'We Have Followed Proper Channels and They're Not Working': Dispatch From Minneapolis
Thoughts on rioting and protest from a local activist who is demonstrating outside the courthouse where the murder trial of Derek Chauvin is taking place.

It's 10:45 a.m. and the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, taking place inside the Hennepin Courthouse in downtown Minneapolis, has entered day two. Outside the courthouse, a handful of people have gathered near a cyclone fence festooned with paper hearts and lined with paintings of Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. "All cops are bastards!" chant the assembled. "Indict! Convict! Send that killer cop to jail! The whole damn system is guilty as hell!"
One person not chanting at the moment is Kaia Hirt, who is busy adjusting the heavy chain that she has lashed across her chest and locked to the cyclone fence. A tenth grade English teacher in Champlin, 25 miles north of Minneapolis, Hirt tells me that while she had previously attended "multiple protests throughout the suburbs and in the Twin Cities areas," the death of George Floyd catalyzed for her the urgent need to fight racist policies and actions.
With the temperature at around 35 degrees and an icy wind making one wish for mittens, Hirt, of Korean extraction and wearing a Black Lives Matter face mask, allows herself to be covered in a blanket as she tells me where she was when George Floyd was killed and why she is here today. Her comments have been edited for length and clarity.
"I am a local activist and organizer and I decided to chain myself to this fence to draw attention to the fact that there are 450 people who were killed by the police in Minnesota since 1984. Their families are still seeking justice for those police homicides. I've always protested and I've always considered my job as an educator to be an anti-racist and to include [anti-racist] narratives in my curriculum. I always hoped that teaching would help me make a difference in people's lives and in the world, but after George Floyd, I really felt I needed to do more."
Do you remember where you were when you learned George Floyd had died in police custody?
"I think I was at home and I was on social media when I first saw it, and obviously, like all of us, it was devastating. I was speechless. I cried. And you know, when you teach young black men, and you see the way they're treated, even in schools, you know that they could be next. The research has been done that people tend to see black males as much older than they are. And treat them as such, even when they're just boys. Look at Tamir Rice. And so my fear for my students is part of what drives me to be involved. I live in a suburb that is fairly privileged and affluent, Minnetonka, and I'm frustrated with the lack of involvement that I see in the community and sort of an apathy towards things that are happening. And so I began by hosting events out there."
You were in Minnetonka after Floyd's death. Did you see much violence in your area?
"Not personally, no. I mean, I definitely protested in the city during that period of time, and I actually protested on a couple of days that later became quite tumultuous. I have friends who were very fearful, who lived in the neighborhood [where Floyd died] at the time, and the constant helicopters; sleeping in the basement instead of the bedroom; sleeping with weapons that they could find around the house, like a hammer or a golf club.
I believe they were afraid of the unrest that was occurring, and also very afraid of police. My friends were BIPOC [black, indigenous, and people of color]. I was told there were citizen patrols trying to protect their blocks from vandalism or looters or whatever, and I said to a friend, 'Are you gonna go out?' And he said, 'You know, it's a little different when you're not white, to go out and try to protect your neighborhood and carry weapons. I could easily be mistaken in some way and be harmed myself.'"
The reaction to Floyd's death has been enormous and profound, hundreds of millions of people around the world responding or being affected by what happened to one person in Minneapolis. What would you say to any naysayers who question this response, who say, there's something going on that is out of proportion to the killing itself?
"I would say those naysayers are absolutely ridiculous and do not understand white supremacist history. I would say those naysayers have not studied slavery. African people were abducted from Africa, taken away from their families on slave ships, brought to this country to labor for free, tortured, humiliated, dehumanized, raped, and killed, followed by a century of lynching; 8,000 people in this country were lynched without trial, without accusation, sometimes with the police being involved. Segregation, which you have from the 1860s to 1960s, essentially legalized racism, where people of color were compared with dogs; the restaurant signs would say, 'No Dogs, No Mexicans, No Negroes.' There were segregated water fountains, segregated schools, and it was all hidden under the guise of separate but equal, which we all know is a lie because those things were not equal.
And then we take a look at the disparities today, particularly here in Minnesota. What you are talking about is disparities in health care, disparities in education, disparities in housing, disparities in employment. How can you say, how can these naysayers—or dare I say white supremacists—say that there is an overreaction to a cop kneeling on a man's neck, for nine minutes, killing him, over a $20 forged bill? I'm not even gonna say the words that come to mind because you're recording me, but I'll tell you what, that is unacceptable. Those people should be ashamed."
What do you expect to happen on the ground now? I was told there were thousands of activists from other cities descending on Minneapolis for the trial.
[Hirt laughs.] "There's five of us now."
Five, exactly. What are you expecting to happen?
"Listen, the people of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, the activists, we're tired. We are very tired because we have been fighting for justice not just for George Floyd, but for these 450 people who have lost their lives to police homicide, and you know what? If we're angry, we have every right to be angry. We are a peaceful group. We are about peace, we are about safety, and we are about love. We don't burn our own community down, but I'll tell you what, Martin Luther King Jr. said that riots are the language of the unheard. People of color have been asked to wait. 'A right delayed is a right denied,' OK? And so what we're talking about is the language of the unheard. The idea that, oh, the liberal white moderate says, 'Follow proper channels. Wait, this isn't the right time. Can you do it like this and not like that? Can you please do it in a way that's pleasing to us; that isn't scary to us?'
We follow proper channels. We try to use democracy. Now we run into obstacles to voting, right? Voter suppression. We try to do it through…I can't even, I'm so enraged right now. We have followed proper channels and they're not working. Nothing is changing. Black people are being killed for holding a cellphone while mass shooters, white mass shooters, are apprehended without a hair hurt on their head. There is a disparity and a double standard there that is unacceptable, and anyone who is paying attention can see it."
If the trial has a dissatisfying outcome, what happens in the city?
"We are peaceful activists. You need to understand American history, white supremacist history, to understand the suffering and oppression of black people and other people of color, Native indigenous people, okay?"
