Larry David Says People Who Object to COVID-19 Lockdowns Are 'Idiots'
Government-mandated unemployment is "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to "sit on the couch and watch TV," says the wealthy star of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Larry David has recorded a PSA urging Californians to stay at home (as they are legally required to do, except for essential errands) and thereby avoid catching or transmitting COVID-19. It is pretty funny, until you contemplate the economically privileged assumptions underlying his message.
"I basically want to address the idiots out there," says the co-creator of Seinfeld and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm while sitting in a living room chair. "You know who you are. You're going out. I don't know what you're doing. You're socializing too close. It's not good. You're hurting old people like me. Well, not me. I have nothing to do with you. I'll never see you. But, you know, let's say other old people, who might be your relatives. Who the hell knows?"
In case the health of elderly relatives is not enough of an argument, David offers an added enticement. "The problem is, you're passing up a fantastic opportunity—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—to stay in the house, sit on the couch, and watch TV!" he says. "I mean, I don't know how you're passing that up. Well, maybe because you're not that bright. But here it is: Go home! Watch TV! That's my advice to you." There follows some patter about how "nothing good ever happens outside of the house" and the proper sanitary procedure in the event of a "plumbing emergency" that requires professional attention.
Interpreted as a warning to avoid infecting people who are especially vulnerable to COVID-19, David's advice is unexceptionable, and fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm will find his irascible, condescending manner amusing rather than off-putting. But his assumption that anyone who chafes at Gov. Gavin Newsom's stay-at-home order must be an irresponsible idiot who doesn't care about the welfare of his grandmother ignores the millions of people who have lost their jobs or businesses as a result of the governor's edict and are now struggling to get by.
Even if you believe that the economic burden is justified by the goals of curtailing the epidemic, saving vulnerable people, and preventing hospitals from being overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases, the hardship caused by such aggressive interventions cannot be (or at least should not be) lightly dismissed. By implying that people who are worried about covering their bills because they have been forcibly deprived of their livelihoods are just too stupid to know a good thing when they see it, David shows the hallmark insensitivity of his Curb Your Enthusiasm character, but in this case at the expense of actual human beings who are suffering through no fault of their own. For a celebrity with a net worth of $400 million, it's an easy mistake to make.

I saw somebody else saying "It's a staycation! Enjoy it!" I'm sure the people going broke and on the verge of losing their homes and businesses just need to chill OUT!
He's not talking about people that need to go to work. He is talking about the idiots going to the beach.
Hey idiot, there is no difference between you being alone at home and alone at a beach, except the fresh air.
These state lockdowns are blatantly unconstitutional.
Is there any dumb liberal thought you wont rush to defend?
How are lockdown orders a "liberal thought," you half-educated, inconsequential bigot?
Why do you call them idiots? Because they don't kowtow?
Think of it as a message from George Costanza.
Bingo
Most beaches are fairly big, allowing for sufficient spacing between people visiting. I am appalled at the public caving to the hysteria-reporting "violations" of lock downs, confronting people outside as 'dangerous' (happened to my 83 y.o. mother walking outside alone). Is anyone paying attention to Sweden and Japan-with minimal invasive lock downs these countries don't have significant "pandemics". What are we missing here?
Celebs have a right to opinions; in this case it's a chance for us to think about how they are not living in the same world as most of us and start to ignore them, their 'work' and their influences. Same goes to the media-why give prominence to celebs when so many everyday people are making significant contributions to society in times of great duress.
Larry David: 'I'm alright, Jack!'
I think frightened, rich Jews should stay in their own homes if they are so concerned.
Let those of us who are trying to keep food on the shelves, the lights on, the water flowing, and the hospitals staffed continue in our work. Shut up and leave us alone!
Courage people!
Which one of you guys is Eduardo Moreno?
Aman
weird that you mention he's jewish.
And we should pay attention to some random actor why, exactly?
He’s a deep philosophical thinker.
According to that authority Larry David.
