Hydroxychloroquine 'Is Not a Treatment for COVID-19. It Doesn't Work.'
The antimalarial drug is being removed from United Kingdom's RECOVERY trial evaluating COVID-19 therapies.

A British research team has concluded that hydroxychloroquine is not an effective treatment for COVID-19 and has halted its use in the United Kingdom's RECOVERY trial. That trial was established in March to evaluate the efficacy of various medicines for the treatment of COVID-19.
The Independent Data Monitoring Committee for the trials conducted an unblinded review of the hydroxychloroquine data. Based on that review, the researchers have concluded that "there is no beneficial effect of hydroxychloroquine in patients hospitalised with COVID-19." Martin Landray, one of the principal investigators, told reporters: "This is not a treatment for COVID-19. It doesn't work."
According to the statement from the RECOVERY trial investigators,
A total of 1542 patients were randomised to hydroxychloroquine and compared with 3132 patients randomised to usual care alone. There was no significant difference in the primary endpoint of 28-day mortality….There was also no evidence of beneficial effects on hospital stay duration or other outcomes.
These data convincingly rule out any meaningful mortality benefit of hydroxychloroquine in patients hospitalised with COVID-19.
"The RECOVERY Trial has shown that hydroxychloroquine is not an effective treatment in patients hospitalised with COVID-19," said Peter Horby, the chief investigator for the trial, in the statement. "Although it is disappointing that this treatment has been shown to be ineffective, it does allow us to focus care and research on more promising drugs."
While the RECOVERY researchers was looking into hydroxychloroquine's effects on hospitalized patients, an American-Canadian team of researchers was concluding that the drug also does not work as preventive treatment.
Based on some observational studies, some proponents of hydroxychloroquine remain enthusiastic about the possibility that adding zinc will boost the drug's efficacy. Forthcoming results from ongoing trials will eventually corroborate or refute that lingering hope.
In the wake of the now scandalously discredited observational hydroxychloroquine study published on May 22 in The Lancet, these results should help clinicians, patients, the public and policymakers make better decisions about how best to treat COVID-19.

No one cares anymore, Bailey. We've more on to the new debate of whether to abolish all police forces or declare marshal law. Choose your side!

I care. Thank you for your science reporting, Ron Bailey.
nah you're just playing douchebag contrarian sarc
Don't listen to the chattering Kathy's, Pro Pho. These Trumptards are just mad that Ron, a bona fide scientist who is SMART, actually understands something the Tangerine Rapist wishes he could. Meanwhile, the con man is too busy crushing up Droxy and Adderall and snorting lines off of his on dick as the prostitute Melania is forced to watch to make an intelligent statement.
Look Mike, I came here to talk about the science and discuss Dr. Bailey's findings, not have some kind of dick measuring contest. Try to stay on topic, if that's even possible for you. Hurling insults will get you nowhere in life, dick.
Sounds like you don't want a dick measuring contest because you think Trump is hung like a mule
Didn't realize you were a bootlicking Trump sycophant, I stupidly thought you were someone who could have an intelligent conversation about Dr. Bailey's work. Keep stroking the con man's pecker, Drop.

You have never talked about the science. You steam about adderall and hcq. You then go tell people to never mention zinc even though in most of the pro hcq studies, zinc is an important factor.
You're a joke. And a pedophile.
You use science like a pervert uses a blow-up doll.
Sorry to see Ron joining the chorus trying to murder the world.
"This is not a treatment for COVID-19. It doesn't work."
Everyone who says it works says the same thing - it works primarily as an antiviral which slows the progression of the disease and gives your immune system time to ramp up to combat it, diminishing the severity of the disease. Also, you're supposed to use zinc with it, as its antiviral action is as a zinc ionophore, helping zinc get into cells to stop viral replication.
And what are the studies we see against HCQ? Obvious gross frauds that are *still* paraded as conclusive by the medical mafia for as long as they can manage, or studies that give HCQ to patients after the infection has progressed so far through their bodies that they go to the hospital. And we've yet to see one that includes Zinc.
There are also the usual medical frauds of conflating the failure to reject the null hypothesis as *establishing* the null hypothesis, as Reason's resident "Science" writer does here.
One noteworthy oddity about the trial. It was a multi arm trial testing multiple treatments, but the *only* arm they decided to unblind the data on was HCQ. Nothing suspicious to see here, citizen, move along.

