Ben Carson's 'Oreo' Gaffe Highlights Acronym Madness at Federal Agencies
Plus: New York may ban 3D-printed guns and most Americans support Roe v. Wade.

"No, not an Oreo. An R-E-O. R-E-O." That's U.S. Rep. Katie Porter (D–Calif.) speaking at a Capitol Hill hearing on housing yesterday. For those unfamiliar with federalese, REO stands for "real estate owned." It's a term that refers to foreclosed upon houses now owned by the federal department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It's also a term with which HUD Secretary Ben Carson is apparently unfamiliar.
Asked by Porter about such homes—"do you know what an REO is?"—Carson replied, "An Oreo?"
It was not his only stumble yesterday, with Carson appearing alternately clueless and contentious throughout the hearing. Afterward, he attempted to make light of the Oreo/REO mistake:
OH, REO! Thanks, @RepKatiePorter. Enjoying a few post-hearing snacks. Sending some your way! pic.twitter.com/q4MMTBWVUI
— Archive: Ben Carson (@SecretaryCarson) May 21, 2019
But perhaps the gaffe doesn't speak as ill of the doc-turned-housing-policy-head as it may seem. "In Carson's defense the acronym soup of federal housing policy is indefensible and I don't use any of it in my writing it [sic] I can help it," tweeted Atlantic CityLab reporter Kriston Capps.
An REO means a foreclosed home repossessed by the bank. Just say that, it's clear and accessible to anyone reading.

Capps notes that there are 428 official departmental acronyms within HUD.

Roe v. Wade is just fine with a majority of Americans, according to a new poll from CBS News. In the survey, 67 percent of respondents said they did not want to see the landmark abortion case overturned. In addition, 48 percent said they would be angry if Roe is overturned, while 26 percent said they would be happy about it and 23 percent said it didn't really matter that much.

New York may ban 3D-printed guns. A measure to this effect "passed the Senate earlier this month and breezed through the Democratic-led Assembly on Monday," reports USA Today. The bill would make it illegal to manufacture, sell, transport, or possess any "undetectable firearm."

That Ransom Eli Olds feeling?
Follow up question, Mr. Carson. How do you feel about Aleppo?
I should also mention that with comments like this, Fist, I'm gonna Keep on Loving You.
If you love Fist you're just Fooling Yourself.
these are terrible. time for me to fly.
I'm ridin the storm out on this one.
Where can I get tickets to see OREO Speedwagon?
Ben Carson is a brain surgeon. The media people who are criticizing him couldn't pass a high school science class without mommy and daddy paying someone to tutor them and threatening to sue the school if their snowflake didn't get an A. Sorry but people as dumb as the media have no right to criticize actual smart people.
Nobody is allowed to have a brain fart in the age of Twitter.
So we are not allowed to make fun of smart people when they fuck up? Oh, it's because he is a Republican.
Government workers are better than you.
No, it's because he is black. Did you leave your intersectionality chart at the meeting for the International Workingmen’s Association?
Carson is the wrong kind, the worst kind, of Black. He is conservative who went off the plantation a long time ago. The fact that he succeeded at a high level profession just makes it worse. The "Oreo" gaff is just too much for the MSM to pass up without making out of it what they can. "Hey, Carson doesn't even know REO from OREO! Can you believe it?! They're all so STOOPID!"
That is the sort of bullshit that pisses some people off, because it is every fucking day type of bullshit from the American Pravda machine.
+100
You can't actually blame Carson for this one since he is so accustomed to being called an Oreo.
You axed your question incorrectly.
"Black people must act like cliches"
Fuck that's racist Buttplug.
You, no you are not. That is a privilege that only goes with smart people. Sorry Forrest.
So we are only allowed to make fun of smart people when they fuck up if they are Republican.
FTFY, prog
Na, I'm going to make fun of politicians whenever I want. Also, I applaud Ben Carson for laughing at himself and being a good sport.
Blowing out someone else's candle won't make yours shine brighter.
Are we allowed to laugh here or is that not okay? I didn't realize that libertarians were so up tight.
John and Ken Shultz don’t understand humor and are incapable of laughing. Most everyone else can laugh.
That's good to know. I know hostility is guaranteed on any political forum, but wow we have some very rigid no-fun types around here. Libertarians always seemed a little more relaxed to me.
It's not that some libertarians are rigid and uptight, it's that some of them are very devout members of the Cult of the Conman and their God will not be mocked nor shall any of their God's apostles. You dare utter a disparaging word about Tr-mp, you'll find yourself wished into the cornfield for your wrongthink.
Trimp?

In defense of John, he can take a joke and is willing to poke fun at himself from time to time. Ken, not so much.

Haha, calm down man, relax. No one is attacking you.
An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.

