"I have received information from multiple U.S. Government officials that the President of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election…" The whistleblower complaint against President Donald Trump that has fueled an impeachment inquiry was made public this morning.

"This interference includes, among other things, pressuring a foreign country to investigate one of the President's main domestic political rivals," says the complaint, dated August 12. The writer was "not a direct witness to most of the events described" but found colleagues' accounts "to be credible because, in almost all cases, multiple officials recounted fact patterns that were consistent with one another."

It goes on to state that there were about a dozen people on the July 25 call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. According to the complaint, this was expected to be a "routine" call and White House officials were subsequently instructed to "lock down" records of the conversation. It also says that efforts related to Zelenskiy and to digging up potential Biden dirt started long before July. (Read the whole complaint here.)

!!!! Buried in the appendix:

WB: "According to White House officials… this was 'not the first time' under this Administration that a Presidential transcript was placed into this codeword-level system solely for the purpose of protecting politically sensitive… information."

— Tim Mak (@timkmak) September 26, 2019

Records viewed by investigative journalist Murray Waas suggest that the initial impetus for Trump's interest in Ukraine was to suss out potential fodder for pardoning Paul Manafort and discrediting the special investigation being undertaken by Robert Mueller.

"Attorneys representing Trump and Manafort respectively had at least nine conversations relating to this effort, beginning in the early days of the Trump administration, and lasting until as recently as May of this year," Waas claims in The New York Review of Books. He continues:

Through these deliberations carried on by his attorneys, Manafort exhorted the White House to press Ukrainian officials to investigate and discredit individuals, both in the US and in Ukraine, who he believed had published damning information about his political consulting work in the Ukraine. A person who participated in the joint defense agreement between President Trump and others under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, including Manafort, allowed me to review extensive handwritten notes that memorialized conversations relating to Manafort and Ukraine between Manafort's and Trump's legal teams, including Trump's personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani.

As personal lawyer and all-around fixer, Giuliani fills roles Manafort and Michael Cohen previously filled for Trump.

"The new disclosures in this story underscore how this scheme originated in the long-running coordination between Trump, Giuliani, and Manafort to frustrate the Mueller investigation," Waas sums up.

Since yesterday, when a transcript of Trump's phone call with Zelenskiy was released, Zelenskiy himself has weighed in and more information about the scope of Giuliani and Trump's meddling has come out.

ABC reported yesterday that Serhiy Leshchenko, a former Zelenskiy advisor, said "it was clear" that Trump would only talk to Zelenskiy "if they will discuss the Biden case. This issue was raised many times. I know that Ukrainian officials understood." But Leshchenko apparently disputes this:

Setting record straight: @Leshchenkos confirmed to me what those of us in Kyiv already knew—he is NOT currently an advisor to Ukraine's Zelenskiy & wasn't at time of July 25 call. He said he DID NOT tell ABC insistence for leaders to discuss Biden probe was precondition for call. https://t.co/fNh5sMYj9i

— Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM) September 26, 2019

For the Ukrainian president's part, he said on Wednesday:

I'm sorry, but I don't want to be involved in…elections of USA….We had, I think, a good phone call. It was normal, we spoke about many things, and you read it that nobody pushed it, nobody pushed me.

There's some room for interpretation in the summary of the Zelenskiy phone call that the White House put out yesterday, but it certainly isn't the good look that Trump seems to think it is.

So, this is the key statement near the start of the transcript. Note the Trump says Ukraine hasn't been "reciprocal" -- which is fine for presidents to say -- yet then the rest of the transcript lays out Trump's requests. /1 pic.twitter.com/23eaeSaqo8

— David French (@DavidAFrench) September 25, 2019

One element that peaked interest was Trump's seemingly random mention of the private security firm Crowdstrike ("I would like you to find out what happened with this whole situation with Ukraine, they say CrowdStrike…I guess you have one of your wealthy people….The server, they say Ukraine has it") and the company's subsequent insistence that it has no idea why it was invoked. Crowdstrike was the firm hired by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to examine its servers, and the group that concluded "two separate Russian intelligence-affiliated adversaries" had been behind the infiltration and distribution of the DNC emails.

