Dave Chappelle: Second Amendment 'Is Just in Case the First One Doesn't Work Out'
The comedian received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in D.C. this weekend. His acceptance speech airs on PBS in January.

In what he said was an unscripted acceptance speech on Sunday night, comedian Dave Chappelle continued his recent campaign against cancel culture—while openly defying a smoking ban and defending the right to bear arms too.
Chappelle was fêted on Sunday night in Washington, D.C., as this year's recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, a lifetime achievement award bestowed annually by the Kennedy Center. Known for his irreverent and boundary-pushing sketch comedy show and standup routines, Chappelle has never shied away from an opportunity to eviscerate political correctness for laughs. Sunday's event was no different, according to media reports.
"It's the best part of the First Amendment to me that I'm able to express myself this way and make a viable living doing it," Chappelle told NPR prior to going on stage Sunday night.
On stage, he reportedly lit up a cigarette—"What are they gonna do? Kick me out before I get the prize?" he said, according to USA Today—and took aim at the same woke scolds who were targets during his recent Netflix standup special. He faced backlash for joking about, among other things, LGBTQ people (whom Chappelle referred to as "the alphabet people"), Michael Jackson's accusers, and people who dig through old tweets in an effort to hurt comedians' lives and careers over off-color jokes.
Wow ok. Dave Chappelle's impressions are spot on.

Saying that he knows comedians who are "very racist" in their jokes, Chappelle asked everyone listening to please chill.
"Don't get mad at 'em, don't hate on 'em," Chappelle said Sunday. "Man, it's not that serious. The First Amendment is first for a reason. Second Amendment is just in case the first one doesn't work out."
Chappelle's acceptance speech will air on January 7 at 9 p.m. EST on PBS.

Dave Chappelle is awesome. One of the funniest guys in the business, and a nice guy.
Exactly.
The First protects the Second and the Second protects the First.
Together, they protect everything else.
And tell me all about your Rights being protected that you can slip your handgun in your pocket and go out for the evening? Well not without government permission and state's Rights saying you can.
The 1st? Except "hate speech" or in a public place without government permission, or jokes that offend or art that offends or religion that is tax free but not charitable...
What protects the 4th?
Who’s talking about hate speech! Your whole comment was filled with hateful innuendo! Free speech means Free Speech For All! Why can’t someone on the right make an intelligent comment about their rights? Speak as though you want people to understand you.
On another note! I have yet to hear any events in the whole of the US where a GOOD GUY with a GUN! .. SAVED OTHERS FROM A BAD GUY WITH A GUN! Where were all of you during all of the MASS SHOOTINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED IN THE US IN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS! What were you doing then? Working? Shopping! Cleaning your guns just in case! You are never anywhere to be seen...... your arguments fail Big Time!
There are many, but the most salient is the Sutherland Springs shooting. The asshole was shot by an NRA instructor, Stephen Willeford, using an AR-15. The asshole fled toward another church, but he was mortally wounded by Willeford, the hero with a gun—a scary black one no less.
Well, he didn't actually "stop" the shooting, so that statement is inaccurate. He WAS fired upon, when he walked out of the church. The shooting had already occurred.
As far as mortally wounded, I don't know. However, he did die of a self-inflicted gsw.
Please provide a link that he "fled toward another church", from a reputable source. That's the first I've heard about that. He fled, cause someone was shooting back.

There are stories almost daily about good people saving dumb people from bad people. However, to see them you first need to pull your head out of the MSM sphincter.
I will agree with this though. There is an utter lack of solid studies showing exactly how often this happens. The one study published by the CDC was retracted because they did not feel it was rigorous enough. But, no follow on story was conducted. What is the number, and why is it being suppressed? You guys yammer all day it never happens, but that is patently untrue. We intuitively know why you don’t want that number published, though, because as long as it is not out there showing that more lives are absolutely saved than lost due to guns you won’t have a leg to stand on.
Anti-hate speech is currently contained in business and campuses, as civil infractions and liability, but it chafes to get into the wild.
We'll be seeing more of it -- check out this brain scan, proving brain changes to hateful words!
Do not let it ecape. Tyrants aborning wait, drooling at this hole they will effortlessly enlarge.
Spot on, fuck this stupid ass pc culture...the ones crying about it only like it if it's their pc culture being followed, the alphabet people are far from pc
^ 1,000 Times
It's a fad. Once corporations realize transient twitter apoplexy does not lead to decreased sales, things will normalize somewhat.
