Marianne Williamson Withdraws from the Presidential Race
So long, and thanks for all the memes.

The most interesting thing about Marianne Williamson's presidential campaign may be that it did about as well as you'd ordinarily expect a Marianne Williamson campaign to do. The self-help writer and spiritual leader, who suspended her New Age quest for the Democratic nomination on Friday, made a splash in the press and the meme factories by sounding so different from the other candidates. But her poll numbers never climbed above the low single digits, and now she has withdrawn before the voting begins. Apparently, the Oprah constituency isn't enough to win a major party's presidential nod this year. Maybe Oprah herself could do it, but not a mere Oprah guest.
That should not be surprising. Major political parties do not usually hand their national tickets to celebrity candidates who don't have any elected experience. But one of them did just that last time around, and the guy they picked then got elected president. And that experience has thrust some traumatized analysts into a state of epistemic nihilism, as though they can't entirely rule out the possibility that the Democrats will nominate an AI and the Republicans will nominate Bernie Sanders.
They can relax. We're just few weeks from the Iowa caucuses now, and the two leading contenders for the Democratic nomination are exactly what standard political wisdom would lead you to expect: (a) the guy who was vice president the last time the party held the White House, and (b) the guy who finished second in the last nomination contest. And the candidate with the best shot at coming from behind to beat them is a well-known senator who's spent years building a constituency.
Granted, one of those two frontrunners is a self-proclaimed socialist who isn't technically a member of the party; and yes, there's also a boy mayor from the Midwest in the mix. But that's not very far beyond the standard levels of political weirdness. It certainly isn't as strange as a Marianne Williamson presidency. That'll have to wait another four years.

Who?
Crystals chick. Was going to heal the soul of the nation through thoughts and crystals.
Probably the least insane DNC candidate after Tulsi.
Biden's not insane, he's just senile.
Just because he is senile doesn't mean he cannot be insane.
Guys, guys, come on now..... Biden is senile, insane, AND stupid. So everybody is right.
“And that experience has thrust some traumatized analysts into a state of epistemic nihilism, as though they can't entirely rule out the possibility that the Democrats will nominate an AI and the Republicans will nominate Bernie Sanders.”
There’s lots of examples that actually happened that could have been used to make this point.

Let's not forget the one who won the popular vote last time and has a long record of being the beneficiary of million-to-one freak occurrences, many of them involving the untimely deaths of people who might be problematic to her ambitions.
Poor Hill-chan... all her old associates suiciding all over the place.
She must be devastated.
My wife liked to watch that stupid "Scandal" show when it was running. Initially, I thought the resemblance to the Clintons was taking it a bit too far, until it came out that Shonda Rimes and Hillary are good friends. After that, I just assumed that Rimes was simply parroting Hillary's real-life stories under the pretense that no one would honestly believe the shit was true.
To be a bit pedantic, she didn’t “win” the popular vote. There was no election involving popular voting. Democrats need to be reminded of this constantly.
She also didnt get a majority of votes.
Only if you count illegals, felons, children, illegals, corpses, pets, cartoon characters, extraterrestrials, and people from other quantum realities.
And one of the states where she ran up the votes have bizarre election rules that resulted in no GOP candidate in the Senate race which arguably suppressed GOP turnout.
Cant wait to see how this escalates, love to share it with hobbyhuren girls
This chick isnt worth any click space so switching this to a roundup thread.
While Reason and the media in general were attempting to blame Trump for shooting down the Ukrainian airliner... the people in Iran are protesting the Ayotollah and asking for change.
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/we-dont-want-islamic-republic-thousands-of-protesters-stand-up-to-irans-brutality
Doubt reason even mentions this despite the fact they were for the arab spring a few years back.
So in the last week we have Soleimani dead and the starts of protests against Iranian leadership in public.
Maybe the Iran deal was a piece of shit and we can all finally agree it simply funded a brutal dictatorship.
B-b-but the Iranian people love their leaders now because orange man bad!
Reason's insightful commenters and writers assured me of this when I argued otherwise!
Remember, for any Iranian demonstration, you have to determine if the demonstrators are Shia or Sunni.
The middle east (and a bit beyond) are not so much composed of nation states as they are composed of Islamic sects.
http://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/iran-de-escalation-only-solution-anti-government-protests-tehran-turn-bloody
Funny how so many of the Obama administration's decisions regarding Middle East policy ended up benefitting the Iranian regime. Just a coincidence, I'm sure.
I've posted the list of how they benefitted Russia as well. This even included transfer of technology now used in their hypersonic programs.
Plus now the Russians have the Crimea and a psuedo-truce in the Donbass region of Ukraine.
Hypersonic weapons sound great because they reduce the decision time for target ships, military bases, and aircraft.
Sometimes weapons are too fast and dont cause enough damage to the target. See naval dive bomber bombs that dont detonate inside ship but pass right thru and rifle shots that pass thru a person without causing extra bullet damage.
They have a purpose. They are hard to intercept and the kinetic damage alone does this:

That's too bad. Marianne Wiliamson was second on my preference list for Democratic nominees:
1.Tulsi
2.
Marianne Williamson3. Andrew Yang
There is no #4
Funny. Marianne Wiliamson was #0 on my non-existent preference list for Democrats.
Tied, actually
Here’s my list:
That is all.
Thats' so sad to see that withdrawl from presidential race!
Pull out! Pull out!!
If we're going to do a round-up thread, you'll need your daily dose of insane people doing insane shit.
Ok but this was just awesome. Some people just restore your faith in humanity.

Jerry gets it.
Low wage real growth is happening despite democratic candidates and OBL screaming everyone has 2 jobs to get by.

As somebody who lived through the Carter "stagflation" years, it seems to me that we have the exact opposite of that economy, but just as high unemployment, high interest rates and high inflation were not supposed to be able to co-exist according to standard economic theory, neither are the opposite. Which suggests the economic experts in the central bank business might be pushing the buttons and pulling the levers and turning the knobs and blowing the whistle up there in the cab, but the economic train ain't connected to the dashboard and they're not actually operating the thing.
The employment-to-population ratio *has* gotten better, but it's still far below the pre-recession levels. The highest it's ever been was April of 2000, but I think a lot of that can be attributed to a perfect intersection of nearly all the Boomers, all the Gen-Xers, and the first wave of the Millennials in the workforce at the same time. The 2001-2 recession knocked out a bunch of those folks, and the 2008 one cleared a bunch of the Boomers out, in conjunction with their normal retirement ages.
Short of another baby boom like the post-WW2 era, I don't think we're going to see a ratio that high again in our lifetimes. The ratio being where it is now pretty much cost Bush I his presidency.
What if we (gasp!) eliminated Social Security?
That would be a catastrophe. Imagine massive violent demonstrations by people on scooters. No, we'll have to transition out of Social Security by first going to a means-tested pension program.
Can't be done all at once. The generation that's about to retire assumed social security was going to be there. You get rid of it and suddenly every night time story on the news will be some starving old person.
Most of my generation doesn't believe Social Security will be there when we retire, so ratcheting it down over time would actually work.
Allow an opt out after 20 years. I'd take my 12.4% deduction even after 20 years instead of my SS promises.
Right just put it into an IRA 401k or something where you can chose your own investments. You would get much better returns.
Ok I’ll take what I put in at 6% compounded. No problem.
Yeah, me too. Hell, I'd be happy with 3% real compounded.
LOL — National Review is not a legitimate source.
Besides, Koch / Reason libertarianism is primarily concerned with improving the financial situations of the richest people on the planet. And Charles Koch's net worth has already declined by a few hundred million in 2020. That means the economy sucks.
#DrumpfRecession
The problem with that is it goes by percent. Poor people might have gotten 4.5% richer, but the rich have gotten like 3%. If you make $20,000 a year, you're $1,000 richer. If you make $100,000, you're $3,000 richer
It's a good thing we learned to normalize data centuries ago.
You've been missed, Marianne.
I did enjoy your debate appearance
A bit strange Reason hasn't mentioned the death of Neil Peart.
Dude was as libertarian as musicians can get.
Not to mention an all-time great drummer and percussionist with an immeasurable influence and impact.
There will probably be something on Monday about that.
And will attribute his death to Trump.
They are in no rush to mention it. Most of the writers are east coast millenials, or at least act like it
They are in no rush
TOO SOON!
I was hoping someone picked up on that 🙂
Nick ain't no millennial.
Sadly, he wasted his career playing behind a terrible vocalist who sounded like a cartoon character. Many of us just couldn't get past that.
