During the summer of 2018, a Facebook post by a black Smith College student named Oumou Kanoute went viral. Kanoute recounted being harassed by a college janitor and police officer who had accused her of trespassing while eating inside a dormitory lounge. The incident left her shaken and frightened—in Kanoute's telling, she was persecuted for the crime of "eating while black."

The Washington Post and The New York Times both covered her story, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) came to her assistance. As a result of the attention brought to the situation, many of the employees involved—particularly the janitor and a cafeteria worker who had spoken with Kanoute—were publicly branded racists and subjected to extreme opprobrium. Kanoute eventually received a formal apology from Smith College's president, Kathleen McCartney.

"This painful incident reminds us of the ongoing legacy of racism and bias in which people of color are targeted while simply going about the business of their ordinary lives," said McCartney in a public statement.

Yesterday, the Times revisited the story, adding some key details. It turns out that Kanoute was trespassing: The dormitory in which she ate lunch was closed to students for the summer. Only children attending a summer camp were allowed to use the building's cafeteria. The janitor who approached Kanoute—a nearsighted man in his 60s—had every reason to call security, and the officer who showed up apologized for bothering the student. Contrary to Kanoute's claim that she thought her life might be in danger, the officer was quite unarmed.

According to the Times, Smith commissioned a report on the incident, and that report

cleared Ms. Blair altogether and found no sufficient evidence of discrimination by anyone else involved, including the janitor who called campus police.

Still, Ms. McCartney said the report validated Ms. Kanoute's lived experience, notably the fear she felt at the sight of the police officer. "I suspect many of you will conclude, as did I," she wrote, "it is impossible to rule out the potential role of implicit racial bias."

The report said Ms. Kanoute could not point to anything that supported the claim she made on Facebook of a yearlong "pattern of discrimination."

Ms. McCartney offered no public apology to the employees after the report was released. "We were gobsmacked — four people's lives wrecked, two were employees of more than 35 years and no apology," said Tracey Putnam Culver, a Smith graduate who recently retired from the college's facilities management department. "How do you rationalize that?"

Rahsaan Hall, racial justice director for the A.C.L.U. of Massachusetts and Ms. Kanoute's lawyer, cautioned against drawing too much from the investigative report, as subconscious bias is difficult to prove. Nor was he particularly sympathetic to the accused workers.

"It's troubling that people are more offended by being called racist than by the actual racism in our society," he said. "Allegations of being racist, even getting direct mailers in their mailbox, is not on par with the consequences of actual racism."

The revelation that the entire narrative surrounding the incident was a lie has not changed matters one bit at Smith. Employees must now undergo rigorous anti-bias training. Faculty are exempt from these sessions, but they are encouraged to attend "white accountability" Zoom groups, in which they are supposed to interrogate their prejudices.

The Times story is worth reading in full, because it's a welcome instance of the mainstream media giving much-needed attention to the phenomenon of ostensibly progressive (though considerably privileged) college students weaponizing false claims of racism or sexism to punish ordinary, innocent people who irked them. It's a tactic that is spreading from elite college campuses to elite media institutions—like the Times itself—which disproportionately hire graduates of places like Smith. And it's spreading still. As Andrew Sullivan once observed, "We all live on campus now."

Amazon is no longer carrying When Harry Became Sally, a socially conservative take on transgenderism by Ryan Anderson, president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Amazon has not offered an explanation, but appears to have recently crafted a policy against "content that we determine is hate speech," according to The Washington Free Beacon.

As a private bookseller, Amazon is not required to stock its virtual shelves with any particular tome. But refusing to sell Anderson's book will prompt understandable charges of rank hypocrisy. Prime users can currently order Mein Kampf and have it delivered in 48 hours.

The White House is still backing former Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget, but Senate Democrats are postponing committee votes on her nomination. According to Reuters:

Biden, a Democrat, still supports Tanden, an Indian American who would be the first woman of color to lead the agency.

"Neera Tanden is a leading policy expert who brings critical qualifications to the table during this time of unprecedented crisis," his press secretary, Jen Psaki, wrote on Twitter.

Asked later at the White House whether Tanden had offered to withdraw her nomination, Psaki said: "That's not the stage we're in."

And if the power goes out during the winter, no cooking, no boiling water, no NG generators. We can all just die.

The battle over climate change is boiling over on the home front
Municipalities want new buildings to go all electric, spurning gas-fired stoves and heating systems. The gas industry disagrees.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2021/02/23/climate-change-natural-gas/

Cities and towns across the country are rewriting local building codes so that new homes and offices would be blocked from using natural gas, a fossil fuel that when burned emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. New laws would force builders to install heat pumps instead of gas furnaces and electric kitchen stoves instead of gas burners.

