Another Round of Coronavirus Lockdowns Might Be Coming. They'll Be Far Less Enforceable Than Before.
Plus: Albuquerque police will no longer respond to some 911 calls, the Federal Reserve creates a perverse incentive for corporations to borrow more heavily, and more...

There's probably no better demonstration of the nonsensical nature of America's ongoing coronavirus lockdowns than the scene that played out on Monday at a playground in Brooklyn.
Middleton Playground, in the New York City borough's Williamsburg neighborhood, had been closed since June 1 for "social distancing violations"—because children were using the playground to, well, play. After repeated violations of the closure order, the city dispatched workers to the playground on Monday to weld the gates shut.
"We had to secure the location and did not have our typical resources available so as a short term fix we welded one of four entrances shut," a spokesman for the city's parks department told National Review's Zachary Evans.
Residents of the neighborhood soon took matters into their own hands.

This is the state of affairs all across America nearly three months after quarantines, lockdowns, and stay-at-home orders were first imposed to "flatten the curve" of the coronavirus pandemic. The number of COVID-19 cases is rising in many places, prompting fears that reopening plans could be halted or reversed. But public officials—from the ones running the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio—have largely squandered the public trust that would be necessary to impose another round of shutdowns.
People are understandably frustrated that for months they were forbidden from attendings weddings or funerals for loved ones because officials said gatherings of more than 10 or 25 people were a public health threat—only to see many of those same officials cheer massive protests that have spread through cities in recent weeks.
Thousands of people gathered outside of the Brooklyn Museum for a Black Trans Lives Matter rally on Sunday, but a few dozen kids can't go to a playground on Monday?
Some officials, including de Blasio, have tried to explain this seeming contradiction away by arguing that the protests matter so much that violations of lockdowns and social distancing should be tolerated. But the relative values of social justice and playtime don't matter much to the average American, who is now far more likely to roll his or her eyes at the idea that we should modulate our concern about spreading a deadly disease for some social activities but not others.
Of course, the alternative to another set of lockdowns is pretty grim too.
Larry Kudlow says record number of coronavirus cases in some states is something we're going to have to get "used to," adds that Trump is "disinclined" to recommend the re-closing of state economies even if cases spike pic.twitter.com/XCY2WbmTra
— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) June 15, 2020
Sure, you can probably expect most civic and state officials to handle things with considerably more finesse than de Blasio. The next round of lockdowns, if they occur, are unlikely to involve literally locking the public out of certain spaces. But that may not matter, now that people have decided to bring bolt-cutters.
FREE MINDS
Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will no longer respond to some non-emergency 911 calls under a plan unveiled Monday by Tim Keller, the city's mayor. Instead, Albuquerque will put together an unarmed civilian public safety department to respond to calls involving "homelessness, addiction, and mental health."
Mayor Tim Keller to Refocus Millions in Public Safety Resources with First-of-Its-Kind Civilian Response Department https://t.co/1X9JkWatBj pic.twitter.com/sQoEEwmezu
— Mayor Tim Keller (@MayorKeller) June 15, 2020
If such a program had been in place in March, at least one resident of Albuquerque might still be alive today. Valente Acosta-Bustillos was killed by police inside his own home on March 30 during what was supposed to be a routine "wellness check." Acosta-Bustillos' daughter had called the police to ask them to check on her dad after he had not shown up to work for several days.
Even without such hideous examples—and there are far too many—of police officers killing the people they are supposed to be helping, Albuquerque's new policy makes a lot of sense. Police exist to enforce the law, not to serve as frontline social workers. And since any encounter with an armed police officer, no matter how mundane, has the potential to turn violent in an instant, cities should be aiming to reduce how frequently those encounters occur.
FREE MARKETS
The Federal Reserve will begin buying up corporate debt from private corporations in an attempt to reduce those companies' borrowing costs. The Fed was already buying corporate bonds from companies in some circumstances, but now it will allow itself to purchase the debt of any corporation selling bonds on the open market.
The shift in strategies is meant to address growing worries about the record-high levels of debt on corporate balance sheets. But, as the Associated Press notes, "the Fed's purchases should hold down corporate bond yields, making it cheaper for companies to borrow." That's not a recipe for getting companies to reduce their levels of debt, plus it seems more likely to only further inflate the corporate debt bubble. Whether as a moral hazard or as an act of overt corporate welfare, the Fed's new policy seems questionable at best.
QUICK HITS
• Some members of Congress benefited from loans that were supposed to help small businesses survive the coronavirus-imposed economic shutdown, and the Trump administration is still refusing to disclose vital information about the program.
- Quintessential American stubbornness is making COVID-19 worse.
• Some governments around the world are asking people to use wearable devices—like smartwatches—to track coronavirus cases, but that's causing "new unintended consequences for privacy, association, and freedom of expression."
• North Korea destroyed a building used for diplomatic meetings with South Korean officials. It was not occupied at the time.
• There may not be a Major League Baseball season at all this year, as negotiations between team owners and the players union over a proposed shortened season have soured.

Hello.
Sounds like Fist just doesn't care anymore.
Agreed.
Can you blame him?
He's now "FTS of Etiquette."
Pretty despicable what De Blasio did but then again are we surprised?
This is beyond Kafka now. The blindingly bizarre and stupid hypocrisy of it all.
This corona thing really revealed how a) how poorly served we are and b) how easy it is to herd sheep.
I don't normally play the whole race card, but it sure does seem like he doesn't particularly care for the jews.
Warren Wilhelm Jr. loves "Jews". He just hates "Zionists", "right-wing Israelis" and "Hymies" which are the proper lefty terms to use for when you're hating on Jews.
It's only antisemitism if you use the wrong words.
He's progressive. Hello. Hand in hand.