Legitimate question: What about zinc by itself? We're constantly asking about the combination of H-drug with zinc, but what if zinc by itself is conveying all the benefits?
Also, yet another week of waffling between definitive "yes it does" and "no it doesn't" answers. Can't someone just flat out admit that they aren't able to conclusively declare anything? That's like the most scientific principle-know what you don't know.
I've been taking zinc picolinate in addition to my usually overdosing of vitamin C. If it does nothing against coronavirus at least in increases my semen loads. 🙂
You get that excited over dietary supplements?
You know that zinc is an essential element already present in a normal health body, right?
That's what supplements are. You can't supplement something you don't have any of...
Why are you assuming the normal american is healthy?
https://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/micronutrient-inadequacies/overview
Yes, zinc is covered on that study.
I'm not assuming anything. I just want to get an idea of how people are basing their dosing. And assuming deficiency is something that should be expressed, not implied.
Total TDS. Love Trump or leave the country you unpatriotic fucks.
His birthday is coming up. Every true American should celebrate the most libertarian president ever, who has done more for black people than anyone, with the possible exception of Lincoln.
why are you talking to yourself?
His birthday is coming up. Every true American should celebrate the most libertarian president ever, who has done more for black people than anyone, with the possible exception of Lincoln.
Well, with Progressive Democrats in Progressive Democrat controlled cities having cops kneel on black people necks until they die, why not?
How ridiculously droll. Damn sarc.
Here's a study I'd like to see (assuming you could have any study that isn't biased in some way). Healthy intake and choices vs not healthy intake. I'd bet it'd be eye opening.
But I don't believe anything anyone says anymore so I guess there's no fucking point.
I don’t believe anything anyone says anymore so I guess there’s no fucking point.
yea pretty much this.
I wonder if anyone will trust anyone anymore. They will call us science denialist but the scientist did it to themselves. I see Live Science to a political pro antifa spin this morning, if they go full liberal politics like Scientific American did years ago I’ll quit reading them as well. Its to bad
I get the feeling that Ron isn't so much the science reporter anymore. I think he has narrowed his focus to only hydroxychloroquine and whether or not it helps cure the thing that apparently everyone completely forgot about. I'm just basing this on his last 87 posts, so I could be wrong.
You're just mad that the con man's snake oil cure that you sucked out of dick didn't cure your down syndrome. Oh well, I’m sure if you keep sucking, something good might happen!
And you know personally about sucking dick like it has the antidote in it, but still having Downs Syndrome when you were finished.
In worker's paradise, there are no antidotes. They are far too complicated to manufacture using central planning and they only provide people silly niceties like hope and relief from pain. There's also no Downs Syndrome since any babies with it are immediately drown. We only take the best workers in glorious worker's paradise.
My comment had nothing to do with do with it's effectiveness regardless of Trump's endorsement about it. I was making fun of the fact that everyone else has moved past discussing hydroxychloroquine (and apparently the pandemic) yet this is his third article this week about it.
Also, I've noticed you really have a fixation on sucking dicks. Would you care to talk about it? I feel like you're projecting. Is it because no matter how many glory holes you drill in truck stop bathrooms and offer freebies, you still can't get any takers? That's a shame, I have no doubt your technique is flawless.
You'd think the lack of teeth would help him.
Ron is not the science reporter, he's the medical mafia propaganda reporter.
He reads their propaganda and uncritically summarizes it.
'Science' can go get its act together, take the time necessary, and come back with a tested drug or vaccine. Other than that, 'science' can fuck right off.
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/06/protests-carry-risk-even-when-theyre-justified/612652/
...To help would-be protesters reach an informed judgment, public-health experts and journalists alike should strive to provide a neutral accounting of the risks involved. The blunt truth is that those risks include at least some chance of death and disease on a terrifying scale. Protesters objecting to police killings deserve warnings as blunt as what protesters objecting to shutdowns got, not politeness that leaves them less prepared to stay safe. To frame today’s protests not only as a defensible choice but as a choice validated by experts––as if their expertise somehow encompassed all the trade-offs implicit in the judgment—is to pass politics off as public health.
On matters of life and death, the reinforcement of progressive social-justice narratives should not get in the way of simple truth-telling. And when it does, it will only undermine the influence of those charged with informing Americans about the pandemic. The fallout: More Americans will decline to heed any public-health advice or journalism, seeing it as ideological and hypocritical.
If one were to put on their tin-foil cap, wouldn’t it be plausible that medical experts are trying to kill the black community by encouraging protests? Like when the CIA (or whomever) distributed crack (or spread AIDS) to the black communities.
Or is it more believable that the virus was never any terrifyingly real threat to the average person?
If one were to put on their tin-foil cap,
If I were a redistributionist, I'd shut down the economy so that goods pile up at warehouses and retail locations and then encourage looting. If I were a redistributionist looking to get re-elected, I'd shut down the economy so that goods pile up and then, when looting inevitably took place, condemn the looting in only the most passive of manners, including letting the looters free to vote in any upcoming elections.
I eagerly await this study's retraction.
At this point I do not know how to evaluate this as it has bizarrely become a political issue rather than the answer being of interest to medical science.
Well Zinc is to the right. Magnesium though is far left.
Thank you Ron Bailey, for having the integrity to be the most honest reporter in decades, if not centuries.
Aren't you that pedo who lied about paying a tiny bet for years?
And I thought I was a shitbag for walking out on a mortgage and my 4 kids.
I get what's going on here. I know your having fun, but you're depriving the rest of us of the opportunity to shit on the real dirt bags that own these handles. It's just selfish.