This is the best joke in the thread.
Ben Carson is a brain surgeon.
Which is obviously what makes him eminently capable of running HUD. Just because he’s smart at one thing doesn’t mean he’s smart at everything.
It's HUD. It's not rocket science.
Its HUD. Its definitely not like the field of medicine.
Efficiently running anything that big and complex is probably impossible no matter who you are. The same goes for other cabinet level departments. The Secretaries are just holding on for dear life, trying to make slight adjustments to the course of their high-momentum bureaucracies, and rarely succeeding.
I don't think anyone at HUD wants it to be run efficiently. They would see that as a downside. Kinda like DCF.
Dr. Ben probably just didn't get the memo about the TPS report cover sheets.
People can be very smart in some areas and pretty dumb in others.
I'm not saying Carson is stupid in any way. I don't know enough about him. But his brilliance as a neurosurgeon doesn't necessarily extend to other areas.
But it doesn't really matter who is the head of HUD anyway.
The dark side of ‘socialism’
For example, socialists celebrate equality yet distance themselves from the army of bureaucrats and secret police required to enforce it. So-called libertarian communists are effectively longing for a dish of fried snowballs. And democratic socialism – “the democratisation of every aspect of society”, as prominent Left-wing columnist Owen Jones has defined it – would in practice be ruled by fanatics with too much time on their hands; typically the over-zealous and the under-sexed.
...Later on, the pilgrims will pronounce that it does not matter because the experiment was ‘not real socialism’. And they will get away with it. “After Venezuela fell off a cliff,” Niemietz writes, “some of Britain’s most eager Chavistas went on to become some of the most senior political figures in the country”.
“One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words ‘Socialism’ and ‘Communism’ draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, ‘Nature Cure’ quack, pacifist, and feminist in England.”
― George Orwell, The Road to Wigan Pier

New York may ban 3D-printed guns.
The Framers said nothing about any well-regulated third dimension militias.
Duh, it says "well-regulated." Therefore, gun control regulation is constitutional.
I am surprised the left has not made this argument.
Also, as OBL would say Hihn would say, it would be ok if you 3D printed muskets because that's what the founders had in mind.
worked for destroying the commerce clause and flipping around why not.
"Duh, it says “well-regulated.” Therefore, gun control regulation is constitutional.
I am surprised the left has not made this argument."
Goddamn, eunuch, you're such a little bitch.
Your hoped-for friends make this argument all the time.
They have made that argument. The problem is that 2A says the militia should be "well regulated", it does not say that arms and/or the right to bear arms should be "well regulated".
They could simply make the argument that we are all part of a militia to fight climate change and that we therefore can be regulated not to own firearms
13th amendment says hi.
Everyone in Illinois is a member of a militia.
SECTION 1. MEMBERSHIP The State militia consists of all able-bodied persons residing in the State except those exempted by law. (Source: Illinois Constitution.)
Of course "except those exempted by law" can mean whatever the progs want it to mean.

