Some Democrats Ditch Biden After First Round of 2020 Debates
Plus: protests in Hong Kong intensify, Antifa at it again, and more...

Harris up, Biden down, while Bernie gets mixed results. For many American voters, last week's debates between the 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls served as a first introduction to candidates other than former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.). As a result, Biden's dominance among Democratic voters may have slipped.
Biden is still the top choice among Democratic primary voters, according to a new Morning Consult poll. But he's down five points in the organization's first post-debate survey, while Sen. Kamala Harris (D–Calif.) gained points.
The poll, conducted last Thursday night and Friday among 2,407 Democrats, found Harris—who raised $2 million in 24 hours with a t-shirt quoting her debate swipe at Biden—up 6 percent from Morning Consult's June 17-23 poll. In the latest poll, 12 percent of respondents now cast her as their first choice. (All those whoppers must have worked.)
Meanwhile, Biden went from top choice among 38 percent of respondents to top choice among 33 percent.
Numbers for Sanders stayed the same post-debate (19 percent say he's their top choice), but he did see a 7 percent drop in favorability, the largest favorability drop of any candidate. Sen. Cory Booker (D–N.J.) also remained steady at 3 percent.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.) and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg each saw a drop of 1 percent (less than the poll's margin of error). Warren stands at 12 percent now, and "Mayor Pete" at 6 percent.
Polls this early don't tell us much about what will ultimately happen, but they do give us a hint at how liberal moods might shift with more exposure to the Democratic candidates.
"The post-debate survey has a 2-point margin of error, compared with a 1-point margin of error for the pre-debate survey conducted among 16,888 registered voters who indicated they may vote in the Democratic primary or caucus in their state," notes Morning Consult.
QUICK HITS
- President Donald Trump is once again meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un.
- Pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong are reaching a new intensity, as crowds "smashed the windows of Hong Kong's legislature on Monday [and] attempted to storm the building," reports CNBC. While "citizens of Hong Kong—a Special Administrative Region of China—rally on this day each year to demand for democracy," today's events follow a round of "recent protests, which started in early June, against the government's proposed extradition bill. The controversial law would pave the way for people arrested in Hong Kong to stand trial in mainland China."
- Antifa is at it again.
- Some deep cuts on Biden and busing.
- Russians are rejecting American fashion.
- Sigh: "The notion that the law should treat a fetus like a person is widely held in Alabama."

True libertarian: He's not really a "joiner".
Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren are basically tied as my first choice for 2020. I especially like that Harris is proposing the return of busing to combat segregation in schools.
#LibertariansForBusing
That was a fun Twitter thread.
"Bring back bussing!"
Ok, Kamala, question:
If bussing is such a good idea, why do we need to do it again 50 years later?
Look, I think you're viewing this from the wrong perspective. The purpose of solutions isn't to change things or fix the problem. The purpose of solutions is to be seen to be doing something.
You can't stop doing something. That would imply you don't care anymore. You also can't solve the problem, because if you solve the problem, how can you be seen to be doing something about the problem?
You ever notice that the new crosstown bussing proponents don't have any children?
Probably because public schools in the Black communities are a disaster and a failure, They have no solutions other than to try busing again. Even though busing didn't do anything to improve anything. Harris btw was the daughter of a Research Scientist for U Cal Berkeley and an Economics Professor at Stanford who moved to that den of racial injustice, Quebec at the age of 12. From Berkeley to Quebec please tell me how she had a bad experience?
Reason contributor Tyler Cowen likes Kamala Harris and Marianne Williamson.
The liberaltarian consensus is shaping up to be anyone but Tulsi.
I've been puzzled by that for quite a while. It appears the DNC has had it in for Tulsi from the get-go. Do they just automatically dismiss military veterans?
The Democrats are just as much the party of endless war as any Neocon. Their reaction to Gabbard proves this beyond doubt.
From the clips I've seen, Gabbard rocked that debate, even though the patriarchal sexist Dem media hardly gave her any screen time.
She should show more cleavage.
2016 made it plain that the DNC considers it a selection process, not an election one.
It's not her turn!!!!!
The fact that the establishment is so anti-Tulsi shoes where their bread is buttered. No industry relies more on the government than the military-industrial complex.
Except the welfare industrial complex
It’s not just a coincidence that the last democratic party president who did military service in any capacity was Jimmy Carter almost 40 years ago.
Liberals despise the military, especially the volunteers.