Currently business is still operating under the multiplier that one written letter represents 60,000 upset people too lazy to write. Hence their animalistic sheer terror at the size of a twitter response.
Dump Pence, Chappelle 4 VP!
To whom? Trump? He’s not a fan. Go ahead and Google it.
Reagan couldn't stand Bush. Kennedy hated LBJ. Slick Willy wasn't a big fan of Gore.
And unlike those men, Trump doesn't know how to swallow his pride and do what will work, rather then what he wants to do.
Tell us, what would work better than the best employment numbers in history, rising incomes, lower taxes, and restoring the rule of law?
Not having trillion dollar deficits 10 years into an economic expansion
The notion I was refuting was that Trump would be able to put aside his personal differences to work with Chappelle as VP, in contrast to the other presidents/VPs soldiermedic76 cited.
The stuff you want to talk about is irrelevant to that point.
You're dumber than a box of petrified turds if you think Trump has done anything related to 'restoring the rule of law.'
You must be referring to his blatant obstruction of justice and claims of total, inviolable executive privilege while refusing to permit any Congressional oversight whatsoever.
You know, one of those enumerated powers specifically granted to Congress.
Fucking Trumptards...somehow no matter how deep a hole he digs for himself, you people lead the way with your stupidity.
Anyone who's watched his specials knows that already, Goofy.
Naw...make him Press Secretary and watch him burn down the WH corespondents when they ask their dumbass "questions."
It would be a daily comedy show!
Eh, no one's been able to top Spicer in that regard.
Chappelle gets it
Airing on PBS? That should be amusing.
"We are bleeping out certain inappropriate words in the speech. Now for the speech itself:
"Bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep fuck."
Massive power outages strike midtown Manhattan as all the white liberal elites turn off PBS as the same time, throwing the power grid into chaos.
"The comedian received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in D.C. this weekend. His acceptance speech airs on PBS in January." Yeah, I'll bet the 1st/2nd Amendment bits get edited out...
Bet you money the edit out the whole cigarette stunt
I HAVE FAINTED.
I would ask Dave Chappelle what if both the First and Second Amendment have failed. Or if the Second amendment is repealed then it will be much easier to take the First Amendment rights also.
He's a comedian, dude.
For Americans born After Twitter, this is how America used to deal with PC and cancel culture.
Doesn't count. Everyone knows that Arsenio is an alt-right Trump supporter.
So it's only pc if the alphabet people say it is? Please with the alt right angle, it's a bunch of bs...and really arsenio hall reference bahahahaha!!!
So you actually care about the politics of a Hollyweird celebrity? You taking clues or something?
Have you ever heard of jokes?
Duuuuude!!
I like this guy
So in the captioning they type the f-word In full but asterisk out the n-word. Seems to me that they are proving his point while they are broadcasting the show.
One is vulgar. The other is a slur. No reason they should be treated the same.
But they didn't bleep out the actual audio for either...
But the guy typing the captions was white, so he couldn't do that
Why couldnt he? Is pc only for the white people in this nation? Get a grip! And was it really a white guy, or are you making your feelings and assumptions relevant? Lil bahahahaaha
You seem to be missing a sense of humor.
“You just called me a house nigger!” “No sir! I don’t think you’re a house...N word.”
But Dave Chapelle said he’s not a nigger either!
Slur? Get with a group of black men and see how often they drop the word nigger. I take offense to the fact they have appropriated a word that was used exclusively by whites!!!!
Nicely played.
Second Amendment is just in case the first one doesn't work out.
God I hate it when people say this. Because it implies that rights flow from the barrel of a gun. They don't. Rights exist because we are born with them.
It is one of his new jokes. Dark humor like a lot of his new stuff. He goes into a routine about buying a shotgun in the new show.
Chapelle is taking on the whole hypocrisy of our culture. He gets away with it because he has the chops to do it. His shtick is to poke fun at the thin veneer of moral outrage we all have. Guns are a touchy issue which is why he is talking about them.
You are insufferable.
No one forces you to read my comments.
Who decides what rights you are born with? Hint: It's the people with the guns.
^^^^^^^^^ this
Oh okay. So we don't actually have the right to smoke pot, because the people with guns currently tell us that we don't. Is that your position? On a libertarian forum?
No shit, that’s why you can’t smoke pot legally in this country.
People with guns (LEOs) are the enforcement arm of government.