    1. Ra's al Gore   4 years ago

The rich can do whatever they want. Fuck the peons. Free minds and free markets.

Bill ["Shit Water"] Gates Defends Using Private Jets While Warning about Dangers of Climate Change
      https://www.newsweek.com/bill-gates-defends-using-private-jets-big-homes-climate-change-carbon-emissions-1571005

Gates elaborated: "I am offsetting my carbon emissions by buying clean aviation fuel and funding carbon capture and funding low cost housing projects to use electricity instead of natural gas and so I have been able to eliminate it and it was amazing to me how expensive that was, that cost to be green... we've got to drive that down."

He continued: "I felt like, if we have this idealistic generation and this wonderful goal, we need a plan, and that my experience could help contribute to that plan."

In January this year, The Guardian reported Cascade Investment, a fund that oversees Gates' wealth, was in a "£3bn bidding war" ($4.2bn) after teaming up with private equity firm Blackstone to buy private jet services company British firm Signature Aviation.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

        buying clean aviation fuel

Is that like "clean coal"? Who the fuck does this asshole think he's kidding?

“I felt like, if we have this idealistic generation and this wonderful goal, we need a plan, and that my experience could help contribute to that plan.”

        "Really spectacular. Spared no expense."

        1. Moonrocks   4 years ago

He absolutely must fly in his own private jet to exotic holiday destinations all over the world so that idealistic generations can benefit from his experience in planning and management. It's not like we have the technology to communicate instantly and effectively over long distances.

You know, I'm starting to think that Bill Gates is just as sociopathic as Steve Jobs was.

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

He's actually worse because Jobs only directed his God complex towards Apple (although there's an argument to be made that internet culture went to shit shortly after smartphones became widely available), whereas Gates is trying to apply it to the entire planet.

          2. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Gary Kildall's opinion would be interesting, on that subject. You'll need a Ouija board.

I'd have more respect for Gates if he started using quotes from the Brezhnev-era Politburo about they needed their perks to better guide the Proletariat.

        3. Unable2Reason   4 years ago

I laugh out my ass every time I hear 'carbon sequestration'. Fossil fuels ARE sequestered carbon!

          1. Zeb   4 years ago

Yeah, that's the point. The idea is to re-sequester them. Whether or not that is worthwhile, I don't know.

            1. Unable2Reason   4 years ago

The point is if you don't want them to be non-sequestered, then leave them sequestered.

              1. Zeb   4 years ago

What if you want to use the fuel and then re-sequester it? There are many things that can be conceived of. Like I said, I don't know if it makes any practical sense, but it's not a nonsense proposition.

        4. D-Pizzle   4 years ago

If we were to truly eliminate all fossil fuel use, we would have to do away with commercial and most other aviation. Without a massive technological leap, there is simply no way to have commercial aviation without fossil fuel. Fossil Fuels are the only source of energy with a high enough energy to weight (and volume) ratio to keep all but the lightest planes in the air.

          1. Tyval Dayall   4 years ago

Since firewood is carbon neutral, someone just needs to invent a plane that runs on wood.

            1. Ron   4 years ago

that describes Venezuela very, well next USA

            2. NoVaNick   4 years ago

No. You won’t be allowed to burn anything because it causes air pollution that can harm vulnerable black and brown communities. I ain’t making this up-it’s actually one of the main reasons these progtopias are trying to ban gas appliances. Funny thing is these vulnerable peoples are not going to be able to afford their electric bills, and so will probably end up illegally burning stuff to keep warm, which of course will result in violent police intervention

    3. NoVaNick   4 years ago

The econazi insanity has finally crossed over into legislation, aided by progtard Karens on town/city councils. And when you can’t have heat because of the blackouts, they will be nice and toasty in front of their fireplaces with their generators humming along.

    4. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

The problem is that those appliances still need electricity to get started; they just use gas as the operating fuel.

If you want to be prepared, get a generator (Harbor Freight sells a 9000 watt model for $750 dollars, or 3500 watt inverter generators for $850, and they often have sales), or make sure that the next house you buy has a wood-burning fireplace and keep a stock of firewood on hand for emergencies.

      1. Moonrocks   4 years ago

They don't need electricity to start, it's just that electric starters are more convenient. Especially gas stoves are really easy to start manually.

Of course, we could also reduce the need to even discuss this, but the aristocracy seems hell bent on making power outages common and routine for the peasants.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

Yeah, I forgot about the manual lighting for things like stoves. But trying to manually light a furnace that has an electronic igniter can be a recipe for disaster.

          1. NoVaNick   4 years ago

You can’t manually light new gas hot water heaters either, as I found out recently. They have a battery electronic ignition and once that runs out, you to replace the whole gas control panel, or just buy a new hot water heater for a few hundred bucks more.