The orthodox jews in NYC are well known for openly flouting all the nanny state rules. De Blasio probably lays in bed every night fuming about it.
It's got nothing to do with the Jews. All playgrounds in NYC are closed. Why? Who the **** knows. The CDC now says the virus doesn't persist on objects. And kids don't seem to infect others. But that's the rule and he's enforcing it, except when it comes to his favorite cause, which is so important that it overrides everything else. (Which is viewpoint discrimination, and completely unconstitutional, but that's a different discussion.)
How else are we to achieve Soylent Green?
And Boehm didn’t even include the fact that NY isn’t gonna even attempt to contact trace for going to these rallies.
But Jews will have to get the app.
The app with the gold star icon?
Funny that he's locking down playgrounds at the same time he's battling the governor over the complete lack of social distancing at Manhattan bars.
There's probably no better demonstration of the nonsensical nature of America's ongoing coronavirus lockdowns than the scene that played out on Monday at a children's playground in Brooklyn.

How did the Chinese get compliance from the American POWS? These men were trained to provide only name, rank, serial number. Short of torture, how could the captors hope to get such men to give military information, turn in fellow prisoners, or publicly denounce their country?
The Chinese answer was to start small and build. Prisoners were asked to make statements so mildly anti-American or pro-Communist as to seem inconsequential "The United States is not perfect." "In a Communist country, unemployment is not a problem."
Once they complied with these minor requests, the men were pushed to submit to more substantive ones. A man who had agreed that the United States is not perfect might be asked provide examples. He might then be asked to make a list of "problems with America" and sign his name

I'm guessing May didn't do them any favors either. And when did the riots begin?
Wait a minute. I thought anti-lockdown protests were motivated by white privilege. I'm so confused.

Reason.com's benefactor Charles Koch only earned $496,000,000 yesterday.

It is amazing how often this happens. Just an accident... that happens with regularity.
Accidents that always happen in the same direction are no accident.
About 80% of Americans who have died of Covid-19 are older than 65, and the median age is 80. A review by Stanford medical professor John Ioannidis last month found that individuals under age 65 accounted for 4.8% to 9.3% of all Covid-19 deaths in 10 European countries and 7.8% to 23.9% in 12 U.S. locations.
For most people under the age of 65, the study found, the risk of dying from Covid-19 isn’t much higher than from getting in a car accident driving to work. In California and Florida, the fatality risk for the under-65 crowd is about equal to driving 16 to 17 miles per day. While higher in hot spots like New York (668 miles) and New Jersey (572 miles), the death risk is still lower than the public perceives.
From your link.
Yet we are still asked to panic.

A teachable case of the oppressed victim race hierarchy.
In most of the US, brown (Hispanic) people are victims. In NM they are the oppressors (of indians).
And something you will never hear at a Manhattan cocktail party, the indians have tribes and factions that hate each other, with historical victim and oppressor legacies.

Blame seems to be from both sides. Antifa had hit the guy multiple times with a skateboard while charging at him and yelling "kill him." The militia guy was also throwing antifa members to the ground prior.
The guy was pushed out onto the middle of the street and the rioters advanced on him. Then he pulled out pepper spray to ward off the crowd advancing on him and then when they kept advancing he pulled out a gun and shot and wounded one of the people assaulting him. That sounds like self defense.
Prior to that he was trying to get into the crowded area and threw a woman to the ground who was intentionally moving in front of him to block his way.
It seems to me he was escalating this consistently to the point that his only choice was to pull a gun and shoot people.
You mean like taking pickaxes to public property and beating the shit out of anybody who tells you not to? Like that you fucking little piece of slimy shit?

Addicted to Disinformation:
Nine ways Fox has pushed disinformation about civil unrest to terrify its audience. The network can’t stop pushing hoaxes on its website, on Twitter, and on its airwaves.
https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/nine-ways-fox-has-pushed-disinformation-about-civil-unrest-terrify-its-audience
If it wasn't for proglydytes, Fox's ratings would probably be about half of what they are.
Here's how you can discern "news" from "propaganda".
The very first item on their list: " Fox tried to manufacture evidence-free antifa panic."
They claim there is no evidence of antifa involvement in illegal acts, citing an effort by the New York Times to uncover links to antifa via arrest records.
Well, that settles it then. The NYT says so, it must be so. Clearly, without evidence. Fake news!
Or... you could simply look at any of the live video from CNN from the early protests that turned violent, attacking and burning police vehicles and stores. Just, you know, use your eyes. You don't need the NYT to research it for you and find that their own hopes have been confirmed. Just look for yourself.
In cities all across the country we saw groups that dressed like antifa dresses, spraypainted graffiti indicative of antifa, chanted slogans of antifa.... and smashed and burned stuff. But, you know.... without evidence.
If the very first thing on your list of "disinformation" is itself "disinformation".....
Well... there's your clue.
They claim there is no evidence of antifa involvement in illegal acts, citing an effort by the New York Times to uncover links to antifa via arrest records.
My guess is all the NYT did was see if any of the people arrested were "known members" of Antifa, nevermind the fact that there's no such thing. It's not like there's any single, national level organization with membership roles that hands out handy ID cards or some shit.
Or… you could simply look at any of the live video from CNN from the early protests that turned violent, attacking and burning police vehicles and stores. Just, you know, use your eyes.
What, trust your own lying eyes instead of whatever your "betters" tell you? That's just crazy talk.