I have a Native daughter.
"But you're still white."
True.
"If there is rioting, that would be completely understandable and that is what Martin Luther King Jr. tells us. He says that we have been unheard; we have been told to wait; we have been told that we're not resisting in the right way. What is the right way? We kneel during the national anthem. Well, that's not okay. What is okay? What is peaceful?"
How long do you plan to stay chained here?
"As long as I fucking feel like it. These locks are peaceful. This is a peaceful demonstration. It does not destroy the property. It is not violent. It isn't even loud. Every lock has the name of a person who was killed by the police [written on it]. A person who was killed by the police, along with their story. These aren't just names. There are stories behind how they were killed.
I'm not saying there will be, but I'm saying, if there are riots [after the trial], you need to understand American history. You need to understand hundreds of years of flat-out oppression and efforts to change everything in a peaceful way. It doesn't justify anything, but it explains it. And I would not judge one single person if this city burns."

I sincerely hope that the good citizens of Minneapolis remove the security of their city counsel members. That would bring the "equity" needed. If they favor "bread and circuses" over law and order, it is high time that they get to be part of the show.
Can't do that, the citizens that have no security are just political fodder. Silly of you to mention the worthless peons. Their government masters need that protection.
Yep

If your City Council has been promising Hope and Change since the riots of 1968, and you're still getting all Hope and no Change, "using democracy" consists of firing your City Council and voting for someone besides the party who keeps letting you down.
Partisans are the real problem. Like the other party will be any fucking better?!?! ABOLISH political parties and kill 2 birds with one stone. The mafioso parties and their stupid followers!
^^^^^ exactly.
I am making over $9k a month working part time. I stored being attentive to different human beings inform me how much money they are able to make on line so I decided to lok into it. well, it turned into all actual and has completely modified my life.
That is what I do.... Money Star
This is true.
But it is also true that if Minneapolis is steeped in “white supremacy”, as per the narrative of the chained person, then it’s because the people of Minneapolis have been elected them. And they’re all democrats, and have been for decades.
This is the same in EVERY large city. But their argument is:
Over the last several decades we tried electing Democrats to fix the problem of white supremacy and all we’ve gotten is more white supremacy. Goddamn those white supremacist Republicans.*
*There are no white supremacists who’ve run Minneapolis ever, and the entire argument of white supremacy is a farce.
BIPOC were doing quite well under Trump....
You seem to think just because two fundamentally contradictory ideologies have formed party lines that throwing away the party platform (i.e. the ideology) would be throwing away people's ability to think and/or relate.
I'm afraid as long as people are autonomous creatures there will always be ideology lines.

Jails, and harsh sentences found their way back into the mainstream I see.
Yes, but you don't understand, it's not wrong when we do it.
>>"But you're still white."
fuck you nobody chooses their birth.
Yes, but you can choose how you behave with the unfortunate results of life's lottery. You may not choose to BE white, but you can certainly choose to not ACT white.
I have several hip-hop channels marked as favorites @siriusxm.
I Call BS, you probably don't ever laugh at tylar perry
but you can certainly choose to not ACT white.
You can have my mayonnaise when you pry the jar from my cold, dead hands.
^ the most sensible comment so far.
And what, the bloody fuck, does that mean??
Educate yourself. Read Robin DiAngelo's book and reap the moral rewards of anti-racism.
Diana Reynolds:
DiAngelo?! Yikes no.
Read Lindsay and Pluckrose’s “Cynical Theories” instead.
I don't need to read the ramblings of some alt-right troll. Be on the right side of history. Be anti-racist, be less white. Be for the future. The future isn't white.
"Be less black" - KKK member
"Be less Jewish" - NSDAP member
"Be less white" - Diane Reynolds
Be less obvious!
You've become more bumper sticker than person.
Be better.
"Read Robin DiAngelo’s book and reap the moral rewards of anti-racism."
I have. It's all about how White Liberals, who have White Privilege, are oppressing Black folks, but Black folks can't do anything about it because they're oppressed, so White Liberals have to save them.
The only time she directly mentions White supremacists is when she cites a study saying that Conservatives kicked them to the curb back in the 1980s.
Of course the idea that White Liberals can oppress all Black folks because they have White Privilege sounds a lot like White Supremacy to me. But then I'm just an old gray-haired guy who remembers things.
I'd read DiAngelo if I had a public library open (they're still closed from Wuhan SARS panic) or if I could find a bookstore that would let me walk out with a free copy.
I've had to settle for Cynical Theories by Pluckrose and Lindsey, and Explaining Postmodernism by Hicks.
From what I've seen from DRP, I'm pretty sure he is being sarcastic.
This is where you're supposed to say, "Don't get me killed, new guy..."
"I don’t need to read the ramblings of some alt-right troll. Be on the right side of history. Be anti-racist, be less white. Be for the future. The future isn’t white"
FYI: You're butting up against that Poe thing pretty good there chum. You damn near read like the abortion of a union between Tony and Hicklib. OBL has dibs, and with the addition of the Rabi's risible ramblings nowadays I'm not sure we can handle yet another parody that channels Lenny Bruce.
Rabbi; damn, he'd metaphorically slay me for such a goy glitch
Fuck off, racist
diane, your remarks are offensive to anyone that has half a brain. i come from irish immgrants that were greeted in the 1920's with "no irish need apply" signs and cartoons depicting us as apes and chimps. i have spent 45 years working my dick into the dirt and don't need your self important virtue signaling assholery. i married a gal far from my race and can assure you my kids have not been treated poorly except by folks like you that wish to burden them with your self hate and encouragement to define themselves by the color of their skin and not the content of their character. fuck you and all like you that are tearing this nation apart with your shitty attitude
I am not really sure what "not ACT white" means. Yet I am white and, by my understanding cannot escape that. My parents, early on, along with a minimal amount of Christian Sunday school instruction, and regular grammar school indoctrination had imprinted the standard American mythology. That might have predisposed me to treat people individually, based on actual knowledge when possible and reasonable default assumptions otherwise. Our community population was nearly all white. About half were Catholics (mostly of Irish ancestry) and most of the rest, like us, belonged to one or another mainstream Protestant denomination. There were a few Jewish and several Chinese families, a considerable number of East and South European first or second generation Americans and rumors, not particularly noted, that there might be a Negro family living in one of the nearby high rise apartment buildings. After 1957, there was a noticeable influx of Hungarians.