Rush to judgment?
I understand Lee's voice isn't for everyone but Rush succeeded nonetheless and became pretty iconic and influential in the process.
I wouldn't say wasted at all.
Perhaps he had individual agency and made his free-will decision to stay where he was.
And many of us in the Rock listening public made the free-will decision that we're not going to listen to the tubercular whining of Lee just because he had a good drummer.
take off, hoser.
Prog rock has long been snubbed.
That's because other than King Crimson and some of the Canterbury stuff prog rock generally sucks donkey dicks.
One of his last interviews was to disown his Ayn Rand influences, call himself a bleeding heart libertarian, and say that Senator Rand Paul hates brown people.
I think his brain cancer may have started that year.
He was a prickly sort of guy which came through in interviews. He also pretty much kept to himself. He was one of those whose attitude was I don’t care what you think. That really came through in the music. People kept bashing on Rush and they just kept doing it anyway.
One of the things I like about Peart and Rush actually.
Yeah, I don't think he was that much of a libertarian really. He had his Ayn Rand phase in his 20s (and they were totally surprised at the negative reaction they got; he just read a book and thought it was a good message, didn't know the can of worms it opened), kept some of those themes going in later stuff. But became pretty "left-libertarian" (whatever that is).
Still, I was a huge Rush fan as a teenager and their individualist messages in many songs helped shape my view of the world. Neil was a smart and interesting person and one of the best drummers ever and he will be missed.
Ayn Rand fucking sucks. I'm still surprised libertarians like her. Extremist individualism is NOT libertarian when it involves violating the rights of others.
(Spoiler Alert if you haven't read The Fountainhead)
Her "hero" (in addition to being a rapist) dynamited the building he designed because the owner of the builder changed the design against his wishes and then "triumphantly" got off for the malevolent destruction of someone else's property by making a moving speech at trial about "ego" and "integrity".
She was no fan of libertarians. We actually give a shit about property rights.
Progressive rock is not cool. All the cool kids hate on it and love punk. Therefore we will probably see another Lou Reed article than one on Rush
Progressive rock is clearly intended to appeal to pubescent boys. I had my Emerson Lake and Palmer records at that age. There's something a little off, though, about men who continue to play and enjoy it past age 15 or 16. But, different strokes. People listening to music I don't appreciate doesn't harm me.
As a punk/New wave type, I always found Rush to be among the most tolerable of the proggies. Others I could stand: Kraftwerk, Blue Oyster Cult (for the humor,) Zappa (if he can be categorized at all,) Hawkwind (for the SF elements.) You get crazy trying to draw lines. Robert Fripp worked with Bowie and Blondie, and Mother of Invention Adian Belew played with King Crimson, the Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson and King Crimson. Just listen to what you like.
He disavowed libertarianism.
Give them a minute, eh. There is a post about him now.
FISC appoints David Kris for FISA reforms. Who is this guy? Obama appointee, maddoe guest, and someone who decried the Nunes memo when it came out as fabricated. He has defended the Mueller and russia investigations from the outset.
This is what government reform looks like.
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fisa-selects-former-obama-admin-lawyer-left-wing-blogger-to-oversee-fbis-surveillance-reforms
Cops investigating themselves are rarely going to find a great deal of misbehavior. I believe this is what is known as "a jury of your peers", but for some strange reason they don't extend that principle to selecting normal jury pools out of the penitentiaries.
https://thefederalist.com/2020/01/12/spy-court-picks-fisa-abuse-denier-to-tackle-fisa-abuse/
That'll have to wait another four years.