Or is it: "BLM and Antifa aren't doing any of the violence! It's all being done by despicable white supremacists!"
Go die in a fire. The truth is not in you.
Some officials, including de Blasio, have tried to explain this seeming contradiction away by arguing that the protests matter so much that violations of lockdowns and social distancing should be tolerated.
Did they argue while wearing facemasks?
Congrats on making lockdown unconstitutional. No longer content free; you're shutting down a church service BECAUSE it is a church service and thus not as important.
SCOTUS literally just issued a ruling a week ago OKing that, so.
No SCOTUS issued a ruling saying church services weren't exempt from blanket lockdown orders.
Not to mention the fact that shutting down economic activity has had a disproportionately damaging effect on poor minority communities and has done far more harm to individuals than police violence does.
Maybe lots of things are more important than avoiding infection with one particular virus.
Here's the contradiction: "We've got plenty of power to drag 10 year olds and their mothers away from a playground, but not enough power to suppress the protests."
Antifa thugs might be dangerous.
We really screwed the pooch on the lockdowns... and shockingly it was the political pundit class and media that drove that screwup. They were so eager to find a partisan angle that they pressed hard for uniformity across all jurisdictions.
So even as New York did their best to do everything wrong, other parts of the country were shutting things down too early.
In the end, New York lucked out and got things shut down enough in time and the hospitals were never overwhelmed, although it was close and there were stressful days.
But you only get one 3 month lockdown. It is a one-time only deal. The cost was way too high to get a repeat of that. Yet we used it in places across the country that had very low infection rates... basically everywhere except the areas adjacent to New York City. So we kept infections extremely low in most of the country for 3 months.
What did that accomplish? It kept the virus from spreading in the population... meaning we didn't flatten the curve, we delayed it. Much of the country has not even started the curve to any great degree. So they would have to be on permanent lockdown until a vaccine has been discovered.
This is what happens when people are not smart enough to understand and implement simple objectives. If the policy from the CDC was to "flatten the curve", then a set of models for how much of a lockdown is needed and for which part of "the curve" it is needed. But they didn't do that. They just said "keep away from everybody to stop the spread of the virus". Well, that doesn't flatten the curve if you only have 10 cases in your county. As long as you have a naive population, you are going to be in exactly the same place you were Feb 1.
And what of the "rise in cases". We are doing all of this testing... do we have any clue where the transmission is occurring?
That would be helpful information. Information we are not getting. If the transmission is all happening at neighborhood parks where kids are playing, then we'll know where to concentrate our efforts. Or if there is a big burst of transmission because of large gatherings in the streets, then we'll know what to do there.
Is it bars and restaurants? Is it the workplace? Tinder?
The only clue like this I have seen publicly discussed is the outbreaks among farm workers in a couple of states. Which makes sense - they usually ride to the fields on tightly packed trucks, bunk in close quarters for the season.... seems like a good place to spread the virus.
But the rest of it is just being reported as "rising in Florida". Well, that's not helpful at all.
These are "alarming spikes", Citizen. You are advised to keep your distance.
If on day one in journalism school, wanna-be reporters learn about "if it bleeds, it leads", then on day two, do they get a list of inflammatory words? Does "spike" mean any increase in quantity regardless of actual numerical values? Do journalists even understand math?
Fucking drama queens and attention whores.
Does “spike” mean any increase in quantity regardless of actual numerical values? Do journalists even understand math?
A rise from 0 to 1 cases is infinite growth!
They don't understand math. It's a big reason why they're journalists.
Or if there is a big burst of transmission because of large gatherings in the streets, then we’ll know what to do there.
More autonomous zones?
Much of the country has not even started the curve to any great degree. So they would have to be on permanent lockdown until a vaccine has been discovered.
A cynic would be inclined to suspect that's the whole point.
Fauci and Gates have both advocated for exactly that.
The hospitals were never close to being actually overwhelmed. The multiple temporary hospitals set up were never even used for the most part.
https://www.npr.org/2020/04/07/829091975/new-yorks-temporary-overflow-hospitals-remain-underused-despite-covid-19-crisis
And all they'd have to do with a re-spike is what they should have done to begin with--set up a temporary facility dedicated exclusively to coof patients. If you have symptoms, go get tested. If you test positive, you go in the temp facility. Encourage mask wearing in public places.
The protests threw whatever atoms of credibility our leaders had left on this out the window. If they try to re-implement lockdowns, I wouldn't be surprised to see some governors and DAs dodging assassination attempts within a few weeks. A new lockdown would basically fuck whatever slivers of the economy are still functioning and put is in a Depression.
I wouldn't be surprised if this new doom-mongering from the Democrat-media complex is coming about because the new cases are in line with the incubation period from the protests, coupled with the fact that the unemployment rate actually improved in the last release.
To be honest, if NY didn't institute its nursing home policies, they probably would have not gotten even close to a medium fill of hospitals. Their actions caused a worsening of the situation... but trust them next time.
The protests have proven two things:
1) the lockdowns were bullshit tyranny for the sake of tyranny from the beginning
2) violence is the right way to get what you want from tyrants
Did they have enough personnel they could call on? I always wondered whether those temporary facilities were a big bluff.
They were firing nurses due to lack of non covid patients. So my guess is yes.

