violence is nothing compared to the allure of a symbolic withdrawal on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that drew America into its longest-ever war in the first place, right?"
After the relations revealed by the Pentagon Papers, this isn't really surprising. Hey, who cares if a couple thousand Americans have to risk their lives for a few more months, if Biden thinks it will make him look better?
Every US casualty after May first is on Basement Bunker Biden.
The only reason he isn't honoring the agreement is because Trump created it.
Wrong. Every casualty since 2008 are on Obama and Biden.
No, this is standard Wilsonian interventionism.
Why didn't the Dotard pull out when he had a chance?
(not talking about Stormy Daniels)
Why don't you fuck off and die?
Because of you guys, Nuttplug; House Democrats, Working With Liz Cheney, Restrict Trump’s Planned Withdrawal of Troops From Afghanistan and Germany
God knows he tried.
Do you pull out, or do you ejaculate in the children you rape?
What an ignorant statement.
Trump negotiated a May 1 withdraw. Now some people want to pretend that didn't happen.
Zzz...

Remember how the media acted like Trump was an insane demagogue for firing Bolton, and how they (including Reason) crowed with glee when Bolton slagged him in his book.
Remember how Reason largely ignored Trump's peace deal with the Taliban, and pretended the withdrawal delays put in place by Liz Cheney and the Democrats were Trump's fault?
Fuck you Reason. You sold your souls to idiots.
John Bolton should be pushed into an open elevator shaft with Bibi Nuttybombyou handcuffed to him.
Bolton is a psychopath and even worse a zionist psychopath and there's nothing worse than zionism.
Nazi make funny!
"...Bibi Nuttybombyou..."
Yeah, but...we'd be losing a magnificent mustache.
I remember!
Next youre going to tell me trump helped negotiate peace agreements between Israel and Middle Eastern countries. Probably claiming he called it something stupid like the Abraham Accords.
"You sold your souls to idiots."
Not like they were using them...
Losers. I sold MY soul for rock and roll.

If not for a compliant media, this would be difficult for the Biden administration to justify or explain. One wonders what would have been the reaction if President Obama has set a 5/1 date and president Trump had arbitrarily extended it until 9/11.
"One wonders what would have been the reaction if President Obama has set a 5/1 date and president Trump had arbitrarily extended it until 9/11."
Another excuse for burning downtown businesses?
Impeachment.
Biden administration moved the goal post of what has to happen before we leave and that goal post is to high for anyone to meet. We apparently haven't even meet them in this country so we are never leaving.
please title your next piece "(D) Doesn't End Wars" so we know you understand at least one thing
Obama and Biden's main campaign promise in 2008 and again in 2012 was that they were ending the wars and closing GITMO. 13 years later, not much has changed. Biden is spending our tax dollars on unwanted projects over there. Those Generals that supported Biden only did so because they have interests there. Not now, but when they get out. If they end the wars the Generals can't get the million dollar jobs that they will create in the private sector. If they can't sell more equipment to our government, they will have to find a real job. Clearly, we have too many of these greedy "Perfumed Princes" running around. They lost two wars, why the hell would they make millions during retirements on wars. They should be strung up around the beltway for their failures and the Americans that they have gotten killed. Instead, they are making millions.
They should be strung up around the beltway for their failures and the Americans that they have gotten killed.
Preach it!
It's all about the money for these evil bastards.
I knew it was coming, and it is still somehow disappointing.
Afg is just a live fire, moving target range to demo all the new $$$ tech on. And apparently it is too lucrative to abandon.
And Eisenhower was the most prescient president (say that 10 times fast) of the 20th century.
The last time I was there, I ran into an old buddy. His unit was in Iraq for 10 months or so and was redeployed straight to Afghanistan for 6 months. What mission was important enough to extend them? Destruction of tools. They were taking entire shipments of brand new, expensive, high end tools and cutting them up so that they wouldn't have to incur the additional costs of shipping them back to the US.
What kind of tools have such strategic importance?
Can't let this non-metric case wrench set fall into the wrong hands?
Yes. Typical government brilliance. They could have just gifted them to the troops for a consolation prize.
Well not only could that wrench take a bolt off, it could be used to put one on. Can't have that kind of dual purpose weapon in the hands of the enemy.
"13 years later, not much has changed."
What a surprise. Democrats, the gurus of Social Justice, have been promising to fix cities like Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Minneapolis, and D.C. since the riots of 1968, and nothing has changed.
They lost two wars
The Bushpigs lost Iraq before Obama was sworn in.
He was talking about the generals you pig ignorant fuck.
The generals didn't lose Iraq, you Bush apologist idiot. The Bushpigs lost it before it started by making the objective impossible.
13 years and you still can’t help but call anyone that points out your stupidity a Bush apologist. As if I’ve ever in all that time defended going into Iraq (or defended the IC that lied us into it).
Hahahahaha, never change shriek.
I would like it if he changed enough to stop raping children and kill himself.
Golly, I never ran into one of these Bushpigs during my four trips over there. Can you name a location? I did see dozens of "Perfumed Princes" wearing stars in the massive buffet at the Green Zone when I visited there to shower after 4 months of fighting.
There was no objective. There was no plan. The Generals tried to "wing it" because they were overconfident, inexperienced REMF shits that have no clue as to how to handle a counter-insurgency. IEDs are not new, they were used in every war since modern explosives were invented.
US Generals and Command Sergeant Majors are like chickens. They have no memory. Every time the bastards blink, the world is new. They bombed Saddam's airfield bunkers so the media could show the folks back home big, impressive explosions. The result? Hundreds of acres of bunkers blown up with usable but "sensitized" munitions scattered around them. They never secured those massive fields of scattered explosives so, in effect, they supplied the insurgents with years of explosives to use in IEDs. They sent us into an urban war in canvas covered death traps against an enemy that had IED material to hit us with for years.
BTW, I was told that I had better get over there quick because if I didn't, I would miss it. In and out. That was the plan. Nobody followed that plan. Why? Because the Generals were getting out and working for companies that were selling war materials. They are all rich at the expense of thousands of dead and maimed kids that were sent home to a VA run by Bernie the Socialist. The end.
The storage and retention period on the old 'Mission Accomplished' banner was a decade and it will take 134 days to print the new one.
Financial planner: You haven't set aside anything for the future.
Wiggum: Well, you know how it is with
copsgrunts. I'll get shot three days beforeretirementpulling out of Afghanistan. In the business, we call it "retirony".Planner: Well, what if you don't get shot?