Trump's interest in Crowdstrike seems to be for basically bonkers conspiracy-theory reasons. First, he has repeatedly claimed the company is based in Ukraine when it's actually located in California, with no apparent connection to Ukrainians. Second, Trump appears to buy into a conspiracy theory surrounding Crowdstrike, the DNC emails, Seth Rich, and a secret server.

"Not only has he endorsed this nonsensical theory on Twitter and in press conferences," writes Andy Kroll, "but we now know he does it in private calls with foreign leaders and is using the power of the oval office to press for actual investigations."

In August, Texas financial advisor and conservative commentator Edward Butowsky filed a federal lawsuit against Crowdstrike, the Democratic National Committee, law firm Perkins Coie, and others. The suit alleges that the law firm was hired by the DNC to hide "the Russian collusion hoax" and that Perkins Coie in turn "retained CrowdStrike for the purpose of creating the false narrative that the Russian government had hacked the DNC's servers."

      1. damikesc   6 years ago

It's identical to it. They go with Trump asking for a favor and then forget that the favor involved investigations into the 2016 election.

        1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

"the favor involved investigations into the 2016 election."

It *involved* the election but only in one direction - the Crowdstrike nonsense.

Can you make ME forget about seeing you with all that too SQRLSY? I was just trying to use the urinal.

          3. JesseAz   6 years ago

Are you even capable of rational thought?

Mueller investigation literally ended pretty close to this call. Mueller found no evidence Trump or his team were involved in hacking the DNC servers per his report. So he asks someone who was supposedly connected, Ukraine, to help if they have the server where it was rumored to be. And you think this is trump doing what?

            How fucking stupid are you?

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

I think this is Trump pushing a crazy conspiracy, and in only one direction - that helps him and hurts Democrats, and not as some neutral-sounding "investigation into election meddling".

              1. Red Rocks White Privilege   6 years ago

The head of a political party is abusing his official position and soliciting the help of a foreign government to make the other political party look bad! Oh no!

No one cares that Trump tweets dumb things about Democrats. It's the whole abuse of power thing that is problematic.

                  1. Caught Wearing Trudeauface   6 years ago

And your evidence for this abuse is a phone cal where no abuse occurred, some weird consprcscy theory about Giuliani, and 3rd party gossip.

Ronna Romney McDaniel is the head of the RNC. Mitt's niece.

The chief executive of the US is seeking help in investigating corruption in the 2016 election process.

If Clinton let the FBI do the forensics on the server instead of taking the server to her IT people, there would not be ammo for a conspiracy. If Trump did this, you would believe he had something to hide in doing so.

Considering the current right-wing view of the FBI - yeah, there would still be conspiracies.

Plus, it's Hillary. She ordered both Seth Rich and Vince Foster murdered. Remember?

This is basically how modern journalism works. If it hasn't been already been coordinated ahead of time by a Journolist sharegroup, one outlet will put out their story, and then every other media bobblehead outlet will re-tweet it, cite it as fact, and pass it off as their own work rather than do real, actual journalism to call people up and find out for themselves.

I'd ask how since Ukraine didn't even know the aid was delayed at all until a month after the call, per the NYT.

Now, sure, the NYT is hardly a trust-worthy source...but they wouldn't report anything that wouldn't harm Trump.

So, point out where you have tried to hold the FISA abusers responsible then.

Yup my outrage is selective, as is the outrage of every single living human being. I get more outraged over certain things more than others.

And yes my outrage is more directed against the right-wing than the left-wing. Because it's the right-wing that is currently in charge. And it's being led by a particularly buffoonish and horrible human being.

So yes, you nailed it completely that time. Good job.

    Relatively speaking?

But Hillary paying Fusion GPS to get dirt on Trump from Russian intelligence is totally okay and nothing to even look into. These people have gone barking mad. They used to just be stupid and dishonest. Trump has driven them into madness.

        1. John   6 years ago

And the FBI using FISA to spy on Trump. This thing was clearly planned and created out of nothing. it was meant to distract the public from something. Maybe the US attorney out in Utah is about to indict someone. Or maybe Trump is closing in on the DNC server. This didn't just come out of nowhere. The Democrats are panicked about something.

Clearly based on Obama's video with former Ukraine President and the Biden family being involved in the area, Lefties wrongly assumed Ukraine would be part of Russia by now and all the evidence washed away.

Now that Putin's puppet in Ukraine is gone and Ukraine is siding with the USA, the alarm bells have went off at the DNC.