"Solar industry sees a threat to one of its top selling points"
[...]
"The solar industry, struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic, faces another threat at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission: a petition that would effectively end a key incentive for installing rooftop solar called net metering.
The New England Ratepayers Association on April 14 asked FERC to declare that the agency has jurisdiction over net metering, which requires utilities to buy excess power from customers who generate electricity with their own energy resources, such as rooftop solar panels...

Ms. Thatcher warned you guys...
I think it's a great idea to have someone other than the local police do welfare checks. Cops don't want to mess with it and they don't need to be called unless the unarmed welfare checkers encounter a difficulty. Will be interested to see (1) how it's funded and (2) how it works.
Welfare checks? Where the fuck in the federal or state constitutions or city charters does it say that government will make house calls to see how people are doing? If you are concerned about a relative or friend and can't take the time to visit, or find another friend to do it for you, hire your own damned social worker.

.... alternative to another set of lockdowns is pretty grim too.
If you are 80 years old. Otherwise, not so much.
You hate grandma! And you hate the idea that pandering to her* irrational fear of cooties must justify locking down all other people forever.
*Actually most seniors are less paranoid about themselves than nannies and Karens are for them.
Seniors are the least cautious group I have seen while out and about.
At the beginning of the school year, we planned a trip to bring the kids up to hang out with my mother (who is 81) during part of their spring break. In March, I talked to her to see if she wanted us to cancel the trip, given that our area was starting to see cases and her's hadn't yet. She told me that since she could die whether or not she gets COVID, and she could get it whether or not we come visit, of course she wanted me to bring her grandkids up to see her.
So, will members of this new "unarmed civilian public safety department" have any kind of training or knowledge in how to deal with, say, mentally ill and/or homeless meth-heads? I agree in general principle with the idea of reducing the number of encounters people have with armed police officers, but I can see encounters between crackheads and members of this new department ending badly for the members of this new civilian department if they don't know how to deal with crazy people or drug addicts.
More than likely the first time one of these people get killed by a crazy homeless drug addict they'll go back to sending out the cops for things like wellness checks and they'll be back to square one. I'm not sure what the solution is, but this may not work out as well as everyone seems to think it will. Hopefully I'm just being overly pessimistic.
Pretty much this. That or they'll drop the "unarmed" part and you'll have a wonderful parallel totally-not-police politicized brute squad accountable to no one committing all manner of atrocities. I mean, it's not like anyone cares when the cops kill homeless people or drug addicts. They only care when police kill black people, for any reason justified or otherwise.
Separate police that only deal with “mentally ill” people with no accountability? That could never happen.
And we can limit their responsibilities to a given patch of land and buildings. Those buildings could be a sanctuary, a fenced refuge where the mentally ill could feel and actually be safe.
Hmmm, we could call those buildings...I'm sure the Greeks had a word or two we could borrow.
if they don’t know how to deal with crazy people or drug addicts
You mean like the armed cops do?
They'll just do the same thing EMS does: stage until police arrive and the scene is secure. Every single time. And then they'll wonder how the price of response doubled.
This sounds like something that social workers are doing already. My cousin, who works in the field, says, "Yes, we're trained to deal with this. Part of the training is knowing when to say, 'if you don't want my help, I'm not going to force it on you' and walk away."
In other news, looking forward to the 'Mohdi's Emulation Of Trump Sparks WWIII' article from Dalmia.
This is definitely Trump’s fault.

"U.S. retail sales jumped in May by the most on record and double forecasts, regaining more ground than expected after unprecedented drops the prior two months as states allowed more merchants to reopen.
Sales soared 17.7% from the prior month, the most in data going back to 1992, following a revised 14.7% slump in April, according to Commerce Department data issued Tuesday. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a 8.4% gain in May."
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-06-16/u-s-retail-sales-soared-a-record-17-7-in-may-double-forecast?
Progressives have seemed unashamed to root against the economy for a long time, and they better keep hoping for another series of lock-downs--because from the unexpected drop in the unemployment rate last week to the remarkable jump in retail sales, things keep looking better and better for the economy all the time.
And it really is about the economy, Stupid!
And that doesn't even include all the products that got looted!

They'll kill you with kindness.
Meanwhile, Albuquerque has been among the ten most violent cities in America for long time.
https://www.krqe.com/news/albuquerque-ranks-among-nations-top-10-most-dangerous-big-cities/
Compare it to Phoenix and wonder why.
Sitting between Arizona and Texas, why aren't they more like them and less like Detroit and St. Louis?
Yeah, but that violence is largely confined to a few sectors of the city--if you look at a crime heat map, it's mainly areas along the highways in general and a section of the city near the Air Force base in particular known as the "Combat Zone," but what's colloquially known as the "International District."
There was a huge spike in crime during the late 2010s that mostly consisted of thefts, especially of vehicles, and the city's always had a bad drunk-driving problem. You really don't want to be driving around town between 10 pm and 3 am, because you don't know if some drunk asshole is going to plow through a red light and t-bone your ass. There's also those creepy ghost bikes all over the city.
P.S.
Minneapolis has an African-American population around 19%.
Albuquerque's African-American population is around 3%.
When Minneapolis defunds its police department on the basis of systemic racism against African-Americans, it makes sense that they could have a major problem with racism if they're policing such a large community. If crime statistics were truly random, we would expect interactions with Minneapolis' police department to be more than six times that of Albuquerque's. This is to say that statistically, African-American interactions with racist police officers are probably more infrequent in a place where African-Americans only make up 3% of the population.
Looks like bandwagon jumping to me. I'm not sure the solution to Albuquerque's problems, whatever they are, are the same as they are in Minneapolis, and that might suggest they don't necessarily have the same solution either.
"I’m not sure the

The nursing home thing has been spent and now awareness prompts people to be more vigilant. I think those two measures will be enough to keep this virus pretty much in check.
Spikes aren't waves.
Problem is the damage to the psyche is already done with all these retarded protocols, cries for vaccines and contact tracing apps. I don't get the point of any of this at this stage.
So far? Norway and Sweden have been handling this right.
Everyone else is an idiot.
With the nursing homes measures, I mean next time out, I presume cocksuckers like Murphy, Whitmore and Cummo will do their damn jobs and isolate them better.