With that background I followed my nature and acted white:
- attended school regularly (and would have caught hell otherwise);
- studied moderately, attained a decent GPA, and graduated high school;
- attended and graduated from an accredited college;
- got a job and did it satisfactorily enough to get a series of successively better ones;
- got a house, gradually paid it off;
- got married, had and helped raise the standard 2 children (rounded);
- stayed married;
- got a master's degree (mostly via evening classes);
- lived within our means and saved money when and as possible;
After a bit over 40 years, I retired, as did my wife, who began working when our youngest was in middle school; that augmented our standard of living and savings. Along the way, we were able to fund university educations (state schools) for our children to help them start the main part of their "acting white" journey.
Along the way I knew, as neighbors or fellow employees, quite a few people who were "acting white" in pretty much the same way. Most were white. Some were immigrants or first generation US born (mostly East Asian), but many more were black. A noticeable number of them were gay or lesbian, but that seemed easy enough to deal with.
Now: tell me why, exactly, should I "not ACT white" and how I should change my behavior.
That whole "Act White" thing is stale and stereotypical. Whites range widely in culture, heritage, and advantages in life.
Hard to get interested in a person spewing facts and statistics that are wrong (figures approximate) - "Nearly 3,500 African Americans and 1,300 whites were lynched in the United States between 1882 and 1968." Not 8K.
Kaia Hirt got a point across, with what she said. I'm not sure it's the point she wanted to make, however.
love how she mis-interprets King and then chains *herself* to the fence. maroon.
Misinterprets/misrepresents both Kings. At least when she says white liberal moderates are saying "Wait, this isn't the right time.", I presumed she was quoting King James' respons to the Hong Kong protests.
both in the same paragraph lol
What do you expect to happen on the ground now? I was told there were thousands of activists from other cities descending on Minneapolis for the trial.
[Hirt laughs.] "There's five of us now."
Five, exactly. What are you expecting to happen?
BLM has lost some of its cachet over the last few months, forcing them to back away from their overt Marxism.
Plus, after January 6th, officials suddenly showed themselves capable of actually arresting people so maybe that took some of the fire out if their bellies as well.
"A tenth grade English teacher in Champlin, 25 miles north of Minneapolis, Hirt tells me that while she had previously attended "multiple protests throughout the suburbs and in the Twin Cities areas,"
I wonder if she thinks January 6 was an "insurrection"?
Exactly.
Note that she doesn't think it's her job to teach english
"We follow proper channels. We try to use democracy. Now we run into obstacles to voting, right? Voter suppression. We try to do it through…I can't even, I'm so enraged right now. We have followed proper channels and they're not working. Nothing is changing."
When she's talking about "voter suppression" here, she must be talking about Minnesota Democrats (and/or referred to as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota) using various rules to deny ballot access to the Green Party.
The governor is a Democrat. The state legislature is controlled by Democrats--both in their house and their senate. 12 of 13 members of the Minneapolis City Council are Democrats, and the 13th person on the council is a member of the Green Party. Hennepin County is ostensibly non-partisan, but the Democrat has won the vote in Hennepin County in every presidential election since 1964 except one. The people running the county might as well call themselves Democrats and Greens.
In short, when the left in Minnesota demonstrates against local and state government, they're demonstrating against themselves. Who exactly is engaging in voter suppression against them? Did the progressive lose an election they should have won?
This wouldn't be the first progressive who imagines that the people are far more behind radical policy proposals than they really are and is effectively agitating for the government to ignore what relatively moderate Democrat voters want and give them what they need--good and hard--whether they want it or not.
This wouldn't be the first time I've seen a progressive effectively describe their elected leaders refusing to ignore the voters as "voter suppression". After all, the first rule of progressive club is that the people want what the progressives want. The second rule of progressive club states that if the people don't want what the progressives want, see the first rule of progressive club.
In other words, if the people don't want what progressives want, then it must be because of things like "misinformation" and "voter suppression".
Governor is a Democrat
State legislature is controlled by Democrats–both parts
City Council are Democrats
Those fucking Republicans!
And the county might as well be controlled by Democrats!
Minneapolis is basically a one-party state, which the left controls, and they still demonstrate against . . . themselves . . . as if they were demonstrating against the right?
The left literally controls everything in the state, and they talk about "voter suppression" as if . . . they should have won an election somewhere but lost? Which election did they lose?!
Did they lose it to a Republican? The left controls everything in Minneapolis!
Whenever I hear people who think that progressive policies will someday get so bad that the voters there will change course, I always think of Detroit, a city where things got so bad, the fire department wouldn't bother to put out a fire in a burning building unless someone could confirm that the building was occupied. How bad does progressive government have to get before the voters change course? Much worse than when buildings in that progressive city aren't worth the cost of putting out the fire that's burning them to the ground. We know that because the people of Detroit still haven't changed course!
We often talk about progressives as people who can't comprehend the likely consequences of their policies before they're enacted. That isn't nearly as bad as being incapable of understanding the consequences of their polices--not even after they've destroyed the place.
I wonder if there is any critical mass of voters in Minneapolis who have even considered trying divided government instead of the one party state they presently suffer. The candidates who win their elections are picked by government employee unions (like teachers and law enforcement) in the primaries--because the voters are so stupid, they won't vote for Republicans and divided government, no matter how badly the candidates nominated by the teachers and law enforcement unions treat them.
