To Slow Coronavirus, Trump Bans Travel From Continental Europe for 30 Days
Americans and those traveling from the U.K. will be exempted.

President Donald Trump announced a 30-day ban on travel from continental Europe Wednesday as part of the U.S. government's coronavirus pandemic response.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said that the federal government would halt all travel from Europe beginning on Friday. Americans, visitors from the U.K., and passengers who had undergone special screening would still be allowed to enter the country.
"These restrictions will be adjusted subject to conditions on the ground," said Trump. "There will be exemptions for Americans who have undergone appropriate screenings, and these prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo, but other things as we get approval."
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf clarified that Trump's order would only apply to foreign citizens.
The action @POTUS is taking to deny entry to foreign nationals who have been in coronavirus-affected areas will keep Americans safe & save lives. These are not easy decisions but they are required. I will issue guidance within 48 hours outlining details.https://t.co/KYXE7JKswC pic.twitter.com/zgi6r5FoZq

The president's remarks suggested that trade with Europe might halt as well, although his meaning was not entirely clear. The White House later clarified that the ban would not impact trade and goods, according to Bloomberg News.
Trump also faulted Europe for failing to limit travel from China and bragged that he had not made the same mistake (though of course, the coronavirus still eventually made its way from China to U.S. shores).
"I will never hesitate to take any necessary steps to protect the lives, health, and safety of American people," said Trump.
This extreme measure on the part of the president is a sign that his administration is no longer treating the coronavirus pandemic like a hoax cooked up by the mainstream media to hurt his re-election odds. But it's worth wondering whether a European travel ban—imposed unilaterally by the executive branch—is actually a prudent measure at this point, given that there is already a coronavirus outbreak within U.S. borders. And the U.K., from which travel is not restricted, has hundreds of cases as well.
In other coronavirus news, actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have reportedly contracted the disease, and the NBA has suspended its season indefinitely. Government officials and organizers are canceling conferences, parades, concerts, and other mass gatherings of people. Practicing social distancing—avoiding large crowds—remains the best method for all people to help slow the spread of the disease and flatten the curve.
Update: Additional information about the travel ban's impact on trade and goods was added to this article.

It took over 3 years, but finally!
Haha. I'm a single issue voter and that issue is a eyetalian fucked my wife. I want them out.
This is good. I'm pleasantly surprised by trump here. I don't know if this is an effective measure. I'm not saying it isn't, I just don't know, but I'm happy he's taking it seriously now.
In other news, stock market is going to be ugly tomorrow.
He is not taking this seriously at all. Or perhaps he is simply dumber than a cucumber.
He is still pretending that this problem is 'out there' somewhere. This sort of exclusion from outside only works until you start having community transmission inside. We are weeks beyond that.
The problem is that at this point the only countries that are either oblivious as to the problem they have or overwhelmed by it are Turkey, and presumably the Third World. Those are the countries where a travel ban might work but would be pointless precisely because their reported numbers are lower than ours and their real numbers probably are too.
My guess is that the immediate response by everyone else is going to be to prohibit Americans from entering. And medically that unfortunately makes more sense than the reverse.
Meant to type Italy as well but they are obviously already banned.
South Park Predicts Coronavirus (SARS 2.0)
I will just leave this here.
The white man's way to cure the illness is Campbell's chicken noodle soup, DayQuil, and Sprite, and hands the mixture to the people of South Park, who all recover.
The only ad that needs to be run is to say if you're over 70 stay home.
But no. We get panic like JFree.
The end is nigh, jfree!
Nigh!
He is making this decision for ONE reason. The US is about to blow by Germany, France, and Spain in the number of cases we have and he wants to blame something on them before we pass them and that window closes.
Since the US is many times larger, and substantially more effective at testing, it's hardly surprising that we have more cases in absolute terms, as a country. Actual prevalence of the virus in the US is an order of magnitude lower in the US than in Europe.
And it's likely going to stay that way, due to the US preference for commuting by car and suburban living. Urbanites are at risk, but those tend to be younger anyway.
We need to get more Americans out of their cars and into public transit.