Wiggum: What a terrible thing to say! Now look, you made my wife cry!
Color me surprised. Didn't Biden question the peace deal and excoriate Trump for it and now we are surprised Biden has extended the deadline? Are we going to be surprised when increased violence this summer is used as evidence to extend the deadline even more? When do we all realize that Ken was right in his pronunciations as to what Biden would do as President?
When do we all realize that Ken was right in his pronunciations as to what Biden would do as President?
When are you Shultzistas going to stop shitting up Reason's legitimate and honestly-motivated criticisms of Biden?
Uhm 6 months ago when the criticism actually kind of mattered
^ Many of us pointed out what would happen before the election if Biden won and we were called cultists and Trump cock suckers. And the joke that was Jo Jorgensen aside, this publication clearly preferred Biden over Trump. After the election, many of us said we would enjoy throwing out what a folly that was in Reason’s face whenever stories like this came up for the next four years. So here we are. Ignore it or deal with it, but it’s going to continue.
When the economy is thumping along at 7% GDP growth this year no one will care about a five month delay on troop withdrawal in a shithole country.
It’s amazing the growth you can have when you shotgun the economy in the face and then drag its half-dead corpse behind your tractor for good measure.
How the fuck are we getting 7% growth with lockdowns and higher taxes?
It's called "makin shit up", and because Nuttplug isn't very knowledgeable it's the best he can do.
Except the troops and their families... Yeah no one will care.
When reason admits their bias. Adits they were wrong. Reason helped push the whole biden as a moderate angle.
He is a moderate - except to Trump cultists.
Remember, Trump proved huge deficits don't matter.
Turd posts the same lie that's been jammed in his face many times; Ken figures (and I agree) that turd's mental capabilities are such that he is simply not able to separate his lies from reality.
Yes, he's dishonest; it's because he's abysmally stupid.
You mean Pelosi's deficits? The ones she ran through that were vetoproof?
You're trying to blame them on Trump, even though he sent some of the non-vetoproof ones back?
You might be that dumb but the rest of us aren't.
Your child raping ass belongs in a landfill with your fellow pedophile marxists
I larfed.
Congratulations, Reason! You got exactly what you wanted!
By the way, how much more difficult will this make any future peace agreements to achieve?
It’s going to be one very bloody summer in Afghanistan.
Watch, Trump will get the blame because he negotiated the May 1 withdraw.
No matter who is President the US war machine rolls on. Where's Sevo? He can tell you all about it.
Asshole commie kid seems confused. Or stupid. Or both, more likely.
Not stupid enough to go fight Ho Chi Minh-- probably the 20th century's greatest anti-imperialist.
Asshole commie kid seems confused. Or stupid. Or lying. Or all three, more likely.
Oh,
Em,
Gee!
Missed this pile of lefty shit:
"...Ho Chi Minh– probably the 20th century’s greatest anti-imperialist."
"the 20th century’s greatest anti-imperialist"
This is bait.
Hey cunt, you pay your mortgage yet?
“But delaying withdrawal for what seems like symbolic reasons is questionable.”
Biden is delaying the withdrawal because he doesn’t want to be seen using Trump’s timeline. That’s the only reason.
Too bad Biden's old man delayed withdrawal.
From Vox:
"Few experts or US officials I spoke to believe Biden will adhere to the timeline laid out in the Trump-Taliban peace deal — either because Biden wants to seek a more lasting diplomatic solution to the war in Afghanistan or because his team fears an intensified civil war on the heels of a US withdrawal would make the administration look bad."
[The minute the last troops leave the whole place falls apart]
"They argue that withdrawing by May is simply too soon, but that staying indefinitely is also politically and militarily infeasible. Delaying America’s full withdrawal for a few months or even years, then, allows the peace process to play out and for an unhurried US exit from Afghanistan."
[Even "years!" So negotiate a "deal" with the Taliban to go beyond 5/1]
"With such a deal in place, the US and its NATO allies could extricate themselves from Afghanistan without fear their absence would lead to more bloodshed."
But....
"... it’s unclear whether the Taliban would even agree to an extension. Their messaging for America to date, Stanford’s Mir said, is “leave by May 1 or we fight you.” Biden therefore risks adding to the 2,400 dead Americans in Afghanistan if the US overstays its welcome."
In essence, I think, BidenHarris is trying to make their own mark on the withdrawal, in order to discredit what Trump set up, Nothing will be gained, it just postpones the inevitable [Taliban take over] but disaster looms,
"Biden therefore risks adding to the 2,400 dead Americans in Afghanistan if the US overstays its welcome."
What a great excuse for Biden to tear up the agreement and send in more troops.
There's no way the establishment is going to give up prime real estate smack dab between Russia, India and China.
Why bring up Mongolia?
Why don't you fuck off and die?
Smack dab between Russia, India and China.
Buttplug - "Hurr, durr, Mongolia?"
Couldn't you have looked at a fucking map before you decided to be stupid?
If I ever create a retard school I'll hire White Knight to teach chemistry, sarcasmic to teach English, and you to teach geography.
Buttplug can teach sex ed. The hard way.
Afghanistan is the graveyard of armies.
"Never underestimate Joe's ability to really fuck things up" - Barrack Hussein Obama
"U.S. Troops Were Supposed To Leave Afghanistan on May 1. Biden Will Keep Them There"
Enough.
This might be fantastic news, and if the Biden administration follows through with this, I'll be happy to be wrong about them on the issue of Afghanistan.
There are a number of outstanding questions:
1) Will the Taliban accept this breach of the Trump peace deal without attacking American troops come May 1st?
The Taliban has not targeted a single American since the day President Trump signed the peace deal, 14 months ago. If Biden breaches the full withdrawal date in the agreement Trump signed, will the Taliban continue to avoid targeting Americans and American troops? From the Taliban's perspective, attacking Americans might do more to encourage the Biden administration to follow through on its promises. After all, the Taliban appears to have kept all their promises in Trump's deal--why doesn't the United States do the same?
Generally speaking, hostile parties don't like to be strung along and retraded on the terms of a contenious agreement that way.
2) Will Biden follow through on his promise to completely withdraw from Afghanistan if and when the the Taliban a) continues its attacks on the U.S. backed government in Kabul and/or b) continues to be fundamentalist Islamic sharia who specifically do not believe that women and men are equal before the only law that matters to them?