Obviously, it's the CPDs fault for not catching Jussie Smollett's white, MAGA-hat-wearing attackers.
Here's a tip: look at the actual data. At this point, I trust Wikipedia at least as much as the official sources.
Despite dramatic increases in testing nationwide, the number of daily confirmed cases has trended down for at least two months now.
Hospitalizations and deaths are down 60% from April.
New York's case and death numbers are down over 90% from their April peak.
Areas opening up are seeing predictable upticks in their case numbers-- and in a couple of weeks, they will predictably start to tick back down again. The virus is playing itself out.
Second wave? More lockdowns? Complete and utter bullshit.
(And of course no one would put up with them anyway.)
Of course that's U.S. data. Wouldn't want to be in Brazil right now.
Here's the hospitalization chart. Notice a trend since April? Which media outlet is all over this? Thought so.
Albuquerque will put together an unarmed civilian public safety department to respond to calls involving "homelessness, addiction, and mental health."
this should be the norm and in fact should be how it works for all calls that do not involve actual violent crimes in progress.
Just wait until one of the new public safety department members is beat up or raped or murdered and from then on they will be accompanied by armed police. and will teh new PSD respond in a timely manner with their own marked cars. the idea sounds good it won't last or will just be another big buracracy that can throw people in jail just like child protective services does
I can see it ending up like that.
but it doesn't change the fact that ideally, armed police departments are stripped down to the bare bones and only are called upon for protection from actual violent crimes.
At what point in human history have progressives ever shown that to be their aim?
but who will determine if a situation will become violent or not send the PSD and then they call teh real police shortly after a situation has already gotten out of hand. its just another level of government that also won't will be accountable since it will hide behind their badge that they will also have
still better than just having armed thugs trained for hair-trigger violence roaming around the streets looking for action.
Albuquerque will put together an unarmed civilian public safety department
Is anyone there aware that there are missionaries willing to do this for free?
Missionaries don't join public-sector unions.
If the goddam protests had mattered so fucking much more than flattening the curve, the goddam politicians should have either reined in the police ages ago, or never locked down the economy. One or the other bud, you don't get both.
You cannot get a clearer proof of political hypocrisy or duplicity.
That is something, isn't it? The bosses acting like they're not the bosses, protesting with the rest of us against The Man. What's the point? Making sure we complain loudly against what they themselves are doing to us? Like it's some therapy or something? Yes, yes, go on, cry it all out.
For regulatory decisions, we look at a cost-benefit analysis, taking approximately $5 million dollars as the value of a life. Assuming that the shut down will cost $10 trillion (which is low), we would have to see 2 million deaths before the benefit is greater then the cost. It is cold, but we do that for many other aspects of our society (such as airplane safety).
You won't succeed as a politician with your logical thinking!
"...(such as airplane safety)."
Or leaving your bed in the morning to go to work.
It is cold
How is the government leaving people alone to take care of themselves as they see fit 'cold'? You are insufferably stupid.
It is "cold" to put a price on a human life. It is commonly necessary, but for anyone with humanity, it does not feel right.
I would like to point out what should be obvious.
We initially locked down to stop a deadly disease with a 2% mortality rate that could cut down people in the prime of their lives and that no mask would protect you from.
However, further data has shown that the coronavirus is actually a disease with a 0.1-0.3% mortality rate that primarily hurts the extremely elderly and people with confounding factors. A simple bandana will greatly reduce the spread. Also, due to the significant fraction of people who have extremely minor symptoms, it's estimated that we already have significant herd immunity (just doing the division from deaths, we have had 30-100 million cases).
This new information makes the original lockdown order seem absurd. We were worried about something on the scale of the Spanish Flu, but we got something that was weaker than measles (which has a 0.1% death toll in young children).
Think of the old people who will die 9 months earlier than they would have with a lockdown, you heartless libertarian!
I know you are being flippant, and I'm not saying any death isn't tragic. However, when talking about the differences between March and now and potential second lockdowns, it's important to consider not only the changing cultural conditions but the changing facts about coronavirus. While the former is important from a practicality standpoint, the latter answers whether we even should have shut down to begin with.
Mayor DeBlasio, let my people go!
no.
Context?
What does the NAP have to say about dealing with Maoism?
"Bend the knee"
Y'all might want to work on figuring that one out.
Or just go out like a bitch. Your choice.
LOL at you pussies mocking supporters of BadOrangeMan while kneeling before Marxists
Where are you getting that from, Nardz?
My question to being told, "Bend the knee", is, "Or what?"
Or they shoot you, throw you in prison, take all your financial resources, etc.
My point about the NAP, though that might be imprecise and possibly the wrong area to address, is that it's a principle completely impotent against concentrated collective effort. It only works in an environment without significant threats.
"Libertarians" have been around for, what, 50 years? That's half the Progressive Era.
And look where we are now.
What has been accomplished?
We have a well funded totalitarian movement using Maoist tactics and backed by all our biggest business brands, education institutions, media, and half the country's politicians. In the face of this, libertarians seem to be content to play useful idiot and jerk off to the idea of revoking qualified immunity.
I'm obviously generalizing, but have seen no indication that it's an unfair generalization.
Applicable to all? No.
Applicable to too many? Yes.
Libertarians will capitulate to totalitarian Global Socialism, so long as they can cry "both sides!" as they board the train for their labor camps
So, what are you going to do about it? Are you about to take up arms to fight the totalitarian movement?
Maybe.
Damn sure not going to pretend progressivism isn't a unique and existential threat
Are you trying to get him to incriminate himself?
My point about the NAP, though that might be imprecise and possibly the wrong area to address, is that it’s a principle completely impotent against concentrated collective effort. It only works in an environment without significant threats.
It's not a violation of the NAP to prepare an organized defense in case of a "collective effort" that aims to use force on peaceful people or to counter a "significant threat." There will be no pre-emptive strikes or aggressive action against these perceived threats, but defensive action is completely allowed by the NAP.
At what point?
Stop reading my mind!
The question becomes then, when do we reach that point? The whole “they came for X, but I’m not X” phrase is happening right now. There are innocent people all over this country, and the Western World, that are having their rights trashed by progressives with little to no consequences, and the list is growing.
I’m not sure how I would react if I lived near Seattle, and knew anyone who lived or owned property in Chaz. Their rights are being trampled, violently in some cases, and those whose responsibility it is to protect their rights are not just allowing this, but supporting it. And most of the media, including this “libertarian” publication, don’t seem to give a shit about it either.
Do you consider the NAP to include property rights, or just aggression against people?
They dominate corporate America, education, media, tech, and federal government.
That has already happened.
Then they tried to stage a coup.
Now they've created bs hysteria to tank the economy, destroy people's jobs/businesses, and stir racial strife.
Does anyone really think black people are well served by the narrative that you're at risk of being murdered every second of the day just because you're black?
Listen to the messages directed AT black people by their supposed "advocates".
It's psychological warfare.
And now they're clearly demonstrating that they will wield State Power purely for Party gain, rule of law be damned.
The question has become: will it be possible to survive outside The Party in the future?
How long will it be before we go full USSR?
Drinking early today?
It's sad you think that was worth typing.