I think that Republicans and the right could do a lot better marketing themselves to urban minorities. They tend to be pretty socially conservative, and have a lot to gain from increased economic freedom. It shouldn't be so hard to convince more people that the welfare state and other examples of well intentioned "help" is a big part of why things are so fucked up in certain places and communities.
They did a pretty good job in South Florida with Cubans.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/trump-cultivated-latino-vote-florida-it-paid-n1246226
A lot of that was about the Democrats shooting themselves in the foot by openly embracing socialism by name.
But if you don't call it "socialism" but "economic equity" instead, it's a winning strategy to buy votes with voter's money.
To even suggest that is met with charges of white supremacy.
And the appropriate response to that is "fuck off".
Hey! Quit picking on my home town! Actually, most of the people have left the city. Too much crime, taxes too high and no jobs.
What's left is an amusement park (ballparks and bars) downtown for suburbanites to come amuse themselves in.
I don't know which is worse....Republicans magically manipulating Democrat-controlled states/cities or the white supremacists forcing black Americans to assault Asian Americans.
Ha ha ha.
Where is the Zodiac Killer to rid me of garbage like this maladroit teacher?
Hey, she's just trying to avoid getting carjacked and murdered by a 13 year old who cares more about her phone than the death she caused.
Good take on Becket.
Good points.
The clown world is definitely in no danger of receding.
Your ignorance of the State is appalling.
Republicans control the Senate. Not sure it changes the overall point--just a clarification.
What do you mean?
50/50 with Kamala Harris breaking the ties does not mean the Republicans control the Senate.
The Democrats control the Senate 51-50.
I thought you were talking about the Minnesota Senate.
I was responding to "The governor is a Democrat. The state legislature is controlled by Democrats–both in their house and their senate."
You are exactly right. Democrats have only ever had 2 years of control of all three in the last 26 years.
Incorrect. The Minnesota State Senate is majority Republican. And so far most of the people arrested for rioting in Minneapolis last summer are white and live in the suburbs.
White mobs going into mostly black neighborhoods and torching them.
I heard a rumor something similar happened in Tulsa one hundred years ago.
"African people were abducted from Africa"
They were not abducted, they were purchased after being enslaved by other Africans, perhaps Arab slave traders from north Africa, or taken as prisoners by other tribes, or unruly sons sold by their fathers, or excess daughter who could not catch a husband.
Reply sent to moderation purgatory, second try - -
At this time (1665), there were only about 300 people of African origin living in the Virginia Colony, about 1% of an estimated population of 30,000. The first group of 20 or so Africans were brought to Jamestown in 1619 as indentured servants. After working out their contracts for passage money to Virginia and completing their indenture, each was granted 50 acres (20 ha) of land (headrights). This enabled them to raise their own tobacco or other crops.
In one of the earliest freedom suits, Casor argued that he was an indentured servant who had been forced by Anthony Johnson, a free black, to serve past his term; he was freed and went to work for Robert Parker as an indentured servant. Johnson sued Parker for Casor's services. In ordering Casor returned to his master, Johnson, for life, the court both declared Casor a slave and sustained the right of free blacks to own slaves.
Rewriting history. Wikipedia style
I suspect this is an attempt to conflate actual slavery, by force, with a contract of indenture, voluntarily entered into for a period of time.
This will help blur the blatant lie of slaves being brought to Jamestown in 1619, when the fact is that they were indentured servants who sold their indenture to pay the passage to the new world.
(trying to avoid multiple links - search Wikipedia for John Casor. It is an article about a court case confirming the right of free blacks to own slaves)
Interesting note concerning Wikipedia;
This is the text I captured April 15th.
This is how it now reads
At this time, there were only about 300 people of African origin living in the Virginia Colony, about 1% of an estimated population of 30,000. The first group of 20 or so Africans were brought to Point Comfort in 1619 as enslaved Africans. After working between 15 and 30 years, most were granted their freedom to purchase land and start their own homestead.
(this bit has been added)
Although most historians believe slavery, as an institution, developed much later, they differ on the exact status of their servitude before slavery was established, as well as differing over the date when this took place. The colonial charter entitled English subjects and their children the rights of the common law, but people of other nations were considered foreigners or aliens outside the common law. At the time, the colony had no provision for naturalizing foreigners.
Welcome to the revolution!
A bit more – – – –
The changes were made on October 29, 2020:
Major restatements were from ‘indentured servant’ to ‘enslaved African’, from ‘Jamestown’ to ‘Point Comfort’ (perhaps to avoid searches including Jamestown? Point Comfort is 40 miles downriver from Jamestown), from ‘granted land’ to ‘granted their freedom to purchase land’ (after serving an indenture, they were free by law, and no granting of the freedom to purchase was needed).

Kind of proves my speculation in the original reply, I think.
Black people never enslaved other tribes and indigenous peoples never killed other tribes. White folk wrote all those history books that tell those lies. It is necessary to correct the record.
The Aztecs were sun worshipping basketball players for crying out loud.
I'm surprised she isn't the author of such a diatribe of revisionist history
Your church lies about it's history AND YOU BELIEVE THEM! you have no business lecturing anyone on history.
Shut the fuck up Mormon fascist!
When I pointed out the book of Abraham had been discredited you said it hadn't.
YES IT HAS AND ITS EASY TO FIND OUT! Stop buying your church's lies you stupid fucking fascist!
Her statement that people don't study history is risible but also concerning if she is a teacher.
It doesn't matter who captured them. How nice though of those white men to p[urchse them and enslave them. Give me a fucking break.
Good lord are you an asshole.
Jesus, get your emotions in check. He was responding to the idea that those white people were "abducting people from Africa". The point is, no they weren't. No one said anything about who the buyers were.
Baizuo only have one setting
Nothing like an angry mob of racist left wing Democrat thugs (and their propagandist allies in the news media) acting like KKK Democrat lynch mobs a century ago (except this time its a white police officer they're demanding be convicted of murder because a career criminal died of an overdose on fentanyl laced heroin and meth while resisting arrest for yet another crime he committed).