The Biden administration has repeatedly asserted that the Trump agreement is insufficient because it doesn't guarantee the rights of women. Has that changed? Just a few days ago, Biden's Secretary of State submitted an eight page list of demands to the Taliban--with the insistence that the Taliban guarantees the rights of women before the United States withdraws among them.
3) Will the Biden administration follow through on leaving Afghanistan if and when the Taliban refuses to share power with U.S. backed government in Kabul--and threatens to slash their throats instead?
If it were not for the United States, our allies, and our troops, the U.S. backed government in Kabul would probably be overrun and slaughtered by the Taliban, and from the Taliban's perspective, there may not be a good strategic reason for them to share power with the U.S. backed government in Kabul when they could take all the power for themselves. Why share if you don't have to?
Conclusion: There is more to the Biden administration breaching Trump's peace deal with the Taliban than the Biden administration simply announcing that the terms have changed--whether the Taliban likes it or not.
The press may imagine that reality shifts to support whatever Biden and the Democrats say at the time, but reality has a way of asserting itself no matter what the Biden administration and the press say about it. The reality is that leaving Afghanistan is in the best interests of the United States and our security--regardless of how the Taliban treats women and regardless of how the Taliban treats the U.S. backed government in Kabul--and anyone who imagines that the Biden administration genuinely understands that, but wants another five months--for no apparent reason--is in serious danger of being painfully gullible.
What will be true about the desirability of leaving five months from now that isn't already true today? If your narrative about this doesn't account for that question, then you probably haven't accounted for the Biden administration's demands before leaving.
Afghanistan is a side show. Iran is the headliner.
Conclusion: There is more to the Biden administration breaching Trump’s peace deal with the Taliban than the Biden administration simply announcing that the terms have changed–whether the Taliban likes it or not.
Ok, I'll bite. Why is POTUS Biden making this policy choice?
I think it's because he wants to assert the rights of women in the Afghan constitution, demand representation for the U.S. backed government in Kabul, etc., etc.
They're absurd fantasies that ignore the reality on the ground, and they're the same unachievable goals that the Bush and Obama administrations used to justify eternal occupation, too.
Meanwhile, the press, here in the United States, treats this bullshit seriously. Biden wanted to leave, but the Taliban just wouldn't guarantee the rights of women--so what could he do?
In reality, the real reasons why it's in the best interests of the United States to leave will be the same in September as they are now. I hope I'm wrong and Biden really does intend to leave by September, and this delay is for good reasons, but I can't think of any of those good reasons.
“1) Will the Taliban accept this breach of the Trump peace deal without attacking American troops come May 1st?”
No. And when they resume attacking Americans it will be the reason we can’t leave on 9/11 either. Full stop.
"The reality is that leaving Afghanistan is in the best interests of the United States"
Ken, this always makes me laugh. You're constantly boasting of your status as a non elite average American while blathering on about the best interests of the US.
"...You’re constantly boasting of your status as a non elite average American while blathering on about the best interests of the US."
This troll is unfamiliar with "false dichotomy".
Sorry Sevo. You never make me laugh. You're a bore.
You’re a facile idiot.
Knock knock.
Troll's here.
Fuck off, lefty asshole.
What part of that quote was wrong?
How about everything? The reality is that those who make the decisions, those elite, above average Americans, have decided that it's in the best interests of the US to stay a while longer in Afghanistan.
Just like Viet Nam, another country and war we had NO business dealing in, Afghanistan was another sucker punch to all those forced into it. Iraq was another and a war with Iran will be the death blow to Isrealhell.
Another useless war based entirely on one lie after another, spread with the help of the chew owned MSM.
I feel sorry for all those men and women who stupidly enlisted into the military only to be used for the profit of someone else.
Just remember what Henry Kissmyassinger said about soldiers.
Just to add a little perspective here:
"US Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave both the Taliban and the Afghan government an eight-page proposed peace plan, which they were to discuss and revise before coming to Turkey to cobble together an agreement.
Blinken’s peace plan called for the protection of the rights of women and minorities and allowed for constitutional reform. It also called for the establishment of an interim administration.
The plan also included the setting up of an Islamic Advisory Council which would advise on all laws to ensure they are kept within Islamic tenets, an apparent concession to the Taliban.
But Afghan President Ashraf Ghani offered an alternative to Blinken’s proposal, in which he would head an interim government until elections could be held within months.
The Taliban have made it clear they would not accept a government headed by Ghani, but they have yet to offer an alternative to Binken’s proposal."
----Al Jazeera, April 13, 2021
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/taliban-refuse-to-attend-afghan-talks-in-turkey-if-held-this-week/ar-BB1fAYVj
This is a story about how the Taliban are refusing to attend peace talks in Turkey next week. The reason the Taliban has refused to negotiate with the United States is probably because they already have an agreement with the United States, and the United States is committed to leaving before May 1st. Why would they renegotiate?
The Taliban has already released all the POWs they were holding. They've already held back all attacks on the USA. They abided by the terms of the deal. The deal is done being negotiated, and if the Biden administration is breaching the deal, that's on them. That doesn't mean the terms of the deal have changed! That just means the Biden administration is breaching them.
Why would they offer an alternative to Binken's proposal?!
The deal is done. It was done 14 months ago. We leave on May 1st or we breach the deal. End of story. IF IF IF the Taliban doesn't take this lying down, they may go back to a state of war with the United States.
" IF IF IF the Taliban doesn’t take this lying down, they may go back to a state of war with the United States."
You know something is rotten in DC when we have to hope the Taliban is the more reasonable entity.
The Taliban (rather than Al Qaeda) do seem to be more or less honest about what they're doing and why. I don't know if it's because of the Pashtun honor code or whether it's because you don't inspire a lot of people to martyr themselves for your cause by being a bald-faced liar. Maybe it's something else.
It's sort of like Norm MacDonald's observation about Bill Coby being a hypocrite, though. Being a hypocrite is probably a good quality for a rapist. Most rapists are and should be hypocrites. If the Taliban didn't really act out the shit they believe, wouldn't that be better? Unfortunately, they seem to really mean it. Fuckin' bastards do more or less keep their word though.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2rcquwo4R0
"Fuckin’ bastards do more or less keep their word though. "
Trouble is you don't know what their word is, do you, aside from what you read in the fake news NYT, or its lying cousins. Fact is these sorts of agreements could well have what they call secret protocols which the signers take pains to keep from Ken Shultz and his ilk.