When government says you can't smoke pot, it is backed up by someone with a gun. This is one of the reasons libertarians are for small government.
The legislator who is trying to remove one of your rights does not need the gun. He's a guy for that.
Guns are also how you defend liberty from tyranny. Which is why many politicians want to remove your right to own one. It gets in their way.
What happens when everyone owns a gun? Who’s going to decide which form of “liberty” is correct? I’d rather have a clash of ideals than guns. But ideas aren’t shiny and cool or accessible by the average schmuck with an inferiority complex.
What happens when everyone owns a gun?
Generally speaking, everyone gets a lot more polite and willing to work to find a compromise that keeps everyone's guns holstered.
That said, your objection here is a philosophical objection to a utilitarian/pragmatic problem. Even if you're morally right, it doesn't matter.
@Eric said the Jews under Hitler and anybody behind the iron curtain. Are you really that fucking stupid? Seriously, we call you control freak scum "leftards" for a reason. Nobody is saying to not debate ideas because we got guns, guns are a last line of defense against a tyrannical government, it has nothing to do with your leftard's fake "inferiority complex". God you fucking people are stupid.
""I’d rather have a clash of ideals than guns."'
Ideas can't defend your liberty against armed authoritarians who have little use and respect for your ideas. This has been proven time and time again throughout history.
The clash of guns comes when the clash of ideas becomes futile. It should always be a last resort, and you better win, else your just a terrorist.
No it was the people who wrote the constitution, to protect us from the ignorant liberals who walk aimlessly like zombies, until they are guided by big government...sensible people created the 2nd amendment, our right to bear arms, another right that we were born with.
No dumbfucks. The 2A is to protect against people willing to take away your natural born rights. It isn't that they come from a gun but are protected by people with guns. Not a hard concept to grasp. Except for you.
Let him switch to one of socks to defend his sophistry. He will be right back.
I think it's your turn under Senator Hawley's desk.
It's adorable how fucking stupid you are.
Which once again leads to the implication that if you don't have guns, you don't have rights.
Yes cytotoxic, your whining impotent teenage rage and 10 bucks in Canadian Tire money will get you a cup of coffee but won't really do much for you when you're getting mugged. Since you're too effete to handle firearms, and live in a country where it's illegal to do so anyway, your best defense of your rights is courts. Whose decisions are enforced by... no prizes for guessing... men with guns.
Oh, no. You have them. Just be aware that your rights mean nothing to people who don't respect them, to the point they will murder you if you try to assert your rights. Having guns means that just maybe they will not murder you, or at least you can take a few of them with you.
Which once again leads to the implication that if you don’t have guns, you don’t have rights.
That's right, fuckwad. The right to self-defense is part of that puzzle. Are you going to start pimping for stricter gun control measures now?
""Which once again leads to the implication that if you don’t have guns, you don’t have rights.""
More like if a society is not armed, it can lead to a government that does not allow you to exercise your rights. There is plenty examples of this throughout history.
Exactly!
If you don't fight for them you will lose them. The barrel of a gun has kept us from speaking German, Russian, Spanish, etc. Glad our forefathers didn't have you weak ass mentality.
chemjeff would gladly see his relatives raped and murdered by MS-13 gang members as long as he didn't have to lose one less roach coach in his neighborhood, so it's not like he's going to come out with a robust defense of the 2nd Amendment.
It's a good thing that the rights you were born with are inviolable and you will never need to defend them from incursion. Imagine if your natural rights were violable. You'd have to make up a new right just to defend them! A right to self-defense, hypothetically.
"Rights exist because we are born with them."
Sure, tell that to the millions who died under Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot....they may be inalienable, but they are not free or guaranteed.
Gravity is a Law of Nature. You can't actually break it. Every appearence thereof is actually just us learning more about it.
"Natural rights", on the other hand, are trivially easy to take away, violate, rescind, and ignore. There is no natural force that prevents people from doing any of that. In fact, the only thing that prevents "natural rights" from being violated is humans deciding to stop it.
"Rights" are philosophical constructs to describe the ideal world. They are not a real thing outside our heads. They only have the force we give them.
Which is to say, no, rights do not exist because we are born with them. Rights exist because we grant them to each other.
Western Civilization decided this whole right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness of the individual to be the paramount principle on which to build.
Rights are ephemeral not inalienable. And they only project from the barrel of a gun. Depending on an accident of birth what culture you are born into largely decides what is inalienable.