I do declare... LEGALLY.
Foghorn Leghorn supports this message.
Ben Carson is another incompetent GOP lackey appointed by the Con Man as a political favor - very swamplike in fact.
Yeah, the typical Democrat politician would be much more highly qualified to be HUD secretary. It's not like it's rocket science. Or brain surgery.
I got to say though not much change has happened in HUD with him in charge. Was hoping for more of a Betsy Devos shake up of that dept. Still could happen but I am not impressed with him. But in fairness I don't know what he can do without Congress. He certainly can't get rid of Davis Bacon but I would think he could do something about some of the higher prevailing wage determinations out there. Like a plumber in DC gets $43 an hour plus $18 fringe. Its one of the big reasons "avoidable housing" is so expensive to build.
Right - what can Carson do with HUD? I think his focus on the regulatory costs of housing is right and should have been reported by Brown here. Carson stated 25-27% of the cost of single family homes is for regulatory compliance, while it's 32-42% for multi-family construction. [see the video at the 3 minute mark].
It's fair game to make fun of government official gaffs (and anyone could get REO, a lousy acronym which should be HO for HUD Owned or Lender Owned, mixed up with Oreo when they say it). But Reason should be looking at this from the libertarian point of view. And it seems to me people would be screaming if they knew how much the cost of their housing is a result of employing bureaucrats and satisfying them, not materials, land or labor. Property taxes are puny in comparison.
Yes, highly regarded pediatric neurosurgeon is really just an idiot, per super tolerant leftie.
I bet your competency in any field dwarfs his, right?
Progs never hold themselves to the same standards, perhaps because they have little to show for actual achievement - unless you count the entertainment industry...
Shreek is a better kiddie porn poster, no doubt.
Ben Carson tried to remove your brain, but all he found was an empty hole in your skull.
San Francisco, home of unregulated capitalism (also, America's heart?):
How San Francisco broke America’s heart
“This is unregulated capitalism, unbridled capitalism, capitalism run amok. There are no guardrails,” says Salesforce founder and chairman Marc Benioff, a fourth-generation San Franciscan who in a TV interview branded his city “a train wreck.”
“I can’t tell you the number of friends who tell me how much they hate San Francisco,” says former city supervisor Jane Kim. Which is something given that she ran for mayor in the 2018 special election. (Kim came in third.) “They say it’s too homogenous.”
Too homogeneous. Too expensive. Too tech. Too millennial. Too white. Too elite. Too bro.
TRASH CITY: ‘Sky-High’ Trash Piles Found In Los Angeles, Raising Concerns About Typhus
Oldie but goodie:
San Francisco’s Human Poop Map Shows City Is In Deep Doo-Doo
Most recently, San Francisco has joined Los Angeles and San Diego as three of the major cities that have caused Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency due to a Hepatitis A epidemic currently brewing in each location.
That's rich coming from a billionaire atop his tower. wtf
There are no regulations in San Fran? So I can just build whatever I want wherever I want? I can sell any good or service I want without a license and pay my workers whatever I want? Taxes are practically non-existent, too, I'm sure.
Only a liberal billionaire who donates a lot of money to almost only Democrat politicians would call anything to do with San Francisco politics "unbridled capitalism". Buying off politicians to them, is capitalism. And disparaging capitalism encourages more political control of commerce.
I'm curious as to whether Benioff actually believes what he says, or he knows it's corrupt and is pushing for it to further fatten his wallet. My guess is option 2, but option 1 is just as bad for the rest of us.
Impeachable conduct is whatever the House of Representatives decides it is...
One of the few bodies in government with less support from the voting public than has the president.
You may as well say indictable conduct is whatever a grand jury says it is.
At least if you're going the legal-positivism route, say "the Senate" rather than the House, because the Senate is the body with the power to judge impeachment cases.
The house impeaches.
The senate tries the case. They don’t impeach.
How About Some “Adversity Points” For Hardworking Kids Of Hardworking Parents?
The latest tactic for the elite to shaft Normal Americans is the obnoxious “adversity score” that the academifascists who run the SATs plan to introduce as a way to give a fig leaf of objectivity and fairness to their screwing over of your kids in favor of the kids of people they prefer. Do you think there is any chance, and chance at all, that these secret numbers based upon secret factors and kept secret from you will make it more likely for your children to get into one of the elite schools?
Yeah, right.
If only someone had predicted this kind of social credit nightmare…
Now, we know for damn certain that the rock-bottom “adversity scores” of the pampered brats of the elite in politics, Hollywood, the media and the corporate boardrooms won’t hold them back. The elite’s gonna elite. We saw a few particularly dumb rich people get swooped up by the FBI, but for every past-prime starlet about to method act the role of a convict at a minimum security women’s prison, you know there are a hundred smarter, subtler wealthy cheats whose useless Ashleighs and Kadens are currently wandering the halls of Harvard, Yale and the other Skeevy League campuses, literally shaking because someone expressed a dissenting opinion.
In addition, 48 percent said they would be angry if Roe is overturned, while 26 percent said they would be happy about it and 23 percent said it didn't really matter that much.
Can we please agree to cancel that 23%.
Why bother?
I never get to cancel anyone.
Asked by Porter about such homes—"do you know what an REO is?"
The doctor missed a classic opportunity to turn an attempt at a gotcha moment into an accusation of racism.
That was my first thought too... WHAT did you just call me?!

You can have fun with some people.

I was asked in an interview for a COBOL programming position if I knew RPG. As I had already decided I didn't want to work at the place, I replied, "Yes, but what has a rocket propelled grenade got to do with this job?"
Silly ass acronyms are the worst idea in government.
When a recipe calls for AP flour, I always wonder if non-armor piercing flour would work as well.
Yeah, the REO acronym "Real Estate Owned" is nonsensical because real estate owns nothing.
Better in this case: LO HO, Lender Owned HUD Owned.
Seems Reason would do better asking why the government owns homes, and shouldn't the government get out of that business (along with getting out of home loans as well).
Domestic Right Wing Terrorism Watch:
Today, domestic extremist violence outpaces Islamist extremism, and the character of the threat has changed dramatically in the last three years. Right-wing extremists and international jihadists from the last decade have many parallels and some differences. Al Qaeda networked its supporters on websites, YouTube, and in web forums. The Islamic State followed suit on Facebook and Twitter before being kicked off those platforms, and then descended on the lesser-policed app Telegram. Today, white supremacists—having been largely pushed off mainstream social media platforms—use obscure sites like Gab and 8Chan to network, radicalize, share philosophies, and celebrate attacks. At the group’s height, the Islamic State’s social media posts traveled widely and were empowered by global legions of supporters who further distributed the group’s message. Today, white supremacists have grown so highly networked online that the Facebook Live video posted by New Zealand mosque shooter Brenton Harrison Tarrant was removed 1.2 million times at upload, and then another 300,000 copies were removed after posting. The Islamic State never achieved such an intense and capable network of online support.

