Libertarian Presidential Candidates, on a Possible Justin Amash Run: 'That Would Be Amazing'
Competitors welcome chance to debate (and defeat!) the Republican congressman who is currently having a national moment.

"Justin Amash for President," reads the headline of a Daily Beast piece this morning from Matt Lewis. "A Change Conservatives Can Believe In."
After his electric town hall last night in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the libertarian Republican congressman is having a bit of a bipartisan moment. Founding Editor Charles Sykes of the #NeverTrump Bulwark today wrote about "Why Justin Amash Matters." Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D–Calif.) said during her own town hall last night on MSNBC that, "What he has done is what we need more people in the United States Congress to do, which is to put country before party." National Review writer and former 2016 trial-ballooned #NeverTrump presidential candidate David French said, "If Trump's the GOP nominee, I'd vote for @justinamash as the LP nominee in a heartbeat."
Ideologically unmoored Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin suggests Amash "buy ad time for 'Mueller Minutes' in which he can highlight some of Trump's egregious actions." And W. James Antle III, writing in The Week, urges a primary challenge within the GOP rather than a Quixotic third-party run.
So what about that third party? Here was Amash's answer last night to a question about running for president as a Libertarian in 2020:
is @justinamash going to run as a libertarian? he hasn't ruled it out, but this isn't a ploy to do so. pic.twitter.com/xaliyezHb0

Party leadership is openly courting Amash to enter the L.P. fray, which doesn't get sorted until May 2020. (Michigan's Republican primary is on March 10.) The lesser-known field of declared Libertarian presidential candidates, meanwhile, are—sometimes cheekily!—welcoming Amash into the fold.
Kim Ruff, a plastics/metals manufacturer and self-described "modern day 'Rosie the Riveter'" running atop a ticket with vice presidential nominee John Phillips, says bring it on:
"There are plenty of policy differences that I could debate the President on…"
Imagine this: President Ruff and Congressman Amash debating the finer points of #libertarian theory in a fireside chat -themed podcast. ????????????????????#ItCouldHappen #ReigniteLiberty @justinamash https://t.co/nmWekS1mcP

Adam Kokesh, the radical activist running on a platform of "dissolving the federal government in a peaceful, orderly manner," posted a welcome video last week, saying "Those of us who have already announced and are actively running for the Libertarian Party nomination for president are running as a team: We really are working together and supporting each other, and I know from talking to at least most of them that they would also welcome you and support you, and they want you to run for the nomination, they want you to be part of the Libertarian Party; think that would be amazing." Watch:
In a follow-up email to supporters, Kokesh expanded, albeit with a twist:
[T]here's no question that Amash is aligned with our shared principles. He is the most Libertarian member of Congress. Trained in Austrian Economics, his voting record supports his integrity on our issues.
Regarding the nomination, if he throws his hat in the ring, the media attention brought to the LP will be MASSIVE.
Amash would represent the "Never Trumpers" and be their best hope to beat Trump in 2020.
As the cameras roll, and the Trump-hating journalists wait with bated breath for our state chairs to count the ballots . . . they will be forced to announce the 2020 LP Presidential Candidate.
And with hard work and your support, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, the Washington Post, New York Times and others will run with the headline, "Libertarians Refuse to be Pawns, Nominate Adam Kokesh as Presidential Nominee."
Zing! (Emphases in original.)
I haven't seen any fresh commentary from controversialist Arvin Vohra, though he did tell me two months ago that "Justin Amash is the best member of Congress, no question," but "I don't think he's the person for a national level cultural war."
UPDATE: Souraya Faas, who I didn't know was running for the L.P. nomination (she ran as an independent write-in in the 2016 presidential race, and then received 16 percent of the vote in a 2018 Republican primary contest against then-incumbent Rep. Carlos Cubelo), has let me know that she issued a press release last week condemning Amash's call for impeachment, and demanding the resignation of Libertarian National Chair Nicholas Sarwark for allegedly endorsing the congressman, though Sarwark has not to my knowledge done so. Faas added that "the Mueller report only proved that Democrats especially Nancy Pelosi prefer to waste their time and energy showing the world that they are sore losers at the expense of hard working Amercians' tax paying dollars, rather than putting their ego and work together with the current administration in helping Make America Great Again!"
Meanwhile, supporters of Vermin Supreme demand a recount:

Running for president on the Libertarian Party line?
That is one hell of sad ending to what was a promising political career.
It worked out ok for Ron Paul.
Amash is co-owner of MIT, a tool company that owns Tekton, which illegally repackages chinese products claiming they were made in the US. That is why he is attacking trump. He is a criminal, not your hero. Anyone who supports him is clueless.

Big, if true.
Please provide some reliable sources for your claims.
He gave you enough information to go investigate yourself. Stop being intellectually lazy.
Heres the standard ay for the ignorantly lazy.
Ask for source.
Look at source link and dismiss the source without reading.
Stay with original belief.
If you Google the information you were given you can choose which source you want eliminating step 2. But we know that's not what you want. You want to be intellectually lazy.
"Ideologically unmoored Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin suggests Amash "buy ad time for 'Mueller Minutes' in which he can highlight some of Trump's egregious actions.""
That'd be nice, as he hasn't cited any specifics yet, to my knowledge. It's just been, "Trust me. I'm a lawyer".
He has cited many. Whether you agree with the rationale or not.
You, like all the fucking Rbots just have your nose up Trump's butt and your fingers in your ears yelling 'nahnahnah I can't hear you'. Weirdest looking ostrich behavior
Hey JewFree, can you point out on this map of Israel where mean old Mr. Trump 'bad touched' you?
Hey JewFree, can you point out on this map of Israel where mean old Mr. Trump ‘bad touched’ you?
Yup - you're making him look like the asshole.
That's all it's about for JewFree. If Trump wasn't keen on der Juden he'd be telling us all what a champ he is.
Amash hasn't cited anything specific against established law. He repeated a few items from Mueller but didnt explain how it was obstruction. Amash has also mentioned the constitution but ignores the fact that the president has the power to remove any executive member without question. Stop pretending Amash elucidated his position, he hasn't. It's a sophomoric argument he had made.
Poll: Would you vote for Amash or Trump in a 2-way Republican primary?
Amash (in a heartbeat)
I'm not a Trump hater by any stretch, but Amash, for sure.
Amash (in a heartbeat)
Seconded.
"Amash (in a heartbeat)"
Slightly better hair, and almost as honest.
Without a doubt Amash. Trump has like have a dozen positives and a truckload of negatives. It's the reverse for Amash.
Amash is nothing more than Jeff flake. Would you have voted for Flake?
As a Libertarian, I would vote Trump and likely will vote for Trump in 2020.
Trump has done more Libertarian-ish things in two years as President than most LINO politicians do their whole lives. This is while fighting off a coup, that almost worked and set a precedent for that being okay.
The stuff that I dont like about Trump's actions like the bump stock ban can easily be reversed with a pen and phone.
I wont vote for anybody who believes in political prosecutions of opponents.
>>>Trained in Austrian Economics
hurl.
>>>libertarian Republican congressman
incompatible by definition.
Yes, run on a campaign of "Trump is a criminal", right after an investigation proved otherwise. That will go well.
Lots of the authoritarian libertarians seem to believe this is the way to go in this comment section. I did like Faas' stance in the update. How any libertarian can look at the Mueller investigation as a good thing is beyond me. It was literally the political investigation of a man, not a crime. Mueller and comey both admit it was a "counter intelligence" investigation which is not an investigation of a crime or action. And now Amash wants to prosecute for a non criminal action? Truly a strong libertarian. Castro and stalin nod approvingly.

