Brickbat: Is This Thing On?

A teacher in California's Palmdale School district has resigned after her racist remarks were caught on video. Kimberly Newman had a Zoom conference with Katura Stokes, the mother of one of her students, to discuss problems the boy was having with online learning. After the meeting was over, not realizing that Zoom was still on, Newman reportedly complains to someone with her that she and other teachers have tried to discuss the boy's problems with the mother all school year, saying this was "the first time I reached that woman the whole year." "These parents, that's what kinds of pieces of s--- they are," Newman said. "Black. He's black. They're a black family."

At least she didn't say their colored.
Well, at least the teacher didn't call the cops to go and drag mom to the Zoom conference. Not even a dog got shot! Count your blessings!
Just the facts, ma'am.
"Black. He's black. They're a black family."
The truth shall set you free.

Another reason teachers should want in-person learning to resume.
I went to school in Compton, California. I was frequently the only white in the classroom. About 10% of the Black kids came from families where they all sat down to dinner together and it was "Yes, Mam,""May I be excused?" The kids had to show the finished homework every evening. They were like the Koreans we knew.
About 30% of the families were more open, pretty much like most white families.
The rest of the Black families did not seem to care what the kids did, so long as they were not too loud. Those kids mostly did little or no homework. Things were often fun at their homes, but pretty chaotic.
The issue is not, as the Palmdale teacher perhaps assumed, racial but rather cultural. Too bad for her that she did not have the experience to see that.
100% yes
^^^^
Similar in my home town. The cultures were different. A split between townie Whites and farm Whites and po Whites. Asians were 90% "Yes, Ma'am".
We didn't have Blacks, but we had Latinos. You knew who had wetback parents. They didn't have time for extracurricular activities, but they always had time to get their homework done. Then there were the Chicanos. Legal citizens, but grew up on welfare, and had that same 60% whatever attitude. As we said, we had White Rednecks and Brown Rednecks, and you could tell them apart because one wore hats and the other bandanas.
"These parents, that's what kinds of pieces of s— they are," Newman said. "Black. He's black. They're a black family."
Why can't all these things be true?
Why can’t all these things be true?
Who asserted that they weren't?
It's perfectly ok, if the word "these" meant "the Joneses". The Joneses are pieces of s--t. He's a black kid.
An observation that surprises no one.
It's mistake to ascribe any conduct to race but culture and other environmental factors well now that's a diiferent story.
They (the Irish) live on beasts only, and live like beasts. They have not progressed at all from the habits of pastoral living. ..This is a filthy people, wallowing in vice. Of all peoples it is the least instructed in the rudiments of the faith. They do not yet pay tithes or first fruits or contract marriages. They do not avoid incest.
— Gerald of Wales[74]
Yes, I am a Jew, and when the [Irish] ancestors of the Right Honourable gentleman were brutal savages in an unknown island, mine were priests in the temple of Solomon.
— Benjamin Disraeli reply to a taunt by Irish MP Daniel O'Connell[75]
I am haunted by the human chimpanzees I saw along that hundred miles of horrible country...to see white chimpanzees is dreadful; if they were black one would not see it so much, but their skins, except where tanned by exposure, are as white as ours.
— Cambridge historian Charles Kingsley, letter to his wife from Ireland, 1860
Our ancestors cut a civilisation out of the bogs and meadows while Mr Haughey's [Irish] ancestors were wearing pig skins and living in caves
— Ian Paisley[76]
Marry those be the most barbaric and loathy conditions of any people (I think) under heaven...They [the Irish] do use all the beastly behaviour that may be, they oppress all men, they spoil as well the subject, as the enemy; they steal, they are cruel and bloody, full of revenge, and delighting in deadly execution, licentious, swearers and blasphemers, common ravishers of women, and murderers of children.
— Edmund Spenser, A View of the State of Ireland, 1596
Margaret Thatcher came up to me and she said, 'I’ve got one thing to say to you, my boy ... you can’t trust the Irish, they are all liars', she said, 'liars, and that’s what you have to remember, so just don’t forget it. With that she waltzed off and that was my only personal exposure to her
— Peter Mandelson[77]
The judgement of God sent the calamity to teach the Irish a lesson, that calamity must not be too much mitigated. …The real evil with which we have to contend is not the physical evil of the Famine, but the moral evil of the selfish, perverse and turbulent character of the people.
— Charles Trevelyan, head of administration for famine relief during the Great Irish famine[78]
If anybody knocks on your door that has an Irish accent, automatically ask them to leave.
— Marlene Kairouz member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly and Minister for Consumer Affairs Victoria[79]
...I often wonder where they would have been,
If we hadn’t have taken them in. Fed them and washed them. Thousands in Glasgow alone. From Ireland they came. Brought us nothing but trouble and shame. Well the famine is over.
Why don’t they go home?
— [Ulster Loyalists] about the Great Famine, and large population of Irish Immigrant descendants in Glasgow. [80]
Good to know you are anti Irish.
Wow. You resorted to quotes dating back to the 1100s to not make a point.
And much of that "mean" condition was due to Brit rule.
Can't wait for my reparations!
She said the quite part out loud in a bigoted, derogatory manner. It is both true the teacher deserved to be fired AND some families aren't able or willing to make school a priority.
The losers? The kids in the family who will blame the teacher's issues as the only reason they fail in life, while the parent's issues are excused or, worse, elevated to sainted victim.
People suck.
We don't know that the parents have an issue, all we know is the racist commentary on them.
Limited info: Newman reportedly complains to someone with her that she and other teachers have tried to discuss the boy's problems with the mother all school year, saying this was "the first time I reached that woman the whole year."
There is an issue. The root cause is, of course, simply speculation.
There is an issue.
Be aware that there are large numbers of highly-educated individuals who feel that failure to perform up to the standards of racist state employees is not an issue.
Presumably the issue isn't that the kid is being abused or abusive, so it becomes a very valid question of why the issue doesn't rest solely in the school's lap. The obvious solution to kids having trouble with e-learning is to have them sitting in desks 8 hours a day, what are the parents supposed to do about that? You might say that they have to notify the parents before changing the requirement that the kid come back to school but, again, they almost assuredly didn't require that standard when kicking him out.
You're assuming the teacher is correct. As a racist I see that she's excuse making. I am NOT going to assume she is being truthful.
Yeah, what the problems or issues are isn't clear. Obviously a generous reading but; a laggy internet connection and parents who got tired of hearing teachers and administrators bitch about it last spring fits the bill.
no phones in all of Palmdale?
Wow really nice thoughts Best school in delhi
has resigned
Just to be explicit. She effectively said "This student is a piece of shit because his parents are black." and the school district *allowed* her to resign. I'm pretty sure there are police officers who aren't drawing pension because of less derisive comments they made on bodycam video about no one in particular.