Collectivist and royalist cultures believe the individual is subservient to the collective or monarch and they don't accept the concepts espoused by western civilization. Some of those have been plodding along for millenia, while others were lost in the Colombian Exchange.
Since these other cultures do not ascribe rights to be "inalienable" or list others than WC does, it follows that which rights are inalienable is belief rather than science. That makes the philosophic underpinning of cultures more like a theology than a science.
WC believes the individual is sacrosanct and all rules follow from that. In western civilization the logic flows well and appears to have developed a subjectively better outcome for individuals within its sphere of influence.
When we discuss rights, especially when used with diversity and inclusion, keep that in mind.
Because it implies that rights flow from the barrel of a gun.
Rights flow from the barrel of a gun. Prove me wrong.
They don’t. Rights exist because we are born with them.
Incorrect, see above, they are self-evident truths. They exist whether you were born or not. Case in point, fetuses have some rights and fully born humans don't enjoy many rights until 18 yrs. after their birth.
they are self-evident truths
Probably better stated as, 'they are derivatives of self-evident truths'. Just because you've been born doesn't mean you can speak and just because you can't speak doesn't mean you don't have a right to free speech.
And just because you don’t have a uterus doesn’t mean you don’t have a right to have a baby - Monty Pythons Life of Brian.
And just because you don’t have a uterus doesn’t mean you don’t have a right to have an abortion - 2020 Democratic Candidate
Monty Python - wait, that was a joke. WTF
Rights do exist because we are born with them but those rights are protected by the barrel of a gun
That's true. But you still need a way to defend those rights. Hopefully it can be done with laws (e.g. the first amendment). But sometimes force is necessary.
“Because it implies that rights flow from the barrel of a gun.”
No it doesn’t. It says that rights are ultimately defended with guns.
Thats not what it implies at all.
God created men
Samuel Colt made them equal.
And the infrared sniper scope made them all the same color.
Are you kidding me? IR scopes are so notorious for discriminating against filthy brown people it's practically a movie trope.
To bad he's not a libertarian. He voted for Hillary.
It's hard to believe Frontline: Clayton Bigsby first aired almost 17 years ago. Oh well, I suppose most kids today are too woke to see the humor anyway.
Well said, Dave!
The First protects the Second and the Second protects the First.
Together, they protect everything else.
Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?
Run ho, run!
Dave Chappelle will always remain one of my best comedians. He is doing some nice job. Help with data analysis for dissertation
Cue white people being mad that a black guy doesn’t want to be disarmed in 3, 2, 1...
Actually is the retarded libs, who are black, white , and many other brainless lifeforms that are crying. A white man that is strong and stable, is a threat to the lazy and brainless lifeforms ie; libtards, leftist demonrats....a weak white man feels guilt for something he had nothing to do with....no white guilt here...I am a proud, strong, white man, who was not born with a silver spoon, I work for a living and I dont play the race card to feel better about my shortcomings in life....get a grip.
You are really going for it here. Let's see if you can completely miss the point of every comment.
Cue uneducated idiots who bought the koolaid that the left sold them since the 1950s 3...2...1.. waaaaay waaaaah
You can buy a "Chappelle For President: Power to the Funny People" shirt from Liberty Maniacs.
Unfortunately, as far as the police are concerned, the Second Amendment is for whites only. Just ask Philando Castile or Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr. (well, you'll have to wait until the afterlife to do that).
Fitting that he would get the Mark Twain award at a time when both Chappelle and Twain are unwelcome in our schools.
Don't tell me... um... Sharon Stone?
Did Mark Twain know his name would be attached to an award given out for no reason other than there will be a dinner that people will pay for.
Dave Chappelle is not in a class of brilliant thinkers and it makes me shudder just as seeing Obama having Paul McCartney to the White House. The lines are blurred for politicians and the elite as what is what...
I'm confident that Mark Twain would enjoy Chappelle's act and would be thrilled to know that ceremonies are still being held in his honor.
"...and it makes me shudder"
You need some pearls to clutch.
The Second Amendment is simply that every citizen can keep and bear arms and nobody can take that away or regulate it. If one does not think that is what it means then do not feel bad, the Supreme Court does not either. Gun control is people control by force and has been tried and many died. Why do we allow these would-be dictators to wander our streets? Freedom I guess and thus the absolute need for the Second Amendment.
Americans have a First Amendment right to advocate suicidal public policies.
