Yale Will Eliminate a Beloved Introductory Art Class for Being Too White, Male, and Western
"It's a disservice to undergrads," said one student.

Enrollment has swelled for Yale University's introductory art history course, which covers "the Renaissance to the present." That's because the school plans to eliminate the popular class after the spring.
According to The Yale Daily News, the art department has decided that the class might make some students uncomfortable due to the "overwhelming" whiteness, maleness, and straightness of the artists who comprise the Western canon (though that last label may be dubious). Indeed, the focus on Western art is "problematic," course instructor Tim Barringer told the student newspaper.
"I want all Yale students (and all residents of New Haven who can enter our museums freely) to have access to and to feel confident analyzing and enjoying the core works of the western tradition," said Barringer. "But I don't mistake a history of European painting for the history of all art in all places."
In its final iteration, the course will "consider art in relation to questions of gender, class and race and discuss its involvement with Western capitalism," according to the latest syllabus. Art's relationship to climate change will also be a "key theme."
"I'm really looking forward to seeing what works the students come up with to counteract or undermine my own narratives," said Barringer.
Art students who wish to master the Western canon will still find plenty of other courses that satisfy their interests. But the removal of the introductory course makes it difficult for non-majors with a casual interest in the subject to study it.
"My biggest critique of the decision is that it's a disservice to undergrads," one student, Mahlon Sorensen, told The Yale Daily News. "If you get rid of that one, all-encompassing course, then to understand the Western canon of art, students are going to have to take multiple art history courses. Which is all well and good for the art history major, but it sucks for the rest of us."
It has become more common in recent years for small cabals of students to rebel against liberal arts curricula that they feel are too focused on Western artists, authors, and thinkers. Students at Reed College, for instance, successfully pressured educators to disband an introductory humanities course. In that case, the activists demanded that all European texts be removed and replaced by non-European books as a form of reparations "for Humanities 110's history of erasing the histories of people of color, especially black people." Yale's art department seems to be changing with the times.
It's good to include more perspectives and to ensure that a liberal arts education is not excessively focused on Europe. But diversity by addition is vastly preferable to diversity by subtraction. When a university eliminates an introductory art class because a tiny number of ideologues object to the whiteness and maleness of it all, it feels like they are declining to teach history because some people don't like what happened. The West's outsized influence on the events of the last several centuries may very well be problematic, but that doesn't mean it isn't real.

REMEMBER unreason when the Lefties were going after Civil War statutes and memorial markers?
It's almost like when you give keys to the Lefty lunatics, they run all around the USA looking for Americans stuff to tear down.
I wonder if the real target is....The United States of America is a very White, Male, Western, and Hetero creation.
An interesting take. I had never thought of all those statues as anything but the same kind of industrial decoration mandated by the government ("1% of construction budgets shall be for art"). such as when Concord CA put up a bunch of what looked like huge knitting needles down a median strip.
There's a difference in art created by people who want to create it, and people creating industrial decoration by budget, and I've never thought of statues of politicians and generals as anything but industrial decoration. The Lincoln Memorial, for instance: big, somewhat unusual, but art? The Iwo Jima statue -- Washington Monument -- FDR -- MLK Jr -- I do not think of any of them as "art" in the same sense as the Mona Lisa or Rembrandt etc, even though many or most of them were created for a patron.
I once had an argument with an avowed communist ("not a Stalinist") about art. She wanted the government to pay artists just for being artists. I asked who decided who was an artist. She said artists themselves decided they were artists. I said I would go around painting circles everywhere and call myself a artist. She said that's not art. I said I'm the artist, I decide. She simply could not accept that. Could not see her own hypocrisy.
Thus it is was statues of generals put up by politicians. They are not art to my eyes, just industrial decoration.
" I said I would go around painting circles everywhere and call myself a artist."
It's already been done. I met an artist in the middle of his work, traveling the globe and spray painting circles in strategic places in national capitals. He claimed to have already done places like North Korea and wasn't finished with the world when I met him. This is an example of conceptual art, which exists more in the head than in physical reality.
"and I’ve never thought of statues of politicians and generals as anything but industrial decoration."