            1. damiksec   4 years ago

              "hot water heater"

Why do you need to heat hot water?

              1. Zeb   4 years ago

Because that's how you make hot water.

                1. damiksec   4 years ago

No, technically its how you heat COLD water, not make it.

                  .

                  1. Zeb   4 years ago

You have to continue heating the hot water or it gets cold again.

                    1.  damiksec   4 years ago

It would have to have cooled to require reheating.

You lost. And you know it and hate it.

              2. D-Pizzle   4 years ago

"Hot water maker" would be more apt. Of course, then some a-hole would come along and complain that it doesn't actually make the water.

                1. damiksec   4 years ago

As oopposed to the aholes who claim its how you heat water that's already hot.

The ones that baffled me, were the people who had spoiled food from their refrigerator's power going out. While it was 11 to 24 outside. I mean, WTF? We left our fridge shut, and stuck drinks and whatever outside. Worked great.

    5. Unicorn Abattoir   4 years ago

It's idiocy. I have a Generac backup, and I've found it to be a great investment. If nothing else, they also have generators that run on propane.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

If you're a homeowner, you really have no substantive excuse to not buy one. I find the complaints that "I just don't use it enough to justify the maintenance!" to ring rather hollow.

        1. Unicorn Abattoir   4 years ago

They are expensive to install (I have a whole house unit, it ran me a little under $10K total). But even a standby gas generator to keep the refrigerator running is something.

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

I'm actually pretty impressed that the people who ended up buying those Ford hybrid trucks were able to use it as a rolling generator.

Probably not much of a bargain at $60K, but at least these people know it has the capability.

            1. MK Ultra   4 years ago

I don't know whether it came from Ford or just local dealerships, but someone was sending the for sale trucks out to folks without power.

Now that's how to do tragedy-based marketing well.

My backup generator goes online nest week. No more power outages for me, at least in theory. My across-the-street neighbor owns one of the largest electrical contracting firms in the state, and his generator did not kick in during our last power outage. Not a good look.

After wielding fabricated evidence at the recent Senate impeachment trial, Democrats plan to call a conspiracy-obsessed MSNBC Russia-hoaxer who once encouraged ISIS to bomb a Trump Tower to testify in Wednesday’s hearing on “domestic terrorism.”

Malcolm Nance, a left-wing Navy veteran accused of exaggerating his military accomplishments while in the service, will join lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee to discuss the Capitol riots in early January.

“This is my nominee for first ISIS suicide bombing of a Trump property,” Nance wrote in 2017 in a since-deleted tweet with a picture of Trump Tower Istanbul, building credibility among Democrats to offer congressional testimony on domestic terrorism.

Why Do the Election’s Defenders Require My Agreement?
The purpose of voting today is to give a democratic veneer to an undemocratic regime—not to give the people a say in the direction of their government.
    https://amgreatness.com/2021/02/23/why-do-the-elections-defenders-require-my-agreement/

Yet if, as it seemed to me, it’s so important to Sullivan that I personally believe that everything that happened was on the up-and-up, he might try using his platform to call for, and get, serious local, state, and federal investigations of all of the above anomalies and others not mentioned. Those investigations would then have to be reported fairly and credibly by a media that actually wants to disseminate the truth and not cover for state and local corruption or for the Biden Administration.

...Sullivan repeatedly demanded that I explain how Our Democracy™ can survive as a democracy if something like half the country doesn’t believe in it anymore. The question was rhetorical. Sullivan knows the answer: it can’t. His purpose in asking was to shift blame from those who rig everything, refuse to explain anything but instead gaslight, gaslight, gaslight, onto those who, in response, decline to believe.

    1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

" His purpose in asking was to shift blame from those who rig everything, refuse to explain anything but instead gaslight, gaslight, gaslight, onto those who, in response, decline to believe."

This is Sullum's modus operandi too.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

A democratic (or, even republican) society can't be sustained by undemocratic institutions. The implicit agreement within those frameworks is that election winners won't steamroll their agenda, irrespective of the consequences. But as we've seen in recent years, the obsession over "political mandates" indicates that this is what the elites are demanding.

So it's not a question of whether Our Democracy™ can survive; it's already dead, with the oligarchs cynically exploiting mob rule organized by the left-liberal upper middle class as leverage to enforce compliance.

    3. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

Because what the election skeptics are really asking for is NOT an investigation to reveal the extent of a crime, but instead, an *Investigation In Search Of A Crime*. They won't be satisfied until their "crime" is discovered, and when eternal investigations don't find anything, they will just shift the goalposts some more and find some other nonfalsifiable hypothesis that they insist must be responsible for the MASSIVE FRAUD and only more eternal investigations will discover "The Truth". Why should any rational person indulge lunatic conspiracy theories?