Unlike progressives, who get to use death threats openly on twitter
FPRI gets its list of "white supremacist" groups from the SPLC, a now discredited Democratic Super-PAC masquerading as a human rights organization.
Buttplug's whole article can be effectively ignored as demagogic trash.
The number of terrorist attacks by country shows the devastating effect the activities of ISIS had on Iraq in 2015, with over 2,400 attacks occurring in the country.
What were you lying about again?
Go throw yourself in a running woodchipper feet first. You'd improve the world more as mulch than as a human.
You must be a Nazi Skinhead.
No he just hates child-pornographers like you.
The worst thing any of us could do to these trolls [Butt Head, Rev, sometimes Tony, and what ever happened to Hihn] would be to ignore them. I too yield all too often to the temptation of trolls, to call them vile names and tell them their posts are trash, but then that is what they are here for. Like parasites they feed on getting people upset, and consider this site to be a good feeding ground for their noxious deflections.
I would swear I was warning about this just the other day. "Domestic Terrorist" is going to be the new term for "anybody we don't like".
There will be many more no-knock SWAT raids and arbitrary citizen killings, sooner rather than later.
RE: Roe v Wade being OK in the minds of people.
Sure... and in the minds of people, it's OK to have a drug war because "drugs are bad, m'kay." People are idiots. Damn near all of them. If you attempted to get any of these average people to nail down WHY Roe is fine, you'd get a garbled mess of emotional soup, not actual ethics, philosophy, or rationalization.
So?
So. It means that these surveys are skewed lies to further a Narrative.
Just like Madame President Hillary Clinton said the other day.
As usual, your comment addresses neither the original assertion or the question asked.
So, what you're saying is that the people are suffering from false consciousness and need wise leaders to set them straight.
What could possibly go wrong?
Poor Harry Blackmun. Every day in hell must be worse than the last as more and more kids die because of him.
61 million dead since 1970 have him beating out Hitler and Stalin together.
"Roe v. Wade is just fine with a majority of Americans"
It's actually better than "fine." Roe v. Wade is the most brilliantly reasoned Supreme Court decision in at least a half century. As soon as it was handed down, law professors across the country unanimously hailed its rigorous, ironclad logical foundation. And over time, the decision has attained the status of SUPER-PRECEDENT.
In other words, Roe is the precise opposite of an indefensible ruling like Heller. That was the raw exercise in right-wing judicial activism in which a highly ideological Court invented a "right to bear arms" out of thin air. Like all serious libertarians, I vote Democrat because I want RBG-style justices who realize abortion access is a Constitutional right, and gun ownership is not.
#SaveRoe
#OverturnHeller
#LibertariansForRBG
Super precedent!
It's an academic term.
I know that OBL is a parody, but to set the record straight, Roe was not in any way hailed unanimously, or even substantially, as ironclad, rigorous legal analysis. It was roundly criticized as incoherent and not having a sound doctrinal basis. It was a 7-2 decision on outcome but there were multiple inconsistent opinions both in favor and in dissent. In my Con Law class in 1981-82 we spent two weeks trying to discern what the legal holding (as opposed to the specific outcome) of Roe actually was.
We also forget that feminists were angry at the Roe decision because it allowed restrictions on abortion in the third trimester. As one pro-choice law school classmate of mine put it, the feminists viewed any opinion that did not allow abortion up to five months after birth as an outrage. It was only after the feminists realized that opposition to abortion was not going away that they chose to accept Roe and deem it to be “super-duper deluxe premium precedent a la mode.”
In contrast, Buck v. Bell - the decision that held that the government has the inherent power to rip out a woman’s Fallopian tubes if the government deems the woman to be unfit to reproduce - was a 8-1 decision with a single, clearly written opinion of unmistakably clear meaning authored by a justice who many (though likely not anyone here, with certain exceptions) think of as the greatest jurist who ever was or ever will be. If Roe is super-precedent, what does that make Buck?
And to be clear, even law professors who agreed with the outcome in Roe were critical of the multiple inconsistent opinions and lack of clear legal analysis.
The whole CBS article is a lie anyway. Go to the bottom of their page, look at their methodology and the questions that they actually asked.
Here is the key question:
Q26. If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade, how would that make you feel?
Happy 12
Satisfied, but not happy 14
Dissatisfied, but not angry 17
Angry 31
Won't matter to you much either way 23
Don't know/No answer 3
The real story here should have been "49% would be happy or don't care if Roe vs Wade gets overturned, 48% would be upset". And that's after a series of extremely leading questions.
More dishonest journalismation, and Reason just ignores it.
How do you report “48% will be upset” when only 31% claim they will be “angry?” Being “dissatisfied but not angry” does not equate to “upset.” The real headline should have been “Nearly 7 Americans in 10 Willing to Live With Overturning of Roe.”