The goal of these protesters is NOT for justice to prevail, but rather to scare and intimidate the jury to convict/lynch the cop (just because he's white).
While there's no evidence Chauvin was/is racist, it is clear that BLM and anti police protesters (who falsely accuse white Americans, especially Republicans, of being racists) are not only racist, but are far left wing communists who hate America.
The lunatic protester interviewed in this article is not fit to teach children (or work around children).
LOL the idea there is no systemic racism in police departments is laughable. Why aren't you on a Q site?
You're the one making the assertion, Champ; go ahead and back it up. I'll say it: there isn't "systemic racism" in police departments.
Must be a Democratic environment thing. I can't think of a single racist police department in my Republican State. The very thought of it is laughable. I've concluded it must just be Democratic State's because I have no point of reference as I would never live in the h*llholes they call home.
Why would Democrats support stricter gun control laws if there was systemic racism in police departments?
What's your definition of systemic racism? I really have no idea what people mean when they say that. To me it means that there is racism inherent in the design or implementation of the system, and that means more than just seeing a disparate outcome. And I don't think that is the case now.
"I live in a suburb that is fairly privileged and affluent"
Well "color" me shocked.
And thankful, that my adult children are well beyond such notions of "education"
daddy, should we chain ourselves to a fence?
No dear, it's like Patton said:
"No poor dumb son of a bitch ever won a war by dying for his country. You win wars by making the other poor dumb son of a bitch die for HIS country."
Certainly not if it's near a probable riot / arson.
The research has been done that people tend to see black males as much older than they are. And treat them as such, even when they're just boys. Look at Tamir Rice.
"The problem with Tamir Rice's situation was that he wasn't old enough to be shot to death for holding a toy gun."
A privileged and affluent suburb on the planet Twitter.
When the folks outside don't like the verdict and torch the place is it an iNsuRRection?
Or do these rioters have the "correct" viewpoint?
Not and insurrection, it's urban renewal.
“No reasonable person would conclude that the statements were truly statements of fact,” argued lawyers for Sydney Powell. No reasonable person would believe there isn't systemic racism either.
I was at home and I was on social media when I first saw it
White women are the worst.
Hirt, of Korean extraction and wearing a Black Lives Matter face mask
Apparently, she is not a very good student of history.
Your church lies about it's history AND YOU BELIEVE THEM! you have no business lecturing anyone on history.
Shut the fuck up Mormon fascist!
Get help.
Apparently, she is not a very good student of history.
Pretty sure, at this point, that being oblivious to and not being constantly reminded of every attrocity tangentially related to your ethno-national heritage is a privilege. What could possibly be more 'white privilege' than saying "I wasn't here, I don't know anything about your suffering, so it shouldn't count against me."?
how can these naysayers—or dare I say white supremacists
This is the state of education in America. A high school teacher, not just allowed, but encouraged to label anyone that disagrees with her as evil. What a pathetic sack of shit.
Nancy is amazing. She just records all the words and lets the fools expose themselves. That is what differentiates her from all the asshole 'editors' at Reason who allow these avowed Marxists control of the narrative.

It's such an unusual experience, watching a journalist actually engage in journalism.
You would know evil Chuck. You belong to an evil church.
Shut the fuck up you America hating Mormon!
KAR, just let it go, man. We all know some freaky LDS woman pegged you with a strap on and made you her little bitch. Get over it and move on with your life.
X 1000
I think it was Warren Jeffs; there is a story about him taking a young boy out of his classroom and into the restroom for the purpose of pederasty. That can seriously f someone up for life.
Get over it and move on with your life.
Or at least find whatever the anti-Mormon version of Stormfront is and go there. "The Jews" jokes can be kinda funny and even pointed (in both directions) when used flippantly and judiciously, but using "The Mormons" constantly and in earnest is just stupid.
Seriously, I know people who won't stay at Marriott Hotels because of their ties to LDS. They still manage to effortlessly present themselves as something better, even in the presence of Mormons, than the rabid stupidity that KAR effaces.
They still manage to effortlessly present themselves as something better, even in the presence of Mormons, than the rabid stupidity that KAR effaces.
That's because it isn't real. It's one of the raging lefties who refuse to fuck off no matter how many times their stupidity is exposed.
KAR popped up shortly before the election within days of an argument where I thoroughly discredited SQLFKR and jeffy's blatant misrepresentation about the Reichstag fire and mocked their Trumptator fan-fiction.
Yet, KAR has expressed knowledge of stuff posted years ago. I was living in Portland when I started posting in the comments, he supposedly lives in Portland. He posts hate specifically about my church. He posts invective about Rommelmann, someone for whom I have expressed great fondness, without ever justifying it. He even expresses disdain for particular commenters who I have frequently interacted with who I have never seen interact with him.
He is the anti-me. His entire schtick is to make it unlikely that others will respond to my posts and alienate those who do. To believe it is a unique person, you have to disregard the odds of a flaming asshole who never expresses any libertarian thoughts and flings insults like a 12 year-old in a CoD lobby choosing to read and begin commenting at the online site for a libertarian magazine. Seeing as there are a whole group of passive aggressive fucktards that post regularly already, it seems highly improbable. Which one? Anybody's guess is as good as mine.
You are the most boring asshole troll ever. Fuck off, please.
followed by a century of lynching; 8,000 people in this country were lynched without trial, without accusation, sometimes with the police being involved
They murder more than 8,000 people in less than 10 years in the city of Chicago all by itself. The efforts of the communist Chinese government killed 80,000,000 in half a century.
What should anyone be more afraid of, white supremacists, gangbangers, or Marxists?
So, rather empirically; 4-5X as many blacks were executed without trial bringing The South to heel in the latter half of the Civil War than were lynched in the century prior.
I'm going to say that things that are likely to happen now are a much greater concern than the terrible injustices of the past.