Inflated ego and sense of self worth. It's the same reason all these actors and media types do stupid 30 second Twitter videos about how "we're all in this together" and "we'll get through this" that only 2 people watch.
And I should note that those 2 "people" are actually just the actor refreshing the video.
Larry David is an entitled out of touch moron.
Not to mention his age puts him in a high risk group. If he wants to stay home, I say more power to you Larry. Forcing everyone to your preferred solution is the height of selfishness.
And, by the way, you what would really hurt my elderly parents?
STARVATION!
I, my siblings, and concerned neighbors are all out there making sure they and other seniors have what they need. Larry David can just shut up!
the economically privileged assumptions underlying his entire shtick.
That's because only the economically privileged watch him.
HBO is a first world problem lol.
To the depleted human residue that remains in our desolate backwaters after generations of bright flight have stripped all of the smart, ambitious young people from those can't-keep-up communities, anyone with a fully functional television qualifies as "economically privileged."
You're talking about Seattle, San Francisco, LA, and NYC, of course.
I've heard so many people saying basically this. And they say "Hey, they are going to get unemployment, and the Federal government is sending them a check."
I live near some well to do areas- where everyone works at fancy restaurants and stores. These people earn a living off of tips and commissions. The government and unemployment are not going to make them whole.
Likewise, Unemployment only pays so much- it doesn't replace your complete salary if you were a high earner. Hopefully higher wage earners have savings put aside, but people in high living expense areas have higher earning. What may be a very good wage in middle america barely pays the rent in New York or California.
Now I normally say to people paying a lot on the coasts that it is the cost of living on the coasts. But here we have the federal government and other out of touch bureaucrats forcing a single solution on the entire country. People in rural communities shouldn't even have to do this, and the make-good measures don't do enough to support people in urban areas. It is one big clusterfuck.
There is also the unseen (by these privileged idiots) fact that people staying home are not producing what other people need.
Yeah it comes from the misunderstanding of what wealth is. Producing things is creating wealth. Cashing a check of made-up money from the government doesn't increase wealth.
"Cashing a check of made-up money from the government doesn’t increase wealth."
Given that it was taken from someone at gun-point, it already has a lower value than if it had been freely exchanged.
Not these checks, they were created out of thin air. They'll be paid off when the dollar crashes, through inflation.
They also will be funded partly by diminished subsidies for rural and southern backwaters after tiny, clingered fingers are removed from the levers of American executive authority and the backlash begins.
it doesn’t replace your complete salary if you were a high earner.
If you make $100k, it is about 1/4 of your regular earnings, and in many places in CA, $100k is barely enough to afford the outrageous rents of $3k a month for 1800 sq ft. I was looking at taking a job near the coast and would not have gone for less than $140k. If I had taken the job in residential construction I was contemplating, I would be either bankrupt by year end, left without any retirement savings or both.
Like Cusack he's out of touch and doesn't give a shit about anyone else. Also out of work, but when you're a rich douche you can afford to be a selfish jerk.
Another asshole who thinks civilization begins and ends in Manhattan.
So true, Unicorn. The man removed any doubts and confirmed for all his innate arrogance and stupidity by opening his mouth. He is a shonda.
New York's alright if you like saxophones.
That was just Larry David doing another Bernie Sanders impression and he nailed it with a near-perfect condescending attitude.
to "sit on the couch and watch TV," says the wealthy star of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Well that's tone-deaf AF (as the young people say).
Was he in character when he said it?
Was he in character when he said it?
You're giving him too much credit as an actor and a human being.
It is easy to sit home and watch TV when you're worth half-a-billion dollars, isn't it?
These fucking celebrities are so tone deaf.
Quit whining, clinger.
Ironic.
Pray we never find you, because nobody will once we do. Boo! You trailer trash faggot.
You know those dirty homeless people watching porn at the library? That's him.
Open wider, Geraje. Your betters are not through with you. Not nearly.
Thanks for your obsequious compliance.
How much is he donating for people that can’t afford to sit at home and not work?