"Reason contributor Tyler Cowen likes Kamala Harris and Marianne Williamson. The liberaltarian consensus is shaping up to be anyone but Tulsi."
Tyler Cowen is a technocrat elitist through and through. He's nothing close to a libertarian of any stripe.
So is most of the current Reason Staff including Nick who now treasures he TV time on HBO.
I'm in favor of terminating public education and allowing the parents to pay for and choose where they want to send their kids.
Oh, wait.
There's no room for government interference there.
My bad.
We already have plenty of ignorance in this country. People will just as gladly not send their children to any school for fear of "liberal brainwashing" or any other number of stupid reasons. Look at the anti-vax movement for evidence of how stupid we still are.
Thanks but no thanks- the amount of ignorance we still have is staggering enough.
More bad economic news.
The U.S. Labor Market Isn’t all That Healthy
The labor market won't be healthy until a Democrat is back in the White House and the Koch / Reason open borders agenda is enacted.
#DrumpfRecession
Shouldn't that be "the the Koch / Reason / Soros open borders agenda" now?
“In the 21st century, libertarians are going to have make common cause with the globalists of all parties, with the people whose core value is the right of individuals to move freely around the planet…”
“…for all the other differences Reason has with the socialist magazine Jacobin, it may matter far more that we share a belief in open borders.”
- Nick Gillespie
OBL is Nick!
Yes next he will be defending ANTFA's right to beat up gay Conservative journalists as free speech against right wing fascism.
I suspect that some of Antifa's cheerleaders (i.e. the celebrities and politicians egging them on from the safety of their gated mansions) are hoping that the violence Antifa is engaging in will provoke a violent response.
Well, we were warned that if Trump became president, jack-booted, totalitarian thugs would be marching in the streets, and here they are...
We were also told that when the fascists came, they'd be called anti-fascists. Antifa took that as an instruction or command rather than a warning.
Williamson talks the exact kind of nonsense that would keep me entertained while leftists burned this country down with ridiculous spending combined with their plans to cancel citizenship.
At least if she was the democrat to win I could have a chuckle while in the bread line
Bread lines are good, because that means people are getting food, from the government no less. And no one is getting any more, or less, than anyone else. That's just for the prols, of course.
Comrade Bernie said so.
I liked one commenter on another site called her a representative of the “Yoko Ono Wing” of the Democrat Party.
So unsurprisingly , the Portland police stood by and let Andy Ngo get beat nearly into a coma. That is what fascism/communism looks like; state approved mob violence for political ends.
You really can't overstate what scumbags the major media actually are. The same people who claim Trump tweeting mean things about them is a threat to the Republic stand by and say nothing about a reporter being attacked by a mob or worse try and excuse it because "he wasn't a real reporter and was asking for it".
Good on Soave for not doing that. He is sadly a lone voice in a wilderness of cowardly, mendacious scumbags known as the media in this country.
So unsurprisingly , the Portland police stood by and let Andy Ngo get beat nearly into a coma. That is what fascism/communism looks like; state approved mob violence for political ends.
To be fair, the police understand that the Portland mayor is an Antifa sympathizer, and would crack down on them instantly if they tried to tard-wrangle the Antifans.
Left-wing mayors are not going to undermine their paramilitary stormtroopers.
This kind of nonsense went on in the South with the Klan. Situations where the local authorities sat by and let the mob terrorize people is what the Klan laws were designed to combat. The feds need to be using those laws and going after Antifa and all of their enablers in local government personally.
I liken "antifa" more to black and brown shirts than the KKK. Instead of focusing on suppression of certain classes of persons, they threaten anyone who disavows their ideology. Though, like the Klan, they do seem inclined to attack minorities.
Their ideology is different than the Klan's but their methods are the same. And the Klan laws were designed to go after the methods not the ideology.
Well put! They don't focus on race or religion, rather anyone who threatens their ideology which is just about anyone with a functioning brain.
Well put! They don't focus on race or religion, rather anyone who threatens their ideology which is just about anyone with a functioning brain.
Out on "social" media the Leftists are also engaging in vigorous whataboutism, screeching things like "Charlottesville! Charlottesville!".
(Never mind that the perpetrator of that act was arrested, tried, and convicted, and will be doing a life sentence.)
And nevermind that not a single person on the right ever played the “she was asking for it by being there” card or ever did anything but condemn that dirtbag and demand his prosecution
"Sigh: 'The notion that the law should treat a fetus like a person is widely held in Alabama.'"
What a powerful counter-argument to the idea that a 5-month-old fetus is a human person!
The article also suggests strongly that the Democratic DA is looking for a chance to drop or reduce the charges for the pregnant woman who allegedly started a fight and got herself shot, killing her child.
It seems that the grand jury didn't buy the police definition of the facts, according to which the shooter was the criminal.
Suppose they'd indicted the shooter, presumably that would also have been a homicide indictment for the death of that 5-month-old. How would that have been any better from the "pro-choice" standpoint? The fetus would still have been treated as a person. The question is that there seems to be a factual dispute over what actually happened, but the premise that this child is a person doesn't seem to be questioned - the mother had even given the fetus a name.
As I've said before, the only difference between a "baby" and "a clump of cells" is if the kid is actually wanted or not.
Wait, I see the difference - if the mother got her child killed, she would have merely been exercising her choice in "ending her pregnancy." But if it was the shooter's fault, the fetus would be just as dead, and just as much of a person, but at least the mother wouldn't be "unfairly persecuted" for her "reproductive choices."
And nevermind that not a single person on the right ever played the "she was asking for it by being there" card or ever did anything but condemn that dirtbag and demand his prosecution.
It was a fight between two women - the shooter and the pregnant woman. The cops seem to believe the shooter was the aggressor - the grand jury seems to have believed the pregnant woman was the aggressor and the shooter was defending herself against a violent assault.
"What a powerful counter-argument to the idea that a 5-month-old fetus is a human person!"
She's trolling you.
If supporting unrestricted abortion is wrong, she doesn't want to be right.
"The notion that the law should treat a fetus like a person is widely held in Alabama."
I learned in college that a fetus is just a clump of cells. Doesn't matter how far along the pregnancy is. The science is settled — life begins at birth.
Anyone who disagrees literally wants to turn this country into The Handmaid's Tale. (Which is why I can't comprehend Reason letting Stephanie Slade work here.)
#ILoveScience
Meanwhile, according to the 2016 Alabama Uniform Crime Report:
(1) in 2016, there were 40 arrests for inter-racial homicide, with blacks accounting for 31 of those arrests;
(2) in 2016, there were 260 arrests for inter-racial rape, with blacks accounting for 227 of those arrests.
Whites comprise 69% of Alabama's population while blacks constitute 26% of the population.

