NIMBY Group Asks Residents To Donate Poop
A Philadelphia activist wants some stool samples, so he can prove a link between "irresponsible development" and colorectal cancer.

A neighborhood group in Philadelphia is asking opponents of a proposed apartment building to mail in poop samples as part of a study on how gentrification impacts cancer rates.
"We understand you may be concerned about the development of 48th Street and Chester Ave," reads a letter signed by West Philly United Neighbors President Ang Sun, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer, referencing a proposed 83-unit development slated for vacant land that was once a dog park.
"To fight gentrification, we are collaborating with biomedical researchers to investigate if development would adversely affect neighbors' microbiota and increase risk of developing colorectal cancer," the letter continues. "For research purposes, could you please donate your fecal sample (fingernail size)?"
Another flyer put out by the group, and posted to Twitter, fleshes out the link between cancer and gentrification by saying that deadly carcinogens could be released by "irresponsible demolition, excavation, and construction."
"Donate Your Fecal/Stool Sample to Help Fight Gentrification & Irresponsible Development In West Philly" reads the title of that particular emoji-covered flier.

The study for which the poop samples would be collected is one proposed by Sun himself, who also works as a cancer researcher at Temple University. A spokesperson for the university told the Inquirer that Sun's research required Institutional Review Board approval given that it involved human subjects—a process that it had yet to undergo.
Sun told the paper that he couldn't comment on his research until it was approved by his employer.
The story of Sun's request for poop samples initially broke on Reddit and Twitter, where people noted the absurdity of the ask, and the potential for violation of ethics guidelines governing scientific research.
While Sun's stool solicitation is unusual, cancer concerns being used to slow down development are not. Frequently, "not in my backyard" (NIMBY) activists in California will argue in environmental lawsuits that the cancer-causing effects of new condos or commercial developments need to be studied further before a particular project can proceed.
Whatever the merits of Sun's proposed study, its merger with his anti-development activism certainly calls into question whether he's truly motivated by the pursuit of scientific truth.
One wonders if his flier got any other local NIMBYs to stop flinging poo at the idea of new development long enough to send some toward Sun.

What a shitty idea.
A Philadelphia activist wants some stool samples, so he can prove a link between "irresponsible development" and colorectal cancer.................MORE DETAIL.
Can we donate larger quantities at higher speeds to him? Informally, even?