Didn't the British put up a statue of a pregnant, nude thalidomide victim in Trafalgar Square, not too far from one-armed Admiral Nelson? They've never thought the same way about statues since.
IIRC a so-called artist used duct tape to tape a banana to the wall and it sold for over $100K.
There’s a difference in art created by people who want to create it, and people creating industrial decoration by budget
Wallace Stevens wrote a famous essay about this called "The American Sublime," drawing on Coleridge's distinction between "imagination" and "fancy." Stevens' essay is specifically about the statue of Jackson across from the White House, and its failure to represent anything from either reality or imagination - i.e. a work of 'fancy,' not 'art.'
That's the sort of thing you tend to get with 'public' art.
Michaelangelo didn't want to do the Sistine chapel. Probably was commissioned to do all his works. So public works aren't art what?
Thus it is was statues of generals put up by politicians. They are not art to my eyes, just industrial decoration.
Have you ever sculpted anything? Do you have the slightest idea what you're talking about? Do you even BEGIN to have a clue as to how hard it is to sculpt a likeness? A realistic likeness?
Those statues are art. Some of them amazing art.
"Some of them amazing art."
I always feel shortchanged in the horse dick department.
You kind of are one, so there's that.
"The United States of America is a very White, Male, Western, and Hetero creation."
Also the home of the piss christ.
“The United States of America is a very White, Male, Western, and Hetero creation.”

which alters what he said not at all.
Christ was an Easterner. And kinda faggy, too.
“Art’s relationship to climate change”.
It’s the paint fumes!
Yesterday while I was driving I flipped to NPR where someone was introducing a piece on how climate change is affecting tennis.
Yes, tennis.
Peak derp?
No yet. We have not seen "definitive" studies linking climate change to gender. Or Nazis.
Or Nazis
A lot of climate change activists are ideological brownshirts.
It’s coming. Saw an article a while back saying that climate change is worse for minorities, and POC.
Everything is so terrible and unfair.
Saw an article a while back saying that climate change is worse for minorities, and POC.
Which is odd, since global warming is happening primarily in the arctic regions, while the tropics have been largely unimpacted.
It's no coincidence that the people who are freaking out the most are the Swedes.
I'd think the gas chambers would have been a big no-no. But maybe ending 6 million mouth breathers made it a net positive? (Redundant but obligatory /sarc)
No such thing as peak derp.
About 15 years ago some hack sports writer here in Montreal wrote a stupid article about how there wasn't going to be any more outdoor skating rinks and that it was going to hurt Canada's development of hockey players leading the country to not dominate the sport anymore.
Literally none of that happened. In fact, Canada continues to excel and win major tournaments while you can't throw a rock without hitting a hockey rink (Twain once said of Montreal you can't throw a rock without breaking a Church window when he visited the city).
Just this morning I went out for a quick skate to shoot the puck around.
Talk about a climate change alarmist article that didn't age well.
Some body pitched the idea of refrigerated outdoor ice rinks in Montreal as a solution, only one or two million dollars each; they weren't built because the honest cost estimates were seven or eight million each. (What's "boondoggle" in French?)
L'aubaine de chien.
"you can’t throw a rock without hitting a hockey rink"
You don't throw rocks. You release them. Curling is still the only winter sport which drinking beer is acceptable. Just try playing hockey with an ale in your hand.
Someone should throw rocks at your pretentious head.
Why? I might get injured.
The West's outsized influence on the events of the last several centuries may very well be problematic, but that doesn't mean it isn't real.
Reality is now problematic.
How is it problematic? That is my real question. If other cultures are producing things worthy of note and discussion then why not include those things?
A class on the art of Western culture does not include art from other cultures as its focus.
In truth, relatively few cultures had "art for art's sake". Not because those other cultures were lesser cultures, but because they had not attained the affluence necessary for the production of art as a livelihood. A market for art needs to exist. Sometimes it's a free market, sometimes it's a royal court or its supported temple. But you need a market for fine art before fine art will be created. Other cultures had art, but did not have any professional artists. Which limited the development of their artistic skillsets.