"and substantially more effective at testing,"
Not as far as I've heard. Bureaucratic incompetence has gotten in the way of a lot of needed testing.
That said, I agree that restricting travel from areas where the virus is more common than in the US is just an obvious thing to do, even if it IS here already. Just because your roof is leaking doesn't mean that you open the windows in a bad storm.
I spent February in Thailand, nervously thinking of coming home — they got hit harder than we did earlier. And we are behind Thailand in testing and other health measures, way behind — it was really shocking to come home. The stats I've seen have us WAY behind Europe, which is way behind much of Asia, on testing.
You can tell right at the airport, we're not as serious or prepared as Thailand was a month earlier. Same in Taiwan, which was my connection. Both countries tackled it early, I think got testing rolled out quite a while ago, and brought it under control.
Good thing that extension cord of yours reaches all the way to your closet.
These aren't decisions based on presence or absence, they are decisions based on probabilities, prevalence, and transmission rates.
Since the virus is much more widespread in Europe than in the US, this sort of exclusion can be quite effective.
In other words, you don't know what you're talking about. As usual.
Thank goodness we can rely on Dr. NOYB2 to correct the misleading information being peddled by public health experts, credential-flaunting scientists, and other elitists.
Arty, you should take preventative measures to ensure you don't contract the virus
Commit suicide right away. Only then can you be sure.
Shitsy Shitler, drinking Shitsy Kool-Aid in a spiraling vortex of darkness, cannot or will not see the Light… It’s a VERY sad song! Kinda like this…
He’s a real Kool-Aid Man,
Sitting in his Kool-Aid Land,
Playing with his Kool-Aid Gland,
Has no thoughts that help the people,
He wants to turn them all to sheeple!
On the sheeple, his Master would feast,
Master? A disaster! Just the nastiest Beast!
Kool-Aid man, please listen,
You don’t know, what you’re missin’,
Kool-Aid man, better thoughts are at hand,
The Beast, to LEAVE, you must COMMAND!

Such a stupid post.
Arty is just upset that he realizes his 'betters' are Joe Biden voters.
Since the virus is much more widespread in Europe than in the US, this sort of exclusion can be quite effective.
We have every reason to believe that we don't currently have an accurate picture of the prevalence of the virus within the US, due to delays in testing and Trump's mismanagement of state-level information sharing. If keeping a cruise ship offshore in order to "keep our numbers down" doesn't clue you into Trump's game here, then I don't know what will.
The only question is whether he'll be able to continue to suppress information indefinitely and continue to paint a rosier-than-accurate picture of what's happening here. Do you suppose we'll see a spike in "flu" deaths this year?
They are all out to get you...
Dude, really? = He is not taking this seriously at all. Or perhaps he is simply dumber than a cucumber.
I have never heard of a travel ban due to quarantine. First time in a half-century. That was put into place with China, Iran, South Korea, EU. That is very serious.
Maybe it is me, but I am looking at an enormous mobilization effort here in the US, headed by VP Pence. Waived co-pays by insurers, 8B aid package, consultation with Wall Street, and aid for displaced employees. This is happened pretty quick (by Fed govt standards).
Maybe you can tell us what you would have done differently that would have lead to a different, and superior result?
I think POTUS Trump is doing what we can reasonably expect.
Well, Obama was able to lower the rising oceans, so why can’t Trump cure Covid cuck?
Read about Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand (where I was last month). Way ahead of us. When you look at the testing numbers, we're basically a developing country, except not in the same league with Vietnam or Thailand either.
As a short answer, we should have done what Taiwan did. We could even have responded a little slower and been ok.
This didn't actually have to spread. A lot of East and South East Asia brought it under control, without draconian measures.
Completely unacceptable. Koch / Reason libertarianism insists that any person on the planet can immigrate to the US at any time. Even if the #TrumpVirus had a 99% mortality rate, I would not set aside my open borders advocacy for even one day.
#NoBanNoWall
This was quite funny, especially the #trumpvirus. It got too over the top by the end (you could have used a slightly lower percentage).
#DotardRecession2020
use it
DRINK!