I'm not watching that. 😉

Hmmm. At $15 per hour you worked 1225 hours last month. Uhm - no thanks.
This guy just wants you to give a shit.
I gave a shit to water & sewer.
Is Mayor Pete testing the samples too?
Was I the only one who misread that as "tasting the samples..."?
That's Sqrlsy's job.
The huge medical research industry in and around Philadelphia is always putting out cattle calls for paid research subjects to participate in this or that study.
Sounds like this Ang guy couldn't get funding for his study from Temple so he came up with a pretty creative way to collect samples from his neighbors.
This perfectly encapsulates Philly and Mayor McDrunky.....They're all shitheads.
Just a few blocks away residents are contributing poop samples freely every day. They can be found on stoops and under bushes.
Thinking about it, they will probably be willing to provide samples for cash.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Have any of you seen ChemJeff, Tony, et. al. get their asses handed to them over ad hominem fallacies, etc., recently, and persist in the same fallacies anyway--even after they were called out on them? White Knight has recently failed the same way on composition fallacies, etc.
I've been wrong on the facts before. I've been wrong on the structure before. I'll be wrong on the facts again, and I'll be wrong on the logical structure again. None of us is perfect, but most of us here, in comments, anyway, are perfectly capable of understanding why a cum hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy should be avoided--especially after someone has linked to the fallacy and explained it to us.
Most of the progressives I meet online seem to be incapable of understanding things like why correlation doesn't equal causation--not even after you link to the fallacy and explain it to them. And being irrational and wrong doesn't seem to dissuade them! Yeah, even IF IF IF colorectal cancer rates were positively correlated with gentrification, that wouldn't mean the relationship was anything but circumstantial.
Moreover, it wouldn't mean that gentrification wasn't desirable despite increases in colorectal cancer--even IF IF IF the relationship between them were causal. I'd like to do an experiment in which progressives who regurgitate the progressive shit they read elsewhere take tests to see if they have basic critical thinking skills.
No, I'm not saying that being progressive necessarily makes them stupid, but even if we're not talking bout causation, the number of progressives online and the number of people who lack critical thinking skills seem to be positively correlated.
"Have any of you seen ChemJeff, Tony, et. al. get their asses handed to them over ad hominem fallacies, etc., recently, and persist in the same fallacies anyway–even after they were called out on them?"
First off, they don't care; deflect, pivot, change the subject, be totally off topic, for trolls there are no rules or need for consistency or even coherence. Secondly, notions of "logic," in their view, just don't apply. Instead they are just the worst notions of Western hegemony and patriarchy, homophobia, racism, and misogyny etc etc.
And for others, they are just plain crazy. I've tried to have discussions with the likes of Tony, who cannot get one step beyond having not been accepted growing up, in his words, as a "flaming homosexual in the Bible belt" and honestly believes money just comes from the government and isn't distributed fairly. They are an utter and complete waste of time. As with Einstein's definition of insanity; they come here doing the same old harangue over and over and over and somehow expecting something different to come of it.
They believe the shit they do because they lack critical thinking skills, and we're making a mistake when we try to persuade them--like using power point presentations with the blind.
We cite facts to people who genuinely don't understand why facts matter, and getting how stupid they are across really is important--in a rational way.
I'm probably giving them the benefit of the doubt in assuming they're capable of understanding why facts matter, but if that's being too generous, getting them to be embarrassed by their own stupidity is probably the next best thing.
>>we’re making a mistake when we try to persuade them
people other than the trolls read the comments ...
Yes!
That's why I stopped my half of Einstein's definition of insanity by engaging with them. Occasionally I'll mock, but there's no point in trying to get the pig to sing.
Or like wrestling with a pig; you just get dirty, and the pig likes it.
If you feel compelled to right factual errors, then perhaps that does help other readers who might otherwise be lead astray; but beyond that you will never get anywhere with a dedicated troll or perverse fool. Might as well go find yourself a falling down drunk to argue with.
You make a good point, but I don't have the time (or patience) to continually correct the stream of bullshit.
One of my biggest bitches about gentrification and progressives is for years they claimed White Flight was racist and did damage to black communities, then when whites started returning to cities then that became racist and does harm to black communities.
In Los Angeles, it was ridiculous.
Downtown Los Angeles was among the most neglected major downtown areas in the country--with a thriving periphery. Just before the mortgage crisis, developers were literally converting the flop houses on skid row into luxury lofts, which should have been a dream come true. Instead, they started putting moratoriums on them--trying to preserve the flop houses of skid row?!
"This 50-block neighborhood is home to the largest concentration of homeless people in the United States."
https://www.altaonline.com/dispatches/a4574/l-a-s-skid-row-life-goes-on/
Now skid row has pretty much inundated all of downtown. I guess this is paradise?
cum hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy should be avoided
I've heard of post hoc, egro propter hoc, but not cum hoc ergo propter hoc. Does cum hoc involve chicks who won't swallow?
Cum hawk is when free-range chickens forget to look up.
White Knight has recently failed the same way on composition fallacies, etc.
Not to mention failing on the chemical formula for water.
onion?
It's hard to tell; something about a Poe Horizon.
Poe's Schwarzchild Radius.
Maybe opponents of NIMBY's should all volunteer them a sample...pre-emptively.
I don't know why the guy needs stool samples to see if there's a link between gentrification and colorectal cancer, he already knows the answer. And if Temple University stands by his "research", Temple University needs to be crossed off the list of serious universities.
I assumed sqrlsy would be in here lapping this article up.
He's busy booking a flight to Philly.
Good thing we got a lot of stuff built before now. Otherwise we'd still be living in caves and huts and hunting/gathering. No, scratch the hunting part. Animal rights and all...
Bugs. They’ll let us eat bugs.
The request for stool sample is all part of the act, folks, all part of the act. But it got your attention for a bit, didn't it?
The 50 Cent Army types in China, apparently, don't need the money to get them to go online and combat "misinformation" as the CCP sees it. It's more like the recent social media led take down of a major retailer in China--by Chinese "Twitter mobs"--who were offended that this retailer announced that they wouldn't source any raw materials from Xinjiang. You don't have to pay these crusaders to be stupid online in their spare time. They do it because they care.
I'm not saying they definitely aren't paid, but I'm not sure it's necessary.
The Moonies didn't used to pay the people hassling you for change at the airport either.