Which is why the great art of the world mostly comes from Western, Chinese, and Japanese cultures. And even there mostly from the patronage of state actors. The common person didn't consume fine art until the modern era.
And I'm sure Yale teaches at least a couple of courses on modern art that samples the entire world.
"Which is why the great art of the world mostly comes from Western, Chinese, and Japanese cultures."
Pablo Picasso is widely seen as the foremost painter of the 20th century. He drew extensively on (supposedly non-existent) African art. The influence is quite evident if you look at his paintings with an informed eye.
Then Picasso is a cultural appropriator and has to go.
Epic Rap Battles of History - Picasso vs. Bob Ross
I'm dead????
Pablo Picasso is widely seen as the foremost painter of the 20th century. He drew extensively on (supposedly non-existent) African art. The influence is quite evident if you look at his paintings with an informed eye.
Is it that you just can't read?
He didn't say that there was no African art. He said that there wasn't really a lot of art for art's sake. And he's right.
What foolishness! There has always been plenty of art in Africa. Just oil on canvas was never the preferred media. It was carved wooden masks that caught Pablo's eye. His 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' of 1907 is probably the most famous example.
You ought to visit the Picasso museum in Barcelona. There are several rooms of his line drawings from his later years. Almost all are of cunts. Not whole women, just the genitalia.
My god you are such a pretentious low-middle brow ass.
A class on the art of Western culture does not include art from other cultures as its focus.
^ This.
It's the transformation of our culture from a local one to a global one.
When we were just a country in the world, it was okay to study our own heritage. Now that we have pretensions to being the seat of the One World Government, our curricula must represent All People Everywhere.
That explains a lot.
Yes. That’s it. The paradox our of success as a nation. We want everyone to feel included so they can be part of our world system and not feel bad about it.
Reality has always been problematic to those with delusions or agenda. From organized religion to organized societies, reality (if perceived by the masses) can really fuck up the most righteous plans.
We have to pay the price for having blown everybody else of the water?
Call it out for what it is. Anti-white racism and anti-western bigotry. Why libertarians choose to not defend western culture is beyond me. Diversity is not a strength when it undermines what is good about a society
This is precisely what it is.
Erase the past. Then we wonder why a majority of millennials think communism is ok.
Fat, illiberal, drunk, ignorant and stupid isn't a way to go through life.
I don't think quoting a movie with a young Donald Sutherland is a good way to get the attention of someone under 30.
Lol. Fuck 'em. They can go and learn.
He was in "The Hunger Games" movies. My early 20s daughters know who he is.
If ignorance of Animal House becomes a thing, I pray for the collapse of humanity into eternal darkness with a steel boot on its face, forever.
What about night putting?
Just... putting. At night?
That's one of the most puzzling contradictions in the Progressive book of prayer. They challenge the legacy of the people and institutions who delivered us into enlightened liberalism, and instead promote people and cultures who define anti-liberal ethos. Where does this mental illness come from?
Where does this mental illness come from?
Anger that Fully Automated Gay Space Communism hasn't come to fruition.
Rampant narcissism epidemic.
The Judeo-Christian tradition is very guilt driven. Remove god from the scene and that guilt gets transferred to society.
Who says it's not? Just because Reason reports on a story, it does NOT mean it agrees with the subject of that story. Way way too many reasonoids get confused on that point.
It's quite clear from the context that Robby Soave disapproved of what this Yale professor is doing.
"Why libertarians choose to not defend western culture is beyond me."
I wonder what you mean by "defend western culture". If you mean oppose free trade, hate on immigrants, listen to Sean Hannity, and vote for Trump, then nah.
I'd try again.
With less MSNBC talking points.
And with more love. Put more oomph into it. Make us believe. Like when Michael told Kate he didn't kill Carlo.
Diversity is not a strength when it undermines what is good about a society
And erasing stuff rather than adding stuff =/= "diversity," anyway.
You're just not paying attention (also, math is raciss).
Good.