"you don’t inspire a lot of people to martyr themselves for your cause by being a bald-faced liar".
Ken, They don't "inspire" Martyrs. They don't need to. Muslim families have as many sons as they can. It is the sole purpose of any wife. They need at least four because the fourth is to be named named Mohammed. Remember, the majority of these sons are the product of an incestuous relationship. They match couples within their own family, they have been doing this for centuries. This practice produces many mentally retarded or mentally disabled children. If you have raided enough of their homes, it becomes obvious.
So, what do they do with these mentally disabled sons? They herd goats and sheep. The #1 son is going to inherit everything. He will be the first to be married. The other sons are there to work and provide. If the family has the means, they will be married someday too.
As for the mentally retarded sheepherder, he will never have a wife, only sheep and goats.
The Imam stops by and takes interest in the mentally disabled sheepherder. Maybe the parents invite them. He has the sheepherder swing by the mosque for "special Islamic training". It starts with the tale of 72 virgins. Of course, the sheepherder is interested, he has never had female prospects, he never will have them. The Imam promises him that in heaven, he will have 72 virgins to do with what he chooses. The Imam breaks out the porn, which the boy has never seen in his entire life. Can you imagine what is going through his simple mind? If he isn't convinced that being a Martyr is his path, the Imam breaks out a little heroin to help the poor kid understand what it will feel like when he is in heaven.
Then, they teach him how to drive.
Then, they point to the front gate of the base and tell him that the 72 virgins are waiting for him in the beyond. They always have a "det switch" in case the sheepherder screws up or loses his nerve. If you shoot the sheepherder and stop him, they will wait until somebody approaches the vehicle before they blow it.
BOOM.
There were at least 7 car bombs a day every morning in Baghdad for a long time. They will never run out of mentally disabled sheepherders or the pedophile Imams that send them to die.
There is nothing there to win in a war. There is only sorrow in the Middle East.
"There were at least 7 car bombs a day every morning in Baghdad for a long time. "
Did they drive all the way from Afghanistan? It sounds like they've got more gumption than you're willing to credit them.
You got me. I was just speaking to the creation of martyrs.
They would have more car bombs, but they don't have suitable roads, running cars, or real buildings to drive them into. Just scooters and assholes.
"Just scooters and assholes."
War is hell.
Only if you are actually fighting it. Only about 2% of us left the base and killed the enemy. Everybody else spent their time on big bases and played "hide the sausage" with Pete "combat" Buttigiggler.
Any more than 2% might interfere with the flow of smack into Iran.
Yes. There were parking lots full of armored IED resistant vehicles available after 2010. But under Obama and Slow Joe, they never left the parking lots. They sure look expensive.
To illustrate Talcum's point, take a look at the following global map from a Canadian genetics education group: https://geneticseducation.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Consang2015.png
From 2015, but it notes the percentage of consanguineous unions globally. Unions between people closer than second cousins to each other. Note the insane prevalence in MENA and Central Asia.
There's a whole epidemic of 'tarded kids in France because of the Muslims having kids with their relatives.
Russia too. Which is hilarious, thinking of the Russia Stronk! types on the American alt-right, who think that Putin is some great defender of Western culture and values.
Russia is likely going to be a Muslim-plurality nation in the next 20-30 years, assuming demographic trends hold (Slavic women going whole-hog on abortion-as-birth-control, Slavic family replacement at some ridiculous figure like 1.2 children per family, versus 4-5+ for the Muslim minorities and non-Slavic groups.) Should be interesting, someone like Kadyrov with the keys to this next generation of mobile ICBMs.
America has no business in other people's business.
The war on Iraq was illegal and immoral. Anyone who fought in that war is a war criminal.
America destroyed Iraq and Afghanistan. It plans to destroy Iran
all for greater Isrealhell.
" IF IF IF the Taliban doesn’t take this lying down, they may go back to a state of war with the United States."
The Taliban could well approve of the delay. It could be a strategic delay dressed up for Reason commenters and writers as a symbolic delay. Things have been heating up with Iran over the past few months and staying in place gives the US a second or third front from which to launch aggressive military operations against Iran or merely keep the threat in place which ties up Iranian military assets. The Taliban have not traditionally been on the best of terms with Iran, probably the fact that thanks to the war, Iran has been flooded with Afghan heroin, giving it the world's highest concentration of junkies. The Taliban might be quite happy to contribute to sticking one in the eye of Iran.
I just remembered the term used in the navy: Fleet in being.
"a fleet of naval vessels that because of its mere existence is a factor in the calculations of opposing strategists even though it is inactive or appears to be immobilized"
Substitute airforce for naval and that should give you the idea. The US is entering negotiations with Iran and they need to make any threats to Iran credible.
Seems redundant = The US is entering negotiations with Iran and they need to make any threats to Iran credible.
Meaning, the USAF has ample assets in the ME region to turn Iran into a parking lot, outside of Afganistan. I don't think this is a 'we don't think you're credible because you don't have enough military assets stationed in the region already' kind of thing.
" don’t think this is a ‘we don’t think you’re credible because you don’t have enough military assets stationed in the region already’ kind of thing."
Maybe so, but it could be. More assets are presumably more threatening the fewer assets. And Iranian air defenses will have to be further stretched to counter the possibility of an attack from Afghanistan. If the US leaves Afghanistan, Iran needn't fear air attacks from the Taliban which allah didn't bless with an airforce, and can concentrate those assets that would otherwise be engaged in countering a potential US attack from Afghanistan in areas where they will be more likely to be put to use.
I'm wondering too if Kabul might be safer from Iranian retaliation, too. Certainly safer than any of the US airforce facilities in Iraq which are almost routinely shelled and mortared by Iraq's huge population of highly experienced Shia militants.
"which are almost routinely shelled and mortared by Iraq’s huge population of highly experienced Shia militants"
"highly experienced"? Shelled?
They don't have artillery to "shell" with.
Experienced? They aren't even trained. They launch rockets by laying them on a sand berm and then light them off with home made fuzes. Actual hits are rare, Scary? Yes. Effective? No. There is no guidance system. They are wildly inaccurate. They are lucky if they can land the thing on the base, never mind hitting aircraft on the airfield.