Elections in this country are decentralized, so if you have a *specific* instance of *actual* voter fraud that occurred in your area, then go ahead and do something about it. I am all for that.
But demanding endless audits and investigations and inquiries in search of MASSIVE FRAUD that you have no proof of, but you "just know" is lurking right beneath the surface, is a waste of time for everyone.

to be left alone. Not an investigation you gaslighting little cunt

Read the fucking article you fucking idiot clown.

Let me begin by repeating something I said to Sullivan: I do not actively disbelieve in the outcome of the 2020 election. I do not assert that the election was stolen. I also do not believe the election was totally fair, “belief” being an affirmative mental state. I say only that I don’t know; I haven’t been convinced either way. One side tried to convince me and failed (at least so far). The other side has made no such attempt but instead mostly shouts in my face that I must believe. The latter effort, in addition to being aggravating and insulting, has been less effective.

Your pathetic fifty cent ass has your talking points and blame games ready to go EVEN WHEN THEY DON'T APPLY.

Which goes back to the year-long campaign by Trump and his allies to sow seeds of doubt about mail-in voting.

They never got into details such as distinguishing between states where voters had to request and fill out an application vs. states where applications were sent out to everyone vs. the few states where ballots were sent out. If they were to talk about details of mail-in voting policy and implementation, then it would have led to Trump and his cronies being asked, "Well, what are you doing to help insure that mail-in voting goes smoothly?" He had no interest in making sure it ran smoothly.

        1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

"Which goes back to the year-long campaign by Trump and his allies to sow seeds of doubt about mail-in voting"

No shit. It was obvious a year ago that the unsecured mail-in ballots were an integral part of a campaign of massive electoral fraud.

But here you are, pretending that voicing concerns and serious doubts about their integrity somehow led to a lack of ballot integrity.
How credulous and stupid do you imagine people are? That argument wouldn't fool a baby.

          1. The White Knight II: The White Knight Rises!   4 years ago

            "voicing concerns and serious doubts"

Let's look at some of these "serious" tweets from Trump (https://www.thetrumparchive.com/):

"Mail in ballots substantially increases the risk of crime and VOTER FRAUD!" -- The all-caps really made the message twice as informative.

"The United States cannot have all Mail In Ballots. It will be the greatest Rigged Election in history. People grab them from mailboxes, print thousands of forgeries and 'force' people to sign. Also, forge names. Some absentee OK, when necessary. Trying to use Covid for this Scam!" -- Bursting with disinformation. Not even clear what the heck "print thousands of forgeries" even means. And where are the cases of people being forced to sign ballots?

"MAIL-IN VOTING WILL LEAD TO MASSIVE FRAUD AND ABUSE. IT WILL ALSO LEAD TO THE END OF OUR GREAT REPUBLICAN PARTY. WE CAN NEVER LET THIS TRAGEDY BEFALL OUR NATION. BIG MAIL-IN VICTORY IN TEXAS COURT TODAY. CONGRATS!!!" -- Again, the all-caps really doubles the zero information content of the tweet. Ironic, since the biggest hit to the Republican Party is Trump's own efforts to divide it.

"RIGGED 2020 ELECTION: MILLIONS OF MAIL-IN BALLOTS WILL BE PRINTED BY FOREIGN COUNTRIES, AND OTHERS. IT WILL BE THE SCANDAL OF OUR TIMES!" -- No ballots were printed by "FOREIGN COUNTRIES".

It goes on and on. If you look at the tweet archive, he started harping on mail-in ballots in April 2020 and posted dozens of often information-free, all-caps tweets.

            1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

And you're saying nobody thought "fuck, we better disprove Trump and make mail-in voting truly secure" upon reading those mean tweets, and instead decided to do absolutely nothing and totally prove his point.

Do you know what Critical Thinking is? (No, not critical theory). You should learn how to practice it and then maybe you would embarrass yourself a little less.

Plenty of people did a lot. State secretaries, local election boards, Chris Krebs and his cybersecurity agency.

But it would be ridiculous to expect someone to do something about "VOTER FRAUD!" or "print thousands of forgeries" or "MILLIONS OF MAIL-IN BALLOTS WILL BE PRINTED BY FOREIGN COUNTRIES" because it was all pure FUD.

All you have to do is go out and count the illegal voters. Dead, illegal addresses, non-valid signatures, and review the adjudicated ballots.

If the count is less than the difference in the key states, you have disproved fraud.

                    3. The White Knight II: The White Knight Rises!   4 years ago

newhutz, you do realize those things WERE investigated, don't you? And nothing that was found was anywhere close to the difference in key states.

Furthermore, newhutz you just made a list of actual, specific types of fraud that may have occurred.

Trump only tweeted the vague statement: "VOTER FRAUD!"