Democrat illegal activity typically has co-conspirators. Its the co-conspirators involved with Hunter Biden and Joe Biden that are scared shitless.

It's like the violent criminals that didn't know DNA was a thing and left a bunch of DNA at crime scenes before 1990s. Now they are scared shitless that evidence being used to catch them before they die as free men.

So we have a transcript of the actual phone call and the testimony of everyone involved or with first hand knowledge of the issue and none of that shows any evidence of wrong doing. Against all that, we have a someone who heard a rumor from someone that they can't name.

This shit would make the prosecutors at Stalin's show trials blush.

Yea, but look who they're playing too: the Jeffs of the world

        1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

Sure. The transcript shows "no evidence of wrong doing" because it didn't use the literal words QUID PRO QUO in bold text, repeated multiple times, and Trump saying "JUST TO BE CLEAR, I'M BRIBING YOU".

And even then I'm sure you all would find a way to argue that Trump didn't really *mean* it.

          1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

So tell us where we can find what it is Trump wanted in return. So far, and granted it's only a transcript of one call, I haven't seen any request for anything in return.

Just because you can imagine a plausible scenario, doesn't mean it's true.

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

              3. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

If all this is so obvious, then you should be able to do better than that.

He hasn't yet. I think he is well aware he is on the wrong side of this, it's why all you see from him is snark and insinuation

              4. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

TrickyVic, you're right in that Trump did not explicitly say on the phone call, I WANT YOU TO DO THIS THING FOR ME IN EXCHANGE FOR THE MONEY. Trump is smarter than that.

Trump asked for two favors, then dispatched Giuliani off to meet with them. All while the money was being held up. Not long after, the money was released.

Here is a detailed timeline of events:
                https://www.justsecurity.org/66271/timeline-trump-giuliani-bidens-and-ukrainegate/

If the only evidence you will accept is Trump saying directly to Zelenskyy, "I'M BRIBING YOU", then yeah that isn't going to be forthcoming.

                1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

""If the only evidence you will accept is Trump saying directly to Zelenskyy, “I’M BRIBING YOU”, then yeah that isn’t going to be forthcoming.""

You criticism and misguided beliefs of what I'll accept are not evidence.

                  1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

Well, the transcript has been posted.
I also posted a detailed timeline of what happened:

                    https://www.justsecurity.org/66271/timeline-trump-giuliani-bidens-and-ukrainegate/

Putting the two together, it looks like Trump asked for favors during the call, and then dispatched Giuliani in person in order to fulfill the terms of those favors.

Sure, it COULD be all innocent and nothing at all happened. If you give Trump and Giuliani the benefit of the doubt. I see no reason to do that here.

                    1. JesseAz   6 years ago

This is conjecture you fucking retard.

"then dispatched Giuliani in person in order to fulfill the terms of those favors."

It is the sum of your whole accusation.

                    2. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

Okay, so what do you think Giuliani was doing in Madrid in early August, meeting with Ukrainian representatives?

Especially considering Giuliani had canceled a trip earlier in the year that was explicitly about trying to dig up dirt on Democrats.

                    3. Caught Wearing Trudeauface   6 years ago

"Putting the two together, it looks like"

This is why you shouldn't fabricate arguments Jeff. You did and now, because you do, any speculation by you is worthless.

You could have humbly admitted your mistake. Now you're just a liar.

                    4. Caught Wearing Trudeauface   6 years ago

"Okay, so what do you think Giuliani was doing in Madrid"

That's not evidence nor is speculation about it.

This is why you're so reluctant to actually engage with this discussion, especially about evidence. You know you have a shit pile worth nothing. It's why you've been sarcastically casting aspersions all morning.

                    5. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

Giuliani outright boasted that he was going to Europe to dig up dirt on Democrats. It's not even a secret.

                    6. JesseAz   6 years ago

When you ask "what do you think he was doing" you are asking for conjecture. Do you not know what the word means?

                    7. A Whole AirBnb to Myself   6 years ago

Giuliani + Spain + diggin up dirt = impeach Trump for Ukraine.

Make the math work and don't sound like a waterhead.

Do you have a better timeline?
Do you have evidence demonstrating events on the timeline are misrepresented
I don't claim that they are the ultimate authority, only that it is a good summary of events.