#DiversityAboveAll
Nothing lasts forever, especially not prestige brands. Think about the expensive luxury carmakers Dusenberg and Cord, for example. Yale has long enjoyed the position of being the Dusenberg of college education. But it sounds like that glorious rep is circling the drain. The difference is that they are doing it to themselves.
George W. Bush is Yale Alum.
That is all you need to know about the lack of education quality at that school.
To be fair, he received Cs at the school back when a C from Yale actually *meant* something....
Robby, bello, now do you understand why we mock your 'to be sure' shtick?
The progressive left is seeking to undermine the enter Western identity.
I thought we also mocked his silly hair.
Next up, Rico grows a man bun.
"But I don't mistake a history of European painting for the history of all art in all places."
It's almost as though art appreciation as a college course is an arbitrary and frivolous endeavor.
Look at the advances made in Europe and The English speaking world in the last several hundred years. Science, art, agriculture , economics and liberal government. Now, look at the rest of the world.
"Look at the advances made in Europe"
Not so great in the world of Art. Painters still paint to this day with oil on canvas, just as they did 500 years ago. And their subjects haven't changed much either. Still obsessing over mystical Asian desert wanderers.

"If I retard my brain to a single art form who's pinnacle in popularity was 500 yrs. ago, the West hasn't advanced in art in the last 500 yrs."
Fekkin' 'merikans and their crusty old oil paintings of mystical Asian desert wanderers.
Painters still paint to this day with oil on canvas, just as they did 500 years ago.
They also use acrylic, and paint pictures of sports cars and spaceships.
America's most notable art work of the 21st century, the piss christ, has a subject matter that Da Vinci, Rembrandt or other old master would have readily recognized and understood. Art doesn't 'advance' in quite the same way as science or technology does.
Still doesn't change the fact that 20th and 21st century American artists use acrylic, a medium that didn't exist 100 years ago, and take as their subjects also things that didn't exist 100 years.
They use computers, sometimes, too.
In some societies, the economic culture hasn't developed to the point where there can be full-time artists creating art that has no function. They do still make things like pottery and ritual masks, though, like they have since the Stone Age.
"Still doesn’t change the fact that 20th and 21st century American artists use acrylic"
I grant you all this and more, but these are technical advances, not artistic. That little parch of yellow in Vermeer's painting that Proust rhapsodised over, was pigment that the artist ground himself, or at least under his direction. I think that depth of involvement in the art work is admirable and can't be duplicated by going to a shop and picking up something from an acrylic factory. But artists use whatever's at hand.
As for advances in art, I don't see it. The classical concept of beauty as seen in greek sculpture is still with us, modern literature and drama is a rehash of greek works.
"In some societies, the economic culture hasn’t developed to the point where there can be full-time artists creating art that has no function."
Medieval Ireland was as backward economically as they get, yet were able to produce stunningly beautiful religious works like the book of Kells, if memory serves. The creation of beautiful texts was seen as a form of worship. Art for art's sake, if you will.
Medieval Ireland was as backward economically as they get, yet were able to produce stunningly beautiful religious works like the book of Kells, if memory serves.
The Book of Kells was produced by full-time monks and commissioned by an aristocrat who could afford to have full-time monks color his book for him.
England didn't produce comparable stuff at that time because Ireland was considerably more stable and wealthy (at that time).
Observing that some societies are in a state to have a class of full-time 'art-people' is not a referendum on whether some cultures or people are inferior or superior. It's simply a matter of population density and social stability.
To talk about whether or not art "advances" requires defining what "advancing" would mean in terms of art, but it's indisputable that art evolves, even if classical principles of balance and harmony are 'eternal.' What we do with those isn't.
"Observing that some societies are in a state to have a class of full-time ‘art-people’ is not a referendum on whether some cultures or people are inferior or superior."
I understand your point, but it probably applies to many activities. The same societies that didn't have full time artists probably didn't have full time tailors either. The guys who did the paintings in the caves were probably hunting and doing other cave man things when they weren't painting antelopes.
The original poster made a comment about advances in art and science etc. I was commenting they are not the same.

Fair enough - the OP's comment was pretty reductionist.

This HAS to be trolling.
No one could be this stupid and be able to use a keyboard.