They don't set up mortars and register them for accuracy and sheaf, they don't use aiming stakes, nor do they have a mortar sight. All required. They don't even have time to settle the base plate. They put the mortar together and estimate the elevation, they have no data, no ranging ability, nor do they even have a "leveling bubble" to get the mortar tube set to a specific elevation which means that the round may go 2000m or it may go 5000m. They then throw 7 to 11 rounds down the tube, and start breaking down the mortar before the first round lands and then scatter. To be accurate, mortars and arty are fired and then adjusted on to the target by a forward observer. Oftentimes, the mooks are in such a hurry, they launch the round without pulling the fuse safety pin out and the round doesn't detonate on impact.
If they linger, even for a minute or two, there will be a volley of counter battery. They will then be hit with highly accurate 120mm mortar fire, or 105, 155, or 8 inch arty which is aimed and directed by a radar system that plots their position and sends it to the gun teams. Also, the Kiowa helicopters were very good at getting on station quickly and engaging them if they weren't moving out quickly.
You never left the base, did ya?
No more Kiowas (sad face), and the latest drone and Iranian theater ballistic missile attacks were pretty damned accurate.
But yeah, neither Iraqi nor Afghan anti-government militia were especially known for their tradecraft in employing indirect fire. Made Raytheon a bucket load of cash though, selling various C-RAM systems to .mil.
Yes, sad face. We had a mortar team hit us from across the Tigris for two months. They lingered too long and the Kiowas caught them. They were the tool for the job in the city. Old school.
There are lots of examples of truck bomb attacks and rocket attacks on US facilities in Iraq, presumably at the hands of Shia militants. Enough to keep the soldiers there scared and on their toes if not taken away in body bags.
Yeah, lived it. There were at least 7 car bombs every morning in Baghdad in 2003, 2004, 2005. They would get them ready during curfew and set them loose at 7 am. They would also install the IEDs, piece by piece, over night. You could not move until about 11. By then, US Infantry walked all the major routes with EOD for clearance. The explosions would rock the city all morning. Thankfully, the US learned to use local nationals or hired contractors to man the outer rings at the gates.
Bush Sr knew not to enter Baghdad. Bush Jr didn't give a shit, he sure as hell wasn't running those roads.
"There were at least 7 car bombs every morning in Baghdad in 2003, 2004, 2005."
My impression was there was a lull in the attacks until a year or so ago with the recent escalation of tensions with Iran. Now they seem to be a regular thing again, with the last attack taking place as recently as last week, though you'd need to be a keen follower of the issue to be aware of it. If no one is killed, it seems as though it is ignored by the news media. Which might be part of the strategy: attacks bad enough to keep the troops nervous, but not bad enough to draw media attention.
It isn't an Iranian thing that often. It is a local thing. Some areas were even restive. If you are hitting the Mosques and kicking doors every night, the IEDs will always escalate. Due to IEDs hitting convoys and scared kids opening up, civilians were getting smoked. Iraqis are tribal. If you kill an innocent civilian, his/her tribe will seek revenge. There could be 7000 people in that tribe. Every man, woman, and child will facilitate getting those IEDs placed. Blood feud. It is what they do. It is how they live.
Even if you did make peace with the local Mayors, it would not last. Blackwater or a military convoy would roll through your area and shoot a bunch of civilians for getting to close. We were back to square one.
Top it off with the Air Force bombing weddings and shooting up our Iraqi allies with gunships, we were not well liked.
Iranians supplied enhanced IEDs with penetrators. But there were also, Afghans, Chechens, Turkmen, a buffet of Islamic fighers that came to kill us for being there. They came for Jihad because we invaded.
Meaning, the USAF has ample assets in the ME region to turn Iran into a parking lot, outside of Afganistan.
Only if they're properly loaded. And that's assuming they get in the air before Iran's missile batteries hammer the GCC bases.
Wasn't there some reason for the "longest war in U.S. history"? Oh yeah, didn't something happen on September 11, 2001, in Manhattan, in Washington D.C., in the sky over Pennsylvania? And the Taliban played a role in that? But sure, cut and run again America.
"And the Taliban played a role in that?"
Not that I'm aware of. Everyone else but the Taliban seemed to have their fingers in the 9/11 pie. Maybe that's why the Taliban were the patsies.
Everyone including Pissrael.
Oh, new Nazi!
It sounds like JFree unhinged.
well....there you go again.
If you think that will cause me to think other wise, you are sadly mistaken.
People like you have nothing to defend with except explitives and name calling.
Won't work. Israel is a zionist shitehole, always has been, always will be.
"Some people did something" - Congresswoman Ilhan Omar
The terrorists on the plane were from Saudi Arabia but hey, what is the difference, right?
"...But sure, cut and run again America."
Uh, you are proposing that staying longer will accomplish exactly what?
There were 19 hijackers on 9/11.
They were members of Al Qaeda. Fifteen of them were citizens of Saudi Arabia, two were from the United Arab Emirates, one was from Lebanon, and one from Egypt. None were Taliban members, and none were Afghans.
The Taliban refused to turn over Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, and on that basis the US invaded Afghanistan.
That excuse literally expired a decade ago. The tenth anniversary of Osama bin Laden's death, at American hands in Pakistan, will be May 2nd.
Until the American people wake up and know the truth about America's foreign policies in the middle east this shit will continue.
The real truth is because of Zionist Israel and its lobbying power in Washington, along with the blackmail program run by Jeffery Epstein that has blackmailed nearly ever congressman in Washington not to mention the news media, corporate and sports. This is why American troops are in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Isrealhell. Of course it's also a bonus to make all that extra cash with the opium crop and the heroin that is being smuggled out of Afghanistan on U.S. military trucks and Reaper Drones.
One has to wonder just how many of the little weasels inside the Pentagram are making big cash from it? How much of that cash is funneled back to Bibi?
How many retired Generals and other upper officer corps have fat bank accounts from the smack trade?
The ugly truth is this: America is Isrealhell's bitch and its military is nothing more than mercenaries for that nasty little zionist shit hole.
Until the American people wake up and know the truth it's military will continue to robots for Israel and America will continue to be israel's bitch.
You antisemites seriously crack me up. There is only one appropriate response: Am Chai Yisrael!!!.
Remember JohnZ...We Jews will live, and we will go on to live good, meaningful and rewarding lives. We have been around for millennia. You? You will die; unloved, contemptible and forgotten. No one will remember you. With luck, one of us might just piss on your grave in the distant future.
Listen, on second thought JohnZ, you just keep posting because I want people to read your lunacy and subject you to ridicule.