Maybe on this plane of existence.
I guess a single-term Senator counts as 'elected experience' for the purposes of this jab.
Or a TV show host.
Maybe Oprah herself could do it
Not anymore. She’s way past her peak. Maybe if she’d run in 2000.
can't entirely rule out the possibility that the Democrats will nominate an AI
I don’t think we can entirely rule out the Democrats nominating Donald Trump.
Newage is one word. And it rhymes with sewage.
I think the fact that Ms. Williamson got as far as she did is an interesting comment on politics today. I think libertarians should look at her candidacy and ask how she was able to generate enough interest to get as far as she did and to participate in as many debates as she did. She will likely be remembered longer that the libertarian nominee, who ever that may be.
Interest? 0-1% in a democratic primary for most polls? She didnt get far at all.
She was not alone in polling poorly, which included some candidates who should have done better. She also had a spot in two debates and had a few lines that were memorable. And sadly I suspect she will be remembered longer than the Libertarian candidate.
By that logic, Michael Bennet is about to surge up the polls any day now.
Was she in any debates that required qualification?
I only remember being in the first
The mass appeal and acceptance of new age spirituality a la people like Williamson and Gwyneth Paltrow is like the same dynamic Walker has written about with conspiracy theories--being more normal and typical than a lot of people think.
Can't help but wonder if it's a female vs. male thing. Maybe guys are more prone to believing in conspiracy theories to explain the world where women are more likely to lean towards spirituality. If guys are more likely to think that it's the government that doesn't want them to know the truth, women may be more amenable to the message that the truth (or the cure) is in the spiritual realm.
guys are more prone to believing in conspiracy theories to explain the world
But the government doesn't want us to know that truth?
In a perverse way, it's more comforting to believe that world events are under the control of bright and competent but evil men acting in secret than to accept the truth that no one is at the wheel.
No one being at the wheel is scary. That the people we think are in control are completely incompetent is scarier still. The most terrifying notion of all may be that our destiny is likely a function of our own choices.
That would not only mean that my present circumstances, if rotten, are probably my fault but also that if I ever escape them, it will be up to me. Can't entertain horrifying ideas like that. That's what the subject of Munch's paintings was thinking about the moment he let out his scream. Much easier to believe that my shitty circumstances are the result of a conspiracy to rob me of my great destiny, either that or that I'm one or two breakthroughs away from reaching my full potential through self-actualization.
Half of it, at least, is people being too scared to leave their current employer.
“No one being at the wheel is scary. That the people we think are in control are completely incompetent is scarier still. The most terrifying notion of all may be that our destiny is likely a function of our own choices.”
Well said. Yet we go and put fuel in the car, grab a bite to eat, cup of something, show up and make it all happen every day.
That is the wonder of it all.
You're halfway to the truth. The reality is that no one is running the world AND we are not in control of our own destinies. We're all Bozos on this bus.
Alarmed drivers ... spotted a young girl ... in a vehicle holding up a handmade sign that read “Help me, she’s not my mom!! Help!!” .... After motorists ... called 911, ... officers and a K9 unit performed a high-risk stop on the vehicle .... Then they discovered it was just a hoax cooked up by the girl .... After confirming the incident was bogus, officers let the mother and daughter go

I was listening Marianne Williamson’s first debate and it's turned her into a meme
love *will* prevail.
The most interesting thing about Marianne Williamson's presidential campaign