Are you endorsing everything he says in this speech, or do you want to waffle now and admit at least some of its contents are that which is not true?

I’ll give you the chance to pre-emptively waffle on it before I tear apart several of his claims.

                    9. The White Knight II: The White Knight Rises!   4 years ago

Let’s look at a few gems from this speech:

“It was all very, very strange. Within days after the election, we witnessed an orchestrated effort to anoint the winner even while many key states were still being counted.”

The networks always try to call the results of elections. Trump is a politician in his mid-70’s that disingenuously acts as if he is not aware of this common media behavior. They’ve been doing it his whole life.

                    10. The White Knight II: The White Knight Rises!   4 years ago

“Many states, such as Nevada and California sent millions of live ballots to every person on their voter rolls whether those individuals had requested ballots or not”

Nevada was the rare swing state that sent out mail-in ballots themselves rather than applications for mail-in ballot.

California was nowhere near being a swing state so whatever they did would not have affected the outcome of the election.

                    11. The White Knight II: The White Knight Rises!   4 years ago

“Dozens of counties in the key swing states have more registered voters on the rolls than they have voting age citizens, including 67 counties in Michigan.”

This just cannot be true. If it were true, it would be blatant, massive fraud that could not be covered up. But what the hell, let’s fact check it, anyway:

                      https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/12/31/fact-check-michigan-townships-had-more-registered-voters-than-votes/4097868001/

"then you claim that the speech never happened, then you ask for a cite;"

Never claimed the speech never happened. There's just no place I said that. I *did* ask for a cite. Later on, when I was back at my desk, not on my iPhone, I googled for speeches and found the one you seemed to be referring to.

You said, "Trump gave an hour long televised speech where he laid exactly what kinds of fraud occurred". So, my question for you, which you have not answered, is do you stand by everything he said in the speech? If you do, then it is fair game for me to "cherrypick". Coronavirus was 'best thing that ever happened' to Biden, key aide says in book
    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/coronavirus-best-thing-happened-to-biden-key-aide-says

COVID-19 was the best thing that could have happened to Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, according to one of his closest advisers.

A new book revealed that Anita Dunn made the comment in private to “an associate,” according to the Guardian, which obtained a copy, at a time when the United States was struggling with rising death tolls, a shattered economy, and a health system close to breaking.

The details are contained in Lucky: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes. It is the first major book on the 2020 election and is due to be published on March 2.

It describes how Dunn said, “COVID is the best thing that ever happened to him,” in comments the authors suggested “campaign officials believed but would never say in public.”

That private thinking reflects what many political analysts said at the time, that the rampant pandemic undermined then-President Donald Trump’s solid economic achievements and standing in national and battleground state opinion polls.

But the comments could be seized on by Biden’s critics that his campaign used the suffering of the public in the opportunistic pursuit of power.

Well, shit, that was obvious from the beginning. The utter obsession with lockdowns by the leaders of blue-voting states and blue-voting cities was so clearly designed to fuck up their economy, that even they were having trouble hiding it.

And in the end, it didn't matter anyway, because 500,000 people and counting still died, assuming those numbers were even accurate to begin with.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

I mean, what were these people in blue areas going to do, vote Republican when their Democratic mayors and governors destroyed their jobs? Hell no, they weren't going to vote Republican. Democratic voters are the biggest jobbers on the planet.

A Champaign County woman accused of taking part in the Jan. 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol was forced to remain naked in her cell in full view of others for days, and her injuries were not treated while she was in local custody, attorneys said in a court filing Saturday....

The two attorneys charged with torching an empty NYPD van during a Black Lives Matter protest in Brooklyn last summer were offered a plea deal by federal prosecutors earlier this month, according to new court documents.

The defendants, Urooj Rahman and Colinford Mattis, were offered the unspecified deal on Feb. 11, according to a court papers filed Saturday by Brooklyn federal prosecutors.

Hunter Biden had fling with sister of deceased brother's widow while dating Hallie Biden
    https://thepostmillennial.com/hunter-biden-hallie-biden-plus-her-sister

In March 2017 Page Six revealed Joe Biden's blessing for the relationship between Hunter and Hallie Biden. The latter being the widow of Hunter's brother Beau, who died of brain cancer in May 2015. But that wasn’t the only entanglement the US President’s son got involved in, according to the Daily Mail.

Beyond romancing his brother's widow, the President's son climbed further up her family tree.

Citing documents from Hunter's abandoned laptop hard drive, the Mail unraveled intimate moments he had with Hallie’s [married] sister, Elizabeth Secundy. The outlet pointed out the timing of the text message conversations between Hunter and Secundy coincidentally around when Hunter and Hallie Biden began dating, in July 2016.