Yeah, his comments are his own best argument against his idiocy.
It's sad that so many people have been brainwashed by zionist propaganda.
Israel is NOT a jewish state. Never has been, never will be. Israel is a zionist state.
It is because of Israel that America is wasting its blood and treasury in the middle east.
The drug trade has traditionally bound secret services, criminal networks, the military and guerilla armies together at the hip. It's very plausible that something along those lines in Afghanistan since 2001. But it all takes place in secrecy so I can only speculate, The Epstein stuff too would be a called a honey trap, one of the oldest tricks in the book. Again it doesn't work unless it's done in secret so speculation is all we've got.
As for America being Israel's bitch, that may play well in Israel. Self aggrandizing Israeli politicians like to boast about their influence with America. It makes them appear more powerful and consequently more attractive to voters. Otherwise it sounds like the same kind of hysterical drivel found in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion or Mein Kampf.
"The drug trade has traditionally bound secret services, criminal networks, the military and guerilla armies together at the hip..."
Betting the troll has no cite for this 'wide-ranging' claim.
Still no laughs, Sevo. Try channeling your inner Ken Shultz.
Still no cites from you.
Still nothing intelligent, troll. Try fucking off an dying.
and
Secrecy? Have you been to Helmand where 2/3rds of the world's poppies are grown? Somehow, despite the massive base Leatherneck being there 20 years, the poppy fields are still grown in the open. US drones can spot a man in a field at night but somehow, they can't find poppy fields that are hectares in size. Weird, huh? The Taliban shut them down, then allowed them to start growing again when the US arrived as long as they get a cut. They are easy to spot and would be easy to eradicate from aerial spraying. It is painfully obvious that the US is involved.
Again, you never left the base, did you?
"the poppy fields are still grown in the open."
That's hardly surprising, isn't it? It's not like they are going to grow their poppies in caves. And yes, the drug trade is shrouded in secrecy. When was the last time you heard a major participant admitting his role?
It is ridiculous. If we could do just one good thing, Afghanistan would be easier to accept. Imagine if we eradicated all the poppies in Afghanistan? 2/3rds of the world's supply would be gone. How many lives would it save worldwide?
If you have reliable access to an unadulterated product, you don't die from heroin. It's the additives that fuck up your liver and kill you. Heroin is probably the most effective pain killer. It is a boon from nature. Aside from a few handicrafts like rugs and carpets, poppies are the only crop Afghans can be expected to grow. And you want to eradicate it.
A rug by the way looks the same when you flip it over. A carpet has a distinct difference.
Afghanistan could probably become a good source of saffron, the female parts (the long bits) of the crocus flower. At about $US 5000 per kilo, the delicately flavored red spice is probably the most expensive in the world.
They process in remote regions of Afghanistan or in Iran. I am near certain that they are not producing unadulterated product.
I imagine the heroin is fairly pure when it is produced. It tends to get adulterated every time it changes hands in the black market(s). These are general rules which I assume apply in Afghanistan.
How many lives would be saved? A negative number.
When the supplies of opium-derived opiates goes down, synthetic opiates (like fentanyl and carfentanyl) replace them. And the synthetics, being stronger, are far more prone to mis-dilution and thus accidental overdose.
I'm skeptical. Don't you think that if we eradicated 2/3rds of heroin it would be hard to bring in enough Fentanyl to replace it?
I don’t think China’d have any problem cranking out that much fentanyl. The shits even showing up in cocaine and synthetic pot. Its been about 6 years since I’d touch any street drugs with a 10 ft pole.
More to the point, I think destroying 2/3rds of the illegal opium supply (I think plenty is grown legally in India and the like) would only last about two years before the golden triangle or central/South America picked up the slack.
This.
Moreover, let's suppose Talcum's right, and such a thing would hammer the availability of street opiates. Are addicts gonna' stop, just because it got more expensive? No. They're just going to do more crime to pay for their addiction.
Which is the real problem with junkies in the first place. I don't care---other than to feel some pity for their condition---if a junkie's a junkie, and not in my circle of family or friends. Not really care, anyway. I do care, very strongly, when they break into my shit to get the money they need to support their habit.
Um, no, I think it's entirely practical, given that the potency difference means you can replace a quite literal ton of pure heroin with less than a half a pound of pure carfentanyl. Any system that's up to smuggling tons of heroin into the US from Afghanistan is up to smuggling pounds of carfentanyl from China to replace it.
And the five-thousand-fold potency difference is why there's such a problem with getting the dilution right, and thus why the net effect of eliminating the natural opiate supply would simply to be to kill more people.
"...The real truth is because of Zionist Israel and its lobbying power in Washington, along with the blackmail program run by Jeffery Epstein that has blackmailed nearly ever congressman in Washington not to mention the news media, corporate and sports..."
Do you have to be a Nazi to imagine such tin-foil-hat bullshit, or do you become a Nazi since you're stupid enough to believe such tin-foil-hat bullshit?
Libertarian moment! How many articles will Reason get to publish about this between May and September? Congrats Reason!
Who is the lying dog-faced pony soldier now? Once again, the world (and the U.S. enemies) see that America's word means little.
But then the people chose four more years of Perpetual War in the Middle East instead of four more years of mean tweets and undignified persona.
Let's be honest here. More voters chose the mean tweets, but a well-funded cabal of powerful people ensured that perpetual war got more votes.
If the Con Man hadn't pulled out of an NNP agreement that prevented Iran from nuking up we might have some credibility left.
"If the Con Man hadn’t pulled out of an NNP agreement that prevented Iran from nuking up..."
Turd posts the same lie that’s been jammed in his face many times; Ken figures (and I agree) that turd’s mental capabilities are such that he is simply not able to separate his lies from reality.
Yes, he’s dishonest, but that is a result, not an explanation: It’s because he’s abysmally stupid.
that prevented Iran from nuking up
It didn't prevent jackshit. Even Russia and China noted that Iran resumed their nuclear program while Obama was still in office.
Hey Boehm, even a puppy learns not to crap on the carpet after having it's nose rubbed in it's own shit a time or two.
Yet you persist.
Will there be a "Mission Accomplished " parade? will Ann-Margaret be there?
Credit where it’s due, but at least Boehm finally acknowledged that Trump negotiated a peace deal. Something you would think a libertarian magazine would have given more than a passing mention before now.