The blacklivesmatter.com website is very polished. It's worth a look. That's ".com", not ".org" . Good call. The site is mostly filled with niceness, or niceness bromides to put it more accurately. I can kinda understand why BLM has become so popular.
BLM runs on some awkward premises though. Among other head spinners, under /what-we-believe, there is this:
Enraged by the death of Trayvon Martin and the subsequent acquittal of his killer, George Zimmerman...
That damn sidewalk bashed George Zimmerman on the back of the head several times and then, somehow, broke his nose too. And the jury was unable to convict Zimmerman of murder. This is what enraged and motivated the BLM movement.
I know this old news, but the case and reaction to it are important. The State of Florida took a side on the case.
Joel Gilbert explains this in his video:
https://www.thetrayvonhoax.com
I shy away from anything that says hoax in its title. But I am interested in this case so I watched it just for chuckles at first. I watched the whole 2 hours without blinking. The video is not about the murder, or Trayvon, or Zimmerman per se. It's about the witness tampering the State of Florida engaged in. Like I said, the State of Florida took a side.
This is a link to a website that has a link to a .
They also want to end the nuclear family for some reason.
read a little about the goals and philosophy behind socialism, maybe a little bit of Marx.
The reason is clear.
No, they don't. I could not find any such direct mention of this.
Perhaps some previous versions of the BLM website did, but, if so, they are way more careful now.
You are underestimating them. It's you're lying eyes they going after first. Very slowly.
"We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable."
Seems like they have a problem with the nuclear family here.
https://blacklivesmatter.com/what-we-believe/
Yeah, we've seen the effects of treating families as "villages" and defaulting to valorizing single motherhood in the nation's ghettos for about 50 years now.
You can tell whether to take someone serious or not on this issue by depending on if they bring up Trayvon and Michael Brown, including “hands up, don’t shoot”. Once people do that , they are to be ridiculed or ignored.
Dang I just lost 2 hours to that
"Thousands of people gathered outside of the Brooklyn Museum for a Black Trans Lives Matter rally on Sunday, but a few dozen kids can't go to a playground on Monday?"
It seems de Blasio feel that the first amendment is more important then the first amendment.

