The British government plans to deport twins born in London to two separate countries. Darrell and Darren Roberts were born to a Dominican father and a Grenadan mother. Children born in the United Kingdom to parents who are not British citizens don't automatically acquire British citizenship, and the brothers never became citizens despite living in the United Kingdom their entire lives. Both brothers were sentenced to prison for grievous bodily harm in separate incidents. Darrell has already been released and given a deportation notice to the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Darren says he has been ordered deported to Grenada when he finishes his sentence. No word on how the government decided which country to deport each brother to.

I don't disagree with Britain wanting to get rid of a couple of criminals who don't have British citizenship. What I don't understand is how they can have no citizenship at all -- stateless is the term, I believe. If birth does not give citizenship to where they are born, this must be known to the hospital, midwife, whatever; wouldn't citizenship be assigned to the parents' country? Or does that country not pass on citizenship.

I guess the puzzle is how today's mammoth government bureaucracies could let a prospective tax payer slip through their grasp.

Each country sets the rules for citizenship. My children are dual citizens because the laws of each country recognize their citizenship through the circumstances of their births.

There are gaps that could result in stateless births. A US citizen does not pass citizenship by right-of-blood if US residency requirements have not been met:

For birth on or after November 14, 1986, the U.S. citizen parent must have been physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for five years prior to the person’s birth, at least two of which were after the age of 14.

So a US citizen couple could move to a country that only recognizes right-of-blood citizenship. Their children are born there and gain only US citizenship through their parents. The children never return to the US, so their children aren't US citizens or citizens of the country where they were born.

(A large part of the immigration problem in the USA is failure to find those who have already been identified for deportation or for hearings; this sounds like the Brits are aiming to have the same failure.)

See, the father is from *Dominica*, not the Dominican Republic. They're deporting that one twin TO THE WRONG COUNTRY because of a mistake the government functionary made when filling out the forms.

This is why nationalism is so fucked when practiced in the US. Because it's trying to be like Europe but it can't be. In England you can't be an Englishman unless your granddad was an Englishman. In France you can't be French unless your great granddad can.

That attitude makes no sense in the US, where the only true natives are consigned to reservations. We took the best parts of England then told the mother island to go bugger off as we went our own way. We're not meant to be nationalists, we're meant to be Americans.