Impotent old man likes to sit on couch.
Just another day of virtue signaling in hollywood. Its not a real PSA until Alisa Miliano, King James and Dave Grohl are in on it.
Did I miss the part where he has converted all his assets to cash and donated it to a food bank?
Free will does not exist. Some of you were created to suck and there's nothing we can do about it.
millions of people who have lost their jobs or businesses as a result of the governor's edict and are now struggling to get by.
People are not "struggling' in this scenario, they are unable to "get by", by any reasonable standard. The checks from the government will pay the rent late this month and then next month millions of perfectly healthy people are SOL.
In the immortal words of William Shakespeare, "What a piece of shit is a man!"
Fuck Larry David and Gavin Newsome in the ear holes with an icepick.
You should have chosen an education, clinger. Maybe some savings. A marketable skill. Worked on reducing that counterproductive anti-social anger.
He should have. But teachers and universities have failed to provide an education or marketable skills. And progressives and Democrats, sadly, strongly encourage people to just sit at home and watch TV. Just like this guy.
What a fucking idiot. Has this ass clown ever done real work? And lived without savings, on a budget that barely covers rent and food?
I think we should help Larry learn. Take away his money, put him and an old B&W TV in a rental apartment (with a mean landlord), and tell him his shift at the Home Depot starts at 6am.
"Has this ass clown ever done real work?"
No.
Is anybody surprised that Larry David is out of touch and looks down on the common folk?
Are they at all familiar with his work?
This really isn't newsworthy
Because someone is good at making people laugh doesn't necessarily mean he understands anything else. It works that way with music and acting, too. You wouldn't know it by the attention people pay to their opinions, but there are plenty of things that celebrities don't know, and when the next time the unemployment numbers come out, these celebrities will be eating their words.
All the shit media people used to think people cared about won't matter anymore if and when the unemployment rate goes into double digits--and there's no end in sight. The left is saying so much stupid shit right now, I'm starting to worry about the reaction to it coming back to bite them so hard that honest libertarians will feel it's necessary to come to their rescue in the not too distant future.
I stood up for the Constitution when people wanted to torture terrorists, and I'll stand up for the rights of people like Larry David, too--even if and when he comes to be hated as much as Americans hated Al Qaeda in the wake of 9/11. And, yeah, celebrities, you're dancing on the last nerve of people who are about to lose their jobs, lose their homes, lose their standard of living, and get sucked into an economic abyss.
Remember what happened to Hollywood during the Red Scare? Well human nature hasn't changed since then. Scared people are dangerous, and we're about to see more people who are more scared than we've seen in a long, long time.
He's clearly doing a bit
Why the hate for Larry? I understand he ditched his limo and now walks everywhere, out of concern for the 35,000+ who die on our highways every year. Just like he no longer has armed security, or uses any more electricity than the average schmuck.
Good! Far better than the asshole bigot!
Fuck the government and fuck these Lefty pricks trying to prevent people from going out.
This is going to backfire so hard on Lefties, it will be so fun to tell them that I told them so.
You figure this is going to turn the tide of the culture war?
Disaffected, anti-social malcontents are going to rise and conquer (or, maybe, become relevant)?
The properly educated, marketably skilled, modern, accomplished, and progressive Americans -- with their fancy standard English, college degrees, and elitist communities and jobs -- are finally going to be made to bow to their slack-jawed, superstitious, white, rural, right-wing masters?
That's what you keep hoping for, isn't it? And you're right: it's not going to happen. Socialism, progressivism, and "social democracy" are dead; they have committed suicide.
This is really it with the Rev. He's all about bowing to Masters, dominance and submission, obsequious compliance, and the perverse fantasies he clings to that flow from this fetish.
What's really detestable about the Rev is that he dreams of a world where everyone is either a gimp or owns one.
yikes the comments on the Larry David vid are profoundly stupid. One gem and I’m paraphrasing;
"We have the opportunity to save the world by sitting at home on the couch and watching TV. Let's not screw this up."