In worker's paradise, all handles have same owner
Personally, I am a convert. I now worship "tulpa", and try to emulate his practices. I now realize that his campaign to turn the Reason comments section into a cesspool was inspired, and I am his acolyte.
LOLOL
If you want to suck his cock, just come out and say it.
Coverage of medical issues is chronically under-nuanced, and presents the uncertainty of early work in terms more suited to simple yes-no questions.
Sadly, however, it won't matter if 99% of studies, conducted to the most rigorous standards, eventually show this drug to be ineffective or even counterproductive, there will be those who latch onto the 1% showing something else as "proof" of a "conspiracy" or whatever. See also, all the anti-vax morons who still won't let go of the one deeply flawed, utterly discredited, and totally disavowed work of one British "doctor" in the employ of one drug company to undermine the product of a rival drug company.
They want to believe.
The medical establishment has been demonstrably lying to us since the beginning of the pandemic, with the Lancet Fraud the most recent verified example. HCQ has been a particular target by the fraudsters since the beginning because it is safe and effectively at limiting the severity of corona.
Even Ron admits that the Lancet paper was a gross fraud.
This is just unacceptable science. Not only are they failing to mention zinc, they are also failing to test for the entire cocktail of zinc ionophores. It is entirely possible that hydroxychloroquine isn't sufficiently ionophoric for some patients. That is very well known and obvious. Which is why everyone who knows about this science stuff recommends a combination of ionopheric enhancement (hydroxychloroquine tablets, washed down with tonic water, followed up by sticking asparagus up one's nose) and zinc supplementation (eating your stainless steel spoon rather than simply using it to scoop up stuff, snorting oysters, etc)
No one cares what you think pant shitter.
You believe statistics are racist. Why are you in an article about science based on statistics?
There is no zinc in stainless steel. I
Thanks for adding to the confusion Reason. This story certainly serves some sort of purpose. Not sure what but...
It helps murder the peasants.
Note the idea entirely lacking from this "libertarian" magazine's coverage on HCQ, and all medicine: that patients should be free to choose whatever medicine *they* think best protects them.
Problem solved. In a free country, we wouldn't need to argue if HCQ works or not. You listen to the people who convince you. Everyone can place their bets and take their chances.
The medical establishment is always murdering us by preventing our access to medicines. This time it's HCQ that they're withholding from us, while they strangely keep taking HCQ as a preventive *themselves*.
That's the data we need to see. Are those *free to choose* taking HCQ taking it or not?
That is a pretty substantial sample size, the questions are mostly related to how well they were able to account for confounding factors and disease severity.
Ordinnrily I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, but after the fiasco at The Lancet this is less easily given. They need to show their work and give us breakdowns of the two groups by age, gender, underlying health conditions, days of treatment, etc.
I have to agree. There have been so many bad data points.
This also notes they only mention people who are hospitalized, and they only treated extremely sick patients (25% mortality? That's insane. Normal ICU cases of COVID have nowhere near that death rate).
I am also concerned that they put out a press release only talking about Hydroxychloroquine, not mentioning the other 5 drugs they were testing. This is also preliminary data, which should not be published at all. This smacks of at very least, political messaging, which is a horrific problem in a medical study.
"I am also concerned that they put out a press release only talking about Hydroxychloroquine, not mentioning the other 5 drugs they were testing."
Gotta read between the lines. HCQ was the treatment arm they chose to discontinue, meaning all the others are still being tried.
I think the one thing we can all agree on is that science reporting is too important to not leave to professionals.
These J school morons don't know the difference between a capillary and a coronary if those are the "professionals" you are referring to.
Meanwhile the economy gained 2.5 million jobs in May. In the last week I've been at businesses in 3 states with lots of people engaged in commerce and not a mask in sight. Traffic is quickly approaching pre Covid normalcy. The plague predicted to kill millions has been declared less important than a single black man killed by cops in Minneapolis. The population is moving beyond shit. I don't give a shit if this drug is effective or not. This disease is an inconsequential stub of the toe in any rational view of history. Reason's continuing obsession with it only serves the TOP MEN who created this scam.
Can someone explain to me why a trial study being stopped is worthy of news? There are many trials going on. Why was this particular one chosen?
The study flat states it looked at I individualized treatments, mostly of anti inflammatories. It didnt try any drug combinations. This despite that most doctors prescribing treatment are using a combination of 3 drugs for treatment.
https://www.recoverytrial.net/news/statement-from-the-chief-investigators-of-the-randomised-evaluation-of-covid-19-therapy-recovery-trial-on-hydroxychloroquine-5-june-2020-no-clinical-benefit-from-use-of-hydroxychloroquine-in-hospitalised-patients-with-covid-19
That's because they're not engaging in science, they're engaging in proselytizing.
"Can someone explain to me why a trial study being stopped is worthy of news?"
Because the propaganda against a cheap, safe, and effective treatment for the corona must be pushed daily, or the peasants might live.
Hydroxychloroquine has always had some risks for those with cardiovascular issues, as has azithromycin. This was established long before Covid. Unfortunately, a majority of people hospitalized with Covid fall into that high-risk category, so this drug has not been proven to be largely efficacious, and still carries risks for that same group.
Is the risk of arrhythmia worth it for an already sick, hospitalized patient, many of whom wind up on a vent? SARS-COV-2 is being considered coagulatory, meaning it’s causing clots in patients. Clotting plus drugs that have cardiovascular risks may not be the wisest choice.
Fuck Hydroxychloroquine.
Give the people who have COV-19 10,000 cc of some China white.
At least they'll die happy.
Either that or make them do one million jumping jacks butt naked.
At least they'll die in good shape.
Why not all three?
Whoops.
Time to follow the money.