Look man... maybe you need to think about getting some treatment, like AA
So can a person from, say, Belgium take a train into London and then fly from there to the US? Or can a person from Ukraine take a low cost flight into London and then take a regular airliner to the US? Why is the UK excepted from the ban? Or can't people drive to Istanbul and fly from there?
I think it’s a political move, and not a public safety move.
A proverbial finger to the EU, with a wink and a nod to the now free Britain.
"So can a person from, say, Belgium take a train into London and then fly from there to the US?"
No. You have to prove that you haven't been in one of the affected countries within 14 days prior to your entry into the US. I mean, your Belgian could get here two weeks after he got to London. But not before.
Yes they can. And the UK wasn't included because foreigners who speak English aren't as scary and their PM wasn't making fun of him at the last get together.
March Madness has taken on new meaning.
United States of Neurosis
Debates, primaries—and the election-are cancelled.
Democracy is on hold until future notice.
Why is SARS 2 worse than SARS?
SARS was a pussy virus.
TrumpVirus is the greatest in history. It bounds over walls and won't pay for shit.
NBA suspends season.
Just a matter of days before MLB does with all the Mexican Rapists they have from all over the place.
#DotardRecession2020
So the winning city won't be set ablaze after the championship?
"NBA suspends season"
Some sports websites are taking this quite seriously, asking what effect this will have on the salary cap.
And, oh yeah, washyourhandssocialdistancing ...
So you're a pederast and a racist. Figures.
I can see why you hate Trump...he's aggressively prosecuted your type.
Practicing social distancing—avoiding large crowds—remains the best method for all people to help slow the spread of the disease
Hmm. No wonder we're seeing all these Facebook ads now.
Time to hit the golf course.
Good idea, if you catch the virus you'll be able to find a doctor.
Not content to implement a Muslim ban, President Donald J. Trump has now doubled down on bigotry and imposed a Christian and secular humanist ban. The shadow of the swastika is spreading over this once great nation.
Don't be so pessimistic: it looks like Bernie isn't going to make it.
(And, yes, the political program and rhetoric of Bernie Sanders is pretty much like that of 1920's European fascists.)
This extreme measure on the part of the president is a sign that his administration is no longer treating the coronavirus pandemic like a hoax
He never did.
He said that things like what you did with this statement was part of their latest hoax. Lying about what he's doing.
And it is.
Robby should know better than to quote Politico on anything.
ENB was repeating the "Trump called the virus a hoax" hoax for the last two Reason Roundups as well.
DOL also said it. But not really. Or maybe he did? He’s not really sure. But either way Orange Man Bad. Yeah, he definitely said Orange Man Bad.
"Robby should know better..."
What he knows does not dictate what he does. Robby is just another media fucktard clinging to a dying industry while self identifying with Goebbels worthy lines like that one. He and the rest of them cannot lose their jobs soon enough.
No fair, I don't want to die from a virus, I want to die from a heart attack while making love to [insert name of well-known actress].
You know what 85 percent of men who die while having sex are doing?
I hope this isn't going where I think it's going.
Well, if your answer was "cheating on their wives," you'd be a winner!
Well, I didn't know that. Interesting. Whatever study confirmed this should be circulated in the swingers clubs.
And never mind what I thought the answer to your question was.
Counting the sheep?
Hitler?
Nonstopdrivel, meet Rebel Wilson.
Does it have anything to do with gerbils?
If you can score Rita Wilson (Hanks), you might be able to do both
I omitted names from my joke in a rare and atypical attempt to limit the offensiveness.
I thought it was quite restrained by my standards.
I was thinking more along the lines of [name omitted] or [name omitted], or [name omitted] - hubba hubba!
“No fair, I don’t want to die from a virus, I want to die from a heart attack while making love to [Rosie O’Donnel].”
Gross.
Apparently Tom Hanks (filming in Australia) has it now

Look at me! I’m a victim!
Ya know, I think the joke about never travel with Tom Hanks due to how his movies go just became real life.
I was able to find 4 rolls of toilet paper today. My ass will stay clean for now.
RACISTS!!!11!!!1!1!!! Oh, wait ...
You have to be an imbecile and live in a leftist filter bubble to believe that Trump "treated the coronavirus pandemic like a hoax cooked up by the mainstream media to hurt his re-election odds". Oh, wait, that's you!