"This HAS to be trolling."
Because you disagree but can't formulate an objection? Trolling it is then.

You need to DIVERSIFY your exposure to art if you believe this. Perhaps visit a museum of modern art some day.
Yeah... you get art of twisted metal trash welded into statues, books full of straight pins, and paintings using not just oil paint, but craft gems, rhinestones, and glitter.
Amen ever looked at African Art?
One could probably power the entire city of New Haven just from William F. Buckley, Jr. spinning in his grave.
To paraphrase Robert Heinlein:
“Throughout history, ignorance is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject ignorance.
This is known as "bad luck.”
Hey, if the doyens of Inclusive Art want to really be fair, then museums and courses need to include art from everyone, including the stuff your dim-witted kid brings home from preschool and the pottery made at every senior center.
Have you been to a major city art museum in the last ten years?
Holy crap on a cracker (literally).
Good luck finding a standing exhibit that features classically admired paintings.
Hmm, wasn't Karl Marx a European white cishet male?
Shhhhhh!
It is problematic that the West has an outsized influence on the history of the West according to the lunatics running an institution of higher education, ...in the West.
I wish these people would just go off and form their own woke university instead of destroying existing ones. But destroying seems to be all they really know how, or at least enjoy, doing.
Progtards don’t make things. They latch onto existing things and corrupt and destroy them. Look at what’s happening to the NFL.
Elitist BS. Art is art and has its place no matter how culturally or ethnically centric it may be. Add another ‘World Art‘ course. How many old record shops added a world music section years ago? C’mon Yale don’t be stupid.
Finally we are starting to eradicate the centuries long grasp of the clingers! The art departments are just the beginning. All majors should get rid of classes that theach any accomplishment by a white male (as it is inherently racist) including all physics, math, med school, engineering, and chemistry classes
Also I use to thing the movie "PCU" was a comedy and not a documentary
Can someone remind me which of these is the original and which is the troll?
"Kirkland" is the original troll, and "Kuckland" is the troll-troll.
Yale should devote scant attention to pointers on operation of a strong, reason-based university from a mouthpiece for conservatives, who turn just about every campus they control into a fourth-tier, censorship-shackled, nonsense-teaching, science-disdaining clinger factory.
Is a "clinger factory" where they teach men how to wear dresses?
No, it's where puberty blockers are made for pre-teens who have known since they were in diapers that biology is a social construct.
It's a department that focuses on MRS degrees.
This is the original... right?
It is hard to tell, isn't it?
This illustrates a corollary to Poe's law.
It is possible to create an extreme parody of a troll that can be mistaken by some readers for the actual troll being parodied.
Or that the actual troll may be mistaken for the extreme parody.
You know the old saying "poe folks don't 'spect much"
I wonder if he gets paid a living wage for his takes.
It's funny to accuse conservatives of being censorship-shackled when it's the leftists who are doing the censoring these days!
Self awareness is in short supply among the woke.
You haven't killed yourself yet? What a pity.
We must destroy the four olds.
Off topic, but I received a news article today from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) Online with the following headline: “Hotels Tackle Human Trafficking at Super Bowl.” The article goes on to explain that hotels are training staff to spot and report human trafficking by focusing on the “warning signs.” It quotes a labor relations professor claiming that human traffickers try to make money whenever there are large cultural and sporting events.
Exactly how a labor relations professor becomes an expert on crime and law enforcement is left unexplained.
The moral panic continues.
(The article is behind a paywall, otherwise I’d post the link)>
"But the removal of the introductory course makes it difficult for non-majors with a casual interest in the subject to study it."
If you have a casual interest in art history, do you really need to piss away so much time and money at Yale to do it? I bet there are some books on the subject. Maybe even a YouTube video or two.
Millennial: "I tried one of those book things once. But I couldn't get it to turn on and it doesn't work with my Airpods."
Required humanities credits. Have to fill up the spot with something.
Yup and art history was a relatively easy and enjoyable means to get that credit.
If the kiddies are triggered by the course being too white and too male shouldn't Tim Barringer be canned as well. His complaint that the western canon is too straight is pretty stupid as well.