Gee, who would've thought Big Pharma would lie just to make some money.
What's this world coming to?
WOOOOOWOOOOOOOOOOOH.( Goblins and spooks wave hands)
It’s wrong to report on hydroxychloroquine studies or agency actions without reporting on the two mechanisms that have skewed the most-publicized results:
- At what point in each individual patients’ disease progression was the hydroxychloroquine administered?
- How were patient levels of zinc ion confirmed or supplemented?
For a far-more-intelligent quick take on the world of hydroxychloroquine studies past, present, and future, please see this very-short article and this very-short, informative, and timely paper:

Trump says it works. Trump is taking it every morning with his Fruit Loops. If it's good enough for Trump, it's good enough for me!
In **hindsight**, hydroxychloroquine turned out to not work. The much bigger question, not knowing ahead of time if it will work or not; to what degree should desperate people be allowed to roll the dice on experimental treatments (right to try), and at what point does the FDA step in **once** the treatment is proven to not work.
Off course, had the hydroxychloroquine proponents been honest from the get go (ie "look, we're not sure this hydroxychloroquine thing will work, he have serious doubts, but there's some chance it will work") instead of overselling it, it would have been a different story.
Well certainly hydroxchloroquine does nothing without zinc. It's like a gun without bullets. Did they use zinc in their study? And also hydroxchloroquine works best early in the illness, not once people are hospitalized.
What has benefit at any time is vitamin D-3, and of course high-dose vitamin C, which is required by the government of Shanghai, China. The cure for the Wuhan virus was published in July 1949 by Dr Frederick Klenner of Reidsville, NC, and it seems that only the Chinese who caused this disaster have been smart enough to use it.