In Report Affirming Nearly No Transmission In Schools, CDC Slips In Shocking Data About Asymptomatic Spread
If the contagiousness of people without symptoms does not drive the spread of SARS-COV-2, then restrictions like lockdowns and mask mandates on the general public don't make sense.
    https://thefederalist.com/2021/02/24/in-report-affirming-nearly-no-transmission-in-schools-cdc-slips-in-shocking-data-about-asymptomatic-spread/

“Children might be more likely to be asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 than are adults…This apparent lack of transmission [in schools] is consistent with recent research (5), which found an asymptomatic attack rate of only 0.7% within households and a lower rate of transmission from children than from adults. However, this study was unable to rule out asymptomatic transmission within the school setting because surveillance testing was not conducted” (emphasis added).

The “recent research” the study authors cite is a meta-analysis of 54 household COVID-19 transmission studies that observed 77,758 participants, which was posted as a pre-print this summer and published in December.

The text of the analysis is even more consequential than the CDC’s reference makes it seem: “Estimated mean household secondary attack rate from symptomatic index cases (18.0%; 95% CI, 14.2%-22.1%) was significantly higher than from asymptomatic or presymptomatic index cases (0.7%; 95% CI, 0%-4.9%; P < .001), although there were few studies in the latter group. These findings are consistent with other household studies28,70 reporting asymptomatic index cases as having limited role in household transmission” (emphasis added).

The 0.7 percent figure includes not just people who never show symptoms of COVID-19, but people who haven’t yet shown symptoms—two groups that have been alleged to be major factors driving the spread of the virus. This is a major data point often underplayed or even challenged in much media coverage of the virus.

    2. ElvisIsReal   4 years ago

We've known this for months but it doesn't matter because this isn't about a virus.

      1. mad.casual   4 years ago

See below, it's a fundamental statistics/math problem and even broaches on fundamental definitions. Even if you mask and lockdown every last carrier, at 100% asymptomatic transmission, everyone's going to get it.

Conceptually, everyone in human history has died with or of COVID and we just haven't identified and masked/locked down/executed all the asymptomatic carriers yet.

    3. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

However, this study was unable to rule out asymptomatic transmission within the school setting because surveillance testing was not conducted” (emphasis added).

This caveat is already undermined by the very fact that, everywhere the data has been recorded, schools where in-person learning has taken place have not been sources of any sort of major outbreaks.

      1. D-Pizzle   4 years ago

Yes, but you can't reach any conclusions based on that, because reasons.

    4. mad.casual   4 years ago

If the contagiousness of people without symptoms does not drive the spread of SARS-COV-2, then restrictions like lockdowns and mask mandates on the general public don’t make sense.

Even if the contagiousness of people without symptoms is 100%, restrictions like lockdowns and mask mandates on the general public don't make sense. If the contagiousness is 100% and the IFR is 100% and lockdowns and masks are 100% effective, then they make *some* sense.

      1. mad.casual   4 years ago

But, of course, anyone with 3 credit hours in a college-level virology class or even a HS-level statistics class knows this.

100% asymptomatic transmission of a 100% lethal virus that masks and lockdowns only prevent even a generous 75% of the time still means pretty much everybody's going to die.

  22. JesseAz   4 years ago

In a report on the low transmission rate in schools, the CDC admits that transmission from asymptomatic people is near zero at 0.7%. So make sure to wear those masks!

    https://thefederalist.com/2021/02/24/in-report-affirming-nearly-no-transmission-in-schools-cdc-slips-in-shocking-data-about-asymptomatic-spread/

    3. D-Pizzle   4 years ago

Ugh, these people. There is no "button." Not even the president can initiate nuclear war solely on his say so. I know it's a work of Fiction, but Tom Clancy shows this rather well in A Clear and Present Danger, and that man knows his shit. In a fit of temper, the president wants to nuke Iran, but the rest of the national security inner circle puts a halt to that immediately.

      1. Peter Mathewson   4 years ago

I agree there's no button and given who the President would have to order to make a nuclear strike a reality the idea he can do so alone seems odd.

However, Constitutionally speaking, POTUS has authority to start a war and deploy force where necessary for up to 90 days without authorization from anyone else. So technically I think it is possible the President could do this, just very, very, very unlikely.

To combat racism in space, we need to send more black people to Mars to set up colonies. Of course, we won't be able to pay them while they're on Mars and, even if we did, they wouldn't be able to spend it anywhere. So, for the first little bit, they'll just have to work for room and board until they've paid their debt for passage and living on Mars. Once it's safe for people, money, and goods to flow freely back and forth from here to there, then we'll let white people go.

And it seems to me that the consequences of being branded a racist can be very similar to the consequences of actual racism: being unwelcome in certain parts of society, losing opportunities for employment, psychological stress. What is the unique damage done by racism that is really different from other forms of social exclusion or unfair discrimination? I can't come up with much.