Just couldn't countenance the boorish tweets! To adolescent sensibilities (regardless of age), personality and manners are far more important than deeds.
For example, read any account of Kim Philby; the Brit security examiners were far more interested in the opinions of his Cambridge classmates and London club members than any actual examination into his activities.
Unfortunately, since he had access to US intelligence and Biden sits in the WH, *WE* get what *THEY* deserve
I hadn’t heard of him before (not all that surprising). I’ll get lost down the Wikipedia hole now!
You'll soon get a dose of "The Cambridge Five"; almost as bad a failure of Brit "security" as Klaus Fuchs, who handed over the nuclear bomb blue-prints to the Bolshies.
Worse, IMHO, for the breadth of their subversion, if not the magnitude of giving the special nuclear information to the Soviets. Wonder what historians will say, fifty years from now (and again, if anyone is left to read it) about the Awans? Employment settlement aside.
Besides, if it wasn't Fuchs, Oppenheimer would have found some other way to make things more 'fair', internationally.
"Besides, if it wasn’t Fuchs, Oppenheimer would have found some other way to make things more ‘fair’, internationally."
Yet to have seen any evidence of that. Yes, he engaged in fore-lock tugging after the bombing, but in none of *any* of my reading was it beyond a 'suggestion' that he was a spook.
Thoughts on this roundtable by the Wilson Center, discussing the "Merkulov Letter" between Merkulov and Beria, in October 1944 and the help that---allegedly---Oppenheimer was already providing the Comintern? https://www.wilsoncenter.org/publication/was-oppenheimer-soviet-spy-roundtable-discussion
I think they make a compelling case that Oppenheimer was at least playing footsie with the Soviets, if not knowingly giving them free rein throughout Los Alamos.
I mean, the passage in the letter cited at the top of the roundtable
Sounds pretty damned unequivocal. Now, Boris could have been full of shit. But would Robert Oppenheimer have been an impressive enough figure for Merkulov to be bullshitting to Beria that this guy was helping out greater global Communism? In October 1944? It's not like Merkulov he was claiming that, e.g., he'd penetrated George Marshall's staff
And now that I've thought about it...yeah, by that point Beria had likely heard of the technical leader (cf Leslie Groves) of the operation threatening to give the Yankee imperialists, a world-changing, really big bomb. Especially if Fuchs by that point had kept them appraised enough to know they were getting close enough to test it.
Which they of course would, in less than a year. I had confused the letter's date in my head with the time in the letter's contents, saying they'd been receiving assistance from Oppy in 1942.
Considering the Rosenbergs were passing along secrets out of Los Alamos given to them by Ethel's brother and Russell McNutt, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Oppenheimer was a traitor, too, if he's being outright named by a handler. The Roosevelt administration was chock full of Soviet spies and fellow travelers by that period.
Note the post-hoc narrative that emerged in the early 1960s that McCarthyism was a time of unwarranted hyper-paranoia, despite the fact that the declassified Soviet cables revealed how compromised the US government was generally and the Democratic party specifically. It's one of the best gaslighting campaigns in American history.
McCarthy may have been a thug. But he wasn't wrong.
Times like these, I miss having John join in the conversation. I've gotten some great history tips from Sevo---Downfall is excellent. Read it now if you've an interest in the Pacific Theater of WW2---and I'm genuinely curious about his interpretation of tidbits like the letter at the center of that Wilson Center roundtable.
My own opinion is that, like many insanely bright people, Oppenheimer thought he could sup with the Devil, provided he had a sufficiently long spoon. Plus, though I'm heavily influenced by Rhodes on this, I think Oppenheimer genuinely thought that: he was more willing to trust his opinion on geopolitics over the US Military's, and that the world would be more peaceful if both sides had the Bomb. I also think he was dangerously naive about just how capital-E Evil Communism really was.
Try this book on Guy Burgess:
https://libgen.is/book/index.php?md5=4B054CBEE857759416A546D3A7CFCFAD
He was a drunk, a communist, a homosexual with bad personal hygiene. He charmed Winston Churchill and was apparently able to talk any man or woman into his bed. Before he was sent to Washington, his superior in London told him he would have to tone down his communist talk, homosexual cavorting, and keep his distance from the local blacks. Burgess responded he'd have an affair with Paul Robeson, the black communist vocalist bisexual, as some rumors would have it.
This guy was so over the top, you'd reject it if it were fiction.
"Over the top"?
The book rated 10-12 marginal notes. He was gay and a drinker, but had nowhere near the history of Fuchs.
Did Fuchs get invited to Churchill's residence, gripe about the Munich agreement and receive a book with a friendly inscription? No? Didn't think so. Burgess did all that and more.
He was apparently a truly magnetic character who only went too far when he got stinking drunk at a party of a bunch of CIA agents and their wives, and drew a lewd sketch of one of the wives causing her to burst into tears and her husband to pounce on Burgess. Within a few months of the party, the pouncing husband, Bill Harvey, had identified Philby and Burgess as spies.
"Did Fuchs get invited to Churchill’s residence, gripe about the Munich agreement and receive a book with a friendly inscription? No? Didn’t think so. Burgess did all that and more..."
Try posting something other than blither for once.
Or better yet, fuck off and die.
Top Republicans on the Senate and House Armed Services Committee criticized President Obama in June 2014 for negotiating with the Taliban in freeing Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for the release of five Guantanamo Bay prisoners.
Do you know if Trump joined those criticizing Obama or did he buck partisan lines here? Those other Republicans objected to the deal in keeping with the pretense that the US does not negotiate with terrorists, something that never seemed to trouble Trump.
Stuff your TDS up your ass - your head needs company, troll.
Simple question: Did Trump join McCain and other Republicans in criticizing Obama's trade or did he not? Not that it matters, I'm just curious. With Trump you never know.
And I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Truly I was curious. For my sins, evidently more curious than yourself.
"Simple question: Did Trump join McCain and other Republicans in criticizing Obama’s trade or did he not? Not that it matters, I’m just curious. With Trump you never know."
Simple answer troll: Given the lack of context, your "question" is a mystery to me as it would be to anyone even slightly more intelligent than you.
----------------------------------------------------
"And I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. Truly I was curious. For my sins, evidently more curious than yourself."
You didn't 'hurt my feelings' at all, troll, you simply admitted you are a TDS-addled asshole.
Well let me put it this way:
Which answer is more TDS, he did or he didn't?