Look, some of us are taking a while to get used to this new standard where we aren't supposed to pay any attention whatsoever to what the president does and says.
The problem is that you are not paying attention to what Trump says; you are paying attention to the self-serving propaganda of authoritarians.
Trump is on record accusing the mainstream media and Democrats of exaggerating the threat of the coronavirus as part of an elaborate "hoax" to spook markets and oust him from office.
The coverage of the coronavirus has been breathless and wall-to-wall, but it hasn't been "hoax"-like. That might annoy the likes of you, but it makes a certain amount of sense when countries like China are imprisoning millions of people in their own homes and countries like Italy are quarantining themselves.
//The coverage of the coronavirus has been breathless and wall-to-wall//
That should be a hint, a large hint, that drumming up hysteria may be ... just may be ... deliberate.
The incessant coverage and neurotic reactions are unnecessary.
That’ll fix it.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said that the federal government would halt all travel from Europe beginning on Friday. Americans, visitors from the U.K., and passengers who had undergone special screening would still be allowed to enter the country.
Then he didn't ban all travel, did he? He only banned the foreigners he doesn't like, the ones who don't speak English or the people from the countries whose leaders have slighted him.
COVID-19 (SARS-nCov-2) is a very serious public health threat. That is not scare-mongering. That is objective reality. There are things we can do to lower the risk. In tribute to my distant ancestors, I put these in the form of:
The 10 Commandments to Avoid Getting COVID-19.
One, Thou shalt wash thy hands! (your Mother was right!)
Two, Thou shalt cough into a tissue, immediately toss tissue into trash. And thou shalt immediately do commandment #1.
Three, Thou shalt not hug, kiss, touch thy face, or handshake in public
Four, Thou shalt avoid large crowds
Five, Thou shalt avoid mass transit, planes, trains, and cruise ships
Six, Thou shalt change thy shopping routine to off-hours, when there are few people around
Seven, Thou shalt ditch the sit-down restaurants for take-out
Eight, Remember to stock up on food to ride out a month; thou canst eat beans & rice for a month. (but it sort of sucks)
Nine, Thou shalt obtain ingredients for homemade hand sanitizer. Very easy to make
And Ten, Thou shalt use thy brain and think! This is your greatest asset.
Seriously. People don't even do the basics right. They cough straight into the air or into their hands. Wtf?
Plus what's this thing of removing your shoes on an airplane and going to the bathroom in socks?
Vomitville.

Does it include America jr. Canada?
They never treated the disease like a hoax, and fuck you for lying about it, Soave. You're a hack.
Got two rock shows planned for April. Hope they aren't cancelled.
The first thing I thought of when I heard this was: "But travel from South Korea is still fine?"
I know Italy is problem, but so is South Korea. Even discounting China, why are we walling off Europe but treating Asia as perfectly safe?
For the record, I don't think there should be this style of travel bans. But given there are, why the focus on Europe?
We have military bases in Korea and lots of economic interests. Korean cars and Kpop and stuff.
The last time Europe was relevant in America was in the revolutionary war when the French gave us military aid. Nobody here cares about Europe, you'd have to go to specialty stores to find marzipan.
The foreign game here is played by the Mexicans and Asians. Where can you find boba AND Mexican food only minutes from each other? In the USA.
The European travel ban was solely for domestic consumption. The virus has been raging in China since December and maybe before. What did they do in this time period? They said it was good thing that China was being hit hard by the virus, that it would help American companies - Wilbur Ross. Did they plan, work on test kits, plan for our hospitals being overrun. Nope, they sat back and watched it happen. Complacent and dumb as a lamb walking towards its slaughter.
Hey, they don't believe in the concept of government - except of course for the companies are now crying that they need taxpayer dollars because their business has dried up and the stocks down. The worst fear - the bonus payouts will be small. All those stock buybacks down the toilet.
Now we need helicopter money to rescue these companies. The citizens are going to crowd out the hospitals and since they all seem to need respirators and we do not have enough, they will decide at the hospital who lives and dies.
Just please save the stock market and Trump's sagging fortunes.