Best post evar! Pitch perfect and spot on.
I often disagree with ENB and I'm not always on board with how she gets to where she's going, but ENB is light years better than Robby.
Robby is like Tony with better grammar. I've often said that if somebody wanted to make progressives look even worse to libertarians, they could hardly come up with something better than Tony. Robby works in that equation from a libertarian perspective, too.
Maybe ENB was on vacation? I hope she wasn't just trying to show us how bad it would be if she weren't here and Robby took her place. The beatings will continue until morale improves? Welcome back, ENB. If the alternative is Robby, please never leave again. We appreciate you. Thank you for this lovely post.
Right now, I'm making heart-hands.
Me-ow.
It’s been like that ever since Robby had sex with Ken’s mom.
In his defense if I found a few strands of those glorious blonde locks on mother's pillow I wouldn't be happy either.
Isn't your mom dead?
I thought your mom was dead.
Yes she is, a couple months now. What does that have to do with Robby screwing your mom?
By way of comparison, I'm waaaaaaaaaaay up on you!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4G40jNZABI
You were the one going around talking about you didn't give a shit about somebody's Mom getting beat up by the police, weren't you?
You're really into talking about people's moms!
Karma?
Suicidal Tendencies, nice!
Are you saying that me not caring about the fate of other people’s mothers is why my mother died? That’s pretty weird, even for you.
You're being unfair to Robby, I think. This has been a banner year for him. He's made a few mis-steps with his needlessly qualified statements, but he's had some superb articles as well. He's even taken the gloves off at times to really smack people over the head with objectivity.
Yeah, I don't know what Ken's problem is. Robby has been doing some good work lately, I think.
With any luck, that job at the huffpo will take him away from all this--or, maybe even the wapo!
Good
riddanceluck, Robby!A Sociologist of Religion on Protestants, Porn, and the “Purity Industrial Complex”
In terms of the cultural consequences, an entire subculture has built up around preventing young men and women from accessing pornography. There are a large portion of what we would consider men’s Bible studies or men’s groups, where they get together and they talk in gender-specific terms about the things that they deal with as men. A lot of that is dedicated toward, “Hey, did you look at pornography this week?” Or, “Did you masturbate this week?” There is, in fact, a cottage industry of software companies selling and marketing what we would call accountability software to conservative Christians. If the software detects that you searched for something shady online, it will send an e-mail to your “accountability partners,” and you’re basically tagging your friends, who will get an e-mail that says, “Hey, Sam or Isaac looked at whatever pornographic Web site.” So they could circle back with you and ask you about it. And that is something that people are paying money to put on their computers, to try to prevent themselves from viewing pornography. I call it the Purity Industrial Complex, of books and small groups and materials, and even software companies, who are basically rising to the challenge of trying to prevent Christians from looking at pornography.
Arkansas woman convicted of killing husband for his refusal to quit porn
Everyone knows sex is the worst thing ever. Notice it’s totally ok to look at violent movies.
Sex was liberating and great in the 60's and 70's, scary and confusing in the 90's, and now it's just plain bad and only deplorables like sex
The change seems to coincide with Crysty's coming of age. Can you really blame society for that type of reaction?
Some men do have porn addiction issues - I think Terry Crews has talked very openly about his addiction and how hard it is to combat it. Glad to see the market has come up with creative solutions to help people that want to watch less porn if they feel like its getting in the way of their faith, harming their relationships, screwing up their sex life or lessening their self-esteem.
This seems reasonable.
Some of us actually believe God when he says sex is for a certain kind of relationship only.
We also report having better sex than anyone else, so maybe God knew what he was talking about?
But, none of this is an initiation of force, so why do you care? Can't handle a different way of life than yours?
I'm not for banning it, but porn doesn't make you a better person Johnny.
In fact, too much of it can make you jaded and can get you looking for greater stimulation in places you really shouldn't go. Just ask Buttplug.
Just like anything else, personal sexual moderation is key. If you need friends to help you attain your goals I don't see any problems. This is just the sex version of Weight Watchers.
Speaking of Trump incompetence, why didn't the GOP finally "fix" Fannie/Freddie after bitching about them for 8 years since the Financial Collapse?
Don't bother. I know the answer.
Because it’s running a profit now?
Because they love big government as much as their colleagues 'across the aisle'
Because Democrats in Congress wont let Republicans cut them from the budget.
The GOP needs a 60 Senator majority to pass a budget. They currently cannot do it without Democrats.