                    4. A Whole AirBnb to Myself   6 years ago

No Jeff, you admitted you misinterpreted when you got "permanently" wrong, so your attempt to summarize by snark or saying "Translation" is to be judged in light of your history of being wrong with such things.

You're literally crying about your own admission.

          2. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Poor Jeffrey should just stick to something he can do well.

We at reason don't know what that is, as it sure as hell is not careful analysis of news or in this case non-news.

          3. NOYB2   6 years ago

Even if he had pressured them, what exactly is wrong with an investigation of the Bidens?

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

Nothing is wrong with an investigation into the Bidens. What they did smells fishy too.

The pressuring bit, however, is just a wee bit problematic.

              1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

The current document does not show any evidence of pressure being applied whatsoever. Period. But if you have other evidence, evidence, not your opinion, I would like to see it.

                1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

Look, if you are only going to accept Trump stating in words "I'M PRESSURING YOU" then yeah you'll be disappointed.

                  But this is the timeline:
                  - He delays the money
                  - He says "I have a few favors to ask of you"
                  - He dispatches his lawyer
                  - Lawyer meets with them
                  - He releases the money

                  1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

""Look, if you are only going to accept Trump stating in words “I’M PRESSURING YOU” then yeah you’ll be disappointed."'

Once again misrepresenting. Being that you will misrepresent my opinion, I can assume you would misrepresent other things too.

A timeline in and of itself doesn't prove anything.

                    1. Caught Wearing Trudeauface   6 years ago

A speculation about timeline isn't even evidence.

                    2. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

I said "IF you will only accept..." I didn't state it as if it were your opinion. Geez lighten up a little bit.

You are right that the timeline doesn't PROVE anything.

                    3. Caught Wearing Trudeauface   6 years ago

                      It isn't even evidence.

                    4. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

You create a scenario in you own mind about what I would accept, and disappointed about. I'm just pointing that out. I'm not going to crucify you with it.

""You are right that the timeline doesn’t PROVE anything.""

A timeline isn't even evidence. It's a use the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.

                    5. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

No, the timeline is EVIDENCE. It is not PROOF. It demonstrates the sequence of events.

                    6. A Whole AirBnb to Myself   6 years ago

No Jeff, the speculation necessary to construct it excludes it as evidence.

                      Come the fuck on man.

                    7. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

""It demonstrates the sequence of events.""

It's your speculation that is interpreting what the sequence of means. Absent your interpretation, the sequence is not evidence of anything other than a sequence.

Look up post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy

Please. It's like you think no one remembers you tripping over yourself to cry about Oberlin getting jackhammered.

                1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

See there you go. Another example of where I'm called a "lefty" because I didn't endorse the ridiculous right-wing position.

Oberlin was a left-right culture war issue. The protestors were the ones who caused harm to the business in question. Officials at the school had only a minor role, if any. But because Oberlin the college was found guilty, I'm supposed to rejoice? Well yeah, if I were a tribal red-teamer who celebrates whenever any leftie gets their comeuppance. But I'm not. The protestors should have been the ones on the hook, not the college. The college had deep pockets and so that is why they suffered the judgment.

"See there you go. Another example of where I’m called a “lefty” because I didn’t endorse the ridiculous right-wing position"

You're called a lefty because you do things like defend them incessantly, and use government to destroy your enemies, like you're doing now, over a fake dossier and gossip.

It's like you think we weren't here for "Russia" and didn't see you eat that giant shit pile up and ask for seconds.

                  2. Red Rocks White Privilege   6 years ago

Oberlin was a left-right culture war issue.

Manufacturing a hate hoax and trying to get a long-time small business to go bankrupt is a culture war issue?

Another example of where I’m called a “lefty” because I didn’t endorse the ridiculous right-wing position.

Please. You were crying like a bitch about it and desperately trying to minimize the role that Oberlin and its administrators played in the protests.

But because Oberlin the college was found guilty, I’m supposed to rejoice?

When Oberlin facilitates defamation, yes, you are, you dumbfuck waste of carbon molecules.

The protestors should have been the ones on the hook, not the college.

Since the college was involved, yes, they should have. You're just pissed that your lefty boos got cornholed.