This is a tale of how race, class and power collided at the elite 145-year-old liberal arts college, where tuition, room and board top $78,000 a year and where the employees who keep the school running often come from working-class enclaves beyond the school’s elegant wrought iron gates. The story highlights the tensions between a student’s deeply felt sense of personal truth and facts that are at odds with it.

"Iran’s revolutionary regime retains power through conspiracy and intrigue, and views everything through that lens. The notion that it will be difficult for the U.S. to regain Iran’s trust after quitting the JCPOA is incorrect. The Iranian regime has never trusted the U.S., and never will."

----Wang Xiyue, former political prisoner of the Iranian regime

"What I Learned in an Iranian Prison"

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/what-i-learned-in-an-iranian-prison-11614200732?

There's something deeply narcissistic about the idea that every bad thing that happens in the world is because of the United States, and the belief that Iran's belligerent stance against the world is all because of the United States seems to be rooted in the hope that Iran would completely change if only the United States capitulated to Iranian demands and allowed them to rejoin the world order. People want to believe the United States is responsible for everything bad that happens in the world because it makes us feel like we're in control.

If the United States hadn't joined in the coalition to defeat Muhammar Ghaddafi in 2011, the people of Libya would have rebelled against Ghaddafi anyway, the Qataris would have invaded Libya to put down the Libyan military anyway, and both the British and the French would have supplied air support anyway. The war may have taken longer to win without our logistical support, or Ghaddafi may have won instead if we hadn't joined in--but there would have been a Libyan civil war with us or without us.

The Rwandan genocide was not the fault of the United States--because we didn't invade Rwanda and the former Zaire, but the narcissists who wish they had control love to imagine that if only the United States had intervened, the bad things could have been avoided and good things might have happened instead. This thinking is really toxic because it suggests that we're not only responsible for all the bad things that happen in the world because of what we do but also responsible for all the bad things that happen in the world because of what we don't do.

When it comes to Iran, there are good reasons to think that what we did by overthrowing a democratic government in 1953 may have contributed to the belligerent state of the Iranian government today, as well as the things we did to them during the Cold War. Regardless of the extent to which our actions in the past have contributed to their belligerent stance today, there is no good reason to think that Iran is about to abandon their belligerent stance today as a consequence of our appeasement.

FDR's decision to close the Panama Canal to Japanese ships, seize Japanese assets, and place an embargo on scrap metal and oil bound for Japan may have made the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor practically inevitable, but the rape of Nanking happened four years before FDR's decisions. Japan wasn't a belligerent nation because of the decisions of FDR. They would have been a belligerent nation even if FDR had done nothing, and there wasn't anything about appeasing Japan that would have made them less belligerent.

I think that's where we are with Iran. Much like the fundamentalists in the Mujahedeen would have been fundamentalists even if the United States hadn't sent them stingers to fight the Russians, I suspect the Islamic fundamentalists of Iran would have been Islamic fundamentalists even if they'd had to overthrow a democratic government rather than the Shah. Regardless, there isn't any good reason now to think that Iran will stop being a belligerent nation if only we appease them by allowing them to enrich their own uranium with impunity. They were state sponsors of terror with a terrorist army in Hezbollah, which they used against their neighbors, before the IAEA ruled that they were in violation and of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the UN Security Council imposed sanctions (with the assent of China and Russia), and I don't see any good reason to believe that they will stop being a belligerent nation because Joe Biden capitulates and allows them to enrich their own uranium.

Those of us who narcissistically imagine that everything bad that happens in the world is the fault of the United States really need to wake up out of their delusion already. We're about to make some really big mistakes.

What she should've done is take the tranny flag off the north wall and put it on the south wall and put the "There are two genders" sign in the flag's old place. "The coinage 'warblog' is attributed to Matt Welch,[2][3] who started his War Blog within days of the September 11 attacks.[4] In the fall of 2001, the attacks gave rise to a "war-blogging movement,"[5] which favoured political punditry over the often personal and technological orientation that had dominated the blog genre up to that point, achieving much greater public and media recognition than earlier blogs.[5] Most warblogs supported the US-led War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War[6] from a hawkish perspective.[7]

Warblogging was popularized by Glenn Reynolds, whose Instapundit was one of the most popular political blogs on the web.[8] Some prominent warblogs, such as Little Green Footballs by Charles Johnson[9] and Daily Dish by Andrew Sullivan existed before September 11, but made the war on terror their primary focus afterwards.[10] Other notable warblogs included Dynamist by Virginia Postrel, KausFiles by Mickey Kaus, Talking Points Memo by Josh Marshall, KenLayne.com by Ken Layne,[10] and Lileks.com by James Lileks.[1]

Today in libertarian news and commentary.