Oh this is about actual rats? I just assumed it was about politicians and bureaucrats.
We should stop this rat now.

Socialism is a cover for failure. We can't be bothered with something as insignificant as our job of keeping the rats down, we have a society to totally reengineer.
Real Americans would stop the rats!
This is obviously due to global warming. I 'm surprised the article didn't say that.

Triggering the libs while knowing you will trigger the libs without trying to trigger the libs is the best way to trigger the libs.
Like several editors of this alt-right magazine website.
Except you can't say 'trigger' because it is a gun part and therefore inherently evil and violent.
Say "triggah". That's different.
Triggah, please!

"67 percent of respondents said they did not want to see the landmark abortion case overturned. In addition, 48 percent said they would be angry if Roe is overturned"
Assuming all these people understand that abortion will still be legal in states where it's popular if and when Roe is overturned is obviously off. It would be interesting to hear why the 48 percent would be angry. Is it because you want access to abortion for yourself, or is it all about inflicting you opinion on the people of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Kentucky?
I'd be interested in a survey to look at that, and I'd like it to apply to gun control, as well. How many pro-abortion people, who don't think elective abortion access should be legal or illegal by state, also think that their local state should be free to ban assault weapons or pistols that can hold more than eight rounds?
Are any of these 48% principled on the issue of federalism, or is it all about inflicting their own opinions on people elsewhere? How do they stack up against supporters of gun rights? Enquiring minds want to know.
Here's an analysis of support for abortion by state according to Pew:
https://www.pewforum.org/religious-landscape-study/compare/views-about-abortion/by/state/
From my read, the following states would probably ban abortion if Roe were overturned:
Alabama
Arkansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Mississippi
South Carolina
West Virginia
Those states have a combined population of about 30 million people.
There are 325 million in the United States.
By my read, more than 90% of the American people would probably not be affected by the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
If abortion were no longer an issue, what would happen to the votes of cultural conservatives? If cultural conservatives no longer had the abortion issue to coalesce around, I suspect they would be even less of a force--in national politics. What if overturning Roe v. Wade and defending it were no longer a fig leaf for both progressives and cultural conservatives?
People imagine that if Roe v. Wade were overturned that it would threaten abortion rights everywhere, but what happens when people realize that it's mostly just about a few places in Appalachia and the deep south? At that point, do whatever they're calling soccer moms these days start voting on issues like spending and taxes?
It's really not that hard to get to Tennessee from Kentucky, or to Ohio from West Virginia. State level abortion bans would be largely virtue signalling by fundies and not really accomplish much.
All these people wringing their hands about the coming Handmaid's Tale world should be reminded that up until just a couple years ago, abortion was illegal in Ireland! And those people are stuck on an island! Nobody claimed they were a fundamental theocratic misogynist culture that I remember
Nobody claimed they were a fundamental theocratic misogynist culture that I remember
I have been told by several different people that Ireland is mired in progressive politics. I hear the censorship and outcasting of conservative voices and supporters of traditional values is much worse over there than it is here in the U.S. Supposedly there is very little resistance to the far left in Ireland. And because of that, any and all resistance is very effectively smeared as being extremist "far right".
I don't know if that's true, its just what I've been told by a few people who live there.
I've spoken with a number of stateside IRA members. They're beyond livid about the way Ireland is headed.
I have hope that they'll get up and fight back if it gets too bad. I don't have that hope for us.
Neither side really wants Roe overturned. The conservatives would lose their perpetual rallying cry, while the left would lose the ability to use the “threat” to Roe as a rallying cry. Neither side wants a satisfactory compromise on the issue or abortion because they are too invested in having the issue as a political weapon and a fundraising bonanza.

Back in my day we hit our wives because they burned dinner or wanted to leave the kitchen or had an opinion or smiled at another man, but these millennials are ridiculous.
Time is money , dude.
It's interesting the police allowed a drunken, physically violent politician to stagger back into his house and then calmly followed him. Shouldn't they have gunned him down as soon as he turned around? He could have been "reaching" or something.
To put that "supporting Roe" poll in perspective, a Georgia poll found respondents evenly divided on whether to support a bill more restrictive that Roe allows, but the same respondents supported Roe 3-1.
https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/16/politics/abortion-rights-polling-analysis/index.html
It's as if not all respondents are aware of how extreme Roe actually is, so they support a Roe in their heads which is much less extreme.
I posted this higher, but the CBS Poll methodology and the questions that they actually asked need to be examined by everyone reading the misleading article.
They can be found below the article itself.
Here is the key question:
Q26. If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade, how would that make you feel?
Happy 12
Satisfied, but not happy 14
Dissatisfied, but not angry 17
Angry 31
Won’t matter to you much either way 23
Don’t know/No answer 3
So the story here should have been “49% don’t care or would be would be happy if Roe vs Wade gets overturned, 48% would be upset”.
This is the same as always.