                    1. Caught Wearing Trudeauface   6 years ago

                    2. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

The punishment was disproportionate to the level of involvement that Oberlin itself had to the commission of the crime. That was my entire argument and it still is. That is a fair reading of what happened. It was the STUDENTS who committed the crime and Oberlin itself had a very small role in matters.

You were crying like a bitch about it and desperately trying to minimize the role that Oberlin and its administrators played in the protests.

No. I was stating fairly what Oberlin did. You were EXAGGERATING and OVERPLAYING what Oberlin did, because Oberlin is a perceived enemy of the right. I didn't join in the right-wing chorus and that is why you call me a lefty. Period.

I didn't vote for Trump and won't now.

          2. Caught Wearing Trudeauface   6 years ago

So, what do you think you're doing RIGHT NOW?

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

Right now, I'm opposing corrupt activities within my own government.

That some lefties happen to agree with my position on this immaterial. Some righties also agree with my position on this.

Moreover, that lefties agree with me that corruption by the President is bad, it does not automatically mean that I now agree with lefties that, say, the Green New Deal is a good idea.

See how that works? Good. Now take your meds.

              1. Caught Wearing Trudeauface   6 years ago

"Right now, I’m opposing corrupt activities within my own government"

Over a fake dossier and second hand gossip. You're not opposing corrupt activities, you're being a useful tool for the left.

"That some lefties happen to agree with my position"

Total coincidence. It happens constantly, and rarely if ever the other way, but just a total coincidence.it's lotke you literally have no self awareness and think you aren't actually a prog who doesn't want to admit it.

So why didn't those officials file a whistleblower complaint? Since they are not the complainant, I don't think they get anonymity like the complainant does.

  31. Idle Hands   6 years ago

I want to remind people that before this whistleblower thing broke not only was trump was reaching as high as 53% approval from noted conservative shill polling rasmussen. But was getting consistantly above 48% from more neutral outlets. It was so bad WAPO had an article about it Sunday pointing to anonymous signs for dems. Trumps approval was higher than Obamas at this point 2011. So that's kind of what this was all about. Whistlblower's lawyers comes from an outfit that pays for leaks and has worked closely with dems in the past.

    1. Idle Hands   6 years ago

I don't think they ever thought he'd release the transcript. So this backfired on them, but they needed something. I just can't get over the knee capping of Biden to do it.

      1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Trump is really good at flipping the script on Lefties. He knows that he is clean, so anytime the Lefties trying to get shit to stick to walls, Trump dumps something that hurts Lefties.

As you said, Lefties didn't think Trump would release the actual transcripts. Trump looks at this as an excellent opportunity to get others looking at Joe Biden and Hunter Biden and it had nothing to do with Trump doing it or his campaign. Its fucking genius!

Hillary tried this tactic with the pee dossier and British/Russian spies and it backfired.

So let me understand this...whistleblower laws allow an anonymous witness to accuse someone of criminal behavior based on hearsay evidence, and this is a good thing under a legal system where the accused has a right to face their accuser?

  33. grb   6 years ago

Considered as a practical matter, for a scandal to take hold several things must happen :

    (1) It mustn't burn out early, but have new fuel to feed the fire. The news today includes multiple reports of Trump attempts to make the Ukrainians service his needs dating back to April. The whistleblower complaint includes many new details as well.

    (2) It mustn't be vulnerable to a he-said/she-said counterattack : The call transcript accomplished that on its own, but the whistleblower complaint also included names of multiple witnesses, some of whom the Inspector General has already interviewed.

    (3) It mustn't be vulnerable to a counter-narrative. The Right's meme on Biden firing Shokin is a nonstarter, at odds with a Mt Everest of documented facts. It was a nonstarter yesterday and will be likewise tomorrow. Read Rightists who feel the need to be "serious" vs "fever swamp" (I use the National Review) and you see it already written off.

    (4) Having the scandal party act guilty is pure gold. The whistleblower complaint includes details of how records of the Ukrainian call was treated differently than any corresponding call. These details are factual : It can be established if they happened or not. The complaint names people who reacted to Trump's transgressions with panic and attempted a clean-up.

    (5) Finally, there is a marker in the reaction of the scandal party's supporters. The spittle-spraying sputtering rage of Trump toadies in these comments is a klaxon-horn of desperation.

It also has good entertainment value......

But you already made clear he would lose in 2020 regardless, because he caused a harsh recession.