Biden doesn't and shouldn't be aggressive at this stage of the primary. He's up big in the poles any attack ads he runs or statement he makes against another candidate just raises their profile. Think all this is moot and meaningless this early.
"Blah blah bla- oh, my time's up."
-Joe Biden
"Up big in the poles" was my nickname when I studied political science in Warsaw.
"Pole up big" is Touchy Feely Joe's Indian name.
'The world is coming to an end, 'cause tech!!!': NYT
"In Streaming Age, Classical Music Gets Lost in the Metadata"
[...]
"When Roopa Kalyanaraman Marcello, a classical music aficionado in Brooklyn, asked her Amazon Echo for some music recently, she had a specific request: the third movement of Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto.
“It kind of energizes me, motivates me to get things done,” she said.
But the Echo, a voice-activated speaker, could not find what she wanted..."
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/23/business/media/stream-classical-music-spotify.html
I'm glad the NYT focuses on the important issues of out time.
It is time for classical music to die because it is "white and European" according to this "gay Lebonese composer living in Brooklyn. I am going to go out on a limb here and say his music isn't very good.
http://nmbx.newmusicusa.org/its-time-to-let-classical-music-die/
The CNN and MSNBC crowd, particularly the likes of Malcolm Nance, think an appreciation of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovksy signals is tantamount to being a Putin puppet.
#MoreMussorgskyplease
It is John Birch's world and we just live in it.
Agreed that it's not terribly important, but I listen to classical music on Spotify all the time, so maybe Alexa is just a philistine.
"Agreed that it’s not terribly important, but I listen to classical music on Spotify all the time, so maybe Alexa is just a philistine."
Actually, it looks like the author (in typical NYT fashion) made up a story and then found someone to back it:
"Sisario is whining about nothing much.
[...]
But really, classical music listeners are better off now than before the Internet. They have at their disposal many streaming services, not just YouTube, which allow them to listen wherever they happen to be, not just at home on their audio systems. And instead of having to buy a record in order to hear it, they can hear it for free on YouTube, or at a fraction of its retail cost on subscription services such as Spotify. Finding it is up to them, but good heavens, we're grown-ups, we don't need to be spoon-fed but can find it ourselves."