Yeaaaa how about you are a dickless twat.

"... sit on the couch, and watch TV!"
Sorry, couches and TVs have been classified as non-essential, comrade.
I don't recall him mentioning the "lockdown" stuff at all.
He just said people who aren't "social distancing" are idiots.
And he's right.
He's right as far as he is concerned: a geriatric wealthy guy who works for fun.
Most people have to make a living. If you're under 50, your risk of serious disease from COVID-19 is 1:100 and death is less than 1:1000. OTOH, your risk of severe financial problems if you don't work for a few months is nearly 100%.
There's no shortage of wealthy celebrities trying to act like quarantines are a government sponsored vacation. So easy when you don't have to work, make money to pay bills or find food.
Actors who comment on medical issues are idiots.
Mr. Wannabe Sanders here is more worried that he's gonna be affected by the virus then all the other people who are actually being affected by it. Come on you authoritarian fuck, where's your sense of the greater good?
Opiate of the asses.
And good God, watch TV? Encouraging people to stay home is one thing, but pushing that mental cancer on them is worse than irresponsible. How about: pick up an instrument? Learn a language online? Get some e-books on your phone? Get some yard work done and start a vegetable garden if you can. Build freakin model airplanes, take a shot at poetry or learn how to cook. Try your hand at silkscreening, delve into spreadsheet functions, attempt to fix some things around the house, or learn how to change your own oil, or sing harmony.
Anything but the idiot box. Free yourself from paying attention to jesters like him.
It isn't that I think money is worth more than human life. I don't think that. My issue is that the temporary ban on social interaction is just temporary. It's main benefit will be to delay the time when the elderly/sick need to go into the ICU and get ventilators. Again, it's about slowing the spread of the disease. Thus, if Covid19 is still in the population and more than likely it going to be when the shut down is over, if someone hasn't received a vacine or is immune from already having it, they will have it and then spread Covid19 all over the place.
So, I still keep thinking that more resources should be devoated to the at risk population, preventing them from getting the disease perhaps entirely until a vacine is developed. Again, we are just delaying the spread which has some value but still means the expectation is that everyone in the US will get Covid19 sooner or later until there is a vacine and there probably wont' be a vacine for a year or more.
If Covid19 mutates until something stronger in the meantime, children and healthy adults that currently are not at serious risk, would become at greater risk. Thus, children and healthy adults who already had the milder version and had at least a kind of immunity would be likely to do better than those that didn't have the disease at all.
So, instead of scolding healthy people for wanting to have a life, why not use the trillions of dolalrs that are being lose by healthy adults not working, and use those on special resources for the at risk groups.
Perhaps, the current system is the best and the one I'm suggesting is flawed in ways I can't see. However, considering the many many bad decisons that were made over Covid19 from the start, as in not buying test kits from China and having really bad initial test kits, but there are many more after that, it is hard to trust the current system when logic indicates that as soon as people go back to work the death toll for the elderly will go up again after a temporary lull so it isn't really so much about preventing the elderly from death but just trying to make sure there are ventilators there, but that doesn't seem an ideal situation to me.
And the way I've read it explained doesn't really explain this aspect of it. Rather, the media is making it seem as if not socialzing now will prevent the at risk from getting the disease ever, but that is not what seems like the most likely outcome to me.
Stupidity is pretty common in Hollywood.
However, if he thinks it such a great deal, I welcome him to liquidate all his assets and redistribute them to those who are layed off.
He, of course, is welcome to keep an amount equal to x number of weeks of unemployment. Just to be fair.
Well, I guess Larry David can afford to stay at home and not work for a while. but many of us are living paycheck-to-paycheck, and if we can't work, we don't have money. Only some types of work are suitable for work-at-home.
You don’t know me and I don’t know you, but fuck your old man.
On a side note, how did this dude make $400 mil? I’ve never even heard of him (which isn’t saying much, I stopped watching tv after 9/11.
Who's idiot now?