So, we agree that 5,000,000 interred Uighurs today and the immanent subjection of Hong Kong to mainland China make Marxism the greater concern? Just making sure.
Well, Chinese authoritarianism, anyway. I don't think it's accurate to call it Marxist at this point. But yes, that is more worth worrying about than the history of lynching in the US.
I don’t think it’s accurate to call it Marxist
They certainly began that way, just like BLM, which is why it is still an appropriate descriptor. People need to understand why flirting with communism is so very dangerous.
Didn't mormons practice a "united order" that was basically a socialist commune?
If flirting with communism is dangerous you should ditch the LDS Church Chuck.
Your pervert god doesn't exist anyway.
Also BLM is simply people who think blacks should be treated equal. If some marxist copyrighted the name that doesn't mean shit.
Biden says that China isn't an enemy, it's a competitor. Makes you wonder in what areas does Biden want to compete with China? Surveillance of citizens? Social scoring? Reeducation camps?
All of the above?
Ahh violence in Chicago...
The fascist's red herring.
Shut the fuck up you mormon fascist
The typical ignorant and misinformed BLM childlike activist.
Followed proper channels for what exactly? She doesn't even know what she is protesting.
She's just trying to influence the emotions of the judge and jury. You know, like in 'to kill a mockingbird.'
racism and privilege...don't you get it...we are all racist oppressors.
Nothing says "justice for black folks" like a lynch mob.
You mean "turn about is fair play" isn't the essence of justice? You need to get with the times, man.
An eye for an eye...everybody blind...something, something....
Yet another activist who correctly identifies some problems, but totally misses on the causes and solutions to those problems. Until people are willing to talk about uncomfortable subjects like the state of black culture and the problems of black on black crime and fatherless families, nothing is going to change much. Racism is certainly a main reason why things are they way they are. But people seem to think that that means that racism is still the main problem. Which just doesn't seem to be the case. It's not a non-issue, but it isn't a significant reason behind the continued persistent racial disparities we see today as far as I can see.
Spot on. The (anti) social determinants of black culture are what chemists would refer to as the rate limiting step; that is, the step in the process which determines the ultimate outcome.
Have to disagree. Not saying racism does not exist. But it has been well documented that until LBJ was prez things like unwed mothers and rates of welfare were actually marginally better, but basically equal, for blacks and whites. Once the federal government started paying unwed females to have babies this changed. While I will not defend LBJ's position on racism I don't think the federal government's programs were suppose to be racist. Basically the dems started buying black votes by welfare rules that destroyed family units.
When the New Deal got Americans back to work, white Americans got the first pick at jobs, and when Black Americans did get jobs, they were given lower wages, according to the University of Houston's Digital History Project.
The FHA continued to encourage racist policies into the postwar era, when the American suburbs were being built. In 1948, the Supreme Court outlawed "restrictive covenants."
Many unions had explicit clauses in their constitutions that said that only whites could be members.
White veterans of World War II were given zero-down-payment, 30-year guaranteed mortgages under the GI Bill.
And all of that disproves the prior comment, exactly, how?
I don't think we disagree. When I say that racism is a cause of the persistent disparity, I mean that the past history of slavery and discrimination is the reason why there is a more or less permanent poor black underclass in the US. Welfare state made it be a worse situation for longer and created many new problems. But blacks have always been poorer in general and that is largely because of historical injustice, at least at its roots.
Identifying cold sores as a problem during an earthquake is not "correctly identifying a problem". It's ignoring one.
Yeah, my thought was that a stopped clock is right twice a day, but plenty of people would make a rather correct point, and the adage pretty much exists to say, that it's not correctly reporting/identifying the time even at those two points.
No, it's both.
They’ve been bombarded with grievance and victim politics for so long that many don’t see the point in working hard, or getting good grades.
And that’s 100% on liberals. They will rue the day that they are held to account for their pandering.
Pussy
I love these dispatches. Simply letting people tell their version in their own words can be powerful.
You can feel this woman's passion in her words.
You can also see her muddled thought processes. You can see how easily manipulated she is (voter suppression stopped them from being successful.... In minneapolis).
It is simple... It is a wonder that we do not allow this sort of reporting any more.
Same type of person who argues communism has never failed because it's never been tried.
The woman is completely psychotic and a danger to society.
There is no way to distinguish between her mental/emotional state and what one would see in demonic possession.
She is pure evil, and merely a subunit of the larger hivemind.
Atrocities worse than the world has ever seen are imminent.
The big, and scary, difference between this and demonic possession is that this is real.
Exactly
And possession can auspiciously be purged with a simple exorcism. It's not clear that there's any limit to number of 'Our Fathers' that would need to be chanted or virgins we'd have to sacrifice to exercise this woman's demons.
Her comments have been edited for length and clarity.
Even with your editing, at no point did Hirt even inadvertently utter anything that could be charitably said to possess clarity.
Well, imagine what they must have been like before the editing.
"Racism" is the red herring that politicians use to distract stupid people from holding them accountable. No one thinks of themselves as racist. So when you blame racism, you absolve yourself and everyone listening from culpability.
"It wasn't the fact that I voted for LEOBRs and Prohibition and public sector unions that allows cops to assault and murder people with impunity... It was 'racism'! But look - I tweeted about how Trump is bad! Re-elect me forever!"
Me Korean
Me play joke
We follow proper channels
With accent I spoke
What are you asking these 'proper channels' to do? Is it too much to ask for one serious proposal that will save black lives? No, disbanding the police doesn't count, not when 'defunding' correlates with an increase in black homicide victims far greater than the problem you are trying to solve. And don't give me "reimagining public safety" without the details to explain how it would simultaneously be effective in preventing blacks from becoming victims of crime and reduce government shootings of blacks.
The best thing that has come out of BLM are body cameras. They have resulted in massive reductions in use of force and improved accountability. Funny thing is that I don't remember BLM actually pushing too hard for them, but that is what they got out of their protests in 2016, and I strongly approve of their deployment. What is the next body cameras? BLM has plenty of time to ideate while chained to a fence.