You need to stop thinking about impeachment in terms of how it might affect 2020. Again, 2020 was always a lock for Democrats because incumbent parties simply cannot win in an economy this bad. Instead, impeachment should be viewed as the only appropriate response to #TrumpRussia and #TrumpUkraine. (And the concentration camps too.)

At this point, as soon as I read the accusing words "Trump said...", my eyes glaze over. It's always something from the accusers, and usually something retarded. Shouting "Squirrel!" and pointing randomly is more rational than what they're doing. Who knows? At some point, Trump might actually do something illegal but by then, nobody even marginally sane will be listening anymore.

Would it be too much trouble for the whole pack of deranged democrats to take a timeout to read "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" and perhaps reflect, for just a moment, on what they're doing? Alas, I suspect it would.

If your team did the exact same thing would you be in a tizzy or would you dismiss it? Everyone here knows you would dismiss it. Because your team has no principles other than might makes right.

              1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

True story. Bill Clinton extorted his biggest critic Robert (Say) McIntosh into staying silent when Clinton ran for president.

McIntosh's kid was arrested for cocaine possession. Some say the arrest was political, but perhaps it was really valid. Clinton tells McIntosh that if he keeps his mouth shut he would get his son out of prison early.

              2. Tony   6 years ago

My team can't so much as send a personal email on a work account without it being a cosmic scandal.

I picked a team because it is more moral, has standards of decency, has actual ideas instead of retarded agitprop, and can't commit vast crimes and misdemeanors and be forgiven by the "moral arbiters" of our society.

                Fix your own self, son.

            2. John   6 years ago

No he didn't. There is absolutely no evidence of that. Moreover, the Democrats spent the entire 2016 election working with the Russians to get dirt on Trump. So, you can't claim to be so upset about Trump supposedly doing it if you didn't care when democrats did it, and you didn't.

Trump released the transcript. There is nothing there. The President of Ukraine says Trump never pressured him to do anything. The only evidence Trump did comes from a single person with no firsthand knowledge of the issue who says he heard a rumor that this happened. Literally he says he heard from someone, whom he can't name, that this happened.

Tony, as much as I kick you around, you are not completely brain dead. You know that this is bullshit. You only claim it isn't because it allows you to have delusions of grandeur about your politics. You are not convincing anyone and you just look crazy. Moreover, telling yourself lies is never good. Just for once in your life face reality as it is.

            3. damikesc   6 years ago

Tony, there is literally zero evidence of this. At all.

              1. Tony   6 years ago

                Except for the transcripts.

            4. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

""Trump extorted a foreign head of state in order to get dirt on his political opponent.""

Except the person you say was extorted disagrees when he said no one pressures him but his 6 year old daughter. When an alleged victim disagrees about what happen, a case is usually dropped. So no extortion.

If using foreign entities to get dirt on your political opponent when you are an active member of government is unlawful then you would have to admit Hillary broke that law when her campaign paid for the Steele dossier.

      4. I'm Not Sure   6 years ago

I think it has to do with the inability of progressives to accept that the people who they dismiss as hicks in flyover country rejected The Most Qualified Candidate Ever in favor of Donald Trump. When your entire political platform consists of cramming your preferred policies down the throats of unwilling people you condescendingly relate to as inferiors, it's certainly got to be disorienting to find yourself on the losing end when the votes are all tallied.

        1. John   6 years ago

I think that is part of it. And also that they get their entire sense of self worth from their politics. If Trump is just a President they don't like, then they are not special. If he is the worst thing ever, then they are special people fighting the noble fight against evil. It is pathetic. But such are the wages of getting your self worth from your politics.

          1. I'm Not Sure   6 years ago

"And also that they get their entire sense of self worth from their politics."

There's the problem right there. How sad is it, that your self worth is defined by your ability to force unwilling people to do things they don't want to, because you know better than they do what's in their own best interest?

This. As a somewhat old fart, I find their constant wailing that we are living in some sort of horrible Dark Ages pathetic and amusing. The 1970s were worse, and we survived that and even had some good times.

        1. John   6 years ago

That is exactly it sarcasmic. Leftists believe the validity of your position is determined by your character not the merits of the position itself. If you are a bad person in their view, you are wrong regardless of the facts or logic.