More evidence Tulsi Gabbard is terrible.
Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard characterized a recent critical report about her campaign as "fake news," invoking a defense oft-used by President Trump. The congresswoman did not specify what in the article was "fake."
She's a Russian stooge who attacks the media. Basically a younger, female Drumpf. Don't let her supposed "anti-war" stance fool you; libertarians should support literally any 2020 Democrat over her.
#LibertariansAgainstGabbard
#GabbardRussia
The fake part is where she is fully quoted in context.
Why are you so frightened by Tulsi Gabbard, OBL?
"...libertarians should support literally any 2020 Democrat over her."
Even Swallows-well? De-Blah-Ze-O? I know you literally hate her but seriously?
I keep hearing elsewhere that there's a crisis at the border, one that both parties agree needs addressing. It got so bad that now America's homeless are getting booted out of shelters to make room for illegal immigrants. Is this an acceptable solution in the minds of the reason writers? That we should spend taxpayer dollars housing illegal immigrants over Americans? I'm constantly amazed that a publication that pushes open borders fails to address the taxpayer burden of their desired policies.
I’m constantly amazed that a publication that pushes open borders fails to address the taxpayer burden of their desired policies.
You must be new here.
I've been coming here for over a year, and it still baffles me every time. I'm the asshole because I don't want to fund South America's journey to the US...
And I'll keep coming back because I'm here for the outrage
It got so bad that now America’s homeless are getting booted out of shelters to make room for illegal immigrants.
Wow, that's fucked if true. Mind linking an article where you found this info?
here
Ah, thanks. Now I see why I couldn't find support for your quote above: "It got so bad that now America’s homeless are getting booted out of shelters to make room for illegal immigrants. "
Because that's not whats actually happening according to the article. The issue is really that American citizens that are homeless never got shelter in the first place because some of these shelters were given to mixed-status immigrants (families that have some legal members - like children born here - and some illegal members - probably their parents). Still pretty fucked. I do question the idea of throwing some of these kids out onto the street, but in the end we have to make those tough choices - Its reasonable to expect an American family that has full citizenship status should take precedence over a mixed status family that has an anchor baby here.
It's ugly, its fucked, but people that have been paying taxes here should be the first in line to benefit from the social safety nets we have.
I agree that "booted" is a bit misleading, but many shelters make you come back daily to get access, and if they start accepting illegal immigrants then the american citizens will have less access, or given the boot where they previously had access.
Important news for anyone who cares about preserving access to abortion care!
Judd Legum has compiled a list of corporations that have donated to politicians who are literally turning this country into The Handmaid's Tale:
1. I scoured the campaign finance databases for the six states that have banned abortion this year. I looked for corporate contributions to the politicians leading the charge to pass abortion bans. 6 companies stood out. Let's take them one at a time
You need to read the whole Twitter thread. But the short version is anyone who cares about reproductive rights needs to boycott AT&T, Wal-Mart, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Coca Cola, and Aetna.
I have already thrown out all the Coke products in my fridge. I encourage all libertarians to do the same.
Give it up.
The Aborto-Freaks have won. The womb police state is inevitable. Daughters will need their menses inspected or face arrest for manslaughter.
Long live the Womb Police!
No we know what the bet welchers and people who get banned for all sorts of strange reasons think about aborto-freaks think, which is important to . . . no one.
I'm guessing he feels like he's defying some great enemy in his head, like an angry old man shaking his fists at the sky? . . . after he's failed to pay on a losing bet and been banned for all sorts of strange reasons.
Mr. Buttplug was never banned. He has explained quite convincingly it was simply a matter of a forgotten password.
We left-libertarian Clinton voters cannot quit so easily. Sure, things are awful now. But by 2021 at the latest, we'll have a Democrat back in the White House. Hopefully one who advocates expanding the Supreme Court by at least 2 justices.
Imagine how great it will be when we get 2 more SC members who rule exactly like RBG does, but are only around 50 - 55 years old. Maybe they could even expand Roe so that it fully protects abortion access throughout the third trimester.
#LibertariansForThirdTrimesterAbortion
I loathe Donald Trump, but I'll laugh like a hyena when you and all the other leftist trash are wailing and gnashing your teeth because of his re-election.
OBL is a talented satirist, though I admit it's hard to remember that at times.
AT&T
Man, it would be really hard to boycott AT&T. They have their fingers in so many things at this point. When the whole stupid Gillette commercial controversy was happening and I saw people trying to boycott Gillette, I looked into just how many brands are owned by Procter & Gamble (owners of Gillette).. they make so many every day products that even the boycotters probably don't realize how many products they buy are indirectly related to Gillette through Procter & Gamble.
I really need to start buying these stocks for companies that people try to boycott. They seem to dip down by about 5%, then pop right back up a week later and continue to climb.
I'm still boycotting P&G, but it never ceases to amaze me how many products they own.
It's completely changed my buying patterns.
Now ask those people in the Roe v Wade poll whether they support the actual policies enabled by post Roe jurisprudence without naming where they come from. I expect the result will not be nearly so supportive. I expect these people are responding positively to a phrase they are expected to like but do not entirely understand the implications of.
Roe v. Wade is just fine with a majority of Americans, according to a new poll from CBS News. In the survey, 67 percent of respondents said they did not want to see the landmark abortion case overturned.
The joke's on them. Roe was superseded by Planned Parenthood v. Casey back in 1992.
Ben Carson's 'Oreo' gaffe highlights Carson's incompetence. For a brain surgeon, he is either dumb or doesn't take his job seriously. There is no defense of this staggering level of ignorance.
You too could have been appointed to run a federal agency that you don't even know what it does by endorsing The Dotard.
See also Rick W Perry. others.
Rick Perry was governor of a state for 14 years whose energy sector is larger than every country in Europe. You don't need a technical guy at the top of the organization.
So? He didn't do shit of the TX O&G sector and he famously said he would abolish the Dept of Energy in that idiotic debate performance of his.
Yes, removing bloated federal agencies is super lame.