"What is the next body cameras?"
Mass murder
Is that a pun on "body"? Or is there something that I am missing?
It's what's next
Actually the cameras came from project zero. Which was solely focused on police abuse and worked with police forces to bring accountability. They didn't shout Marxist crap so the media stopped covering them. They may have changed, as I haven't looked them up in over a year
Thank you for giving me the history. Not too surprising that the organization that doesn't see everything through a racial lens is the one that has actually accomplished any good.
Yeah, I was going to say that it was incorrect to assert that bodycams came about because of BLM. I'd say between Apple and Project Zero, and good old fiscal conservatism (getting the policing that you pay for) BLM had precisely zero influence on the implementation of bodycams.
The only problem black people have is black behavior. We cannot change that for them and I see no evidence they are going to change it themselves.
Look one comment below you. You’re not supposed to exist.
I wish you didn't exist.
Institutional racism not existing is not the same thing as racists not existing.
All of these leftists can't seem to comment on current issues without dredging up slavery and Jim Crow.
They seem to gloss over the impressive gains made in the 1960's.
Institutional racism doesn't exist any more.
Institutional racism still exists. It exists on top of cultural and social problems in many majority-black urban neighborhoods, but it still exists. Getting pulled over for 'driving while black' still exists. Getting your resume passed-over for having a black-sounding name still exists. Having your child disciplined at school in a more severe manner than a white child would for the same behavior still exists.
Bullshit. Those things happen to lower class people of every race every fucking day. I grew up in a very white region and still saw drivers and job-seekers and kids get treated that way.
Entrenched authoritarians are the problem. Governments obtain much more money by taking it from poor people who can't afford to fight them then they could ever get from rich people who can. Bodie Dwayne McCoy's resume gets passed over as often as Taniqua LaShonda Jones. Administrators single out kids they know they can get away with tormenting, because they like tormenting kids, its why they take the job.
Fucking get over it already.
Eat a dick fascist!
And no one gives a shit if you mock and degrade poor white people for being poor and white.
The only real institutional racism consists in the horrific mis-education foisted upon inner city youth that renders them incapable of rational thought and bereft of any marketable skill. They are then priced out of the market by minimum wage laws and left on the streets where hopelessness festers into blind rage bringing out the absolute worst qualities humans possess.
The strongest rise above this, leave these neighborhoods and go on to prosper. Then, they are told to "give back to their communities". Give back what? The beatings and abuse they suffered at the hands of these "communities"? For surviving this, they should be celebrated as heroes but the Woke allow no heroic act to go unpunished especially one that undercuts the "narrative" of helplessness created by evil white nationalists.
No, 2 of those 3 things dont exist
And even if they do exist, arguably all 3 aren't institutional racism.
"Black-sounding name" isn't even well-defined enough to constitute racism. If I hire a black person named "Washington", "Freeman", or "Jackson" over a white person named "Romijn", "LaBeouf", or "Tatum", even if I do it as institutional policy, is it anti-black/racist? Let alone if I hire a black man named "Ali" or "Al Jabar" over someone named "Clay" or "Alsindo" even if they're the same person?
First, that list of 450 people who were killed by the police in Minnesota since 1984 includes all kinds of deaths, from accidental to intentional, but Kaia has no regard for whether the police killings were legal or not. For example, "Yee Vang, 20, was killed in a “complex incident” after hijacking a car and exchanging
gunfire with St. Paul police." Was that legitimate police action, or just an act of "white supremacy"? These activists demonstrate an incredible level of ignorance, not only of politics but also history -- they seem to forget little acts like the Civil War that ended slavery, and numerous laws that ended Jim Crow and brought forth civil and voting rights. It sounds like Kaia and her friends need to hold onto grievances, and want blanket immunity for POC, regardless of whether they are suspected of crimes, have resisted arrest, or are shooting at police. To talk about voter suppression in Minnesota is ludicrous, as is the idea that the activists in MN are peaceful. There are miles of rubble that say otherwise. Chauvin is on trial -- that's justice. If a jury of 12 non-powerful people, his peers, bring a verdict, that's justice, no matter what the verdict is -- the process is what's just. If the activists refuse to accept the legitimate verdict, and start tearing up the city again, that's vengeance, not justice.
Anti-White thugs attack White people that peacefully protest against the genocidal policy of mass third-world immigration and FORCED assimilation for EVERY White country and ONLY White countries. If anti-White ideas are so good, why do they require street violence to make sure nobody will object? It’s obvious that Antifa really only wants White Genocide.
Fuck off, Tony.
anybody actually ever hang out with any of these blm people, or is it just some abstract fight against some tv manufactured injustice, cause these negros will f-ing kill you bro. turn off jew-tv. it's designed to rot your brain
The author of this article seems to have.
No one criticizes com.ents like this but when I call mormons out for their bs it's "that's bigoted!"
People don't choose to be black or gay. They can choose what church they go to.
It's nice knowing all the Mormon loving, bigoted fascists on here despise me.
We don't give you shit for your comments because they are bigoted, but because you are batshit crazy. At least that is what I consider obsessing over one commentator on here and bringing up the fact that he/she is Mormon (no matter how crazy you, and I, think Mormonism is) every chance you get even if the topic at hand has nothing even tangentially to do with Mormonism.
KARen is among the lowest IQ posters here, but hey, he tries.
I would say those naysayers are absolutely ridiculous and do not understand white supremacist history.
Oof. Definitely the caricature of a tenth grade school teacher in affluent suburbia.
do not understand white supremacist history.
Neither does she. White supremacist history is sad and pathetic. Miserable people projecting their misery onto others. Read Randy Weaver's story. The amazing part is that he has any will to go on living.
My dad got drug to Klan meetings by his grandfather as a kid and yet in his early 20s managed to make a black best friend who hiked for miles in enemy territory to save his life. Ignorance is easily overcome, but these fuckheads are committed to heaping on more ignorance in support of their political agenda.
