Professor Elinor 'Lin' Ostrom

In November, Indiana University Bloomington unveiled a statue honoring political theorist and former professor Elinor "Lin" Ostrom, the first woman to win the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Ostrom, who died in 2012 at age 78, was best known for her studies of how local groups manage natural resources.

Needs more meat to the topic. Ostrom has a major groundbreaker in a science drowning in endless differentials and derivatives. She gets to the heart of economics itself, the allocation of scarce resources in a society. She threw the shoe at those crusty old men who asserted that a strong state was needed in order to solve the problem of the commons and manage natural resources. She fully deserved her Nobel Prize.

Agree. Except that this is officially the Sverige Riksbanks Prize in Economic Science in memory of Alfred Nobel

It is an excellent example of what money can buy and how money can be used to rewrite truth. Sverige Riksbank gave money to the Nobel Foundation in 1968 to create an endowment for the prizes. In exchange, the Nobel Foundation has publicly pretended that Nobel rewrote his will after death.

There were plenty of ways for this sort of post-facto new prize to be - basically honest. Why is it not a surprise that the economics prize isn't that.

Several people tried to get her to espouse standard big-government liberal values in the discussion after the talk and she cut them off at the knees. It was clear they knew nothing about her scholarship at all.