Still, despite Gates’ cheery faith in the ‘power of innovation’, it is easy to see why some might find How to Avoid a Climate Disaster a little hard to stomach. For a start, there is the hey-dude hypocrisy of a man belatedly associating himself with this fashionable assault on fossil-fuels, at the same time as he darts from meeting to meeting in his private jet. He says he plans to use ‘sustainable jet fuel’, and will ‘fully offset my family’s aviation emissions in 2021′ — these are not the words of a man willing to walk the carbon-free walk. They are an admission of double standards – the tribute wealthy vice pays to green virtue-signalling.

    1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

I take issue with the assumption, not from Paul, here, but in the news media, generally, that Gates is somehow a spokesperson for capitalism--because he's rich.

Bill Gates' mentor was Warren Buffett. Warren Buffet owned CapCities-ABC (now Disney) and the Washington Post, and it wasn't just because of the profits. Warren Buffet was a union buster. When you're an old school capitalist, you need the cover of some serious media against the muckrakers. There are a number of ways to head that off beforehand, and the best way amounts to buying them off. Nothing owned by Disney has anything bad to say about Buffett, and if you ever wanted a job as a journalist working for Disney or the Washington Post, you better STFU about Buffett.

Buffett and Gates used to play bridge on a regular basis, and in the wake of Janet Reno coming after Microsoft in 1993 and 1994, Gates woke up to the fact that, like Buffett, he needed a news media property to cover his ass. Gates bankrolled the roll out of MSNBC in 1995 (MSNBC = Microsoft Network - National Broadcasting Company) for the same reasons Buffett owned news media companies. It's insurance against muckraking and the federal government regulation such muckraking brings--and if it pays for its own costs, that's great.

This is also, presumably, why Bezos bought The Washington Post.

Buffett regularly makes obtuse statements that play into the left's narrative (He famously complained about his secretary supposedly paying less taxes than he did), and Gates makes the the same kind of obtuse statements presumably for the same reasons. If you're afraid of the mob wrecking your store, you don't pay off the FBI. The FBI will come to help you if they can anyway. If you're afraid of the mob, you pay them protection money. If you're afraid a nasty guard dog is going to eat you up, you throw him a steak to chew on. That's how I see Gates' public statements. It's buying protection from the socialists, the progressives, and the Democrats. The Republicans mostly admire you for getting rich.

If you don't have anyone protecting you, then the biggest guy on the cell block will come and take everything you've got. Paying what amounts to protecting money in public statements doesn't mean Gates is a legitimate spokesperson for woke capitalism--just because he's rich. All the restaurants on the block that are paying the mob for protection think the mob are a bunch of great guys when you ask them. Go ahead and ask them! They're giving the mob guys free food.

And that's not because they're scared. It's because the mob guys are such. nice. guys.

      1. Moonrocks   4 years ago

Gates is somehow a spokesperson for capitalism–because he’s rich.

It's a propaganda trick. It's the same reason they display "Conservatives" like Mitt Romney agreeing with their agenda, projecting a false image of broad consensus.

If that was the obvious joke, it wasn’t obvious to Unicorn.

And if that’s the joke, it’s lame. Ooh, I’m going to spell Cl with a capital L — because it’s just like accidentally putting the 2 in the wrong place in the formula for after.

Well, not it isn’t. The joke is lame. And none of this has anything with Unicorn missing that case matters in chemical formulas.

"It's troubling that people are more offended by being called racist than by the actual racism in our society," he said. "Allegations of being racist, even getting direct mailers in their mailbox, is not on par with the consequences of actual racism."

This guy is comparing accusations of racism to actual racism. But in reality the comparison is false accusations of racism to actual not racism. I wish I were surprised to learn an ACLU lawyer does not understand there is a difference between false accusations of racism and true accusations of racism or a difference between actual racism and not racism.

This reinforces that the left is controlled by what I call debate reality. In debate reality the actual facts are irrelevant and everyone pretends the left's assertions are correct, so they assert whatever needs to be true to win the debate regardless of its relationship to reality.

  54. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   4 years ago

And the various spooky black figures who rise like obscuring vapors in certain works by authors ranging from John Osborne to Saul Bellow can curtail your visits to those writers’ shelves. Far too often, readers of color have to police the pages, instead of immersing themselves in the solitary beauty of reading. In 1994, a journalist asked Toni Morrison, “When you encountered racial stereotypes in the classics of American literature—in Ernest Hemingway or Willa Cather or William Faulkner—how did you deal with them?” Morrison responded, “I skipped that part. Read over it. Because I loved those books. . . . So when they said these things that were profoundly racist, I forgave them.” But sometimes love is not enough to overcome the “nigger” in an author’s mind.

I trust anything written by Hemingway and Saul Bellow will be exorcised from the Amazon store?