What the govt did to Weaver's family was wrong. He is still a shitty guy.
Of course your family was in the klan. Your church didn't allow blacks for most it's history.
You're a racist, homophobic piece of goddamn shit Chuck.
In this WAPO article, a minister exhorts his congregation to burn Minneapolis down.
Would that be considered incitement to insurrection, or is that only for White Republicans?

State witnesses fell apart yesterday so the NYT is making sure the jury stays in line.
Tony Soprano was more subtle than this.
The New York Times is doxxing jurors now. https://t.co/b5jVAs0Fkb
That's pretty fucked up. They didn't choose to be on the jury, the only outcome they can arrive at that isn't arranged by the state would be a nullification, and the odds that any pre-conceived outcome that they do arrive at aligns with the desires of every potential angry mob is precisely zero.
She said, while judging every person of a specific race.
When one bar-bouncer is killed at the hands of his co-worker [another bar-bouncer] it is crazy the protests that can appear.
We should not forget that these two men were co-workers.
They knew each other and worked at the same place.
It's crazy how the conspiracy theory that George Floyd was killed because he was black - a claim without evidence - is allowed to run rampant unchallenged.
Perhaps it would be well for Ms. Hirt to study a bit of African history. She might find a slightly different view of exactly how slavery evolved in Africa, and how in many cases the Europeans got their slaves. And what happened there when the slave trade ended. She might also learn that the MLK phrase she quotes was not as simple as she suggests. King's view was far more nuanced, and did not condone rioting, it simply placed it in context. While Jim Crow was repugnant today, not expecting something like it shows a complete inability to understand human nature. The healing from the Civil War, and the vast societal changes that emanated from it, were going to take generations to rectify, and to be accepted. It is a process that sadly is still going on, but is not unexpected. There were no magic beans then or now to change the nature of the human being. Some of what happened in the the early years of this country was nothing to be proud of. Much was. But the United States has grown up, and as any child, has learned from its mistakes and tries to correct them. It does not happen overnight, and I do not expect it to happen in my lifetime. But I hope and pray it continues to get better. Violence and rioting do NOT contribute to that outcome.
When did Reason decide to emulate the Washington Post?
Dispatch from far right cuntville.
I hope Antifa smashes your lying cunt head in Nancy.
Stay out of Portland cunt!
Dude, fuck off. You’re a demented asshole. No one cares.
If you don't like me you're probably a Mormon, mormon lover, a fascist, or a traitor.
No matter what you fucking suck
You really think only those four categories of people could think you're a demented asshole? Which one does Nancy belong to? She's easily one of the best contributors to this site. Go take your meds and get the help you need.
Lived in south Minneapolis and then downtown for 35 years. Those cops have been out of control since I've had the misfortune to first deal with them in 1986.
Businesses, city pols, and the mainstream press are completely with the cops.
No such thing as a good MPD cop.
Ms. Hirt - is that you?
An english teacher..well that explains the rantings of a crazy person. Marxist theory left economic departments a long time ago to reside in english and education departments. For the record...does this lunatic think every European who came to American is a racist? If America is so racist why are there so many "people of color" wanting to come in..again why so many coming in? Lynching..does this moron know the largest lynching in America was to...wait for it...Italian Americans (the folks the lefties despise as evidenced in Hollywood and the Media). And look at the stats...unarmed blacks and whites killed by police fall into same % of the general population...you see unequal results and I see cultural differences....why are there so many Irish cops...why so many Jews in the media/hollywood.....unequal results does not mean discrmination. I honestly can't believe how stupid this women is...
I'm waiting for Kaepernick to demand racial 'equity' in the NFL and Curry to do the same in the NBA.
Then we'll know they're serious.
What do you mean by "racial equity in the NFL/NBA?"
The Santa Clara Niners have shitty fans.
If this gal is a teacher from another city, how come she's not teaching?
I was wondering when someone was going to point that out.
I understood everything this collectivist said. Because she is an anti-individualist, and since individuals are human, I won't be listening to this anti-humanist anymore.
Having said that:
"The whole good cop/bad cop question can be disposed of much more decisively. We need not enumerate what proportion of cops appears to be good or listen to someone's anecdote about his Uncle Charlie, an allegedly good cop. We need only consider the following: (1) a cop's job is to enforce the laws, all of them; (2) many of the laws are manifestly unjust, and some are even cruel and wicked; (3) therefore every cop has agreed to act as an enforcer for laws that are manifestly unjust or even cruel and wicked. There are no good cops." ~Robert Higgs
Are you familiar with the term "syllogism"? If not, you should educate yourself.
Robert Higgs is full of shit.
"..but for these 450 people who have lost their lives to police homicide..."
OK, now I (at least) have to ask for some cites here.
Not a doubt that cops kill people who should not be killed by the cops, but that "450" number sounds like the "20% of American children are hungry!": a number pulled out of the ass of the person making the claim.
Did I miss it in the article?
She sounded like one of those who rioted at the Capitol....
"... justice for those police homicides." What does that mean? What is "justice?" Is Chauvin receiving justice? If Chauvin is acquitted, is that justice?
Was there a law against officers pinning a person who is *resisting* arrest to the ground with one's knee? How is law enforcement "suppose" to deal with defiant people? That question answers your question. If the officer broke a law or not.
Frankly, My perspective is; In a civilized society 'justice' shouldn't be determined by picking street fights with law officers but instead is served by the courts. I guess the case & evidence is actually where it's suppose to be now as long as the law if followed is a whole different question.

Juries act on emotion as much as anything. The videos and witnesses they have called so far are going a long way to getting sympathy for George Floyd.
If the strongest case for the defense is to attack him as a criminal hopeless worthless junkie my money is on the prosecution.
I'd say the strongest case for the defense is lack of ability to show any intent. Remember those day's when hard-crimes where charged by intent instead of witch-hunting any accidents that occur?
One of the charges is second degree unintentional murder.