I loved him in Platoon and Major League. Surprised to hear him take such a contrary view to established canon. Didn't realize he was such an art history buff.
What's Eddie and the Cruisers, chopped liver?
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tim Barringer is the Paul Mellon professor of the history of art at Yale University.
Tom Berenger was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes in Platoon (1986).
Trying not to laugh. (I would say keeping a straight face, but that would be cishet.)
I got to thinking about the laughable Goldman Sachs announcement from Davos on their refusal to fund companies with only straight white males on the board. In particular, I wondered how they'd enforce such a thing? Imagine attempting to get capital funding for your business venture when suddenly you're sitting in a room being grilled by a Safety and Community officer from Goldman, demanding to know what your bedroom habits are.
If someone had mentioned in the mid 90s that major financial firms would start demanding to know the bedroom habits of companies' board members, you'd have been laughed out of the room and told you were a right wing christian nutjob. Now it's considered enlightened policy.
And it's discriminatory.
And they still won't love you Goldman Sachs.
It's also funny how easy this is to game. I was discussing with someone the possibility of going freelance, and maybe apply for a government contract. He recommended incorporating as a small country with my wife as the President of the company -- even if I'm the one who's doing all the work (and I wouldn't mind being the one doing all the work, because hey, I'm providing for my money!) -- BOOM! Instant "Woman-owned business"!
No board of directors would ever be so cynical as to do a stunt like that for sweet, sweet Goldman Sachs cash, right?
Did you read that Goldman Sachs is not applying this policy to IPOs originating in Asia, Africa or Central and South America?
Art students who wish to master the Western canon will still find plenty of other courses that satisfy their interests.
For now.
But the removal of the introductory course makes it difficult for non-majors with a casual interest in the subject to study it.
Bullshit. There's plenty of avenues out there for the study of art. You're just not picking up an easy 3 credits for pursuing them.
They will replace true art with...
'Woman using vibrator unironically in a vagina she didn't ask to have while cumming on Jesus's face'.
Or.
'Killin' all wypippo with this baseball bat as a metaphor for reparations'.
And.
'Deconstructing the Sistine Chapel and updating it for modern sensibilities'.
If they could, they would "deconstruct" the Sistine Chapel.
Oh I know.
It's been marked. I'm sure of it.
White AND Catholic. All it's missing is a MAGA hat and WaPo and all the progressive shit heads pissing over everything while offering noting to go berserk.
It's coming. 'The problem with the Sistine Chapel'.
And it would go along the lines of: 'Look, I know I'm about to commit blasphemy but I think we need to have a conversation about the Sistine Chapel. It's hopelessly dated and only timeless to conservative white people who can't accept change. Either we get people of colour, Muslims and the transgender communities involved in updating it or we take it down lest it offends our enlightened sensibilities. After all, what has Michelangelo and by extension the Italians - and the Romans - by extension the Renaissance and Baroque periods ever done for marginalized people? Did I say we need to talk? I mean shut the fuck up and listen.'
By Rev. Arthur Kirkland. Aka Dumbass.
Either we get people of colour, Muslims and the transgender communities involved in updating it or we take it down lest it offends our enlightened sensibilities.
I believe that's already covered by The Last Judgement.

That is incredibly stupid. Avoiding the real world because it might make someone uncomfortable? "Crunchy-granola racism".... Don't rewrite history, TEACH it...! ! ! Progress toward balance doesn't come from just running from sta'bd to port.
Too bad for those western artists. Little did they know the sins they were committing in being the color they were.
"Male, white and straight is no way to go through life son."

Is the new class called "Intro to Cultural Marxism"? If not, it should be, at least if truth-in-advertising is still a thing...
So, fight perceived racism and bias with more racism and bias. Got it.
If Yale chooses to commit academic suicide, so be it.
And, of course, there's no lack of great on-line and print resources that cover art history to any depth anyone cares to follow--my personal recommendation is an on-line company called The Great Courses, which is not to diminish some delightful videos by Sister Wendy Beckett, available on Amazon.
Thank you for sharing the post.