The case of the kid in Iowa who raised all of the money for the children's hospital is a perfect example of that. A non leftist sees that as a feel good story and doesn't even think to wonder what his "character" is like. The leftist reporter looked at him and thought "what if he is a bad person or holds wrong opinions? We need to do a background check". It is sick.

Guilty of what? You can't seem to explain that. You have the man, now you are going to find the crime. You are all about the "Rule of Law" you know.

Abuse of power, John. God, you guys are dumb. Want some links?

        1. John   6 years ago

Abuse of power that you can't name. You people are lunatics.

Deleting Emails under subpoena is obstruction of justice. But I don't see you complaining about that.

"Ahh yes- so obstructed clearly in the first investigation"
      Bullshit claim

"and then thought, why not invite more foreign interference?"
      And more bullshit.
Did you have a point, other than making bullshit claims?

A merry band of pro-Trump commenters, who seem to not have any other demands on their time, have moved into the Reason commentariat in the past few months.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D–Hawaii) continues to strike a different note on impeachment than her Democratic presidential competitors:

    Tulsi! Tulsi! Tulsi!

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   6 years ago

Pretty hilarious how the DNC is blind to the fact that a lot of people across the aisle would be perfectly fine with Tulsi beating Trump in 2020, despite the fact that she supports a lot of stupid shit being pushed by the party at large.

      1. John   6 years ago

Gabbard as President with a Republican Congress would not be the worst outcome, especially if RBG keels over and is replaced by Trump before he leaves office. I would prefer Trump but I would take Gabbard and a R Congress over any of the other Democratic candidates by a mile and then some.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   6 years ago

There's really nothing that Trump could hammer her on that would do much in the way of damage. Call her a cult member? Who gives a shit? At least she's shown evidence at moderating her positions, can talk to the few remaining white working class members of the party who haven't jumped ship without coming across as condescending, and most important (to me, anyway), she's openly calling for the end of American interventionism in the Middle East. And unlike Trump, there won't be a lot of neocons orbiting around her trying to convince her that the party rank-and-file would think that pulling out of there would be disrespectful to the troops.

This woman gutted Kamala Harris, a media and DNC darling, on national TV. Trump's carny act wouldn't faze her a bit.

  47. Tony   6 years ago

The Johns of the world think that we're out for political gain because that's the only value that the Johns of the world retain, and they can't imagine other people actually possessing a moral core. Let's call it psychopathy+.

Does it really matter if John actually believes that Hillary Clinton ran a child sex slave ring from a pizza restaurant? It's the difference between stupidity and mendacity. Who gives a fuck. You're irrelevant to the world except to the extent that you are destroying it for no other reason than protecting your provincial horseshit beliefs from reality.

Trump is a great president. The greatest. He says so. And what is a libertarian but a person who believes everything that comes out of the mouth of a fake-baked demented political leader?

    1. damikesc   6 years ago

"Does it really matter if John actually believes that Hillary Clinton ran a child sex slave ring from a pizza restaurant?"

Good lord, is Mr "RUSSIA! RUSSIA! RUSSIA!" actually mocking somebody for believing a laughable conspiracy theory (that he, to the best of my knowledge, never once claimed to believe)?

      1. sarcasmic   6 years ago

Tony is an expert straw man slayer.

      2. Tony   6 years ago

What are you asserting is false about the Mueller report?

        I'll wait.

    2. Incomprehensible Bitching   6 years ago

Tell us all how morality works, Tony.

    3. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

Riiiiiight... Impeachment at this stage of the game is the moral center of the Democratic party coming to the fore. It has nothing to do with attempting to muck with what is an increasingly likely Trump re-election in 2020 due to the hilariously awful DNC front-runners- and their mostly awful back-bench.

      But sure, Biden's your man.

      1. damikesc   6 years ago

Hell, the Dems were able to see the future, given that impeachment resolutions were being passed Trump's first month in office.

        1. damikesc   6 years ago

          Sorry, proposed. Not passed.

    4. John   6 years ago

No one on here has ever claimed that Hillary Clinton ran a sex ring. Again Tony, you just lie to yourself to feel important and avoid reality.

  48. Jerryskids   6 years ago

Build the wall, lock her up, drain the swamp, burn it all down.

The wall's not built, she's not locked up, the swamp's not drained - guess we're moving on to burning it all down.