Jews in NYC just cut the lock @NYCMayor put on their park

Boltcutters of the world unite!
The corona virus lockdowns became unconstitutional the day the allowed the BLM protests. Any jurisdiction that allowed BLM protests set the precedent that it didn't object to large public gatherings. It can't now come back and say other gatherings of the same or smaller size are not allowed. Doing so is making substantive restrictions on assembly that have nothing to do with the stated purpose of public health. So, the lockdowns are done. They can try but they won't survive the first court challenge.
Resistance to coronavirus lockdowns are predominantly right wing, or the provenance of the 'far-right'. That's a no-go.
I'd differ with you on that. They were unconstitutional from the get go.
But whatever tortured justifications were used for the FYTY reasoning fell apart once the protests were considered to be important enough to violate the lockdowns.
I think they were as well. But it was at least debatable before. Now, I don't see how there is any debate.
equal protection under the boot.
If they try lockdowns again, fucking riot
Riots are too imprecise, and impersonal.
Authorities are out of what little passes for their minds if they think they can reinstitute business closures and ban gatherings, after everyone watched tens of thousands of people gathering in the streets for weeks of a mass temper tantrum.
You are looking at the lockdown from a legal perspective. I am too squirrely to participate, so I kept on going. I remember driving past the farms in California when the lockdown first started and noticed the farmworkers were still out in the field picking the crops. Not just that, the work to sow the seeds for the next harvest continued also.
I do not know anything about farming, but I've driven through the farmlands enough to know that there's a rhythm of work to be done.
These are practically all Mexican or Mexican/American workers. They don't need no stinkin' papers to work. I still don't think much of open borders, but they are certainly worth their salt.
If you have food to eat come winter, remember them.
The farmers in Iowa have been planting. Just like usual. Big tractors and big fields though.
Albuquerque will put together an unarmed civilian public safety department to respond to calls involving "homelessness, addiction, and mental health."
All I can say to my fellow Americans is... start carrying guns.
>>There may not be a Major League Baseball season at all this year
christ what assholes. nobody wants to watch you babies play 36% of a season anyway.
Honestly, cutting all professional sports seasons down by 1/3 would immensely increase the quality of the game. The games would mean more and injuries would be cut down. Hell, for baseball I'd be fine with going back to daytime-only games. It's retarded that hockey and basketball season go well into June; end them before May at the latest. Football should have the Super Bowl on New Year's Day. Baseball should end by the first week of October at the latest.
The only reason the owners have been pushing for more games for decades is to make more money. It's certainly not about improving the quality of the game itself.
i suppose i'd be cool with shorter seasons. long seasons have never been my white whale. greedy pitchers on the other hand ...
"have the Super Bowl on New Year's Day"
Super Bowl in early January, yes, but New Year's is a holy day reserved for college football and college football alone.
The players refuse to play because they don't want their salaries pro rated. They want an entire year's salary for playing 80 games. It is unbelievable how out of touch with reality they are. Baseball is not on nearly as sound of a financial footing as the NBA or NFL. IF they don't play this season, there is a real chance a franchise or two could fold. It is amazing how stupid and greedy the players are being here.
>>It is unbelievable how out of touch with reality they are.
Verlander and Scherzer have led the way for awhile now.
I doubt my opinions are universal among sports fans, but three months of forced not watching sports has nearly killed any interest I had in following their activities or front office machinations. In short, like Fist riffed on upthread, I really don't care if they ever come back.
SJW bullshit like how Drew Brees got treated just exacerbates the situation. Get fucked, major sports leagues, and give me my Goddamn tax money back that you stole.
Yeah, the longer there is no sports, the less you miss it and the less motivation you have to go back and watch when it comes back. I think all of these leagues are in for a huge shock when they start playing again. It is going to take them years to get their fans back. And they will never get them back as long as they turn their product into wokeball.
"I think all of these leagues are in for a huge shock when they start playing again. It is going to take them years to get their fans back. And they will never get them back as long as they turn their product into wokeball."
Star Wars, of all things, went busto. I never thought that would be possible, but it did. A multi-tens of billions of dollars intellectual property, and they're going to have to reboot it (or just let The Mandalorian guys run the next one) to get anymore large amounts of money from it.
Sports? I think they'll be very surprised where the giant checks disappeared to. If cable/satellite tv no longer largely subsidizing pro sports wasn't enough. There weren't enough sports fans before COVID to justify these kinds of expenditures. Only by dragging along everyone else who liked cable TV could you get that kind of money. Now? With streaming, I don't see the massive fanbase or revenue stream from same.
they'll just let the Yankees win the Series and Rangers win the Stanley Cup again like last time. that'll get everyone back.
There are a huge number of people out there GLEEFUL at the chance for a renewed lockdown. And they're being bolstered by the media.
Yes, New York City has been a problem. Mainly because it's extremely dense and uses mass transit (otherwise known as virus transmittal tubes). But we're not all living in New York City!
The goal of the lockdown was to "flatten the curve". And we have admirably succeeded at that. The curve is indeed flattened. Reports of "spikes" show no spikes. An increase was always to be expected when the lockdown ease up. But the curve remains flattened. We are not overwhelming our hospitals, and THAT is what matters. That's all that matters.
The idea that we all stay indoors until next summer when the first vaccines start trickling out is fucking insane. The people who think the masks are a big conspiracy are nutters, but they're no more nutty than the social-phobes who want to continue quarantine like measures forever. I personally know one of these people, who expresses his desire that lockdown measures become permanent. (He doesn't have a job, and lives with his girlfriend who is twenty years younger than he is, so to him this is paradise). Most people are going stir crazy, however. Huge swaths of the economy are in the dumpster, and the helicopter solutions are just triggering a massive inflation to make it worse.
We can open up society again without having a massive spit-swap rave! Keep the masks, keep sensible distancing rules, but take the locks off of all the doors!
If it's officially safe enough for protestors then it's safe enough for us!
I'm stunned the US is still dragging out this covid thing. Where's Trump?
The Covid lockdowns coming back are to deter attention from the fact that BLM is a marxist front group that has, as a first demand, required Democrats to pick a BLM leaning VP. We all know that VP will become POTUS.
If the ability exists to show strength by mainstream Democrat Political Party (or anyone to the right of Marx himself), they should ignore this ransom and pick Yang as VP. If Biden folds to this demand, he, along with the U.S., gets castrated and turned in Venezuela in front of the world.
I'm an older female gen Xer and never thought I'd see (in my lifetime) a mainstream political party fold to leftist demands.
100% guaranteed Biden will be picking a black woman.
But, yeah, whoever he picks will be POTUS.
I should "a black woman will be picked for Biden". Seeing his youtube ads ("Hello everyone, I'm coming to you for ask a quick favor..." -- and that was the one they *chose* to run!), I doubt Biden's capable of picking between having yogurt or applesauce for his dinner.
He will of course require that whoever gets picked have nice-smelling hair.
Oh, baloney. The primary motivation for bring back lockdowns, if there is an attempt to bring them back, will be concern for spread of COVID-19. You may disagree with lockdowns, but the conspiracy theories that it isn't being done primarily out of concern for public health is just conservative paranoia.
The primary motivation for bring back lockdowns, if there is an attempt to bring them back, will be concern for spread of COVID-19.
If that was the case, they wouldn't have encouraged mass protests that made the "open up" ones look like family picnics.
Oh, baloney. Yes, the left has cognitive dissonance between support for lockdowns and support for protestors. Cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy are not the same as some secret plot to use lockdowns for some ulterior purpose. That's just conservative echo chamber amplified paranoia about the left.
No baloney. And you basically made my case for me.
Are you doing OBL now, LC?
I've seen the light about Trump. I now realize he's not all that.