And I'm glad I didn't hurt your feelings. I know you have been sensitive about perceived criticism of Trump, and it's good you are finally overcoming this.
"Well let me put it this way:
Which answer is more TDS, he did or he didn’t?"
Well let me put it this way, troll:
Given the continuous lack of context, WIH was that intended to address?
You seem confused, which, given your idiocy, is not surprising. Still trolling for another click on your handle, asshole?
Seems my question has hit a nerve. I withdraw my question. Some questions are better not asked, let alone answered.
Seems your still full of shit.
Seems you can't get enough of my shit.
"seems willing to add a few more lives to that grim tally just so we can all enjoy the poetic symmetry"
I seriously doubt that. There's a speech tomorrow and I'm sure we'll hear all about it. Leaving around 9/11 could strategically poetic though because it may remind the Taliban just exactly why we were there in the first place and exactly what they shouldn't participate in, i.e. involving themselves in plots against the USA, if they don't want us coming back. It'll be Biden's withdrawal and since he'll own it, it probably explains why the date was changed. On the face of it, it gives more time for preparation and more time to keep the Taliban from unleashing on the Afghan govt without us around. I think the summer is the fighting season. Biden is buying the Afghan allies another year.
"I seriously doubt that..."
Yeah, but you're full of shit and still can't get out of the sixth grade, so it's odds-on not even your mommy cares about your opinions.
"Ah, but a little more violence is nothing compared to the allure of a symbolic withdrawal on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that drew America into its longest-ever war in the first place, right?"
Wait. What?
POTUS is linking Afghanistan to terrorists?
Isn't that...
ISLAMOPHOBIA?
I'll take the "over" on being out in 5 months.
The Biden admin has 3+ years left; why be stingy?
I can see no reason for the delay except the hope that the Taliban will deliver a crucial blow to the Afghan government, giving us an excuse to stay. This is pure theater. We are not out of Afghanistan until we are out of Afghanistan. Biden is a fucking snake.
"This is pure theater."
Yes and Afghanistan is but a side show. Iran is the headliner.
" Iran is the headliner."
Iran would be a real fight, with real consequences - both military and financial. The Pentagon has done just fine "not winning" the little ones. They are not prepared to risk their own asses losing a big one. Likewise the big money does not want to take the financial hit to the global markets that such a conflict would certainly entail. So Biden's handlers caving to Iran will continue.
The cyber attack on Natanz was Israel reminding Biden's handlers that they are not the only voice in the matter.
Afghanistan, meanwhile, is good business for the Pentagon and it's corporate partners. So Biden's handlers will find a way to keep us there. It's only taxpayer money and the lives of a few deplorables - well worth it as far as they are all concerned.
"The Pentagon has done just fine “not winning” the little ones. They are not prepared to risk their own asses losing a big one. Likewise the big money does not want to take the financial hit to the global markets that such a conflict would certainly entail. So Biden’s handlers caving to Iran will continue."
Agree with the whole post, but this quote is also really applicable to anyone who thinks getting involved in the incipient Russia-Ukraine full-scale fight would be a good idea. That fight could go real sideways, real fast. Which is why, contra reports last week, that the USN is not going to be sending two Burkes into the Black Sea after all.
Two Burkes into the Black Sea wasn't going to impress anyone who matters anyway.
Remember Robert Conrad putting an Everready on his shoulder? The action had nothing to do with the battery. All the players over there know that Biden's handlers are no Robert Conrad.
True, but this way, we don't risk a 'Remember the Maine!' situation.
I just thought the 180 by the USN was interesting, and unfortunately means that Vlad ain't bluffing here. Probably also isn't stopping at merely shoring up Donbas/Luhansk.
"Iran would be a real fight,"
Just ask Ken Shultz. He'll tell you squeezing Iran with a few more economic sanctions and the population will rise up and replace the Ayatollahs with pro-American neo liberals. No fight necessary. Life is good.
I can see no reason for the delay except the hope that the Taliban will deliver a crucial blow to the Afghan government, giving us an excuse to stay.
I suspect what they're really hoping for is an attack on American troops (which would be understandable considering we broke our agreement to leave by May 1st) in order to continue the justification for occupying the country.
Why think small? A CONUS civilian strike is a hell of a lot easier to achieve, than trying to kill a bunch of US military personnel, and better serves the goal of distracting the US from other theaters of operation. (Or the complete looting that the elite class is currently doing with the US economy.)
Snake because he doesn't get out on stackofcoins timetable.
Lay off the hyperbole there chief. It'll be ok.
Considering there's an actual agreement to withdraw by May 1st, and we're on the cusp of breaking that agreement thanks to the dithering by your side, you're not really in a position to be smug about it, you piece of shit.
"Ah, but a little more violence is nothing compared to the allure of a symbolic withdrawal on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that drew America into its longest-ever war in the first place, right?"
A little more violence, which would be the perfect reason to extend the "war"? How else will Biden be able to get loads of sweet, sweet taxpayer money to his cronies?
Infrastructure!
All so Biden can say he did it. Wanna bet we keep some troops and/or "contractors" there for another generation.
Yeah, why not just roll with a plan drawn up by a pretty incompetent admin (you know, the one whose leader drew on a map with sharpie to say how he was right about a hurricane)?
Taking time to make a valid decision, especially while otherwise dealing with a pandemic, sitting new cabinet people and appointing others, etc. seems quite sound of mind.
Far better than your kneejerk reaction to just up and leave on an arbitary timetable drawn up, again, by questionable at best people (you know, the dregs still left standing at the end of the shitshow that was the Trump admin.)
Far better than your kneejerk reaction to just up and leave on an arbitary timetable drawn up, again, by questionable at best people (you know, the dregs still left standing at the end of the shitshow that was the Trump admin.)
10 years nearly to the day after Bin Laden was killed is an "arbitrary" timetable?
Fuck off with your gaslighting.
Leaving on trump's time frame would be tantamount to giving him "a win" politically. Holding off another 4 months makes it clear that they were pulled out by a Dem President instead.
Someone in the White House must have told Joe that the difference would make the troops switch to voting for Dems once they had the significance of it explained to them...
May 1, Sept 11, whatever. We should have gone in on Sept 12 2001, cleaned out the training camps, knocked out the Taliban, and then handed the mess to the UN or NATO. We had the world's backing and good will at that point, now it's just a point of contention. It would be the same hellhole now in either case, but we would not have wasted so many lives and dollars and focus for these 20 years!