You know why the Trumpalos support Trump no matter what? Because they don't give a fuck about the Rule of Law. Know why they don't give a fuck about the Rule of Law? Because people like Hillary Clinton skate on shit that would get one of the Little People thrown under the jail because the Rule of Law only applies to the Little People. I mean, day after day we see the Brickbats here on Reason where the King's Men get away with shit no mundane would be allowed to get away with - how long do you expect people to play by the rules when it's obvious the other side doesn't play by the rules?

It's the same reason people support the crazies like Bernie Sanders - literally anything is better than the fucked-up shit we got going on now in Washington. Why not steal and lie and cheat and rape and pillage while we're at it? Our Lords and Masters get away with it, it's our turn now.

Go ahead and impeach Trump, we've tried the soap box and the ballot box and you're rigging the jury box, you know what comes next. Trump is not destroying America - he's the last hope for saving it. The fact that a fucking avowed socialist is seriously in the running for the highest office in the land rather than standing barefoot on a street corner drunkenly yelling at pigeons is a pretty good indication that she ain't worth saving.

    1. Sevo   6 years ago

"You know why the Trumpalos support Trump no matter what? Because they don’t give a fuck about the Rule of Law."

      You should seek treatment.

        Sevo,

You missed the part where he said:

Trump is not destroying America – he’s the last hope for saving it. The fact that a fucking avowed socialist is seriously in the running for the highest office in the land rather than standing barefoot on a street corner drunkenly yelling at pigeons is a pretty good indication that she ain’t worth saving.

I have seen JK post some knee-jerk reactionary comments, but this is an astute observation borne of frustration with the shitshow that is American politics today. I even like the way he phased it.

Civil discourse requires listening (or reading) to the end of the comment before deciding whether you agree or disagree. Otherwise, you just look like a dick.

    Whisteblower complaint released:

Hmm, got the basic timeline of the call wrong. Of course, the whistleblower didn't HEAR the call or SEE the transcript. His info is, of course, second hand. (complained Trump brought up Giuliani and the Biden investigation. He did neither, for example).

Complaints that Trump classified the transcript "too highly" basically. Seems like a lame complaint given that the IC has LEAKED info in calls between Trump and world leaders. I'd have advised him to classify all such material very, very highly.

Complaints about Rudy Giuliani based on THIRD hand accounts (people heard from other people). Referencing Ferris Bueller's Day Off don't seem out of bounds. People told other people who told the complainer that there were concerns about national security. Nobody DIRECTLY involved seems to agree.

  50. LeaveTrumpAloneLibertarian   6 years ago

If only Trump had typed out “Hey Ukrainian President. I need a favor. Mugsy across the street has been saying bad things about me. Can you look into what his son has been doing. I heard he was in your country. I’ll send my lawyer over there to help you’se out. I’ve got a bunch of missiles and crap in it for you” on his phone with an old OS version while not running a VPN then you guys would be upset. I got it.

    1. Sevo   6 years ago

If only you had one bit of evidence, then maybe those who are not fucking lefty ignoramuses would believe you bullshit.
      You don't. They don't.
      Fuck off and die.

      1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

Funny how some people have such a low bar to believe shit, but then raise the bar when their party is in power.

        1. damikesc   6 years ago

Hillary didn't break any laws. Some of those emails didn't say "classified" on them. How was somebody who had a role in CLASIFYING emails supposed to know that they were classified or not?

So, this is interesting. As of this morning I cannot reply to anything under my regular login. I checked my comments from yesterday and the comment I posted under Ronald Bailey's article on AGW yesterday shows 'Your comment has been flagged for moderation', but it contained no links (nor profanity, nor off-topic commentary). Ron Bailey even responded directly to my comment in the thread. That entire comment thread including my comment and Ron's reply are not visible when not logged in to that account.

I have seen my comments flagged before when trying to post multiple links, but it never prevented me from making new comments.

"Whistleblower Report Alleges Trump Used Presidential Power for Personal Gain"

Seeing as he is the president and as a result has presidential power I think anything he does could potentially provide him with personal gain since he is a US citizen.
According to the transcript of the phone call it looks like the "presidential power" he used was being able to get a phone call with the Ukrainian president. (I've been trying for weeks and he won't pick up or return my calls)
If you're the president, call a president of another country, and inquire about something a US citizen did then, well, who cares? How is that a no-no?