"The primary motivation for bring back lockdowns, if there is an attempt to bring them back, will be concern for spread of COVID-19"
Sure, but if the secondary motivation is political or self serving, it would be just as damaging or effective.
If the primary motivation of lockdown was to stop the spread, then mayors would not have supported massive protests after having lashed out at smaller lockdown protests only a month ago. Racism is not a disease or a virus, so to declare it as a health issue in order tolerate a massive violation of safety guidelines is a scientifically illiterate position.
If lockdowns initially kept everyone inside but local government excused thousands of white people from holding their own woodstock 2 months later, who would believe the "primary" goal of the lockdown was generic public safety?
"If the primary motivation of lockdown was to stop the spread, then mayors would not have supported massive protests after having lashed out at smaller lockdown protests only a month ago."
Yes, they would, because they have cognitive dissonance/hypocrisy/inconsistency about supporting lockdowns and supporting protests. That's not the same as engaging in some nefarious secret plot to manipulate all of us.
Sure, despite all the evidence to the contrary, im sure their intentions really are "good"
Totes go with that
"All the evidence"?
Harris is not really "Black" as people think of it. She's have Jamaican and half Indian. So she gets to be "Black" when she wants to, even when having a record of incarcerating Blacks at a record level in California.
It's going to be an older Dem who knows they don't have a shot in '24. Demings would work, but LOL at picking a former police chief now. Warren maybe. If it has to be a swing state, maybe Whitmer or Tammy Baldwin, though both probably have a lot better future chances than this? Shaheen from NH, for an outside straight.
I'm still putting my money on Abrams. She epitomizes the BLM mindset of "Get Y-T and Destroy America," and before the riots, I would have said she was acting way too thirsty for the position, based on reporting about Dem reactions to her. Now, I'd say her position is stronger than ever.
I don't think Demings being a former police chief would actually hurt her in the long run, though. Black voters and black women in particular are the most kept voting demographic in the US, and they'll pull the lever if they think one of their own will be President before 2024.
I think it's going to be Abrams too. She's the perfect Dem. candidate -- woman, black, BLM advocate, likely a lesbian. Plus her only government experience is as a state legislator, so no real baggage.
Biden's bonus is that her hair looks yummy.
You left out fat and angry
From a bunch of lefties I know, they all screeched at the idea of Biden picking a former police chief. Black woman, Impeachment manager, Florida Rep: none of the rest of that mattered.
If Biden picks Abrams, and she get a full audience for how vicious, race-driven, and shrill she is, he might only win the West coast, NY, New England, DC and MD. She's just an unbelievably unlikable, polarizing candidate.
Abrams is basically every head-whipping, finger-snapping, hyper-entitled negative stereotype of black women collected in one person. She's the embodiment of why black women consistently get the lowest reply percentages of any other ethnic group on dating websites. Who the fuck would want to live around someone with that much narcissism and attitude on a full time basis? She's basically a black female version of Trump, without the money or real estate empire.
Never underestimate the number of "Karens" out there.
I think a few true blue-ers will try and lockdown again. Overall I don't see it going well for the statists but the courts seem thoroughly corrupted so it could get ugly if they discard all reason and claim that governors have indefinite dictator powers because of states rights or something.
That mysterious implied suspend the constitution clause which doesn't exist.
PA has a court date on Thursday withe the state SC that will be telling . The legislature passed a resolution to ending the lockdown. Gov Wolf claims he's dictator until he's says so.
Same court a month ago rejected a lawsuit but in its decision stated the legislature can end the lockdown at anytime.
We'll see if they stick with that or whether we get Karen-ed
It has been a couple of weeks since Trump threw a tantrum over Twitter's flagging his tweets. What's been going on with that executive order? Pretty much nothin':

I've been overseas for 5 months and return july 4. I have no idea what I'll be returning to. But one thing is certain, no one will force me into lockdown and no marxista will bully me for being a cisgender male. Fuck them all.