What good is a government snitch device if it can't even give you the bread and circuses you need to make your life of quiet desperation somewhat more tolerable?
To reiterate a point made over the weekend . . .
“CHICAGO (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Friday reported a large soybean sale to China, an apparent goodwill gesture a day before the first meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in seven months.
. . . .
The USDA said Chinese importers bought 544,000 tonnes of U.S. soybeans for shipment in the 2018/19 marketing year which expires Aug. 31. It was the largest U.S. soybean sale to China since late March, USDA data showed.
The USDA said in a statement the sale was new and not a change of destination of a previously announced sale.”
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trade-china-soybeans/usda-reports-large-us-soybean-sale-to-china-ahead-of-trump-xi-meeting-idUSKCN1TT2ET
Those soybean purchases have already been made. This is already alleviating the pressure on Trump in farming states ahead of his reelection campaign--which was China's most important leverage against him. Because the Chinese have already capitulated on that, I suspect the remaining obstacles on a trade deal have become minor. Emperor Xi's visit to North Korea ahead of the Japan summit almost certainly had an impact on Trump's conciliatory behavior over the weekend, in both North Korea and in dropping the threat of further tariffs for the time being. Looking at both oil prices and treasury yields this morning, the markets are pricing in a deal happening--and I see no reason to doubt their wisdom.
IF IF IF and when Trump comes away with a trade deal, the Democrats are probably fighting over who will get to lose to Trump in 2020. I'd like to see Trump win just so we can make the election about capitalism and trade vs. socialism and the welfare state.
"It is not enough for me to win. Others must also fail"
----Gore Vidal (from Ken's faulty memory)
It's not enough for Trump to win. I want the Democrats to fail--because of their socialism.
"It’s not enough for Trump to win. I want the Democrats to fail–because of their socialism."
Yes!
I don't like Trump, but I like the results of his oafishness. I sincerely wish the Democrats would nominate a sane person who is not captive to the racist mob but they won't.
With the reasons in the Midwest devastating this year's crops, I wondered if that would actually play well into the trade embargo (ie farmers collect insurance rather than be stuck with a glut of unsold product).
"Russians are rejecting American fashion."
Bad news for our track suit industry
And gold chain makers.
Trump is no dummy. Those guys need the Persian consumer now more than ever. "Did I saw attack Iran? Call it off General."
Don't confuse Russians with Chechens.
The article seems to be about falling ruble values, etc. making Russian fashion less expensive than luxury imports.
Here's the actual headline:
"Russian fashion follows inward turn of politics"
A currency collapse and the rise of streetwear boost domestic designers, but cumbersome regulations limit their growth.
https://www.voguebusiness.com/companies/russia-domestic-fashion-brands-streetwear
Her headline doesn't seem to describe the story. For all I know, average Russians hate us for other reasons, but I wouldn't root against their sports teams just because of ENB's headline.
RIP Justin Raimondo.
Second.
Watch it! You're trespassing on Virginia Postrel's territory!

i understand these were selling before the debate was even over.
"Kamala is a cop"?
President Donald Trump is once again meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un.
Has the courier been by Obama's house to retrieve the Nobel Peace Prize yet?
Our lefty troll turd (who seems to be absent again) has it that "Trump is cozying up" to Kim.
Dear ESL Speaker,
Please be advised that in this case, "like" expresses similarity, while "as" expresses identity.
Insofar as Alabamans believe that a fetus is a person, their demands are that the law treat it "as" a person, not "like" one.
And please, don’t be disheartened by this error! Remember, you can’t improve your grasp of English unless you practice, and practice means making mistakes.
Antifa is at it again.
At least it's not the celebs.
Biden won't get the democratic nomination.
He's old, white, and a heterosexual, three things the far left in the democratic party consider a pariah.
On an other note, let's trade Antifa thugs and ship them to the People's Republic of China and import all the citizens of Hong Kong.
Now that's a trade worth engaging in!
Aren't you ignoring the riots in Hong Kong where the mobs broke into and trashed the Legislative building?

I thought Paul Williams was dead.
And if this is his current schtick, he should be.