Funny how the only bad thing Lefties can find on Ben Carson's handling of HUD for the past 2.5 years is something about OREOs.
Parody or are you just a dick?
"Ben Carson’s ‘Oreo’ gaffe highlights"
Oh wow, are we still pretending "gaffes" are a thing?
why did nobody stop HUD Guy Ben Carson from standing for that photo w/a bag of oreos and why is Brain Surgeon Ben Carson not smart enough to not do so on his own?
Or at least explain to him what HUD does.
Because there's nothing wrong with posing for that photo. Some people will use it and poke fun, which is no big deal. Some people will use it to be seriously racist, so why shouldn't we let them out themselves if they see fit to do so?
>>>Because there’s nothing wrong with posing for that photo
not at all, except the unnecessary controversy mho ... if i was on Team Ben i'd want Team Ben to prosper not get twittered and hashtagged over silly photo
Yeah, from a political perspective, its a dumb move, I agree.

The rental car companies have starting using paperless rental agreements that they email to you.
My advice is to get them to print a copy for the vehicle you are renting. Cops likely wont give you time to pull up an email or accept an email even if you have it.
I have been stopped by stupid cops and then harassed for "not having insurance" when my credit card covers rental cars with insurance or I get the rental car company's insurance plan.
Trump has built less than 2 miles of new wall with $1.57 BILLION Congress handed him for this year but insists 'demolition and rebuilding' should count too

Nevada is latest Democrat state to pass bill to give EC votes to presidential national popular vote winner.
Hahaha. Trump will get 538 Electoral Votes after he wins the popular vote too in election 2020. The Lefties will shit themselves. California and New York will scream to change the rules after they lose the popular vote in 2020.
As soon as a republican wins the popular vote but not the electoral college they will change their minds.

There is an argument that this is an illegal extraconstitutional agreement between the states. That the states cannot make side agreements outside federal government procedures in the constitution.

I thought men should have ZERO say in abortion. Given that Roe v Wade was decided exclusively by dudes, shouldn't we overturn it?
In the survey, 67 percent of respondents said they did not want to see the landmark abortion case overturned. In addition, 48 percent said they would be angry if Roe is overturned, while 26 percent said they would be happy about it and 23 percent said it didn't really matter that much.
I've read that three times, and I still can't figure out where the 67% comes from.
It's fake news. Only a Minority Strongly Oppose Overturning Roe would more accurately describe the polling results.
I’ve read that three times, and I still can’t figure out where the 67% comes from.
The '48% would be angry' quip is a pretty wanton misinterpretation as well.
Stinks like fake news.
In addition, 48 percent said they would be angry if Roe is overturned, while 26 percent said they would be happy about it and 23 percent said it didn't really matter that much.
The other 3 percent said “Roe versus Wade? Depends on what I’m fishin for.”

Mississippi's six-week abortion ban will be weighed by the same judge who, six months ago, struck down the state's attempt at banning abortion after 15 weeks pregnancy.
The District Court judge's view is irrelevant. The idea is to get to the SCOTUS.
When you have an advantage, press it.
President Trump on Wednesday ripped House Democrats for continuing investigations into his administration and shot back at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who claimed that he is “engaged in a cover-up.”
”I don’t do cover-ups,” Trump declared during a hastily arranged news conference in the Rose Garden.
"The crime was on the other side,” he continued. “To my way of thinking – and a lot of you agree with me – the crime was committed on the other side. This whole thing was a take down attempt at the president of the United States.”
He called special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election a “hoax.”

Ah, Reason, don't ever quit. By your own poll, 67% say they didn't want to see the case overturned but less than 48% would be 'unsatisfied' if it were and less than 37% would be 'angry'. According to other similar polls a larger plurality >68% are in favor of curtailing the 'right to abortion' masquerading as a right to privacy enshrined in RvW.
An older 2018 (I think) poll showed that a slim majority, like 51% of Americans opposed abortion after a fetal heartbeat was detected until you informed them that that could be as little as 6 weeks and then support (only) dropped to 37%.
Ultimately, the polling shows that uninformed and easily manipulated mobs of people are uninformed and easily manipulated and if there's lots of support for not overturning RvW, there's equally sizable support for largely curtailing it.
48 percent said they would be angry if Roe is overturned
I mean c'mon! It literally says:
"48% would be between dissatisfied and angry." Is it really that hard to be factually correct according to your own sources? Does every payoff, however small, always justify the sacrifice to your professional integrity?