This shows the real problem with the LP's scheduling. They ignore the only time when they could actually get the attention of a)people who pay attention to issues/etc and b)people with experience/skill in the organizational stuff of campaigns - which is primary season. So the DeRps vacuum up those two groups of people without ANY competition or even awareness that there is an alternative.
And what's left for the LP's when they start is a)political losers from the DeRps who got primaried, b)an activist electorate that has already decided to go completely DeRp and buys their agenda, and c)a general electorate that is only swayable by very expensive mass ad wholesale campaigning where the donor class has also gone completely DeRp.
The LP essentially commits political suicide every election with this schedule. It's uphill anyway with ballot access rules - but primary season is also EXACTLY the time when unaligned folks or new voters might get interested and sign ballots. I don't understand the LP strategy.
I find it stunning how LP can't see the benefit of having its own 'primary debates' during primary season - which could easily be in the form of true Lincoln-Douglas debates rather than join press conferences.
Leverage Tulsi Gabbard talking about non-intervention by showing that that view is not unique or weird. Leverage Elizabeth Warren talking about wealth tax with some Georgist libertarian where the discussion is not about how to spend more but about how to restructure taxes (ie a wealth tax gets combined with a massive reduction in marginal income tax rates) so we can spend LESS. Leverage Bernie Sanders talking about cronyism - with a very different way of dealing with that. Leverage all the D's hypocrisy on social issues as they are obligated to obfuscate everything in order to get their big tent. Leverage the lack of primary on the R side to hammer on actually reducing spending while Trump promises to increase spending on this or that.
Primary season is the only true political season where discussion can occur and grassroots surprises can happen. After that, it's all just a big money wholesale circus - and the L's can NEVER win that donor class.
What happens the moment he criticizes a Democrat?
The press et al turned McCain and Romney into bigoted Nazis, after all.
His national moment is because he's bashing Trump.
+1
It would also be entertaining if Amash praised Trump for the libertarian things he has done.
+1000
Hes following the Flake method, wont happen.
This whole Amash obstruction-impeachable-offense-town-hall-look-at-me thing just makes me think of this.
President Ruff and Congressman Amash debating the finer points of #libertarian theory in a fireside chat -themed podcast.
BARF!
The only moment he is having is on this site. He's a nobody that reason has desperately latched on to.
Libertarian Presidential Candidates, on a Possible Justin Amash Run: 'That Would Be Amazing'
That is amazing! I expected them to say, “That would be faaaaabulous, daaaahlings!”.
I think Zman got Amash, and Reason, right in this podcast.
http://thezman.com/wordpress/?p=17528
Libertarian bashing starts at 12:00.
Ideologically unmoored Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin...
I would have just said unhinged, but yours works too.
Well we all knew this moment was coming when Amash started posturing and misquoting the Mueller Report and Reason decided to go All Amash, All the Time.
Amash - "Hi Reason, my name is Justin and I'm a Republican, but I'll publicly damn Trump if you support my presidential run."
Reason - "Will you pretend to be libertarian? We're still pretending we aren't just about hedonism and far-left social and economic policy"
Amash - Sure
*Handshakes*
*5000 Welch and Boehm love paeans later...*
"Possible Justin Amash Run: 'That Would Be Amazing'"
Yup. Reason has never mentioned Amash before. And Amash has never expressed any sympathy with libertarianism before. This is just a mis-named Progressive SJW site. You are free to return to Breitbart and not come here any more.
Liberty = slavery, eh?
Reflexively progressive all the way
It's cute that you are for prosecuting people for non crimes. How liberty oriented you are.
And what in his posts gave you that idea?
But it's cute that Reason is for enslaving current and future generations. And unlike your delusions, the Reason writers really are.
+100
If he runs he will get less votes than Gary Johnson. I am hoping for more limited government candidates in the house and senate. He will likely just give up his seat to someone more establishment or worse.
[…] All of which contributes to speculation that the Republican who prefers the word “libertarian” over the phrase “libertarian-leaning conservative” will finally bolt the GOP and compete for the 2020 presidential nomination of the Libertarian Party (a prospect even his potential competitors in the L.P. are cheering on).
